Radio Times politics reporter summary. Apprentices hard at work at the national training academy for right here in Northampton these guys employed by Siemens the train manufacturer a pleased very sidelines university to come here that this is all it. Would of course the law as. Long. As all paid for one of them proves in one of the best ways to get training while being paid on the job and learning about the industry is to do an apprenticeship opposed to uni and so it's a lot more practical as well during an apprenticeship being able to. At the same time I get a sense of independence and also the rally in sri Cept of a passion in Siemens has around $100.00 apprentices in its u.k. Rail division and even pressing them because it struck to get the stuff it needs so massive massive problems going to happen face bone organizations in the red industry and there's no quick short solution other than just now confound developing a skilled workforce of the future that's down Walker he runs the apprenticeship program here the government wants more training like this a talkative 600000 new apprentices a year in fact and how to get there it introduced a new apprenticeship Levy last April it means big companies like here at Siemens that have a wage bill of more than $3000000.00 pounds a year after pay Hoffer percent of bats in a levy but they can then get that amount back from the government if they spend it on apprenticeships since all that came in Siemens haven't increased the number of apprentices but Dan says the system is working now for Siemens this is something I've been doing for a long time anyway always had a big investment in the skills agenda so for us it's quite new We've we've seen as an opportunity that we're now looking at other ways occasion to pressure them into training and upscaling of a staff and said just new stuff coming into the organisation critics say this is affectively a new tax but down the road at Brock there was there's another positive story that the business i.t. Firm Rico charge boss Rebecca Wallace agrees the levy is having a positive impact because it was previously looking at a majority young people now because it's a print up to the whole of our workforce our numbers in terms of apprenticeships has at this point in time all my stubbled so I will miss 100 percent increase but that looking forward to that planning will just go on and on increasing and increasing summary reporting that I will talk more about this later in the program we told you a company in the county that helps business spend the levy and the lead person for apprenticeships at Northampton college. Northamptonshire weather b.b.c. Radio Northampton and it's Lizzy routinely with the following. Oh I bring you much nice day weather I mean honestly. And I think it went down several of my library. Anyway and let that let's stay for the states a lot more. In fact. But it is a chilly start. At the moment the winds are a lot lighter the coming in from the west rain at the moment. Is quite it is going to feel quite chilly rainy but there should be lots of sunshine around through the morning sunny spells into the afternoon there will be some showers but there the focus of the north I'm not going to cross but I do think it's unlikely basically. With some sunshine but high 74 degrees that quite cold I mean night tonight it's a bit of a mixture a I think we are going to say. Temperatures dip to get a Touch of Frost once again into tomorrow morning but then tomorrow we are probably going to see some rain and that's that's going to creep in from the southwest and some of the rain could have a little bit of snow in it perhaps just for a time portends back to a little bit of rain possibly some sleet and snow tomorrow morning that will clear away quite quickly and it should be much drier but it is going to feel cold all day tomorrow again. Maybe brightening up by the time it gets the end of the day is the same thing again on Sunday it's a different feature but. I think through the morning a little bit of snow on the leading edge before it turns back to right and it will just rain Sunday sorry about that but it will. By the time we get into next week we're up to around 9 or 10 degrees Celsius the sun will rise today and it was at least one of 1627 that's the forecast. Elaine. Let me. Elaborate say are liberal. Radio Northampton. 23 minutes past 6 has been a major major breakthrough in cancer research at least it seems that has exciting news from the United States of America today on detecting cancer early scientists are one step closer to using a universal blood test to detect several cancers very early on and way before any symptoms show it works in most cases and it isn't expensive because the good news is that bit of early detection that I've mentioned because they always say don't they the sooner it's caught the earlier it's caught the more likely there is something can be done about it let's get more details on this research on this breakthrough that's what it is from reporter Adam Kirtley So it's a blood test of them is it it is as simple as that yes it's a blood test what they did was they took a $1005.00 patients who they knew that they already had cancer it had been detected but very early on and they did a blood test and they looked at me Tayshaun is in the d.n.a. And proteins that humans make in the bloodstream they just do and they managed to detect these cancers Now Ok the officials doing it knew that the patients at cancers but the way they did the test was that the people doing the test as it were Didn't they were blind. The fact that the people overseeing it knew that the people actually carrying out the blood tests and doing the work didn't know and it worked in 70 percent of cases it worked in 8 cancers they're quite common ones over liver stomach pancreas esophagus colon lung and breast and the beauty of this is the earlier of course you get a detection the earlier you can start treatment in the more successful it is and moreover in all of these cases the cancer hadn't yet started to spread and that's really important if you can grab a tumor and a new kid as it were before it had any effect on the rest of the body then obviously you don't get those complications because a lot of problems with cancer is something called mess to mess to sizing I think it met Mr sizing as an idea which is where it spreads you can nip it in about before it spreads of course that's marvelous and the sense is that he sounds as a pretty accurate test well they did it in these 8 cancers and the average was around 70 percent of accuracy of the cancers the test found 70 percent of the cancers was way more in some cancers but what's also interesting Stuart is that where they detected the council in 83 percent of cases they could detect and locate where in the body the cancer was and that's also good in terms of speed because you know where to go you know if you going to take a chimera at the physicians know where it is so they detect early they then presumably x. Ray they go in they get it out early what the hope is though that in all cases and this isn't yet there so we're way off in all cases if they could just do make this a routine blood test before you know you and I would just go into Addington surgery or whatever and have a blood test once a year if they could do that they could detect it before even symptoms of shown as you suggested in your introduction and therefore you can just use it a bit like a sort of blood test mammogram if you like that you're detecting things before they even manifesting themselves which is amazing the thing when they say yes it's really not they are not absolutely early days but the big. Question is when we do get we'll be able to afford it would it be one of those that says we haven't got the money that the great question and it's a good aunt's good news on so the answer is yes it can afford it because they reckon that the test will cost around $36370.00 quid now you could say force of quite a lot for a blood test but think about it at this quality of life saving lives usually And it just is about the cheap compared to not detecting cancer really and all the complications and expense of trying to treat somebody once the cancer has developed so actually screening dealing curing is way way cheaper than not screening not detecting early enough and then having to pick up the pieces medically so yes is the answer but when I don't want people to get overly optimistic were his trials they're not there yet there's a lot of eyes to cross the dice to Dalton T.'s to cross before it goes anywhere near being a routine test Adam thank you exciting news though from the United States thank you America. right. But. It's his birthday today 67 that's why we played Ventura Highway from America what happened to the lady to misquote Charlotte Bronte a listener America going to play spot the star. It will be exactly a year tomorrow since Donald Trump was sworn in as the 45th president of the United States of America supporters say his president so far has been a great success story as he tries to make America great again he's pushed through an historic tax cut and presided over a booming economy critics describe him as an embarrassment they say he's imitated many of America's or irritated rather many of America's allies abroad inflamed racial tensions at home Mr Trump insists and I quote that he is a very stable genius and quote here's a little reminder of the 1st 12 months of the Trump presidency. You know. The press has become so dishonest The news is fake because so much of the news is fake Where are you from b.b.c. Isn't the. Good life. Better in court out there sweat and tears. For this country for so long and it's time for the record I can only say this there was absolutely no collusion it's a Democrat hoax that was brought up as an excuse for losing an election we're working to give the American people a giant tax cut for Christmas No one has shown more contempt for other nations and for the well being of their own people then the depraved regime in North Korea rocket man is on a suicide mission for himself the House and Senate are now negotiating the final bill and I cannot wait to sign his giant tax cuts you look at some of his past books he did a book on Rupert Murdoch it was a terrible exposé and it was false so much of it was false I consider it a work of fiction. So he does he's got the power and tomorrow 12 months on the Trump presidency in about a half an hour or so b.b.c. Reporter Emily live from Pennsylvania to find out what's planned for tomorrow really we had anniversary for something to celebrate or maybe something that the Americans would rather just gloss over and forget is even happening by the way a friend of mine passed away the other day broadcast in this country called Ed a Didn't lovely man and I've seen some of his past interviews that people have been replaying and remembering and he interviewed lots and lots of people presidents prime ministers interviewed President Clinton interviewed loads of prominence including Margaret Thatcher and what fascinated me listening back to the interview with with Margaret Thatcher was he asked her what she did Cheve and she just stopped short of saying we've made Britain great again Bill Clinton said we're going to make America great again so it's not unique that slogan for President Trump but it's certainly something he keeps on reminding us that he's there to do 30 minutes to 7. The b.b.c. Radio noise.
