Radio news. Was. Thanks Jess and good evening welcome to Radio Merseyside for for a Wednesday night with me poor old soul town this evening we got a special hour in tribute to the late great Tommy Lawrence who died a week ago at the age of 77 my cues caught up with the man known affectionately as the Flying Pig 6 years ago I want to hear that interview tonight we'll hear the little Paul legend talk about Bill Shankly about instant John about Roger Hunt winning the f.a. Cup in 1965 becoming the 1st sweeper keeper and his time with trying near as well before that though we'll hear from a couple a man who knew Tommy very well the man that succeeded him at Anfield Ray Clemence on the writer I'm broadcaster John Keith is on the way. A very good evening choose 5 minutes past 6 o'clock so we're just 10 minutes away from our interview with Tommy Lawrence the former Liverpool and from me a goalkeeper died at the age of 77 last Wednesday known as the Flying Pig He played 390 games for the Reds over 9 years and was part of the 1st ever f.a. Cup winning side in 1965 and won 2 league titles he then played 80 times for Rovers and also picked up 3 international caps for Scotland his successor failed Ray Clemence says it's a sad loss. Sony has not been well recently I saw him an event of about 34 months ago used his job yourself but I have. Taken quite seriously ill sized as a sub sub for him in his family my thoughts are with his family at this moment and it's a sad loss for Little Paul as well you know there's a big part of us of all polls. And he's always been very late. Jovial wonderful person to be around and obviously an excellent goalkeeper as well and when you when you look at his career I mean Ogo keep his time to to analyze each of those games what kind of goalkeeper was a. Totally obviously play behind run gates and Tommy Smith gifted in the ad so it didn't have to be great to deal with crosses but his greatest asset was Liverpool most days or they started the trend of English with the keeper. He was the best I've ever seen one be one situation you know I sucked in the Stan Grant kinds of over wardrobe I learned so much watching him how he dealt with won't be one situations and the number of times he say Liverpool players are broken through pasta but for you couldn't count on how much pressure did you feel owned replacing him because he was such a legend and everyone knew about the flying pig didn't I They did yeah but you know I've had sort of 2 and how he is watching them Lenny what the club was all about and of course there was pressure to come in and replace him but. The committee was just an homage to replace it and try and take on the local goalkeeper in history even further when you look back at goalkeepers like tell me that they don't make them like Nani anymore do they really we see goalkeepers being rotated all the time one game in one game out I mean like she sounds well it was it was every game was now. Yeah I mean things were different those days and I still find it difficult to understand why goalkeepers alright safety because you know you don't get tired by it and go. You know during the run of the outfield players it's for a mental thing to escape and those concentration levels high for the show is about the activity that you actually going to have in the 95 minutes. To find out the song obviously whatever. Again he possibly could and I did the same when I finished the game has changed in many many ways now I'm not one of them and by still find out how. And when you saw Tommy did he still have the same passion for the game and the same passion for Liverpool Football Club yes there were 4 football club all his life really I know that you know when I took over from him and my fist doubles for us out in the side and obviously Tony was then played in the reserves and Bill Shankly sort of said to me about moving on to go the cloak and. He didn't want to do it a little bit a little for football club and you know you just you just happy to play and it was a big loophole for publishers his cloak obviously and then he did move you move to try man and Frankie Laine came in is one thing but to support a new pressure on serve a wonderful wonderful always got a smile on his face you would never know. He was already precious I never showered it on me just to look at a bunch of beer out on will be stubbornness to sit with us existing on which a misstep and dish which I came into while in Kennedy caught up with right temporal cost to John Keith and I'm field on Sunday John you told me Lawrence Well after reporting on Little Paul joining his playing dice on the spokes of his sadness of Lawrence's Pa saying very very soggy and not totally unexpected but that he said nevertheless he had been ill for some time to only a lovely guy very laid back guy and a terrific goalkeeper of course Shankly 1st real goalkeeper a low Tommy was here before Bill Shankly arrived in time failed but then he got his place through Jim finale made it his own and he was one of these great mouth and keepers Ray Clemence followed him and Bruce Grobbelaar him hardly have a mystic game between them I think something like the 3 of them missed something like 10 games in 35 years it's just incredible but Tommy was the 1st sweeper keep it English football and this was a phrase coined by Joe the 1st time they've ever been used and it was after the 966 Charity Shield Everton Liverpool the Goodison Liverpool won one they'll Rajo in school to go but Tommy Lawrence had a good game that day and Jonah said to an assembled group of sportswriters afterwards I've just seen the 1st sweep to keep up an English football that guy's a defender as well as a goalkeeper and this is what Shankly had developed in Tommy Lawrence it's something Shankly thought would be a good tactic to have the goalkeeper not just a line goalkeeper which most of the middle was being but to come out and save with his legs and make a last ditch interceptions and things like that and that's what Tommy did and also because of that break Clements that from him on so it was an ongoing thing with livable so you mention of the suite to keep the ball as a goalkeeper himself what was he like was. As he was that he was a big guy was and he was big and that's why the call and they did it with affection although it might not sound that cold in the flying pig because he was always a burly goalkeeper but despite that day like Neville sorrowful later had great outlet a Cism and great agility so it didn't bother him that he out this quite big structure in fact it was very odd job and as a side very laid back he was never one to boast or brag he just got on with the game and you same with attributes in the form of players this week just what his teammates thought of and they absolutely love the guy Yeah and part of that great side throughout the 960 s. As you mention them in I don't know what it is finest moment was presumably the 65 cup final Like most places that So yeah I would think so I mean Roy Avon's paying tribute to Tommy called it Little's greatest of a team well people might argue that in terms of scale and everything but in the sense that they won the f.a. Cup for the 1st time 73 years that big fall never won it it was the one big thing Liverpool fans wanted to see and Tommy Lawrence of course played a big big part in that certainly on the downside Did he ever talk about that infamous night in Milan when was the ball kicked out of his hands this is control to see the yeah it was it was kick straight out of his hands on the put in the not the referee awarded a goal later on when a few of the things like this happened in English football the referees disallowed them but this referee of course was proved later to be totally wrong and Tommy to talk about it said it wasn't a goal I had it he kicked it out of my hand but he said we've since found out the cause why because on that particular night as the referee left the field Tommy Lawrence kicked him up the backside on the referee just kept walking and Shankly to his dying day said he was the one who holds me in football is a referee so yell visually a big blow to Liverpool that they didn't go on to the final of it because it would have had a good chance of winning it and Shankly of course never won the European Cup which was the one great lack of Suppose on the c.v. And. I think. 67. Is. In training from. Improving picture across money of. 59. Thanks. Point 8 f.m. 1485 medium wave the digital and freeview channels 7 soon to. Be seen as he said. 16 minutes past 6 as promised we're going to hear our in-depth interview with Tommy Lawrence now it's a week today that we were told of the side News of the death of the former Liverpool and tram made goalkeeper he joined the Reds in the mid 1950 s. And played 390 games winning 2 lead titles and an f.a. Cup winners' medal as well former Reds manager Roy Evans refers to him as a true and field legend and a key part of the best ever Liverpool team all my cues spoke to Tommy back in 2012 and began by talking about was his Liverpool career before it even made his debut and before Bill Shankly arrived it was fantastic I was there before Bill came but i used by Phil Taylor That's right I was signed Russell Taylor Roger and I was Warsaw trying I was there 1st but Roger was in the Army of the time but we both went together to live near each other tell me about the difference between Liverpool of Phil Taylor and when Shankly arrived Well it was very easy going infantile Taylor was there was nothing really to say you've got to win this you've got it when he brought it all up to where they're just going to be very very easy going and you know I don't really think Phil Taylor was the boss I think the directors were the boss and I'm dating the meaning of back to team and Phil Taylor was was the figurehead that's exactly right Mike and what I need to call a stick for it but if you want to pick your own team if you're going to take. Managers don't get jobs of football clubs like Liverpool unless things seriously wrong and they were when Shankly took over before we actually arrived what sort of stay with Liverpool in there really where there really was bad the where they were now I was in the reserves at the time and the lads were dropping from the 1st team to resist and they. Richard they had a Nose Day which is an amazing thing you got 4 pounds for a win with the 1st team to pound for a win in the region but if the 1st team wasn't one in that he went in so they would rather play. Just for the 2 pound which was not the weighted court but football was a. Breach that sort of that awful level where 1st team players who would rather drop out and play for the 2nd team Yes that's the way it was the 1st team just wasn't one and they didn't seem to be any any go in anybody at all time really didn't it was horrible when Phil Taylor was finally removed from his position as manager obviously I don't mean that surprise to many people no I think you know it was too nice a month to be should say that but to be a money you really was a nice man when he got the sack who was Bill Shankly to put him into metre was it was a few days before he got the job did everybody know it was a few days or quite a bit before he got the job because Ruben Bennett came 1st Reuben Bennett signed as head coach and they call them had coach but I think the most annoying you're going to get a manager in. At least for a couple months before shanks and he was taken to training and. The blue Bill Shankly just like what was Shaq Lee's impact at how different was he I suppose he was a polar opposite really from full time politically completely opposite from just wanted to play you know you had to play football it changed all the way all that type of training you did in the fifty's I was 1st 6 weeks of training would run in from field to Melwood on the roads and we don't. Know was there and you went there you have done some exercises and you. And Roger and I we were travelling on the train from wanting to tell of a pool and we couldn't get up and down the steps because your legs there's nothing on your legs and it took it all out and Shanks came it completely changed it he said you play on grass you'll train on grass and that was it all the 10 mile runs had gone. And how long did it take for Shankly to turn things around in a football sense well I think it was it was probably just about 4 or 5 months but I think 1st game to go before could I was in a boy band and they got beat for. I took it a bit but he changed it and when the next year it was absolutely brilliant and 2nd division absolutely fabulous watching him playing as well great chant a fellow. Actually I was born and only about 5 miles or Bill I was born in a place called Daly which is a mining village just quite far from. The same part of the there so I was from mine and people as well of course when he found out I wrote that was me all the time and you know everything there but what he did was this thing he had driven Bennett I'm sure he knew Reuben Bennett was there when he came you know always only there for a month before Bill came as chief of them should build knew something about it before he came because really more you friend you know so he must of been in Scotland I think a nicer way was and it's sad to just play football we started to do the things like . It's very much play The very much the way we started Bill Shankly because all we played was 5 a side we didn't play anything else but 5 a side and that's the way trained and that's where they started play and my father was. Fagan. Bennett and shiningly So you were in the manager's side almost never last long. And the 1st. What was the way they done it was they played 5 aside and I played with them to make our 5 a side up and we played all the time stuff and the pretense of freshness and we used to play them every day and that's where. We started. When I became a street but keep up you know we're the 1st to do so I came from 5 a side you came from because I played to the. And they called me in the office one day and there was. I was a member of the shanks and Bob paid the setting there and they said we're going to play a bit a different game so all you have to practice and you've got to play right. Line in the balls and you've got to move open up and. Move up so you yes thing from them and you. Just got to kick him and. It was from 5 a side and we actually started losing less and less goals that than anybody else in the league because that was a very radical way of doing things football wise isn't it because goalkeepers nab that came out of their penalty areas 1st Aki the call shows you not make what he did 6 get back and you get back to your goal but. We started losing last and last goals than anybody else. Because the idea being that the defenders pushed further up so that there's a lot of space between the penalty area and they do it today. Because all it happened was there's no way to hold themselves you know the way they dive in and fullback which they do quite often forwards they started off that I took my position from. The 4 so when they moved up they took their position for the front man then if their defenders of the ball I was the goal not just stay there to make them kick it close to space especially the way it worked all the way and if the big ball ball you know I'm not so it worked and it completely changed the game I remember it was that they. Would be there and he came. And he's talking to us and not and he said that's the 1st time a team will love him play as outfield players on. And he went to Manchester and he was a big dinner and he stood up and said the story I've been to a game today that I saw a team play in with 11 players so Shankly wasn't just this wonderfully inspirational footballing character he was a real football think it was me oh yes he went right into every detail they sent people all over the place to take a look at teams and look at that and it really was you went into it any change the whole way we played football and played 5 a side and I was speaking to John last year and he said he'd been in London when watching Arsenal train and he said we're doing the exact same thing as Waited door after was playing 5 a side Bill would never sign and it was uncomfortable in the ball everybody had to Bill to take a ball and give a ball and that's all it was about the game. It was the simple notion he had of pass a move it was not an isolated and his trade in the region a shame thing all passed and move past and move and it really did that were it really did what was it like when this you saw this influx of new talent and Ronnie 8 You've mentioned the Colossus has. Called him in I mean St John and others and and brick by brick piece by piece he was building this this new Liverpool Yeah. I mean I don't know a lot of the things they don't know about it but he signed off they got Ronnie and . Peter Thompson came from Preston and. Geoff strong I think 6465 you played against court on a night much like we beat them 21 and he signed him off from Arsenal and it was a bit like did you know money could play anywhere Geoffrey really was good so the season when you came out of the 2nd Division of the season Liverpool came out of the 2nd Division a great start to watch and on the foundations we were being lying yes there were other because we started the. First Division and we were going along no great just under half way but I. It took as he said all we've got to do and he had a meeting with us and it took years and he said we've got 5 points by Christmas and if we get 35.3 Christmases I will be safe and we're going to. Go on from there boys will go on and on and on never stop. And he was right the mom was right he was a wonderful storyteller was in the I'm a wonderful ability to tell stories to the players that no matter if they were true or not everybody believed everything that the chunky saddle of the Sun Yes well he must know something for the way tells a story and he knew that money old players and he talked about old players that played with Bennett was a same the chip to do all the usual players and and for him Bob Paisley Robin Bennett and Joel Fagan to get on so well and for all those years after. They must have been they must have been like a team as well as same as the team because you want to where you go and if there's something on the Liverpool the most players are there from the 65 to. Just one of these things they don't know the 65 teams and it's just the way what was it like when you were 1st given your opportunity under Bill Shankly always great up let me begin when we got beat one Jimmy finally broke his finger on they said you've waited long enough and waited about 5 years he said you can do it son you can do right to snuff and I would say I just the same as ever now and it was right because I went in the chamber the 2nd game I got picked to play for Scotland on the 23 by then to see my 1st half of Scotland so it was right for the most annoying thing about players and what they did and the build up to the 1st 1st Division title on the Shankly What was that like after promotion and this sort of this new Liverpool Well it was great because it was a long time. You know I think it was 50 last time it ever was when anything like not just the hole was made. Supporters say just. Pull supporters and you can do enough we used to take as we come back from training one day and he would tell us we. Just want you for an hour lots of people so she's with us. And would like to meet us I mean you have got to go cast down to these people so she. And he went with everybody and we. Did it was the players to the people and every week one planet to go. You go to see these kids and all that he said that and then you know how lucky you are. And when you consider winning the title in the sixty's the 1st time I don't think more than 13 players were used it was it was incredible to watch their team play. I mean today. Everybody's injured today but. Over the field but it must have been a. Lot because we get very few very very few injuries and we were people I was if you people people it knows today these injuries I don't know where they come from all the strains are pulled muscles I just don't know they were good football is right there in that side of fantastic football. You're very lucky that it all plays a say build. Comfortable on the ball I mean burn could play you know lawless many that could be one of the fastest players but all they were great on the ball and he had begun in the middle and he won nearly every had. Peter Thomson Stevenson was a great positive fabulous boss of the ball and he had Peter on the left ring. To get to. That happens. A great frontline as well when you look at all the goals the. School Roger was a. Good friend but he's a good friend of mine Roger and I. Need to get whole p. . Pull off the left foot or right foot which makes a great great player that's exactly what he could do in saying it was like he displaying initials and really but then again you had 2 men together but as you say there's always so many injured I would say. Roger 42 again. You can bet $55.00 games played together for the faulty so there wasn't that many in just one when Roger was a bit older manger it's 18 months older me it's all. Transport their business and culture and I was a great friend Roy Rogers of Peter same age as me we used to play just in the farmer's field behind because I think and the whole village was all about not like today but in the whole village. And used to be a brick wall of the garbage and Roger didn't have good ball control and we got fed up watching him with a tennis ball a left right left right foot and he was. Control was a good way to go playing somewhere else when he said all our kids do it again and I thought I was doing left right from left right from the wall brilliant he's a great not before and I didn't know what it was which other foot it came to both laughed on right. Make room Roger we were playing Chelsea were playing Chelsea and. I said. To. Keep you on the left hand side he said you have to keep going inside and he would beat them and he scored I said you should write a paper. And since you had this incredible debut didn't it because he played against Everton in the in the senior cup which was big licks in those days. And school to have to have a. Go before for free all I can remember but he did not was a mate at Liverpool I was a main team was made but it was so good. Arion really was brilliant on the effort it really could spring is one of those a the only one I would like Enter was a German fella. He was older than I need was a Say I need to wait in could wait for the ball coming. When he got up waited and waited and then he had a date and he should stay out a long time what was Shankly like with the instant tell me it was the respect to. The Scottish thing and the sort of characters they both were oh yeah. I never had Bill Shankly swear. Never swore and you won't believe that you never swore. Everybody swear in. But you never swore. He was not to swear was winning the league title these days for Liverpool fans he is is the major prize because they haven't won it for such a long time but I think for Liverpool fans in the 1960 s. It was the f.a. Cup That was the big one wasn't it because Liverpool a never won the f.a. Cup efforts and wanted in 96 that one in 1033 and and it was the prize it was the glory of Wembley that Liverpool always eluded Liverpool that got to the semifinal on a few occasions and $965.00 was the year when that all changed and what was it like was the ripple effect as the cup run began to build maybe Tommy Oh yes we are there I think we played Chelsea 3 or 434 weeks before for the final and we. Would beat them in the semi but we play them in London and you train you always on past the twin towers you're going into London my stash. Boyish will go to Chelsea and will be there and he said what he. Really did believe you have got to do it and then when we got there we thought we've got to win it because he's built himself for us to win this goal but it was a fabulous was the real confidence going into that semifinal with Chelsea that you could get to the final because Chelsea decent side then went there and so many of the Sammies knows those who played Villa Park when they yes and plus they were a young side. Were there some good player Bobby Tomlin really good players we'd played against. On the Wednesday anway and with one of the toss of the coin I thought we'd be finished. And they've been waiting all week for us and we think we're reaching want to when they were odds on to when Chelsea I don't think we gave them a. Really I think it was too much of. A brilliant I think it was just being made you know. So when Billy back in. Leeds united your opponents are another side with great similarities almost to Liverpool because they've been through the dark days and. Done for Liverpool don't have you done for Leeds. A great side then as well for where there was 2 or 3 good sides and they were and. Looked a good side and I think in the final they felt they were going to win the definite thought they were going to when but that if I don't think that turned out really that day I know we only just managed to win but I think too much was going for us too much going on for us can you remember what it was like in the build up to the f.a. Cup final in the city of Liverpool and around where you lift. Well . There was a lot of people go into the final but. We hadn't made no idea to want to Liverpool Roger and I won't because I don't not many people at Casanova's day before I went to see what the people was like that everything was what it meant to people in Liverpool and what this man was. Frightening what it meant you've got to when it was it wasn't what you've got to when 1st time ever and that was it was frightened by the whole the city. But it wasn't people from Crewe even go in the winter you knew which train were going to Wembley did you go down on the 1st day and we stayed . Where it was like a like an old like an old folks home the 1st day we were there were no training. Bill came just that you had a complaint. Complain about men. In shorts and he said saw. Your tracks or when you're a woman on the field it. Was a good start to the final. When you look at the City of a preparation. It seems now but I mean they go down days and days before and they have that the magic for the Wembley suits and the whole lot of runs in the towers and that's fine and dandy but from a football is perspective I'm not sure whether that makes it better or totally it's all about the game as a course it is my soul about the game and I do remember but it really did it as what the all the t.v. Cameras were. In those days on all day saying in a b.b.c. It was an all day thing and wasn't fantastic yeah there was an all day thing that was great there because they were 1st thing in the morning and the players get on the bus and had to go right out and when you got to Wembley. It was fantastic I was absolutely fantastic we you. In the build up to the fun of the morning of the game didn't you really have a sort of yes every suffer from but. Close together you know it didn't really matter because usually the once a month blows a whistle from the Nasm gone you know but I think we've been we've been together a lot better we've been playing that well we actually did think we win when you know playing well and when we got to. The tunnel which Shanks finish is look at look at this grass by population I can play on and you can't play anywhere will play him off a failed boy that. They had and when it started and it started raining and it rained all the game but we were we actually played very well so do you have many recollections of the game it isn't one of those games either that that's widely available. You don't see at all I know I'm always very few but you know really I mean just got done very early on when we went over the ball to Johnny and broke his collarbone and played on a color but it took a couple of things but. That's indicative of Jerry Baron and the fact that he's is hunger is desire for the team but also. I'm sure that may be it was Jerry's belief in Bill Shankly as well and the fact that he wanted to play through the pain barrier for him and for Liverpool Yes a pub you're probably right there Mark Ne Ne it was great. Really missed it he's a fabulous still my fabulous fella. It did and to play on a half time I went into halftime and. Pace was talking chairman. But was saying Leave him alone as any right anyone writes an extra time and he crossed the ball for one of the goals today I mean I could imagine a day with broken collarbone to dominate it played with it I don't think I missed a tackle either Still he was still going in for tackle for the obsolete fantastic and so the final whistle goes when Billy Liverpool of won the f.a. Cup for that for the 1st time in their history what's that like for you Tommy for. You for you all came from wherever Roger and I came from the history of Liverpool we didn't know when we 1st joined but then top and I know my dad my dad was sitting beside an old man it came from Australia and he said I can die and I was told my dad after seeing the pool when the coach for the 1st time I was amazing amazing thing I'm sure you'll f.a. Cup winners' medal still proud a place for us yes it is yes. Which is true story as I had to plan for the cult and I add it all the game after the thing pictures I'm walking with the. I'm a medal I walk on with it and I would go and then that's when I forgot about the plants at night there was a knock on my door and it was Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley said you got. Chopped no idea what it was and I said I don't know and he said. Yeah same thing. He said Was it all wish time when he lost the measure of the court but I had no idea what it was. And I want the thing was finished the story was good because I didn't know and John and Ronnie had to cope he declared to cope but they could remember what they'd done with the cope when he got in the fellow had taken off and put it behind a Bosh behind a desk in the reception they'd got in the hotel you know what town they got but even Ronnie didn't they would he came for a lot even know where the cold so they got out and away that what happened was we went to the do it night show should make shanks and he said you're all right the base is there at the base of the cops asked on the set and you know what it was true story that it was and Southend on a coach he said and that's just as you would away from Billy Bremner volley. Funny you say that you know about holding the plinth for some reason that almost used to be the goalkeeper's tradition to. Record what we always went to. The cop in your gut but I didn't know what. This year would be talk about things and I said well we were worse and you lost to cope we could remember what really could be drunk not much champagne in the dresser drawer and he said it was only when he asked for the with a cup was we didn't know and he checked and the father the doorman over it was a receptionist at taking off the money and put it behind the desk What was it like in the dressing room. For the 1st time. Even to say that we actually did you know when the coat for the 1st time after all I. Can remember what Shanks was like because I can imagine that that was jumping out of his chest. Well you know I think it was so much. Time was absolutely amazing for the man and. Did he give an extra special speech of achievement of recognition of what you've done and. Had never been done before but. Right that was your next. And the next people. People. Saw it for us I remember playing the hand I think for that she did at Everton Scotland when we played probably 63 as well. And. How to treat was manager of England and Shanks is manager of Scotland. They'd never been in the room where he was Shankly so. Testimonial and he came in to Dad and in front of us and. That we can beat we can be taking lend weight can beat England and he started. And I could see Sunday but I. Don't know what we what we got here and there should be said for the 1st thing he said it's a friendly boss affair there's no show singing for a friend like you were frightened. It was like a little address a rope but Shanks he actually frightened. Wonderful man was there and you hit on something there the desire to do it for them to do it for the people he was the original man of the people. In times and he loved them. Red and White. Was always ready you know ever needed and he the Cosby loved to call up he really did love all askew a lot of appeal supporters I was aim to weigh him with was Liverpool and it was the greatest club in the world you know any Dutch legal and he hadn't done it and I think when he 1st got I don't know if he thought that when he 1st went to win a pole but it didn't take him long I must mean the people I knew looked after he sometimes gave fans a lift to know our coach if they knew the road walking he would stop the coach and bring on the coach and take him back to Liverpool. On the way to the lodge airlifts to struggle and boss of know it. I mean when we're not up to that wonderful story of Shankly walking around the pits and getting the adoration to think after another league title. Of the cop and a policeman stood on a fan scarf as he was trying to to make sure that there was a sort of. And he had Mohnish then he. Just stood on that man's life yeah yeah that's right that's exactly what he said Mr Donahue life. Freely whole life what was was there and had time for everybody wanted to speak to him each time for them all of. It time for the money we talked them all there really was an approachable Well I mean I know today it's a very hard today but he was approach you with anybody remember it was 60 percent to 45 I went back to Scotland. Wife and I and I did. We had a little under me and I was and I go and see in the relationship so we stayed at Butlins and we will stay there for a week and I was in Butlins camp and I've been there a bit today sort of a. Visit relations and writing about it and I had the voice. That. It came from there. A look through the window. To get me to do something and he was gone passed with a bag of balls and then the next time I saw him to improve or get me to do. The kids all playing I don't think I got paid for it like today but I wonder what would they have both arrived. At But the kids play with what was he like after a defeat toy well he handled it really well and the way didn't it show him if we beat the chain that's the best team in the world. They're the worst team we've played all season so we tried to build. And used to watch all the other team come in and used to go and watch them come in and say hello to them alone alone alone any call back and I would dress and I'm a set of genes I've just seen them all lots he said to frightened to death just look to the front end to death. And then if they'd be he would say who shot. Really was fantastic. The relationship with all the Liverpool fans with Bill Shankly was incredible the relationship with the cop was almost mystical Yeah it was the day you just loved him. The way it was and he just loved and. He used to be thought he'd taken off James Cagney because you always look like James Cagney. And he was like and but with a with a. All the corrupt When was the greatest thing in the world I don't know what we don't want to put all the Senate now I don't know how many in the cup now but in those days was 27000 and how people went in there you know I used to turn around and you know when to go for the ball to get a whole cake and it was just becoming to water and then the big go and how can people in there but in those days it was really bad to pass people over there was no fighting nothing to pass people over and have played and after the you just throw the ball between the legs like gold or just some after such all the way around is fabulous fabulous and I was completely I think that the old the old inspector Kane walking around but that was nothing else was fabulous you had a great relationship with the company all of the. Off. But for the time when the when if we started playing out when it started getting any Our goals. As I say completely changed a lot that I would have got to do the weather play No The only thing was when I played. The box I could bring people down and it wasn't a penalty it was just just a fall and they never gave yeah otherwise I'm going to get sent off quite a lot Andre off to make a great play the same way every goalkeeper full of the way it was and you had a new member you had a very distinctive look about you didn't you because it was that the mop of. The Green. Thing the flying pig but. Just about 14 stone you know gone West was 15th you know it was just been built for. I went by one year. And I went back and. Gave you this kind of diet I went back I was. Going away then and I went training and I played my 1st pre-season game when I came in off the pitch given a set. On the fight and wait here not going to hurt. Did not get some way to start hurting people again because I did trying people you know they're coming through or did they. Pick up that nickname where did it come from was was it early sixty's or was it late sixty's Can you remember I can't really remember I can't really remember when you found that supposed to be. But I did I didn't really mean out of. It they called you crazy Also they just got a little want to read The Quiet Man blend right back Did everybody have a nickname Yeah. It was called article this is the galloping. Courage Project to see if you see. When we have a little get together Peter Thompson he lives in state Portugal a Combs and it's fantastic for the these little teams can't believe it I mean even Phil Neal Stephen and because we all turn up there will only get 4 or 5 you know we have a lot. I wonder why that is is that because it was the 1st f.a. Cup winning side is it because it was part of the 1st great team the chantry pill to. Mike to be someone I just don't know but I just know that if somebody is doing some of their wants of them to go. The whole. Get on the top money stories together which is most of the same it'll last and you know these are the things same things and being with them to really lift the Cup run when you will get to get all u.s. What it really about but a lot of what I remember along with especially big Ronnie at West Brom when he picked the ball up when he thought it had a whistle and the crowd because I think I'm not sure I think as to what we're winning 21 there's only about 4 or 5 minutes to go and the ball was in the box and some to blew off whistle and run it picked the ball up and it picks it up to give to me to take a free kick I picked it up and. Roll it should have been. But alter it. There's a. Lot called public from. Yeah I don't know I don't know if I thought of all the time but you could tell look at it was frying to death and he actually I think he hit the call of. The day and then of course bolting. The Would he have a score so remember the quote was an hour to crush them when I'd happened off that college school result or a bolt in one no one involved. So and you knew then there was actual you still mentioned. That he said don't forget it was important 'd had to be always Ascalon as well what was it like for you when things weren't going so well at Liverpool and it's always everybody talks about the Watford game as being the end for the particular team yet there was nothing really to do or maybe I can do about it plus I think what happened not a must I decide I think it was good of him to do pretty much the decider but I remember the goal it was about a goal because. It was a goal but it's just because we should it was shit I want you know we had plenty of chances to win Michigan 151 but we didn't to the one chance they got and it was not was it so we can so what happened then was a terrible place station when you got being the culprit station they already were speaking to Russell. Train on the shoes day and he had arranged. A practice match for the 3rd day at Blackburn Rovers and we went in and we didn't know it was up and I commend he said these are the players it has to go and climb and. There wait for it wait for all these Dame promoting or. They got there I thought but that's up and down and they started from then I think what they were line about 3rd in a lake I think the only one about 4 games the end of the season but by the time it built a team that was there was right you know it made his decision that he wanted change because Ray Clemence took your position and I think he'd been at Anfield maybe 18 months 2 years and then you know what he said it was more of this in May He said he told me he's a veteran stage and you'll be on he said to not fear I got my 1st game. There but that and that's what happened and I but he did what you say it's them was lost a lot of games but the time the season started next year they were 1st division players you know and I saw I was give it right away you know we had our time it was great it was quite a bold move to get rid of the stalwarts like yourself when I was picked because they could have. Turned. The good it's gone right down the lake didn't win that many games Bubba Chan the next season started it done it again he had built a team again you know you say he was right and he was right because Liverpool's record after that proves that but but you mustn't thought he was right at the time or now and always thought we were going to go out we go for a few years here she Rajat already gone out of the chain Roger already gone and on both of Roger he was just going to go to bowl Roger after that and he didn't last long Roger last 2 months after he went to bowl very much to decide it was it the World Cup players at 66 Roger Jefferson all I never scored as many goals off just a lot. When you get to sound peak I think that said you know you know. We don't do it but I think you're right and we think he was right as well now if you know there but looking back with a plate on the other 10 years. 5 years but thought he was right what was it like for you working I suppose as you did individually with Ray Clemence because Could you tell when he came he was. Today the older goalkeeper the young goalkeepers you know like I was younger and. When Ray came in for me every day so I was going to be a good goalkeeper kicking wasn't very good when it 1st came but. It was great but he. Had to learn off me to come off his lying to say condition the 1st few games I played struggled really bad struggle because he wasn't going far enough out and not could he just. Go that far but from then on I mean the only thing you got 58 cups but I thought about a goalkeeper and shown they were 2 great goalkeepers at the time but for me Clements was the best because because he. Was great in the air because she was never really great in Arizona and a wonderful command of the body. Was great and. Long but a lot a lot with him but he fell Me Ok man you know there's a great scene we built up. After Liverpool you moved on to to try. An enjoyable time there was really did enjoy the club friend a little bit was a little bit as I say. Great It was like. I really enjoyed most of the crowds at their supporters were fabulous I was in charge that day when I went they have Russell and Johnny King and I think after that was bang Ronnie but I don't money and I think it's 74 and I knew I wouldn't play again. Like it was a government. You had 3 years to try me yeah I. Really enjoyed it enjoyed it may bring running here was fabulous Steve Perkel always had a ball he was. You know they really was but Liverpool is is the great passion of your life still isn't it. You know. That all of the crack I mean you wouldn't believe it I mean it's. From school 59955. 55 you won't believe. People. Quite a lot younger but. Once he never forgot. That must be really heartwarming for you when you feel now and still to have that love for the fans. Before the game. Yes it's very very good in a very good to us you know so it's fabulous and you got this great report with the former players Foundation which is it's thriving Yes it's very very really a good thing for all the local charities it's a local charge of a place and all. The Walker Walker is well let me do all those things and if we keep all local We have all of our local and alimony we get we have a thing I know for a finance is a true story we went to Germany and $981.00 this it was it was a year or something charging and we played. A big shot of the World Cup team was playing in Munich. There we went. I mean everywhere in the fall. And you know if. The goal was. We had reason. For this when we didn't just have the original the original we'd force. You know what we had for before so with us the same went for my letter Roger came back and said there are 6 of the original James Loy say he said that's what's changed but it was not it on the lines that whole thing does that yeah yeah I don't believe she was just going to. Tell me.
