Radio. Thank you Jess it's 5 past 6 welcome into Merseyside sport for a Wednesday evening with me Paul songs and tonight I'm in conversation with a man who plays football north of the border and did England trading to the UN Phil turf as well as former Liverpool Wayne got more Walters markers Joining me to talk about his recently published autobiography it's called the Mark Walters story we'll hear about his time growing up in his native Birmingham and pulling on the shirt of the club he supported since childhood Aston Villa will chat about his time and I brought what he wants 3 league titles with running just before following Graham soon as to Merseyside to sign. For the Reds in the summer of 1991 the have some memorable moments in the show so lovable as well scoring that goal against Auxerre the strike that ended Manchester United's title hopes will reflect on the F.A. Cup and League Cup triumphs well with the club as well. And I'm delighted to say that Mark joins us from our studios in Birmingham evening Mark good evening very good thank you and thanks very much for coming on and talking to us about the book I mean 1st things 1st thanks for having me and thanks how enjoyable was it to put all your experiences down on paper it was it was fantastic she was very cathartic for me and I didn't realise how much. Lost both life experiences are kind of suppressed and not really spoke about you know you know it's men's particular footballers you don't like talking about things and probably needed counsel in a time when hope were to be very it's been a great process for me and I really enjoyed it actually did you always intend to write a book or did it sort of happen by accident how did it come about. Not bad books even when I was at Glasgow Rangers someone asked me to write a book even while I was still playing for them and I just never been that type of just been a very. Introverted very quiet person as I had my teammates particularly in my early days will verify but much more football did bring that Michelle a little bit and I suppose at the end of a crowd I could definitely not say I was an introvert but just not the kind of thing I would do really you know I enjoyed being a footballer if you like and enjoyed the lifestyle if you like but I was just never the type to Briley be. Going around and making a noise and been caught in the public eye Yeah I mean the thing with writing a book is what I would always find quite daunting is remembering everything I mean with the memories come flooding back or do you really have to think about it. I can assure the next football it is some memories you just don't forget you know I mean it's of things you just don't forget and you know the camaraderie and all of the things that we do together and all those things are just you know as I say on forgettable and this dates and stuff which. Are forgotten about but my. The guy who write the book he very good at research and just checked on the dates and so forth and got to think spot on because of that but yeah there's some things that you know the passage of time you do forget about but you know big moments in your in your football career and your life you obviously don't forget and you know just looking through the book at the halftone Graham soon as I write in the forward in your book I would imagine he played a massive part in your career didn't he well actually hear from take him away from from Aston Villa which was as you know my boyhood team and I loved it to death and even at the time I think the play people there didn't never thought I'd leave because it was such a touch to the club but he made it sold a raise to me and realized that you know the word there was life after Aston Villa it was a you know there's a lot of clubs out there that could do what I hoped Aston Villa could do for me so yeah we have a lot of respect and a lot of. Thank you for yes he says that your nickname was flash. Tell me about how that how did that make. You know a lot of people would think because you're a snappy dresser or something like that. I can assure you my dress sense was a lot to be desired even then so it's got worse as a golden butter now you know I think was just a case of I think some new new newspaper said the black flash or something like that and I think you know you just get cotton on to that as it was and he did call me flash quite a lot yeah you know the players consternation Yeah I think you're being slightly modest I'll read what he says he says his teammates also knew that worth because when things were tight he would come up with a bit of individual magic and winners of the game hence the reason they nicknamed him flash Yes he was that special from I mean I can't relate to this because I was never that good at football but from a player like Graham soon as I know he's unmanageable when you look at his playing career that must mean a lot to you that you're being praised by such a great player. Yeah and I'm going to show you give me the odd rollicking as well so it went both ways but yeah obviously I was a big admirer of him as one of my playing against him as a 17 year old when I was asked to Villa and he's big thighs and soulful funny just used to maraud around the pitch passing spraying a ball out and smashing players when he had to so I was going to get my music as a player so when he asked me to come up in and speak to Glasgow Rangers which I knew a little bit about what not a lot. You know you can't you couldn't turn him down and I went up there and when I saw the club and you know you walk through the marble halls there in the history that the club has which probably a lot of English clubs and players and teams don't realise you know you have to listen to what I've got to say and as a set of time it all worked out well the English clubs were banned out of Europe and you just a great time to be there and thankfully I listened to him and took a chance and signed Yeah I'm going to come onto your time at Rangers in a 2nd just on Graham soon as one when you look back at his managerial career because you know he played such a part in it do you think he's actually more remembered for his time at Liverpool rather than all the good things he did at ranges. Yes possible because I think he never seem a few mistakes. As we all do and unfortunately he broke up the team a little too maybe to stay too soon if you like to give me some self whereas at Rangers when he did that I mean we virtually at the bottom of things and there's a lot to fix whereas at Liverpool there wasn't that much to fix it may be maybe. Maybe change things a bit too much so that's possible but. You know I know any of us we can be very it could be very abrasive as well with his managerial style which upset few people at Liverpool but you know although there was a lot to change a lot of big characters and if these big characters weren't put in their place if you like then maybe things could have been worse yeah we have a scad of him and he's quite scary characters and well as I say as can be abrasive and the biggest situation remembers when Graham Roberts just signed a new contract I think a 5 year contract and solve say things are going well for him and there's a problem in the game which Graham stupidly disputed and. Graham soon as you said to him it doesn't feel good stuff and get going and I can honestly say I never saw him again at a club so when you can be that authoritative and and strict if you like then you know you can you know you miss a minute with him then you know is only one winner so it does sent a message to the rest of the players and I don't see anybody. You know dispute ANY think again frankly no. But you know there's a good side to me as a NEW stuff you know tactic Lou always good and as I said long as you're given 2 percent all the best you could anyway never a problem with him I Are we were reminiscing in the office actually the other day when I knew was doing this interview with him about how much we love that Rangers team that you were in when I realized the names that you played along side alley McCoist Hateley butcher Richard Gough travesty even Chris Woods the list goes on how exciting was it to play in that same. It was a fast pass it for me because you remember I was an Aston Villa where we had a great start to my career I mean although I was involved in the win in the league and the European Cup you know being around a club a time was fantastic and the 1st 3 years you know we did want to lead the European Cup in a Super Cup so I thought it was normal you know normal things that you go along so after the next 3 years being less successful I was really disappointed and then tonight then to be involved and to play alongside great players like you just mentioned I just knew I was going to become a better player myself training with these guys watching the way they. You know prepared for matches you know the lifestyle the lead I just knew was going to help me to become a better player which I in my opinion it did definitely did you think Rangers should have done better in Europe I mean I have memories of the Battle of Britain against Leeds and I know you'd laugh by it now and part reading off those names Rangers could have probably competed in the European Cup come night I would add that I mean you can remember the teams that did be as did go on to win the league in the Champions League so I wasn't exactly you know terrible teams up B.S. To go got to carry on so. Obviously it's it's a cup for Cup football and it's a lot of luck involved even in Champions League games in May We didn't have the Robert Green but as I say they remember these teams that did be a spy in Munich and so forth you know they went on to win the actual thing itself so it was no disgrace illegally these 2 but from a personal point he was so disappointed because he has grown up Aston Villa winning the Champions League and been involved in a Super Cup as world and these were memories which are you know chose even today so I was disappointed that we didn't do it but you know I went through want to try and anyway can can you ever see it happening where a team from Scotland does what that same day until you know I was was as good as that ing. It's unlikely because you don't remember the time everything just fell into place to there's no teams allowed in European games apart from Scottish teams and the the money that was around was it was obviously in Scotland as well and now with the money so much in the Premier League now it's going to be very unlikely that a Scottish team is going to do that particular and all unless they they join a pay legal or British legal something like that so they'll be very difficult because the money now is absolutely phenomenal and yeah OK Mark will work post after 2nd be about with the intimate moments we're going to talk about Mark's early days and of course his time at Anfield as well as that's all to come on the way in a 2nd. Radio Merseyside. 17 minutes past 6 is the time you're listening to Merseyside sport through till 7 o'clock my special guest is Mark Walters he's got a new book out it's called winging it we've just been reminiscing about your Rangers days Mark I know you want Rangers to win the title but it's nice to see another team in Hearts' doing while it's near as well yeah it was good obviously normal to brains and Celtic normally. Command everything up there as part of the last few years Celtic have been walking away with it last few years but you know the more competition the better I mean people just say oh you know it's only 2 teams or blah blah blah but if you look at Europe it's the same remained the same 2 teams generally win. The league in England same 2 in Spain Portugal the same so you know it's you know competition is good for but good for unusual for you know 2 teams to dominate really you know no no I mean and that's that is a good point isn't it we tend to think of every of the least competitive and it's not at all really well I'm sure you've been asked this question by was love asking this question especially to a player who's played in a Merseyside Darby at the 2nd City as well and the Old Firm is just the Old Firm not spots of the rest of them in terms of the atmosphere the intensity and to be honest the hatred. Well I've spoke to some players as well because it's because they're the questions of interest me as well for the Often people Ray Wilkins about it to spoke to some Trevor Francis some players who played all over Europe and big clubs and they say the same thing you know to do to Celtic Rangers game it's a different type of game it's probably less football played when I was there for sure would be different now maybe but the atmosphere is electric you know you could be to me is away from your teammate and you just can't hear a word with a fear India as you say the rivalry are rather use that word and hatred. But it is intense and you can't prepare for it I mean I was basically thrown in when I joined a club within 2 days of join the club and I realised after the game why because you can be expected taught all this is going to happen that might happen until the game gets on the way and you realise how hectic it was and it was crazy really was a couple teammates have to say to me to calm down you know you know you know plain and on the local parks now you know try to get a ball turn and play but it is difficult because the intensity in the front from head to pace of the game is on rivaled Yeah not 1st game of the Old Firm game I mean I don't think it holds great memories for you does it really that the home fans I think gave you a little bit of racist abuse and I think that's something thrown on the pitch well how how hard was trying to play when all that was going on. It was a nice Nadab idea of experience a little bit in England plain places like Millwall you know Leeds United Newcastle and west done in London which you'd think it wouldn't be a bad book so I was expects experienced it was a say. It was difficult to get a head round it's and Graeme soonest did explain to me what my app and even got into the game. That I won't cite a name of a paper but it's not like magic sided put it that way that guys in the in the in the paper telling them which they were going to throw at me and and what they're going to throw at me and you know it was daunting and the lads as usual football banter I did say to me I wouldn't need to be going any fruit shop in the week you know yeah so that was a way we dealt with it just left on it you know I mean so it was difficult no doubt about it but there's nothing going to stop me playing that game will be available to for selection anyway and as you said that you had experienced a little bit in England as well and growing up as well does that make you even more determined to prove yourself and you know almost run it down people's throats really honestly I remember growing up as a as a you know young teen I had friends who were good players and probably would have made it you just couldn't take that kind of abuse and you know they gave it a very Canton our style if you like and that's the way that we dealt with it obviously at the time there's no way you can. Carry on with a career you know fight in every game because you know you know go to the Petain you know go to the manager and I was leaving and you can an old go to the club either but I had some friends and asked him what he could do with it is by you know sticking up from Saudi because you remember particular culture I'm from an aggressive culture but we're taught to stand up for ourselves and not to take abuse from anybody but I I quickly learned that the only way that I was going to progress if you like was to to look at people who were had succeeded. You know Clyde Best and so little bit later on and the way they dealt with it and that was the only way you will get on with it is a footballer because he was in right now where you could walk off the pitch all or have a word with the the referee I mean you even even dealt with the or you. Didn't get anywhere so it was it was only one option for me which was to stand up for myself and just plays better or you know even twice as hard as I would normally there's no doubt about it is the mark that things have progressed for the better but how much how far we still got to go do you think how much of a problem is still racism in football. I've always said from which from a young boy given that football is no different to society I mean once you get rid of racism if you like in society then you you get rid of in on football the fact that there's laws now and rules that you you know supports can't do overseas help things and I'd like to think that with education a lot of supposed do believe it is wrong to to abuse a player for nothing more than being a black so but you know you just look look on the you know the T.V. Last week with Ryan Air allowed that man to abuse an elderly lady and instead of taking a man off the flight they took you know to move the lady which to me is ridiculous so those kind of things that still happen in football in life and as I say until you eradicate from general. And or say social situation like that then football is not going to end different in my opinion you were the 1st black player to sign for the club going I mean not must not you know hard to believe proud and you know you obviously led the way for others as well. Yeah of course I mean you know to actually play for that club is absolutely you know a blessing and a privilege in itself but to be the 1st to ANY think in life is always good I suppose and for the 1st black play is very I'm very honored and very privileged as you say to be good to be known as the 1st one but I'd like to think I'd have not only helped. The black children you know say it's possible but people generally say it's possible because you know it's hard anyway to be 1st of all people don't realize how much luck you need never mind help from family members or or just staying fit which is again a lot of luck involved so it is difficult anyway so if I've helped some charts OK Mark can do it then anybody can do it yeah I was looking at you start for ranges 52 goals in 144 games for what for anyone mascot for a wing guy it's brilliant as well most seller be proud of that we got you got a favorite we got of a sort of favorite goal that sticks in the memory for your time up north. The 1st goal I always or any club of played for was remembered it because it's one of those things that you you can tick up a box and say all right I feel that stat if you like so played X. Amount games going many goals and it's only one club I've ever played for I was unable to score a goal for which was Southampton which are I don't at all abashed due to the manager at the time in didn't we didn't get on very well to go Merrington his name was it just didn't go on to add a definite clash of personalities but if at U.W. Not a school for the 1st goal which it was against I think it was no it was a welcome to the name of the club now but. It was a good goal for me and it was my 1st 1st one and I always remember a little chip from the edge of the box Yeah yeah I've just scraped out all the questions about Southampton don't worry it's funny how many matches and let's let's look at your early life a little bit I mean for that for the 1st 5 years of your life you lived in in Handsworth in Birmingham a lot of people know that area before moving to the New Town was it was it a happy childhood for you. Absolutely yeah we upgraded and went to a new turn from hands with which was. In it with the people there so yeah it was a every you know 0 Well no I'm joking there but yeah yeah it was a fantastic childhood you know you know single parent mother who's a mother and father to us and we don't think of anything and go without anything as it were she she done brilliant for us and your great great childhood messing around and just doing the things that children do yeah but you know what I mean Handsworth not far from the whole phones is that my knowledge of Birmingham isn't always that great but was there any any temptation to be a West Brom fan and so. Not really know although I was a bigot Miles some of the players not redoubles been vilified I mean I lived literally. One kilometer from the ground every big big European night all over Wednesday night I should say did you see the floodlights from my house which were initially a very that at the time and they were just definitely there for show because one odd numbered plane there was a 15 year old that absolute terror where you couldn't see in the corners you know so but it was a fun fantastic to be there and as a 78 year old used to sneak into the ground and with my mates and could afford to pay the the the face so when it gets used to hope and half an hour before the game finished we stood to sneak you know going to need to turnstiles and so rest of it was always my. Club and I was a privilege actually to watch Keith Leonard in those plays because he later became I used to manager so. Fantastic time to be around village at the time really enjoyed it yeah I mean Philip park I was still a great stadium isn't it but back in those days I remember it being used for countless F.A. Cup semi finals and things like it was one of the top stadiums in your probably wasn't it I definitely I mean it's a fantastic spot. Although the pitch was brilliant in those days to winter it was one of the better pitches in. In the end and you just a great great history they had you know a member going to watch him and yawn quite came their play came there and remember going to a game and trying to get young quite a signature and very newborn who I'd like to became friends with the I remain close line to meet so I wouldn't get new young quite a gay signature so that we could disappoint a target so it's very scary new bomb stop you from got encroached signature he did yes he did he did I cursed him for evermore This was before he was kissed by Nigel by Brian Cliff I see him was it I would have thought so yeah a very famous T.V. Interview drawings of how he spotted by Philip one well. Played for Newtown unity and. And then. Another from a crate Shakespeare's father had a tame unfortunately great shape that passed away. He would have been only an Easter is a thing and she had a heart to complete and then we hope that that team disbanded and went to another team called Dunlop terriers which is. Where Aston Villa had a lot of connections with and. I was invited down the club through that club really and trained there it's a 10 year old and it just kept improving from there really yeah you played alongside Andy Gray didn't you that that range is actually what was he like I mean essential larger life character. As well what was he like in the dressing room and to be around yes there is definitely a wallflower that's for sure. But I was my value before he came to the club the 2nd time I stood watch him when he came to the club the 1st time big admirer of Andy and he say's big character. I don't like Graham Taylor and he got on very well because he was so for Sid for Simms whole loud but it was great for the lads always remember him coming on to the team bus. With oversize Suan and all the lads laughing around and making jokes about his oversized suit what little we did with Little did we know that. Gopher at the time had cut a piece is on suit so that was the only one he had to wear right. In the doghouse and what I think was. Wrong Saunders gave you your 1st contract legendary manager we didn't make you practice of that view until after Ron it that life was without disappointing to see him go it was a little because although we didn't play for him in the 1st team he had so much influence on the club itself I mean I remember I was a schoolboy was playing in the Reserves and I remember something silly I was doing I was marking the center off instead of going in between the 2 center odds and he just pulled me aside and said Mark just get inside it Marcus and I just get in between in between us there are so you can go after work to do and little things like that it come and give you and I say definitely. It was a disciplinarian and. You know I think most teams in most clubs. Thrive better when you know what he knows he's the possible he knows what to do and he was deaf in that category I was a good manager and while we specked it I mean this is you we're talking now about the golden period of Aston Villa's history all with the European Cup winning team of course he wasn't in charge by then but I think he laid the foundations didn't he really that would be fair to say oh that obviously Tony bomb was in charge at the time but without run saunas is no way we would have got that far you know I mean he was a. Real real disciplinary and the team did what he said and worked as hard and he didn't take any prisoners you know very disciplined hard working team maybe. A bit Sergeant like mentality had but it definitely worked and although some allies were scared of him you know you got results what you needed it's time the European Cup squad you didn't make the squad we were out there for the game no I admittedly that season and you know the big came Scott came and got but been for that if you like and then. You know the European Cup squad was named and I didn't make that you know The Times said I don't worry only 17 you time a come again but even a 17 year old or new Don't get into European Cup final teams all every week so I was very disappointed and didn't Knight the squad but. We were we had we had a squad we had a squad of very good you team squad at the time and we had a tournament in Germany so I think those we would stay in the bar all it's used to what's in a bar in Germany so my saw. Was a fantastic situation for the club to even get there never mind to win it so we were so proud you know the lads win the Cup yeah I mean when you look at the names I listed the name from your Rangers when you're a velour as well Peter with. Nearly missed the name that the winning goal in the fight here Gordon Cowans Gary Shaw Nigel spanker of course that's another story isn't it what happens Nigel spankin you know there was a lot of story surrounding that game wasn't there as well when you look at what happened to spring for example Yeah absolutely I mean the Jimmy remember is a goalkeeper at an injust and yet in India before he started by you know he didn't miss many games so he played himself or became selfie I should say but had to come off and enlarges spin came on and I had a fantastic game but I think I was written on the court that year you know we we were fantastic defensively we really worked hard and counterattacked and I always remember meeting Nigel Michael Ruhlman a Gibson many years later and he actually said to me that's the most one sided game is ever lost. So so just as our name was on the cup that day and you know the lads with tremendous defended really well and obviously breakaway goal and the rest is history as well and you played in the Graham Taylor as well near the end of your time a villa and so many tributes to him I'm such a sad loss to football wasn't me absolutely I mean the biggest compliment I can give him is our nearly resigned 1st of Villa because I was a bit. Asian at a time. That I had a bad season myself but missed most of it through Hendry and he came in he was a you know of fresh of breath air through the club got everything organized got the discipline back in the club. Actually was running things but wasn't persuaded by the chairman and you know you know he actually ran things in which is fantastic and I'm nearly resigned I just I just thought that it was so unlikely after what's gone before that we would get straight back up that I decided that I was going to leave before before I even came you know so it was it was so so good at the club as I said disciplinary and got players to get in on time and. Being organized had a game plan for most games as well which was on you heard of up until up until he came and as he says a tragic loss that he passed away recently let's talk about your time at Liverpool and how did signing for them come about because I believe you were offered a new contract at Rangers when you yeah things are going well at Rangers would want to league again and. But the new rules come in a bad term for foreigners so I was worried about not playing for tactical reasons as in I was you know for foreign players and I think the club were of that as well because they let Chris Woods go as well because I was there I think they don't really wanted one of the from place to be a goalkeeper so. Once I realized there's a possibility that might be playing for football reasons. Not for football reason I should say they did make me think and then the graphic Graeme grabs he was coming for me and I thought of me a contract at Liverpool. A To speak to the chairman again about moving any obviously of me a good contract and he did say you going to regret. Great leaving but as I said at the time with what the cards are on the table at a time where you know these 4 foreigners rule but I didn't know who's going to be rescinded within a few months yeah I remember the 4 foreigner rule as well because Liverpool were back in Europe the season that you signed they were going some through something similar in but obviously you join in Liverpool you weren't a foreigner full of a poet even because in England even Scottish and Welsh players were classed as foreigners were nice it was the way it really wasn't really yeah it was a weird rule obviously would you just about to leave it was possible to to do so but that was with it was it that was it was at the time and yeah it was it was difficult because I had some great friends in Glasgow and and of sort of football was going really well so I was it was a hard decision to make but you know you don't turn around and you know the most successful club in Britain very often is on our couldn't Liverpool is a great great move for me so what was it like you know your 1st day you failed Liverpool and obviously been through a little bit of upheaval canny at last and Graeme seen as common but they weren't that long ago that they were they were League champions was it live you were walking into the dressing room for the 1st time here was one test I mean some some well we had some world class players in that team at the time in the squad as well you know. John Barnes you are all said He's one of the best players ever played with the best player ever played with him for one and then you had you know even worse one of best goalscorers ever and so some great big big names in the squad so you know he was of is a great move for me and I always thought he's going to be a good move and he's going to help me be the better player yeah how much did you learn off John Barnes as a player yeah as a city easy what I didn't realize that John was good life or was you know it was a very one sided all seems to be a where one for one for a player but he's right foot is good is many many stronger for you know so he was a complete player for me could had the ball you know until you guys injury was quite quick as well. So I was a big admirer of his you and you W. I remember the game against Oldham. Field at the beginning of the 9192 season you came on as a sub replacing Steve in the 65th minute so talk us through that. Yeah . A new America from Boston last until a day so you know it was never too pleased to come of anyway so I don't use to please a time when. There was a great occasion was a lovely sunny day. Again it was a dream come true to join such a fantastic club and to play in a game with. Some fantastic players I don't member much about a game because of so I didn't do much of a nonmember but I just never can take any chances or you're right 40 shots he scored with just really thinking or thought it was very left sided but his right foot just got his left Yeah I think I remember but again she wanted to but it just is a beautiful day and it was a great crowd your 1st Merseyside derby came early that season as well as a 31 win at Anfield and you actually say in the book that football took center stage more than the Old Firm Darby's I mean we've discussed the Darby It was all about the match on the side then oh yeah it was a as a football match I mean I remember looking up and seen some Liverpool fans and Everton fans actually sitting next to gether and I thought that would never happen in the has going you know so that was good I'll you know it's good to see that they were mainly new to each other and I'm sure there was a lot of families who supported both teams a game I don't think happens very often in Glasgow either so your football took to illustrate set the stage and it was a move a football match and. Use enjoy both as well and fortunately the only time you see Jabal in Glasgow's if you win if you lose is the job yeah. Scored your 1st goal against Notts County in fact is the penalty did you know your own penalty duty that day or was it a spur of the moment sort of thing. I don't know me for but I was to oppose the Glasgow Rangers when I could get the ball off early McCoist to. Just you know beat people up to get the ball but I was just typing as always finds himself in a take as it were and in playing why he's probably the only chance you can get to score a lot of games as well so yes. Soon as the book was given I just grabbed the Borg and luckily slotted the ball and yeah the following game was against Aston Villa and you actually scored an argument of the penalty Well I mean it's funny actually because tonight we've got Chelsea against Darby and frankly I'm part is already been saying now he's not going to celebrate if Dobby beat them was how difficult is it for a bro me to go back to Villa and play against them for a new club like Liverpool. It was difficult really was I mean you know it every time I toss the ball I got booed as well which was really really does produce a point I was going to the time say you know you know there's me could have been a vilified and I'm game dude you know. But I did speak to Gordon Karens after the game and he said Don't worry Mark it happened to me as well so I did feel a bit better because Gordon can I think he spent about 25 years at the club and he still got booed so I did feel a bit better when when he told me that but you know it's business you know you got to play as well as you can feel playing for and that's what I try to do in the school to get my local team but as Waco as you know I did you celebrate. Ability a car member annoy me yes the thing is back in those days it wasn't the trying not to celebrate either was it you know that's a new fangled thing really isn't it yeah it is here but I'm sure I'm sure the sports can forgive me for as I was game booed that are you know I didn't seem happy when I scored but but they did do novellas more probably And you know. I always be grateful for them given my chance and of course the year after you play them again park and that game is remembered more than anything else for the Ronnie Rosenthal mess yeah yeah I'm sure no one needs me to explain this mess because it's so well documented you were on the pitch at that point when he takes it round the keeper I mean you're thinking this is a goal what was he what was your reaction when he mixed I mean if you are discards called The 1st goal you said I was I think I'm sure I was dancing that game so I was well appeal to those who want to lop and he took it around to run the goalkeeper and I think I may even be just just checking out there's no rebounds possible so our kind of unlawful to wait and to see that we know we scored a goal and to know our party my won the game as well so when I saw that he hit the bar I was you know flabbergasted couldn't believe it because you know Villa Park was one of the better pitches in the league and he was I don't he could blame a bubble I mean he just lacking lack of concentration he just let the ball bubble up on him on his foot and miss a chance but you know you kind of feel sorry for him I think after the game remember no one spoke to him because he just didn't know what to say you know who's a please that was really gutted but Ronnie Ron is the type of character that he could miss 17 chances but still Scouts going to trick you know he's one of those kind of players it's funny because I remember that guy Mark and I remember Ronnie actually scored in that game after he missed the sitter and no one congratulated him after he scored that I'd love to have been a fly on the wall and heard what Graham soonest said to him but I like yeah I mean I'm sure to write a score that one and Misty are the one he actually scored with but I mean we've all we've all missed chances. Not a bad a Don't get me wrong but what can you say what you say European football was back around failed me your 2nd season there after Dan how how exciting was it to play in Europe again especially play for Liverpool in your year will bring I mean of grew up with playing in Europe. I always believed it was the best tournament in the world and admittedly it's the league's most important thing but as a player that's where you want to play next were a lot of players go to play teams are in the Champions League because they have the option of playing in Europe and so forth so it was fantastic time very exciting playing against some testy clubs as well so yeah it was you know you can't get any better and that's where you come to the game for to play in big games and you and Phil folklore on you the exact game I mean I don't know how often people mentioned I would imagine quite a lot you scored that goal you had to score 3 as a team after losing to known in France I mean this is the staggering part of this story only $23000.00 fans around failed to want you and you scored the 3rd goal what was that like yeah as you say we'd been to New down from the 1st leg but the game was live on television so I think a lot of people didn't think we're going to win a and B. Are thought to such a cold night save some money and what and watch it on the television. Which which was disappointing for the 2 for the lads because we were in a fantastic atmosphere but ironically the 23000 while they're still had a fantastic atmosphere and got beyond the lads and we were working and got the equaliser and then from there on really was only one with one team going to win the game and fortunately we be done and it was down the cop and I mean they say you don't they the old stories that the cock can suck the ball into the net did you feel for the kind of force of the coppers you were attacking hoping to score yeah different as I said we did the crowd fantastic that night and. He said they start the ball and if you like you know what we have you had a chance as well but luckily we got one of them anyway and you know a lot of people were surprised we won but the lads were we were a lot faith that we'd get the goals you know goals to win the game but it was just a good team performance as well really really deserved to the 3 no win great stuff we'll be back with more Walters in a 2nd much just check on the right. Busy and breeze 1st week days from 7 on B.B.C. Radio Mazie side. B.B.C. Radio most he said I. AM My special guest this evening is Mark Walters his new book is out now it's called whingeing gate it must be nice mark as well I am I right in saying you were the 1st player to score a hat trick for Liverpool in the Premier League here so was your 1st ever goal as well 1st of a goal full of a point to Premier League and the 1st trick Yes So milestones all over the place here yeah I'm very pleased about it because because you know when we had people at Robbie Fowler in those commune Russia club so to to get 3 before them is a very pleasing it. Got to ask you about that goal against Manchester United and any Liverpool fan will say thank you for doing that because that pretty much stopped them from winning the league title in 92 and it wasn't there wasn't really anything on the game for Liverpool was the because of course you have the cup final coming up not not too far in the distant future yes right you know all the lows would be trying to stay fit and play well to again that's a difficult final team but you know any time Liverpool play Man United you know there's no love lost there and we were always going to try and win that game which I thought we didn't deserve to win as well when you look back at a time when Liverpool do you think the expectation was at times almost too much for the place to cope with because of you know his league title after league title was and it was clearly a period of massive transition Yeah. Well that's doesn't a beast as it were you know I mean if you play for Liverpool you're judged on if you want to lead an art and that's what it's like and. I think it should be any other way I mean a certain clubs in Britain that you have to win the league to be judged of as any good and unfortunate we couldn't do it and unfortunately haven't done it since but a lot about great chance this year he just wanted to do in the league in any tournament and hopefully Liverpool can win the league this year because he's you know really it's just been too long really you're on the bench when you for the 92 F.A. Cup Final I mean you've been in the team quite a lot that states as well so how disappointing was that for you yeah again you know football is you know more people's careers option downs and that was a low point you know obviously it was fantastic for the club to be in a cup final and as a as a member of a squad you have to you know give your best and and and and G.O.P. Lads who are in the team and you're going to be plain but there's no doubt I was very disappointed as a child you when you when you when you start off you what you want to good going to playing cup final you want to win leagues and the fact I was so close to be a so far by being on the bench was very disappointing but again you just have to just get on with it and awfully awfully. Hopefully the next one comes and you'll be involved yeah finally $95.00 the same thing happened again Yes right yes right yeah you're not going to get respect. John a good thing that I didn't lose in the 3rd one but. Maybe I had tricked but yeah. That's football you know I've been fortunate to play in cup finals and great occasion and to not play in a game again was very disappointing but there's nothing you can do you know you partly scored a team and you know not on the type of player to go to from from you know Tommy had a prime as it were just get on with it and knuckle down and hopefully you can change the manager's mind for the next game when you look back at the Liverpool career. You know how do you look back at it look back at it with pride all regret or make sure of everything sort of make sure everything got very proud to say of you know it's played on the not game to Liverpool and scored a few goals and but obviously I'm disappointed not been involved in a Champions Champions League game for Liverpool or or been involved in a win win the league because as I say discern clubs in Britain that you test your own way judged on so disappointing but. You know if I the same set of circumstances again I would never change anything because it was a fantastic experience I've met people who I wouldn't met otherwise you know my children were born I'm as you say all the world as it were so it's been a friend is a fantastic time for me they're older sailed on fortune it wasn't perfect because I didn't do well in the football which is what was there for but it was a fantastic time in my life and made some great friends we still speak to today even I love looking whenever I you know I've got a book like yours I love looking at all the pictures and I love the one you've got with Norris McWhirter from the Guinness Book of Records as you the Steve Nicol David borrows IYAM Russia a few of the Liverpool players that what was not all about. Are going to be a karma. You know you got me there you know I want to look it up but I haven't seen up in the book but you got me there I got. Something to do with props Liverpool success in that period of time it would have been after the 18 league titles which was a record for my eyes an era that really you know yeah all the pictures that caught my eye I can't I can't let you go without mentioning you playing for England as well you know as proud as Punch lining up for England in New Zealand in 9091 you got the warning link up I would imagine that is a problem and yeah absolutely again when you start a child you you have these are playing Cup finals you know play for your country and to the fact that I did that's only one cap I was fortunate to play for England that every level. There was from the you know schoolboy level right up to the fall so you know again very proud moment I mean family are very proud as well so yeah it was fantastic playing for England even it was only the one time the game before that I played for the Glasgow Rangers in a pulled my hamstring so I knew I wasn't fit and they for money so do yourself justice but it's a game and it's a is a tournament and I couldn't turn down and I don't regret it at all. The things that caught my eye is how much you mix in showbiz circles I mean you know we have pictures here of what what. And also Jim McDonald from Coronation Street just like you like to mix in showbiz circles Mark of course I mean you 2 are my favorite showed a Coronation Street and. Well yeah I am a big fan of Kyra's history of always was watched it turned to Madonna's on my favorite characters before you got to get killed off but he got. You know often now he's back on it now apparently is years back in it yeah but he's up to no good to fret and one thing that really comes through a lot is your pride in your your family picture with your mom. On the where all there's also pictures with you and your children and all the kits family clearly means a great deal to you. Yeah absolutely I'm. Very proud of my children my mother especially as I don't know myself and I difficulties to bring children up and she did on our own you know so so I'm forever grateful for her. Keeping me on the straight and narrow as I was a very I to avoid a child I must tell you but she. Expressive it did me and kept me on the straight and narrow and and obviously having my own children very proud of them the way they have. Gone through a few things as well but you know of. I'm qualified at law and Amazon is taking medicine so feel good talk to soon so very proud of them I mean I don't know where they get brick in the brain from but me yeah they didn't fancy taking out football any of them then did you put them off I think I think my lifestyle public put a lot but my son especially even to the rugby playing school which. Nearly cost him going there to going to have played rugby as the school so I think he was more interested in rugby than football but he does like football in his life. I think he said he was a Man United fan and then that was the end of in me taking him to football matches after there and they you know with the tabligh you are going to say that either not . And you know when you look back at your entire career what would you say is your proudest moment. When I just becoming a professional footballer it was it was one of the the things I've always dreamed of being and play from a local team that was my 1st dream and as it were and then to take that off was fantastic I'm meant to be able to do the other things always came down you know been evolved with Aston Villa so that was the thing really and I've been involved for you know 2 things I still miss now if anything could football is the banter in the gesture room and match day you know bar those things you know bottles things are pretty good could wouldn't bother me not of had such a long career but so much stays always you know when you go to watch live matches or little tingle down you down your neck they think you know I could still play but he was no kidding myself and you know the banter in the dressing room you can't you can't beat that really not easily where the industry where you get some young men together and have a laugh as well yeah absolutely and Liverpool of 2018 you said you hope they can you can win the league title or they can win the league title you must you must monitor someone like Daniel Sturridge closely B M Being from Birmingham. Well yeah I went to school with his dad actually and his dad was a good footballer. And unfortunately one thing another let him not to to succeed as it were but yeah. You know you get a bit bad luck with injuries and stuff but with the squad they have now and if you don't you don't you can be content with being a bit part player if you like for maybe the season at least until he can prove his fitness and Liverpool have a fantastic chance of winning the league after so many years because the squads are now in as good you know good in depth and we've got a world class players again so it's a good chance now for that when you look at Manchester City I mean that the ones that Liverpool of got to chase Can you see them dropping enough points for Liverpool to be able to do it Oh definitely I mean you know the head to head games was important but Villa Villa never put a Laws don't well in that so they've got nothing to fear you know you need a lot of luck in any any competition and are going to need to some teams that don't normally lose 2 to beat Man City and things and and little to be consistent a little bit more than last season but. I think without doubt this is the best team divide for a few years and. You've got to give it one percent because I was 3 if you live where you have to and I've got to ask you about Villa. Not this year I mean obviously Steve Bruce has just lost his job they've they've got Dean Smith And I'm John Terry as well what do you think about village chances. Realistically it's very unlikely to going to get promoted with that team to have I mean the team is the problem not the management and in my opinion they got some good players but again in depth there's not enough good players in depth so it's going to be extremely difficult to get that team in the playoffs never mind automatic spot but you know if you're a Villa fan you've got to keep the faith as it were you going to believe that you can do it because if the fans don't believe it applies definitely won't so it's possible but if I was a betting man I wouldn't I would put any money on it Marc has been brilliant talking to me thanks for spending the time with us at the book is calling it a model to story good luck with it and thanks a lot thanks a lot yes thanks for having me is out now so yes please go on by you where it will make sure people know where it's available as well as more Walters my special guest at the saved in all Merseyside sports thanks a lot for your company I will do it all again tomorrow with drive time on the hour from 4 o'clock until 6 and then with it being a Thursday it is try time Steve Roberts and the gang between 6 and 7 tomorrow for Merseyside sport Don't go anywhere though stay to the evening show was on the way back should Jim Maine Fausto Whatever you're up to have a great evening.
