Tis affairs everybody wants to rule the world it's 10 past 6 Tuesday afternoon leaving now really if you looking forward to the oxygen I said gay maybe you can't get there don't forget we will be there every step of the way from 7 o'clock tonight we'll keep you fully updated on what the it's going to be like heading towards the Kasam as well Our be here in a couple of minutes before that but you might been hearing about this in the news today the government has announced it's changing the law so that heterosexual couples can enter a civil partnership in England and Wales in June the Supreme Court ruled that it was discriminatory to restrict civil partnerships to same sex couples Charles Keaton and his partner Rebecca Steinfeld bought the case and he is delighted by the news as millions of corruption couples in this country won't have the protections security they need and the measure. Across the country but what we now see is in addition to the intention we got to open so that we now need to see legislative action well as a as a barrister and family lawyer I spoke to him shortly before we came on air and I began by asking him what the difference is between a civil partnership and marriage essentially there is very little difference between a civil partnership and a marriage in the eyes of the law a civil partnership and a marriage and people who are either have the same inheritance rights they have the same rights of divorce dissolution they have same rights in relation to pensions and other benefits so the rights and responsibilities attractive at attached to large research partnership or a marriage are pretty much the same so really in essence is giving couples who don't want to get married the same benefits but if they were married but they're not married to. A Precisely that's exactly what it does and there was certainly a need for that this announcement by the promise of stem from the decision of the Supreme Court back in June that allowing our. Only same sex couples the option of either a marriage or civil partnership was discrimination we had was in breach of the European Convention on Human Rights and what this announcement by the promise it does is certainly opens up the option of couples heterosexual couples and friggin to a civil partnership as opposed to a marriage you know statistics show there are in excess of 3000000 people who are currently who have been saying that's it we say for God we deal with a number of people who are in that position where when their relationship has come to an end are in an extremely difficult position where there is no agreement about assets or there's no we with for example hope we don't just buy one of the you know one of the parts of the relationship and there's significant disputes about what ought to happen so this announcement certainly gives those people who don't want to get married an option to have state recognition of their relationship and of course to give them protection in respect of their rights in the case their relationship becomes soon Ed It gives them protection but do you what do you think I think a lot of people would take this out from your experience is it something that a lot of people have been waiting for all we had the Supreme Court judgment because that couple were very passionate about it but do you think that a lot of people believe that they want that as well well of course that that remains to reseed I think what's fundamentally important is is having that option that of course that removes that imbalance that had previously been the case and so we are now in a position where couples at least can have that choice and I think there is certainly a significant enough minority of couples who don't wish to get married for whatever reason the ideological will be that they feel that leads to should of marriage itself called Taishan come with it. Our somewhat outdated terminology itself is was at rather outdated so this move it in that sense certainly gives people that option I know that there are those for example of expressed concerns that this would perhaps undermine the institution of marriage because going back to think it was back in 2004 wed Tony Blair of course that introduced legislation in the 1st instance it's often remarked observed that the reason civil partnerships worked that stage opened up to have sexual couples was a concern expressed by a traditionalist that this would undermine the. Notion of the institution of marriage and civil partnerships would would compete for marriage in that sense so in my view I don't think that that's the case I do think there's a significant amount of people who would. Who would not otherwise get married who are now opt for a civil partnership but fundamentally reports of the announcement is that it gives couples that option so the announcements be made what happens next in terms of time scale where we look at about things might change Sure yeah I think that will take a little time yet the government has to consult at the TO WORK OUT of course the technical. The legal niceties of of getting this into place but of course the framework is already there the frameworks or the schools of partnerships have been open to same sex couples for a number of years so. Fundamental that I don't imagine it's something that will take over long to put into practice as a barrister and family lawyer I spoke to him earlier about this change the government has announced changing the law so that heterosexual couples can enter a civil partnership in England and Wales 615. Next because we can tell you a really great. To take. Delivery. Thank you. Tonight from 7 on B.B.C. Radio. 622 now around this time every cheese day we talk about some great books and a 100 books to read before you die and at least the Atkins a novelist the Sunday Times book critic from Oxford is hay to share. So which is the book that we really have to read this week like well you really have to read Brighton Iraq by Graham Greene why a company we've got this far without mentioning this. Put him right up there at the top of the pile so the reason I thought of it is that Graham Greene It's his birthday today or it would be he would be $114.00 so it's a that's a great reason to celebrate why not celebrate this genius and he really was a genius The reason I chose Brighton Rock is there's lots of reasons I chose that one of the reasons is got the best 1st line of any you know of a lot of I read if you want to read a good thriller 1st yes is it which is what is it it is hail knew before he had been in Brighton for 3 hours that they meant to murder him so any aspiring authors out back can get some inspiration because the 1st line is so important I know it really is and that's immediately kind of makes you think was he right which of course he will that's not a spoiler it becomes really obvious very quickly. So it's a kind of murder mystery and you normally think a murder mystery you know light reading and Graham Greene himself used to call some of his books and entertainment and this is an entertainment it's a quite a kind of edge if you will see you know it's dark and it's really involved but of course it's like a work of literary genius you know he every sentence is extraordinary and he wrestles with massive questions of good and evil and heaven and hell and ethics and religion so there's a lot more to it than meets the eye it's got so many different layers you can read it on all sorts of different layers it's a very easy read on one level and a very challenging read the D.P. You think about it and it's also. One of the best characters in English literature and I know it sounds like an exaggeration but I don't think it is. It's got Pinky who I don't know some of the people listening move will remember the 1947 film where I think it's Dicky at plays Pink has a bit of a classic phrase is a classic it was written by Graham Greene and Terence Rattigan The film stars that matter as you say in the film Oh do you think it's sometimes I don't spoil a book on tape no I really don't think it does because I think I was reading a rereading a bit of it today and I've got the film in my head already but I was immediately swept back into the book and Pinky comes out as another you know different character in his own right and he's this kind of teenage sociopath he's very very sinister but you also feel kind of sorry for him is that an appalling life and so great characters he's bringing character great yeah sly It was also made into a film in 2010 quite recently was was and it had Helen Mirren. Ida who's kind of she's kind of in the detective role she's a Brighton local who who's who knows this all sorts of terrible goings on happening and wants to try and protect the young waitress Rose she's getting horribly involved with pink he. And yes so it was that was a pretty good film but I think nothing could really knock that 1st 947 S. The classic which is just amazing All right so if anyone is listening and they think OK I like this kind of style book what sort of Morton authors is this sort of similar Take you think of an example of well I suppose if you were looking at the kind if you know Mark billing good good good thriller ish sort of meaty thrillers but I mean I think that's the reason that Graham Greene is a genius is that nobody can touch him because you could come up with modern examples and you would say yes but yes you know yes but only when you're going to go to you know of course they've got something unique or something amazing of their own but But nothing can can go where Graham Greene's. I think is really just the way he looks at the world and the way he picks human beings he famously said that all writers have got to have a splinter of ice in there so. Now I know you really are yourself that is a semi sticking out there and I think that probably isn't the writer I think you had that you said is that there's a splinter of ice in the heart of every writer I think was his exact words and I think he's probably a slightly bigger splinter Vosh than a lot of us and that makes him you know incredibly incisive and he sort of sees people from a distance as well you know peeling back the layers of skin and appearing underneath him to see what's really going on and that makes him him just an immensely powerful writer you sold it to us brilliant Graham Greene's best day would have been $114.00 so the books Brighton Rock and I love the fact that you say you can read it and make it a light raids or you can really delve into it and it could be a book that you could really discuss and get into the meat and he's got an Oxford connection he was a father and his wife lived in Oxford until she died as you know 98 or so wow yeah so well that takes all the boxes doesn't it Lucy thank you so much for coming in and and share your passion for Brighton Rock and we'll see you again by saying thank you very much. It was Go on it's 629. And we've got your vinyl revival from Jackson ran off to 6 that. Was causing some problems. Now. Well looks like the picture is improving all the A 34. Saves I travel and the I $34.00 behaving itself now yeah not looking too bad actually I think that only a broken vehicle has been cleared now from the A $34.00 southbound from the Killington junction towards purgatory certainly looking at the cameras the A 44 is running fine in both directions as you can down from will look at getting old to the gate that is for perjury so the indicate that all is clear up there once again the A 40 still a bit patchy from casting to out as far as engine of the A $44.00 still looking busy traveling through Woodstock of course the annual street fair tonight just looking at Oxford City Center travelling down from Headington hill to the play a little bit busy still around the playing tonight ring road of course very busy da lot of much traffic heading towards the Kasam through from Cali to little more down to the 7 of a $47.00 Ford was going to be rolled out around to the stadium the outside the A 4 and I'm 5 still a bit busy in places through blatant along Amber because of the temperature I feel It's got a bit of the group at the end of the new from Sophie Alice Baxter and love is you she's playing London on Wednesday night and well kind of a little bit closer to home depends where you live in Oxfordshire tickets on sale now for her June dates next June then she's going to be playing in Birmingham not too far is it and Bristol as well I was well I was in the one on the internet but my friend was due was trying to get tape that tickets last Friday when they went on sale and all know all on hold when you say on hold on the Internet just says we're waiting we know you're waiting and we'll get your tickets soon and of course after the hour all stories sold out and that was the for the cheapest tickets I mean if we want to spend like $250.00 pounds that would have been OK but unfortunately we didn't ready but it didn't really say stretch that far so if you go to see tape that well congratulations but it's tough it's hard work getting concert tickets and I dunno about you but they are pretty expensive it's nearly 10 to 7 let's find out what's going on in the world of show business with Frances Tyler from the Radio Times there is some controversy before the new dance sing on ice series has even started well we've been having these names of the celebrities drip fed over the past few days in a bit of a Strictly Come Dancing revealed story because I don't see the noice quite popular T.V. When it's repeated last year it's not actually get me back on our screens until January but that hasn't stopped some of the lineup veiled now Gemma Collins from town. Black good to me so recently Brian McFadden has been Westlife and save a call and who is often a loose women choose to rent is that some of the names of them but not the one James Joel did he was a former Strictly Come Dancing professional now he's kind of said he's not going to have an advantage against his other competitors on the ice but obviously this is raising quite a few eyebrows because being a professional adult for so many years he's going to have all the fitness and all that kind of stuff already but he has said people are going to probably say I've got an unfair advantage but when I got on the ice I actually shocked myself because I still think he's probably going to be pretty good about you then you've got on the flipside you've got straight playing you've got. Got a name for the press account but she said. Yeah they say can do no. More sort of crossover Party between the shows she used to be a judge own don't sing on Idol that's just confusing as it always. Is and I had to that was just horrendous that's how do you happen to say you know what this sounds a little bit. But you've got to say you've always got to say last year I was thinking someone's going to fall over and have a terrible injury that's always what it was quite good move really much stronger than you were looking for terrible injuries I think we should move on violence in terrible trouble now what is this news on one direction and he seems like yesterday well I kind of that kind of not really split up because they were seen to be doing stuff together but what's the latest well over 3 years ago they all said we're going on a hiatus and fans thought well it's not going to be pretty long with different going to get back together quite soon obviously they've all gone on to have quite successful so I like comparison number ones but we haven't seen them all back together but now Liam Payne is that the definitely. In the band all going to re-unite he said. Actually So now he told me some recently as well because I think . Now obviously this is like many people to speculate he could be joining. That's Mark's about enough and I think it will be one of those things where the Spice Girls will take but they'll have this huge when you know I'm sure whether it's in another 5 years or what and they'll do big arenas and make my own you know don't anymore No I'll tell you don't get me started on talk about tickets can get them too expensive that's for another day finally 730 tonight something to watch on telly or this morning 30 unforgettable years believe this morning is 30 years old Radical it's come pick of the Never as well this is a huge one hour special documentary looking back at some of the best moments and also some of the most cringe in.
