Good morning welcome to what should be Cattleman's show just missing the cat ingredient today she's off sick but hopefully that the next week is Charles with you until one. Later on details of changes and improvements to the rights afforded to Oxford. In the way. Billy Ocean when the going gets tough b.b.c. Radio Oxford and on to mushroom spy what might you expect to find in x. Ministry of Defense shipping containers on a small farm in south Oaks which are probably not mushrooms but there is Oxford sourced mushroom freight farm and I can find out more about it from lead to my mains and to Roger Taylor Smith who founded it and therefore know how it works tell me tell me the secret. Who's going to speak 1st and there's a lot of waving it going after you no no no I don't think you're giving me. Yes that we basically Roger was working for a few co-operative part time after finishing your degree yeah 2060 Yeah and I saw a gap in the market for exotic mushrooms in Oxfordshire and Leeds going to have a fascination for shipping containers so we came to the idea that it might be a good idea to you read. Purpose you know yes press pause there a moment. You know I don't know I just thought it a thing for thinking right they could be repurposed the news in a different way because they are big lumps of thing yeah and just how there are many of them floating about I wanted loads loads I mean I found ours on e Bay Of all places. Yeah and they can be repurposed in numerous ways I've been looking at those types of options for a long time and whilst renovating a house I kind of got a real thing for work and my hands and I thought I can maybe get one of these and use it as a workshop and start doing something that way but it wasn't until Roger came home one day from working for the food crops of insert own kind of kind of isolate there's a bit of a gap in the market here for a product which we can't source locally in mushrooms and she said I think you could do that you know and we've both got passion for food and growing vegetables etc anyway. So we thought let's put to these things together it's fused the the 2 together mushroom shipping containers that do this so after some research online see if anybody else had actually started doing that we found in the us there were a few people doing it so we looked at their ideas and thought you know can we do it here and it just went from there because there is this saying about bathrooms and that you need to keep them in the dark and. Anyway you need to keep them in the dark and throw things out the fertilizing nature is that it's a simple as that no. And it's not strictly true either about the darkness thing I mean for instance we haven't grown with 12 hours of light every even in replicating daylight special day light bulbs. Which seems to spur them on they seem to like that. As you describe the container with daylight bulbs in it and the things growing and I need to ask have you been raided yet on suspicion of operating a cannabis. No but we've got a lot of people wondering what we are doing. You know you know I mean there's a there's a few more things to it as well other than light so we've got huge military controls heating all of these kind of factors we're basically replicating nature Roger you you're the one who identified the gap in the market yes you know what or what brought brought to mind that that was a gap of the you can buy mushrooms here can it while you can but not the exotic types I mean you could now the supermarkets have started doing you know it was to mushrooms but I had a few sort of private chefs asked me for certain types of mushrooms that they couldn't source here. And as being vegetarian as well we're very interested in so diverse range of we've travelled quite a lot as well so we like kind of exotic Cove ingredient thing and so this is how it came out really things are gradually getting better for vegetarians in this country on the crowd. I'm sitting thinking of a not a couple sitting there looking an appetizing but yeah yeah it's changing it is changing and I think with us growing mushrooms like this you know we were sort of you know inspiring a few local chefs and. Yeah people are inspired by the new product really it's well known that some mushrooms are not safe to eat mushrooms can really do you in how do you get the experience to know what you can eat and what you can't . Well yeah I mean we we're literally doing tried and tested exotic varieties that we know are safe to you know to eat. We're not foragers we don't have a massive amount of experience that we're kind of learning as we go along in our own way. But we have had help. From meant all that has been growing in the same way for about 12 years in Wales as well so we're kind of following a bit of a business model and also trying to locus are tried and tested varieties but already my mean we've only been operational for 5 months but we're branching out into new or different varieties that's a different types of or it's the mushrooms that searcher and will continue to do so with different varieties as we go along it's often thought of a guilty to this myself or think of a mushroom as a kind of in consequential part of something. Whether it's a spaghetti sauce or something or just something chopped these up and threw them in there you know and it's all part of the of the war job the sort of density mushrooms and onions make a great deal of the bottom end for you or something like that but do they have a distinctive taste the different varieties you can you tell the difference Absolutely absolutely and that's what we're I think we're trying to kind of pushes the world especially for vegetarians these can be the main ingredient of a dish you know the standalone ingredient and I think we're getting that response from people sure and I think there's a there's a definite trend anyway over the last couple of years where the exotic types of mushrooms is a bit of a boon specially for things like should target people are actually really realizing the medicinal benefits and the nutritional qualities of them as opposed to the normal button Portobello. Well you've brought in her tray of interesting smelling mushrooms about and there they look they look interesting but when you walked in there was a waft of mushrooms and came in and it was just remarking actually before we came on air that because you're around them all the time you can really smell them such as soon as you walked in here to me I got it right this is going to. Pause for a song for a moment turned get us over organized for a bit a sampling and you can tell me what's in the interesting tray. Coming up next. B.b.c. Radio works for them to have a super trouper it's coming on for 20 past 11 and it's Charles with you standing in for a poorly cat until long walk and looking at mushrooms today with mushroom acres founders of the Oxford mushroom company lead to remains and Roger Taylor Smith. Who've done wonders with mushrooms and I've come in here laden with them I was mentally able to do a great smell of mushroom came wafting in but just the smell of interesting as I would describe it interesting. One of the tell me what you've got in your tray. We've got there should Turkey mushrooms that we go now what's that is that the turkey so it looks just to describe it for radio purposes it's. Similar in shape but it's mushroom shaped which is handy but it's quite similar in shape to your diary mushroom that you go by in the supermarket is just a lot bigger and looks a lot sort of more fibrous I would say they quite meaty I mean they've got a really distinctive flavor they originate from Japan and actually you can eat them rule and they've got it off after flavor of garlic actually. You had me a garlic Yeah these with garlic butter and I mean you know discussing amazing how it can be is that safe to eat like that it's raw form Oh absolutely yeah which you know if I were to sample a very high chance of staying alive until. Signalling Yeah yeah absolutely take a chunk of. I was I measure everything against the possibility of immediate death you see. These are really popular. And you get very spoiled after beating the shit or to be quite honest with you I think I've been put off should talk emotions put the spelling. Of the Catherine Tate. Ok. That's what Donald Trump had on his mind when he made that I help remark about foreign countries. For the day actually at the farmer's market but you know. It's not so it's not floppy at all it's a good it's a good chunky chewable thing it's quite robust there's no flavor Why it's quite robust and having that it sort of sit around my mouth a while now I say yeah see what you mean about the. Start of the building they don't like. It's a slow developer Yeah and these are very good for us I should Turkey I mean Misty they're very good for you. So not only about not going to die immediately I'm actually going to be healthy you are so great I think that what's next to it Ok so we've got the pink oyster mushrooms now if I saw this growing in a field there's no way. I would think about eating this look I mean this is this pink it's it looks it's a bit like a complicated flower in our pocket or something like that. If you were drawing for a children's book about you know the Wicked Witch of the forest who's going to do you in with some poisonous thing this is what you draw. It looks like coral to me like a sort of species of Karl Yes but menacing moment I think these are very delicious and the they're really popular actually they're slightly more difficult to grow the pink bit temperamental convince. These olive oil and salt pepper just so to find a very tasty very popular with beacons of vegetarians because they've got in there . But he can eat bacon right yes. I'm not you know I think I think of. Something you know yeah I can kind of get that when they're cooked with a bit of salt. They've got a very snow so you don't convince me that when they cooked you know right. We've got great ways to mushrooms Well we grow about 3 Ford for itas a voice to mushrooms we grow brown oyster grey or. Gold noise to mushrooms Oh yes so Next you need to know why it's called an oyster my Yeah us yes they've got more of a sort of softer flavor and texture than the shit talking still struggling with that pink one. Next to the oyster mumble to friend. These are the so that's the picture I disagree with and this is just talk yes from aborted today we do the golden oyster but we don't have any ready at the moment so we were looking to the. Year King oyster going to be doing soon. Called Peano as well which is an odd little mushrooms Brown looks more like a wild mushroom and tell you. Who knew there was so much to it. Fascinating and you got a couple of bags there of dried mushrooms being nice and easy to stick in something you were making that wanted some mushroom assistant's Yeah I think you can just keep those in the cupboard Yes if we get a lot of mushrooms we just dry them back them up and sell them in the very popular . You know we're also looking to do in the future process and a bit more make them into condiments such as sources etc Something with a funny looking into. Test runs and things like that at the moment too and how does it not tub you have next to you what's that the battered battered I made them this morning. They are mushroom tempura. Oh they're made with gram flour which is to check people out here and talk emotions. And this is. All. Now you've. Got me your take a. Temper mushrooms chili sauce fast yes job done Ok yeah. Best of luck to you thank you for coming in about your splendid reuse of x m o d shipping containers No problem thank you very much lead to remains and Roger Taylor Smith founders of the Oxford mushroom company. A member of British comedy royalty on the show so an exaggerated boat to Adrian had been some good morning morning how are you oh well the grand jury very very good to hear well you're going to be royal. You never know these days do you I mean you know that lowering the boundaries. You know where I 1st made your acquaintance not in person you understand but on broadcast television it was this good I think but we. Feel I was brought up with my. Feet Yes it's the the dangerous brothers who they would rather do you do you highlight the dangers you know I love the digital I actually had to revisit that this morning. Oh I need to see a bit of the dangerous brothers video and I laughed myself silly which made me look after as I was sitting in the corner of the newsroom here with headphones on and stupidly So there you were as. Dangerous as Ryan I was I was ennobled See I told you and and you're a partner the now south the late Rick male. Richard. Family . So a big change coming for you you're going to be making your roll Shakespeare Company debut as Malvolio it might have already made it we've been going since October. Oh I'm behind the times not the 1st. Way We know we've been going since October. Well shakey Yes I'm doing shaky I think she can get. Very bad press I think they should stop teaching him in schools because I think most people get scared of Shakespeare so I think they have to answer some kind of extraordinary question set by their English teacher which bears no relation to the play question the guys are just really I think his motivation was here what are the themes and you know it's just entertainment it was the reason it is a broad entertainer you know and in and 12. Is one of his kind of broad displays really that kind of spans the kind of love a section is the section the musical section you know it's a big entertainment it was a caravan of Malvo Leo It was a kind of Puritan and bit of a killjoy. And he tricked enormous practical joke the rest of him sort of turned against him you know evil but he's not very pleasant and they turn against him and they do this in almost particle joke on him and make a complete idiot out of him because he thinks. Countess is in love with him and she isn't obviously. Very funny. He does make a complete idiot of himself. If the word jobsworth that existed in Shakespeare's time maybe he would have been a jobsworth once you know I mean we had to because many are see this quite a lot of kind of background people come in and give each other lectures on stuff. One came in and gave us a lecture about how because we said in Peter in times he gave us a lecture about Victorian etiquette and he came to see the play the other day and he said the thing I'm most likely the better of you have had he said he said as a servant you made him very employable. Like he's a very employable person but he is easy not very much fun and he could been rocking back on his back and forwards on the balls of his feet going you can't park there mate. Now you're talking my language I would you know I was I was hesitating to lapse into placate. Very very. Well why is it was this something that some bits of the British comedy that just will never die and I know he is one of them yeah yeah. Well I mean as we would say that they're never even seen it. Just enters the folklore doesn't. He was saying about you know school being people being scared of Shakespeare have you been an audience member for many Shakespeare performances. I did a lot of it as a schoolboy performing and then I did a bit after I left we did a Uni I've always kind of enjoyed Shakespeare he does write incredibly good characters and they're very modern very kind of you know their motives and they're kind of drivers. And you know we recognise them all they're all they've got parallels in in modern life so you know and not many people not many writers can do that a lot of modern writers can write modern characters Yeah. Yeah he had a great understanding of humans and what makes them work and what makes him funny or sad it's interesting isn't it you the characters and we talk sometimes about why does something like that is Army still run today as a great success and it's because of the way those characters are created and you identify with them and you you yeah end up loving them yeah and you know we go around saying only the right Captain Mannering you know or right like you know we all these things I mean. So when someone kind of encapsulates this sort of thing a human being can be. That's that's when they become a standard isn't it so Blakey and Dad's Army are like an army. Well when you finish the measure a is on the major a novel you actually you know any idea if you have done editing sometimes when you're writing there's a couple lines in the thing you're doing the thing on being mean John the messy way then. As far as I'm concerned that would be a compliment yeah yeah I know I died and I'd enjoy trying to pretend to be him. Well enjoy the rest of your time in I think you're going to take spare forsooth I wish you a good day this minute Thank you. Adrian Edmonson in Shakespeare's 12th Night is Malvolio and it's one of their all Shakespeare Theater until the 4th of February and they've got a broadcast live in cinemas as well on the Valentine's Day 14th of February just in case you forget the date take my advice never forget the date. No new rules discussed in Parliament last week could dramatically increase your quality of living according to the Oxford Citizens Advice Bureau the new housing bill could empower local renters to force landlords to improve substandard conditions here with more on that our Bell director of Citizens Advice Oxford to tell us about the bill and what you can do if you feel you're living somewhere that's unsafe or fairly unsatisfactory Well good morning the bill 1st of all what's going on you know we're hopefully it's really good news because we know renting is really high in Oxford and some of the landlords are less than scrupulous and. You know tenants live in really not very healthy conditions so at the moment. The rights for tenants is quite complex it's not they're not there's not even coverage between council tenants social tenants and private tenants so it's very confusing and the only thing Lionel's have to prepare you know provide at the moment is somewhere that has heating running water is secure. As your head it doesn't cover things like damp mold in your bathroom you know and there are very serious issues that people have got you know health conditions doesn't cover energy compliance there's all these other bits that are in the private member's bill that went forward last Friday. And do we know how it's progressing the bill and what stages it has or at the moment so it's was approved on Friday to go through to the next level so it now needs to go to the House of Lords and there's no there's no date set for that moment and the year is an announcement about changes to some changes to come through in April this year so. The secretary secretary of state for housing savage Javid said that they're hoping to work towards that April deadline and at that point they're proposing that they're going to implement a database of rogue landlords and property agents. That they will be taking forward convictions are for landlords that are not providing housing that's fit for human habitation and that they will start banning in Tucson banning orders that people who are the most but landlords and agents that are the most prolific and serious offenders and for us citizens advice how common is it for renters to come to you for advice about their or their property position or their read their living conditions Yeah so about 15 percent of our clients that's about just about 800-011-0020 extension 0 people a year coming in about issues with their with their renting quite a lot of incidents of disrepair things not being ripped repaired maintenance issues and then other about Norm return of deposit is all disputes about posit the old you've lived there for 6 years and look there's a slight scuffle more there is a very good positive as. I mean that that's that's still a significant problem but some of it yeah yeah and it's and it's not changing you know we're seeing a rising number of properties in the city being given over to rent rather than owner occupied and there's a you know strong demand for the rental market. So I'm sure you know the less scrupulous landlords in the city think that you know it it's it's their market and they they can do what they want and that's not true you know renters definitely have rights they have rights to their deposit and their deposit should be protected . And that there are sort of legal requirements about deposit protection under absolutely say from 2007 it all deposits were required to be put into their tenancy deposit scheme and then that's held outside of the landlord or the agent and any disputes and then overseen by this 3rd party so so the agent or the landlord they shouldn't be holding that money in their bank account it's held by an independent 3rd party how do you go about drawing the line complaint wise between the you know this isn't the ideal place I'd love to learn ideal world and this is a death trap Yeah so. You know not having hot water is not a death trap but it's an unsuitable situation and that is illegal. So you know people do need to take action on that and we've had lots of incidents of people finding themselves without heating and hot water ever since you know long periods of time so you know if you've notified your landlord and obviously you're going to have to give them access to your property to then come in and do those repairs if that's if it's not being with all of the need you need to seek and then you can come to us or the city council actually has or a team that looks after private mentors in the city so. You know people should definitely you know if you're not sure check it out but don't sit in cold situations and not you know the landlord should be turning those things that aren't don't suffer in silence absolutely absolutely overall is your sense that things are getting better. Well the numbers that are coming to us isn't changing so. I don't think they are unfortunately you know and with the man the way is I know you know people because of their work feel that they don't have a choice and some people you know it's very difficult to relocate and some people will feel you know if I complain I might be kicked out and that's something that the council can definitely pick up on on people's behalf because you can't be illegally evicted you know that that's not an option right so and just because you said look x. Y. And z. Doesn't work that's not a reason they can kick you out absolutely not there we do see yeah illegal Lionel's trying to take legal action trying to evict people harassing people you know and you have a right to you know to occupy the other peaceful enjoyment or so as not to loot Yes Yeah yeah so you know. You do not suffer in silence and and if those things are happening you know the tenants the relations officer of the city council cannot in your behalf and make sure that your your rights are protected and support you in thanks for coming in director of Citizens' Advice Oxford.
