Radio Oxford news it's just gone 4 minutes past I thank you very much sir for. Your story. On b.b.c. Radio One of my Good morning welcome to the show. What a white man I I was it was like driving through a car wash that never ended spray everywhere was wipers on full. But I hope you got to where you were going safely was by the way if you are in any of those queues on the roads as a consequence of a very very wet morning we will have the latest travel for you at the best travel service in the county and far beyond Jason Plato he's going to be on the show today Lindsay Russell and one of the biggest names in folk music as well thank you very much Barry. On the radio. That you remember last week Jackie gave us a call she wanted to do the Parkinson's walk in Oxford having being diagnosed with a condition in 2015 followed by a cancer diagnosis she needed a wheelchair to able how to do it Mandy step forward you'll hear from them both next. That's. Ok. Michael. Talk guess this morning Jason Plato's coming out as I mentioned repeat a presenter Lynsey Russell one of us which is only in fact and one of the biggest names in folk music as well show of hands they regularly play the Tassie music festival in fact of They've been doing the festival circuit they haven't put out a brand new record for the last 3 years while they have a massive album to tell you about it now cast your minds back to Friday because Jackie from North Oxford contacted b.b.c. Radio works with asking for your help Jackie was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease 4 years ago and since her diagnosis has done the walk for Parkinson's every single year however she wasn't sure she would be up for doing it this year as she told me on the phone on Friday I need to borrow a wheelchair on Sunday for the walk for Clarke and I know it's a walk but I've just had this week my search cycle of chemotherapy for non hodgkins lymphoma cancer and I didn't know if I was going to be up the walk but I was so desperate to join in this is my 4th year because I was diagnosed with Parkinson's in 20 sustained and to the cream on the cake with cancer this year. I mean to get in I won't be involved because the sort of day out in Oxford where you can either stroll or you can be very very energetic but whatever you do it's great fun and lots of people get involved and it starts school but I just need a wheelchair because my legs on the do it this year I'm willing pushes Jackie you know I laugh and cry on the show and I can't help but live emotional actually right now my goodness me Parkinson's and then cancer thrown into the mix but you sound remarkable. No it lives with you you don't live with it absolutely. So Jackie needed to borrow a wheelchair to help her to walk for Parkinson's that happened around Oxford on Sunday so we put the call out and so many of you called in with the offer of a wheelchair so thank you to each and every one of you including marvelous Mandy from killing saying. You can't help but think oh my goodness and I've got exactly what you need. So yesterday after the show I went round to Jackie's house to find out whether my listeners that's you were able to help her do the walk for Parkinson Yes we did and it is an amazing morning whole gang of us turned up at the last minute and we registered at the last minute and we set off we had a wonderful morning and we've now raise quite a bit of money much more than we expected because it was very spontaneous wasn't sure I was going to feel up to that with the help of the wheelchair sort of legs wheels mainly wheels we did it and it was great and the grand my grandson ended up pushing me on the last bit through all the puddles after the rain that was rather good but we've cleaned. It is looking Ok now you have had I mean you you hoped to be able to walk it initially but you needed the wheelchair because you'd had some really aggressive chemotherapy last week yes it cycles 3 and a lumber puncture. It was a bit tough but it's Ok and I did I really didn't want to miss it because since I've been diagnosed with Parkinson's I've done the walk every September and I know how much it means to Parkinson's u.k. To get the money and this time around for local research it's very interesting research when they will be able hopefully to diagnose the condition and you've completely exceeded your target having a fund raising hell yes. We've passed 700 pounds we thought we'd get about maybe 300 and now we're sort of 700 non-words still rolling in and I know some people are sending checks so I think probably. Well I know for sure we're going to get at least another 100 pounds on top of that is absolutely wonderful and I mean you mentioned that there's quite a lot of you that did it of course some of your your colleagues from the school from son Edward Yes and there was also a 3 legged dog that did as you know reach. One asked sort of pastoral head system pastoral head and Rex is a friend of Bella's my dog and she brought rites along and because we did the 1.5. The dog did and the dogs did amazingly well and they had a good romp off the lead in the park which they're not supposed to do but they were very well behaved it must have been wonderful though Jackie the feeling that you had actually accomplished that you'd set out to do what you wanted to do it got that wheelchair that that you was my listeners for thanks a man and she sat right here are going to talk to her in a 2nd but it must have been you know one of the complement because you know your health it's failed. That's for sure I did feel a bit wobbly but then I picked up after. My. Fill of I am not a coffee. Coffee help get on your Jackie and yeah we made it we made it me had a terrific morning and then we had a family lunch which is even better my daughter right surprised me from Brighton she'd set off half past 5 and she got here really nice and early so we had a terrific time that must have been no a wonderful surprise this is a lovely surprise really good and wonderful for her to see to see you do that I mean you are an inspiration not only to your your family but I think anybody that heard your story on the radio last week because as you mentioned you were diagnosed with Parkinson's a few years ago and then more recently diagnosed with cancer yes non hodgkins lymphoma and stage 4 which is spread quite a bit and so the chemo that I'm having is aggressive and it does wipe me out like. Every 3 weeks but it's Ok I mean as long as I can keep going and I have a dog which makes a big difference I would just sit on the couch if I didn't get a ships it was you she sat right close to you she has to touch you but she has to touch you just next to you just to feel you know you're next. But there she is she's lovely very lucky and I don't want to let it down because sadly her previous owner in Greece. Passed away cancer and that's why not that point I rescued she'd been with Margo for about 2 years and she was going on 6 when I got but it's a friend of the family who knew I'd lost my dog so could I get better homes there's no way I'm going to let it out now I know you've got you've got that wonderful spirit because as you said last week your not living with cancer it's living with you but your damn well going to fight it to the end and I'm very fortunate to live here in Oxford because the treatment I get is just 2nd to none it's just it's a difficult cancer to diagnose so I had it quite a while and not feeling great the Parkinson's symptoms sort of were blamed for they were masking they were masking the symptoms for the condition that I have which is a shame so it's taken a while to sort of get the right diagnosis but now that we have they're pulling out all the stops and I can only hope and will that we'll get there but I'm I must admit between treatments I feel great. Well you look you look great Jackie you really do but look you would have been able to have done this Parkinson's walk on Sunday without Mandy stepping forward and you're sat right here it's Jeannette It's really lovely for me actually to put you know faces to names who I've spoken to both on the radio and if you don't well up you'll step me off again Mandy my goodness me what of what I mean it was wonderful actually that the response that we got from so many people but man you were very very quick on the phone what you had Jackie What was it about her story that made you just want to get on the phone and help well 1st of all it was just right place right time because I was literally in the car for less than 10 minutes and Jackie just happened to be on your show at that time so like you said at the time it's just a story that you saw my goodness look what she's trying to do and I had exactly what she wanted so which was a wheelchair which could fold up and was not being used of course so it was raring to go for for the occasion I mean one day for that you you made Jackie able to do this what that meant an awful lot it's exactly as she described it she wanted something portable that would fold up somebody could attend her rather than pushing herself and it was just sitting in my spare room. It was my late father's wheelchair and we used to do some amazing things in it with him in it so I'm glad it's carrying on it's life what sort of amazing things did did you do with your father in a wheelchair before which you probably don't remember but with West Oxfordshire wheelchair dance group yes of course yes yes yes I see fund raising event last year yes so if you are used to take me on to a wheelchair dancing he used to play ox ride to the sports and they just Center for the disabled and we used to go wheelchair cycling group up a horse Perth. And we used to go around Glen and lots of. Lacey's so that which has had lots of adventurous What was your fault what was your father's name and my father's name was Stan stand rooms I reckon Stan would be most impressed and most most thrilled actually that the wheelchair was put to good use. He's been gone 18 months now just about and I just haven't got round to to parting with air and. You know it will come in handy one day and and it has. And I think that there's a friendship brewing here as well between my man do you Jack you out of the car to deliver the wheelchair and she Kate the 1st thing Jackie did was came up and gave me a great because now I wasn't going to do that because I wasn't sure whether her immune system was compromised or anything but she just came straight over and before we'd even spoken she gave me a big hug say yeah. What what would you like to say Jackie to Mandy well. In some ways I'm lost for words because it took me a while to check my messages and you asked me what time I had received the text message which is very soon I don't think the program had ended but we were all wearing to go I was like I said when you send a text message does she know you're just back you know I know we need to tell her that I was a bit befuddled because I'm a bit like that after I've had the mail I'm not quite with it and then I got round to doing it was quite late on Thursday because I'd come back they had to do the London punch on the Thursday. And I think my head was just I was just floating around with the fairies a bit and then I saw it and I thought I can't believe it so much as you and I was I just let's say a very very big thank you. We had a wonderful wonderful day. And it brought the family together and friends it really was. In the true spirit of just getting on with life which is important and when when is your next round of. Of October so not long it goes so quickly I feel well. But. 3 to go then I've got start radio. And seeing the oncologist on Tuesday Well we you're in our thoughts you know you really are we'll be thinking we'll be thinking about you and so do you keep in touch weekly would touch with you and I think you'll be keeping in touch with Mandy and Mandy with you as well while she knows where the wheelchair is now she needs and say. Thank you so much Jacki it's wonderful to me by says Thank you Mandy and thank you Bella who's just stretched out on the sofa. A lovely lovely dog bell and if you do want to find out more about Jackie's walk so much for Jackie's bold but bold walk that's bold bold walk on. Just Giving dot com and I love to help on this program if you need any help with something similar to Jacki big or small do let us know. Which you can contact throughout the show 109100 the travels on the. flooding it looks like you see me outside lane lane 3 on the monitors a concert you see the queues I'm just watching the cameras around junction 5 it Sound tomorrow morning through 7. Seeking. Seeking. She's. Watching. The be. Me and say it's b.b.c. Radio Oxford says the Jason play says so be my guest after 11 o'clock he schools are. Breaking racing driver t.v. Personalty Banville the head of nest and he will tell you about those things which he's written about in his new book that's to come also you going to hear from one of the biggest names in folk music show of hands around they have not had a new record out for a number of years in fact to 3 to be precise they've been busy doing the festival circuits they have a new record out and they will be on to tell you about that little bit later but this week we're celebrating b.b.c. Music day Thursday in fact will see the 5th celebration of the power of music to change lives all this week we're going to meet the singers from the sound about inclusive choir a special needs' choir that was set up on b.b.c. Music Day last year now on Thursday the sound about inclusive choir are turning to b.b.c. Radio works with their wives to perform outside our building hopefully be nice and dry there in the lead up to the day we've been along to they're a hassle to hear how they're getting on. So I'm Nigel Nichols and this is my son Matthew he's 23 here the sound about because we really love music and it's a real opportunity for everybody including Matthew dozens big doesn't really play an instrument to get involved in music in a really meaningful way so that's why we're here and you can see Yabsley loves it he loves people just listening but also clapping and throwing themselves fully into a. Pretty setting radio these are. He's got lots of rhythm and he likes to make sure everyone else has got rhythm around them so make sure that he's clapping your hands or somebody else's which is quite tiring but yeah and lots of really. I think he loves both the sound of it but also the feel so he'll love to come to instruments and feel them being played and courses. Getting fat sensations for his body. But yes it's the whole sensation around it and ladders and you can see that he really enjoys it when you see him smiling to me to music you can see this really affect him in a really deep the moon a martial way man. The. Great thing about sound about is that everybody is included and everyone kind of finds a place and can braiding them out of that a level of musical ability they can really enjoy and participate so fast a great thing about it. To. Me. Believe me this is just a way that we communicate with history music as well be it fits it's so important his lines are in terms of way the air responds to people in the way he communicates doesn't speak break through music you get a sense of whether he's sad or happy and then add That is David Bowie and life on Mars it's b.b.c. Radio Oxford Jason Plato will be my guest after 11 o'clock this morning but as you've been hearing it is b.b.c. Music day on Saturday celebrating the power music can have to change lives that was celebrating with sound about music quiet but Blue Peter is also getting in on the act they're launching the 1st ever Blue Peter music badge designed by the one and only had Sharon and p.p. To present to an Oxford shiz Verio Lindsay Russell is here to tell me more Lindsay morning. Fighting people I don't know where you buy a back in your home county I know what I wish I was a mushy son of horrid little studio in London but I wish I'd been out that. I'm sure is in London as well how but I guess I don't know I've not left this room an hour. Like as I thought I. Did I've looked around in life right away the key for now I know. Hi Bobbie looking forward to this one well yeah this is the Blue Peter badge is such an iconic badges and I mean is this the sort of badge with you know terms of the design as well that you would have absolutely hanker after as a child yet this would have been the big one for May and I can't I almost can't believe we've not done a music badge before because we've done pretty much every other page on the sons of we've got the gold badge the silver we have the diamond badge for us 60th anniversary last year we thought the sport badge that's been going for a while and then we thought you know what so many kids out there play musical instruments or sing in a choir or you know or in little bands or on concerts in their front rooms we should celebrate that because music's amazing and I think it was a massive part of my life growing up and I learned is tremendous school and I played the piano in the baritone saxophone and so I think good and well received the barrel you. Never heard me play but I sounds impressive. I wasn't very good I did a lot of mining actually when I went Yeah back in kind of sub. But with a reed in your mouth yeah. So I should admit that my music teacher might be listening I forget I'm on my home radio station. Who was your music teacher by the way oh Mr Foster just the best man in the world and that's the thing is music can have such a big influence and he had a massive influence on my life and was so encouraging even when I was a very good and it kind of didn't matter though because me playing music and being part of a band and do all of that just makes you feel so so good it's just it's just the best thing and even listening to music makes you feel good so absolutely So I mean the burning question really was what does a child have to do to get their hands on one of these wonderful badges so all we have to do is go on the prepaid website has all the details as usual of that so thin not if I race through this quickly but you basically have to firstly we wanted to be a bit of a detached. If so go and talk to family members maybe Mom Dad aunties uncles grandma grandpa about their musical memories we want to know what they remember and how they played music maybe it's on vinyl maybe they had cassettes like I dated back to the ninety's and we want to kind of spark that conversation about music and then we wanted to go out and either play an instrument put on a concert be in a choir pick up a guitar for the 1st time basically just have a go at being involved in music like me we're not going to test that your any good or that your next like musical prodigy we just want to know that you've you've given a go in that you've gotten bored with music and then you have to tell us this is the really awful hard bit your 3 favorite songs of all time who Ok it's been I've had some sleepless nights if I if I asked you. From your childhood I mean what kind of what Bass when you're listening to a bit of everything I mean obviously I was into the Spice Girls because they were new on the scene and they were the 1st kind of girl band I saw and the whole girl power thing was massive influence on my life and then just 5 strong women standing there saying you can do it go for it girl. You wore those oh my gosh I just wanted Geri Halliwell is the reason I have red hair to this day she's a heroine of mine still is but then we kind of grew up in the kitchen dancing around to the Beatles and Elton John Fleetwood Mac. I saw them this year at Wembley with my brother because Stevie Nicks is just the biggest biggest biggest hero of mine and then beyond say I remember when she came into my life and I was 1314 yeah I just want to look strong women actually Lindsey if I have told you when you were dancing around the kitchen in your Oxfordshire when you were growing up you don't say Want to the Beatles and that you would be meeting Supreme Court me because he's got something to do with this what would you have said well I would have believed you really I mean he's one of the most glorious people I've ever met it was I've met a lot of cool people done a lot of cool things because. You know being a present to gives you those opportunities but I think he has to be. I couldn't even make eye contact with him without wanting to just sell like he's amazing he's a fantastic storyteller great addict so why isn't just full of knowledge and wisdom I just it was his appeal joy it was magical actually he well amazing man Lindsey thank you so much and Peter is amazing program is pure joy thank you so much for being on the show and the new bads will be launched on Blue Peter Thompson Wes a Paul McCartney will be on 2 and you'll see Lindsay Russell sobbing and not being able to make a comedy b.c. Has not. This is the unanimous judgement of 11 justices. Other countries have this hostage problem and yesterday we had that extraordinary statement by the Iranian Foreign Minister Zarif. the show very very soon but my next guest is a record breaking racing driver television presenter voiceover artist parted bond with an ist rubber Yeah former inmate of the Monaco police department and a living breathing example of what shot if you want to become a professional racing driver Jason Plato is Oxford born and bred and his biography how not to be a professional racing driver is out right now he's done a good read I've been speaking to Jason about what the process of putting pen to paper was like for him it was a really lovely experience and wasn't taxing at all and. Actually the road you drive for different. All the people that are at the previous team or let's just say there's on average 30 odd people a previous team by the nature of the game you mediately delete them from your mind because you've got a new project or a new bunch of engineers and mechanics all the rest of it and even though they're only on race weekends they're only maybe at furthest 50 metres away from you in another carrier you never see them and you literally just go up that's me know what I over the years you know or driven from most of the big teams. So that's probably what 3400 people are just kind of moved on from and it's not because I don't care about them it's just that just the not part of my life at that moment in time and and the books actually enable me to kind of remember a few of the characters and rekindle a few great friendships which have just moved moved on the move away from each other so actually from that perspective it's been really great actually what age were you when you had a very solid dream that you wanted to become a professional writing driver online or I mean you single digits probably 878 some some or something like that but certainly you know I can definitely remember being 12 years old Cianci up and down the country with my mom and dad in the van racing every weekend you know Michelle from a Madonna dog so very fortunate that I knew from a very early age that nothing else in my life. Is as important as that and that's what I want to do and you know a real thing actually and you know I don't count my chickens very lucky to be given that chance but Gino is.
