Latest news about the deadly volcano on whites island off the coast of New Zealand also 7 years on how one grieving father is dealing with the anniversary of the Sandy Hook primary school gun attack and then Sensi she once the symbol of human rights and a Nobel Peace Prize recipient found his self in the International Court of Justice yesterday defending her country's treatment of its Muslim minority which she acknowledges has been heavy handed more on that later. The number of people known to have died after the eruption of New Zealand's wots Island volcano has risen to 82 people who are being treated in hospital died from their injuries and 9 people are still officially missing presumed dead efforts to retrieve bodies from the island were put on hold on Wednesday amid signs of increased seismic activity another 20 people are in intensive care with severe burns at a news conference in Melbourne the Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison gave this update we will have within the next 24 hours and we want to Stratton who were mine hospitalized in New Zealand we have already completed 5 medical evacuations to hospitals in a strident there will be another 7 evacuations of a stright inspect to strike in hospitals I with the course of the next 24 hours Sadly there are 10 further Stratton's. Who are missing and presumed deceased upon odds film has been following the story as a story which has got an international dimension as an info. Well we knew it would don't but this is a story that just keeps getting worse we now know that 8 people have died so far following the eruption on white Highland in New Zealand they have plenty on Monday as you say another 20 people are in intensive care with very severe burns and New Zealand Police tell us that some of those patients are so badly injured they cannot identify themselves the majority of those patients are being assisted with their breathing some very serious internal burns to their skin but also burns to the insides of their body and we understand to Dothan that $1200000.00 square centimeters of replacement skin is needed that is a huge amount of replacement skin to come from donors don't a spin comes from dead donors Australia the United States say that they will help New Zealand with those supplies but that figure $1200000.00 square centimeters of replacement skin just gives you an indication as to how badly burnt some of those survivors are several believe will still unaccounted for but presumed dead are the authorities. To get to b.r.l. And currently. We've heard in the last few minutes that police in New Zealand are apparently finalizing plans to retrieve the bodies all of some of those missing on Friday now they haven't been able to send 2 Recovery teams in because it's simply too dangerous there has been an increase as you say in volcanic activity on White Island in the last couple of days the alert level remains that basically there is a sliding scale from 0 to 55 is the most extreme on this particular volcanic scale so at the moment it remains it too but experts do say that the threat all of an even bigger eruption in the next 24 hours is quite high the police say that they hope to send that team in interstate retrieving the bodies on Friday morning local time but if you listen to that scientific scientific advice we're not quite sure if it's going ahead so all the way through after this disaster the police is saying yes they want to get in and retrieve those bodies it is extremely important for every one of concerned of course but if it's too dangerous for those recovery teams then they'll have to stay put until it's deemed to be safe but at the moment the police say that they are crafting a plan to go in on Friday as well as all of this is under the New Zealand jurisdiction is not. It is it's down to the police and also to the scientists as Wells what we're hearing is that the people the families the relatives of course everybody wants to know exactly who's involved in how many we don't really know the ultimate scale of this tragedy who's involved until all the bodies can be recovered then of course there's the issue of identifying those remains we understand that Australia is sending identification experts to New Zealand to help with that gruesome task we know about 47 people were on the island at the time of the eruption many were taken back to the mainland but they are suffering those very serious burns as we say not just external burns the skin of course is the biggest organ we have and if that is damaged that opens the way for infection hence the need for emergency treatment hence the need for all of that replacement skin and also the reason why many of those Australian victims have been airlifted to hospitals here in Sydney for treatment to relieve pressure on New Zealand's health system given the as we say the scale of this disaster just keeps getting worse with any survivors who've been able to talk about what happened at the point at the time of the eruption. But publicly we understand that there were reports that one or 2 people have been discharged of course they were among the very lucky ones who would have been able to literally walk away from this with just minor injuries you'd have to say that 2 young Australians have been identified in the media he is the latest victims they are brothers Matthew and Berendt Holland Now again this is a storage is that just keeps getting worse Matthew was just seen his brother Barents was 16 and we understand that their parents are missing too so these are 2 school boys from Sydney on a family holiday like many others and they haven't returned so the school here in Sydney where they were attending has been expressing its shock and grief in the Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison says more Australians missing presumed dead and he said in that press conference in Melbourne that in the days ahead there will be worse news for families here in Australia this does have of course an international dimension we know that tourists from Britain China Malaysia the United States Australia and of course New Zealand were caught up in this because of the sensitivity of the injury is the need for privacy and also we just don't know specifically how many bodies are still on the island we have a very good idea but we don't know for sure so finding out exactly the truth scale of this disaster is taking time and there are frustrations among family members wanting to know about their relatives and that's of course natural but the police have always said that they can't send recovery teams into harm's way and you can understand why you don't want. More grief to a traumatic situation you know sure because there is too fear is it not that there might be a similar eruption again over the next few days. You simply can't predict these folk chemical eruptions New Zealand sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire which is an extremely volatile Holzschuh shape around the Pacific Ocean and New Zealand has active volcanoes we know don't you and I have spoken about earthquakes in New Zealand and they just simply can't be predicted a few weeks ago about 3 and a half weeks ago the alert level on White Island was raised from one to 2 in that sliding scale we were discussing at the time well far it is said that there was no direct threat to visitors and that's why presumably holiday make has was still allowed to this active volcano sites now we just don't know if it's likely to blow now tomorrow next week or next year so that is the problem facing the police they don't want to send that recovery team into harm's way to retrieve bodies although that retrieval is very very important and each day that goes by in New Zealand or far exceeds of acknowledge this that each day that goes by that those bodies remain on the island it adds to the grief and misery of family members waiting for news it's a very delicate balance between retrieving the bodies and making sure that those people who have to do that grim and dangerous work as safe. Phil thank you for most of the the de facto leader of men and Sensi She has defended her country against charges of genocide against Ranger Muslims at the International Court of Justice she called the case against me incomplete and incorrect thousands of Ranger were killed and more than 700000 fled after an army crackdown in the mainly Buddhas country in 2017 speaking of the Hague says she blamed what happened on militants who are seeking independence from laws and 30 police stations and villages and one minute Creek base had been attacked before sunrise in a highly coordinated fashion many of the ourself fighters had been recruited from local villages in the weeks and months of the seating the attack your mosque defense services sponsored to the attacks of us a fight is by the use of ground forces where money is a journalist based in the Netherlands and was in court where the atmosphere there was like the International Court of Justice I don't think is known for having a an exciting atmosphere is a pretty stoic place. Outside it was kind of interesting there was a lot of sort of pro Oh you know anti anxiety sort of protestors whatever you call them kind of there outside they they had to be separated by the police for the 2nd day in a row but inside the court Yeah I mean that's it was it was pretty quiet she was pretty stoic I mean she was pretty yeah sort of a motion rest I think is what what a lot of people sort of describe her as an elder that's. I think that was that was pretty much what kind of what people what people expect. As president some ways she was like a star witness wasn't she how did she perform in defense of her country yet well I mean you know this case had attracted a lot of media attention before but I think once it was known that she was coming to be the agent for me and Maher of course a bit of a media circus and people are very. I didn't see her there yeah I mean I'm not you know I'm not a lawyer but I think she performed quite well she sort of seemed to have a pretty well prepared script she's a good speaker she she seemed to speak strongly and confidently kind of believe in the things that that she was saying today which is that Myanmar is not committing genocide against the Rohingya but she seemed to sense that the imagery fools who had maybe more forcefully than they needed yet so she did it sort of admit the defense forces may have acted with recklessness I believe is the word that she used but what she said is that you know Myanmar has a system of justice that people who acted you know beyond the realm of acceptability can be prosecuted within the n.r.c. Justice system and that they don't need involvement from the International Court of Justice to hold those people accountable Was it a reaction in the codes to. Defense against the charges of genocide Yeah and not I mean not really in the court you know like the court is just sort of security is very tight the court is very full I mean every every seat was sort of full but there wasn't much yet in terms of reaction in a court I think that kind of human rights advocates and these sorts of things were kind of expressing sort of online or a lot of press releases and a lot of interviews that I did afterwards sort of yeah kind of. Expressing a bit of disbelief that people are going to deny that what is happening to the Rohingya is a genocide and there was this 272017 u.n. Report. Saying that the state was acting with genocidal intent so while it wasn't surprising obviously she's there to defend me and Mar I think people had a you had bit of a frustrated reaction that someone with her standing was going to continue to kind of stand up for these actions which the rest of the world seems to see as as acceptable is she cuts off do you think from a demeanor from the way the rest of the well does be reacting is she somehow. Princess seed from that was she went to where that. Standing the 70 to be impression people have a verb has changed since she was a Nobel Peace Prize laureate. Yeah I think that's that was a that was a big help of discussions that I mean obviously you never know what someone's personal situation is it's difficult even to countries with you know much more free and open you know press and politicians to kind of understand what politicians are thinking sometimes but I mean you know she just has to pick up a phone and look at the b.b.c. Or look at the Guardian or any other newspaper that's sort of covering this to see how bad the you know the atrocities have been or it's been widely covered in the media so yeah I mean I My personal suspicion is is that you know she's kind of maybe surrounded by people who are telling her that these kinds of things these reports are false I mean one of their lawyers did call into question today the u.n. Report and its findings back on English and that was there and try 16. So yeah I mean I suspect maybe she just yeah doesn't want to know or isn't kind of willing to admit to herself what is happening I know I'm asking you to speculate but nevertheless you. Saw the performance of an sense is she at close quarters and I wonder you know the other question mark has always been is she the person who pulls the strings in Manama and the idea the very idea that somebody of her standing should come a peace icon and she is ours she was at least should come to genocide trial to defend. The accused does it does seem as if it is somewhat strange isn't it I wonder whether you could get a sense of whether she was there voluntarily or not. Yeah I mean if Yeah that's also a good that's also an excellent question mean obviously the political situation situation in Myanmar is very complicated you know this this military junta was in power for a long time she seems to have some control but I will say that you know it is not it is not a thing that typically happens at the International Court of Justice and I cover it quite frequently that a head of state appears on behalf of a country I mean Gambia is there with their defense minister that's their minister of justice that's much more common to have an attorney general or an ambassador appear as the agent the fact that she is there at all I think shows that she wants to. Drum up support at least in her home country for this thing that they are kind of perceiving as an international community international community to kind of prosecuting for what they are arguing is an internal conflict that the international community has had any involvement and so. If I would think that if she didn't want to be here they could have sent somebody else I mean it's much more common to send to send someone out so you know I think it shows that she you know believes strongly that her country isn't doing anything wrong to win situation in Myanmar for the ranges. Well there are according to you know sort of that the u.n. Reports that have come out of baggers about 700000 displaced or are there mostly over the border from e.m.r. In Bangladesh and refugee camps actually today's proceedings and yesterday's proceedings are live streamed and they were being high streamed into some of these camps so some of the Rohingya were watching last. There have been a number of of agreements 17 to try to repatriate them back to Myanmar or to move them somewhere else that was a plant sort of moved them to an island in the bios and all that didn't come. As it really seemed to go anywhere any Myanmar doesn't seem keen to take these people back and I think Bangladesh is not a particularly you know socio economically advantaged country and they are you know really struggling to have 700000 people sitting or if you do camps at their borders so you know most of these people are in stay says basically money call the Jonas biased in the Netherlands who was in cold so the International Court of Justice and the McKinley is this instance would send it to the Daily Mirror Tell me what was on the back page the guy Bill does use of course the school hatchery from Manchester City is the one for long. G.'s and the goal eternity to back I had lined in Saudi Double Down was my personal favorite Jesus Christ Superstar city Brazil struck in his quick 5 treble and. I was saying what if you know what a great player you have a lean spell earlier in the season but now I think he still went off I even forgot and you also got also a bit of tribute to Phil Foden who schooled the school to full skull. You always praise the cell phone doesn't he and says What a great player is and then when it comes to a Premier League starting 11 he doesn't seem to name him in the starting 11 but anyway he's singing his praises as well and then joked he could give us 500 go 500 goals for city since Claudio. Has been in charge that was to follow his goal was one of. His goals. And He then joked he could do with the 2nd 500 he says but if I could get them in the next 6 months that would be a big help I'm sure he would say I'm sure we'll just see the scene in Champions league performances in Europe this week knowing data told him also they they were beaten 3 want to buy Munich and to be an old a lot of state ever well beaten senior scored a seraphic goal and there was also I do not bow to pretty insights from the Spurs goalkeeper Pollock as a guy but he wasn't they didn't look great I mean both seems already qualified from group and the done was a grab Zagreb much city guy was also a dead rubber really so not liked me like the excitement. Of the previous night. And rather pedestrian performance rather pedestrian games not realistically hurricane didn't play Fitz on them but certainly man John Cross reports he said Maria Hinojosa Maria cut desperate figure on the touchline as the size of the task in front of him was put into into a stark context he says he's won the Champions League twice straight on this evidence to on top of the long way short of being able to mix again with Europe's elite black that does must have something to do with the fact that nothing really was on this guy wouldn't make any difference the Spurs are won then the tightly table is already been determined and also without Harry kind and human song the same looks very very different is a song for good Mary everybody and that's when he took over the top of that he's never won a Champions League he's never lost a Champions League final. And hung like a friend assessor I think. He's on to something better than a phrase ended up winning so cool usually is the clubs that want the coaches but you'll story in the paper this morning as the coach who wants a club and a head lies God knows I want you a lot see color and you lot see a skating they saw story by John Cross on a return to English football with Arsenal considering him for the Emirates job now sacked by Napoli of course despite league into the Champions League not cast a G's. He is regarded as a sort of safe pair of hands if you like but often all the word is asked looking more towards younger manages with a sort of a new. Perhaps a fresh look and you'll see a safe pair of hands and I'm sure that's one of the things up evidence and. Tales to Everton for because I'm Angela c. Would be a step up from the manages they've had in the past and how being even being associated with the now. He's already been evident I've already been in to try to sound out and Chalabi and the word is the editor actually keener on Chalabi than Arsenal are this point so we don't just see Jews also rabbits in a sense of well apparently what they would like to receive it would like to return the Premier League anyway but he would like to live in London like a lot of foreign managers would he prefers London as he's. Still a full but he's certainly not not ruling anything out by any means. Well they haven't seen of got a manager at the moment haven't you been as you will be but nevertheless the manager the Seems to have some kind of stardust about him very much evident through and through Duncan Ferguson of course we got a story about David Mattingly saying he's he says the feelgood factor is returned to Everton and that's because of one man I mean they were great pictures when they you know hugging ball boys on their way up to a lunch line getting. Fantastic was the I don't like the more tackles in Evanston and I might more tackles in that game than any other game the than in the Premier League for the past 12 years now Duncan Ferguson obviously has something to do with that I'm a very inspirational and passionate thinker all I oversleep is he's well known previously reticent about talking too much indeed for his When I heard talk of Match of the day that was literally the 1st time I did him speak and yeah I was a great fan of him isn't a food but he never used to to me didn't know another soul and the fact. That. The lady the late Jim Rogers. The legendary Scottish football reporter Jim Rogers had a story about Duncan Ferguson I spoke to him on the phone when he's when you're in a bit of a bad sign for Duncan Ferguson when he was g.b. When he was jailed for that head but never when he was trying to get an interview with him before a year before you ended up involved in a gym phoned up and he says Hello I've got a great I'm the only person to have spoken to Duncan Ferguson I said Oh that's fantastic Jim. Only me I said oh well because he had been a go to gym and I said oh really well what did he say Jimmy says no comment that was that was that was a cord from Duncan Ferguson which we go exclusively. I see the man you know it's Dura cue ball pulled a big crowd in the season yeah that play and I said I will know in the Europa League that. It's just a dead rubber that I said that I'm sure they'll be a lot of young players in action have only got a socialist been talking about him says A's one of the best players in the world and still has a big part of playing united despite the rule which has been a substantial revival Qian the last couple of games certainly without him now of course probably tried to engineer a move away in the summer is getting fitter now he's returning it puts soon will return to 1st see much of the. Old Trafford against I said Elma tonight ask him a little bit too soon but social says they need to get fit back in form play some games and he says from Asia on the best place in the world and look forward to having him back out maturely of the Daily Mirror then let's get the latest 5 out of headlines and really leave. Continue in the north throughout the day with in between the. Breaks of rain in the morning with. Beaches. And 3 or 4 degrees. In the rain. A little bit of. 67 degrees. With the Wind strengthening. And the hills temporarily. It's going to feel quite chilly. In the middle. And it will be. Followed through the 2nd part of the. Of the. Example. Temperatures getting much more through. The. Day. Radio. National between England and Pakistan's women. How is quite. Listening to how and when it is weather forecast I think the temperatures of 3 or 4 you're not going to get them hair is baking all the sun shining it's very humid and perfect conditions for cricket reading and going on very nice day one of the left of that innings 314 is the score and it has been brought about by really good partnership for the 5th wicket between not 7 who's on 90 and Fran Wilson who has 78 in one go up in the series 3 matches. And they feel much like December here in Malaysia now I can imagine it's a bit of a new start. It is yeah absolutely because I got a new coach Lisa is that new coach we've just seen a drop on the boundary edge which moves in that 7 to 94 that really should have been taken but she gets a life and she moves ever closer to 100 Lisa Keitany the new England coach is here she's not officially in charge until January but she's sitting just to my left up in the stands watching on issue a very pleased with what she's saying I think because 300 is going to be I'm almost sure of it a title Pakistan won't be able to chase down and it's moved on now to 311 with a few balls left in the innings and selling them will feel that this is this is a big opportunity and there's always that sense in there there's a new boss in town everyone we're looking to impress and show that they keep in the mind of the new the new coach and he's been excellent just by this from England so far it's the ball again into the deeper model before more runs she is on to 98 how . The men's game has returned to Pakistan. It's huge isn't it because Pakistan is a country that is so passionate about the game of cricket they follow it with that with such determination and the frustration of the last decade or so of having to see matches played in in the USA in front of empty crowds and the fact that Pakistan has been successful as they have in that time is a remarkable thing they've been number one in the world in that period but to have Test match cricket in Pakistan is a huge thing and it will be a massive massive moment you fail in the history of the sport in that country and certainly speaking to members of the Pakistan squad and the team management here in Malaysia covering things for the women's team there's a little bit of a sense I think of jealousy of those back home that are able to be at that 1st Test match in so I was so long in Pakistan because it's a massive occasion and it's brilliant use for the world game something goes in the none of the Pakistani side roads you play a Test match in Pakistan before. The last the thing is and these are hardly Pakistan cricket as the haven't played Test cricket they've played an awful lot of it's very experienced names there and so what a huge occasion will be for them as well as something to to remember and the thing to point out it's going to be a big occasion not just for for the Pakistan supporters but of course the players as well is on $99.00 she just waiting for the next delivery she's going to run for she will get a 100 you can hear the cheers alongside the the new England coach the stands and applauds the efforts of the all round up that has had a quite brilliant 100 she now takes off the helmet rights of the bat around the ground and heading towards the conclusion of this innings with not getting a big hug from her teammate Fran Wilson out in the middle and celebrating an excellent one day international 100 it seemed power patience is everything that you look for and I think in front of the new coach is exactly what was required applause from Lisa caught applause from the England team mates and England as the innings heads towards its conclusion often. 320. 1 for 5 of the catches. And rethink you Henry Moran there in Kuala Lumpur now thanks Sammy Right now I'm 5 lives was extra It's day one of the 1st ties between Australia and New Zealand in Perth this weekend sees the 7th anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting 20 children and 6 adults died when a gunman rampage through a primary school in Newtown Connecticut firing a semiautomatic rifle before killing himself since then some of those most affected have spent much of their time trying to change the conversation around gun culture in the u.s. Mark Bowden is the co-founder and managing director of Sandy Hook Promise his son Daniel died in the shooting Mark to tell me about Daniel. How much time. I you know it's a mixed bag when I think about my little Daniel because I think it would have beautiful compassionate articulate affectionate little soul he was and then of course it just brings me to sadness because a I can't escape the fact that he's gone he's gone forever. But he truly was a light pure happiness in our home and everywhere he went and. We used to we used to kind of half jokingly call him the caretaker of all living things because he he looked out for all creatures great and small including the worms on the sidewalk that he would pick up and put in the grass so they wouldn't burn in the sun and I had. Fellow classmates who if they were sitting alone he would ask to go sit with them to make sure they were Ok and everybody else in his life he was just he had an extraordinary. Sense of compassion an awareness of others does it get easier. To think of your loss as time goes by. You know my wife and I were just contemplating this the other morning and it seems like we've been almost protected by a shroud of shock that. Until very recently we thought like we were still this notion of this can't be real like how could this possibly be real or not some kind of fantastic notion that you know will come back somehow and I think as time goes on and now we're getting to this place where the reality of it is is really starting to become clear and real and in that way it seems to be. Somehow a little almost harder. If that's possible. It's we used to kind of say you know this time of year is just you know it's no more difficult than any other time of year but this year it seems to be really crushing I just have to rely on my wonderful blessings which by son James and my daughter Natalie and our wonderful family extended family certainly and our community here in Newtown are all part of that fabric of a wonderful blessings that I have to I have to remember and rely and appreciate. Is it possible to prepare for an anniversary like this. No we're still my wife and I at least are still it escape mode we we have to just go away be somewhere somewhere else anywhere else we're still figuring out where that might be for this one but we we still kind of escape it and just try to change the scenery of course the grief follows year but we try to we try to do the best we can to distract ourselves and. Again you know I'm worse ourselves and James and Natalie are James the finishing his semester at Northeastern University on Friday so we'll go collect Hammond and then figure out the rest of the weekend from there. You mention the community around Sandy Hook It is remarkable looking at it from the outside this community has supported each other so much it is surprising for you. It's not surprising when we 1st moved here in 2007 we we we understood that we're in a in a very close very warm and connected community and we still even articulated as much that we're so lucky that we were able to be here we're surrounded by wonderful family as caring loving people who we really appreciated before this tragedy and now in the aftermath of the tragedy from an from immediately after the tragedy until this day this community has literally rockets arms around us and protected us with just love and support that I I can't even articulate the many ways that this wonderful community has lifted us and supported us and we're so fortunate so that is something to do with the fact that in a sense you have this is a community joint purpose in your attempts to try and get some kind of consensus of any sort and guns in the United States. You know I wouldn't say so actually I think you know everyone is on their own different journey forward through this tragedy and different people who are directly impacted have their own family foundations that they are working with members of our community who were not directly impacted but still impacted just the same are managing and processing this in their own way so I don't assume that other folks other than the folks that are working with me with Sandy Hook Promise are our I don't assume by those something of our But I don't assume that folks are in the same mindset or you know street same same same path. I know that we have the support of a lot of our community here and they believe in what we're doing but I would never speak for the journey forward for anyone else. The shooting is very vivid on in all our minds a very in the days much as I imagine in the United States and elsewhere around the world whilst you were grieving that you meet unimaginable grief in the off to month. I think a lot of people around the world felt that this was a game changer has it been in terms of weapon control in the United States you know and I appreciate your phrasing the question that way because a lot of people ask me that question in a similar way but they say you know why is nothing changed after Sandy and I and I quickly disagree that. Unfortunately it's been agonizingly slow process but it is a process and it is happening that. Slowly but surely public sentiment is evolving and progressing forward around the issue specifically to firearms in the United States I know that we have the numbers we've always had the numbers the the really agonizing part is the apathy and getting people to acknowledge this and to speak up and be vocal about it and advocate for it in whatever way that means to them whether it's hopefully voting but in addition to that whether it's having these conversations with their their communities or supporting a gun violence prevention organization that resonates with their own values or whatever it is to to get involved getting engaged that's been the challenge. When when when we do polls here something something in above 90 percent of Americans favor at the very least universal background checks for all gun sales and when you know that you have those numbers I mean that that calls higher than ice cream in this country so so it's frustrating when you know you have those numbers. And our federal government is still still seems to be sort of cops that are and unable to when able to affect anything meaningful around policy I think that being said our states are taking up the charge and they are making a change far more successfully than the federal government but we're we're not going to give up. Myself personally at through the work of my organization Sandy Hook Promise you know we are we are affecting change in a different way through. Through exposing a school children to the. To the fact that there are warning signs before there's a tragedy and they have the power to make an intervention and connect somebody to help before it becomes a tragedy so we have a different method will just send you promise do. Satyr promise has developed. Some trainings called Know the signs that we bring into schools and train students at no cost and teach them how to recognize warning signs. Of at risk behavior and there could be quite a range but we teach them to take everything seriously and act immediately and I do tell a trusted adult if they see any kind of warning signs that someone might be thinking about hurting themselves or hurting somebody else or any other harmful act and connect them to a trusted adult who can then take those next steps to connect that individual to whatever support or services they may need before it becomes something more serious through that work we have prevented mass shootings we have prevented school shootings. We have intervened and prevented many many many suicides so we have a we have a model of a system that works and it's effective we are continuing to train more and more students and adults that are know the science programs across our country and I think we're coming up on somewhere around 11000000 individuals wealth use that adults who have participated in some way or another in our in our know the science programming and we're seeing actual tangible results ultimately that we ve you know various forms. The government you need various films. In the United States the local states that will ultimately make changes Yeah yeah exactly in the spirit of a true grassroots movement in the spirit of true social change social movement you get you know people involved in it and enough enough individuals involved enough states involved enough advocacy and and the policy will eventually have to change because it won't be ignored but that takes time that's movement building social change culture change takes a lot of time a lot of effort lot of research. You know we we know that that's the path we're on it we know he can see the light at the end of the tunnel and we're going to just continue to work toward it relentlessly until we get there and we're already starting to see here in United States where just a few years ago the policy platforms around gun violence prevention were a lightning rod issue to be avoided by anybody running for any kind of elected office and now we're watching we're watching people who are running campaigns are are actually building their campaigns around gun violence prevention as a main focus of their platform and they're winning So we're watching this happen now are watching the voice of the people it's now becoming to is is is going to have to be reckoned with by by our folks who wish to retain public office and and I think it's you know watching the March as a winning issue now it's steadily an issue to be avoided if you will note one option then I left. The option of we need to. You know some huge tragedy of America to change the way you use the availability of guns I had to leave because a colony imagine if not certainty who will how mood tragic can incident be for anybody to change Yeah and that's and that's the truly embarrassing part about this is that we have not only that one horrible horrific tragedy who are 6 and 7 year old children were shot to death in their classroom along with their teachers but we've had a series and we have it on ongoing drumbeat of horrific tragedies not only bashings but the daily gun bought by lights that plagues our our communities and cities every day you know there are families who are losing their children to gun violence in the streets of our cities every single day and they're not even making the news much less have the high profile you know supported outreach that they're. We have so so this is this is an epidemic it's a public health crisis here in United States and it's absolutely embarrassing that we are still struggling with this and our lawmakers are still ignoring it and prioritizing you know prophets of power over over the the well being of their constituents that have elected them easy because of the Constitution People talk a lot about that I know and I'm not making comparisons in terms of tragedies like this but in the u.k. In 1987 there was. A gunman he went on the rampage in a place called hunger food 16 people died and immediately the government literally immediately the government virtually overnight the government changed some positions and weapons for example and I wonder whether it's easier to do that in states that are not anchored by a constitution that was written almost 300 years ago coming up 250 years ago also that that that seemed to hang tough nor make is even today from being able to change it yeah that's right and a lot of folks will point to that oh we have our 2nd Amendment you know and that's you know there are our federal constitution but each state has its own constitution with varying degrees of. You know firearms use ownership rights but the fact of the matter is that the folks are just hiding behind that and it really comes down to just gun sales and profits now they hide behind that as a as a platitude to say you know well we can't do anything about this because because of the 2nd Amendment the reality is there are all whole host of legislative and policy opportunities that would not infringe on those rights that could definitely regulate and make firearms acquisition and safe and ownership and use. Much same. For and reduce the fatalities and reduce the number of accidents and deaths and homicides and suicides. Without infringing on anybody's rights so so if they use the constitution they're just hiding behind that. And I just think that's a false argument as this become your life. You know as I was a career musician in my Who what I call my former life my whole life that I miss a much. And I still play music but this has come by my priority in my focus is literally really literally preventing other families from having to live this pain because I'll tell you what. Nobody wants us. Ways would you so you know life has changed. My gosh I feel like my actual d.n.a. Has been rewired I feel like a different person I just you know I mean I wake up in cold sweats you know thinking that that it was all a dream and my little Daniel is back and I just break down sobbing and crying you know I mean this is just ongoing My wife and I are just trying to trying to soldier audience and hold each other up as we as we navigate through this and try to be the best parents and the best selves we can for our surviving children that's up priorities as tenants keep this family together and keep those those kids. Surrounded by support and love that's our 1st priority and then and then after that I do my work and try to protect all those other kids. And this coming just before Christmas and I don't mean to be trite but I imagine given the kind of spirit of. The time of year it's even more profound. Of course you know Christmas time. For many as just a is a time for family and closeness and. Just yeah and for us it was no different I mean we have all these wonderful Christmas memories and especially this week you know I can literally tell you what I was doing every day this week in 2012 and all these wonderful stories of. Sweet little Daniel and and how he you know how we appreciated every little aspect of this and the togetherness of the family component to it. And it's just heartbreaking and it's just I just I don't want to turn away from it because I feel like I can't I don't have the luxury of ignoring those memories because those are all I have of my little Daniel and I don't want to forget that it was that it's just it's kind of hard to describe I guess I mean it's just I couldn't I can't I can't describe to you this you know this this life going forward you know for me this is this wasn't an accident this wasn't an illness you know this was somebody else's choice and everything we do at Sandy Hook Promise kind of is built to last a fact and that we have the power to prevent it we have the power to change that story we have the power to to observe those behaviors and. Then lead somebody to a different choice so there is there is beauty and power in that but there's also sadness and because I know we didn't have to happen I used to break down and cry I magine so my gosh you know. Who's there to catch all the times using to catch you when you have. To support a mention your wife. My wife is wonderful My children are wonderful. My little Natalie is home with us still as a senior in high school and she's she's a wonderful force or at rock you know source of strength for me. But you know I tried out you know I like it sometimes it's unavoidable to have that happen in public and. I can't I can get to one where you have just a clue what you're going to throw up but you can't stop it that's common anyway you know surprise that happens the public but I try not to bring out other people and bring other people down with me so. If I thought you know it's hard to get through it without so without somebody there Catch Me I'd rather work with. Mark thank you very much for sharing. Your going through with us but also talking to us about this is thank you very much I appreciate the time thank goodness.
