The a pua . That the a through a Radio no September much like you were listening to b.b.c. Radio but some die in the Stephen bomb threat I'm going to tell you about tonight kids thanks i Pennypacker is I right how it disabled rights activist I am about holdouts and I could probably find he's bringing her acclaimed show to Dragon holy nurses Friday talking about her life and I disabled person in the creative office and a rule open and honest life that has a national right to a penny joins me on the phone now you write that. Let me live from how you stings is that right if you know how you think I mean I think. Raising that somehow is also looking. So ladies please go away all the sniveling Yeah please go see it feel free. I'm doing this in my mittens Oh yeah that's nice Yes Ok how do you have a phone in your mittens can you do that. Yes I'm being very pro you have got me headphones so I'm not all comfortable and I'm looking at what we. Got to set up my office. Doing Ok so are you a punk would you say Penny. Very much a punk Hall I mean I'm getting on a bit now but. I am a regional punk and I really feel the draw is that culture of punk mentally once you've. Tasted it the sense of rebellion of yourself. Will never leave me so yeah it's more than a music genres and it's a way of life. Yet so I think that can get forgotten because that's the fashion and all that we know in aggressive music which you have to love and 11 important thing on that is that we need to music on their own. And I always like to push that with the likes of c.c.c. Too and told the story. He sang with the x. Ray specs and a lot of those women were very much this is going to look like this. And that was very much inspirational to me yeah and especially with the y. . Explored that rock while on stage it was such a visceral one form violent physical way of just getting the message across it was just wonderfully emphatic with Nate back in the die when punk was absolutely huge and moving through the decades Well yeah I still think it's a great influence on punk in music now and so I threw my 50 so I think Oh God I know. But that's so that's quite you know. Amusing but also. It makes me happy and I will say as well it was very punk. I developed the idea of being a poet. Oh I was very tight can with people like. Cooper crop. Who we say is the grand that the British spoken the mix. In my collection come home alive my debut poetry collection I've got a poem to educate it's John Cooper Clarke based on his poem evidently ticking sound I probably saw when I read any. More to see how does it really I live Yeah so this is why the poetry can be punk in itself that you can write a punk piece of poetry. Yeah and I think that if you look at pirates now that we know parties that are real sort of research and through the idea or spoken word one spare ribs always worth 5 words so I'm glad to come back to that but I think punk influence the anger and the rebellion. It was very much to be done Lloyd and we now have amazing poets. To use or you know much more well known people like a pen placed with the. Who's an award winning poet and writer I can hear her rebellion all the way back to. My own. I may not you know I'm a writer that's why 1st and foremost love I mean or poetry is always been. And I get asked a lot by beginners you know what how do you start what you do not I think one thing is to say learn your craft so I can I can give you an ode or so now I know all those classical forms but it's good to know them because then you can break the will definitely yeah that's a really good message you know about how to learn and experience your craft through poetry Tell me about your show that we can see a drunken hole this Friday that naked punk What do you explore in the shower. Not explodes prove our work. A little bit more childhood and how I had a lot of expectations. Philip very young I cut ringing it was the anniversary this year of labor Brigade the moon landing at the beginning of my show and how that made me feel is you know a senior male a woman. Growing up. To realize there are a hell of a lot of barriers for women and then you add in disability there was no expectation so and wrestle that through poems and readings from the memoir and they will pay. Very many brights where you see it from my 9092 spy Rusco. On the sweep of my hand yet I was off and I saw it all Sco is very rare so I need that on so I know it was and the c.b.c. So I hope people will enjoy the memoir because there's a lot about the North the independence of music say no I drifted into truth I knew people if not. I had condos links to all sorts of people and then around that there was issues like. I used to write to Morrissey Xa Smith and. He wrote back he gave me a birthday present. I know he's a bit moment by now but. I did love that young man who spoke calling for me and he is the reason I'm still writing because I was quite depressed and struggling in and all banks you go and he wrote something and said you have a beautiful gift. It's. You know I don't give it up type thing and I never did and I was friends with broken wire. With. Really. All kinds of things so I think I bring that into the show there will be a q. And I and I want to challenge people to find the questions that my shock Yeah that's a big that's a big challenge let me tell you. Tell me about your life as a disability rights activist you explore some of this in your poetry and a bit in the show was while the house your life been like that well I've always felt. In some ways activism isn't the whole of my writing. Like you just come to see the show from a to put it into context but I just feel disabled people in creative sector are still. A long way behind if you are now because we have to get over so much cliché in stereotyping it's changing very very slowly but when you've got it against a backdrop of. A lot of attacks on disabled people an increase in hate crimes aboard parole you're not you know even able to get to a kind of stop position as a creative if you have to deal with all that rubbish so that's always been a thing for maid to fight for equality and I'm very much focused on equality for disabled people it's kind of my life's hard you know and my Yeah and I put a lot of that in for my fiction I did say always consider the effect of is the one I might be reading a bit on Freud like I did a book called The so I s. Which is a collection of short stories and I call it disability erotica. So I will be reading a bit from that very still available as an e-book to go is reborn a fine Now I wrote that book in 2003 even now there's to brew around disabled people have relationships and. You know we just do the same things everybody else it's more difficult sometimes mostly to to to. Yeah you know draw people and yeah do things do you think people see. Beyond the wheelchair beyond the a disability enough nowadays do you think they don't they don't see is inclusive for that simple saying I'm aware changes so I'm happy it's a wheelchair user it's part of my identity but it doesn't define me completely Yeah I'm you know I mean I'm a girlfriend I'm a sister I'm bloody annoying sometimes. I'm a happy person I'm a committed person go I'm all these things sometimes like in a really bad mood but that's just humanity and I'm really keen. Remind people for my work for a story in particular that we are part of in quote normality there is no society there that doesn't have disabled people so let's get on with creating the color remove barriers ensure right. National were on the right way in or it certainly we remembered an event a few months ago in the Norris forum the visibility in broadcasting from at the moment to big building a community hub a lot of the times and hosted a disability pride so you know you've got prods the l g p Q c plus communities but you've also got a disability Pod that happened a few months ago and that was really a huge events that happened in the fine city yet there they are popping up all over which is really great but also provides a one reason I'm there in the lucky trackin hole is the disability strip which runs from the 22nd of November to the 22nd. And there will be a lot going on all over the place a base surprised if they're not celebrate. Community in Norwich and I will say hello everybody remembering disability stream of u.k. History. And that is that was set up because we need to bring back an awareness of our history for ourselves and not. Let those countless disabled people funny mistreats able people that I'm very passionate their stories are told and again not just wheelchair users we could say I say we had no king I've also got Frida Kahlo you've got new was hearing impaired it just goes on and on and on and there they're the ones we know we need more and I'll be writing about the most current. Pennypacker than I could punk you are. Steen Action Center for writing a dragon whole Friday the 22nd of November you can look at the International Center for writing. Sometimes on the radio it's easy to overlook all of the. Wild every single tax. My next guest is hoping to change that. We've got the founder and director of the Museum of human kindness and aspects of a ship celebrating real life stories of decency and reminding us all that the world is a good place to be. And show some love to you can. You know fine thank you please make you thank you for having me and I thank you so much for coming in and you know what you'll do in this project it sounds really call the Museum of human kindness the answer assaults Why do we need a bit of kindness in our lives and do you think I'm in oh I think kindness can we always need kindness any time in our lives I think particularly maybe more recently the project came about when around 4 or 5 years ago we started to shift where we started to notice the shift in a lot of dialogue in media and I guess this relates to the referendum vote in the campaign around that u.s. Presidential campaign where the tone from respect to you know kindness a lot of differing opinions out there isn't there I think so became more polarizing became a bit more aggressive and it was harder to hear but then at the same time we stepped out of our you know Radio Zone or t.v. Zone and into our normal lives everyday life we started to notice that well you know of course friends and family but also a lot of strangers you know there's a lot of acts of kindness around us and we thought well why not create a space to be able to celebrate that do you think there's enough good news on the news at the moment. I think there's an active effort to try to balance the tone a lot whether it's good news or people trying to claw back a little bit in the way we express our opinions and I think that's important I feel like if you know people from from the news in the media say wants you to click on their thing if they want you to read death saying they've got to come up with some dramatic headline news something like we're all doing and then they go. Read it whereas if there's something nice and maybe we're not so people don't want to read that kind of thing. But I think one of the nice things from so this project is really about asking people to donate stories of their experience of receiving kindness from complete strangers and we bringing artists to great visual responses about them the stories that they particularly liked and when we read those stories it's really interesting that they can be very small acts of kindness you know from just helping somebody who had fallen in the street and just might be feeling a little bit you know Barrus than hurt and so forth to grand gestures we had one lady come and said well complete stranger went to the pharmacy and realized that her daughter she was a he was a perfect match for her daughter who was suffering from kidney failure and you decided to donate his kidney right there and then I went through the whole process and said you know what before surgeries that I'm so scared you know they both are going to die he decided you know this is what I'm going to do and I'm doing it and so you know could be quite a range it's kind of like us you know we were different people and kindness can take different forms locally think there was a good will hey we none on chin the surrounding our emotional foot Yeah definitely definitely one of the ideas of doing it and really situating it Norrish was that you know your city's slogan is north is a fine city we thought well actually it's quite a kind City as well so let's work on building something here 1st and so we got all our artists who are based in order to work with us or in Norfolk. And then I think yeah it's it's funny that a lot of stories also came from north area as well so there was a lot of connection at the exhibition we had one of the story donors and the artist meet for the 1st time and you know that created a nice sort. Full circle with well can you give me some examples of some stories that you found for the sex Bishan I really believe you will why you just saw it from the some of the stories you've already said. There's a lot and they're all on our website so if anybody would like that kind of warm heartedness they're all there but one I think the recent one that we received was about Wolverhampton wonders and there was this is a young lady who didn't have a car relying on public transport one night she got caught out didn't well took a bus but only went half way and it was that was the end of the buses journey as she was stuck in the middle of nowhere asked a policewoman who was walking by and thought that she would help but actually she said your problem and what why so she's left in the middle of the night but then 10 lads came up to her is just really really intimidated thinking oh my God you know this is the worst thing that can ever happen a way they said Miss We heard about your story to the police and this you know we rallied up all our change and this is all we've got but maybe you can get a cab and gave them all their pocket change that the 10 boys put together and she said this is the time before social media and this and that so we didn't exchange anything but you know she she remembers that years and years later so you know it's really interesting how the act isn't a very short term one but it can be and somebody's life time as their memory so nice it's so nice and. There's this thing I think when you think you can start to flee think about doing something contra someone it's another thing to actually do it isn't there you've got to be almost a bit brave to carry out an act of Congress sometimes yeah yeah definitely I think one of the reasons why we focused on receiving acts of kindness because there's so many people who may. Thing job you know sort of helping us become more kind person but one of the aspect was Ok well how do we take that step forward you know we know what to do possibly but how do we become braver and that's where we thought well let's focus on receiving kindness because that's an element of surprise you have no control you're in a horrible situation and somebody you know does something that you kind of don't expect and when that happens that I think the sense of appreciation is greater and sense of awareness towards you know another person in a similar predicament become more heightened So hopefully this focus on receiving kindness is just as important. As knowing how to be kind and take that step and so it does seem to push people to sort of thing actually doesn't have to be the Superman path but you know I could do it and it could be free could be lovely Yeah I get the whole thing with receiving kindness as well because that also takes some effort because I think it's a very British thing to say you know you're all right thank you thank you now but it's you know it's sometimes it's just the best thing is to accept that Qantas right I think so yeah yeah and I think you know. There's a sense that you know you are being kind by accepting generosity from where there is you know you are giving people the chance to return a karma from elsewhere so there is this flow to our behavior our relationships and that paying it forward or however that flow might be it could be that you know it's from person a to be to see you know it just seems to have this ripple effect Yeah and you feel good when you do an act of kindness as well so if you accept it and the other person feels good as well this is an art exhibition so you've come up with various creative ways to a sample of these stories I'm looking at an article here about the art exhibition and there's a picture of a gold tooth with a very. His picture is around it can you describe what that means so that one relates to a story of a dentist monk who gave one of the visitors who broke his tooth from eating a bread piece of bread and it was a pretty invasive operation but he gave him a whole complete crown but decided you know he wasn't going to take a penny for it and sort of jokingly said I you know even even if I did charge or you would be able to pay for it and the recipient $37.00 how you probably write it was just this kind of humorous approach to a very painful experience physically and I just I really like that and so that tooth is actually something I made but I wanted to make this giant tooth to represent Mt Afros as the place where it's a male only a sacred site and women aren't allowed to go there so I wanted to create something where almost that you know it would be for boding But then and then start taking Byzantine art. I think I think visual representations of lots of gold in very rigid postures but then make those images quite comical as and friendly as possible as you found in the story there's also this picture I'm just going to change my switch switch on the screen here can you see that what you've got some 5 things that are different colors and then there's some like most large of hanging blue threads surrounding you will flash so this is our story sharing umbrella. And I'm Japanese American in Japan traditionally when you get caught out by a rain the nice thing to do the kind thing to do was to offer somebody a lift under your umbrella. So we thought they will take this concept but essentially it is an audio element and we wanted to make the exhibition is excessive force possible and one is that you know because their story based It's a lot of text to go through but if you're coming maybe with a young child then you know reading all the stories could be a little bit challenging especially when there are other people around so we thought well create an audio element where they could go and they could choose a story there's an i Pod there with all the stories single files and they can listen to that together on a little phone receiver and so the blue rain tassels it's visual and it makes it look fun and pop but at the same time once you're in it you do feel a sense of privacy a sense of closeness so you can also share your story through audio of sense of being protected from the rain as well the night out here tend to look at it this exhibition is running till the 23rd of November which I think is this weekend but has it been going on for quite a bit will see the reaction been like yeah reckon I really positive so we're halfway through the pop up exhibition so do please come in next this coming week. And we had visitors from a range of age group but we also have a photo booth where we're trying to map out what people think you know describe a word that means kind. As to you we sort of thought lot of children would like to use it or young people would like to use it in fact we're looking at the pictures of the people and it's all age range you know having fun. So yeah definitely it's a very interactive exhibition as well as a very visual and emotional i.q. Mission Yeah it's definitely really good to concentrate on little things a little lots of calmness in a world of news that as we say is really big because. Yes So the museum of human kindness and the answer it's foundation that's by far bridge straight nor It's going on until November the 28th that as well as more of the thank you so much for joining us any plans for the future just before you go yeah so the immediate plan is that we'll have lots of workshops from the 23rd to do please come with family friendly we do have discussions about another pop up exhibition in Great Yarmouth in May So hopefully come back and tell you more about that when the time gets closer definitely thank you so much because Thank you thank you thank.
