It it's all. These B.B.C. Radio was the radio station 5 past one we start as afternoon with the news that the chairman of the troubled N.H.S. Trust Southern Health has defended creating a new job to allow its chief executive to remain at the organization and keep her pay and benefits of nearly a quarter of a $1000000.00 pounds in an exclusive interview Tim smart revealed the Katrina Percy's new role within the organization was specially created for her as Percy resigned as chief executive last week after months of criticism over trusts failure to investigate hundreds of patient deaths including that of Oxford teenager Connor Sparrowhawk following her resignation our health correspondent David Fenton spoke to the chairman Tim Smart did the new job exist before Katrina took the work needed to be done that's not a yes or no if that new job exist before Katrina took it no. Did you advertise that job so other people could apply know was Katrina the only candidate. She's uniquely qualified for it was she the only candidate Yes So many people that were found like a fix but that is not the case the case is that the over the next few months the work that we've asked a trainer to do needed to be done. In any event as chairman Tim smart or former health minister Norman Lamb has been telling B.B.C. Radio Oxford that the should not have happened I think it's absolute the outrageous I don't have a difficulty with someone being well paid for a highly responsible job but on this proviso that there is accountability with it and that if things go wrong you take responsibility for and and you step down ultimately but that never happened here despite all of the things that went on in this trust and I've worked a lot with Sarah Ryan the mother of Conor Sparrowhawk and the way she and her family were treated by the trust After Qana sparrow hawks death excluded kept at arm's length from the investigation not involved in it at all i Phone was absolutely outrageous it was me as Care Minister that called again on the Health and Safety Executive to investigate whether criminal offenses had been committed that investigation is and he is still dragging on 3 years after his death outrageously and she hasn't taken responsibility for what happened at her trust she's been put into this created job and I just think they're living in a parallel universe I don't think any of your listeners would begin to understand a justification for a job at that salary I don't know what the average wages in in Oxfordshire but this is many times that level for a job specially created that wasn't even being done before. I call publicly on the board of this trust to reconsider this I think it's incumbent upon them to meet specially to listen to the public anger you know mental health services are under enormous strain the N.H.S. Is under impossible pressure that's the. Responsibility we all have a response. To ensure that they get the best deal and this just stinks for my health minister Norman Lamb Well MARK ASPINALL is the former public governor for Oxfordshire at Southern I asked him for his reaction to Katrina Percy being given a new role of the trust I'm staggered. The the N.H.S. Doesn't just appoint people to roles generally they should be advertised there should be open competition and everything that Tim Smart has said in his interview is contrary to that it's a she was the right person for the job and this job needed doing so we've given it to him there are other people out there who will be thinking I could have done that job and I wouldn't want a quarter of a 1000000 pounds to do it should she have left the trust altogether yes quite clearly straightforward than that for my health minister Norman Lamb has told us he'd like the trust to reconsider its decision to create a new role for Katrina PERCY What do you think of that I think that's quite right they should is that likely though do you think. That I think the trust of now entrenched themselves I think they're going to find it difficult to backpedal from where Tim smart left in this morning or in his interview and I think the issue now is going to be that someone at a political level will have to step in and take some decisive action and there's a reluctance to do that because of the whole scandal around Sharon Shoesmith and Baby P. And what happened with her compensation because the minister stepped in at the wrong point and didn't didn't follow a process but equally a process hasn't been followed to give her this job so it's a sort of swings and roundabouts type issue I imagine can trust be restored in Southern Health what would it take I'm very hopeful that under the new interim chief exec who's a clinician she's you know she's a nurse by background the trust can move forward and I think that that's Katrina Percy's leadership was one of the bottles that needed to be learned at the trust and now that it has been from the point of view of her role as chief exec they should be able to move beyond it and I really hope they do very quickly what does this mean in terms of accountability of the trust in the wider N.H.S. . It highlights a glaring hole in terms of accountability it's taken years to get to the point where Katrina person is no longer chief exec and she's still there so actually at which point do we hold those people holding those purse strings and making those decisions accountable for the decisions they've made which have caused misery to some which have caused terror for others which quite quite to be quite fair there are other patients of the trust who've been treated perfectly well it's and we're not saying everybody who's ever encountered southern has been badly treated that's by no means true the staff a very very dedicated but there has to be a point when the person leading is accountable for their leadership and that doesn't seem to have happened here yet again MARK ASPINALL the former public governor for Oxfordshire at Southern on our website today we're got all the latest news sport weather and travel on local life as well as the latest on that ongoing story surrounding the Southern Health N.H.S. Trust we hear about how the rising number of older people living in Oxfordshire could completely change the nature of society according to a new report the number of people aged over 85 living in Oxfordshire could reach 75000 by 2050 compared with just 16000 today in the County's director of Public Health says it's a real game changer for services and means doing nothing is not an option but G.P.'s and campaigners say more funding is needed to cope with increasing pressure on services Meanwhile we hear from parents who've spoken out over their frustration that a school in Killington has been closed indefinitely after problems were discovered with the roof yesterday and on Facebook here from a county council leader who says the latest repair job on Friday wide square in Oxford is caused by drivers not respecting the new road layout all the more a B.B.C. Now the world's most realistic tsunami simulator is being unveiled in Oxfordshire today at the climate scientists at a jar one for the huge tank will be used to test coastal defenses and see how built up areas cope when hit by giant waves nearly a quarter of a 1000000 people were killed in 2004 by giant waves caused by the earthquake in the Indian Ocean and 5 years ago that tsunami in Japan caused a nuclear meltdown in Fukushima and many thousands more lives were lost what doctor in Chandler joins us on the line now from H.L. Wallingford describe this machine to me how does it work. Danny so what we. Think of a big steel box with an opening at the bottom and we have a vacuum pump that allows a straw out of this box and that draws the water up inside and we then have another file that we can control how much. Water is drawn up inside that valve and also release that water and it's a way of moving the very large volumes of water that we need to generate tsunamis in a relatively small space and it's the control that we have over that. Flow of water that allows the most realistic tsunamis models today to be running out of Arctic so it's a bit like a miniature movie set in a way where they would try and create this what do you have of the other end of the wave machine do you build scale models of beach side resorts. If they don't look very much like like the side resorts but that's what they represent say we try and make things a little bit more generic so that we can try and understand. The physics and the science and the relationships behind. Yes So we've got. Sloping. The symmetry bed to the flame that comes up and then we have a sea wall and then a selection of an array of buildings behind that and we're looking at the forces on the sea wall and then the forces on the buildings behind that when the water goes over the top of the sea wall or if in some of our experiments we have a gap in the sea wall representing a failure in that wall and seeing how how that changes the loads and the forces that are acting on the buildings behind and what are you hoping can be learned from this machine the and we could design tsunami proof towns. Yes this is the short answer but we're probably not going to be able to make all of the buildings in a town completely tsunami proof but if we can make some of those buildings tsunami proof then we can create what's called vertical evacuation structures where people can if articulate to those buildings and get up high enough in a building that we know is going to be strong enough to withstand the tsunami so that's that's one of the aims of the research the other is to try and understand. How sea walls and buildings fail so once we know what the loads are we can use those in structural models and try and understand how the the buildings and seals fail and try and make the buildings as robust as possible we've got wind tunnels for cars and for planes I'm sure I've seen wave simulators before what's so special about this one. So it's it's about the length of the wave so. How long either in time or physically the wavelength of the wave that we're generating So a lot of the existing. Systems are ones that we use as a child wanting food in sort of our more day to day testing of coastal structures and they generate quite short waves and what we're able to do with this generator that's unique is that really long periods. We can recreate a half an hour long tsunami wave scale down. In our facility that takes about 4 minutes so it's a single wave that takes 4 minutes to run. And that's what's special about what we're doing so a single wave for 4 whole minutes it's all serious stuff don't you ever just want to jump in with a boogie board and have or have a surface. Very occasionally it's it's it's quite tempting some of some of the waves that sort of break and things like that are. Quite tempting but we get in the way of the science if we could I mean the results of this like weeks or do you start seeing and getting results almost instantly we start seeing the results straight away so we're working at the minute with colleagues at University College London and so we're partnership with them on a year in research council funded project some of the results from that are advance to be published in a journal paper that's very early results we've got and the rest will come out over the next 2 to see 2 years and hopefully feeding design standards and best practice in industry. We will see the best on one of the warmest most humid days of The View Love it Tina Turner in the best good afternoon it's a Wednesday afternoon a B.B.C. Radio Oxford for a Wednesday afternoon on democratic symphonic Pearcey between now and 4 o'clock tonight and as you probably know by now through May I love my technology I love my gadgets and I guess many of us now have smartphones we use them for all sorts of things I guess photography is more popular now than ever before because we can all take photos every day previously it was only the photography buffs that have big expensive cameras 2 of the days when used to send off a roll of film and you'd wait 2 weeks for it to come back and there was even that great T.V. Ad Well maybe not back great or can't remember what it was for but it showed people this is like 1015 years ago coming out of a photographic developing store and walking straight into the next lamppost because they're looking at the photos and now because everything is digital everything is is instant we live all smartphones in so many ways and Apple is expected to announce the launch of the new i Phone call the i Phone 7 at an event in San Francisco later today but there's always speculation about what the latest features will be they keep their cards very close to their chest but what should we expect later in a fried as a. Knology journalist in California I think we're expecting it to look a lot like the current i Phone crop I think the biggest hardware changes are likely to be a better camera in particular in the larger of the 2 models most of the rumors suggested will have 2 cameras on the back which will let it do a bunch of photography tricks probably including some measure of zoom as well as being able to refocus after the fact the other big hardware change isn't going over so well this is again all rumor till tomorrow but you know I think the idea of getting rid of the headphone jack is not popular among really anyone so there will be a couple of options one is you can plug headphones into the lightning Jack charging or course that means you will be able to probably charge at the same time without another sort of adapter you'll also be able to plug in your existing and phones but only using basically a dongle and after the problem with those is they were just fluorine until you lose them or they break you know Motorola has already done this on a couple of their phone models and I never remember to bring that angle with and I'm terrified that I'm going to lose it the 3rd option is wireless Bluetooth is the standard most often used in this lets you were Use your headphones with both the i Phone and with other devices ready some people don't like the sound quality looted headphones have to be charged none of these options are as convenient as just plugging into a head I guess we'll find out later on today exactly what the next generation of i Phone will bring us that announcement expected to start from 5 o'clock techies around the world will be watching Web streaming of that as it's announced I bet you're going to be I've got this intention now of not being hooked into it not getting carried away by it and stepping back from the no at 5 o'clock I'm going to try and find a web link somewhere so I can see everything as as it's announced. I guess like many of us been with numerous different phones I've had an i Phone I've had a Blackberry I had to mumble when everybody had a Nakia dimmable like 1015 years ago when really the only mobile phone to have a word. Radio Oxford 95.2 Now a new production of a show that mixes comedy theatre with the world of songs and singles is coming to Chipping Norton before heading to London gym card ride to Livio award winning comedy drama The Rise and Fall of little voice tells the story of a shy northern lass who found fame through music Sara Moss is that little voice and John Terry the artistic director of the theater Chipping Norton both join me now good afternoon good have you with. US 1st thing's 1st show starts in about a week's time where are you now with the rehearsals Well we've actually quite exciting because we've just started putting things on the stage because we've been rehearsing in London and we've just moved to Chipping Norton this week so everything's sort of up on its feet now and it's really stepped up in terms of that in terms of that blocking so you can see where it's going to end up is this the exciting period you get a kick out of rehearsals you get all the fun of being able to try the characters of try out the moves on the blocking and non of the worries of an audience is this real fun time now and you can turn up dressed as whatever you want 20 turn up absolutely any color you know dressed up as a bunny anything you like. Whereas that's really frowned upon on stage I could imagine I can imagine to try just a little bit for anybody that doesn't know a little voice told me through without giving too much away to talk me through who you are talking through the plot so little voice is sort of a very quiet shy withdrawn girl who lives with her mum and I suppose the place starts. They've lost their father she's lost her father so it's very much an exploration of grief and how these 2 characters have coped with that and their subsequent relationships of the mother and little boys so she's very shy she's very introverted and her form of escapism again without saying too much is to adopt these personalities of these incredible divas and these wonderful singers of the sort of the 196076 that are and without giving the. Too much because I guess everybody knows we are all surprised by what a great talent tree has yes we're hopefully. Going to say so where where does this fit in with you and your real life. Is this the dream I guessed Could this be the dream role you've been waiting for absolutely it's definitely a role that I've always wanted to pay because it does it's a detailed complicated role it's and then of see through that you get all these wonderful singers that you get to impersonate and all these wonderful songs that you get to sing but it's all within that context of the play so there's just there's so much in it that most people if they're lucky can impersonate one person fairly well you got to do a range here how difficult has that been. It it's been a right actually I spent a lot of time working on the one I found I had the part of the through the rehearsal process and I think you find although it's something I hadn't done before you you do find that as a child and is growing up when you do sing along these songs you do naturally adopt a tone of voice it is difficult to sing a Shirley Bassey without really going into her theatrical way of singing so I think it's just being really brave with those choices John Terry or the artistic director of the theater Chipping Norton This is as we said a coproduction with a theater the Greenwich theater in London what does that mean when it means we're working together this is one of the biggest shows that we put on in house or some of your listeners know we make about 3 shows a year in Chipping Norton but this is a really big step forward for us it's a sort of play meets musical in a way because it's stuffed full of this extraordinary fantastic music of these great sick 970 S. Divas it's quite a big cast it's a wonderfully funny play and it's it requires a big set it requires you know a lot of things that are a big step up for us as a theater so we're working together with the Grange theater in London and you know we're just really excited about what's coming our way in in the next couple weeks he said it's the big. Co-production in terms of money and in terms of staffing in terms of the sort of scale and the ambition of the show I suppose because you know there's some phenomenally complex parts in it we've got a wonderful actress called Julie Armstrong playing Sarah's mother here in is just a mountain of a part because this woman never stops speaking she's this sort of astonishing kind of motor mouth woman who kind of drives a little voice into into a sort of quiet corner and then we've got Sarah sort of wonderful performances as this sort of girl who on the one hand can barely speak but on the other hand suddenly can sing Shirley Bassey or Marilyn Monroe and take not people's wigs off with it so it's really exciting you all the artistic director of the thirty's Chipping Norton does this mean this coproduction mean that you don't get complete control of it your your haggling with I guess the artistic director of the Greenwich there's a London there's not been too much haggling no this one is sort of creatively our show so it kind of began with us it's been largely made with us and I think for granted it's an exciting opportunity for them to be part of a show that is not just arriving with them but that they're involved with their sort of excited about how it's got how their audiences are going to react to it is a much bigger theater there than in our very small auditorium and it's great for us and for a lot of our cast to have a show in London and have a lot more people able to come and see it than are relatively short runs in Chipping Norton what do you think it will feel like Presumably your gone see it when it opens in Greenwich as well that'll be your show in a different theater I know you've done this before but what does it feel like it's wonderful it feels really exciting and I think part of what we're trying to do is the theater at the moment is get the work that we make which we feel is quite unique quite special out into the world a bit more so this is in fact our 2nd show in London this year we've had our production of the Kreutzer Sonata transferred to the Arcola theatre in July and we've also had an 80 date national tour So whilst we're this sort of very small beautiful little Victorian. Playhouse in a small Cotswold Hilltown this work that we make wish you know up until now hasn't been able to be seen anywhere else is starting to get out into the world but certainly for your listeners Chipping Norton is the place to come over the next few weeks now I don't want to make anybody else in a studio blush but how important was it to get the right person in that leading role it it's what everybody's expectations are for the show is you know who's playing little voice and I think that the challenge that Sarah house which she come she can tell you a bit more about is is how do you make a character who barely speaks who barely makes a noise who hides in the corner of the Sofer and hopes that everybody will overlook her how do you make a character like that come across as the sort of protagonist that's going to lead this story through so it's an exciting challenging part and Sara how big a challenge was that for you or is this you quieten subtle behind the scenes and then this fantastic performer on stage oh I don't know about I think it's probably elements it's a crossover but I think it is the thing that's the key is that dichotomy of the fact that she she is very shy and yet there's this this outlet that she has but I think what one thing that the director by knew was very you know we were keen on it not being was this sort of X. Factor story of a shy girl who just wants to be on stage that's not the case at all this these voices in this is a means of expression for her and as a very shy you know potential acrophobic person she chooses these powerful strong diva women to express herself through so it is that balance and that's something that we obviously keep you know finding in evolving every day but but you know you'd have to come in come and see it to see how we work that one out a fantastic show there I know will surprise many people can you stay with us because I want to talk much more about the role about the research about the planning about everything that's gone into it after this. I am. Mother. Deonna war record on war with her she says and all the love in the world I think she should be made to travel to war it can be told how the place should be pronounced 19 minutes past 2 Joining me. Star of little voice and John Terry the artistic director of the theater Chipping Norton at this because of the new show which is coming The Rise and Fall of little voice to the Chipping Norton theater all the things the chip you know before heading to London Sara I noticed by the way on your your your Twitter bio you very proudly say you're currently in rehearsals for this is an exciting time rehearsing as it is yeah it's a really great opportunity to play around with different ideas make mistakes try different things out it's a it's a really you know in the process that created is a very collaborative space as well so it is a safe space for people to have fun with their parts so that means I'm just going to ask you know my own going to try and find a way to. Bring this to life in some way because you play numerous parts or you play one part and as one person the impersonator many of us has that taken a particular skill not just to refine a role on the part but I guess to refine numerous parts in terms of the person Nations Absolutely and it's been something that I've tried to kind of compartmentalized so work on the impressions separately and then you fit them in and then finding a way for her to segue into those characters is obviously something else in itself so there is in terms of the actual singing so that the way that I've approached that is sort of as a singer just to find different aspects of my voice and how you can do that so knowing with Judy Garland that earlier duties very different from Les to duty but she always has that same kind of brought it that she uses so so one of the songs is the man that got away and that's one of my favorite And so it's sort of the ON A It is bit the stars of the last there. And she kind of always has that deep brought in and you try and get that emotion across as well whereas you have someone like Marilyn Monroe and it's all you know it's all that appeal she's always playing to camera and it's that breathiness and it's the you know. One meal loved you just see and nobody else but you and she can never quite hit those lower notes and she kind of does it in her speaking voice so it's just those details that I've tried to start with and then obviously make There's a lot bigger in bring that physicality into it as well have you always enjoyed doing a person Nations has this been the dream Rolly been waiting for because you've been doing in person Asians of these characters for years no no party tricks no when people ask you like what's the voice that you can do you know in fact most of my friends would say how Natori bad I am accents and sort of the anti party trick so why did this appeal when you saw this role Oh I say I've never done it but as I said equally as a child I think you do naturally. Tend to adopt these voices when you sing those parts just whether that's in the shower or or on stage dream role because it's such a wonderfully in-depth character and I was and you know I've mentioned this a couple times but as as a woman there are often these these roles that you can that you get to play and she's one of those and obviously the chance to sing as well not only in her own voice stage of the show but in all these other voices like what fun you've talked about impersonating the characters does that mean compared to a regular production or speech play versus more on your shoulders I guess I'm guessing here but in a regular speech play I guess you sit down you know table reading is you've got the director there he says bring a bit of this I bring a bit about it you've got to do I guess a lot of the research yourself you know to listen to the music listen to the artist's work and your head what the doing how to bring it out just put a lot more on your shoulders I mean I'm spending quite a lot of night sitting with you watching You Tube clips R T 2 clips like dancing to Shirley Bassey I'm a. Yeah so I'm trying to get my research in and it's but then of course it's there's only so much I can do as well because it's I can feel what I think I'm doing to him to create that carrot to be equally someone has to look at you and be like well actually that's the sound but to look more like this character you need to you know mall or you need to hold your shoulders the same way so yeah there's a lot of research that's gone into it but equally it's very much a collaborative we've talked about Shirley Bassey we're talk about Marilyn Monroe are they all all or are they all classic singers from like 304050 years ago yeah we've got move wasn't she wonderful singers and we've got some Edith P.I.A.F. We've got lots of G.-D. Garland lots of Shirley Bassey which I will say for people to coming sing the show . We have got some Peggy Lee We have got here we got Luke we've got a we've got some really. Got some home and that's all you need for. One word that's a perfect jumper you're the artistic director of the theatre Chipping Norton a big show for you I guess it's all go now for next Wednesday the opening date is all that is all go we're very excited we're also all dancing to Shirley Bassey in our pants every night as well it's all go and you know we're looking forward to showing this production to people of Oxford cheer tickets are on sale now you can visit the website which W.W.W. Dot Chipping Norton theatre dot com or give our box office call and and come along and see us it's a beautiful theater and having a show of this scale and this energy in that tiny auditorium I think is going to be really were thrilling finally what matters here more what is success is it the numbers of people numbers of bombs on seats and money or is it critical reviews how do you define success for a show for any show but for a show like this I think for us for a theater like us that is very much part of its community that's very much about being here. For people of North Oxfordshire I think for us it's about these productions speaking to and connecting to our community you know hopefully they come in recently decent numbers. And feel like the show is for them so I think that that that for us is the benchmark where I mean for and I'm not allowed to talk about rehearsals and bunny suit that's right OK that's fine Sarah Mass John Terry great to see a show opens next Wednesday next Wednesday until the 24th we wish you the very best of luck thanks for joining us thank you. Just one of the things I can do I know you could say I haven't really improved since about the age of 16 but cheese on toast is a good thing now here's where it's gone wrong for some reason I don't understand why I can't seem to make cheese on toast anymore looks great tastes great every time every time now it's the smoke alarms at my place honestly evident the last 5 times I've done cheese on toast Yes it's set off the smoke alarms they haven't been on fire hasn't been too much of that stuff around it's been fine it's been fine but for some reason I seem to have set off that maybe that it maybe I set off the smoke a lot maybe that it maybe. I've done cheese on toast and you can guarantee. All the way through maybe maybe it's not a smoke alarm maybe I've got the world's 1st. Coming up next I'll chat with Linda rob someone who is supporting Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and it's a story that's very close to her own heart talking with Linda Robson next. 7 So based on the whole that she wanted Wednesday September the 7th. Wedded August waited September style to get its B.B.C. Radio Oxford 95.2 Now everyone of us has probably been touched by cancer in some way if you've not had it yourself you'll know someone who has. It's Childhood Cancer Awareness Month something Elliott from Oxford knows all about he developed an abnormal swelling on his leg when he was 16 it was diagnosed as a rare type of soft tissue cancer he's now 19 and fighting the cancer for the 3rd time. And. And the type of counseling. Which develops in the soft tissues in the body and it can start anywhere and it can spread anywhere in the body and can spread very quickly the treatment for this type of cancer is always intense and this is something I've been going through for the last 3 years when I had a boloney amputation back in 2013 I was also a bit of shock to everybody and people said do what you want well basically it's your life you do what you want with it so that we decision that only you can make so I went ahead and. I turned out to be very good with that kind of prosthetic. Voted my family life is definitely brought us closer. I think it's for the better because for the 1st time in my brother my younger brother we go to Oxford you know to games together and that's something that we've never really done we've never really done stuff together but we do that more often now and I think that's great my message for people who are dealing with the type of cancer is also you keep going don't give up and the end result is going to be worth. Actress Linda Robson best known from birds of a further is helping to raise awareness this month Linda I guess it's one of those scariest words isn't it cancer Oh God it is for so many families and in particular in the you can 10 families each day get the news that their child has cancer and you can imagine getting that knows it must be the most devastating thing you mention here in your life after 3 children and grandchildren thank God every day that they're really really healthy but I'm a trustee with children a cancer and have been for the last 12 years and they've raised 2. A $100000000.00 pounds towards research and finding cures and treatments for children to cancer and they have merit I have. A Windows lottery that we do and we've got some adverse coming out. Since the beginning of September and they're running till the end of the year. And it's. How that's a BAFTA award winning director and writer he's actually filmed the adverts and they're they're quite moving but they're very positive because it follows a younger one after she gets the news that she's got cancer in our family and therefore at that but at the end she comes through the other side and you know hopefully she's managed to fight it she's in remission and this is something that's very close to your own hearts because while you say you or your family or your children or grandchildren are OK and I haven't been touched by this sadly your family has yes quite a few members of my mom's family in particular. Were big smile because my dad died of lung cancer aged 57 and my mom had cancer and also dementia and died 4 years ago our. Brothers and sisters she comes of one of the same big Irish family. And quite a few of them died of lung cancer. You know obviously I don't think there's anyone in this country that hasn't been touched or doesn't have someone that's been affected by it well here maybe more unlucky the most having lost both parents how badly they're feeling when both went well I mean I'm 58 now and my dad died at 57 and I remember thinking at the time that he was proud of me get to that I didn't actually he was a really really young man but it's just been your life in your twenty's and and that but he was diagnosed one way can died with lung cancer a week later and I had just given birth to my daughter Bobbi which is why she's called Bobby after my dad's. Wake it was like euphoric had just given birth to beautiful baby girl and the following week or last my dad's. It was probably the most traumatic time and I often feel guilty looking back because I was mourning my dad instead of like enjoying having just given birth to you know by how much experience and knowledge of it did you have before your father was diagnosed. I just think I mean I smoked as well in those days like most as my that it's not for money was probably about the same filter in my Mom exactly the sign I used to smoke cigarettes and also when I got pregnant with Lauren I mean Lawrence 33 now I smoked during the pregnancy because that's 3 years ago with 30 full years ago he didn't know the side effects had dined treated each much smoke while you were pregnant overstate the time I had Louis who's 24 I hadn't spiked up smoking and the same with Bobby and that I just think in those days we weren't as aware as we are now how passionate about this I mean with your children where you very passionate about the no smoking thing right from the old guard markets are so anti smoking because Lauren in particular remembers grandad Dion at such a young age and invite him for breath and that as I said I thought you had chest infections and going backwards and forwards hospital and then I sent him actually to a private doctor because he lived in fact and it came time to visit as and when I saw him I know that there's something really seriously wrong so much 2 sisters took him to the doctors and while he was on the journey home they rang to tell me that you had lung cancer and as I said live in the wake he died. It was like a big shock to us all whereas with my mom she'd been ill for quite a long time so I was sort of preparing ourselves for it it is a bit of a lottery there was no because while reducing or ending smoking reduces the chances greatly it doesn't eradicate the chance of getting cancer now it doesn't and it's there and it's why we for all of as you know people friends at the time you know I always checking to make sure there's no lump so my sister's just got through she's just that came out right at therapy she had breast cancer and she's only 55 so that . Was a complete shock to us all as well but touch wood she's doing really really well now she is only $55.00 and that's it you tend to think it affects adults but letters Childhood Cancer Awareness Month at that same as even doubly unfair it really does because I mean the good news is that if you were diagnosed with a brain injury or with leukemia years and years ago when I 1st started working with a charity which is 20 years ago it was virtually a death sentence whereas now I mean there's so many different treatments and cures that 3 quarters of the children that die and I was actually go on to live you know quite healthy lives but it's still that cool that we need to have to fund and to find more research into making sure that we can have acted on this with children you are trusting children with cancer what does that mean or does that mean you do well we're still responsible for what we do with the money really so I've got trustees meeting next week and we'll see a rant and then they'll be lots of people asking for donations we give money to clicks Arjun and we also are open. House he's quite near the hospital so that families of children that glance through treatment can stay and be close by to their children which is obviously really important the hospital have the facilities for parents and that to stay and just sort of you know there's a group of us could talk to myself Sandra and say that are responsible for where the money gals Is it tough for you your known you're known as an actress you're known primarily as a comedic actress people obviously when they meet you I guess expect you to be funny all the time and yet in your life you've had an awful lot of sadness to deal with I think probably the same as a lot of other people really you get a certain idea in life and you know a lot of people of my age I'm 58 now. I have a nurse in their parents or they've lost their parents or whatever I'm fortunate in that I've got you know 2 sisters and a really close family that we all sort of there to support each other some people are not so lucky. I would see myself as quite full tonight really you know as I set up a very lovely children and child and have one on the Y. And. I would go a good network around us just wonder as a trustee of children with cancer have they ever asked you whether you could involve invoke in some way your acting profession whether you could. Put on something and use your other skills not really. Given speeches lots of times at the bull with them laughable every year last year the bill rise to $400000.00 pounds. I got my kids involved as well I did the math initiave children can see my son did issue models did last year my nephews are involved in that way and I actually did a voice out of a for the ad at the moment that I did not. Know if somebody wants to find out more about Childhood Cancer Awareness Month what I can go to children with cancer. Who is looking to people to run the marathon for us and as Linda's lottery on and we also do a bike club as well as quiet as you can help mentor up some of the like to talk to you continued success thank you very much I speak. Rankings list for the 5th year is Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the US B.B.C. Radio Oxford news it's 3 minutes past 3 weeks which is 6 in the. Radio Works I love going to sit. Really beautiful. 23 degrees in the city. But. Coming up. To do was. You. Know what happened to be able to. Gather what we're going to try to do that here in the. We're going to play on the radio. On the radio. On the. Radio. Ily. Knowing Me Knowing You apparently we can save an absolute fortune I was hearing the other day if we turn off ridges is it down a bit or up a bit either we turn off or just up a bit of the cooling stuff down more so stuff say is longer fresh I think that's the idea. Of the king of this anyway because I put nearly everything in the fridge just on about this the other day and I said Really everything in the fridge so well everything goes in the fridge that's my store for food of any kind Everything goes in the fridge even jars go in the fridge brown sauce tomato ketchup goes in the fridge bread goes in the fridge tastes much better crisps of course think of the name seriously if you haven't tried it put your crisps in the fridge they taste so much better they're richer they're full of whatever kind of crisps you go for they taste so much better if they're kept in a fridge I keep virtually everything in a fridge even stuff I know probably doesn't need to be in a fridge causes no problem so my fridge is bung full of every food and food product is it just me that's all we had like this are you with me on this do you keep things in your fridge as well or things that other people see as weird I just see it as the store for everything that I have this song is now one it was a great classic song anyway. But it was prompted by a video. About a week ago I'm not sure. But if. Well imagine what it would be. 1000. 1000 of them put them in our sports stadium of some kind on got them all to play one classic song The Everybody knows well I'm going to. Play the original version and just imagine what it would be like if $1000.00 people all started playing this at the same time . USA USA USA You know nobody called. Understands what comes in front of your face on Facebook or why but if you see that video of a 1000 people in it to Reno and actually playing this song it's just stunning watch it listen to it's fantastic the original David Bowie and Rebel Rebel 313 B.B.C. Radio Oxford 95.2 you know we live in a great city if you love history being outdoors and all great city of Oxford this could be the perfect thing for you Oxford official walking tours are looking for new tour guides to help showcase our fantastic city to visitors I've got an image of me in that jacket already Felicity Lewington is a tour guide and will be responsible for training the new recruits how did you become a guide by the way good afternoon I became a guide because I 1st went to blend in Paris where I worked the house of the house guide and I so enjoyed opening up the history of Lenin but I then decided that I might like to try Oxford City and so I went and put my name on a waiting list at what was the bit of information center and the rest is history so to speak I was trained in 2005 and I've been working up a certain Now is there a big call for tour guides are there many people who want these toss there are I mean Oxfordshire itself has a huge number of people who come in every year and so there's 26700000 visitors to Oxfordshire and so we do get a lot of visitors into the city and yes people do enjoy walking tours so they want to know more about our city and county What does it involve being a tour guide where you've got to be fit you've got to be prepared to go out in all weather we never. Cancel a tour because of bad weather so if it's raining or snowing we are. Surely when it pulls down nobody turns up there nobody wants to go walking in the rain did I know they do because people pre-book they do so we just they have umbrella they have the rain. Coats and the strain guides we know the areas to take them where we can get a bit of shelter and luckily most of the time you know it does stop raining. And say we can still give them a fun tour how much do you need to know about it before being a tour guide Well in reality very little I knew very little about the city I don't come from Oxford myself I come from the north of England so I didn't know very much about the city or 2 but I did have a love an interest in history and so I learnt most of what I needed to know on my course which I took in 2005 and of course I've been learning ever since because you build and build your knowledge. And what's what's the fun of his one what part of it do you enjoy the most it is such good fun opening up a city to people and pointing out the cookie the beautiful and the fun and I always try and make my tours as most of us do in the guild of guides as topical as possible so you know for example Ed Balls is in the newspapers and in the press at the moment for his strictly performances where I believe he's doing a bit of the dancing edibles educated here at cable college to the north of the city and so you try very hard to bring in something interesting and topical that people go oh yeah OK you didn't know that I guess you've got people from all sorts of countries a whole different nationalities all sorts of races different countries find different aspects of our history more fascinating yes I think they probably do I think. People who come from Australia from America from or was our old empire all really tap into and understand the Rhodes Scholarship which of course people in this country are not entitled to apply for because it's only the English speaking countries of the world so when we talk about sessile roads and we go and have a look at Oriel college which he attended they all not away madly because they know about it. The Chinese are just absolutely loved taking lots of photographs so you have to be quite careful that you don't leave them behind for if you're walking on but he has people respond differently and that's part of the pleasure is that all my toes you have people from all over the world I've had people from every country that you could possibly name it is amazing oaks that is a magnet because it is the premier university in England though how does it work do you get into conversations with. People or you leading them almost pied piper like revisiting you know. We like to start our toes by finding out a little bit about the people on your tour so we have to turn up 15 minutes before the tour and the people who bought the tickets the punters are there and you start asking questions and you start a dialogue we only take a small number around the maximum number in the Tories 19 so it is it is quite doable you can get to know each other and then you can tailor make the toe around them so if you have got Australians or Chinese you can try and bring in something that would mean something to them about their country and what interests them so yes of course they have to follow you. But it it's we're very much an interaction and we welcome questions and we try very hard to answer all of them sometimes not always successfully so it isn't just standing in listening to a citizen interactive I know you're looking for new told God Now I don't know why everybody is obviously going to be different but generally are you looking for somebody who can I don't know for want of a better phrase act a bit like. A history professor presenter on T.V. Giving you the facts and figures are you looking for somebody who's a bit of an entertainer I think it's a little bit of everything it's got to be somebody who's enthusiastic somebody who smiles a lot and somebody who's very keen to get. Interesting information about the city so it's a little bit of all of those different facets forgive me for asking the really rude question of these paid positions you say are we the guild of guides is a group of guides and we're all self-employed and we work as much as or as little as we want for example I own a teacher and I've worked for the time that I've been a guide as a full time teacher and I've done my guiding in the holidays and in my own free time but yes. We are paid through experience Oxfordshire who were contracted to and we work as much or as little as we want and to most people intend to do one or 2 tolls a day or do you do like 8 hours a day of composting you know most people are doing one tour a day but of course there are guides who it is their main career and so they may very well be wanting to do 2 tours or even 3 tours a day and many of them are working for the hotels in the city as well as having their own websites and promoting themselves as well and I bet you'll get frequent calls from the people who are on the tolls and by the way if ever you come to my country look me up and sailor Yeah absolutely you do genuinely make friends for people because I think the other thing is as a tourist it's just nice to speak to somebody who knows a little bit about the city and to have a genuine interaction with them because sometimes on holiday you don't actually get to speak to very many people because you're being moved around or whatever and it is nice yeah people are very hospitable and I have kept in touch with monitor the people I've taken around somebody thinks they could be the next walking tour guide Fox But how can I find em Oh well please what we're doing in conjunction with the open doors weekend myself and a colleague of mine Terry Bramble who is also a trainer where doing to Fritos Terry is doing her tour this Friday the 9th of September for 1 hour from 132230 I'm touring Wednesday the 14th of September at 12 o'clock to 1 o'clock we're doing a highlights tour as it's called free and if you would like to go online and find out and book a place that you're very welcome to amass is. Where if I got that written down somewhere I might just have to have a little look for that I guess just doing a search on Leo your favorite search engine would pull it up yes it would yes walking to talk. It was the last song he did before going solo and having a worldwide hit with. The. Techniques and the song which had never been tried Group but they were heavily influenced by The Beatles The Who The Holly is the sole focus is the raspberries on lead vocals Eric come on his last single with them before going solo and having that massive hit with all by myself the raspberry is an overnight sensation.
