Welcome along to the North American sports show on 5 Live My name's Joel and can't walk out and later on tonight you'll hear from James Wickham as usual now we are starting tonight on a little tour we're going for a trip around the US of A to preview That's right the new and F L season which kicks off in September only a few more weeks to go N.F.L. Fans now fans will already be aware of their teams being back in pre-season action or following the latest on which players are refusing to wear the new safer helmets and all of those other very N.F.L. Type stories it's one of the shortest seasons on longest off seasons in mainstream sports so we forgive any N.F.L. Franchises and over the next few weeks you will hear about every single team this is looking at the summer they have just had the off season how they drafted but also looking ahead to the season for them what are the chances of that team particularly lifting the Super Bowl when it comes round in February so you will hear from every single team before the season kicks off in September couple of headlines to bring you as well now last week this happened her straight away is the running back if he gets the carries here. So how was I How how how I was. Going to work. Through their friends for dinner. Tonight or counter night. Any shows the ability that made him an international rugby superstar former wasps and England winger Christine Waite scored a sensational 65 yard touchdown with his 1st carry on his buffalo Bell's debut Now you may remember Christine appeared on this very show when it was announced he'd made the switch from rugby to the N.F.L. On American football and he was so excited about making that step so to see him carrying the ball running 65 yards were there to score a touchdown in the preseason for the Bills was just so great the running back bay Union back in October 28th pain to push you an N.F.L. Career he joined the bells in April and he is trying his best to make it over there flying the British flag loads of British fans have been on social media supporting Christie and I have a haze Well his journey transferring over from rugby he told the B.B.C. I knew I was going even before the ball came because they overloaded one side said wait I knew as soon as he got the ball I was off to the races I was looking up at the screen to see if any of the linebackers or anyone was coming up behind me and they were they way it was awarded the game ball by Bell's head coach Sean McDermott huge congratulations to Christian Wade said the Bills quarterback Josh Allen just some of the reaction to that incredible news later on tonight as well. Just in case there are some people who don't like American football Well we're going to bring you a story that is highlighting the link between ice hockey and punk rock Don't ever say we don't give you variety on North American sports showing up all night but let's get going with our tour of the N.F.L. To start with and we are starting in the N.F.C. North So just to let you know the N.F.C. North consists of the Chicago Bears the Detroit Lions the Green Bay Packers and the Mina so-to Vikings let's start with the Packers and welcome back friend of the show Ryan A.K.A. PAC daddy he does the PAC in that podcast and if you are a fan of the Green Bay Packers then you need to give this guy follow packed out a welcome back to the north americans will show much for having me OK So what is the state of the tame heading into the Senate fell season. I would have to say it's cautious optimism there's a lot of changes that are going on. So it's a lot of question marks I guess you could say a lot of new players new coaches but I think we got a good roster and we're all pretty excited about it since I'm a knob on of the Green Bay Packers and I happened to find a game that was on T.V. That who was a star player has to watch I think I know the answer of the 1st play you might mention but him and beyond so if you're if you're brand spanking new then Aaron Rodgers is going to be the one to keep an eye on he's the quarterback and is you know one of the more prominent players in the N.F.L. Very very good quarterback outside of that divine Tay Adams the wide receiver is you just starting to get the recognition he deserves is a debate about whether or not he's a top 5 receiver and I think after this year is done that's going to be for sure David Bach T.R.E. Is arguably the best left tackle in the game and then one other name that I would probably throw out there on the defensive side would be Kenny Clark who is a defensive lineman and a very very young I think he's like 22 years old so he's he's a rising star he's going to have a great career for the Packers How's the summer been for the Packers any kind of interesting names that they drafted any off the field that is that they perhaps you know fans might not want to hear about or is the team in a good place well they've done a really good job of staying out of trouble so that's always nice very very minimal on the injury front nothing super serious there. But they've been extremely active and if you haven't been watching for quite a long time the Packers are a very boring football team in the off season typically they don't they don't see a good thing as they could you know it's no news is good news but there's been a new direction and they've got a new general manager and they went out and just completely overhauled we got a bunch of new players. Especially on the defensive side pass rushers Preston's Miss Dariya Smith safety Darnell Savage we drafted Adrian a most we got from the Bears so I mean just just everybody along the defense is different which is part of what I was talking about with you know a lot of question marks new head coach new office of coordinator. It's a lot has been going on in the offseason so it's been very very busy but again we're pretty excited about it and hopefully it's going to have some positive results do you think Pakistan's will see a difference in how that team plays with the lace changes you mention and no question the office especially one of the reasons that it. Was changed is that Mike McCarthy our old head coach was kind of running the same oftens that has been running for a very very long time back when the Packers won the Super Bowl you know almost 10 year yeah just about 10 years ago. And the N.F.L. Is evolved a lot since then and it just isn't working anymore so the new updated office for the Packers isn't going to look all that different to some of the other teams out there but compared to what the Packers have been doing for you know last year and beyond it's going to be a night and day difference and how that all meshes and how much it helps or hurts certain players is going to be a big question mark going forward obviously hoping that it's going to be a big boost to the oftens what Pakistan's ready for that kind of change because they've been a nearly team for quite a long time and you think of the last Sunday last few seasons then in the Packers has always been a team that you would put money on to at least be in the Super Bowl final But you know other funds ready for a bit of a change now I think so I'm one of the slower people to come around as far as you know we need to get rid of this person this coach this player I'm usually a little bit more well let's give him some time I was ready and I think by the time he got fired I don't think there was anybody left that wanted to keep you know it it everybody that's gone we were all pretty content. They need to go because it just was not working anymore so this is going to be a tough question bear in mind there is so many changes in and really until the season starts you're not going to know what that looks like but what do you believe are the chances this time round that the Packers could be in the Super Bowl and maybe even lift the thing. Well comfortably under 50 percent I can say that. The division that we're in is actually going to be very competitive the Chicago Bears are a very good team the Minnesota Vikings have a talented roster I think the Detroit Lions got a lot better you know and then you look at the N.F.C. In the N.F.C. In general the Saints are a great team you know that the Rams are a great team you look outside of that you've got the chiefs in the pay the there's a lot of good football teams and there's a lot of good teams in the division so you know what I think we should look at in terms of baby steps let's just hope that the team improves Let's hope that we can try to work toward one in the vision maybe get into the playoffs and we'll see what happens from there well we wish you all the best in luck obviously we're not allowed to pick favorites hail in the North American but the fact all your fans wear cheese on your head still something that the hair Nikkei is greatly enjoyed and I think we all can safely say we have a soft spot for the power sitting right next to my cheese head right now it's just a beautiful image dowdy thank you Addison much for coming on and shine to us and all the best for the season ahead Thanks again take care say from Green Bay to Minneapolis we're going to travel the 277 miles and find out about the Minnesota Vikings and Matthew cola Copas the Minnesota Vikings for school North Mathieu how of the Vikings looking heading into 2019 Well I think they went into this season hoping that they could improve a lot of things on their often it's Last year they were 19th in scoring which was just not what they expected when they signed Kurt cousins their quarterback to an $84000000.00 contract in the last off season so this year they put a lot of effort into bringing in new often since minds to help out their quarterback to improve the often civilize add a couple weapons in the draft they picked in the 2nd round a tight end that is supposed to be able to go down the field they drafted a center in the 1st round which is kind of unusual. Well but it was a position that they desperately needed to improve their often said wind so you know I think we've seen a lot of that in training camp come to fruition that last year in training camps there were some pretty poor performances and a lot of concern coming out of camp and into the regular season and it all kind of showed up when they started to play the real games and this year the training camp performances and preseason has looked a lot better in their 1st game against New Orleans so you know I think that there's a lot of hope that if the off and some proves then they can be a legitimate Super Bowl contender it's really interesting that you mentioned both changes in play is changes in coaching as well which one of those 2 do you think is more important has has been real issues with the coaching Yes So last year toward the end of the season the Vikings fired their offices court Nader because I think they were struggling with the amount that they wanted to throw the ball and the head coach Mike Zimmer he wants to run the ball a lot more because they have a really good running back in delegate cook but last year they struggled on the office of lines so they couldn't do it as much it is kind of like one problem built on the other but I think that what they've really set out their goal is to run the ball more with a new office of mine to Gary Kubiak here who is helping the off ends and then Kevin Stefanski is going to be the new play caller So I think that the 2 things kind of play off of each other but they have kind of similar goals to what the head coach Mike Zimmer wants and they believe that if they can run the ball well then they can hit on some big passing plays built off of those runs so you know I think if you were to pick one of the other you'd probably say the new often sit floss of the what would probably be the biggest helper but I think they're going to both contribute to a little more success this year and just how good COUSINS Well it's a great question and one that is debated in Minnesota almost every single day you know he puts up really good statistics and if he's your fantasy football quarterback. Back you've been very happy with him since he became a starting quarterback in Washington and then now in Minnesota but in terms of big situations big games games that you don't expect to win but you hope your quarterback shows up and he just hasn't had a whole lot of those great performances throughout his career and last year in the final week of the season he needed to win a game to get the Vikings into the playoffs and he basically told the no shows so you know there's a kind of an ongoing philosophical debate like do you believe that he's really a good quarterback it just needs more help or that he has some fundamental flaw that he can't get over the top in those big situations and you know I think until he proves that he can until he gets into the playoffs that he wins playoff games and even he has admitted this and until he does that I think people will still believe that he's basically middle of the League quarterback that you can't really win with a No he's got a very good weapon a very good outlets and Adam feeling as well but let's move in a look a bit more the defense How's that looking this season Well the defense is getting a little bit long in the tooth I would say and that is where the biggest concern is because since Mike Zimmer arrived here in 2014 they've consistently been one of the best in the league and they made a lot of efforts to bring back or retain their key defensive players like Anthony Barr and Everson Griffen they made sure they kept those guys but you know some of their key guys are getting to 30 years old which in the N.F.L. Is old it's always sort of funny to be the same age as players and be like your old but I'm young in my career but but when you have a key defensive end in Everson Griffen at 30 Lynn ball Joseph A key nose tackle he's at 31 years old Xavier Rhodes is their shutdown corner he's 29 Harrison Smith is their safety he's 29 these players have been at the forefront of leading the best defenses in the N.F.L. . Well over the last few years and if they start to hit some roadblocks if they get some injuries or if they lose a step here or there then it's going to be a pretty big challenge because this team does not have great depth behind those star players but I would say assuming that they continue to play well the expectation is that they'll be one of the best defenses in the N.F.L. Again and a big season for my exam of the series will Oh absolutely yeah I mean this team was one game away from the Super Bowl 2 years ago and it was a big disappointment last year how things turned out and as I'm sure you know that if there's a disappointing season then it puts your head coach in the hot seat because that's just how the only words right so you know I think that Zimmer has been one of the best coaches in the N.F.L. Since he got his job in 2014 and it would probably be a mistake to judge him on one season but that's sort of the harsh reality is if they don't get back to the playoffs it's going to put his job in jeopardy finally and briefly you know can you get out of that and if the North End could even be super bowl room for the Vikings. I think it is possible but you mention the division it's very very difficult Chicago was great last year we expect Green Bay and Detroit to both be tougher I wouldn't be surprised this all 4 teams were all really good and really competitive but you know if you're playing the odds there's definitely a chance that a team with as much talent as the Vikings have and really good coaching improving coaching that they could get to the Super Bowl it just any time you go into a season with 7 or 8 teams in the N.F.C. That you could all be saying that same thing for you know you would you wouldn't gamble on it necessarily but they definitely have the talent it will come down to things like how do they make their field goals they didn't last year do they get some stumble locked or they you know I don't know have another team get a key injury or something like that I think it's going to it's going to take some good breaks for attacks really happen from Minneapolis now to Michigan and the Detroit Lions and Sonja Greenfeld covers the Detroit Lions for our Perth football Sagna lovely to have you along but how's it looking for the Lions this year so the outlook for the Lions this year you know everybody's still still pretty excited even their 1st preseason game didn't go as one would say swimmingly. Everybody is excited about the defense the changes upgrades that have been made on defense that trade flowers coming in on defensive and Michael Philip Michael Shiloh coming from Green Bay as also the interior defensive line and so a lot of upgrades and changes have been made in constantly ostensively you know we're looking at T.J. Hackett stand our 1st round draft pick from out of Iowa who is a tight end who so far has done really really well in training camp so despite you know a slow start to the preseason folks are still feel anything. Pretty. Energized and excited about the things I'm coming up yeah because you've had quite a big change recently have a new with much prefer coming in he comes in with a big reputation albeit a bit unproven as a head coach So how do you think he's doing. So far I think so good they're really trying to you know develop. A versatility style to their off and in their defense actually and really trying to trying to open things up and you know while people are still kind of. You know excited and still they still want to see changes and see stuff and we all know that we still have to be patient and it's going to take a little bit of time to get fully implemented his style his players things like that but we slow we're still the starting to see changes and I think once it all comes together if we're patient he can be doing pretty well he's got somebody to help him of course and in the wide receiver department so many knows Danny Amendola . You have to deal with Matthew Stafford as well as the quarterback tell us a bit about Matthew stuff. Matthew Stafford is. A tough guy he is a battle or he goes out and you know he will put his body on the line for this team he is a true gamer but he's also a true gunslinger and I think he's gotten used to have he was used to having Calvin Johnson out there and you know he always those those high balls but now that he's got somebody in the NE even Dilla he's got Marvin Jones he's got T.J. HAAKANSON and he's got targets that he can throw to and down with the emergence of Carey and Johnson are running back. In him not having to rely on passing the ball as much I think that could really help and really help Matthew really take this team for the next level teams but about the fence that how's that the fence looking ahead of this new season. Like we said upgrades have been happening and so you've got Michael. Phillips Michael Daniels from the Packers you flowers coming in on the sense of that and. And you got a quandary day eggs are cornerback serious like you got snacks how can I forget snacks Damon Harrison the nose tackle came over from. The Giants midway through the season last season and he has been nothing but an excellent run stuffer and run stopper so I think our game times is coming along rather nicely it's always been a little bit ahead I think of the author. But I think this year they're going to start to catch up but I am loving what they're doing on defense and you got variously back there. As safe as quarterback so I think that I mean fans are looking pretty decent as well so it's obviously been a fairly busy time for the back office I mean what do you make of the lions off the field as they approach the new season. Almost this feeling I think Quinn has done a really good job making smart smart. Yes and they like that and I think that coming from his New England background I think that's where we're seeing his New England pedigree come through where he's really studying and making moves that are going to help move the team forward and you know like we've talked about in the past is that you know you got to build your chain from the inside out and I think lowly but surely that is what the jewelry so I'm really liking the moves that Patricia or that Quinn has made this offseason and what about the fans you know it's in a relationship is that between the thoughts the sounds in the team at the moment in Detroit. The So right now the fans are a little bit upset after the last there are these preseason game but the one thing is about this fan base is that we are. We're very proud of our team and we stand behind our team there are do or die that you know this team can do no wrong and but they're I think most of what our fan base is we're honest and we're supportive and where very we're very involved and we want to see this team do well we do and I think everybody in that everybody but a lot of us are by and believe you know if we just give it some time this will actually turn out to be pretty good and we can see some playoff wins in hopefully the very near future while I was going to come to the very finally is a Super Bowl run on the cards. This year I don't think but if things keep going the next thing you go I'm pretty well this next couple years it could happen I think a Super Bowl run could happen in the next couple years if you know the team he's building and progressing and you know doesn't take any steps backwards I think a Super Bowl run can be made in about 2 to 3 years book. Ahead of the season starting in just a few weeks' time we've already heard about the Green Bay Packers the Minnesota Vikings on the Detroit Lions So now it's time to complete the N.F.C. North with us tonight on North American sports show is Jordan to Johnny from C.B.S. Sports He writes across the entire N.F.L. However we have asked him to represent the Chicago Baz for us tonight now Jordan County just tell us what state the Baz are in heading into this season Chicago Bears are in a pretty good state heading into the 2900 season they have a solid core of young stars that they're expecting to make a big leap forward in this incoming season there were a team that made the playoffs last year and they're expecting a lot more here and 21000. Now as. A casual fan who are the kind of plays you should be looking out for on the Bears this year who are the stars. Well start with a quarterback position we've got a guy by the name of Mitch too busy now he's still young but he's took a step forward and 2018 he's someone that the Bears are expecting to be their franchise quarterback here in the future hopefully taking them to the Super Bowl on the upcoming years on another couple stars will probably be running back to recall in a very very small player but with that being said he's very versatile he's just as dangerous with the ball in the stands as he is as a receiver on the back the also a very versatile weapon for them there in the wide receivers out wide Allen Robinson he came over from the Jacksonville Jaguars he now has a year under under his belt the Chicago Bears this is a guy using other versatile weapon E.S.P. Should serve as the primary weapon or primary target I should say for quarterback Mitch should this and finally another guy that you should keep an eye on is tight and trade Burton he's a guy he's a very good blocker with when it comes down to running the ball but also a great receiver who is a nice safety blanket option for Mitch to bisque that being said the real star power for the Bears comes on the defensive side of the ball they have arguably one of the best players in the an N.F.L. By the name of Callil Matt he plays linebacker very very fast running silent ESOL and very fast at getting to the quarterback in the backfield this dude is an absolute beast so how was the summer for that Baz did they draft well and I think particularly interesting coming from the draft or with any off the failed incidents that might make bad as fans worry heading into the season when you're going up the word specifically worry it's definitely when it comes down to the kicker position of course the Bears missed a field goal last year that what had taken them to the next round the playoffs a some people what a field goal that should have been made a lot of other kickers in the N.F.L. Would have made so if the Bears had done this offseason has just had this incredible kicker try out they've signed guys cut guys at competitions during practice they're trying to find the right guy who can get them to the. The playoffs if the situation comes down to it again because they suffered quite a heartbreaking loss in the playoffs last year and they don't want to do that again the kicker is an important position in football Don't get me wrong but most N.F.L. Teams are kind of said with their kicker the Bears have posted one of the most important most were widely reported kicker battles in the past you know 5 years or so in the N.F.L. So the kicker position is that we want to keep an eye on and you know that they still haven't found the right guy they're still trying to work for that they might make a trade for another kicker someone they see in the preseason and that they find interesting so keep your keep an eye on the kicker position moving forward I used to say that the only position I would be willing to play in the N.F.L. Would be the Kika because I'm a wimp and I wouldn't want to get hit the way the guys get hit fell however the Chicago bad last year changed my mind all bets and. Getting about soaring the monumental amount of Prussia that gets heaped onto a kick in the he's caught us in our who would do that oh man absolutely the mental crusher is absolutely incredible it's something that I don't know if I didn't. Know absolutely not but may put me in a scrum I know you don't even call it out that is a very English thing to say but anyway I'm right what are the chances for the Baz heading to the Super Bowl will we see them in a Super Bowl final this year would we even see them lifting the Super Bowl one of the chances. I think there's a decent chance they could make it to the Super Bowl that being said if quarterback Michu basically can really turn into an N.F.L. Star this upcoming season they have the defense to do it they have good enough weapons. But that being said they could be nice Super Bowl favorite I think I still think New England Patriots might be one of the best teams in the N.F.L. Even though quarterback Tom Brady is 100 years old they're still going to be a team that I'm probably going to pick for the Super Bowl so in terms of representing the N.F.C. The embassy in the Super Bowl I think the Bears might have a chance this year so we're going to continue our tour of the N.F.L. In the next couple of weeks and we will touch on every single team all 32 teams that's for down we've got 28 more to go and we will bring you them over the next few weeks now I want to turn our attention to hockey James is going to be talking to you about the link between punk rock and ice hockey I want to tell you a little bit about some of the goings on in the N.H.L. As that is also kind of priming up now ready for the season starting in October training camps are going to be starting in the next few weeks and there's a very interesting story brewing in the N.H.L. Right now there is a very young talented group of players who seem to be holding out and they're all holding out for contracts now that doesn't sound particularly unusual and it happens a lot in pro sports in North America However what's interesting about this group is all of these players are on restricted free agent Dale's therefore they're not just simply able to go and sign with whoever they want they've signed that kind of a rookie deals and they're young Dale's And now this is their 1st contract where they can negotiate however that hands are tight to the rules the N.H.L. Puts out so they can't just simply go and sign with somebody else they do have to sign with that seemed the only as their rights however there's a real shift in the end. Right now and that is younger stars are getting paid earlier it used to be you had to wait your moment to become an unrestricted free agent at the age of 26 or 27 and that was the time that you could cash in however now these players are saying well hang on a minute we're performing at a level as good as some of the U.F.A. Players who are much later on in the career and it's there are there are stats to suggest that actually players in their early twenty's that is actually the prime of a player's career however there is a hard salary cap system in the N.H.L. And teams much as they like to sign everybody can't and they're not allowed to there is that hard salary cap so teams are coming up against a really interesting problem because they've already got existing contracts on their teams that restrict them in being able to move and they may have signed big deals with players much older and much further along in their career and now they're young superstars are asking for the same money there is a whole group of very talented players all holding out and it's going to be very interesting to see if one of them signs whether that is the domino effect and whether they're waiting for a market leader or whether they are all going to hold out and this could potentially hold out into the start of the season and we could be looking at a league next year that is missing some of its brightest young stars we're going to keep an eye on this as the offseason continues in as the season approaches but it's going to want to keep an eye on because one has even been talk about the league having to step in to potentially try and change some of the rules about players signing this 2nd contract more and that as we get it but now to punk rock Sonya ship Henri is the assistant managing editor of The athletic and to run so she's written a great article all about the link. Tween ice hockey and punk rock it all starts at a university radio station C.H.R.Y. Which is based apps are on today's York University James spiked and she took up the story and a warning this does get a little bit loud it was very small the radio station was kind of run down it was run by volunteers most of us were were volunteers working there and it was a place that you went to to kind of get experience if you were interested in the media or if you were interested in music it was a small radio station I think it was only 50 watts at the time I worked there so the coverage was very small in terms of how many you know households it could reach because the transmitter was actually on top of the the building that we worked in so it didn't it didn't go very far but I actually happened to live in a place where I could get the radio station and that's how I found out about it before I actually started volunteering there and so I was interested in sports and I thought that would be a really great place to go and you know maybe get some experience I was also really interested in music and there were just so many different people working there at the time that you know it really expanded my musical horizons they they pretty much had a show for every conceivable music I'm smiling because you know as we were talking about just before we started recording this interview I had a similar experience at the University of York and in England where I are on the radio station there for a few years and I remember walking in you know hearing all these different types of bands and different types of music that I haven't really discovered before but your description of the. Ice itself just rang a bell with me you know the Brokenshire as the slightly grumpy areas you know the desk and everything on it kind of all kind of all came back to me and what I thought was interesting was when you were talking about and you saying that with post on the wall that really kind of sum up your time is summed up the link that we're talking about tonight yeah and now as for the band slapshot I mean the core of the radio station was basically if it's a band Thank you a poster or a picture or whatever you put tape on it and just put it on whatever empty space was available on the wall so that means like every almost every inch of the radio station was covered in these posters and one of them one of them that happened to be. Near the sports department was it was for. Slapshot. Obviously being off a hockey term but also a very popular movie from the seventy's and so that kind of was the bridge between I guess my love of course but also my love of punk and hard part. Well let's talk a little bit. About that link if we count I mean you know you mentioned in the article about the Seventies and Eighties being the start of when home and kind of got the association with each of them do you know where it kind of comes from is it from you know those I was in Britain who all at best all of. You know it for its. Violence I would describe it as I do is that the kind of the hog nature of the guy is that when the link comes in yes. So I think so well at least at that time at least in the seventy's and eighty's hockey's has changed quite a bit you know there aren't as many you know bench clearing brawls that you know you might have seen in the seventy's or eighty's happening now but I think that was it was definitely a part of it was the energy and the aggression and also the violence you know you would go to a hardcore show and it would be it would be really aggressive like in the pit on the stage you know people would be would be jumping off off of amps and risers and what have you and so I think that kind of correlated to what was definitely happening happening in hockey at the time so what is it that makes punk musicians absolutely love the game I mean you know we talk about the violence briefly but there's something more than the artist in the room yeah I think it's the energy really you know it's kind of aggressive but but also musically aggressive. And so I think there's there's definitely that link there and there's also the energy hockey is a really fast hard hitting sport and that's really what what punk rock and Hardcore is is to yeah hardcore I mean you say in this and one of the people that you quote in it says that hardcore is violent angry music and that kind of seems to be you know why it has such a definitive connection with with hockey but do any of the musicians that you spoke to as a result of this article do they play hockey or do they just like being involved and watch the games or is it just the one to Couture that I love you know I think it's a little bit of both there are definitely guys in the article who play hockey Chris Parker who is the bassist from N.C. Flag he actually takes his his hockey equipment on the road with with him when they . Playing in Europe or wherever they play you know kids will come up to him after shows offering ice time and he'll go and skate with them he plays quite regularly I'm Russ Rankin who's a front man for a good riddance and only crime he still plays hockey in like an over 35 like picked up rec league So yeah these these guys play Chris Hannah from Propagandhi plays that regularly too so it's it's I think for the Canadians like Chris Hanna it's it's very much in grained in in who we are kind of culturally hockey is but for the the Americans I think you know they they enjoy it just as much but it's definitely a different dynamic. It reminds me slightly also of some Paoli which is that the German football to you kind of all the supporters dress up with pirates and have a definite aim each to go without saying this kind of scene as they would be outlaw your team if you got the team of of German football do you get the feeling that interop there was this distinct Amy being brought up as a result of you know the mixture of the punk rock saying an ice hockey and all of these things coming together did to wrong to develop its own reputation for this kind of for a little bit I know back in the in the eighty's there was kind of a back and forth between trauma and Montreal because you know the Leafs in the Habs are are kind of the Montreal Canadiens I should say are our kind of natural rivals and so you saw some of that in the in the eighty's during the punk scenes you know Montreal bands would come trying to wearing hats jerseys Tronto bands would play in Montreal wearing Leafs jersey. But that's kind of died down I think for the most part it was kind of difficult to be our hockey thing and end a punk fan and be vocal about it and that's kind of something that some of the guys in the story touched on as well because you know hockey is like a mainstream establishment sport you know and punk rock punk rock is definitely not that so there was kind of there's kind of this difficulty in reconciling the 2 Was there a particular band the fort against the you from from what you've kind of you know the people that you've spoken to who was there a particular band up to took a particular stance for example against corporate culture. Oh I think they they all do but not necessarily in hockey most of the the people I spoke to for this story most of them talk about kind of leading 2 separate lives like there being a hockey fan is completely separate from what they do in their in their band because it is it's very difficult for many of them to to reconcile Now we've been talking historically have been way about about the link between punk rock and ice hockey but this is something that has lasted for a long time and even today you've still got violent between Maple Leaf fans for example and punk bands Modern point Benz. Yeah you know if you look at a a band like pup their lead singer 7 Babcock he is a huge hockey fan he grew up a fan of the trying to make believes and you know it's funny talking to him before he got into music he actually wanted to work in the hockey business and is hoping after his music career is is done to maybe get back into exploring working in hockey operations but for their video for morbid stuff he hid a little message in there for Leafs fans it's a futuristic video looking at Tron 0 in 2059 and so there's a little easter egg hidden there with a billboard that says maybe this will be the year 2059 and there's that make beliefs on it asking that question so he doesn't think it's going to take that long for the Leafs to win the cup but with the Leafs you never know. When these are rolling thieving between the father that the punk rock scene has gone so well I'm the least of them so I probably. Got a failing. A.V. Maybe but I mean Chris Chris Hannah who's also in the story with Propagandhi he is a huge huge Leafs fan and he will he has Game Center which is which allows him to watch hockey from anywhere and so when he'll be you know on the road in Europe or you know Australia he'll be like getting up at ridiculous hours local time so that he can watch the leaves play well I love talking about this because my mike I present to Joe Long is a massive Leafs fan on him discussed it's not about you know we're talking about the Leafs on. He's not here although he also likes Maroon 5 as a bouncer a comet everything on the other thing I just wanted to mention to you since I was and you wrote about this that you know many of these bonds were straightedge you know they'd they didn't get involved in drugs or alcohol or anything like that as well and you think somehow this you know hockey fans to me you have this kind of hard drinking kind of Cuccia and I might have called the wrong but I was there it was a real clash between the 2 you know the punk scene the hardcore scene and the the hockey scene as well to some extent some of these bands are are straight edge but I think if you're looking at kind of like Job Corps or what was kind of known as as jock or particularly in the eighty's it was mostly football punk bands you know guys like 10 yard fight who were from from Boston and they were football players and user today who are a New York hardcore band they were were definitely kind of pushing me more than I would say some of the hockey straight edge fans so slapshot a straight edge so did you get to find out if any of these musicians have gone into hockey as a full time is it that level of kind of love for them though they've actually gone into the game or they ended up doing other jobs no actually rest Rankin who is is with only crime and good riddance he works for the Tri-City Americans as a scout based in California so that's a junior hockey team they play in the C.H.L. Which is kind of the the feeder system for the N.H.L. So he spends a lot of his time scouting and actually working in hockey and then Ryan Kennedy who used to be in a couple of hardcore bands here in Toronto and he used to promote shows he eventually left and became a full time writer for. The Hockey News covering the N.H.L. And prospects so so yeah there are definitely people who have made that transition and finally is there a song do you think that kind of really links the 2 coaches that you know the warm song that you can pick out and say this is the wall not really sums up maybe your love in particular of by Feist hockey and on punk Oh there are so many D.O.A. They are Canadian icons and they are probably the most well known I guess Canadian punk and hardcore band around just because they they've been around for so long and they they are really kind of the godfathers of the the hardcore scene especially here in Canada they have so many songs about hockey that it's hard to pick just one but one of my personal favorite ones is probably propagandised your Coaches Corner which is about a lot more than hockey but the kind of lead into the story of the song it deals with Coaches Corner which is a very popular intermission segment on a Hockey Night in Canada which is probably one of the most watched shows here and in Canada it's obviously our hockey telecast so that song for me is probably my favorite. Was. Just. Almost George. Contractor One final question what what would you think of a police found he was like summer in fall if. I'm not going to answer that I can't break his heart.
