Radio and there's the site. The station the. B.b.c. Radio Good evening I'm in Canada and tonight we celebrate a very special anniversary 40 years this very night Liverpool won the European Cup for the very 1st time I will be talking to some members of that Liverpool side that night we've got some cracking archive as well much of which hasn't been heard since 1977 I'll explain more shortly we've got so much to get through a special guest to talk to as well. But it was quite a journey to the final from Crusaders in Northern Ireland to trap song spore of Turkey where Bob Paisley was unhappy after the game to Cincinnati and of France and york of Switzerland and that's even before they got to Rome. I love her being here downfield. I'm going to have a Norman on inside and it's going to be a film ill stepping up as a kid just 18 minutes gone so far but so they like what are the sentinel who Brad Hoover called back to go he must do most film was left hand so the holy by one goes until after 90 minutes of the European Cup but sounds like Bill Neil going 1st European goal of the peace. Girl may take his camp in ways we know absolutely nothing about them in fact at this moment in time we don't even know where the place is but I'm confident inside help and we will have quite a lot of these. Local Yeah well because youngsters you guys are these are like this and you always seem. Well well you know that it's Ok to be if you're going to get up. There with a pink glove that's the goal. And then you know p.s. In the game I think. We were just unlucky that. They got to just you know that otherwise there's no do you. Spent trying to help let's go get a said. Dallas. Looking back. I want to go $700000.00 thought the thought of them both because David part of that for the well like oh it would almost surely will happen because the semifinal of the opium cup. Just to filter down here that little pulled up scored again. Already got not going after people across the aisle for the last that. Had So let's say the ball bounced away from that part of the process. That. Is one of the more important to get to the European Cup final it is a big thing the lads are looking forward to. Being complacent about this. So we're there we are that's hopefully set the scene for you I am delighted to say in the studio alongside me tonight John Keith writes a broadcast the Daily Express 977 am I right in saying hi to you and Charlie Lambert writer broadcast at Liverpool Echo 977 is that what you've just heard that we haven't even got to the final yet is that started to to bring it all back to what it does I mean Funnily enough I didn't go to any of the games before the final really even though I was on the sports stuff of the echo but being a mere witness now for my role in those days I was a subeditor and occasionally I would do Charlie Rose reports and things like that I didn't get to watch the likes of Liverpool but I did get to do some evident game so it was a big surprise when I was told I was going to the final but the one that really grabs me that I'm sure it will do John as well was the commentary on David factor of scoring against Tatiana and that was a big night and it wasn't just a big night for Liverpool it was a big night for Everton because the Us night when Everton had the replay of the League Cup final against Aston Villa at Hillsborough and that was one of evidence although they didn't win the game as one of their greatest nights when he had lost risk or a fantastic goal they came back from the dead and they took it to another replay and I remember the course we in the press box were following that game but listening to the output from Anfield as well and it was just a brilliant night and great to hear some of that archive there John that clip of Bob Paisley after the game in trouble while I was at all the games and tribes on the. Worst place in all the years I've travelled in Europe I've ever set foot in I'm told it's improved now it's how to improve if it was dreadful the hotel was that well I would call it a hotel which would know what else to call it but it was dreadful and at 4 in the morning the local mosque started the town noise the players got no sleep Ray Clemence was the the wisest man he brought a big huge box of cow British chocolate with him and that and survived and when you said he could hardly get off the dressing room bench or drop zone he felt so well and it was he that conceded the very controversial penalty that cost them the game but not the tie obviously and Bob was see then because the lights went out in the dressing room before the game there was mosque growing on the walls as he called it the pig's bladder for a bowl we heard that yeah yeah and it was just appalling so to get through that I think to lose only one nil I think was a great relief to them to combine this with the one Yeah well we'll talk about some of the other games along the way and of course the final as well as an event going on in Liverpool actually today tonight the Hilton down there it's a ticketed event but some of the x. Plays then I think we can join our reporter James Mann for fear some with the man who made the fog's legs made the Swiss roll and he was punching back you know 40 years ago Joey Jones Great great to see him and Happy Anniversary Show thanks it's . You know I think I'm a I'm a theater shows that the sports is you know. I mean when you think back to All in years ago many fortunes sold everything and you know they're trying to cross it's a role to watch that when you become the series trying all the great memories and just come back to that day itself what do you remember before the game on talking about the journey to the ground and and how you got to the ground as well. The food you never got carried away with Birsa. Last see. What won the league title last couple for 5 days prize and you will find and to be fair Liverpool were never. You know they have to go away when they leave and Underwood's you down as in what reason if they cope you know you just go on to the next game because that's a way typical where that sign with you know pulp Asians will fade funnyman will have an status except if you're on the floor and they then you have to cheat people so yeah it was I was in box you know and the opponents in in bunch of blood because the you you face them and you just just a couple of years before in the life of coach yet I didn't play not one but something that mentioned God but similar groups even though they had to do it to achieve that law will come when he's in it and they had it outside the European Football League in Alan Symonds and so you know that there were no we're no mugs. Let's be fair you know is it in a little easy as he would do but Paisley give us a specific role supply and I don't even give you any instructions you know if they give anybody shocks and singleness to me I think it was what I was just trying that the opposition would have of you know I think nobody would see. That sees they were really cuts and f.a. Cup final and you know deserved to be in European Cup finals and I must say it was easy easy and it wasn't easy because I think that our members you know Krauts made a good save you know to keep it in the game early on and obviously. It's all be one school the 2nd one you know when I had it from you're not over the penalty it's like a 3 austerity image of the field and goal. There was no way back for them and have to ask you about the bana what point did you did you notice it because it's gone down in Liverpool folklore hasn't it well the yeah and you know well. I think that much not but as I do the medal you know because you know Phil downie and Jimmy Collins and sadly persuade Allie. They made about no matter what I saw you know I couldn't believe you know with so many famous plays and a little Che you know the Chinese the house all names you know Dempsey and pleasure to know what I was to suggest it's just a little bullshit from you know from the halls and such of a banner you know when you mentions I down there you know or so this certainly was a for me scale. You know maybe it's unteachable fairly high on their own for about 20 roof over 20 years when I left college and got to be sensible and hence wise I think it was about city the metal privacy so big I had to drop it I got each and the only place I would like to go back to. Was little vocal and I said it many changes for you know you won't believe how many people of us who do want to buy that but I said Tom I got itself I said this is suppose a little make up on and the only place that your part to say. And some days since I went back they said we sold me a speed screen up in the the newsstand. So I haven't seen it for a few years the shelves against Joey great to speech essentially to rank uses I think you can. Travel b.b.c. Radio. The singer miss for you know it's a 2 way street though because the kids on test told me can really give it to me sometimes as well. Said. Brad for as we days from 7 on b.b.c. Radio Merseyside. B.b.c. Radio. Sports. And welcome back I mean Kennedy were looking back on the anniversary which is today 40 years since Liverpool. Back to win the European Cup for the very 1st time John Keith and Charles Lambert in the studio with me and it was great to hear from Joey Jones there and no instructions John from Bob Paisley Well that's well Bob's overriding instruction was very simple in Rome because he got them together and gave one of the most famous pretty much messages of all time he said the last time I was in a row was on the back of a tank deliberating we've beaten them once you go out and beat them again and that was it and I thought they went and. You played the clip earlier about fact lifts goal all he said to fact live on the night against the team was go out and run at them you know and that's what he did and you know something I'll simply. And also Charlie listening to Joey there you got him you can tell he was getting a bit emotional about the banner and said that the band meant more to him than the metal Yeah and I think that says a lot doesn't it about the communication between Liverpool f.c. Players and their supporters and how much it means to them and how much it meant to them in that era I think there was a feeling that everybody was really in it together and you know thinking back to 977 the tales that we had on the ACA and how people were getting to Rome you know I mean in those days there was no easy Jet It wasn't quite as simple as it is these days people were there was. A train van Ryan's Express was was it was chartered and took people on the cross-Channel ferry and across all the boundaries of Europe down to Rome and that was a massive exodus in itself and people were getting to to Rome any which way and was selling everything including several grandmothers to get money to go to the final because it was such a big deal and he says it just mattered so much we we have a clip on our show tomorrow at New Brighton floral pavilion they have the cops Roman carnival we've got a supporter who did exactly what Charles said he went on the train and he got a ticket with just said to Roman back we've actually got a picture of the ticket on the show and he's telling his story of what it was like there was all show there was a strike in Belgium which actually added to the length of the journey took them 8 years to get there but as Charles said it was very much a founds final wasn't that leads nicely actually into into this because a Liverpool fan Liam Lloyd has been in touch with us about a poem that was written by a Reds fan who was amongst the thousands that went to Rome in 1977 it's an epic tale as you mentioned there about the journey it was written a few days after the European Cup final and hasn't seen the light of day for years the man who poured his heart out into verse sadly is no longer with us his name is Jimmy Dempsey a Liverpool fan from Kirby it's quite long actually but here a short extract from it read by another Liverpool fan who was in Rome in 1977 playwright Dave Kirby It was Monday night in Liverpool on the 20. We've reached your Pinku final Now we were on our way the final was a people a the no opponents but he she mentioned. The bombs our ship is your new war now we could get our own back the original plan for the genie is for the saint to go to France they diverted the saintly Belgian and I to Germany across the Alps in suspense and then it's where telly the players lions or the whistle blew and the game was on the way and I thought I'll remember that's when see 5th or May the pill stalk the ball around it was post the emotion One for All and all for want a scene with cement the Steve ocean the clamp down on the Germans with educated suppression and sucked them methodically with a style of console the gushing great women's play the blind and kept the jammers of the finest goalie in all the wells that psyche. Sue fullbacks Nealon Jones at the chairman's weeping while so many Smith and I'm a news alternated with this sweep in the midfield players went forward Kennedy Kalyan sorry Mark when any danger threatened they willingly fell back the plea from Nonis run riot I weigh Keegan in case Sam is in Caledon forwards and I were being cute so who defend the wisdom and said he scores abuse the crowd when presented she's anger out loud many examples we get only going to suggest making Sally mac lord mayor here Bill. If I live to be a hands on the Get that say when the who won the European Cup in the many months or may I have this feeling the me bones and I'll sign explain it with the scene we have and the way we play we'll be the 1st British team city to. Be there reading that nice stuff is now under very prophetic as of course the following season they were told every time the European Cup obviously on its way to winning 3 European Cup So the only British manager to do it one of only 2 Carlo Ancelotti the other and the only man to do with one club so it's a miracle getting to the stadium obviously the fans have got there you've got there what can you remember what conditions were like was it was the press box in you know good working order because it was the old Olympic stadium wasn't in it was open then it's been covered sense but she was Ok Jones was in it I don't think there were I don't think there were any any problems that I can remember I flew out on the day of the game I think it was yeah that's right I flew out with some supporters on one of the planes that had been chartered for fans. John I'm actually going to reform yes he went with the team Yeah and I stayed with the team in the Holiday Inn which was legendary That night after as I'm sure will come on to that and then flew back with the team the following day and course that was just unbelievable Well let's get to the final and 40 years ago this very night. I don't think. I. Am. I am. But I should mention. That at the bedside of the Thank God I could have European Cup 1st time find a candidate short to cheat and try to get up some way for the return of the that is that the day the as. The day. And that's why no I think you can. Do that with. This. Session it's got to be said that could take a little so I would think that when we get up and have a little. That's right you can run. Through I. Thought it. Interesting was there I tell you what's exciting just listening to him though you know what the out it was a terrific game you say Wasn't this yeah I'll settle it once I've been in games you know are listening to what Bob Paisley was saying before and what you think are you never told them what to do whatever happened I don't know but Liverpool played a wonderful brand of fluent football that night yes that it was almost like watching one of the great Dutch teams but I think it home them to that precision having to Charles I mean that was the way they did so they knew how to go out and play today they did I mean there and there wasn't it wasn't a typical British team with a big center forward John Toshack wasn't playing the number 9 shirt we won he was ruled out the day the morning of the game in China and Bob Paisley turned that to advantage Yes I having an extremely quick moving quick thinking set of play well Steve highway said it was his favorite role although he was an international winger of great repute Bob used to talent particularly in Europe play centrally and just Rome many look to do their number one particular opponent just Rome and it was a great great attributes I have but just listening to those close I mean not saved by Ray Clemence from stealing was probably the turning point of the game and he picks that out of his with the money few days ago as possibly the greatest save of his career and certainly a very telling one and then Keegan who could have had Charles 3 or 4 penalties before the warmth that was given at half time he said so as they walked off he said to Bertie Vox he said Bertie in England we change shirts at the end not and not after 20 men. One of my roles was to. Write a piece for The Daily Post the following day about Keegan's last game because we all knew that he was leaving for s.b. Homburg and the copy had to be flown over 90 percent of his it half time and I was a bit anxious because I think he will what if he has a bad game what he's anonymous and has nothing to nothing to write about but national faqih in was the stupendous night his control his vision his is zest and appetite for the game it was all the things that you think a great About Kevin Keegan were more distilled in that one match and as John says Bertie vote was trying to bad luck him and he never got near in the end in the end brought him down for the crucial penalty Well earlier on we heard from Joey Jones speaking to our reporter James mouth in Liverpool tonight and let's let's rejoin James now Terry McDermott 40 years to the day since that night in in Rome does it feel like 40 years just seems like last week. We joke really I thought a long long time 40 years ago it was a fantastic occasion great memories and you can't take that away from us and many of the supporters here tonight would have been in row one will remember how you scored that 1st goal you just just talk us through it yeah I mean. You better votary which one the best. Players defended the wells ever since playing for. Betty folks and I just find it hard to believe that he left at such a big gap because it was so more concerned about not. Coming in could he pick them up everywhere he went because it was determined that he wouldn't score a goal and he couldn't talk on the far side of the County area and there is such a big gap and I ran through it which is beyond belief early. Next year is probably like game Thank God he did you know because when I seen the room the goalkeeper on that me. 6 for the 9 at some time or other this gangly when I seen him come and showered and out I thought Get rid o. You're going to get a lot of and I got written Luckily when they met and that great occasion and not that very much so you want. Why there was the equaliser that is a good save as well from from Ray Clemence but eventually you saw that the game out yeah yeah it could then that we were the better team on the night and without a doubt but I totally did that seem a good time united for days earlier but we got beat so what I think we did so totally These ads are when I just said. When we got back to 11 I think Clem made some great save 2 great save the thing and before we got our 2nd goal and the month we got the 2nd goal I was fronting that couldn't see them score and again and then we got the policy would seal the photo so great occasion never to be forgotten and for to see it again on television when they talk about seems getting that that 1st trophy and sense of you it was the fish the European Cup little pool water what was the impact do you think on getting now that the European Cup and on what followed in the years to come do you think it did provide the platform without a shadow without you know you know and they did wrong things in there like the league championships and f.a. Cup and 65 was a. Very great occasion you know but this was there one that we all want to unlock Chung's want to join with desperate to win the Champions League just Champions League now if you're being caught than him Shanker are desperate to do it through football pretty to actually do it 3 years after he took over and we didn't win not only fair share but secondly at 30 and I'm off for the next 10 years we've just won so many trophy have been frightened so yeah it was great it was great it wasn't a straight for the players for that for the coaching staff and the manager but it was great for the fans and about the celebrations went on for about 10 years in kind and then it was that strong for true 2448 hours but it was then it's a day that you never forget Terry thanks for speaking to us is on our pleasure Terry McDermott's talking to James Mao for then the all important 1st skull just to settle a nurse took half an hour or so to school 27000000 is it I think yes. Well it was a very well taken goal to Cali one the ball and Cherry said Keegan created the space and he's very self-deprecating Terry McDermott as he said it was later said I'm known from a blind side rooms mainly to the bar but he said this night time around and did it did it right but he was a very good player he was a terrific player Terry miked I'm another player who came with a with a reputation for being a good player but Bob Paisley somehow got more out of these players absolutely super Absolutely yes and he mentioned that as well the fact that the cup final was just a few days earlier Liverpool were coming on the back of this chart their work as though they were on for the trouble because you know they won the league championship that got to the Cup Final this was beaten Everton in the semi final to get the Cup Final. And they should have been Manchester United no question about it I thought they were far the better team but unfortunately I think to make a score to make a school the goal and go lovely Well Stanley the United goals were all the poor goals but Emily Hughes looked back on the dressing room and the trip home as the reason why they won the European Cup because he said Ray Clemence at one point just took a running leap into the bath and said I'm going to get blankety blank blank tonight that sort of changed the mood the big thing was we all stood on what foot station for hours and hours Liverpool's charter train was delayed there was a breakdown further up the track by the time we got on the train that almost forgot about Wembley and they actually had sugar fights on the train the players with the little cubes of sugar we got in July and she'd about midnight and I think it was forgotten it was we're going to win the European Cup So his range Absolutely yeah well before we came on air I had the great pleasure of speaking to a World Cup winner a man who played 231 times for Bossi munching the last back he played 53 times for West Germany winning the World Cup in 1974 he's now the vice president of back. Before 2 years ago tonight he was playing in the European Cup final against Liverpool right up on a few of us 1st of all. Little But the point was that it was very warm and by the way. There was such a big. Team of little ball on the field. 31 it was a tight match in my point of view but. After 60 minutes because we couldn't. Keep the result and then the loss that was. It was it was over can you remember what you were thinking before the game were you confident it's been a tough a tough route to the finals for munching Gladbach you had a couple of close games against Bruges and to Reno and Dynamo Kiev there was not a matter of. The matter was that we had a couple of battles in the us before was Liverpool. And that was the point that we're always thinking about the night before including all team mates. Sitting together and do you remember that we was beat beaten to Liverpool the year before $21.00 and then we struggled in Liverpool $30.00 and you know all this experience made finally the result for for us that will be a tough game. So yeah became a tough game for us still and the point to be honest it was. 3 days before we had the the important match for Bruce Himanshu La Beouf we needed a draw in by Munich to win the championship and we made it even him by Munich that was 38 degrees short it made us a little bit tired but however that was not a reason for for the Win a little what are you aware of the fact that Liverpool went into the game having just lost the f.a. Cup final to Manchester United. We know that meant we know exactly also that little boy was. Indeed. They've got a big big spirit for English teams stand up after defeat. Is easy to handle then for this time a German team so and they did it and they became very strong in 1st off and the 2nd half as well of course you had a great side you must've been such a huge occasion for munching black you'll 1st European Cup final and you had some of the great names both evokes the was you self the was Alan seaman sunu school the goal Lee stealing cats. Or was a couple of international They made 3 years before there was a cap and the key of ever seeing wash as I said all mentioned before was not only the weather condition bad it was also the respect we got before for 4 English teams and particularly for Liverpool because their battles and the Magister we made the years before against Liverpool I think so we had 44 matches before we made in 77 the final in Rome showing that that was the respect. And actually the good performance of Liverpool site and was Kevin Keegan the player the Munchen got back really had to targets on the night he was one of them's soul if I was was also good Kennedy was good the whole defense was very tough. Show and that makes even our strike us life for 90 minutes very very tough. To find his islands even us as you mention there was a great great player. Alan Stevenson was awarded after this season for the best player in Europe so there was somebody who played against Liverpool but the Liverpool side at this lies was the best bet I won although you did as we mention that after Liverpool have gone in front in the in the. 2nd off he got an equaliser through Alan Simonson and at that point did you think right we've turned this around now I wish we smelled a little bit early on or was a little bit of a chance to win the match coming back but then Liverpool created a couple of really good good. Text. Kevin rush on spending. So on then and all these things. We gave up the respect back for this Liverpool side so and that was. Disturbing our our performance and obviously Liverpool won school too for the goals and won the European Cup What was that what was the mood obviously one of huge disappointment in your dressing room yeah the worst of all of so everybody was crying more or less because nobody was a couple of players in the squad. You know after the final whistle that never ever giving a 2nd chance to run a ball off it's really great to talk to you thanks so much for taking the time out and I know the at the anniversaries is maybe one that I'm not sure how it's being felt over in in Germany as far as much English back a concern but it's great of you to take part in our program thank you very much thank you very much for your opportunity Thank you bye bye Ronda Bon off the talking to us and on the line and may have heard some of that is his Jimmy case good evening Jimmy beginning then if you heard much of that from Ron about off there but he was a good play and they had some good plays in that side that night Jimmy didn't say Oh without a doubt you know we knew we knew before the game you know whereas you know I wasn't necessarily involved in international duties like you know the Latin in the team but you knew the players that was your but you got out again upon up because as one of the you always say one of the harder shots around a good shoot from the stands and. Very very good player and just just. Because a situation where I used to argue with somebody Smith all the time up to say that it wasn't a got that had been if I was nuts of 2 fellows off of. One of them was just happens that we're going to follow that was right behind me good stuff in the studio tonight you me with Charlie Lambert and John Keith as well and about 40 years ago Jimi of the it sounds like your memories of that night are still very sharp Yeah I mean you know everything that goes on you sometimes you believe it or not your love your life revolves around those times because all the things what we do and you know supporters and things and they recollected in New York brings it all back you know. Week in and week out so another being the force is one of those things that probably I was one of the younger ones on the night you know just 20 just me 20 the week before so so it's it's it's right up there with everything and we talked about the fact that it came just a few days after the f.a. Cup final which mixed emotions for you because you lost the game but your one of the great goals that Wembley I think have a seat in an f.a. Cup final. Yes. This was a big disappointment because you grow up and I know we have the big European country. The next few days on the Wednesday but you dream you know when when you're watching it over the years the f.a. Cup final and how it must be and you actually get there and obviously missed out on in the equalizing getting a decent people say the best goal of the game which it was but it wasn't that. You know losing the On that note it was a disappointment because as I said before I was one of the younger members so possibly you know the end experience you take it a little bit more than. Like the likes of Tommy and. Hi Jim it's junkie for you you in fine fettle the tomorrow night at the floral pavilion over the months many months thank you reminded. Me 1st curtain call Jim I enjoyed them so much because meeting supporters and just so in a bottle Yes it's fantastic it really is brilliant brilliant and I hesitate to to ask this one to me but tell us about their goal because you and Phil Neil got in a bit of a mix up. Yeah I mean well put it this way of Phil and I are together we take the blame on each other but if we're the part I always blame him. Because what if what if was I pass the ball back obviously towards Phil Phillips moved the pitch a little bit further he's going on a little bit of a or overlap I think he just moved up out of position if I invited back to do it 9 times out of hand with me I was short and go to Phil but on that occasion obviously went to consumers and still at the strike it was a great strike by and by the way I think it was fantastic also to be ready to be doing Clements for us I must I must thank me a little while later because I got in your opinion player of the year. I was an assist. It didn't matter in the end of course said you know what do you make me sad what happened afterwards after the game could celebrate or whatever. It was just it doesn't really you know what you've actually achieved it didn't sink in that quickly by the time we got back to the whole Salan you know the where you say the party started and you know all the things that have been document faded about the fans get and then says a fan quit and everything it was fantastic because the fans made it as well to be honest being in the room you know when everybody knows the other a massive bank. Right big must have been about when a good few feet long you know that's over the next minute the fans are walking past pick and rolls on the locals and they're like it was just a great atmosphere and it was unbelievable. Well Jimi it's great to hear from you thanks for so much for coming on the show tonight great memories I'm sure from from 1977 and enjoy your night as well which on some are a nice gesture actually out of Mara Yeah thanks. Sorry about that. Absolutely Jimi case there joining us thanks to me yet one of the younger players of course in the Liverpool side even then was not yeah indeed on the other the other fact about that game because I researched it put the book of don't call Reykjavik to Rome which jobs Liverpool's quest to with the European Cup Liverpool's team was a child playing Lucia ball from Joey Jones and Steve highway the stoled squad in fact. Munching blood back to the only former in the whole squad was Siemens on the day so things have really changed over the years those 40 years and certainly have right here Merseyside sports for Thursday night looking back on the 1977 European Cup Final some good stuff still to come stay with the. B.b.c. Radio. And once again it's Marie thanks very much still looking busy on the wrong call and side of the run call witness bridge and then a reminder this is heading towards a bridge that on the witness side in a about an hour's time half 7 until half 5 in the morning the quote from it in road to ever Right right it will close in both directions so bad that in mind and at the moment I can see speak Boulevard looking busy between Let's have a look not as far back as higher road but it has been that bad over to speak whole road would end up in u.p.c. And we've been talking a lot about the final of course but there was the roots of the final and in the quarter final stage while an epic tie against and Tatiana of France Liverpool lost the 1st like one nil and then Kevin Keegan scored a very early goal in the in the 2nd leg at Anfield synthetic an equaliser Liverpool needed to break Hannity got one of them and perhaps this maybe just maybe I'm going to say it was the most famous goal in one field history will debate it later I was . Very bored warble no more. Global warning we got covered by what they want to. Live on the ground. Buried by. The Border. Are Buried by. Now on the ground playing on the. Ground. Only day by. Let's bring in Charlie Lambert here because you brought in actually a publication that you had a lot to do with 977 a few days after the game the echo probably. A special brochure and some good photographs of that goal in there Charlie Yes And I wonder how many people across most excited got a copy of this squirreled away somewhere it's a lovely glossy publication called Liverpool champions of Europe which went on sale for the princely sum of one pound Now remember we started work on the same day that we got back from Rome the sport so that even some Kelly called us into a conference room he said right we're going to get this this magazine out and you know what ideas have you gotten people chipping in their ideas and I ended up writing a fair amount of it and thinking about now I just feel so privileged to have had anything at all to do with this and in amongst the fantastic photographs which were taken by Steve Shakeshaft Barford and the rest of the really talented post in Echo team is that iconic picture which I'm showing here now of of David Fackler after he scored the goal that's the one that I think captures everybody's imagination is not the scoring of the goal it's the reaction where he turns away and he jumps up with both arms in the air and he's about 4 or 5 feet off the ground and the whole ground behind him is absolutely a sea of people rejoicing and that number 12 shirt the iconic super sub ingrained for all time for better or for worse but yes and I think you know you say was that the greatest golden and feels history I think you could make a very very strong case to say yes it was well Ray Clemence was in goal for Liverpool that night and of course in Rome as well he's been speaking to a Radio Merseyside mark about that memorable night 40 years does this seem a long time to see many year ago does it seem like yesterday what was your feelings a bit of both actually part of me thinks it is a long time ago you know and somebody said to me oh actually I'm 50 years it's actually signed for this club so you know that is a long long time but then when you start talking about it it comes back as I was last week of watching the game date to refresh myself and course if you remember the goals but the crucial. Moments like that did your heart's tough when Bahnhof hit the post it was a moment ya think it would be the most important one for me was when Steeler broke through on the scores one or another because we'd lost against Man United on on Saturday you know we do ourselves all the best where we could and obviously we've got the lead and Simmons in the squad I want to go in there a bit of the upper hand them for of you know for 10 or 15 minutes and it was in that 10 or 15 minutes when Steeler broken it was him against me and I often think if you to score then and they went to one or would we have won it but looked at me from a I did well I don't know 1214 years of the club and one of the ones one situation is maybe cells because possible and hope is still a good hit me with it and he did hit me on the knees and it rebounded to safety and 10 minutes later Smitty ended it in the net supposed to one up so when you got to Red was it the fact that you saw the support you had that that the thing that the real motivating force of the place yeah I think so I think you know we obviously build ourselves up as much as we could we went on the pitch beforehand as all players do and we're expecting $11000.00 fans there which would be magnificent for $11000.00 fans for the expense to go out to Rome after the road into the cup final and supporters through the league program as well because the ones out there there wasn't 11000 fans there there was 26000 half the stadium was red and white people travel from all over the world to be at local 1st European Cup final all of our natural world was said in the dressing room we sort of looked at each other in the dressing room and so on and said we can't lose this game for these people they've sacrificed all sorts of it is game we need to perform and win this for them now I don't know how often you meet the plays you were with that night of your best pals but it is something you may not see the 234 years and then when you are there in together you are like a band of brothers because you went through something together but like when you see old Army veterans Come together yeah I think there is I mean obviously I can't run for. When I see some of the the legends here and hope to sell today I do see zone of them when there's a special occasion like this I mean Jerry Jones I'm seen for a long long time he's on the change he looks fitter now I did when he was playing so you know he just smashing Carcieri he was a real character in the dressing room always out of the sense that he may have been chairman Tim a brilliant in the dressing room and you need those players so it's great to see him and say a see you get back together old stories come back you remember tonges in the fantastic times you had to get it right Clements said talking to mock and something else I wanted to squeeze in because a great moment. When Bill Shankly came up to the commentary box after the game. There were sharply. Little. Coming up towards us. Just laying across the road. Wanting. A lot of panicking about some. Of the right thing the 5 o'clock am out. Crazy that you are what it is modernize it was for Bell what memories must have gone through his mind because he had tried on 3 occasions to win the European Cup what the 1st time he went very very close but sadly he was denied by corruption in the 2nd game of the semifinal in Milan and interwar and the decisions were ridiculous and as the referee walked off the pitch Tommy Smith kicked him up the backside and he just kept walking and Shanks said that man haunted him for the rest of his life and then of course I x. Gave them a try and sing which they didn't expect so for Shanks to be that I think was great must have been a bit painful in a way but I think he was delighted they finally lifted the trophy he he dreamed of so Liverpool champions of Europe and and Charlie here interviewed Hughes I suppose not long before he died actually describes what it was like going forward to collect the trophy we wanted to work about 6 or 8 steps and as he got up there we turned left there was a lot all thought alike balcony in front of. The member who it was that handed me there may be trophy over but it was just a case of yeah we want to pick it up where we are lots of a pull pass it on to the next one and walk on you know it was there it was an anticlimax in lots of ways because I remember I remember after the game so. I sat with my wife. And Sue to share and. We sat in the hotel afterwards and. I don't remember speaking to tuck she had not played in the final because of the persistent psi injury you need it chides ever so hard to get fit for a nd we all really knew that he was struggling to be fit for it and I remember sat with Tosh you know I'm thinkin I should really be now shouting and singing and dancing and getting drunk and fall in about an hour last night I thought nah study and you know touches me power off its audience and we sat down and we had a couple of beers but now especially you know it's just it was just with what it was one another trophy you know super But you know if we've got next pre-season to look forward to. Yeah I mean that was always the attitude of the stuff wasn't Erin I don't have to let my guard down for that one night but I mean Ronnie and Joe Royle I mean they're all part and parcel of the ethical and I because they were Yeah I mean it was it wasn't just the players because the players went out and did it but we could only do it because of lots of factors because of Bill Shankly you know Bill of Shanks had built this game of of when he went and it's one you know he was going to build a side that was capable of of winning the European Cup a nearly did in 65. And then he had the side that won. The f.a. Cup in 74 when I leave and he you forgot for him in 72 in one season. But we hadn't managed to do in the big one for him and then as we all know Shanks disappeared and Bob came over nothing changed because you cannot change Shanks team it was impossible and Bob wouldn't have been stupid enough to try and do that Bob just took it over in his own way you know kept things going kept things ticking over and then we were then we did it in 77 you know when it was a culmination of everybody not just the side that won it not just Bob Paisley not just one man but the people that come before them you know Jordan and made his contributions right and that made his contribution because he was only. Stuff you know even even though he was in charge of the juniors in the reserves we had people conclude from that side and there it was there it was a super night for Liverpool football team won on never ever be forgotten and then he went went home to the homecoming which again musta been level 0 some testing on it said to come back here fly in to speak him and go from there through to the Town Hall I mean it was. Again that was that was probably when when most of us were drunk you know we've come back on the plane without a few drinks without a few drinks on the coach going through the town. So it was there it was it was you know rather than after the game many funny of the matches you know. You don't really want to drink I never really drink very much after matches never met very much is one of the you know you you played a game you wanted to wind down and then we got a few drinks the next morning because it was the day after and we'd had a few drinks on the plane as we said you know everything then going on from there and that was that was something else for me coming through the town and seeing everybody so you know everybody else I mean it was it was actually believable in this I mean the amount of people that are now you just couldn't get through the mill and they would have me with them and use their Charlie or interview with him and poignance in a way he's no longer with us of course but his image is very much the iconic image of that night isn't it olding aloft the trophy absolutely that massive beaming grid of endurance I do miss him a though he was always so much more ready to smile and have a laugh than to moan and have a grouse and how appropriate to no longer with us sadly but the captain the captain of the Reds and John a great captain and must always be remembered as a great captain only features in a book I mentioned earlier Reykjavik to Rome which I've done it's the it charts all Liverpool's European Cup attempts up to the time they won it for the 1st time as we've been talking about tonight if anyone wants a copy the number to ring is 0 treble 737 warm 5 trouble 6 junk Keith Charlie Lambert thanks very much indeed for joining us tonight and to James mouth and all the players we've heard from Hope you've enjoyed all it'll trip down memory lane we'll leave you with the moment Hamlin lifted the European Cup in Rome in 1960 Good night am I was. Watching.
