Now we're having a wonderful evening tonight talking about some creativity creative and artistic people and our next guests are most certainly that we do love on the show when we stumble across some wonderful a businesses and passions that are run by by people right here on the north coast as exactly what happened with our next guest coming in from pebbles and more and I guarantee you will have seen sin their workers are very very great stuff and they hate to chat about how they transform the simple pebble the might just you know walk past not even think about they're on the beach into an amazing work of art and so joining me in the studio Sam and also got my rig never of got that right issue very good not quite not very difficult or no insulation but but but but we're getting there now just describe in the kind of the best way you think of the work that you do you've brought some beautiful frames in here and they're based around kind of beach pebbles up there but you turn them into kind of much more than that yes we every day we make pitches from pebbles we do use other things as well pieces wood pieces drift wood it's to see glass shells and what started off as a simple just a person. It's grown to become more and more. People get more and more and more details with what they'd like what they'd like. And it's just become a big fun thing really work and they owners prove my dad's a goal for coming in as a golfer. And we say yes of course we can. Or a cricketer or a fisherman and a horse rider. And each one is a challenge Yeah so we have to think how how can you do that how can we get. A swimmer for example how do you do a swimmer after pebbles Yeah well that's a good question how do you how do you do that I mean. Spend hours to work out do you have felt for something for the sea and this guy had wanted. To get one for his club. Swimming Club. You know hats and that was the job Yeah we spent. Because we haven't been defeated yet on the on Challenge Ok Ok so they say we play by various things and coming up the water and nothing seemed to work and you have to find a simple way where people can recognise it as a swimmer. And identify with a particular club or a color or whatever and so yes you got some examples here so you out you add in other elements as you say it's a look at this one that's here wow that's amazing so so the background these is is that painted into the sky and then what she would say it's painted Ok so many painted some photographs some. Colors work let's go yeah and you know person as it were is 100 percent from pebbles and stones is quite amazing as you say how you can create. Really quite character for person as well yes for you know there is literally like 7 studies that I guess that's where the real skill is picking then the right I want to be the right proportion is wrong yeah when we 1st started doing this work. Pretty awful. You know. There from our drawing. Different shit misshapen. Lumpy pebbles was. All smooth smooth and flat and people still bought them. So yeah yeah the original ones are worth even though you. Can procure and so that is your question and so where do these pebbles come from where the source I'm from they come from France because it's illegal to collect them around the coasts around here is that right you see and actually really because nothing we don't have for yeah looking plenty of pebbles around here around bulk up on the coast and somebody was saying right right Ok so we travel down to the south from very old camper van and some waste ground rough ground near a couple of beaches that we know and there are just lots and lots of pebbles and bits of driftwood very very small pebbles all have to be picked individually Yeah I thought you had to just sit them out and just leave it out but now we go and we say right 20 minutes of picking dogs tell you also. Picking arms and legs and so on. Very start with did you do you a bit more or less selective you know kind of pebbles and then worked out Reza suppose now you do know what you're looking for to get. People to offers a challenge that's where the funding is. And. We can work from there on. This particular challenge what do we need and then the discussion around the table is it going to be a close it's going to be far away one or medium shot. Come we know. Because when people see it. They want. Replica and yeah sometimes yes bear in mind when somebody sees one and they say oh could I order we do a dog. Yeah yeah what I ordered don't believe it could I would one like that says long as you know that it's not identical and now they start saying well actually our spaniel also could have actually Mine's a German Shepherd Dog In fact I got 4 German Shepherd dogs could they have point to years and this is the coloring I can. Make him very very very disparate Yeah these are these are the top of the musician you know this is like it's over Ed Sheeran looking character. You're absolutely right he has one. Yeah that's represents a little bit but maybe that may go a bit but it's great that you really enjoy and embrace the challenge you know because that could be something which you know someone else might find after I was really frustrated because some one specific thing but you're saying that's actually the real thing is it's good fun when somebody says can you do a ballerina Ok I shall. Use a shelf for the tutu and so on and decorate it or some will say they've seen the golfer and say can you do a skier. And we find you know they like skiing and outdo airs and so on so we'll find a picture of that and it's all how you painted people start saying. Mom runs in a pink pink t. Shirt and dad has black joggers in the West End and bikes we seem to only the motor bikes at the moment rising to motorbikes and but not just motor bikes this is a this is a. 1000000 do any challenges when we 1st started for obvious reasons we knew our limitations and so many. To craft said to us can you do well I mean dad. Said. I think you're going to be a dog. Who's a game keeper. Could you have him with his brother and their dog shooting a pheasant in some reeds. Could his brother have his gun asked. With . No problem. With one 0 wow. My goodness yeah there you go that was about 34 years ago so we've progressed quite a bit since then yeah. The Old Ones thing. But as you know that's that's that's a good thing at least you can you can spot if you see them there can you go out so you know 2000 and. But how did this originally come about you know when you 1st decided to do the very 1st one what made you want to do it when I was making craft from recycled materials like a and more in pebbles The more I had my own stall and Myrick bless him was my donkey just carrying it to very very large letters and so on and then I made him this mom which I made for for his birthday which is painting of our just a piece of wood and it's a picture of our house and then the balloons modeled on the up story. And he took one look at it and said I think I could do something like that I think well so for a little while we had a bit of competition. Ok and I did the bell that you ran if you made the 1st sale. Who makes today is who makes the most sales because I knew you need Christmas and I said a lot of angels. Makes the most. Obviously I didn't stand a chance because my 4 pound things. And then we gradually as the pebbles took off I do the sort of painting in the writing bits of it. We decided to sort of merge businesses as it were Ok pebble some more so it's predominantly pebble pictures with the more bits being. Things are we so I called that I still might but that fit with their sort of Beachy theme Oh nice Ok so what we got here you've got a lighthouse sometimes there's a magnet sometimes they're hangers and they're made from reclaimed zips and they start Wow Tetra Pak. Is 100 percent recycled so the reclaimed zips the ribbon is that once you get a new clothes cut Yeah. The door and the windows are made from off cuts of leather from a lady in my office who makes handbags I send to the postage she post me back what I love yeah and I think people are really starting to get appreciation of of up cycling or reusing and using every part you say not having you know not being wasteful if you are creating something or so the store now became to a craft fair in stores you would see predominantly the pebble pictures in frames and someone framed with a few beach huts and a few light houses and doorstops you can sort of littering decorating the place and the sound of a bell with the same. Now you kept changing the rules. Very clear I think very very graphically. I'm and is there any works in progress that particularly tricky ones you've got ongoing at the moment what's in the production line is really. In order before we went to France. A motorcyclist and. She provided a photo of. The motorbike. We tried using a program to. Delete him off the bike Ok And you know I like is a background right Ok it was like. We then worked with the lady in question as we do with most of these people and send emails this is what we're doing Ok what we're doing at the moment. And then some pain to the pebbles the color of lettuce and yeah Ok yeah so from there we will then go to. The Yamaha. My my dog drives a Honda and so you're going to have particular bikes the right size Yeah there's a lot of digital work to be done on. Very very special to the people can yeah. Because it's part of them when they did a vintage car. For somebody who is 70. Made out of. Well. Becomes very yeah very individual Yeah so I think they want to encapsulate something in there including in it that he is he's very very special to them that's absolutely incredible I know it's there's a for the football fans of the north. So we were inundated when they went out really you know the people we were writing almost essays on the amount we were sort of a mile outside of school as Aston Villa While I don't know reached. The premiership here we come we have people saying I'll buy that one now I don't say no I'm sorry that one sold out kind of we had almost a whole football team on our dining room table I don't think anybody would be getting this week's score. Unfortunately But this is absolutely amazing so that if there is someone who what's the best way to get in touch to be the following The ones that are used to make ones that aren't there certainly were spoken you could just buy them well yes. They were me or you do you think one she's a family somebody's books can take you anywhere where they're sorry ones that are various places there's ones with dogs and things that people can get there and then . The best way to get in touch with us is either through Facebook. Or a local craft fair Ok right monthly most months keling various of the Christmas events or through our Facebook page brilliance and use and use do you still do you know you still enjoy even though you're getting busier and you still some of the you get a lot of fun out here every day is different because you know today we were having a look at we've got some shelves and we saw when we were on holiday some line drawings of flamingoes and they're big begin at the moment and they feel they are unicorns and we thought all right Ok now I shall and the draw the legs so we're working on now and then the day before we're working on a little one for you for the for the radio Oh my goodness. I can't believe it wow. Some believe I literally speechless there is the Jack Jack show October 2019 he is far too handsome. To look you up on the Internet. Because I see the. P.c. There is going to look at some distinctive features that work was actually there you see this is the wrong model of mixing desk on the I was. A young one and. You're looking like. A fantastic Oh my goodness I'm going to take a picture of this there's me I've got my headphones you get the glasses and I've got to go mixing their speakers thought I should take a picture and post this on line well thank you so much I'm really only. It's incredible and and yeah well I'm sure you can have people get in touch and well next time we speak she may have an even more challenging story to update us on and that's my last question is can you even though you're not allowed to take them from the English British beaches can you actually walk on the beach and enjoy it just for a walk or do you suddenly walk and think Oh my goodness there's a good looking well when we look to look for heart shaped stones on a beach and it got to the point where I had to take a handful from a draw if we got a gravel drive so if I did see a stone that was in a nice heart I could put one from a draw I want to do yeah so I wasn't really taking the stone. No we do in fact actually got sanded and now. Only people say look at some of the work and you could do that. You see him go and then the little beaches on the stones are not what you see run around here or a tree so not suggesting yes we can walk the beach. If you want so now the growing ends are there in the sand Well exactly. Well thank you so much for coming in and thank you so much for the my my wonderful present I really appreciate it I'm sure was going to get very soon thank you. Down. Bands. Better. Than a. Live chat . Chat Show on b.b.c. Radio no fuck. Head. Go oh. Just. Hey hey. Hey beautiful. Beautiful. Oh. Oh oh. Oh oh. Oh oh hey. They. Need to. Let. Me give. Now this morning we had a little bit of the coast right here in Norwich sing your hearts out choir here as part of a very busy careful Kara's event in the forum I have a here in Norwich the singing group run sessions around the coast from Great Yarmouth all the way up to Kings lane as and as this Thursday is World Mental Health Day We sent our report to several It came down to have a chat about how singing can help calm minds. Just as day is well mental health day and with so why not find out about what you can do in the case t. Know if your mental health and we found that even a sing song is something that you know. I'm here with any old and new. It was found on a single hot towel cry at night as I'm not there and they found that there was several Alpha Spencer the stone to long time ago about 14 years ago in Helston hospital and I'm some day has come to life time mental health problems and the idea was to have an activity for people with mental health problems and so the phone to trace him will feel this is psychotherapist to you seeing himself until the singing might be good to people with mental health problems and how right she Wallace So years later I'm still here involved in bonding it but now there are many more of us and we spread out from house to hospital tool over the counter a. Good head nod I went from somebody who could hardly lift my head up to Cindy who is not only a tool to the people but to speak in public. So it gave me a lot more confidence it gave me my self-esteem back it's enabled me to be a person again. The car the singing in home in a house being proved scientifically to be really good for the mind the something. More important than singing in human a said it does something different to the brain I'm not sad to think enough to know the different parts of the brain but the research is a failed. State and can ask how did you go about setting it out of it tonight was it just if you got together and had come along and have a scene if you want to it was Tracy out Helston hospital who found the little bits of money go to post coach him to start the sessions and it was soon after that that I called him volved and also Mikey Wheeler who is chair of the mental post just sighed she. It was involved from the very beginning and so after this little bits of money brought out we decided we'd really all so tried make it something bigger and take into the community so we started fundraising only lucky enough to win the nearly prize for integration in mental health which gave us far 1000 pounds of been able to start really get going and that was a single national prize that we've won so if someone comes along t. One of your singing latch offs what happens what's it like to only for a session Well 1st of all their own think greeted at the till Oh yes I think I've been before they've made 12. And we still put the voice coach Stowe says with the Wal-Mart where we shake or so it was all over the pit and stretch the Gulf you'll need oh do I make you also it's a silly noises to get people's forces will put some right the feel relaxed and then we grudged they start into little bits of vocal exercises and then simple songs that you learn by repeating and as this new people every week rule was taught from the beginning it's not like a quad We don't rehearse and do concepts already stated. And then we have a break with refreshments a little with chocolate biscuits. Oh say here is Judy from the champs the border to yes we've recently become a registered charity just in month. So we've now got full of trustees but I've been involved in singing a hard time for several years now did you start off with somebody who came along to say I still was you don't somebody you came in on supporting somebody else I was a volunteer with No it's mind time and came along with somebody who wanted to to experience that. Activity as part of community engagement getting people back into the community is part of their mental health recovery and I've been involved ever since you know yes you do get involved in community and in the organization itself so yes that's how I got hooked into it going along as a support for somebody else not a fake c Do you see this happening on the people that were that world but very often people come along and you can see when they 1st started they maybe not in a very good mood you know they're feeling a bit. Suffering from anxiety as well but by the end of the session I can virtually guarantee that they'll be a smile on people's faces and they also know I saw a change in the people I I was supporting to get engaged with other people and talk to other people and make friends so as well as the singing which is good for the mood there's also a social element to it where people can make new friends and rediscover some of the confident their social confidence for example I mean a lot of positive feedback from people I mean once a year all 5 of our groups get together and have a what we call a big stick so that's a tremendous thing and it's got a lot of positive feedback from. Some of the quotes that people say I really enjoy singing it lifts my mood and makes me happy and joyful and also from the mental health point of view the effect last full day and night afterwards communal singing like communal storytelling is a basic human right to come but loneliness is. The a must have lifted my spirits and self-confidence and a total antidote to depression and anxiety so I think the comets kind of speak for themselves and it just gives us the motivation to. Offering How amazing to sit here tonight that just these little workshops the state just come along and have a seeing that it has that much of an impact on people yes it does it does make you feel good to see that you're able to offer a service like this that people can benefit from and feel pressure to sell so yeah it's a 2 way thing really enjoy singing as well but also to see the effect on other people this is particularly revolting really had it being read and I made. Was that it was the so you can come along now where can they find. Anybody over 18 can come along if they want to just enjoy singing while the other people are still way of improving their moods thought their recovery or whatever we've got 5 groups across the county. In. We started in Norwich as Kenny said then we got groups in a full power sharing a Great Yarmouth and King Flynn as well so 5 and they all all the workshops take probably take place during the day the day time people can come along dropping you don't have to book in advance you don't have to be able to sing and you don't have to be able to sing you just want to sing if you want to sing and enjoy singing with other people and that's what you're you're invited to come along to and enjoy it and we feel so we sing lots of different songs from world music through to simple little runs African runs some pop music some folk music some for school so it's a wide variety something that we hope feels to everybody is how to take. It. The was the. The. The was. Fantastic it was Sophie look kins they're going along to bring us a report on the fantastic event which is happening just outside our studios here in Norwich for the sessions have been running right the way along the coastline as we say pretty much the whole way from Great Yarmouth roundtrip to Kings lane and as I mentioned earlier on in the show right the way through this week we're going to be looking issues surrounding mental health and wellbeing as Thursday is World Mental Health Day and right the way across a show that she so Wednesday night young people will be coming in from the u.s. Advisory board talking about the work they've been doing with the Norfolk and Suffolk foundation trust there's also a group of young men from City College talking about how they're looking to encourage men to open up about mental health issues on Thursday night which of course introducing our introducing show we looking at the way music is being used to talk about the problems that people may have and on Friday evening on the Sophie little show we have soon who is a panel member on the show their weekly panel who runs mine the gap a group that uses singing to help people a bit like what you've what you've just heard in fact and also on the show on Friday night they were the team from the get me out of these 4 walls talking about well being for new parents so loads loads of stuff being covered right the way through the week here and all those shows kicking off every evening just like this one at 7 pm through til 10. Frank the road Hale b.b.c. Radio Norfolk 16 minutes to 10 we're coming towards the end of the show we've already had so much brilliant stuff in the 1st part and just before we finish we're going to be taking you to a brilliant final shot which is day in the middle of Paul transforming their former post office into a mecca for play people who want to go and listen to collect them buy their favorite records it has some amazing patrons lots and lots of obviously local enthusiasm also some very very famous faces as well so we'll be having a listen to that before we finish up here at 10 pm on the jazz show. Falwell's the run. And if you're a big fan of music I'm pretty sure there's lots of people that would make the argument that vinyl is by far and away the best way to listen to your favorite tracks and the actual facts of a huge resurgence and is coming back everywhere and in and in the wonderful gift I was given a seedling by our guests from pebbles and more depicting me in the radio studio there I am spinning some vinyl Unfortunately I have to say in this highly technical digitise what I'm not here with some 12 inch vinyl records is highly you know computerized stuff but there is a place you can go if you want to get that love the vinyl back get the traditional sound of music and if you do love a bit of vinyl you're going to love this next feature i Reporter Chris Sadler has a favorite spot in Holt called the vinyl vaults and he popped along to see Andrew the owner of the shop and give us a taste of this very special place. Andrew Parker is and you can just tell me Yeah Andrew worse than the proud owner of the of the final vote when I'm playing records postmaster flash d.j. Postmaster flash reference to my previous career as house postmaster could you just describe where we are. Old school records show. Hosted by the punk office which used to be the post office Yeah we got over 3 rooms we've got a fabulous walk in post office safe in there. Listening and practice being a d.j. a Lot of interesting welcoming environment people we've got sort of 23000 records of something listed on a database if you know what you want you can ask us can tell you within seconds if we got it and then hopefully within a minute or 2 we can find it for you as there's lots in here to go through like a library I like to think. Of them borrow. Perhaps now we can take a look at leave the what you call this room the old Well the vote especially since the votes rule because around who can vote. At the time listening to is known as the Fortress of Solitude do you know what that is Chris a reference to Superman Yes no doubt well doubt it was wasted his crypt and I am assured I'll want to call it the back as you say because that's why I was brought up on the cutting back mining of the late sixty's and in my Fortress of Solitude is . Yeah we upgraded that decks in the in the mind space out there the safe space as we call it is another safe out there so paradox here with a mix of headphones on the listening still there and it's not like the record shops of the sixty's you don't need better cause you can practice being a d.j. Or the pictures up in the got the style of the Beatles and Bowie and the books in it from John pale to Jewry 20 discounted or couple of the arrows over here as well special to talk about your past a little bit so what did you do before you came here oh gosh oh I worked in various capacities in so I actually cation radian ministration public public sector kind of stuff nothing very interesting rather on rock n roll to be honest but you had moved to Norfolk 20 years ago and. Ended up buying a post office actually one in in sharing it and that was the my 1st record shop come post office that was closed down in 2008 I think it was. So then I booked a post office in hopes thinking this one never be close to. Weiss but it did. So anyway hence we're now the punk office but now I'm not better you know we found a way to survive and thrive. On this site and will be here for a few years few years to come. For the famous visitors now you do have a famous visitor please tell us about him I think you're probably referring to my friend Tim. Yet a. Great supporter of the show I must say the last few years started when he used to come and use it as his local post office when he lived in town in fact and . Yeah I found a few records for him that he featured in his book we start farno adventures from Istanbul to San Francisco didn't quite manage to get hole in the title but we won't hold it against him but yet tim loves record shops great great supporter of record shops and yeah he comes in from time to time often with a. Stock of stock of records and will you know it a trading between us and keep stuff in circulation so yes Superguy. For you for your in the moment to tell us about our gosh Well yeah because this fellow David I think our return does it for me and if he's still in for. A few years ago basically he I just bought a record collection and there was this particular record I didn't recognize and you're always curious of records you never seen before and David I must just. Leave a kiss I think it was called 70 single and. I gave it a listen I suppose outside was impressed really. But you know yeah well it was interesting it was interesting and it was such a strange thing a couple of days later this chap comes in and I'm looking for a particular record by anyone he's looking for his own record because his daughter doesn't believe that you ever had a pop career and he wants to convince and he did that was great reuniting somebody with their own long lost output. Isn't written is just wrong he says I mean I don't see myself ever retiring music's a lifelong passion I mean this for the long haul like I wouldn't I want to do it myself I wasn't it wasn't playing records all day so. Yeah I've kinda continued to exist in the in one form or another as for Van oh yeah a lot of people coming over the vinyl of whatever you know it up in the sky 15 years now. Blink of an eye compared to some people have thought it will that all their lives but you know you see ups and downs but I like it's not the steam trains you know the North. The trucks up didn't I And then the volunteers put them back and the music industry itself tried to kill off I know. It's come back it's never going to go away and you used to beat you just kind of be hearing that the music as it was originally recorded as it was meant to you know. The jukebox we haven't mentioned Rocco to jukebox have we got a song for Jack some for Jack oh my god. The switch. The lights come on Chris looking good what do you think. I was going to find the right record Chris after this build up right they would go. That's the last time this could be the last time I was not the last on you are out on the boats for cybersecurity. One of my biggest racoons. He. Told you know. Andrew was dial of the Bonneville impulse thank you very much there. Wow absolutely fantastic not only did I get my own dedication a special record there was a bit of singing going on Chris was that your dulcet tones are good is singing along as well absolutely fantastic Wow that sounds like an absolute treasure trove of a shop even if your you're not into vinyl you're down there anybody that loves music should go and check that out thank you very much Andrew for your time and myself need to get down there and check it out you may even have a and I'll jaywalkers record in their data be very pleased but I want to say a massive thank you to everybody who came along to the show this evening way back at the start we had Christine from Barefoot retreats telling us about Hidden Gems along the north coast of course to be Arts Festival.
