Summit and request another extension our political correspondent is Nick what desperate times call for desperate measures but I think constitutional experts would suggest that asking the Queen to attend a European summit would probably breach the rules surrounding a constitutional monarch which is keep her out of the political arena new data suggests the world's had its hottest gene on record last month the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says the average temperature worldwide was 61.6 degrees Fahrenheit more than one and a half degrees warmer than in the 20th century Theresa May says it's not fair some parents have to return to work before their new born babies leave hospital the Prime Minister's starting a consultation on parental leave and the government plans new parents could get a week of state funded leave and pay for every week their babies in neonatal care. And listening to relaxing music before an operation could be just as good as medication a calming patient's nerves according to new research from the U.S. Health reporter is for the therapy in the trial of 150 patients half were given noise canceling headphones and played a song specifically produced to reduce anxiety blood pressure and heart rate weightless by the U.K. Band Marconi Union. Weather Center and take a look at the front pages of the papers but 1st for the sport his job Parsons thank you good morning the American J.B. Holmes leads after the 1st round of the Open golf championship he's 5 under par but it was a disappointing day for the 4 time major winner Rui McElroy as the open made its return to his local course for the 1st time in almost 70 years Asaram Karin's reports from Will Portrush after all the Favre and frenzy of the build up to Northern Ireland hosting a 1st Open Championship in 68 years by the end of day one there was little for the best of though mopes RORY McILROY to celebrate a quadruple bogey on the 1st and then a triple bogey on the last left the 30 year old saying he wanted to punch him self around of 79 has him 13 shots of the club as late of American J.B. Holmes he's the man in front on 5 under par and Shane Larry is one shot back and then there's the. As of quality players lurking on 3 under par including the world number one Brooks captain who is looking for a 5th major title and Spain's John Ramey who is looking for a 1st at the age of 16 of course Raechel 61 a poor rush those days seemed a distant memory for the player of whom so much had been expected this week I'd like to punch myself a couple of stupid mistakes understandably you know was pretty nervous on the 1st day and had a bad tee shot and. You know wasn't the ideal start but I thought I showed some resilience in the middle the Rowans you know made a couple of birdies and you know was really try and you know just fight back and I'm on my way back into the raw and into the sentiment and then I I finished off early as well so you know whenever you're your 1st or last or your combined 7 over par you know it makes it makes things very tough for you it was an awful day 2 for Tiger Woods he's admitted he's struggling physically after 7 of the past 78 I'm sore or just numb to start moving as water like and unfortunately I got Bill moves and especially under these conditions shift the golf ball and I didn't do it I didn't shape shift at all everything was left or right and 101st all over England will play New Zealand in Saturday's semi finals of the netball will come up that's off to Tracy Neville psychopathy to the group stage with a 100 percent record after a $5847.00 when a South Africa I think today was just about coming now we obviously knew the outcome would reach 7 final yesterday which was quite a mental it's a game but we just wanted to be really clinical today we wanted to a point to play some of the things really needs to work on we needed to be strong coming through that made call and obviously there are some things in defense that we don't but fair do's to South Africa they're absolutely world class team we have some absolute balls and we sell to play for South Africa will play defending champions Australia in the semi final elsewhen Northern Ireland to go through to a playoff the 9th while Scotland will finish in 11th place at best after 43 old. Draw against Trinidad and Tobago there's a huge soccer shock and Europa League qualifying is the worst side Connors Keane amounts 12 nil away at Scottish Premiership Kilmarnock 2 in a stunning 32 1st qualifying round aggregate victory manager and he Morrison is in no doubt as to the scale of the win but you're always going to be a for it after a game like that but Barcelona went to Liverpool and they will pull 14 nil that's a bigger result in Europe I'm telling you guys one of the biggest results upsets in the history of Europa League for me it's got stuck to the level of what we've achieved tonight is something quite remarkable. England's chances of regaining the women's ashes even slimmer after Australia closed a one of their Test match on 265 for 3 England need to win in Taunton to keep the series alive but bad boy bad weather is forecast for today come a do it Hizbollah an issue up so of course you have to Beijing is otherwise a loss what's the point can't control the weather we can't control the flow across one area and then what it says one hour is not necessarily what happens the next hour say we can't get it there I'm confident we were there we can control is what we're doing out in the middle and I think we did a really good job today without a lot of luck to play in that middle session of the day in all we can do is come back and be ready to do that again tomorrow champions was just Shippey knots by $28.00 runs in the opening match of the T 20 blast the also wins for Middlesex and Somerset Britton Simon Yates claimed his maiden Tour de France stage win with a victory on stage 12 current Thomas remains one minute and 12 seconds behind Ray steed as union on a Phillipe going into today's stage 13 an individual time trial also today is the women's course race looking ahead Simon Brotherton 2 races for the price of one today with the overall contenders in the top facing a race of truth against the watch over a 27 kilometer course in Po which will inevitably see time differences appear at the top end of the leaderboard Julian Alice Felipe will be the last man off just after last year's Tour when I get right Thomas who will look to take time off all the other overall contenders earlier in the day the Women's World Tour race course will be run over 5 laps of the same circuit Britain's Lizzie diagnosed as part of a high quality field that also includes Gerosa went to anime fan flew 10 Olympic and world champion an event up Reagan and Mariana Vause live far also go to hattrick to help we can move to 4th in Super League with a 46 points to 16 win over weight fuel Trinity and that's the latest from B.B.C. Sport and now for a look at the weather here's Ben Rich at the B.B.C. Weather Center good morning we've got some pretty soggy weather to come across the U.K. As we. Had 3 today some heavy bursts of rain pushing northwards accompanied by some fairly brisk winds sussed out across the south west of the country across southwest England and Wales because here we'll see outbreaks of rain moving very quickly northeast winds through the morning some pretty heavy bursts of rain actually could be the odd flash of lightning the orderable a thunder rain kid be enough to cause some localized travel to shops and certainly some really poor traveling conditions throughout the morning rush hour but it will turn a little brighter across these areas as we get into the afternoon but still some showers and then some more persistent rain into the far southwest later on now for southeast England up into the Middle East Anglian northern England across into northern Ireland here pretty much a dry start some of the sunshine but cloud quickly roll in from the south and that cloud to bring some outbreaks of heavy rains to go through the late morning and on into the afternoon I'm expecting some of that rain to get into port rush for the Gulf as we go through the afternoon turning breezy as well now for Scotland southern parts of Scotland likely to see some outbreaks or rain some of that quite heavy but not really arriving till after lunchtime that rain perhaps getting as far north as the central belt but to the north of that one or 2 showers but I think the northern half of Scotland as well see the best of the fine and dry weather through today temperatures north to south 18 to 21 degrees at the down on where they have been and then as we go through the sea evening and tonight we will see some further showers and perhaps some thunderstorms in places particularly for northern and southern Scotland and some more persistent rain moving into southern England once again as we go on insta morrow the worst of the weather will clear away to the east but they'll still be some showers left behind some of them heavy and sundry some sunny spells too Sunday dry for much of England and Wales some rain for northern Ireland and Scotland then Rich 5 life weather just before wake up to money let's take a quick look at the front pages of the papers and many of them lead on the vote by M.P.'s to stop the next prime minister from suspending parliament to force through a no deal breaks it makes euro describes the move as the 1st vote against Tory leadership contender Boris Johnson the chancellor is one of the driving forces behind. Thursday's rebellion in according to The Daily Telegraph it says Philip Hammond text fellow M.P.'s to urge them to defy the 3 line whip and vote to help block a no deal break sent and the stars warning the holiday makers of potential for potential strikes by Ryanair pilots over the summer its action by staff of the budget airline was probably pay dispute could jeopardize thousands of British holiday families going away for the summer that is morning reports on Friday the 19th of July it's now white on white up to money at $515.00 so it goes up to money at the moment but that does mean we've got time to have another look at a few of the front pages and a recap on our top stories before we get all the latest money news from Shaun and the team let's take a look at the times the timeliness the time the lead story we're going to get because they could make do to secure. Those They Smain their sports and broadcasters just start reevaluating the free to air business model or a subscription T.V. The way forward to sporting 6 S. Let us know your thoughts on that plenty to talk about in the program today a very good morning to Monique Wong senior portfolio manager. Morning how you very good thank you felt like it felt like a busy day for investors just a lots of bits of news popping up here are there things happening this is a busy time in the city at the minute Well earnings season has started in the US Lots of people watching the news headlines that come up and you know they're looking at whether the macro economic slowdown is being reflected in the numbers whether the trade spattered with it between the U.S. And China as reflected the numbers in you know guidance going forward interested in an exciting bit of news we were oblivious to this but apparently there was a 30 seconds of pace before we actually made it on air this morning so we're in you again very excited about the world of business and whatever it might be we're talking about today we apologize we're here we're we're ready now you are there aren't you Mickey. Well. I thought that was it I thought I thought it could be just you know I'm a mini my own technical problems at the moment but it was very thin light so we're going to get into all of those things that money is talking about in the world of investment that many of those having a knock on effect into our lives every single day when you see the was in the company market section the Financial Times slogan Letty's owner to buy $4000.00 pubs we will get into that but top story this morning is the world's biggest plane make a Boeing setting aside almost $5000000000.00 to compensate airlines for the grounding of the 7 $37.00 MAX this aircraft was withdrawn from service of course after those 2 crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia in the space of 5 months that left $346.00 people dead now Michel fury is in New York for us and she has been giving us an update on what's happening at $4900000000.00 will be spent compensating its customers the airlines who use or boarded the plane for the disruption both also raised how much it thinks it will cost to produce the aircraft by $1700000000.00 in the 2nd quarter and this is due to higher costs associated with producing the planes at a reduced rate. That's where were rockets with the lights from Boeing. The talk of compensation for the and lines this is isn't necessarily it's all about you know getting into areas we've heard a lot in the last few weeks the the sort of testimony of victims' families and what I would want out of this how when you look at how companies deal with the cross' How do you view Boeing handling this one so let's put it this way they've put a number on the compensation for airlines as you said the airlines that have the 737 fleet they've had to cut flights so they have to Rennes other aircraft and the crew and there's also been delays in their aircraft a livery Now this number this 5000000000 charge that's going to go going to be taken over a number of years but they'll book that you know they'll book that charge now as you pointed out they haven't put any estimates on the liabilities legal and otherwise associated with the crashes and I think that they don't know yet and analysts would like to see some kind of numbers associated with that when they do the Boeing shares were up about 2 percent in after hours trading so is just that the airline compensation that line in the sand and was within expectations now you know I think that the thing for Boeing that is key or the thing that's involving favor let me say this is a strong balance sheet and it's got a massive backlog of aircraft orders so the key to the business going forward is that a needs to get the jets flying again Now last night's announcement they basically said that the best estimate for that is 4th quarter of this year and we've seen that time line has been shifting question all those been extra fixes that they've had to do in addition to the additional In addition to the initial software just mint Plus you know there's the regulator the Federal Aviation Authority and they have to make sure they get. Right given how long it took for them to announce a grounding in the planes so I think that you know fundamentally the story is getting the Jets back in the air but doing that safely and that is you know that's the $1000000000.00 question for Boeing is there I think on air it's now study this week that I've got 50 of those 737 mixes on older and they expected a shortfall of $5000000.00 passengers this year whether those 2 are linked I'm not sure but clearly in that direction I think it's very much linked to there's delays in the not effect from Boeing not being able to provide them and that's how it has starts to have an effect on either the flights the paper book or you know you gathering craft all of that so we will see how how Boeing continues to attempt to deal with this doesn't feel like that will be the end of the matter for them later in the program we're going to be having a big look at the world of pay per view and free to air because in the last week Mickey has been a plethora of spore on the telly all of it brilliant last Sunday for instance next Sunday into war in. Europe by a big flicking between the with one of the greatest ever Wimbledon finals guaranteed free to air every year British Grand Prix British Grand Prix some times well British Grand Prix we generally get on T.V. But not the whole of the Formula One season necessarily these days then you've got out of nowhere almost a work of cricket final only decided days before that it would be on Channel 4 and a more for for a little bit and any sort of puts into question Mickey at what point do sports take that money from you know the likes of sky and Beatty who have put money into sport and done a fantastic job with it and produced a fantastic product but the sacrifice of the viewing figures Yeah and you know years ago the family was sit around and watch the F.A. Cup final. On terrestrial television these days you know it's not always guaranteed that's going to be the case but woke up was a classic instance in $66.00 since then of course things get moved around and while sport is enjoying big benefits of big bucks coming in from television rights you can help finance the sport find some songs loses out and actually on that small list of the crown jewels as it's called said This way the government have announced that they're going to have a review of the crown jewels what should be guaranteed free to wear you know the F.A. Cup in the World Cup final one of the 2 of the very few things that are on those Crown Jewels list but other than that it doesn't go that much deeper than football you've got then the netball on this way can all of a sudden you see these world class athletes on T.V. Every evening at the top of their game and you wonder is that a longer term thing is they've done a real lucrative deal with Scar I over the next few years for the for their the leagues around the world in the international games that so we'll be talking to a variety of people from the world of sport we've got Claire Nelson who's the chief executive of netball Scotland as well she would have had a big involvement with the World Cup at the minute that still has got and they've got Paul Smith who's from De Montfort University an expert a doctor in this field of finance behind sports and as well we've got the man who made money out of the Barmy Army my hair the various cricket matches he turned that into a business so I'd like to hear your thoughts at what point for your sport you may have a sport you may be involved at the grassroots You may just like playing something go to work village cricket whatever it might be what point should you move away from free to air and start taking a bit more of a bigger book from the bigger players who can fork out a little bit more but smaller audience because let's not at 5 o 5 I hash tag wake up to money because one thing that is just making all the papers in one way or another this morning is government actions whatever they might be or ministers actions so for the. A national times Tory rebels check Johnson threat to force 3 no deal breaks it Boris Johnson's threats at Tate Britain the deal suffered a setback yesterday 40 Tory Party rebels including the chancellor Philip Hammond mobilized to block at least 3 government ministers involved in that bloc in and it's crazy a bit of a stink certainly amongst other conservatives and something else that created a bit of a stink amongst those who would be very happy to leave the European Union with a deal this weekend is the office a bunch of budget responsibilities figures yesterday and I'm actually the chancellor Philip Hammond here abstained but you know in the seconds that says very much a rebel he said that this report from the O.B. Ah which at base its forecasts of the figures from the International Monetary Fund said no deal breaks it would lead to the U.K. Economy contract in next year by 2 percent he said this shows the dangers of no deal. We are is clear that in that less benign version of no deal the hit would be much greater the impact would be much harder the recession would be bigger so I greatly fear the impact on our economy and our public finances of the kind of no deal breaks it that is realistically being discussed now meanwhile Macie said talk about public finances front of the Times today looking to get a fall off May gives 2000000000 pound rise to public sector workers well it is a new money or is a target out from somewhere else which is what I often do in a diner and. You know the focus that is notoriously difficult economic forecast in if you look back at some of their track record not just the O.B. Aba a lot of organizations they do get out politically wrong the trouble is it's always dressed up to the public as gospel. I've said it you better believe it and with the various sort of extremities of no deal with. We don't know what no deal warmings out in the detail at the Office of Budget Responsibility saying the public finances would take a $30000000000.00 pound hit and they say even a relatively benign no do exit the country with the country heading into recession so if you don't know what the deal is yet if there is a dale at all yet the complications arise but not positive talk from the Office of Budget Responsibility yesterday and in else in the papers Mickey. The the Telegraph late which is of interest to me is 3000000000 pounds troup will call Simon pubs This is basically a specialist C.D.R. Capital as my the 3000000000 pound sweep on. I was known as enterprising with a big 2 enterprise punch taverns it's got 4000 pubs it's not a publican in the true sense it was a property company and a story that's probably what the problem is with the pubs in this country now the why the structure is but. Lined up with slag unless is the company made this offer Nichols's nachas I says this will lead to further pub closures money is the one that is on your radar in terms of how the world of of beer and pubs and food and restaurants how it's sort of sorting itself out at the minute. Well it is on my personal radar. As a more pubs to go well I mean there could be some consolidation there but this is a small company you know it's market capitalization of the group and Prize in about 1250000000 the stock that rise last noise about on the news yesterday at about 38 percent it's not a particularly cheap stock is trading at about 30 times earnings which is the common metric that we look at so it's very difficult to see how much more that can go up money while we got you on we talked a lot about I saw the retailer and the company says that fully a profit to be impacted by 47000000 pounds of transition costs related to ongoing problems with these whereas facilities in the U.S. And Europe sounds to me as I think what's new where as is and sticking a lot psychology in there and it's costing a lot dosh is there I mean all right it's not and it's not to do with lack of sales it has to do with operational issues as you point out to do with warehouse logistics Now when you run a warehouse you have to make sure that you've got enough inventory to meet demand you have to get your distribution right they haven't got it quite right and it's imperative in the competitive landscape of fast fashion online retailing so they had a profit warning for the rest of the year and the stock is down 23 percent and retail sales numbers as well goods I mean it's good to get some some positive use in the retail sectors near you absolutely right so the retail sales numbers so one percent bounce in June which is good news after a week couple of months now early in the week we did get the labor market shows that the consumer in the U.K. Is in a good place people have jobs wages are rising and they're rising faster than inflation so the ability to spend it's there whether people want to do that now breaks it probably has some impact. In the for example we heard from various travel companies . Many people are putting off booking their summer holidays because they want to see what happens with break said but Easyjet reported a surgeon business story on holiday booking so travelers are finally getting around to doing so OK Money was a lot more to cramming so I will leave it emanate one man from from Coach thanks Monique let us know your thoughts from lots of people getting in touch about I've been slapped on the wrist Mickey for the same for free to air because there's a license fee involved discourse you know just to have a television or touchy subject at the moment and it's not necessarily free to air doesn't mean broadcast on the B.B.C. Either it just means. Television But you know we may use that term just in comparison to the extra subscriptions that you might need to buy beyond the license fee that you need to pay to have a T.V. And be able to watch those terrestrial channels let us know your thoughts how should sport be funded when it comes to where it's broadcast 85 or 5 I asked tag wake up to money from digital B.B.C. Census just last week. This is B.B.C. Radio 5 Live it's just after half past 5 It's Friday morning the 19th of July and there was a few headlines Pulkit 14 people been injured in what's being described as a horrendous car crash in Hartford chair 12 people were taken to hospital after reports a group of people standing at the side of the road were hit during a commie in Stephen H. The government said to commit 2000000000 pounds to pay rises for public sector workers according to The Times teachers police officers and soldiers will see their salaries increase and one of treason maze final acts as prime minister Boeing's taking an almost $5000000000.00 hit to cover the cost of grounding 737 MAX aircraft all following 2 crashes the charge is set to wipe out profits when the world's biggest plane make it shares its quarterly results next week and the residential landlords association is warning the government against plans to make it harder for them to kick out their tenants the government says it wants to give renters more law. Term security that is the 5 Live news now here's Nick with a sport RORY McILROY suffered a nightmare 1st ran at Royal Portrush as his hopes of a home win in the open were left in tatters a quadruple bogey on the 1st in a triple bogey on the last saw him finish on 8 over par Tiger Woods admitted he was struggling physically he ended the day on 7 over the American J.B. Holmes leads the field he's one shot clear on 5 under and then set up a semi final meeting with New Zealand at the netball World Cup that sank to their $5847.00 whenever South Africa in their final group match Northern Ireland beat Barbados to get through to a player for 9 for Scott Moore finished 11th place a best after 8430 draw against Trinidad and Tobago as a huge shock in Europe League qualifying as Welsh side Connors key no match 12 nil away at Scottish Premiership kill Monaco and then a 1st qualifying round 32 aggregate victory England's chances of regaining the women's ashes are even slimmer after Australia closed a one of their Test match from 265 to 3 and will need to win to keep the series alive for bad weather is forecast for today jumpiness was to share but not by 28 runs in their opening match of the T 20 blast the are also in some Middlesex and Somerset but in Simon Yates claimed his maiden Tour de France stage victory at sporting stage 12 and then far all scored a hat trick to help with a move to 4th in Super League as with a 4616 when of Wakefield Trinity the Open Championship you couldn't hope for better conditions into this week goes with a lovely sound that was also all this championship returns to royal hall brought down on his knees warning the call to disappear any television moments to happen here in the Open Championship to be crowned champion golfer Elaine Clara Joe These are the moments that make the major championship match for some shortfalls all over the place we'll keep you up to date with the Open Championship live from Royal Portrush coverage continues today since here on B.B.C. Radio 5 Live solace in using the B.B.C. Sounds that way because the money business of schools which surely fairings and I make you Clark as well now England won the cricket World Cup but would it have been . As much of a sensation if the final had been only on I.T.V. The investments God has put into the guy has probably helped us get to the point we were at last not lifted the trophy then this special welcome to many business of sport going to be looking at when it's better for a sport to take the big bucks from channels like Sky and Beatty and when they're better off getting on to free to air T.V. Getting more viewers the debate has come just as the government has launched the 1st review in a decade of which big sporting events have to be shown live on terrestrial T.V. The Paralympics is in but no sign of cricket and of course you can join in keep the conversation going hash tag wake of the money we'd love to know all of your thoughts we've already had a few people get in touch conversation started on social media a little bit earlier Anthony saying using the hashtag wake up to many such a tough question nowadays free to air so powerful for engagement and participation subscription pays for elite sports professionals the ultimate catch 22 situation where the probable best bet is a hybrid of the 2 significantly biased toward subscription of the Get in touch saying you know reminding us when we came in don't blame when we talk about protecting the crown jewels and free to air remind everybody that we have to pay the T.V. License it's not fully free is it but when I'm driven Southport says the only formula one race broadcasting live on free to every Silverstone the viewing figures always far higher on terrestrial T.V. Which has got to be better for fans on the sport got to be a better model than paying for a subscription which produces far less viewers last year I paid $150.00 pounds to stream Formula One this year it rose to $200.00 pounds might not bother if it goes up again that's the game isn't it that plane is making how high can you push those costs Well that's right but if you look at Premier League football these days so much money has been spent on players in transfers 20 years ago that would have been possible if so much money coming in from the broadcast Iraq's bts. Let's say hello to Dr Paul Smith senior lecturer in media and communication at De Montfort University morning Paul Newman which would you prefer Paul or Dr Paul Stanley good backs or feel a little bit better of those who that go Ph D.'s and I say vase We've also got Claire Nelson who's the chief executive of netball Scotland morning tea Clare Good morning appreciate you joining us has been I imagine it's been a one of the busier weeks of of the year of your career Yeah I think I've been in Liverpool for about 11 days now working on about 17 hour days and we had a disappointing result last night so it's been a a long night yes but there are positives to take away which we will get into many positives for the sport of netball as well the World Cup ongoing lately if the next few days foreign or on Sunday we'll be talking about a variety of sports so if you want to get in touch let us know your thoughts hashtag wake up someone and we will portray them over the rest of the program but let's just start off with this great sporting moment from Sunday it's come to this is the I'll speak. Of the World Cup final it is clear to my intellect side we're going to come back for the sake of the 3 was picked up the food security beside me she was teaching was to take was a break way to do things guy was the president was devastated because it was history. I think he was thinking. And I was just an Agnew of course on B.B.C. Test Match Special radio and I've got to start. Yeah just it's arrow all again sort of send you back to those few moments doesn't it Sunday that on on radio of course for the last 14 years cricket has been exclusively live on pay T.V. Channels when it comes to broadcasting on the telly boxes including guess sky and BT Sport This limits the number of people of course who can watch it to those who pay for it now for Sunday's final it was shown on Channel 4 sky are loud it to be broadcast there nearly 5000000 people ended up watching it with around 3 and a half 1000000 watching through Sky is channel so still a big figure watching through Sky channels earlier this week the director of the England Wales Cricket Board actually just told the B.B.C. The investment that they'd had through paid subscriptions over those last 14 years had been instrumental in England success no mistake about this leave investment scar I have put into the game has probably helped us get to the point we were at last not lifting the trophy really out that has a stance a really interesting point as we had John Major on the program the other day with regretting that it wasn't on Tressel television as a youth you would say to him and to others look without the money from Sky we wouldn't have been in a position to win the World Cup was as simple as that is quite possible here you know the investment is come into the game and right through the game from grassroots upwards in the professional game has allowed us to do what we've done and you know that that decision or the option was open 15 years ago plus perhaps. Unscarred to get on and they've been fantastic support of the game since that was actually directing in Wales Cricket Board talking to on the Today programme it's just a web now certain big events are protected these these crime jewels that we talk about it's not the official term but it's an easy one to use isn't it and they have to be shown by law on free to air channels Now yesterday the government launched its 1st review in 10 years. Which event should be included and Mickey we're not giving you any music or anything with a long list of the Rundown. What if we got the Minute Well these these this is the list of events that have been shown live are there on B.B.C. I.T.V. Channel 4 channel 5 to rest to in other words a limpet games men's World Cup European football championships F.A. Cup final Scottish Cup Final in Scotland Grand National Darby Wimbledon finals Challenge Cup final Rugby World Cup final. So that's at the minute and then yeah the government said yes it wants to add the Paralympics and the women's football where fi and World Cup finals this but notably cricket is not on those lists so there we are all that excitement about the cricket popped up on T.V. Last week but it's still not potentially on those list post myth from De Montfort University where when you look in the detail around this and you crunch the numbers can you come up with a figure or a conclusion for cricket about which is better given all the all the time that we've had subscribed and having it on terrestrial. Oh if only I could I think. The quick to vote his superior he came to hear about the unfortunate is not quite so simple I mean you can really see how torn really the creator poets must be in terms of the kind of balancing act that they have to perform be between gaining extra revenue from Sky and the exposure that's obviously offered by terrestrial So just to give you some sense of the uplift in finance that he created through far as he's received when we went to pay T.V. In the 1990 S. . When the cricket we've been shown on free to a T.V. . Cricket was receiving about $15000000.00 pounds per annum then when it went to pay T.V. After the kind of iconic 2005 Ashes C.V. Situation we remember the price that the price of the rights increased a 1000000 pounds per annum that's a massive increase in the current deal that is in operation to the end of this season the E.C.B. Saving about $75000000.00 pounds if you insist take that increase on $50000000.00 pounds a year in the mid 9092 now 75000000000 but you can understand how comes. Saying that clip that we just heard is going to infuse so much about that extra revenue that goes into the game that they can invest in in the counties as starters keep in all the different counties across the country going which is no mean feat or the investment in grassroots and so it investment I mean we've seen with the world over the weeks the number of people involved in England cricket team from side to specialists to the physio is you know the huge on to us that now go to a top level sports into that huge amount of 18 years increase it gets even better in terms of financial terms for the E.C.B. . Going forward because the next 20202024. Weeks or 4 it is going to see from maybe from Skype from the B.B.C. As well. So she's going to be receiving $220.00 pounds Pratham says huge financial market up there on the negative side you have got that if the. Lead not far less exposure on T.V. So huge drop in. Since. 2005 of course that's that's the that's the debate isn't it and where Nelson chief executive of netball Scotland the sport of netball it is a really interesting case at the minute because do you look at what's happened with cricket would you would you say See the example there over a long period of time and is that what would have helped contribute to the netball sector industry if you want to call it coming to some agreement thinking maybe subscription is a way for us to pay T.V. So we're coming at this from a completely different angle because in my sport so we have a Sky Sports televised slate the vitality Napoles the plaguy think it's been televised since 2006 on Sky We do not get any money from Sky to do that in fact we have to pay production costs so far as for me having a sky sports logo across the team helps me to try and attract some investors into and to bring some commercial sponsors then because I have to run a semi pro club it's completely commercially funded and in a world where women sport is currently getting less than one percent of total sports sponsorship investment that's the real challenge so for us we're in a really interesting time because that chill a what's being evidence is that there is an increased interest in an appetite. For us sport I know from the net but World Cup There is a partnership between B.B.C. And Sky it's been shown across multiple platforms every single game some of the numbers the been astounding and there have been more people changing into them netball games than Premiership football games I know that the Commonwealth Games gold what medal winning moment reached 1500000 people on the B.B.C. And that was that for him in the morning and the Commonwealth Games netball back in 2014 reached 5000000 so how do we as the sport is trying to transition into professionalism that is really underfunded under-resourced and often run by volunteers transition because as Ashley Giles said he was actually at the night before yesterday the investment into the sport is absolutely critical to the growth of the game so we need more eyeballs on us and free to air B.B.C. Channels absolutely critical to that we get our biggest audience is that but I want to see that shift that actually women sport in particular netball at this moment in time starts to get invested in as male sports does. Expose. To the devil of big money because I think the one thing we all agree is that any sport to flourish needs to constant stream of youngsters coming through if I can't say. The same as everyone else on Sally vision then they're not going to get inspired I think that that's a very strong line of argument I think it's very difficult to give against that. Whole host of books organizations have been attracted by the huge financial gains that they can unite by selling no rights exclusively to sky but I say that what you have to think about is that for every difference full and you know if it's going to sporting governing body have a kind of. Different dynamics and make so that I mean if you say for a Premier League football and they're quite easily able to sell their rights to Sky and BT put them behind a wall but they know that because of the popularity of football that's not really going to be a problem in terms of. The visibility of the sport in terms of their long term popularity that's so deeply ingrained too weighty whereas for us folks like netball that we've heard about like cricket of course but this was as well like golf and tennis perhaps as well in those kind of 2nd if you like sports then the exposure offered by free to air lane or not. Be far more beneficial for sport and taking the kind of immediate financial boost that's available from doing an exclusive deal with pay T.V. Or twice a night sky but is interest in yet you said that because Clay you know you mentioned that on the face of it you see netball and you see the sky sports branding and you think oh you know netball must be getting a decent bit of money there so other but you said actually you know Viber has been paying for the productions costs so why has that been the case is that because terrestrial T.V. Provided you know baby say really haven't been willing to put that on over the is yet you know sky has been a great partner to see play good but they don't show all. Matches every single week and that's been really frustrating for our. For funds the north says but you know that's all that's been available to us this definitely shift that's happening now and I know that we're going to be in a great position to start to negotiate more coverage of our sport and that's that's the reality of it because when you have a World Cup where you have a Commonwealth Games it does you see this by can interest in other sports multiple events you know the cricket you see the spikes and then it disappears and it goes back to normal coverage of largely dominated football so we have to look how we can ensure that we maintain coverage but the challenges as well is so for example when we have a Sky broadcast game we need it costs us more cost me we have a franchise sirens it costs me more to be able to put on the production to bring the stuff in to lay the call to have a different call to put that on and then you what you find as well is sometimes people don't buy tickets because they think they can watch it at home so we've really got to figure out what this balance is in order to grow our sport because sometimes the increased visibility actually does not deliver the commercial games for us is that the same for England in Australia as well you know being in the Australian New Zealand South Africa and in the semifinals this weekend would not be the same for those countries. Well in terms of the domestic league so the Super League that I play in is the English only excited by Teletoon Apple sleepily because a English teams one Welsh one Scottish so we're all in the ice on the board and we will be looking to renegotiate. Broadcast deals I think it's as of next year and there is a huge appetite to show more Australia however have huge broadcast deals they all really leading the way in terms of women's sport the domestic league is why. Well indorsed huge sponsorships and their broadcasts right and they can they can charge significant sums of money for that's why we need to get to that's the best league in the world with some way off for that but that has to be where we need to get to here in the U.K. Because otherwise the growth of our sport is limited have a lot of people going in search on this topic Marie says Sky Sports Too expensive for us but if they have the price it would creep quadruple the sales so everyone would benefit Mickey the world of Netflix and Amazon Prime and paying $678910.00 pounds a month instead of what people save the sky sports package over the years as being $3040.00 but you end up sometimes with a bill of pushing $100.00 by the time you signed up to push your ball in a more comprehensive range of goods Yeah every But only one package any sort of change the mentality a little bit I think about what people are willing to pay month I mean you can buy separately of course or scarred for the sports yeah depending on their much you have but for a lot of people it does push other exclusive duds. Subscription for spall. Want the films you know widget was end Well that's true where does it end cricket missed a chance with a T 20 blast says Jonny on social media using the hashtag wake up to money he says by giving Sky exclusive rights when there are more games they could ever possibly cover even one game away come free to air would have given huge visibility for no great loss to Sky opportunity sadly missed. The saying if you could watch any sport on pipe of you would be happy too but the book won't subscribe while most of the money goes to football that's interested in see where the balance of the money goes we have some fans of the net will welcome the vitality network up going on at the minute in Liverpool final this weekend is brilliant if there are any tickets available I recommend you go went along on Monday really changed my attitude to seeing a sport like netball live it's quite quite incredible we are some of the fans there how much different it makes on the interest in. As you hear lots of comparisons with the Cricket World Cup but the cricket Well come on in this country it was so sad that we didn't get to see anything over until the final so great that it was you know passed over from Sky and the netball World Cup and it got into that since the baby sea picked up on cheese day I think it was such a shame that it's not I think not everybody can afford the Sky package especially you know getting children involved with early on I think when you have things like the lympics and you see lots of sports you don't normally see all know moved to television you know and I think it gets people interested in different schools as well so yeah it's not unity I don't think it be. Because it was a really accessible sport for all of all wages and if they could see on T.V. That they might want to come and play and there we could just sport the day that well what about other sports that maybe are not so interested on if they were in OWN free to add T.V. Jackie need your interest Oh yeah definitely like the Cricket World Cup this this week oversee a conversation about whether it should be free to air all Sky Sports I don't really watch cricket I watch that absolutely loved it so I think it's definitely frita. Chief executive nipple Scotland Club think about hearing those people who were hit me when I went along on Monday and I watched the game in a Scotland game. I was in the vast minority of being attending it was it felt like maybe 90 percent of people there are women women who are engaging with top level sport is that part of your pitch to investors Oh absolutely and why would it not pay you know women of the most powerful consumers and decision makers in the home and it's a huge huge audience that you want to be engaging with and that for me is what I pitched to sponsors I think you know what's the fact that you've got so many women coming to watch a sports event as well I mean that's a game changer and it's something we really need to be pushing moving forward we need to be a little bit creative as well because we also need to consider how women consume sports and a lot for me needs to be looked at more creative ways perhaps streaming you know we streamed out World Cup qualifiers from Perth last year it reached millions the world Usenet will champs imports Juana was streamed it reached millions and so when everybody's got a phone in their hand we're looking at you know traditional back pages of the newspapers and not really read by women are they going on to Sky sports channels what else can we do to reach new audiences and that can still be commercial benefits from looking at streaming after news so the fans clearly very crucial netball World Cup and you can do so lots of people get in touch who often means who have the money somewhere not very much maybe but they are willing to spend some money on sport but how do they spend it have so much time and energy support teams so how much are they expected to give to follow sport and T.V. It's a question that came up a lot in the Cricket World Cup didn't it which is only available on telly through a scar subscription I can except for the final is a lifelong cricket fan he's the co-founder of the Barmy Army which you always hear making a racket somewhere in the background whether it's radio or T.V. And I think I even managed to turn into. A business proposition pole morning tea Good morning Bonnie Amit What is it like a Limited Company or something now have to take the gloss off the glamour that we see on the telly here always has been as it was trademarks back and 94 for I think something. Like Joey. And we've been traveling more thing than one condition A for many many it's 25th year this year I mean members are there in the bounty on because we keep hearing about you know every tour and I'm never quite sure at Piggy's. With social media across platforms. For and. Then the actual 1st class membership of the past subscription every year which is basically between $35.40 pounds depending whether. Or not nearly 3000 double A. And then a club 12 membership of people that just get regular news let's says nearly $40000.00 that's the price at least the numbers across the various ways of doing the bombing. That's interesting and so that's another bit of money that fans are spending when you're traveling the world poll and have done in particular the last 14 years as the topic of whether it should be on terrestrial telly all should we take the sky money among From a fan's perspective is that come up only every night. What what what what is it divided is it does it go one way is to fall I didn't I think the compromise is always a sign you know you need to score money and I have spent it well and that's the numbers that Paul came up with 74000000 I think up to 220 that that's really exciting I didn't realize there was that much more coming in but I think you know the compromise is surely day that you've got the Sky package that people can buy into it but you've got to advertise it on free for air and if you do that you'll get more people falling in love with the game of cricket which I would if I watch it basically the guy on Sunday which undoubtedly is the best finish to it I'm a quick of it to say in 25 years and I think everybody every pundit I'm hearing is saying it's the most amazing finish that's right you think you're going to say isn't it but also the signs I'm sorry you had that yet now it's gone from 3 and we would in on the saying same time so did we get exactly what we could. You know with the amazing things that was I'm not so sure is there an opportunity coming up through the ashes across Asian and hopefully sky I can make a big deal for can top told you that you think that cricket is more fiscally responsible for all this money that's flowing in from the television rights than football where they quietly go out and spend 35000000 pounds on what is basically an employee I think definitely I think there's more responsibility I'm across the world as well so they are always. You know talking to other countries in trying to keep the game going where it's not so easy for those countries because it seems the play is going to. So I think they are definitely more responsible across the board the I.C.C. And some amazing job with the world. Being so impressed with the way it's being run . Just 20 years ago 19 months in arms a lot of mistakes made in more pain and they seem to pick up on I think the solution to this. To discuss every now and so is it means a lot. Thousands of pounds to go I. Wonder why they aren't getting that quite right as well as whole part the product Paula. Thank you very much for joining us this morning Paul Burnham the co-founder of the Barmy Army thanks as well to Dr Paul Smith from Des Moines for university city election media and communication thanks to Claire Nelson chief executive netball Scotland congratulations this way clear for the sport if anything I know you had a tough night for Scotland last night but it's been a great wake and hopefully that continues thank you to everybody is going to take a back grass roots somebody mentioned in swimming as well we'll get into that next time that's it from Wake up to money breakfast up next Yeah thanks very much to our friends and colleagues at 5 life to keep us company overnight but your day is about to begin here on B.B.C.
