Drinkers who said It's Cold Outside of the center of a mug or something you have you can figure yeah I have it black with a dash of milk. Left me that right yeah let's talk about the books you've picked a book by Henry James Yeah I've books I'm portrayed in the lady and it's one of its heroine Isabel Archer is one of the greatest creations of English heroines and she is the mace there's feisty Co And of course there are so many books which are full of wonderful feisty female. Characters who basically their aim in life is to marry and is about options is is not do that and to avoid for the moment and try to really affront her own destiny and she has this idea that she can be an autonomous being in $900.00 century society and in fact it's a novel about the ways that human beings lay the groundwork of their own misery just with a bit of context they were with James who is an American and this is written around sort of like Victorian times I think was that sort of a teenager is actually so it's that sort of period in time and it's sort of current to the time but he's writing about a very English situation so to tell us how you go into that with this year's he's an American he's an American and of course Isabel Archer is an American who comes to Britain and and and has 2 very good she's brought She searches and often panelists and she's brought by her aunt too and she meets her cousins and her uncle is tremendously impressed by how wonderful and open and courageous she is and her cousin very touchingly Ralph is consumptive and hasn't long to live but he wants to secretly pass on his 14 to Isabel to give her all the chances in the world in her life and and portrayed of a lady is how somebody starts with those opportunities and through naivety and idealism finds that is outmaneuvered by with kids and feel and worldly characters who are basically only after her money. You really identify a can can feel this with the main characters is a bit of a hero of yours Yeah well actually when ISIS didn't we we had to read. This book and we went around for weeks all wanting to be Isabel option because she was just she was just such a tremendous character but it is a it is a tragedy but it is it is done so terribly well and it's has a lot of comedy in it to you and the thing that I think with Henry James is not to be put off by his style once you get used to and with a style even if they come from a different period they speak in a different voice than the one that you're used to I think you know it can be very very rewarding it can feel like being a fish slipping into cool water you just feel utterly it ease with him and you have to just go with his style and by the end of the by the end of the book you'll realize that there wasn't a word out of place or a way to many beautiful. That's a really interesting point about the voice in your head because you do have one has a book and it's like watching a T.V. Is like watching a film and there's the reason you like it is because of either the pace of A or the the depth of A or B. Or whatever so when it is a different voice like that why how different is it so that when they try to put that in so I think one of the things that Henry James's is famous for and it was one of the very 1st people to really explore this is he was very interested in in the unconscious and psychoanalysis and and he really shows how the life within has a drama all of its own say that that say that within every person there is this inner life and they're trying to navigate their way through the world and she has every every possible opportunity she has all the money she could possibly want she has spirit and courage and beauty and she has to perfectly good and promising opportunities to marry 2 very different but very good and and and and humane people but instead of which she's draw really through her own willfulness to somebody who if anyone seen all the money in the world about Paul Getty somebody who's an American art collector who's based in Florence and the book moves between London and Venice and Florence and the states and in every every location is beautifully realized. In all the money in the world Getty likes objects because they're that constant he can control them they never change and he owns them and Gilbert also and who she finally marries is a man very much in the mill This is been adapted for the stage and screen over the years I think in the sixty's the B.B.C. Did a serious Nicole Kidman so starred in the film as well in the ninety's the same is that I have seen this out of patients and I. That the thing about James is a lot of it's in the writing in in in the internal in the internal secret thoughts of the characters and I think what's terribly powerful about this book is that as the reader James It lets you wouldn't to 2 different characters motives and so you watch this beautiful girl with absolutely every promise in the weld and every every good intention just folding into a trap of to trap. Really brought down by people who were so weak and and so worldly and and and he's hasn't and she's very very modern very and to our apps tragic and it's not an ending which upturned something it's an ending which really is something which makes one absolutely we. Are sorry you are so good at not to spoil a good as well wow I just wanted to find a copy of the but now. It's an absolutely brilliant and thank you for coming in and sharing that with everyone great pleasure a real passion for the portrait of a lady by Henry James book number 50 so on our 100 books to read before you die a list.
