Squeeze an hourglass That's 987 which is one of the years that Stephen Buffy has gone one foot in the grave today after 1 o'clock Stephen bomb free back 219-1994 you know get on a chair that static shocks and everything and Carol a text in to say that earlier this year there was a point where when she picked up a shopping Barket basket in certain shops just a couple of supermarkets and one particular pound shop she got a static shock which is just one of the way it is things ever but John in the last in a said hi there Chrissy talking of getting shocks with shopping baskets are you sure when I filled mine and I get the total cost at the checkout thank you much for that John he always made you all he called like John was here a week now tomorrow we've got something very interesting read about this time tomorrow what will we be getting out to pole dancing pole dance of course or else why not hire else for a new job you didn't call me say a week or see I don't know I mean I've really got a kind of reduce the show you really haven't I said I probably won't be during the cold and the thing as it is for you go here I'm going to say I'll be here but the fighters and he leaves Kevin does leave Kevin why are we talking about dancing. Well did you see this is played in the headlines recently this month about pole dancing about to potentially becoming an Olympic sport in fact it's not really called pole dancing it's actually just called Pole and the international pole Sports Federation wants it to be recognized as an international sport they want to be seen as a sport because it's all about fitness it's not about the kind of the dark sleazy kind of pole dancing lap dancing clubs it's not really about actually more about fitness now and they must get really quite annoyed with the nudge nudge wink wink as soon as you mention pole dancing Yeah it has a label attached to it doesn't it but it's not the case so we're going to be speaking to Jane Cole from Kingsley and she's all about pole dancing fitness and you know trying to do see it as a sport because it uses a great deal of muscles she's going to be coming in hopefully with kind of a training pole so that Kevin can have a go so he's tired but there is a serious point to this about how it can help with a bit of fitness and we'll be finding out how how we can do very much like I can why not because it's good for men and for women as well apparently so so you're going to be having a go to Chrissy have a go bring image. But area that is from 11 o'clock tomorrow morning. a face in Cry trouble. Chrissy estatic shocks I don't think anyone so far to my mind is yet explained clearly why you sometimes get an electric shock when touching some metal objects electricity of all types likes nothing better than to get to Earth and electrical charge generated by lifting your bombs site off a seat made of manmade material or is each foot the the ground will usually leak away unnoticed the leather soled shoes if you got those or any footwear will clothing that has a mostly content now if you weigh it known conductive shoes and clothes I have you taken no to this because it might have questions later on they said that this electricity builds up and come get suddenly Skype's to any metal object which is on the no charged or is connected to when you touch it is that clear yes. Radio traffic. Ring Road like looking a little bit touchy in places at the moment Guardian road looking heavy need. Good morning Ted. Chrissy Jackson and till one we got the lunchtime take over coming up midday and till one have a guess one thing today is going to pay to do with Halloween trick or treat so have to think about some songs and you could give us a call right now if you want to get your choice in 016-036-1732 extension 1 codes have always been used to protect privacy share secrets conceal truth and win wars these days our digital lives depend on them but one of the greatest and what are some of the stories behind the mark Frary grew up India rim has written a new book decipher the greatest codes ever invented and how to break them and Mark joins us now Mark good morning morning pretty good morning now when I think of codes I think that sounds complicated when you think of codes what's what springs to mind for you. Well you know I really got into codes and puzzles like this when I was younger as you say I grew up in Durham and I was always having a puzzle book in my hands when we went off on holiday so I got into it that way with those sort of easy puzzles and then got gradually more interested in it as I grew older so you know it's all those things that you get in Christmas crackers and things like that where you have to sort of solve the puzzle them and work out what the words are so that's what really got me into it a lot of people will know the Enigma story and I know that will we will discuss that shortly but are there any codes that remained unbroken To this day. Yeah there are some fantastic ones actually and that's probably one of my favorite areas of this whole thing and in the research for doing the book it was fantastic to read about a lot of these There's this one called the Voynich Manuscript which I find really really fascinating it's this book that's been around since the middle ages and really sort of a new surface about 100 years ago and in an Italian library when someone wanted to sell it and it's this book that's full of all this really odd looking symbols. Language and some strange looking pictures of plants and unusual sort of and so Michael pictures as well and it seems to have so much information in it's about. The Middle Ages but no one has actually managed to solve much of it so far there's there's one tiny chink in it there's a guy from the University of Bedfordshire Stephen back who's written the forward to my book sort of worked out one little part of it and thinking that might lead to the whole thing being. Decrypted and I'm really excited to see what that's coming out so so there's that I'm really looking forward to seeing that coming out but there are lots of other things as well there's a place called Shug were in the Midlands where there's an inscription on a monument that the people been trying to work out for decades and they've even had this sort of code breakers try to work out what it means it's only a. Few characters long but no one's actually worked out what it actually means and I think when they do it's going to be really interesting to find out what it is about some people say it might be a message to to a loved one others say it could lead to the final resting place of the Holy Grail which would be amazing and that's really what you want you don't want just a quick short message you know I love sun so on the bottom and that was it. Really do want something groundbreaking for a story to be as a gaggle William Friedman New around the u.s. Sort of code breaking services for many years over the sort of the 2nd World War in the Cold War And you know he looked to many of these and broken codes like like sugar and the Voynich manuscript and you think you know he spends decades looking these and then to find out that it's actually just a simple p.s. To a lover and I think he'd be very very devastated by spending so much time on it but you know this is the thing with with code breaking it's a very very time consuming activity you know you have to spend a lot of time going through these codes and working out using math and things like that which you know frightened some people obviously. But you know if you do find out one of these codes must be an incredible feeling there's one called the Zodiac code which was related to a series of unsolved murders. About 440 years ago and the murder of perhaps up to 40 people had been sending these coded letters to local newspapers in the u.s. And one of the letters actually got decoded they worked out what exactly what it meant but they still couldn't work out who did send the letters in the 1st place and you know discovering who the killer of these people would be you know that's that's a real sort of holy grail for a lot of people trying to work out what those letters actually meant absolutely trying to decipher the code it's either hugely enjoyable or very very frustrating is there where you must be just be trying to I don't know but I mean people will talk about keeping mobile phones on for hours and hours but I mean if you were trying to decipher a code that must keep you up at night well you know I mean you look at what happened at Bletchley Park you mentioned there I mean you know they they threw lots of people this task you know and obviously then it wasn't just a mental feat it was just trying to trying to you know save the country and so there were thousands of people there working day and night to work out you know what was in the Enigma code for example or their lawyer inside for the one used and you know for them it was a matter of life and death and you know Churchill famously said the work that went on there shortened the war by 2 years I don't know if you actually noticed but Norfolk was was actually at the forefront of some of that effort. And if you're in have come about how so was involved so basically it was it was really at the front line of the listening into what was happening over the German air waves there were a number of why stations all around the county and there's still signs of some of these. Still remaining although they've they've long been dismantled now there were 5 around the coast in Norfolk in a place like Kramer Gholston North Walsham and. The job was to sort of psyche and all of this was traffic from the German navy and u. Boats for example and then try and decipher that and then possibly into Bletchley Park if they couldn't do it themselves and so you know that was really at the core of the the war effort in both but 1st and the 2nd World Wars and I know that. And if you're a Marine Parade in goals and you know one of the Yes you know finest grays of houses in the town they actually number 7 there was a an operational base for world maybe intelligence and that's around World War 2 which most people who don't actually realize. I'm going to play a song that is plenty I want to talk to you about this is really talking about he grew up in dear man has written a book called. The greatest codes ever invests and. Lenny Kravitz and I know that. Probably joining is only share your sit in a dram has written a book called The sorry for the greatest codes ever invented and how to break them ma we had a quick chat thereabouts about the Enigma code in Bletchley Park How many times have I ve been to Bletchley if it's me probably have many many times it's actually very close to where I live now I moved out of Norfolk 18 although my family old still live in Durham and hello to anybody who's listening in but yeah I moved to Bedford share about 12 years ago so I'm really very close to the park and we're hoping to have a launch party for the book there later this week when it comes out on the Thursday so they've got a nice push up there so it's well worth a visit for anybody who's not been to it either it's it's come come a long long way since you know the 1980 s. When it was under threat from housing developers and it was still secret at that point but now it's a fantastic museum that's also the National Museum of computing that which is fascinating for anyone who's interested in things like 980 s. Computing and you know the Sinclair Spectrum and all of that lovely and I guess because you mentioned the breaking of the Enigma code it was said that it helped shorten the 2nd World War by 2 to use that had trouble you know how true do you think that statement is. It was an incredible advance I think because it enabled the allied forces. To get access to a lot of information that they would have never of had I think I mean it's very very difficult to quantify I think but you know what they did there was was truly incredible and it was the work of a lot of different people I mean I know a lot of people talk about insuring But you know that involved many many people there's a Polish code breaker for example Mary and reject ski who who actually worked out the wiring of the original and it machine without actually ever seeing it and when Poland was was invaded that they actually came over to the u.k. And that information they came over with was was crucial then for Alan Turing and others to actually work out what was said in the Enigma codes and then what was later on in the that Iran's cipher which led to the building of the Colossus computer you know one of the 1st world's 1st computers. And even now moving forward to 2017 all of those are you saying. We have numbers that we have to put into machines to get to get money at the bank we have wife I pass codes Well what's the future for codes which is well you're right I mean we use encryption every single day we probably without ever realizing you know when anytime we visit sites on the Web You know you're using a Christian and when you put in your credit card details so you know people always have to be on top of that and this is the thing about code breaking is that it's a constant battle between the people writing the codes and then the people trying to hack those so you know people are trying to break that encryption all the time you know you see the hackers out there breaking into various databases and so we always have to sort of keep ahead of that if we want to keep our security and make sure we're safe online and all of our private details are kept private So technology companies are always looking at different ways to do that and so companies like Whatsapp that you know they've added it you know really securing Christian on their messaging apps and things like that but. You know we're moving now to even more secure methods like quantum cryptography which is very very complicated idea to get your head around but it's the idea of using you know the quantum behavior the very sort of. Very miniscule behavior of photons and things like that to try she you know send messages hidden in the photons and one in in which is actually impossible to eavesdrop on that and you know a lot of people are working on that at the moment I don't think we're quite there yet but you know it promises to give us even more security when after well we'll have to wait and say Well where does artificial intelligence come into this because I've been reading a lot about about robots cracking a lot of these codes how worried should we be about that well you know when we're at the level that we're at now it's you know it's almost impossible now for any person on their own to actually crack any of the modern codes because you just need enormous computing power to do it you know this is what's happened since the 2nd World War really and that's why the team up actually park ended up building classes because they realised that they could never do it with humans anymore so ever since then you know for the last 70 years we've we've relied on computers and as computers have got more and more powerful that's helped us you know break into more of these codes but this is the purpose of you know some of these new systems like quantum cryptography and there's something called called a one time pad as well which it in effect are unbreakable codes and even with that enormous computing power you're probably not going to be able to break those and you know I think yes there is a role for artificial intelligence there but hopefully it will be used for good rather than for the full. Marks thank you so much having a chat it's been really really good talking to decipher the greatest codes ever invented in how to break the make it sound the 2nd of November isn't it you know book. By modern books and available. Through Amazon in all good bookshops hopefully Sadly no one in Durham anymore since chambers closed but she should be able to find book shops around Norfolk that's really lovely talking Thank you so much thank you bye. Temptations and my kids coon are coming up in just a tick but the full of that we've got a little bit of a I suppose it is kind of breaking news about baking only you say King Yes a bit of a soggy bottom moment for proof leaks because thanks to social media it appears that the judge of the Great British Bake Off has announced the winner of the series of course it's the final tonight on Channel 4 but it seems as thanks to Twitter she's managed to tweet the winner she's apologized to the air she's she blames it on the fact that she's currently in Bhutan which is many many many hours ahead of us and she kind of thought that the final had already been aired. All she did in a tweet which she has now deleted because people spotted it she said she wanted all 3 finalists to win before saying bravo to one of them that everybody is now assuming is that when I shall give it away just in case you haven't you have been watching it no don't tell me what it is that I want to see anything but definitely take on face but honestly.
