The value of shares in Sainsbury's has fallen sharply after the supermarket's proposed merger with ANSTO was thrown into serious downturn the competition's watchdog said the deal could lead to higher prices for consumers his own business correspondent John T. Blame saying spree and announced plans to merge last April but as a 2nd and 3rd largest supermarket groups in the U.K. They were always going to have a fight on my hands the merger would create the largest store group in the country with 2800 outlets now the competition the markets are storage He says it could block the deal unless the companies sell a significant number of stores as they fear otherwise it would force up the price of food and petrol and reduce quality and choice hundreds of people have turned out to want to fly past of Tornado jets as part of their fare well tour the R.A.F. Whatever you know about the Vikings prepared to be surprised at a major new exhibition that's opened in orange the The exhibition includes dozens of the most important artifacts from the Viking era around a 1000 years ago they've all been gathered together at the castle museum and have been along to meet 2 of the curators involved in bringing the exhibition here. The Vikings are coming to know our age but don't panic there won't be too much pillaging going on because this is a major new exhibition running until September at knowledge Council museum and here I am on top of the mound with a castle in front of me the show is called Viking rediscover the legend and we're going to go inside now and speak to Gareth Williams from the British Museum who have staged this all around the country and this is the final stop on the tour. Knowledge is an ideal place to end the exhibition one of the ideas throughout has been to show the different experience of the Vikings in different parts of Britain and Nora at the heart of the ancient kingdom of East Anglia is a good place to finish time because it's a kingdom and it was there when the Vikings game and we took it and made it their own it's a brilliant exhibition I just had a very quick look around and I know the final finishing touches are just being put on it but we're standing next to a large case here with some very fearsome looking weapons an X. Heads and what looks to me like a spear I mean this is what we think about Vikings isn't it that they came over here they raided and they were very warlike but this isn't the whole story it's only not the whole story but it is an important important part of our story and one which perhaps has got a little lost sometimes with the desire to tell the other side the wood Viking means a pirate a raider a marauders So when they 1st came over here that's what they were primarily known for but in terms of the lost in the impact. That of course is much greater we see them as traders we see them as craftsman poets settlers farmers so many other aspects of life so just to see them as warriors is is to miss most of the picture and indeed they settled as you pointed out many parts of where we are in this part of the country but the title of the exhibition the Vikings rediscovers do you think that's an important element that maybe people should should revisit and find out a little more about a period of history that we all think we know about but actually I've I've been finding out things here just in the last few minutes so really there's still a lot to know isn't there absolutely and our knowledge and understanding of the Vikings has been changing all the time but particularly in recent years the quantity of new information that's been turning up archaeologically whether through control that's give ations or metal detecting and of course this part of the world is really good in terms of metal detected finds being reported being recorded and ending up here in the museum in nor age. And this far as the artifacts are concerned in these galleries here all around us we've got quite a variety of things not just weaponry but also you've got stone carving and and silver objects as well to just give us an idea about the breadth of the show what we've got a range of material the core of the exhibition comes from the British Museum and the sheer museum and those are probably the 2 leading collections of Viking material in the U.K. But nor It actually is probably not far behind so to add that Norfolk component as well makes it the strongest version I think that the exhibition has had as it's moved around the country we've got sculpture just next to us here is a wonderful carved stone this is a really interesting one because it bridges that gap between reading and trading there's a figure here holding a sword in one hand and apparently dragging a female figure along with the other and slavery while you can you raid to get your slaves you trade to sell them on so the idea that when there are traders there are always peaceful traders isn't always quite so clear cut or so in terms of trade we've got a lot of coins across the exhibition and silver bullion the items that the values Vikings are valued by weight we've got everyday items we've got shoes we've got we've got work bone cones I mean people have this idea of the Vikings as being very sort of shaggy and unkempt but combs are amongst the most common fines that we have from from urban excavations and beautifully manufactured things as well we've got Viking loot but we've got evidence of the piece for activities as well. Might be biting. Great. Bring them in there and make whatever to the port. The Viking 3 discovered Dr Tim Passel is here at the council museum with amazing exhibition which really chancer quite quite a surprisingly long period of history to him it is and it's one of the most intriguing and in East Anglia It's where we see the end of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of East Anglia occur it was initially taken over as a kingdom as a sort of running into tea by the Vikings before we became absorbed into what becomes England and this is an element of history that everyone has heard of the Vikings we've all got our preconceived notions and I'm thinking Kirk Douglas in the Vikings and all sorts of things but what is the reality does it diverged much I mean do they really have pointy helmets and pointy helmets but not with horns on them. Yeah it's wonderful a sort of mythology that's grown up around the Vikings and you can see in this exhibition that that's a myth to some extent but of course it was grounded in truth the Vikings did come here to raid we know that from the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle The problem is that same series of Anglo-Saxon accounts is very partial because they didn't like the Globe and raided but in time the Vikings settled down because England's a very fine place to live and Norfolk and Suffolk were very good places to live as part of that and the place names of some parts of Norfolk still testimony to that fact and fascinatingly you can see a real cluster of them so the ILO flag has this whole roll of the wine name so rolls be Phil be more be scrappy O.-P. And so on and that's the Nordic trace that that's a Scandinavian place name element meaning the sentiment of so for instance in roles be you have the name developed from role for or Rollo a Scandinavian name which suggests that the settlement of roller is their star exhibit what are you most excited about well as. As a as a museum curator the things that I cover time action you could say are things like the veil of your core which is just here this is lots of shiny silver it was absolutely amazing collection of silver and gold armoring as well that was found in Yorkshire and it's got over 600 coins in the hoard but for me the thing that I really like is this wonderful silver gilt Bowl and the story goes that when the metal detector is to found a hoard 1st saw it coming out of the ground this sort of rounded shape of this cup like Bowl he thought it was a ball cock from toilet. It was only when he cleaned it up that he saw it was actually gilded silver with wonderful animal motifs on it that ultimately owe their origin to the Islamic world and for the Byzantine silks the sorts of objects that would have been seen in high status settings we know that they travelled very widely but they also traded they weren't just a warlike nation no and you can see this in some of the coinage that you get in this ward which is actually Arabic Durham's that come from the Islamic world and they've not just come straight from the Islamic world here they come up through the Russian River Systems through Russia into Scandinavia across the North Sea and then they get to England the Vikings rediscovered and it's on at the knowledge Castle Museum Dr Tim Pessl thank you very much and thank you very much I haven't seen any imagery of Kirk Douglas will you need to go just around the corner because we do have our perceptions of the Vikings. Did they really dance on the orders Music from the soundtrack of the 1958 blockbuster The Vikings starring Kirk Douglas and very unlikely Viking and they'd tell Tony Curtis was that he has and before that we heard from Dr Tim pesthole senior curator with the Norfolk museum service and Gareth Williams from the British Museum who are staging this traveling exhibition the final stop of which is in our age at the castle museum open daily through till the autumn and if that wasn't enough the small Vikings on the way later yes I had locked up everything in jail Lawrence's program as we had mentioned just before the news he will be joined after 7 o'clock by a group of young Viking reactors from sharing him and I'm sure that part of the coast a 1000 years ago they were looking anxiously out to say just in case a big square sail was seen on the horizon. We'll bring. Troops. Home and. You won't. We. Visit. C us. I never heard. A. All. As my. I don't. Mind. I. Don't. I was. Nothing. Oh. Look. Many of us have a dream call when my growing up something would like to when with a Ferrari or a pole. Well very few of us get the chance let's face it that's why back in the sixty's Ford decided to come up with an affordable object of desire they called it the car you always promised yourself and exactly 50 years ago earlier this month the Ford Capri 1st went on sale on the day of the Capris anniversary I went to meet the proud local owner of one of the sport's coup pays which were manufactured between 19691986 the Ford Capri was heralded by huge advertising campaign half a century ago and it was aimed firmly at the aspirational buyer. Day reaching your life. To meet. The excitement of expected small. Study like. This is Ford Capri. Look serious as a limousine. Powerful as a sports car. Which was an engines including a new 3 legally 6 range of models your 2nd in one. Ford Capri a car you always promised yourself it's built by Ford and it goes like. Well I've come to specs with minora each to meet the proud owner of a Ford Capri and it's sitting in front of us and this is very upright that really has when Ford craze or a common sight on the road this is where I lived in specs with so this is great going down memory lane coming back to specs with it also seeing this magnificent car. Oh a makeover it must mean you're married he Well also you plan to oh you have to buy things dropping everything so I. Thought you got the view now yeah just you know it was over. And I've been cushion is the proud owner and he's dropped everything today to show us his vehicle Hi I've been I know that well thanks for inviting me around and you got it out of hibernation today yeah yeah get it at the carriage and uncovered it and do a quick walk before you that's not normally on the road a little I pulled on so hard of the winter Well just to describe it is that Ford Capri shape and this is from 1883 as well as yet much I.E. 3 registered It's bright red and has a sunshine roof and it's looking absolutely perfect like almost concourse condition which you called I mean this like it came out of the showroom yesterday Yes-S. Took a lot work to get it this far but yes they seem pretty good nick the still was always something to do but it's really good twin headlamps at the front and the folk lights and everything else just what you'd expect from from that era is original originality very important for our doing I don't want to change the shape of the car because they just such an iconic shape but there's a few little bits and pieces on quite standard but to move things a period all in fit with the car I got to ask you I mean you're youngish guy what's the appeal of the Capri I still really if I wanted to be brother got me into when he 1st bought his and I just really liked him and since then I this is my 2nd one of his one of the 10 years and just kind of gone from one thing from another really and this is the 2.8 model yet to point to injection is when he had the 61 so quick yes fairly Yes he's a modern traffic no problem. I mean the thing people always use about caprice I don't handle so well is that what if you found it all depends on how you draw it to be honest if you're going to go mad everywhere then yeah they are a little bit tired happy but if you know you do and they're quite good fun really when you're a.b.s.e you computer aided nonsense Oh no there's no no Dr Rice no trash control us just you and it straight driven through the correct wheels yes we will draw you back wheels Yeah. So I mean the interest came then he wanted one of these what was it like when you were able to realize your dream Well I 1st bought what I had a to negate before this one sort of mark 3 and early one and that was only paid 600 pounds for it and I was on the road I had it running for 3 or 4 years and I thought Well friends of the 6 will nicely upgrade to this one but so yeah just there was good fun if you want to get inside now of course has been done right and around the site no central locking No no we didn't have in those days OK in here everything is beautifully polished What a treat just get inside. You know. Some low down coupe a shape we're inside here and steak and of this is all original stuff here and yet right here is the regional everything else in here is or should be so I'm really roomies cut that feel of a big cars and yeah when I 1st ball say. Well the wife and I we went to Scotland in a whole day for a week and yes pretty great it doesn't really mean yes lovely. OK You turned a few heads then yes it often looks over it when was the joy of an older call then because clearly you're keen on. Something it's got more characters you think yes a lot more current so you have to draw if you know you have to feel it to a new cause or for you so again in point in the right direction the way you get to something like this is a bit more fun and if any does you know you can welcome yourselves and I just you know annoys people or Eagle story back appeared to speak to people there was also one of them or my friend one of them is always a story so when I was here when things as well and your brothers go on as well I remarked social Yeah nails go black when you mash Oh yes I mean same years this 1903 he's a black one we always said Red was the better color but. Now he's had is for Cornell 15 years that he's restored amount one as well so both members of the king's into pretty close are often into shows of the cause and just generally use and really you know it's a terrific this and not so long ago you got married didn't you tell us about that yeah last September we got married knowledge doesn't work on a car you want to use of me when can I finish a fortnight before we got married we had a caprice in a convoy the church and it was yes really good. For you isn't it all right says like a wedding convoy and there were you with the white ribbons on. Yeah yeah I don't live in cars up my brother was best man so he had his rib and 6 hours in the Keys and a break up guy and you know it was a bit of a spectacle for the church what you want to Emily Emily what does Emily think it think she was taking to start with but she has to put up with it. She doesn't like the fact that when you go some way one looks at you you drive past well the const been in hibernation and you've got it out for us today which is very good of you because this time of the year. Really the salted road so cause they don't mix together very well no trolls use it too much in the winter so I'm you know be off on other cars all the talking as well. So you don't use in a summer talky Saul office say some of the work could you do. Let me read the book yeah. It's fantastic you know I've never been in the can for even this period. We had as a lovely Ross over the rocks being noisy set yet nice set. Point noise and noisy like. See below these come a standing ovation house petting the id's tonight this one had saved us all right somehow the one who did it it's a built in the front. Doing . Well. I passed staring I ask I'll post Aaron as it's so pretty and this was a high end one wasn't ready at all the smaller ones didn't have house staring at the tip when I'd have had a stare and I'm about 7 on the price most of rights just felt too bad for the age of the call. Because that will cause upset I now but he is a guy you really have to hit on the onco you know win over the house had to stand on the pedal and leave the stairwell to get leverage were getting up there a while minus specs with air into gust if you feel king of the road with that ball might as well like that's what little people remember of the call the long ball made Yes the show remember the bonus is such a long one it can be a fine to the pines Holmes when you come to a junk she can see around corners but that's not too bad he's only used to it. And what to play. You know right to this right very well. Points right see this car yes go then it's different whole seem to stand on it but yeah it's quite noisy deep noise they like and your member of the King's Lynn Capri club is that the big one locally Yes so the my one in this area we need to set once a month a pub and get it in and yeah he saw his bluff a bit in the club in calls or various or Pez and yet I just always bunch of people radio have a loft a chat and still talk like a brain. What's going on things all at. The Caprice got respectable now is that yes you have those difficulties Friday recently have some people look old this one I live in years ago I'll give just over a 1000 times for you spent to pick up a good example for grounds Yeah I saw a trip home from Kent I'm now you see ones of Obama phones they call them might as well 3 to 4000 pounds I don't even run. And sniff them for a good example you're paying up in the 2000s for something some bottles on you yes some of the rare ones my cousin 20000 pilots on the Green Valley on in share in salt lasting policy is tied to 14 so they have said Stephanie going to Vice all of them to. Well thank you ever so much even for giving me a trip around the block here in your Ford Capri 50 years when they were little changes over the production run when they buy the axe and started the site human it's a big birthday today isn't it yes a 50 is the brain is she able to tell you that yeah they did change coffee tongs over the is basically the off the wall the same underneath but is that just a difference or engine things and different specs and saw it things like that yeah that's why it was one of the last ones I'm with this will be a suspension more for and is that she really should take on new Pullman when they really start. No contest at all events Frank here guy is terrific and take the seat belt off and what a wonderful draw I thank you very much and that I'm in good luck with your love affair coming going forward you got more than one staple I am going to have put another one. Here to get a big I have a stash said yes and next thing you know you should assign your life now it's brilliant or even QUESTION Thank you very much no problem and thanks to the Congress yet no art the hype let's say he is not yes never seen a woman drug free now I mean let me says just a couple times over he came as he has I think well you see he's on a par on the insurance with a very different era of motoring Oh yes. Us Radio Norfolk travel.
