No rain. To make the rain. Do. Their. Thing my. Let. Them. Do it. Aisle and. Global Washington and just the 2 of us on B.B.C. Radio now have a listen to this just so candles. For candles. Your book. For candles were day off for candles. For candles and also for weeks I. I to go on is with the famous for humble sketch of course going to admit it you got a smile on your face now haven't you probably feeling a little bit happier than you were 30 seconds ago if you wanted evidence that laughter is the best form of medicine Well there it is all or is it well research has from the University of Nottingham or aiming to check that point once and for all compete of horrors professor of Health Psychology at the University of not him good morning to you good morning this is all about research into flu Japs it is yes say the reason we focused on flu vaccinations is that although they're an incredibly effective way of protecting people and the community at large from influenza we know they don't work well for everyone so in older people for example who are the most vulnerable we know that levels of protection can be between 20 to 50 percent and if you compare that with younger people you know that's not very favorable younger people you see levels of protection closer to 70 to 90 percent so we've got to. Act a treatment if you like that could be very effective but we know it's not as effective as it might be in the people who are most vulnerable So what research is taking place so far so we've been working in this area for a long time and I guess that the key study that's worth mentioning is one that we did a couple of years ago where we set a. Out to explore what are all the psychological and behavioral influences on how well vaccinations works it might be of some surprise to your listeners that in fact we've known for about 40 years now that there are a range of psychological and behavioral influences on the immune system so the quality of your sleep your diet your physical activity and your mood are just some examples so what we did in office study was to say well OK let's measure all of these things in people just before they're going to have their vaccination and see whether any of them or any combination of these factors actually is related to how well the vaccination works and much to our surprise what we found was those of everything that we looked at it was positive mood on the day that people were vaccinated that had the largest a fact how could this be it's a very good question so we didn't design that particular study to answer that question which is you know what is the mechanisms cause the fact but we can we can speculate as to a couple of things that could be going on so one of them could be that well is it just that people who have positive mood they people who engage in more healthy behaviors is it a correlation between those things and that's why their immune system works better in response the vaccination that could also be a kind of biological explanation also so we know not so much about positive mood but we know that people who experience negative mood they have changed in hormones like cortisol which communicate directly with the immune system so you can start to speculate then that people who have got high levels of positive mood may have lower levels of this hormone which may enable a vaccine to it better. So how will he take it from here then what next so the big trial that will be running later this year in time for the next lot of flu jobs people are getting at the end of the year aims to recruit $650.00 people in the community who would be having their vaccinations anyway so this is targeting older people and what we're going to do is we're going to ask people if they degree to be randomized into one of 3 groups one group will have that vaccination is normal nothing will happen to them a 2nd group will receive 15 minutes of let's call it positive mood a positive mood intervention but the content of that intervention is going to be fixed it's going to be determined by a space on some previous work that we've done around what we think older people enjoy but in the 3rd arm people get to choose that content from a limited menu but they will get some choice over it and our hypothesis is that both of the positive mood arms will perform better than the usual care but maybe we'll see the biggest effect in the group that are allowed to choose what they find amusing so you choose you know comedy Wow Wow incredible Now we know that doctors have been prescribing things like singing lessons they're swimming and things like that do you ever see a time when they might be prescribing. Of Comedy Well you know I mean the beauty of the work that we're doing if our hypothesis is supported is that here is an opportunity to take a medical treatment that works quite well but could work better and by doing something really simple that's not going to cost a lot of money if we can improve it by 5 attempts and that's a huge number of extra people who are going to be protected so I think yes we can see potentially in the future a situation where you don't just queue up to have your flu vaccine but maybe you'll get sit in the waiting room and watch something really funny because you get there and what a great sight a fantastic idea can be. It's a bit here a professor of health so I called him University of Nazim thank you very much indeed thank you. Grace and you only B.B.C. Radio has some breaking news for you at the Nottingham East M.P. Chris Leslie has resigned the labor whip and will now sit in Parliament along with 7 other former Labor M.P.'s in a new independent group of M.P.'s The news coming out in the last couple of minutes said the east M.P. Chris Leslie has resigned the labor whip and will now sit in Parliament along with 7 other former Labor M.P.'s in a new independent group bringing more on that story as the day unfolds here on B.B.C. Radio Nottingham. 22 minutes past. It's not. Sci fi. It's not a. Sci fi. CD with. Such. Tom Jones and it's not unusual on B.B.C. Radio now a customer who called a bank to apply for loans says she was told all vegans should be punched in the face the Bristol woman who doesn't want to be named went to NOT West for a loan to pay for a $400.00 pound nutrition diploma the application was rejected but after listening to a recording of the call not West offered to pay for the course she's been speaking to B.B.C. Reporter Fraley who joins us now good morning Freya good morning what happened during this phone call. So for the purposes of our coverage today we're calling the woman in question Valerie says she doesn't want to name her because she's really worried about the backlash after all of this Valerie is passionate bacon and she really wants to become a vacant nutrition consultant but she needs a bit of cash to pay for the course in order to become one so she called her bank Nat West. Ask for a loan she got through to an agent and she explained that she was an active begin and that's when things started to go wrong really Here's what she claims happened next we've always stopped her words to protect her identity and he proceeded to tell me that all the INS should be punched in the face I asked what he meant by that and he said it was in regards to chalk activism which is when activist draw pictures of animals and then write messages like friends not food in chalk on pavements he said weakens we're doing it near where he lived and vegans were forcing their police on to him normally when I'm doing outreach work in the community I'm prepared to be challenged on my beliefs but when you're calling up a really big organization like not West you just don't expect that kind of response for how did this customer react. Well after all of that the phone advisor eventually told Valerie that she couldn't actually have the loan because she was asking for too little she was instead offered a credit card or an extension to her overdraft but she refused both She told me that when she got off the phone she felt shaken upset and really insulted Valerie has since been too scared to even answer the phone to Nat West and she's instead asked them to contact her only via email text and letter Valerie says she's begun for an important reason and so she took the comment as a personal attack being the going is very very important to my family who made the decision to become the going after my daughter was taken to see a cancer specialist and that was really scary so when someone turns around and says they want to punch beacons in the face that's not just me they're targeting It's my children as well if we've been talking about my religion he wouldn't have made a comment like that so then she decided to complain she did and they launched an investigation 1st of all Nat West sent her a letter stating that our attempts to locate the phone call and listen to the exact conversation has been unsuccessful They did however say they accepted her version of events apologized and offered her 85 pounds worth of compensation soon after that she got an email from that West saying they'd actually found the recording and that the 1st and get the 1st investigation had been inadequate the man who wrote the letter from that Wesley said he found the recording really difficult to listen to and that the agent's attitude towards beginners and was totally unacceptable and also condemned How'd he inferred violence towards people he didn't counted locally also said the passion you have for a healthy lifestyle is really admirable It must be at times hard to believe in something which is often subjects' to negative press but then offered her an additional $100.00 pounds worth of compensation and offer to cover the $400.00 pound cost of the diploma course so the amount of compensation being offered here is now pretty hefty so was not was said. This story is attracting a lot of debate online this morning if you take a look on social media it pretty much is kicking off that West has come out to say it's really sorry and that disciplinary proceedings have commenced I've asked Simon SERP a gun who's head of telephony at Nat West exactly what that means it's incredibly distressing and it's very difficult to listen to this call what's clear here is that we've completely fallen short of the standards that we would expect all of our colleagues to adhere to and behavior and behavior with this individual is no longer in contact with customers or clients across any part of the bank I will make sure that that investigation is very quick in this Tara what I'd like to do is to apologize to the customer for the experience that we have clearly put it through because this isn't representative of the great service that we're performing across the organization is B.B.C. On the border an extra special brain teaser for you this Monday morning as well launch that for you in the next 10 minutes. Few ways you are nothing. To. Eat. Dog. All dogs all. Oh. Good. All the Chinos it from Fleetwood Mac. It's dreams. Whether B.B.C. Radio Nottingham looks to be a fair week yeah quite an exciting week shaping up actually talks of potentially break in February for temperatures looks like we could see up to 16 degrees Celsius at the highest in the East Midlands on Friday if things continue as they're sort of shaping up to be at the minute so yeah well above what it should be for this time of year in the mean time is feeling a bit cooler today temps is getting up to about 11 at the highest through this afternoon and there is a bit of a breeze around as well such as making it feel a little bit chilly and we can expect to see some rather dry conditions bit of sunshine here there that clouds always going to be around Sunshine be hazy at times probably going see the best of the sunshine through this afternoon actually just after lunchtime and as I mentioned temperatures will be a 11 so not too bad a day just the wrist perhaps to seeing the chow bit later on as we haven't see tonight but overnight it should be mostly dry quite clear but it will be chilly because of a clear sky so down to about 2 or 3 degrees Celsius so a cold start to things tomorrow morning quite sunny actually to start she's day that cloud will build up once again through the afternoon it's looking fairly overcast by it's more night temp just more a little bit lower so a cooler data come 9 degrees Celsius tomorrow and it's from then the temperatures begin to kick in the gates and they begin to increase sorry so from Wednesday on was this it is getting a little bit milder turning warm by the end of the week and it should be largely dry and bright actually plenty of sunshine expected through Thursday and Friday and potential for records to be broken it is yeah I mean the highest I think we got into February is just over 19 a half degrees or something like that in just under 20 degrees essentially a dinner for quite reached across the country is not tropical isn't it yeah well for February certainly Yeah but it doesn't like we'll probably get into the mid teens by the end of the week. Astley and running to the B.B.C. Radio now sing a.
