The day goes on there's a bit of a difference tomorrow because the winds are coming from a westerly direction so that's not quite so cool and as a result temperatures are going to do a little better tomorrow we're looking at highs of 22 Celsius the coastal forecast then well we're looking today at 4 let me just quickly get my coastal folk up so it's already a minute for the wash to have rich sunny intervals wind force for wind direction west west northwest becoming West maximum gust 22 knots becoming 20 knots sea state Madra becoming slight pressure at 1014 millibars M L culls with your B.B.C. Radio Norfolk weather it's a cold. This is because your hands are shaking so mostly old clothes down here like you know you are going through God to. Thank you out to get up to get. Something back for last week and to me only 6 on the B.B.C. Radio No 5. Get ready to hear I hope you're well and happy this Sunday morning thank you so much for joining me across the county where I feel listening and. Still ahead the Liberal Democrats formulate a Tim found we speaking to me about his leadership his faith and those comments around sin and homosexuality. A passionate cyclist is about to embark on what he says is his toughest challenge yet to raise funds for charity work with vulnerable children and adults in India. And I've been speaking to find them OK from the Islamophobia response units who've received over following pondered cases in the past 5 years one of those targeted was just 6 years old right now we're up to the moment by Nabl to take on as many cases as we'd like to only really rely on our volunteer legal supervisors especially in these legal supervisors old lawyers who are sad and their families and a really lovely people who are giving up their time to support victims of the slum affair because there's a real need for a moment songs from Michael bublé and share in the. But starting off Dolly Parton. Together and live which might be tough gets chinning to keep going to the something from say with a big country show for music like that and all kinds of youngsters of country he's absolutely fantastic love the music that Keith plays very loudly on in my household now in the former leader of the Liberal Democrats Tim Farron decided to publish a book about his life career and Christian faith he couldn't have imagined that it would be in a week of such political controversy join the last election his Christian faith became the main focus in the media after he was asked why the homosexuality was a sin is also biographies called a better ambition and I also. Him why he wanted to write the book I wanted to share my experiences have been lead the Liberal Democrats through another tumultuous time for us but. A great significance for the contrary proud I guess of the job we were able to do to have actively stop the Liberal Democrats from dying altogether 2050 but having I guess rescued the the Liberal Party from nonexistence the sense I wanted to put a book together about was really about looking what liberalism ought to look like in the future that it should be an active liberalism that does good as well as preventing harm but also that it's a liberalism that stays truly liberal I guess you know to a degree that also means. Making the case for people with a religious faith to be active in the public square and for his thinking perhaps differently and more positively about the place of faith. In our political life now at the time of the election your position on homosexuality was portrayed as contradictory does this sort of a great bring you clarity on that we'll have to read I guess but I mean my my sense is that the even I am a liberal I didn't wander into the liberals by mistake I'm a liberal and I'm an Orthodox Christian and that shouldn't be peculiar in a genuinely liberal and tolerant and diverse society the notion that that is peculiar is peculiar and I suppose an amount of what I seek to do in the book is to to make the case that we may in west in liberal societies have wandered into a not very liberal space where we treat the absence of faith as in the absence of any active faith or the can neutral position and those people who hold a religious faith has been at best a bit wacky and eccentric and I think that an illiberal and wrong headed point of view I think people with and without a faith should have an equal place in the board. Square and so yes I certainly argue that case graciously forcefully throughout the book how how do you manage to to balance those 2 things to being a Christian and deeply resting in your faith and being liberal at the same time and so having to accept that there are all kinds of different traits of people well that's what real liberalism is I think one of the dangers that I see over the last 2030 years in. A Western liberal democracies but obviously I know this one better than the other so we'll just say in the United Kingdom is that maybe some people are for one for the ruse that liberalism is about everybody marching together in the middle and everybody agreeing on absolutely everything and never offending one another. That isn't liberalism that sounds pretty horrible and totalitarian to me the real liberalism is people genuinely respecting different points of view and fighting for the rights of the other I mean any any all fascist can fight for the rights of people they like and agree that's not liberalism to be a liberal is to fight for the rights of people who choose a very different path to you so to me my liberalism is fully authored oxen and radical and very very happy in the party that I used to lead but now strongly support Jo Swinson in the leadership of I just love people to think of liberalism in a way which is active in defending the rights of others but also active in in doing good in our economy I think we're the danger with liberalism in the broadest possible sense and not just to whatever the Lib Dems I'm talking about I guess everybody from from Ken Clarke to Hillary Clinton they are the danger is that liberalism in the Western world has become inactive it's sort of settled and accepted settled for and accepted the dogma of the free market being the only way to solve things I think a real liberalism would do more than just prevent harm it will go out there and actively do good in our economy creating jobs tackling climate change in a very ambitious and act. The way we are in an historical point in place called history you can see that for years to come people are going to be looking at this section of the U.K. Politics to. Do you wish that you were still in that same in in the middle of the discussions taking place at the moment but I'm a member of parliament and I I think that former leaders shouldn't go away and silk they should stay involved and I feel very energized by the leadership of Jos Winston's I'm very happy to be part of her team and to give advice when it's sought and to work hard for her so I feel very involved and very central to it all I think that this is an exciting time honestly as a father I find it a worrying time for the kind of country we might be because. I worry that one thing we should always take some solace from is that there was never a golden age at least at the was it was Eden and. And so we shouldn't go around thinking that today is spectacularly awful compared to yesterday you know when I was my children's age we were all you know literally living under the shadow of the bomb and so those were tough times as well as I think. Christian point of view is remembering that all things are temporary that all people are flawed but also equally wonderful and have dignity and made in the image of God and you should love and serve them at all times and in all places and yes these are difficult times but it's all the more important that people you know like myself stay fully involved and attempt to passionately argue our case whilst demonstrating grace to people who might not demonstrated to us your colleague governments announce that he's going to be stepping down in our county you're confident the Lib Dems will continue to have an M.P. Yes I'm sure that's so enormous legacies is immense and I'm sure that his support of the Liberal Democrat candidate who will succeed him will be something that should be very telling in the coming election but. I mean Norman is an outstanding person when I was 1st elected in 2005 he's the one I sought out for a personal advice and mentoring as to how one operates in the new world of serving a constituency as a local M.P. Because nobody does it better than. The norm and so I mean I wish him and Mary an extremely long and happy retirement and I was going to do very important things you mental health charity after he steps down but a great loss for Norfolk but I'm I'm sure that Norman successor will be will be successful thank you so much for join me on Sunday part for us this morning thank you. Danny Wilson and Mary's prize 22 minutes past 8 passionate cyclist is about to embark on what he says is his toughest challenge yet to raise funds for a charity working with vulnerable children and adults in India just in footers is taking on a 2 week cycling marathon from the south coast to Thurso in the north of Scotland and back after visiting the Christian projects his small shinai adventure will have begun about 20 minutes ago but only Geoffrey caught up with him earlier this week as he was making his final preparations for the trip and gave her some history about his trusty bike this Pinarello which is tiny in frame was built by a frame builder who built a series of frames for me when I began racing in the early nineties this is been down to Italy from the U.K. A few years ago and I campaigned for probably 3 or 4 years about a decade ago so I sort of brought it back out of retirement really and you want to read the travelling light that there's not much room for baggage on this bike not much from a toll as you can see we've got a package at the back which will take about 7 liters and at the front about 6 liters a couple of cages for water which I'm going to need throughout the journey there will be a spare kit that I'll be taking on route but there won't be a dinner suit to wear in the evenings I can assure you a huge challenge how many miles are we talking about well I think this is also quite a flexible our answer because. It could be anywhere upwards of 1600 to 1700 miles and my plan is to arrive in Thurso which is the northernmost town in the British Isles on site. Today evening which is the 7th I'll stay over night I should go to the services and Pete is in 3rd and it will be high and by a normal way home there's no pre-planned accommodation on this adventure that I'm looking for a 4 star treatment throughout the church. Yeah I mean because I suppose my my idea behind this sort of 2 will pilgrimage is that it will be organic and as I move throughout the county here is a beginning with the South 6 I'm hoping that the generosity to support the awareness of the Endeavor will be open arms Tell me more about the charity that you're raising money for you out in India and have witnessed some of what Lady C.M.C. T. Christian mission is charitable trust was formed around 52 years ago in the 53rd year in now by a lady called Colleen he in fact comes from New Zealand and her mission was to really cater for the vulnerable which she and her team of continue to do and we saw firsthand the compassion and support and sort of ongoing just wonderful approaches to aid people that are the most vulnerable children young people and also old outcasts the have nowhere else to go they provide food to between turns 3000 people a day what struck me the most about actually being with some of these people when you're out in India the smiles tense smile shinai because I think that if you think of a smile it does make you smile we saw people that were a lower than than any poverty that I had ever seen they had nothing nice people were so kind and so warm towards. And really treated us as their own in an athlete's tear my Suppose you're going to have to really dig deep at points along the way and where are you going to draw your strength from to keep going all the way there will be long days in the saddle there's no doubt about that I mean even if you too long at an average is likely to be between 9 and 1112 hours in the saddle just to complete 10220 miles a day and because you're carrying bags and Kit you don't actually run through the air very yeah I'm going to be digging credibly day into reserves and as you know really I'm not a young man and I think also I should be sitting in the shy when I can to hydrate and just take a snack and they'll be quiet time for prayer for me and we wish him the very best of luck if you'd like more information on Justin's challenge you can visit everyday hero talk code at U.K. Forward slash event forward slash smile Chennai 29000 everyday hero. Doesn't have always a fair outcome so I'm big friends and a big fan of fiar from if I'm honest but this was also a perfect example that it's not always like it was we are you can make football one percent found this is also a big example today he has Lin's how moved to 7 unbeaten in the national north of a tuna win over Darlington Lynn started slow but scored twice after the interval Chris Henderson score in both there was a big crowd of 1229 the walks to watch to the limits latest success the north side are 2nd in the table despite a good win Lingle score Henderson says I didn't have the best start we never really got going you know the way we played football at times in the 2nd half expressions towards the end once you know once you get your tiles up and you stop by and we would feel like we did and you know we're not pliable it's on just thinking the 1st half we think we could and it just wasn't clicking and I hate them the gaffer is coming after me settle I'd rather lose a game plan how we do it and you know we we didn't really like that we're not going fast often credits or lads that don't work done all season and responded to what is what is asked for. Radio Norfolk is antibiotics on Sunday breakfast now more than 500 cases of hate crime and discrimination against Muslims have been reported to a confidential advice line since it was set up 2 years ago one of those targeted was just 6 years old these are a phobia response unit is now so overwhelmed by calls for help they're appealing for lawyers to come forward and volunteer their legal expertise I've been speaking to far as I'm OK with heads of legal at the are you about the type of calls they get we have various types of cases so we get all the horrible gory stuff so the physical attacks of verbal abuse are not public chance for neighbor disputes things like that right down to discrimination in the workplace you know Muslim women who wear their job or Muslim men with the beard on able to go to certain events and things like that so if the spectrum is very wide and the point of the unit is to accommodate all and provide a platform for such victims to come forward and express themselves and tell us their stories and hope that he receives the support that they need clearly we are aware of the big moments far as Or and we think of time around the attacks in Christ Church we think about the London terror attacks those moments but actually what's been happening over the past few years far as Have you seen an increase apart from those sort of more obvious spikes for pay poll I think just generally since the BRICS it referenda and just the general rise and populism people are like more confident now than ever to express their concerns so in the same way the attacks are on the rise we found with that unit so people are more confident about reporting these incidents and I also feel the the use of technology and the ability for victims to record and capture attacks as evidence has definitely paved the way for more reports and is just social media generally like a. Had such a big influence as people are now I was homebody the support that they need to get their story hurt and since the reporting has increased Are you has expanded in its capacity so are able to advertise more in local communities which has empowered victims to report incidents of Islamophobia it's great that more people are coming forward far as a book clearly for you then that means more paperwork and more legal and court cases yeah absolutely why we're appealing to more volunteers to support us so it's the Right now the way that I use set up so myself I'm the head of legal OF THE UNION and I have a hate crime case worker. Myself that deal with when reports are made and we need log it and we monitor it and to be allocated to our fun and to case workers need supervisors so there's a real need for more volunteers to come forward and help support you because right now we're up Syria at the moment unable to take on as many cases as we'd like to only really rely on our volunteer legal supervise especially in these legal supervisors are all lawyers who are sat in their firms and well really lovely people who are giving up their time to support victims of Islamophobia because there's a real need for a moment and how many more do you are named Farzad as you say you know you're not having to proceeds at the moment how many are you looking for in terms of numbers or is it just as many as can come forward because they were Yeah. Yeah and as many as we can get really we rely heavily on volunteers to be able to take on cases with confidence so as many as we can and the other thing is we find a lot of our lawyers if they can't give the time and they say they're available for a couple of hours in the week then at least we can split the case and have another little supervisor on board to assist the client all the way through so if we can get as many lawyers as we can it be really helpful for us how crucial is it so you were. It's so crucial so just a quick example of one of our cases I don't know if you've heard of Zainab Hussein who was a Muslim woman in Leicester was driven into by a man named Paul Moore and he did a U. Turn and drove over her again and she was completely crippled by the entire scenario and the fear at the time was that the police were not accurately recording the incident the media will enact new reporting and not all victims were approached by the police at the time and because of the IOU and mend generally we had people on ground rallying liaising with the police trying to find out what had gone on and we had our YOU Representatives with then up to say in helping her throughout the evening providing other motional support and in the end poor more was charged correctly as a result of our activism in that area or more that actually convicted over 20 years and prison and that's just one example of how far we can go and how far you can make a change like a real change in the community for people who really need. Head of legal at the are you are you a fascinating just talking to about things that actually what they do and the amount of cases there and I just can't get that figure out of my head that one of them who talk of abuse was just 6 years old it's B.B.C. For North Norfolk Norman Lamb will stand down at the next election is a great loss to the county that's the view of the former Lib Dems leader Tim Farron Mr Farron says I'm still I'm always been very generous with his time and now deserves a happy retirement and when I was 1st elected in 2005 he's the one I sought out for but personal advice and mentoring has to how one operates in the new world of serving a constituency as a local M.P. Because nobody does it better than norm and so I mean I wish him and Mary an extremely long and happy retirement at least 5 people have been killed in a mass shooting in Texas the gunman also wounded 21 people including 3 police officers in the city of Midland ADESA He was later shot dead by police Russell typin is from the Medical Center Hospital in ADESA he says such attacks put things into perspective when you go to bed and that was your families you need to grab a hold on tight because nobody is guaranteed the next the next day and grab on to your families and love them and pray for our staff our doctors and these victims and these victims' families that use chief negotiator Michele Pani has repeated his promise that the Irish banks not will not be removed from the Bronx it agreement he says the plans to prevent a hard border is the maximum amount of flexibility that Brussels can offer. If you are heading to the beach today a new campaign is warning you to respect and protect the sand dunes the county council has come up with some tips to look after the deeds which form a natural flood barrier and provide a habitat for Walk life they're asking this to is to keep dogs on shore leads respect nesting birds and not have barbecues among the sand dunes counselor and you Jamieson hopes people will take the advice on board we're not in any way cut tailing people's enjoyment just teaching people or explaining to people how things can be done better and the sort of things people can do and I can see here's a little chap pair leaving the beach right now huge great bundle of rubbish going back home I mean that's just great. A Great Yarmouth call cum is holding its annual birthday money on the Golmaal today the east coast pirates group will be displaying that classic American cars it comes off to some businesses in the town said the front events that took place this year not the wheels festival only benefited companies that will pricing inside the road closure an area you can eyes on like who called who runs Jordan and the American Don says he hopes that everyone will see a based in full from today's event at the moment offered no complaints whatsoever it will become following dine to join the American $1.21 Celsius the maximum because of all cost for the washed how rich sunny intervals when forceful winds direction west northwest becoming West Mike some gust 22 notes becoming 20 knots sea state moderates becoming slight pressure 1014 minute balls I melt holes with your B.B.C.
