This is up for not over 5 love our daughter an added coming up in this hour of the program where we're talking gangs in this situation the Britain finds its own. Some media describe it as a gang epidemic that we've got. The gangs a youth crime dominates the headlines for all sorts of reasons whether it be knife crime or gun crime or what they now call county lines once upon a time none of us knew what county lines meant but now even the prime minister and the Home Secretary and others talk about county lines as if it is part of the narrative of Britain today Well we've invited in a gangs expert for want of a better way of describing him Sheldon Thomas runs an organization called gangs line if you've got any questions for him about the state of gangs in Britain today now's the time to pick up the phone of 080-859-0969 extension 3 you kind of calls text him 18558 or Emo up all night at b.b.c. Dot com u.k. Before we get there there is one thing left to do on up all night we call it have up for nigh on a weekend without hearing from Lynn Sweet of the Chicago Sun Times about what's in the paper this morning Lynn Good morning and hello to you and I know you want to start off with a story that we've been covering as well tonight about the rapper Jesus world who has died it was a Chicago Midway Airport yes this is when I heard when I said listening to the news with her I came out and I thought Oh my goodness this death of this young rap star even is on the top all night newscasts I'm so glad that we're talking about it because it means a lot of people are interested in what is just a tragedy so Chicago rapper juice world or he's When you see it in print it's uppercase w r l t This is a 21 year old who was raised in the suburbs of Chicago. It's an incredible success story so the deal is early this morning he's And in the private plane space at Midway Airport Chicago has 2 big airports most of our listeners if they travel internationally might have heard of O'Hare but this is another big one and he had apparently cardiac arrest he had just turned 21 as I said 6 days earlier and the and this is where a local paper hopefully can really give you some details about this tragedy so emergency's crews were called at 2 am to the airport and he was pronounced dead at our medical examiner's office and his real name is Jared Anthony Higgins and there is now going to be an autopsy scheduled for the moment no one suspects file play but this is just the procedure when you die under the circumstances for Chicagoans he's a homegrown artist simple whoa what's been the response there from fans and friends about his death well there has got to be an enormous interest because it's the tap story on our our website which shows that his influence in I know this and that specialist and him in particular that I know the name it's a big loss and it's also whenever anyone this young dies so unexpectedly Of course you want to know was there anything else involved what happened and I think this story we has says that no one thinks for the moment that anyone else. You know there's there's no foul play as I said suspected and people are really just paying homage to him in when I looked at some social media before we got out but this is a big story because his music did mean a lot to a lot of people in the city who follow rep music that's exactly what I was going to test you about you know about Jews world's lyrics now I don't want it I don't want to pretend to know I know about the lyrics I know it was popular but I thought you know what should I know. Lisa dreams. I still see your shadows in my room can't say back the love that I gave to you it's to the point where I love and I hate you and I cannot change you so I must replace you he says said than done I thought you were the one listening to my heart instead of my head you found another one but I'm the better one I won't let you forget me I still see your shadows in my room. Well I read that off a screen that because I'm not from Chicago like you said it is music inside out so I've got in this case you haven't but I bet after today not just you and I. Listening will be checking out G.'s world right I mean again something it's a tragedy but I wanted to make sure I brought the story to you because I know you're interested in music and you have a what everything and and I thank you for that embarrassing me that I don't know no I suppose embarrassing myself and actually we can share in that environment anyway . People in Chicago do that old tradition that I saw I've seen in the few American movies they take his sweet give Bear and then they pull one out on the floor from the Bhosle for the deli departed to the do they do that have you seen I've never seen them not enough mad to say I've been in every bar I haven't been in every joint in the city I've never heard it discussed and what movie is that it outs is few quite a few I remember boys knew the city would not seem to remember and which one is on a gang member that today I was on the gang members there that I'm not a student Oh I was on China thank you so I am not eligible for this or not I didn't realize that was Sheldon thank you will come on and challenge Sheldon's almost everybody in a moment but thank you very quickly you'll cause this week as you do with one of the concern is for the Democratic presidential race right so Mike Bloomberg is the billionaire former mayor of New York and he is Jewish so the former marriage Chicago Rahm Emanuel also Jewish so I saw Rahm gave a speech before a journalist club called the grid iron clad about a member of it last night and he used the occasion to take some swipes at Bloomberg so he is rather is net without ambition himself though he decided not to run for a 3rd term as mayor and. There is a thought that Bloomberg is trying to buy the election because he just came in 2 weeks ago he's been spending millions are ready. As he is who has his own bed a swig or had this great mind as he's riffing and Bloomberg and this is what I talk about a bit in the column which is really about it's funny speech it's insane says Rahm It's crazy to think that America is looking for a short Jewish president really because if they were be running. It with this humor there is also the fact that America has never elected a president though Bernie Sanders is running now and Rahm had you know I think it was a very good kind of stickit poke in your eye line to Bloomberg who he gave some other pokes to along with some other company that lines about this state of the race Oh here's a good one so yesterday and we talked about Pearl Harbor Day last night so Rahm goes to starts with zinger and he says you know I'm so glad to be here on December 7th you know it's the day of infamy that will live forever or as President Trump would say it it's the day Ukraine bombed Pearl Harbor. Well that Laughing Yeah I know I said I did I get it the only thing I'm sensitive to the fact that nevertheless Pearl Harbor is a day. The memorial somewhat solemn in the United States it is and we did pay tribute and sometimes and comedy you're allowed a little license this one but you know in the comedy club with you I probably lost a bomb on the b.b.c. And I think anger on that might not go down too well to love a joke about well if it Ok so I apologize no no no no no no no let me give you another quip this one it's a little edgy So buckle up so what Rahm said about vice president Mike Pence in grade school he insisted the alphabet had $21.00 letters there was no l g b c Q Ok. Ok I got it. That was less edgy no way but yes so your column is one to be residents of the today thank you very much and by the way don't let the fact that I have to be b.b.c. Stopped restrain you from being Lynn Sweet of the Chicago Sun Times. Well good as always my pleasure thanks so much Lynn Sweet they're the Chicago Sun Times So you've already met my guest this morning because he clarified a custom to me only gang members take a swig of their beer and poor one for their dead homey as it were I didn't know that in the movie Sheldon Thomas welcomes up all night yes couldn't So yeah it's really serve Come on. Even when you were a young rapper the streets a current member you ever called me. Even back in those but I was I wasn't too not a nicer person I was too rough there you were quite a decent rapper. Very very very political as well as other things so you would insist this gangster knifing even though Island tried to get me to make correct code in them days it was cool gunmen live it and when I was signed to Island I don't record yeah they were they wanted me to kind of go down the road because obviously they knew that I was a former gang member so therefore all why don't you talk about your show in the in the insane and at the time. My mum and dad. I can explain it they they they they didn't know too much of what I was doing part of it was they were in denial I'm going to talk about later the denial of West Indian parents of what they could get up to that's one part of it and the other part of it. It was I didn't think it was good for a young black man who's just got his 1st recording deal to start talking about shooting people or what he was doing in the way that the Jamaican is were doing at the time you know. So I wanted to be more of an inspiration but I think of a bit too far ahead of my time because in them days. Not many black record you know it's we're talking politics politics I was even before Chuck d. So people need to understand how farm came back before even Chuck d. In Kara's one so before Chuck d. In care was one even. On wax I was already in political stuff way before they were even heard of so and I know that's true because I interviewed you once or twice a year yes they were you broke me actually I would say you brought me because not many people was interested remember again because it was a particular kind of politics it would take a current complaint to call a kind of report to want to go down that road and I just think that at that time we didn't have many black reporters and you was the 1st person that she said go out let me hear what this bill is talking about and so forth so how did a former gang member like yourself turn his life around and become if you like the expert on gangs in trying to get people out civic gangs that's where you are now you've got an organization it's cool gangs line isn't yes what is that organization do an ad you get from where you were once upon a time to where you are today. Well for many people a lot of people believe gangs started now when people start talking about gangs as if it's just come around now street gangs have been there for a 100 years people need to know that but in that time period it was in particular cumin is poor white communities obviously so it took in Manchester Birmingham Liverpool Sheffield not Sheffield and Glasgow Glasgow and Sheffield had the highest amount of gang related violence and at one point. Either Sheffield or Glasgow in one in 20 isn't going up to the fir is we're actually the gangster capital of the world it wasn't Chicago because a lot of people got it impression that Al Capone. You know and the gangs of Chicago and New York we've Lucky Luciano was the gang capital of the world it wasn't the gang capital of the world was in England but because America's got such big media and such Hollywood was just beginning it kind of made John Dillon job all of these people seem so big but actually the gang capital of the world Ju in that time period was Glasgow in Sheffield. And I think people need to understand that street gangs have been in existence for well over 100 years in this kind what do you define as gangs because I speak to a lot of the younger people today and they say gangs we're just a group of friends and yeah but everybody says that I mean you can understand about young people they're not honest with themselves. And young people tend to say fings because it's the in thing so for a moment you've gotta love a gang member said I we're just family where you're not you're lying you're not a family cause a Finally is a biological family not a surrogate family you can get some or get families but anyone who's a family would not tell a child to go and sold drugs so if you are family in your telling a child or your grooming a child then you are gang it's as simple as that the problem with many of the community is because the leaders in particular communities whether it be poor white communities whether it be the black community or the Asian community are. Are just as culpable of reinforcing what young people are saying by not correcting them and I think what happens is when you have leaders in these communities who are not correct in young people who are gang members then you obviously you you have this kind of thing going around where we're not a gang where we're family well if you are families don't tow people to commit crimes so a true friendly or true nuclear family would not tell a child or a person not to go to school for 2 weeks and be in a trap house so for me my definition of a gang is more than 2 people who have organized a criminal activity that is moving from a to b. And if you're doing that with more than 2 people and you're consistently doing that over a period of time then I call you a street gang now there's a big difference between street gangs and organized criminals now in the seventy's and eighty's. You had only a very few and full of small street gangs who were aligned with organized crime let me explain to you when I say organized crime organized criminals were not black kids they were not Asians they were mainly white middle aged men from Glasgow new car so Liverpool Manchester and London and obviously permanent and these guys made links with cartels So the 1st link they made was with the Colombian cartel and if anybody knows about pablum Escobar now a problem Escobar want to get his drugs empire not just in South America or North America or Canada or the Caribbean he wanted to branch into Europe in order to do that he had to form alliances with crime families in the u. K. Now. They did crime families in the u.k. As I said were middle aged white men the creature ins for example that was another plate the crate generation before here this is after was the crate twins there were not a organized criminal outfit a lot of people I know a lot of people don't. Know what I'm saying basically people have been suckered into the craze being this organized crime they were they were just a bunch of street Fugs because craze never bought drugs into the country but they were trying to strike up alliances where they know where the Mafia where my feeling with them they realized they were too small so the mafia didn't forge a link with them and what people fell into Understand the only criminal gang that we that was organized to the level I'm talking in that time period of the fifty's and sixty's was do Richard since the Richardsons were way ahead of the craze to craze were just a small outfit from East London who would extort people in different shops in different areas in Milan the order they were very small and I was yes and they were just a little bit above street gangs today and another then another thing people need to understand the reason why the Krays are seen in such light now is because they spent most of the time taking pictures with celebrities that's what street gangs do today but people a friend in to understand is that the craze murdered one person 2 to Jack McVitie And yeah. So 2 sources I stand correct to write the crime from as I'm talking about I've murdered well over 50 people and so you can't compare them to the crime families I'm talking about the atoms the Noonan's the you know what were these guys of murdered like 5 times or 20 times there are these guys and what people need to understand only reason. We ever talk about the craze is if you look at them in picture way or form they took pictures with Muhammad Ali They took pictures with the woman that used to being in a standard average wins a barber wins a date they love taking pictures of themselves they love making people believe that they were bigger than what they were they were just small fry let's not lose sight of that this is a phone and this is a phone and if you like to join in the phone and I'm particularly interested in what we can bring in the history about particular interested in what's going on on the streets today and I know Sheldon you can tell us a lot about their number to call if you were to speak to Sheldon Thomas from gangs and directly is 080-085-9096 extension 93 consecutive him 185058 or up all night b.b.c. Dog dog you what's the current state of gangs and I'm talking about street gangs now in the u.k. Shouldered Well I would say out of control I would say. Chaos I would say. Extremely violent How does it differ from my days quite simple in my days we had guns. So it meant it was harder to to get guns to go wrong kill somebody Secondly in our days. We were more controlled by the crime families so for instance in days you couldn't shoot somebody who was walking down the street with his mom today a guy sees his ops and all sorts of mops is their rival Yeah. They're used in their policy so called them pagans as well back in the day but they're called in what's today so a guy today who's in a street gang will see he's ops these rival gang and he doesn't matter whether he's with his mom is aunt or his uncle he will stab that person the person he's after and he will stab the mom if the interface where it's in days there was more moles more principles because the crime families were bringing the drugs in and they didn't want necessary attention so if you are linked to a crime from a law we were not not me personally but the ground I was in. You couldn't just go and murder somebody you had to get it sanctioned it wasn't just a oh yeah you know what I didn't like that but he looked at me funny so I'm going to go and do him something today they don't have any of those moles no principles of values so in their head if they see you and you're with your mom it doesn't matter or if they cannot find you they will come and they will find out where you live and Russia your house and it doesn't matter if you've got a dad that will take your dad out it doesn't matter if you're a grandma going to have to take your grandma or just to find you so that's the difference and what age group of people are we talking about 1314 the average age of 18 the average age of a gang member to days between for in 14 we're seeing yet where I was in my days the average age was 25 and 27 3rd says yeah you know we are talking for him what with knives and guns and yet not know a lot of guns we got to understand there were certain street gangs in Liverpool. Manchester and Sheffield Birmingham and London that carry guns certain gangs not all street gangs now you will find them to be slightly older like between the ages of $18.00 and $25.00 are most probably the guys with the guns not the younger ones they are carry knives day are the ones that are a bit more out of control so the guy was a into 25 his most probably thinking before he does anything where was that guy a guy is 11121314 he doesn't think twice one he wants to is name on the street 2 he doesn't care about odors he don't care about odors so well when I'm talking about violence I'm actually talking about age group under the age of 17 and I think sometimes people don't understand and the reason why we're stuck is because a lot of the agencies only talk about London and it's a joke the way I understood I don't understand why we talk about London as if it's to be an end all of crime the end all of crime is u.k. Problem is a problem that I go to places like Preston no one talks about Preston I go into a trap houses in Liverpool once a trap house a trap houses. A house where the older gang member would be friend I white male who has learning difficulties a white male one because they they there's no services for them and black males don't tend to have their own property I know this is going to sound like I'm stereotyping and a lot of people are going to really be upset that I've said that but a lot of black males don't they live with girls in very property where as white males are more likely to have their own property not a mortgage I'm talking about a rented property now what these gang members do it's call pretty and they will go around to different states to identify certain male figures they're not young these guys are always in between the ages of 29 to about 47 and they fall in the category of 3 things one learning difficulties 2 they have an alcohol problem 3 or they're known as Nitty s. In other words a knitty is a somebody that is a crack cocaine addict so what they would do is befriending these people pay their rent and take over the property without abusing the person so they won't they won't physically beat that person up it will be a befriending thing then what they do is they recruit young children in the area they've got the house to trap house to run to make the drug supply the drugs from not necessary supplies from the house but they will make the drugs and store the drugs in that particular house that's what they call a trap or they use is another word they use today it's called bando so. When you're talking about gangs we need to understand that it's not a London problem but it's a u.k. Problem and we've got actually more serious problems in other areas done in London if you look up to Sheffield Nottingham and we're talking not sent and meadows Doe's areas are overrun with trap houses if you look at places like where I've gone to in Liverpool Kwok Steph noice green all dealt with can when we talk about Liverpool we talk about Toxteth but no one talks about the white areas like Cook Stefano is green where gangs have been fighting for 14 years hold that thought 8085909693 it's the 1st time we've ever had if you like a gangs phoning a phone in to talk about this day of Britain with regards to the street crime that many of us describers gang violence or. Sounds an awful night at a boy this is the 1st time that we've talked about the state of Britain's street gangs on 5 live on 5 loaves of food night so we've opened up the phone lines to you this is a phone and a Monday morning quote unquote gangs phone and and that's not to celebrate gangs but to try and find out just how we've got to the state where we are in this country where. Teenagers as young as 13 or 14 are committing the most. Heinous crimes I think it's fair to say including murder down with children Thomas is here in the studio with us he runs an organization called gangs I was a website for there by the way children w w w dot gangs the Line dot com gangs Line dot com a lot of people want to saw 200-808-5909 extension 693 Tell me how how illuminating 1st was the conversation been so far did you know that the gang situation the street gang situation was as bad if you like was rife as we're hearing now from from Sheldon and was a situation where you are perhaps he can tell you what the situation is like where you live let's speak to Phil 1st of all in the Northeast Hello Phil how are. You also ways Sheldon people are just are aware of how about it is I don't want to sound too dramatic but things do go away I've you know it's just gone crazy. I think you know I mean yeah greed a money thing is that the base of a lot of it and people being so much more materialistic and wanting things you know here and now you know. What more can you say you know I was over the knife sister knife you know death certificates is well over 100 nice since the beginning of the year isn't it yeah I think something like 111 $211.00 crazy you know like by the can the next year we're up to maybe $250.00 or more you know it's like death by knife $250.00 plus Yeah in the end of the year it's not it yeah part of the presidential engine will have been killed by guns I mean it was a miniseries it was a you know seen someone was killed by gun it was last week wasn't all you know something given on a need I stop and. I was being set on fire cars being set on fire bricks but. You know whatever crazy I mean part of the problem it has been is that there's a kind of blame culture in this in this country yeah and the blame culture is it's quite simple parents are blaming government and government trying to blame each of them but what people have found to understand cause I've been involved in gangs a gang member by self and now running an organization that actually engages real gang members I have seen successive governments not take the issue on board very seriously. The beginning started with. The Labor Party. They didn't take the issue at all in fact I was told by Jack Straw and I will mention his name. That I'm over exaggerating I had a meeting with them back in 2000 where I was trying to bring to the Labor Party that we've got a gangs problem that is going to actually explode he refused to accept that because I didn't have a Ph d. At the end of my lane Ok So that was one then I went to John Reed. He kind of accepted it and came to an area with me but it took many many years before. Conduct Conservative Party decided to take some think over are saying on board which was trees or May she invited me to me in with her and in Duncan Smith and even though she invited me to me in she still didn't take 100 percent on what I was saying the part the problem we're having is that it's bad parenting as well and we've got to we've got to understand when we're dealing with young children involved in gangs or being groomed. If your child grows up. In a situation where there's no discipline there's no values there's no principles and a maybe because the mother or or the dad who's raising that child grew up in exactly the same way so the cycle wasn't broken Now this might sound a bit overboard but when you read the attachment theory the attachment fairy explains when you have a child if you don't do with your own issues that issues of that you have will come on your child and so what happens is we have men and women in this country who have many issues of their own having babies that they shouldn't be having because when it comes to raising invent can't raise them because they have not dealt with their own issues that's the attachment theory that's been in that's been there for 4050 years as well as Iraqi of needs talks about how important it is to have parents to wobble who are balanced and when I say balance that means your mentor. Your mentality has to be a certain point for you to raise a child and at the moment in Britain and I hate to say this and I some people not a lot what I'm saying is My research has uncovered that Britain. Parenting methods. I've been lost and so this is now being backed up with a report that the u.n. Wrote in 2015 and the human rights report say that children in Britain are more likely to grow up in a loveless household than anywhere else in Europe now a lot of people are not unlike that because they're going to be I love my kids but we we actually don't because loving your kids means you've got to spend time with them and this is what the u.n. Report said the u.n. Report says we spend more time at work than we do raising our children thank you for the. People who want to talk to you by the way Sheldon many of these calls tonight as we can and the Texan e-mails as well the pizza in Scotland Hello pizza I don't hire you 3 to Sheldon go ahead. Of just. You know. When I was in London she. Was like that. Process. Built from a street gangs have a taste of. Fates and everything on the face you know there's. More and next thing you got to get involved with hooligans. Kind of an organized fights on a solid afternoon last Sunday for against stuff like. That to see gritty I'm just. Saying. So of go to the who were going on stage and survivalism stage violence and and and you can enjoy it as you know of as a bit. And then you get a false confidence Oh I was a lost cause there's a Muslim element but I was also confidence and man it suck on really well organized crime and selling drugs and stuff and vision. My lady of Muslim religion went on. To sell drugs. But when I. Realized that I to make one of them and I was involved to continue. Because you really need to be quite violent if you want to be. A Christian more of the world. Stage and that was enough for me and I was in a protective people's doors for rest of the undercurrent as interesting you know the the point and the story you'd find incredible imagine jelled in it's not unique to Peter in Scotland as well the trajectory of that story from St hooliganism to football hooliganism to drug selling and to the point where you're being asked to do things that. You have to either. Commit yourself to stepping over that boundary or keep this of. Stop yourself from going quite there is it possible to get out of the jet Surely if he were to get off that. Roller coaster going downhill Yeah I mean. What he described. A couple of I.C.'s into say firm those attacks the football hooligans attached to the West Ham. And I obviously know about all the football hooligans. And a couple of them went from being football Ricans to becoming part of the crime families in Essex so I know that from a factual point of view so and what happens tends to happens to people like that I myself included is that you have to reach a certain point where def is knocking at your door before you end up thinking I don't want that in my case it was 4 guys came into a nightclub with Baloch lovers shot after me didn't didn't get me but blew the guy's head off next to me so that was my turning point that was my my thing for people of like the i c f the guys are one talking about that there's 2 particular guys I'm talking about who ended up joining the Essex crime families. The Range Rover incident had to happen something for one or a male there that I was not in 95. 4 of them. Were shot to pieces and a Range Rover in a Range Rover that's why they call it a Range Rover incident in Rotterdam it was in English it was in the u.k. So it was in the u.k. In this offense somewhere but it was in the u.k. But I don't know why that place would call Rotterdam but the point what I'm saying is this they had to go to that point and the that guy from the I.C.'s was when he realised dis is bigger than what he thought this is far worse than what because he was a tough guy it was definitely a tough guy you know but you build in order time or take in all kinds of stuff but den when that Range Rover incident happened he had to wake up and sometimes that's what has to happen. You've got Michael in East Sussex with us hello Michael. How are you through to show to join us from gangs line who free to ask the question you want. To just like to say that I don't think gang culture is just limited to cities night is filtered down into towns villages as groups of you running around I'm homeless been homeless 3 is. A couple of years ago I was walking through to about 10 o'clock at night going back to where I was going to bed down and I was attacked by about 13 fault saying young guys couldn't have been 17 or mall. And I was saying to 7 saying. Goes there as well next quality. I turn around say no you're not get that it's in me busking and I had a bit of money. And I think. It's not just in the cities and things gang culture is prevalent in small towns everywhere 100 percent I mean I was in what should be off a day. Gloucestershire. Gang culture is a u.k. Problem and that's reason why I'm here today to let the world know that gangs isn't a London problem or Burman and problem it's a u.k. Problem and unfortunately we don't have many people like myself who travelled the u.k. To see for themselves firsthand most of the workers are just in the cities so they're not also saying a lot of. Respect for their elders and not disciplined enough and not allowed to be disciplined in our case I think that that's one point but I think the biggest problem we have is absent fathers if you look at the young people involved in these crimes especially. Right in my marriage. And I understand that so some people have circumstances but the ones I am talking about where their children are in prison most of these young men you know get with partners get the girl pregnant and then move on to another go and this is what we have in a lot of problem that no one's looking at the correlation between absent fathers and criminality Now don't get me wrong I'm not suggesting every child who has an absent father is a criminal that is not true I'm only talking about pacifically the ones involved in gang culture and what I'm trying to say is that the reason what you're talking about discipline discipline come from a stability you have to have in a stable home even if your mom your father is absent if the mother doesn't have necessary support for help you know to raise that child there it's unlikely that child is going to grow up with stability with principals with values so what happens is they vent go to school and and become a nightmare for the teachers frightening teachers always asks to go to Manchester. I got some like. This. And I kind of had my team name to cycle. So 1819 year olds I met on the street trying to help me now. And then need some of these people they come from stable families you know. Ok and they just get together and they terrorize areas and come on come out so monsoonal you just broke and I don't worry I'm going to have to you. It's working class. I'm going to I'm going to answer your correct about that and I was going to get to that point. And we'll show those who are middle class families have anything to. Say things well let me explain let me explain she is bigger than anything. Like an Al. Michaels Well let me explain part of that is true what you just said there but do is why mention will show and Gloucestershire and an obviously parts of Oxford is they are middle class that's why I mentioned it and they have both parents but guess what is actually making them fall into this lifestyle the music they listen to the music of trap and drill is promoting this image of gangsta lifestyle so what happens is all these middle class kids that I've been involved in will show and in Gloucestershire and these places that there is that when I listen to music they're listening to their listening to artists who are talking about shooting people stabbing people selling drugs on Count day listening to that music and it is a well known find that when you listen to music over a certain time period as a child between the age of 20 to 25 it will condition you and change your behavior so it's not surprising when you say to me that some of the kids you have found are from middle class backgrounds or from well to do families because one of the problem is is the music they're listening to and if you're going to listen to music that promotes. But hold on a 2nd. Thing you're out. And about. Even. Listening to stuff. That 28 year old say and I like the old I would never let. You know I mean much money I you know necessarily Let's hold on a 2nd hold on a 2nd because one supported side Michel did not discuss this with you because I know that you with a mentor of rap man rap man who's the director of the film Blue story that was at the center of what was seen as some kind of gang riot when it was shown of these had the bars in Birmingham a couple weeks back and you may remember I referenced if you go back 60 years to when Blackboard Jungle was being shown in cinemas here and the theme tune to that was Rock Around The Clock by Bill Haley in the common comments that the teddy boys went crazy and started pulling out razor blades and slashing seats in cinemas and slashing each other up now 36 years or 5060 years on nobody can understand how Rock Around The Clock. Tin Pan Alley cheering that was something of a folk strode created such violence amongst people it's the hype his name is in the lyrics because these young kids are the poets to a certain extent of their generation go back 400 years and Shakespeare was writing about stabbing people up if you read the opening passage of Romeo and Juliet you might see that but nowadays of course it's the middle classes against the Roman Julia and they wouldn't dream of stabbing anybody up is it actually the lyrics or is this something hell's going on well it's a bit of both his it's definitely the lyrics without doubt but often for Batman film people need to understand gang violence will take place where the right month film was showing or not so I think people need to be a bit wary of using Ratman film as to the reason why there was a riot in a cinema when you're looking at middle class kids are going to be perceived middle class kids because we've mentioned that and particularly areas like Gloucestershire Wilshaw official places I've actually been to. Pull out of it is that when you look at the attachment theory when a child doesn't feel loved home what you think is going to happen and what people are fairly. To understand just because a family is middle class doesn't mean you love your child any better than anyone else the problem has been in the u.k. And again I refer back to the u.n. Report in 2015 middle class families are more likely to turn out kids who are I'm disciplined unruly because they are so busy climbing the corporate ladder they're so busy trying to make more money just so busy looking at the bigger house the a car that we're not talking about whether you're rich or poor we're talking about when you have a child and you spend no time with your child your child will then look for something else where and what happens with middle class kids is no different to what happens with a child from a broken home they will then attach themselves to other negative peer groups and this is what's happening will show when I was called down there that these kids were attaching themselves to negative peer groups even don't they were coming from well to do families or subjects and thank you by the way Marconi's Sussex if you like to totally showed so much from gangs lined the number to call is 85909693 chain in Liverpool says Doherty If I can just correct your guess on how gang activity is viewed in Liverpool we are well aware that our gang problem is predominately a white working class issues also generational problem with today's active members being the children of the previous generation I used to live in talk Stephan it was way safer than Norris Green tail or Croxteth I agree with him I never said otherwise Ok and this one is well from a listener who says although somebody was saying thank you to show there we go children's right my mum told me that there were gangs in each road in Liverpool as a child of a 19 thirties it was frightening leaving your road in case you bumped into another street gang gangs are nothing new as a child myself in a new chair and you had youth groups who would get into conflict with skinheads mods and Hells Angels now.
