It came right back to me she wrote a book. The song. No. No such. Both sides of the song. This time I'm going to take an honest. But. You see. Justin daily across the eastern counties on a Saturday night we try and keep things light of course but we can't ignore what's been happening in Westminster today a m pages have decided to make it up on the weekends the least I thing I can do is talk about it but if I'm going to be honest with you I'm confused I came into expecting a result either way on whether we are leaving on October 31st or not but it seems we don't have that more than 3 years ago after the original vote what is going on all political reports and Holmes is with me in the studio and a good evening should we try to make sense of this yeah well just in your right to be confused as that's what we were originally expecting to get a result today today was billed to Super Saturday the 1st time M.P.'s of south on a Saturday since 1902 on the agenda was that key vote on whether M.P.'s were going to back the bricks and deal with the prime minister Boris Johnson has got or not we were expecting tension on a very close call with Boris desperately trying to reach the magic figure of 320 votes who would get his deal over the line so why didn't that happen today in layman's terms. It's like. A simple well it's largely down to an m.p. Coats all of a let when he's been an m.p. In Dorset since 1997 he was in the Conservative party till September of this year when he was one of the 21. Tories that voted against the government on a bricks ballot he put forward an amendment on Friday to the bill which was discussed today which means M.P.'s can't vote on the breaks that agreement until all of the legal stuff is in place behind it his critics have accused him of doing this just to try to lay bricks even further but his supporters see this amendment as a way to event is leaving without a deal which a lot of people are worried we will do it just after 230 this afternoon after more than 5 hours of debate in the Houses of Parliament and P's voted on whether to accept this amendment or not and Boris lost the vote by 322 votes to 306 even though only 11 of our 86 M.P.'s in the east with a vote voted for the amendment that's mainly because the vast majority in a barren piece in the east are people who could vote are conservatives so they voted against the amendment to try and support their leader Boris Johnson because of that though just in it was decided there was no point in pressing on with the main vote on his deal for now Rog So exactly where does that leave us now then well as we've been hearing the same thing and it is an ever evolving story as we know but as far as Boris Johnson is concerned he seems to pressing on with his plan for us to BRICs it on October 31st despite losing the vote he has to write a letter to the e.u. By 11 pm this evening to request an extension he said he's not daunted or dismayed by this defeat but we have heard I think in a news bulletin just now that he has agreed to send that letter tonight he's also written a letter to M.P.'s he'll hear a bit more about when we talk to a couple of them in a minute but right after the vote he told M.P.'s he wouldn't negotiate at the late with the e.u. And that the law doesn't compel him to do so Mr Johnson a said he'll bring in legislation on Monday to try and move forward the deal he struck with Brussels this week which means we could see another vote on the deal on Monday if the common speaker and Buckingham m.p. John Bercow allows that So that's that's sort of where we are right now just then later on we will have to play some Barry White music under our conversation to try and make this personal question to you don't you are a political reporter this is been going on now for over 3 years you must be. Bored of this now you must pay I think us political reporters we love it you know we are you know even there just by our existence 3 years I think it's all good fun to be honest I'm looking forward to in general election of all those things well yes you know one man who was there today was the independent m.p. For ne Bedfordshire Alister but so likes all of the let when he lost the Tory weapon September that breaks it vote but today he voted against the let When Amendment Good evening. I just didn't and they did hear from you could see it for me thanks for coming on horses short notice so look what was it like in Westminster I What was the atmosphere like down there it was. It was very special I mean colleagues knew there were there was something quite extraordinary We had met on Saturday all 37 years there was an air of expectation because we knew there would be a vote of some sort but most of the day it was a question of how many people would support out of the Letterman's amendment would it get through if it did what the consequences would be at the moment I mean and the right sort of people who are very interested in all their professional take it back and I think as you said right at the beginning of the public comments perseverating wondering where we go next what Boris Johnson still thinks that he can get Bracks over the line by October 31st realistically can he still do that. He can. Count it's a bit of an ask. I think the conditions are this he now has a an agreement with the 2nd agreement the us made with United Kingdom after promise the maze withdrawal agreement he's got obviously more support for this from the Conservative Party because the all sections of agreed to support it he has lost the support of the day you say however but there are some Labor M.P.'s who are very worried that there may be no deal at all they represent areas that they leave and so they probably want to get the line as well so providing he can get a vote before Parliament he might well have a chance of securing the deal and then if this parliament really does not want no deal it will have something to vote for to prevent no deal the timescale will be very tight it's not impossible if you gave it more time it would have more scrutiny but quite frankly to be honest it would face the same challenges even if there was a year for further debate to be honest just listing Yes. And up just a yes or no for let you go and this is a personal view I mean you mention a few things that do you think that this will be done before October the 35 is just a personal view from you yes or no do you think he will get on. I give it a qualified Yes Ok thank you very much he's confident listening to all of this is Dominic Grieve who is the independent m.p. For back and filled and voted for the left when Amendment Dominic raving to you Donna Good evening. We Center lost and couldn't get back on the line for so well I'm here Dominic Kerio I'm fine thank you very much lovely listen thanks for joining us on the price when I was a very busy time for you probably got loads of paper pulling your different directions even now this this layout so why did you vote for the left when a member and today place because it was absolutely essential in view of the Prime Minister's behavior over threatening and no deal Breck's it to make sure that the no deal breaks it couldn't happen as a result of the very short time that now exists between now and the 31st of October in which to complete the breakfast the Boris Johnson says he wants and which in my view he's not very likely to get can you understand why people listening to this will feel incredibly frustrated about this new July we're talking about tonight yes I think people will feel very frustrated I think members of parliament feel very frustrated about the entire process and people looking at the 3 years of the past since the 2016 referendum are going to feel very frustrated as well the basic problem however is that there is no deal or 'd agreement formula for leaving the e.u. Which when looked at by M.P.'s doesn't have really serious flaws and it's not just flawless but really serious risks for our country including its break up so the break up of the United Kingdom by losing both Northern Ireland and Scotland and looking ahead economic consequences particularly with this most recent deal because far from resolving breaks it the deal by 14 months of transition what I think Jacob Reese mom called vassalage were subordinate to the e.u. But at the end of that if we're going to get beyond it we need a free trade agreement and having it what the prime minister had to say about his ambitions for a tree Free Trade Agreement and looked at the text of his. Do you all I think he's most are likely to get it but tell me when are you going to get going so everybody I think is bending transition but really we're going to get a deal that suits everybody because you've got to reason mazed tell you that Boris Johnson still you know happy with either we never got to get a great deal because it sends out the wrong message to other nations that they might be next to leave doesn't it but you know that's absolutely right there is no good deal to be had and this is the problem so if there's no if there's no good deal to be had you know how is this going to be solved but my view is that the only way it's going to be solved it by offering the choices to the British electorate and they're going to have to make up their mind about it they indicated they wanted to leave in 2016 I don't understand that the truth is that members of Parliament do have a responsibility to try to ensure good government for their constituents and for the country generally cannot find a formula for leaving the e.u. Which doesn't have such a. In their collective opinion of down sides that they're willing to come together and deliberate the telling because all alone you can't be serious about going back to the British public again and asking them once again can you domain that surely Yes I do mean that because otherwise I think we're going to continue going around in circles possible that the prime minister may get this deal across the line. That what Alice the person who's a good friend and colleague said may prove to be correct but seeing for example that the Democratic Unionists do you pay have now come out so strongly against this proposal for reasons I have to say the top perfectly understandable when viewed from the point of view of Northern Ireland and their own view about dollars place in the United Kingdom I think that the prime minister is going to find it very hard to do this now he may be able to do it but he's got to carry not only a motion ultimately but also a complex piece of constitutional legislation through Parliament and I'm not certain he's in the position to do this any more than Theresa May was in the position to take a deal through which is why we've got to try to find an alternative now one alternative which perfectly reasonable democratic one is to say Parliament should dissolve itself we should have a general election we should elect new M.P.'s new parties in parliament if necessary but trouble is I actually think that if we do that we will may well end up with a hung parliament along exactly the lines we thought at the moment because ultimately Parliament is Parliament's divisions are a reflection of the divisions that exist in the country at large the alternative is to go back and ask put to the people vote choice of a wall choices and then see if they they say they want to leave with Boris Johnson still we can leave 48 hours later but what happens is this goes back out to the public and I say we want to remind in the a you them wall. They will be asking for another vote if people want to have another referendum they can Champaign for one for that matter I'm not sure parliament's going to hold another referendum any time I mean riots in the streets I think if that happened because we're going against democracy Well I don't see that it's going against democracy if a 2nd referendum has a majority saying they wish to remain in need to have a referendum there is a majority of people in this country the British people have said we want to leave and that's what they have said so I understand that they said that 3 just over 3 years ago Yeah and that's quite as well is it not done I have no idea what the opinion of the British people is today on this subject. Because 3 years ago you were told they want to leave the why is now relevant it's got no relevance whatsoever but I think it has plenty of relevance if you'll excuse me. The relevance is that as a member of parliament and I think a majority of members of parliament are unable in the discharge of our duties to find a formula for delivering this which we don't think will cause our country untold damage if people want to leave then let them confirm it. Can I ask you just just just a final question so obviously this is and again to come back to that majority vote this is what the majority of paper in this country voted for you have tried to block this the whole way long do you feel guilty for that so I don't feel guilty because I haven't tried to block it the whole way along because I want to happen. Is Well it's absolutely true that I think leaving the e.u. Is probably the single biggest mistake was made in our modern people time here and your insights it's your opinion but you try to block a while and I haven't tried to block it the whole way along you're quite mistaken about that so how do you so we see today in London I believe you were talking to people today that wanted a 2nd referendum and you are with those people absolutely and they're entitled to ask for a 2nd referendum it's democracy. Is it democracy how can it be democracy which is democracy we all know that we have a lovely warm title to change their minds constantly That's how democracies work the difficulty we have at the moments is that having had a referendum we transformed that into a series of tablets of stone and insisted it's got to be worshiped at all times and all I can say to you is that I as a member of parliament are doing it just applies to me and not willing to take this country out of the e.u. On terms which in my assessment having taken an oath of office when I become an m.p. To do my best to discharge my responsibilities in the national interest I think will have catastrophic consequences for my country if people want that then we must indeed do it but we should go back and we should ask them to make this is my final point to appreciate you coming on the program tonight thank you very much do you think Boris is going to get this done Boris Johnson by the 31st of October but yes on that no I don't think he's going to get it done it could have been just to explain why even if parliament by a majority wanted to get this through unless he intends to short circuit the way in which a constitutional bill is debated and carried through the House of Commons and the House of Lords where he doesn't control the order paper on the way they carry out their business the idea that such a major piece of legislation with such importance to our country can be done in 10 ordinary days and probably about. 6 working days is completely ridiculous and if you hadn't gotten yourself into this silly mess in the 1st place or been we wouldn't have had the problems we had today anyway Terminix thank you for coming and I appreciate your time thank you very much they get on a grave who is the independent and paperback and failed and voted for the left when Amendment and the I think it's going to be one of those shows tonight my friend. Going off the long run it might get. Where does this go so you're going to stick around and we should talk to you after 10 o'clock by the way I know I sees requests from you tonight or it's all about my listeners like pick the music not you I prefer the ninety's anyway but I forget that it was your favorite band of all time and I could really yes 2nd favorite band but I could. Paint I could light is probably the best gig you've ever been to things up the best gig there are political reporter has been so I could load his resume 5 times have you we had somebody on the show last week or the week before who got 50 John Barrowman tattoos Wiles's 50 and there was somebody on a few weeks ago that sing I've forgotten the name of the act now but they'd sing the same act about 75 times I think the next good then keep going back to early I mean people could listen to you on as I know that's very very true but I want to thank you and they also come from and a bit later on this is b.b.c. Local writer look the phone lines are open if you want to talk about that anything else we're talking about tonight you need a number for your b.b.c. Local radio station which is coming out right now. 08038973. Let's play some music this is genius mama used to say Morris says they are just totally Arab. Democracy Ryan wrote for they didn't write. He says We just need to move on that something's gotta And I was expecting. Something to happen nothing really. 100 years old who is a. Long way. To . Go and. Going to. The a. Club . Thank you. Alex. Cohen. Going to. Go a. Long . Thank you. Thanks. To. You share that view. However you want to talk about right so we're not going to go to some great things to come. To you in just a moment we talk to a man who is 100 years old and he is still teaching a ballet this man is absolutely brilliant you will love him 930 markets on the law market anything good even more legitimate sites or not. But I like a quick as possible within about a break say on just with regards to the last gentleman is only a month or so you know I think you know completely wrong when he sang that we should put it back to the public and we should have another referendum Why do you think he's wrong. Because I think they're scared scared of what's going to happen to the country my viewers are voting to laze and I think things will get bad for a few years but then slowly it will improve is what we're hearing you say that he's scared and he pretty much did say that and he's scared about the future he believes this is the wrong deal for our country and it will have very negative effects. The view is if you start a new job you're scared until you actually get used to make people and then things no memories or nothing this is slightly more important somebody starting a new job or you understand that but I still think it's going to be the best thing since sliced bread because we were last to listen and be directed by the group of countries that do a lot of. You know tell us what we need to do in the way we need to do it and I think a lot more independents and a lot of issues I mean how frustrated are you Mark because you see cyphers had to leave and 3 years on we're still talking about this how frustrated are you. On very frustrated because all I ever hear is we should have another referendum I like and like you just said. It mocks democracy the majority voted to leave and I was a free years on my still you know we had to raise a my nothing got sorted and it just seems a lot majority and pays. Just one of every single thing against them to stop and get in the Deal or No Deal Well listen Mark I appreciate your time call Thank you very much for talk to Carol in a 2nd about something completely different townies in Ipswich is 1st of all White House in a rather than what would you like to size or close if I would have allowed a referendum of a as a local rather because we're already voted why vote for something twice what with all the evil for all the leisure time for years ago no. Reign of Bush just sounds trite but like linger on and on and strictly fed up with it all in the very same way and so with another referendum also on what was for the time what she might be asking sound a weird why did you vote for you. Even. This just say there was another referendum would you vote again herbals already vote with the use of force or something the world 1st place of it was democracy I mean look it's highly unlikely and a lot of people talk about it but it is highly unlikely but I think I can hear tonight again a bit like our previous phone call that your somebody the most is 4 years ago you voted to leave the a you were still talking about it and you paid off on years you're all you hear when you get. It all out and I just hear over the town so I wrote where I finished gone done. Well there we should it time but well 320 something old something every fights where he is a guy I mean well you know we need another referendum we don't need another referendum we vote we could tell you it was. It was. Democratically voted for. People voted to tell you it was sort of. Telling us what we should be know Ok Chani I appreciate the phone calls thank you very much as I say if you want to talk about that or anything else that we're talking about on the show tonight feel free to pick up the phone and give me a call when one of the shows where we say in this hour we're going to talk about that in that we're going to talk about that it is anything goes Carroll was in bed for good evening Carol I know you're right it is the lovely Caroline paid for it now Carol it says here on my screen you've just had a little operation how you feeling Carol you know I haven't thank you and I suppose I suppose the thing that you really want to hear on your radio tonight after recovering from an operation was us talking about bricks. But well I went to my cousin's funeral yesterday and there's more to come on that later on but there was a listener there and I miss Carol as well and she is from the region and she came up to me she went you play you play Crystal are on your show lift the ban. Now let me just explain this why we have this band of course about because. Carolyn Bradford finds out for Krista ever single wake and we said we're only going to play songs on the show if Krista agrees to make May I do an interview with him wearing a red dress and we don't see the lady I'm right so what happened was. We put that request in 2 years ago we were told to email back this year I emailed last week I've been told to email again next year so that I think Carol Christine has a lifetime ban from the show for good but it's a word so I was a bit maybe not you know him I couldn't take it so it's not him. It's not him. And what they're saying is once again I was on top does knowing something is apparently needs to be focused. Well tell you on Monday words I want to know what you say to go back and smile Riteish and I'm going to miss same I could play together. How do you. Don't listen to my pulse abandon you know. This is I'm trying to honk a train what you can do when you can't see course tomorrow Monday you can talk to me self and say by the white talk to that daily blog that award winning writer Shona sassing not they want to talk to you because until you talk to them you are banned on the program so you can make a difference for the show you can do it yourself Well no they will surround the stone site on said tell me and not but just now it's it does Lady in red wall round done now I've been down with a kid so many hunks maze quarantines when he hugs you just whisper anything to talk to that painting Oh well he was a local right here otherwise you're banned before I let you go in 10 seconds can I get your views on bricks and what's going on at the moment how do you think about a camp set up it's not but I tell you something the saying is say you should just cited it was done it was Democrats who went the Whichever way to go nude been some paper. Come From. Democrats have to chew on for goodness sake let the church gods home and I mean I know the queen you should not stand. But just. You know. That. Some But I have. To come. In. Right thank you Carol I'm not going to talk about he said you do get variety on this program thank you very much and enjoy the gig Carol. Now they go there. But for keep coming through you can text as well and of course you can aim out Justin dot daily at baby say talk out what u.k. I think it's going to be one of those hectic busy busy nights I think with a bit of this. Just to try and say. This story. I guarantee you will put a smile on your fire. And I think we need that and. I've been talking to Henry Danton. Henry is 100 years old. He's originally from the Eastern Counties he now lives in Mississippi in the state . He is one of the greatest ballet. In the world. Now is being back in the u.k. This way to receive a medal from the Royal Academy. For a route. Back in 1942 white all of these years to get the meadow that he won in the 1940s I've been talking to you hammer is an absolute gent here is what happens. In 77 years ago you should look at this medal it didn't quite happen although she. Why what happened. Time there was someone it was assumable over was being. Able to get to the end of the world and I left England for never got the medal. For how did it feel this way to eventually basement or from the row in the cabin may have domes What does that mean so you had a merry. And never makes me do it again. Because again so what made you want to go to America all of those years ago. There was a member will not be in so much rationing we couldn't get business that. Winter from when the war finished because I wanted to work with a teacher that I. Needed to work with so I went to France and I stayed there for 2 years and then I came back to England and I wanted to get back into the belly coming of they wouldn't take me so I thought I was going to Americans it was happening and you'd never know it but you miss the you can't it's oh no not a little. Bad never came back to you. Can you believe in full to you yeah and then I only came back because I had to come back. Why did you have to come back to me else can and will I when I got still have a. Reason and what you called rooms nothing really and you have a good. And one time. Last agreement. And I had to get it again and then old times in that I had to come back to England and apply for it they can you believe you go and he went back so I had to come back here and. I've come back for one days ago the American Embassy to do something if I get what I need in Mississippi you are something of an absolute legend over there because people look up to you and you've got absolutely no plans whatsoever to retire Have you good for you know now. Look at the world. You are a joy I suppose the out some a question is you know you're a 100 years old you sound amazing you stand incredibly fit what is the secret to your success well. The downs and I'm changing down enough I have to stand on condition. I think that's a vegetarian for 50 years now. I think the combination to exercise what you read. Now this is interesting because you say you became a vegetarian 50 years ago you probably have only vegetarian realms 50 years ago when you return cranked up that. Level of the round one vegetarian restaurant in London News crew crank. Actually cranks. Well Nell Look what you've started. I would say probably one in 3 people I know now of vegetarians he has an incredible really amazing was happening over the. Just one further question in terms of bad I don't sing in the non-singing forty's World War 2 I think that's when ballet really would he took off in this country would you agree with that. And actually happened during the war work there were 2 candidates and that it was not really known in the provinces and. We played in every single single city in k. And that's how that anybody. Interested in it and never seen it before and they liked it and I think it was an escape from the war you know. Bally's or fantasy in a. Magical Place to Susan princess is a magical thing and it was came through a war you need go and to constantly really have the love being. Right it's been a pleasure talking to you have a safe journey back to America so so when's your next lesson when you get back to Mississippi when you think. You've got Henry thank you so much for joining me on the program really appreciate it and what's a man I look can we find anybody to know. It was still doing ballet. 100 years plus.
