Belts and bad news also united as they were beaten 21 as Holmes who was also leave them both in League 2 sorry in League One in the bottom 2 in League One All such as weather for today no it's not sunshine and glorious summer temperatures the wet weather continues I'm afraid not good at all points of travel much this morning spells of rain some heavy cool and turning increasingly windy staying blustery this afternoon will be much drier with some sunny periods and highs of 13 Celsius up heating on last night so I forget about you I've got my boots on so yeah I hate the incoming autumn winter the shorts are going back in the loft but there is unlikely in the tunnel now that is the likely end of the tunnel that. Actually is going to be brighter towards the beginning and the end of this week could be possibly maybe early twenty's but I am not promising too much snow good then the children back at school I need it to be nice so they can go outside at the weekend so yesterday they were like 2 caged beasts I say thank you Paul it is therefore when is possible right now your stories still feel on B.B.C. spirits asking about chats increase it see right now and well what we becoming more and more open about diversity about gender about sexuality does your local church play its role we've been talking about this story of Lizzie was just 14 when she took her own life 4 years ago in fields behind her local Pogba she was a committed Christian but believed she was gay and didn't know how to be both She fit her parents wouldn't on the stand and at church wouldn't accept his sexuality and her parents have now spoken to the B.B.C. For the fast time. About their daughter I gave you Lizabeth the middle name of joy and she was out your way. So when she passed away so abruptly so tragically out I left us. She beautiful carried her loving very poor soul from the moment you wake up to going to bed an hour. We're literally there is always there. She's always on your mind. So difficult to hear her grief in those voices Lizzie's father now says he wants churches to do what's right even if they're afraid of the effect him I have I'm sure some people think you know that the relationship they must have had with their daughter must have been Mr Breckon down it just wasn't I but. If it could happen to us it could easily happen to anyone else your daughter your son your grandchild and know the people struggle with inclusion. It does take courage but its ability to be able to do what's right. Even when you are afraid. Local Anglican churches teamed up with 11 others to become inclusive churches with the blessing of the Bishop of Manchester and joining me now to talk about the increase of sea change from little more of course but also well known activists throughout the K. Within the church being that when it comes to the community you saying you actually know Lizzie's parents quite well Jane I have got to know Kevin and Hilary is very well over the last year or so a wonderful couple of broken couple a very honest couple and as you heard Hilary say she she just had no idea that Lizzie was struggling with this and I think it was the shock of that and the issue there is that this is what I call a silent killer so many people struggle with it on their own they don't want to speak out even to the nearest and dearest because they they fear rejection and we have to break that silence both as friends as fam. Only and most importantly in church places where people think it's a to boot talk about this and where it's really key that we make it clear that you can be loved by God and be gay Well is it since there's always always so many different interpretations of the Bible and some people thinking it's you know it sinful it's not right I mean how do you sort of make that switch to suddenly go well hang on a minute everything is fine and whatever you thought about the Church of the past and how they feel about the L G B T community that is change I mean it's not a sort of overnight switching on and but it is something that we have to journey on because the lives are too many young people are at risk and I believe if you don't believe that it's possible to be gay and Christian then you need to make that clear and if you actually believe you are not sure or I think this is something we need to you know we want to become an inclusive church say it's what I keep coming back to it's the silence on the issue that really causes so much pain but I do hope people will listen with their hearts to what's happened Lizzie's by no means alone and sadly we see very high levels of self harm of depression of self hate and then even suicide amongst the L.G.B. To youth and indeed to adults to not just young people's problems it's a safeguarding issue and we really do need I think to be clear about the unconditional love of God If we're Christian and actually even trying work out what that means in practice and so you say that this sign is I mean does that mean. Then so I mean you know the state coming out of that sun is making noise How would you like that noise to be made well holding events wonderful and I but that's quite a long way down the road for most people I think just even making a statement either on or on the church's website on it's open on its notice board or even from the front on a Sunday morning but all are welcome independent of their race their background their sexuality or their gender just something as simple as that allows people within a congregation to know that they're excepted. And then actually if it isn't as you start looking at it there are plenty of books out there Marcus Greene who's a vicar here in Oxford has just published an excellent book called The possibility of difference and that's a book that many churches can use and read into my own book journeys in grace and true for just love there are many books out there which often form a great basis for bible studies for Lent work and allow the conversation to happen it's amazing it's for to build a silence that's actually what's caused the problem for too long it's always a pleasure to have you on Jet I know you've got to run away but I've got another guest here with me as well on a Sullivan he's currently doing National Citizen Service to spread awareness of the community through oxygen tanks coming in and. So you tell me exactly what you are up to so basically we in the summer had. Me and my friend I love our friend on a volunteer program called and C.S. Where we decided that we wanted to raise awareness for G.B.T. And Whitney so we hosted some of answer that but now that it's over we want to do more things to basically do that so now we're getting involved in schools maybe off school or getting involved in like a Whitney pride and stuff like that but we just want to keep doing more from now so you had me talking to Jane there about the idea of you know going into church doing an event in church so is it like that with you yeah yeah. It would that be a weird thing in your mind to think we'll go to the church you will do an event there no Ideally that would be something that was really nice There's never THIS far as I'm aware I'm not part of the church myself but from what I've heard there's never been any issues with churches in our town but it's just about like spreading the fact is accepted and it is OK to be Christian I am part of the. Community so working with pride I mean obviously pride something a lot of people know about outside of pride what kind of things are you guys trying to do is events is it blogs is it other stuff I mean how are you trying to raise awareness the moment I'm kind of focusing on getting our school to do some things are just at 64 and I've been having conversations with our head of 6th form about maybe having like a group in our school. Kids who feel afraid to come out to their friends and just like a safe space for them to talk about it because I I know how it feels and I've I've experienced it for my friends like having issues with it and stuff and I just think I would be a really nice thing for younger children to be able to just talk about their problems and just have an insight into it yeah because I mean from Lizzie's story that we were hearing earlier on I mean if this is something that isn't talked about lottery it really can go to dangerous places can it yeah. Well as I said before you need to make it clear that it's OK some people unfortunately do have parents that feel like they can. Talk to and maybe they're in communities they feel like they can't talk to so it's important to give especially much younger people a space where they can be themselves where they can explore their identity without feeling like they're going to get in trouble for it because it's I mean the strange thing generations I mean the kind of you know my generation and down I would say it's quite often the opinion not always but quite often the opinion that. Your friends or your friends or your family your family and it doesn't really matter unless this is some kind of major crime being committed or something you know everyone is equal but it's not always the same for other generations is it yeah definitely sometimes I do. We had an event at Whitney music festival during N.C.S. And I do that and as an example so we had instances where children would come running over to our store because it's got rain birth and a huge teddy and sweets is how brazen happy yeah it was so lovely and then we'd have the parents like dragging the child away as soon as they saw what it was about and that have been like a couple times and that was pretty pretty odd to watch for us so yeah it was an interesting because of the strictly launch last night Dr round she was big on C.B.S. On C.B.S. Was on and we let the boys step a little bit late to watch it my children he said just out the pieces does Dr Raj have a wife and I was like well I said No I said he doesn't have a husband either but if he did get married he would have a husband and he went and I said you know just like our friends and uncle hacky you know some people are married to girls and some people are married to boys and that's just the way it is and he went back to his popcorn yeah completely on both the by that situation you know do you are you hopeful that that we can get somewhere like that it's close off and I don't know I mean it's not easy just to teach children from a young age that that's a normal thing. Parents aren't doing that is why issues from because people aren't learning that it's something that should be accepted so they're not understanding it when they come into my life and I you guys hopefully you might This is maybe an area you might want to go on to work can I mean you seem to be kind of enjoying what you're doing right now yeah I'm really really enjoying it I'm not really sure where it could lead to but I'm really excited to see because I'm really enjoying it at the moment like that and it's a really cool experience and we're very you know I you know I get I'm not sure exactly where it will lead but I really want to continue and try and get it as far as possible. Doing great work thank you so much for coming on this morning how do you know our pleasure to have you all if you want to join the conversation as always 81 of 3. Most parts drawing feeding that little bit warm up with highs of 60 degrees and you can get a full 40 day forecast on our website. It is nearly $25.00 to $8.00 right now coming up while plenty of music from the likes of. The Beatles another have a guess and news from the peas and next year and countering some extraordinary women just how I like it. Was was go Shockey and a good hearts B.B.C. Radio experience 21 minutes 8 Sunday morning with Sophie hay in the drizzle and battling through the drizzle to join me is my next guest Christopher Young talk about the extraordinary women of this is who could sit at banks churches host to a Heritage Day event last weekend one of many special events across the U.K. Making up the national heritage days every September the theme this year was Britain's extraordinary women because it was the 100th anniversary year of course of the 1st women getting the right to vote so here we were celebrating based his extraordinary women with the heritage group involved John and back to public joking and Julie Cordingley And Christiane is here because he's one of the license plate ministers was involved as well good morning good morning so tell me about best his extraordinary women what we have to celebrate we have a great deal to celebrate through time on to the current day women investors have done extraordinary things down the centuries and I suppose the thing that pops into my mind straightaways based a heritage in the sort of the flying in the air field there are they women involve them a receipt within business community it was within just a community and looking back the community through time and I guess it's. Quite easy to look at stuff now and think oh well what they did doesn't seem that extraordinary in the modern day setting but over the past 100 G. Is times attitudes opinions expectations of what women could or were allowed to do were quite different when they were yes I mean things have changed enormously even in my lifetime from what women were expected to do in the 1950 S. Through to what people are able to do now and assume that they have every right to do which they do so what sort of pioneering women were involved in can you give us some examples if you go back far enough you have said that burka Yes who after whom the church is dedicated who probably founded a minster nunnery monastery in Mr way back in the 9th century which is a pretty big deal yes. And so it was there was a quite nice angle to their heritage day with them nominations and people able to sort of really celebrate people they were passionate about yes what we wanted to do was to involve the whole community I mean the church is obviously part of the community that is bringing in everybody else as well so our heritage group who you mentioned earlier wrote to all the organizations they could think of investor and then all those old and they asked people to spread the word around which they did so we had a very wide range of organizations which came and took space and talked about the women that they were involved with that they knew about it was there anyone that sort of brought to the fall that you were kind of completely unaware of any surprises for you well I haven't lived in Vista very long so there were a lot of people I didn't know about but Florence Daly for example who ran a sweet shop in the time born about 893 and died in the 1970 S. And she ran this sweet sweet shop. Also very involved in the church. And when she died she left her house to the church Wow Fantastic stuff and it saved up to 15 groups took part in here in which you must be a pretty place that's. Great sort of coming together it was indeed and it's shows what the church can do is being part of the community of in the town as a whole was a great idea so I mean why is it so important that we celebrate these these memories I mean say Florence died in the 1970 S. I guess where we are already 50 Here's one from that she says with a shudder you know memories can disappear can't lay they can indeed and I think particularly in a town which is growing as fast as mysteries it's very good to think back to remember what it was like to remember the roots because the way the town developed in the past is partly shaped the town as we have it now not just in terms of its structure and its plan and so on but also in terms of what people think how people behave and all that sort of thing yeah absolutely no heritage open days are done for this year but you've got another celebration coming up to it to play with armistice is that right yes the heritage group is going to do an Open Day on Saturday the 10th of November in the church when we'll put up displays about the people from Bristol who were involved in the 1st world war because it's that this year we actually celebrate 100th anniversary of actual Armistice Day It's boggles the mind doesn't anybody think it is a 100 years and then some fantastic stories I mean we followed a set of 2 families of brothers from getting to all the way along through their journey in the 1st war and it's when you look at the sort of the memorials and even in a place like Vista which is you know bigger than say a village like getting to you see those family names they repeated family names and you see you know just more devastation took place to family groups within the town Oh yes I mean it was appalling the amount of death and destruction. But again it did change society a lot and you could almost say it's the 1st time that women were given the opportunity to participate more widely in illegally work in the workplace and so on the problem was when the wall finished a mine also. Thank you I don't I mean lost the job so yes it's fascinating stuff so it's 10th of November it's good 10th of November that's 10 in the morning till 4 in the off to noon price of Christopher places speak to you thanks for coming and thank you and you're going celebrate some extraordinary women investor be on why not on November the 10th B.B.C. Radio works when it's time for the Beatles. Song leg. Hey jade for the Beatles' speedy see radio expect 9 minutes to eat right now we're going to take a muse to the pews guesses in just a moment but 1st a time to reflect and with me in studio is the venerable. Deacon of Oxford to share his thoughts with us good morning morning started coming through the drizzle but it's not dampened a high price when it's pouring out should have already we've got that nice summer now our things have changed we carry our weakness please feel free to share your thoughts with us thank you were my son Sam got married this month it was a wonderful day in London with the church where he met his fiance Claire filled with friends and family of all ages. In my 30 years as a priest I've taken hundreds of weddings I can still remember clearly the very 1st couple I ever married in the Northeast mining town where I was a curate but every couple every wedding is unique and special I've had grooms who cry brides who faint over anxious parents page boys who run away wedding dresses that fall apart I've had male voice choirs and solo singers of how parents and bouncers I've married a Christian man to a Muslim woman and a Christian woman to a Sikh man we've had Jamaican a rainy and polish Greek Russian weddings all in the good old Church of England all married for better or for worse for richer for poorer in sickness and in health till death do us part to be part of a couple's preparation for marriage and to preside at that service for them is the greatest privilege and never more so than for my 1st born son a real rite of passage with its own beautiful ceremony in their home church and then feasting and dancing well into the night it was fantastic rites of passage like weddings baptisms funerals a key markers through life some are religious some common to everyone regardless of faith or no faith lots of parents at the moment are taking their children to university or college or seeing them leave home for the 1st time that's a rite of passage in a way Oxford Brookes students are here already I see them all around me insane Brits others university students soon to follow my children all said that journey away to college seem to go far too quickly the car full of their stuff their minds and hearts full of excitement and also have dread. I live in a college and I can't help seeing all the parents and young people arriving some with a couple of cases others with more things than you can possibly imagine I see children waved off by doting parents then it's up to them as they talk and socialise and drink or not their way through freshers' week the passage the rite of passage in Toronto altered is beginning to be made when my son Sam 1st went away from home we missed him terribly but he was OK He soon made new friends and he'd also been baptized and confirmed those religious rites of passage for a Christian as he left his home family he knew he was already part of something bigger the family of God the church worldwide was already his he had a right to be there in all the changing scenes of life he had a place to belong. There are thank you Martin lovely reflections on what a treat to be able to preside over your son's wedding I suppose nice because you don't get to do father of the groom speech do you say Yeah exactly right my big moment is writing about and remember I think there are 900 I ever had or my togs on my drives on to this lovely wedding ceremony beautiful privilege and then him in the middle I could take it all off sit in a suit in the congregation and I don't like the myth of a coming out of a stage exactly one of some 100 over to the local records talk about the page boys running away my absolute favorite wedding memory comes from my cousin's wedding and my brother my other cousin had a 2 year old boy at the moment of the viral declaration stood up and sang the song that they'd invented to help him get on dressed at bed time which went Let's get naked Let's get naked and that's all what anyone heard in the middle the church very curious was Mark never sent never to go thank you very much but in the big speech you have a great day thank you.
