Put him right up there at the top of the pile so the reason I thought of it is that Graham Greene It's his birthday today or it would be he would be $114.00 so it's a that's a great reason to celebrate why not celebrate this genius and he really was a genius The reason I chose Brighton Rock is there's lots of reasons I chose that one of the reasons is got the best 1st line of any you know of a lot of I read if you want to read a good thriller 1st yes is it which is what is it it is hail knew before he had been in Brighton for 3 hours that they meant to murder him so any aspiring authors out back can get some inspiration because the 1st line is so important I know it really is and that's immediately kind of makes you think was he right which of course he will that's not a spoiler it becomes really obvious very quickly. So it's a kind of murder mystery and you normally think a murder mystery you know light reading and Graham Greene himself used to call some of his books and entertainment and this is an entertainment it's a quite a kind of edge if you will see you know it's dark and it's really involved but of course it's like a work of literary genius you know he every sentence is extraordinary and he wrestles with massive questions of good and evil and heaven and hell and ethics and religion so there's a lot more to it than meets the eye it's got so many different layers you can read it on all sorts of different layers it's a very easy read on one level and a very challenging read the D.P. You think about it and it's also. One of the best characters in English literature and I know it sounds like an exaggeration but I don't think it is. It's got Pinky who I don't know some of the people listening move will remember the 1947 film where I think it's Dicky at plays Pink has a bit of a classic phrase is a classic it was written by Graham Greene and Terence Rattigan The film stars that matter as you say in the film Oh do you think it's sometimes I don't spoil a book on tape no I really don't think it does because I think I was reading a rereading a bit of it today and I've got the film in my head already but I was immediately swept back into the book and Pinky comes out as another you know different character in his own right and he's this kind of teenage sociopath he's very very sinister but you also feel kind of sorry for him is that an appalling life and so great characters he's bringing character great yeah sly It was also made into a film in 2010 quite recently was was and it had Helen Mirren.
