It was. Shot 1st of all the American astronaut John Young sorry John John Young who walked on the moon and flew the 1st space shuttle mission his dad he was 87 years old John Young had the longest career of any astronaut working with Desa for 42 years until his retirement in 2004 he visited space 6 times including on the Apollo and Gemini missions earlier NASA posted a tribute video of him online knowledge science a great 1st flight and. Really lucky to have Bob Crippen let me finish and we are not in the flesh my. Mom Alice flights I am is a lot of learn a lot from each man and. I think what we're doing is really important to see just really important Extremely for the future of this country and to the future of the great gang that we all belong to the human race. Dangers NASA said with the death of John Young the world lost a pioneer not to David Livingston is the host of the space show dot com does Livingston watch on the moon and let's remember these guys were astronauts in the early days of space travel it wasn't as common as perhaps it is now but walking on the moon there are many men who have done that he was also the 1st shuttle commander and was involved to space exploration for more than 4 decades does anyone else come anywhere near to close to his achievements. Believing I don't think so in addition to what you've said he did fly on Apollo which was on the Saturn 5 which was not really a tested rocket they put the air. Not sonot. Pretty much from the get go and off they went and back when the moon program was ending many people in NASA said they were really glad because they didn't know that the Saturn 5 was going to keep working so well. We wouldn't do that today you know today NASA would make sure the rocket was tested this way that way every way before a human even got close to it these guys were real pioneers and when he went up on Gemini You know that was a commercial version of an i.c.b.m. And he perfected rendezvous when he was up on one of his on his 2nd Gemini mission and then he got he flew the space shuttle they couldn't test the space shuttle so they had to test it by flying it so he was the commander of the 1st space shuttle mission went up and then of course he he flew it again later in his career so he was a test pilots test pilot he flew a couple of spacecraft that nobody had ever flown before and really and truly had not been tested before he was he was quite a person a captain in the Navy and maybe aviator test flight school and I don't know that anybody can come close to him because today you know when they fly. The risk factor and the safety is so much different than it was in these days with John Glenn and when he went to the moon and then when he flew on the on the Space Shuttle these guys were beyond the word brave let me tell you. Anything join Young's background that attests to. That beyond brave comes from him and made him the person he was to become. Well he he would serve his country he as you heard in that video he was really big on serving the country he was a naval 88 aviator 1st class and you know flying on aircraft carrier back in the day when he was doing it that was risky as can be to him it still is risky but nothing like what it was back when he was flying and then test pilot school to you know back and in the days of Apollo in the sixty's in the seventy's and in Gemini test pilots got killed I mean you don't hear about test pilots getting killed very often anymore it was a risky business so he was a risk taker and he loved this country and he he just had that kind of view from the way he was brought up and you know he was born in California he lived in Florida and went to Georgia Tech and everybody said a Georgia Tech the people that knew him that he was an engineer's engineer that he knew how to ask the right question and get right to. The answer he didn't waste a lot of time running around in circles and there are a lot of stories of his humor I mean are you do you know the corned beef sandwich you know or newness about it or do you how do you know the story about him smuggling a cool. Story. Yeah I do know the story while the Sharod who I was fortunate up to interview on the special several times was probably the biggest printer of all the early astronauts and he bought a corn beef sandwich to get to smuggle on to the Gemini mission with John Young and Gus Grissom and what they were going to do is when Gus Grissom started to complain about the horrible mass of food which they didn't lie he was going to whip out from behind this corned beef sandwich bought from the number one Deli in the area. Where they launched from Cocoa Beach in that area and give it to Gus as a surprise and so true to Sean gust who was complaining about the food and out comes this corned beef sandwich and NASA didn't know anything about it and they got mad and they were very upset and members of Congress were upset and others were upset they said this could have jeopardized the mission you can't do these things so they went after John Young but there were no consequences for it but that's a famous story. With his humor and playing tricks and 7 it was a real surprise to Gus Grissom The Another thing that was a real funny incident astronaut's when they got on the surface of the moon they all took a picture saluting the American flag I mean that was like you know the must thing you have to do so when it came time for John to salute the flag and to have this famous astronaut picture he jumped up in the air and with the moon 6 gravity they took the picture and he's 18 to 20 inches above the surface of the earth really high higher than the other astronaut and he's saluting the flag kind of in mid-air in this jump and that was a very special jump for an astronaut saluting the American flag and there are other stories of things that he did that were probably more on the on the colorful risque side. But he had a great sense of humor and I met him I don't know he had retired from NASA in 2004 I met him at a conference where he was speaking and he was as articulate as could be this is probably around 2010 or 2009 in Las Vegas very friendly guy and very articulate and very devoted to space and to developing space and getting humans into space and he may have retired from NASA but he never did retire from his passion and his love for the country and for going into space and getting more people into space how we remembered what Americans are doing. Probably as a. 9th moon walking astronaut there are 5 of them left by the way that I think killed That's Ruby remembered for walking on. You know the space shuttle is is not as big a deal probably over here as walking on the and Gemini while it pioneered everything and was really crucial doesn't unfortunately have that stature either so I think he'll be remembered as a naval captain a real hero in the military and the same in NASA and for the night astronaut to walk on the docks Livingston Thank you Dr David Livingston the host of the space show dog so gone quiet in Sydney which I suppose means it's lunchtime over there Jonathan O'Brien. Is it did he says tea time I said lunch brings to you because it is clumsy it's stated to be honest I'd have loved again because you know I was devoted to you doesn't not leaving my seat Ebony got the take it was over lunch man fortunes tell you it was a sci fi day when is. Can Lobster where you missed out what media kit was it was a special day normally they only have one table of thing tonight they have to the head of a 2nd batch of story the feeling is down the manager sausage roll while listening to James Brown. To Mitchell Starc and most others to cook clean bowled by Nathan Lyon for 10 beautiful turning delivery James mentor 6 Joe Root has 8 how Evan a do England survive here because clearly Australia want to get this done as quickly as they possibly can and the good news for India isn't that the new bows only had shine for about 10 or 12 over so far and then cut a lot of finally. Little bit that Biggest there I think is if another which comes the left hand as we saw one 3rd line get some serious physical pop outside the leg stump to the left handers that could be dangerous if we get different events combat throughout this partnership until the next new building they can set something decent The biggest challenge of course is night the line we're seeing some serious face of pop I think it could be really difficult What about the actual surface you know is he getting benefit from landing the ball in in criteria he is unless that Suarez's sort of on the left hand is off stump all for the right hander they said as nice as you warn out footmarks and we saw one or 2 actually earlier in the day kind of stay low wanted to visit but I think we saw the biggest spinning for the whole game from my mind just a few moments ago so that's an indication it's going to be very very tricky I think England that have to be small about playing making sure they get the bats out front otherwise it could be dangerous Ok so if you're if you're not a cricket afficionado the situation here is that Australia need 8 more in the long wicket to win the Test match when From here they're 278 behind that there isn't enough time all and any way they can turn the situation around they need to survive victory for England will be not losing these 8 wickets but watch rest left of today and then the whole of tomorrow so that's the match in a 25 to 2 in their 2nd extension Pretty didn't even smoke. Turn out for you know if you want to know the story it's a long way around actually had it when it is hot you know seafood is a bit dangerous in this heat I was more thinking about this is how is a good foreigner Trimix close. To tail within the hand yes sorry not quite. The South Central innings 3 feel good today is the right thing to do thank you. I'm Thanks to Dr rob us President. Is accused him of being unstable and incompetent dismissing him as a fraud the president told a news conference at Camp David which is of course the u.s. President's retreat the book of fire and theory by Michael Wolff was a work of fiction saying that he had been to the best colleges and been a tremendous success on television this guy that does not know me doesn't know me at all by the way did not interview me for 3 he said he interviewed me for 3 hours in the White House it didn't exist Ok it's his imagination and want to I was heartened by because I talk about fake news in the fake news media was I really was the fact that so many of the people that I talk about in terms of fake news actually came to the defense of this great administration and even myself because they know the author and they know he's a front for Mr Trump's lawyers had tried to block the publication of Michael's will crews who came in instant Center on Friday when its release was brought forward earlier in Satsuma in a flurry of tweets was a drum called himself as not smart but Jane is in a very stable Gina said that he said the Democrats running questioning his mental stability because the Russia investigation turned out to be what he described as a total I've been speaking to the political columnist and former Republican member of the u.s. House of Representatives John. He says When I asked him if the current theory surrounding the book adds up to a crisis for the Trump presidency want to ask back from a blog is rapidly becoming a crisis and never before have I ever seen a White House press briefing like we had 2 days ago where a reporter asked the White House press secretary whether the president was going to have a mental acuity Chast actually the 1st and they've all asked for all and he started asking about whether he's mentally shed of a job or not that has now crept in to the regular mainstream media and I'm. Erica there's a big pushback from the White House from Trump himself today but the fact that the topic of the president's mental status is front and center is approaching a bit of a crisis I think why is that is is because if you think about it the American people would have seen the last year where the this president is mentally fit for the job or not I don't know why whatever revelations of come out in the book of added fire to that. Well I say they would have seen us and they probably have but it's as sort of a door to ask the question and experts have been put on these cables mental health professionals shrinks are on and by the way it's just that of the norm you know it's never a topic at America that we have or have talked about about any president other than briefly next the summer of 74 when things are bad for his son. Whether this guy's something off is rock or to hold on to power that's about it but there was not much talk about Reagan until he left office. That Reagan shot fired and trashed it when he 1st battle like that and put it away this has come out of nowhere really immediate this week and it's a ranging issue but boy on the other hand is the president's 0.0 He describes his book as a work of fiction in the. Media inside his pointed out Michael. History of if not just recreating scenes in his books but of creating the mold so as well so why should we believe anything that is in this book I've only done I'm about a 3rd of all right through reading the book and I believe it option because it fits with other things that we've heard if you're really plugged them from congressmen and senators who felt what shrub during his 1st year to leave family the meeting and shake their heads and look at each other go got discouraged crazy Republican congressmen and senators won't speak out. About the mental instability that they have witnessed withdraw their They'll put off the record what average attribution but on Him themselves they don't want to incur his wrath or the wrath of the voters and especially Fox News which is state t.v. Propaganda for Trump it's sort of what is keeping his base together is 247 Pro Trump stuff on Fox t.v. So that's what the. Air is all about from the Republican boys doing to the policy then this kind of. The president for well 1st I think we have a Obviously midterm elections in 10 months from now and the fear in the party is a gigantic anti Trump wave sweeping the country and November that we could sort of see signs of the beginning and 2017 and various elections that took place ending in Alabama obviously and the energy is all on the left it's anti Trump pro-Democrat is just anti Trump and I think Republican congressman senators are really getting worried that they might get wiped out and might lose control of one or both houses of Congress. The way that they carry out the electioneering that they stand aloof from the president to distinguish themselves from him or not they haven't so far and that's the same that there is a real conundrum if they separate themselves from Trump he and the base and Fox separate themselves from you for doing it and you're screwed. That's why they passed that tax cut bill their only hope they believe is the tax cut bill will generate enough economic growth this year by Novak. For people will say I'm happy for a Republican state a great job all vote for my Republican cover some of their Cabinet the Democrats are counting that no matter what happens the the passion is anti Trump among women minorities and young voters and the polling shows that those 3 groups loathe Trump and have been waiting a bit by then they'll be waiting 2 years to get their shot at getting rid of step by step by voting against the Republicans in November as a former congressman John Libby to live it's time to turn the sides now towards West and Central Africa for the latest news from that region from Up All Night Alex Duval Smith. You safe from. The biggest. Stars from far. East to hit me and. Listen on digital radio. With. The temperatures rising in the. Summer and a high profile union leaders also freezing the eat after being arrested in Europe we began by discussing Thursday's national strike in Argentina there were thousands of public sector workers who've come out and yeah they joined his protest on Thursday because the current government. Has laid off. 100 people in just one month and the numbers except expected to double in March song. A lot of these government workers are protesting these layoffs saying that they're unjustified that they haven't been communicated to the workers themselves. And that the government isn't interested in taking care of workers' interests and that it's a government that's more aligned with big business interests so thousands of workers as he said join this national strike on Thursday there was also a big protest in one aside as the days in the city center where the workers marched to the ministry of modernization which is the institution implemented the layoffs and overall the feeling in the March was a feeling of anger against the government seriously on who is one of the you know Representatives was there and this is what she had to say. We are taking part of this national strike because thousands of government workers have been fired absolutely unjustified. Many of these employees working under preparedness conditions either as informal workers or workers whose contracts were not renewed in December these were workers that had been working for the government for 51015 or 20 years and who were fired without any previous warning or meeting they would show up to work and they wouldn't be let in this document is ation of the working class is a characteristic of this government and this is taking place not only at the national level but also at the provincial and municipal level thousands of workers welcome the new year without a job and tell me just. In Argentina they're very strong their political power is incredible something that I think is very characteristic of Argentina they can. We've talked before about some general strikes taking place on when they say they are. The thing shuts down from subways to long distance buses flights they have massive powers so. Just recently a couple months ago there was a general strike the whole city had to shut down the whole country almost had to shut down and the government oftentimes has to abide by the by the demands of the unions just because the city or the country can't operate and something that. Is representative of all so the power of the unions are the very prominent union leaders that are leading these unions so the next story I was going to talk to you about was about this arrest of a union leader these past weekend in Europe why he's name was to say low bond sale and he was the head of one of the most important education sector unions in the country he was being investigated for money laundering and sort of wondering almost to me if 3000000 pounds that's about 80000000 pesos while he was the head of these union. So he was investigated for money laundering the judge had issued an international arrest warrant for sale and use wife who was also involved in this money laundering network and he was that I was arrested in one day left there which is a very posh v.a.p. Beach resort in your a way where many wealthy Arjan signs of celebrities go to the cation during the summer and he was found there with half a 1000000 u.s. Dollars in cash 14 luxury cars including a Ferrari says Benz and a Porsche and several assault weapons so the mention of the power of unions under leaders I think is very well represented by this case of of these union leader so that was arrested wasn't just on holiday in your garden. On the run as we would describe it from the oh yes. So thirty's you don't know where he was a new ice also often used by many rich Arden's and businesspeople as a place to store their money the national regulations are much more flexible than your Argentina so a lot of heart and I will have accounts there Mr Sale had trouble to your why over taking times over the past half year and his wife had travelled to your way over 26 times in the past 2 years so the judge. Did judges guess is that he was in there just for a vacation know that he actually was running his money laundering business through euro and that's why they were there. Over the past week from what you describe the general struggle. In Argentina but actually quite frequent What did the what does the public think about that to have everything shut down in the way it was last week. Of course it's extremely inconvenient for everyone. A lot of these strikes involved like I said like the airports shut down a long distance buses shut down I love it and a lot of times they're strategically planned so they take days either just the beginning of a long weekend or in the middle of the working day so it's very inconvenient for a lot of people the one that's a place in December you know and that's a place in December I wasn't able to go into the citizens or because the subways went running some people that have planned trips had to cancel them because all of a sudden they can travel because their buses were canceled so it's very very inconvenient for everyone but at the same time some people do agree that it's a very effective strategy for unions to get their their demands. Heard by the government yes it's something I think that I've only seen United do you know where so often a whole city has to shut down because of some union demands. And sometimes the the the special thing or the characteristic thing about this government is that it is being less flexible with unions as the previous government was so a lot of times these strikes now are not having the effect that they previously had with the with the cruise government. Kitchener which was much more Langley the workers the interest on the unions the interest so the union strikes are not being as effective now so I will have to see what the unions next try to g.s. Are with regards to layoffs the government is continuing to implement them the number is expected to but doubled by March and it's not the 1st time this government is laying off so many workers between the end of 215 and the 1st quarter of 2016 in they'd of about 10000 workers that were working in the government or in this are in state run agencies and according to government this is a way to make the government more efficient as a whole because it argues that a lot of the workers that were and played by the state were actually New York is that a term used in Argentina to refer to state workers who are ineffective or don't go to work at all was the term. It's actually it has a very interesting origin here in Argentina there's a tradition that we every 29th of the month so the term that refers to these workers that don't go to work or at all makes reference to them just going to work on the 29th to get their salaries paid so why do people everybody's pretty sure of the 29. Do you know of every month. That the origin of that story I don't know it's going out on the 29th there were. People actually abide by that do they do yeah they do if I arrived in Argentina on the 29th ready Mum I'll be served in your house or anybody else's house I'll be served pastor would I whether I like you or not. Yes Yes I'm going to go on the 18th and so for only a week or less for catch up with what's going on at the Sydney Cricket Ground in little back him to bat then they're frozen Jonathan over and then everybody running for Brant was slightly better than it was in the sense that James Vince and Jay Roach you know digging in here they've both got going root has 12 inch has 15 inning of the 38 for 2 because remember they weren't 15 for 2 before to the stamina for a dark cookout for 10 point I think all the England fans in the ground really were pretty petrified that they could collapse to some embarrassing type and lose this Test match quickly but at least Now Ebony with their captain leading the way there's a feeling that come on guys take in this is possible Yeah I think their routes really calm things down James Vinces supported him nicely one key thing I think that because this wicket is not the most venomous there's not that much pace to it that the new ball was really active you saw Nathan Lyon getting spit in phase off the pitch he saw stark as well getting the ball to carry through it nicely but now actually everything's just calm down and England of course a little window while this bulls got softer to really find their way into the game I still think is you know they've got to play cautious we just saw you just mentioned James Vince coming down the wicket I think is about keeping things simple and just really not the finest Australian attack yet because that there's no way England can win the game from here and I don't think so because of course Australia of course such illegal so the amount of time left in the game for England it's about. Time away save in the way of the run Stone runs don't matter us this hour is a strategy I think is quite simple is just if the ball is there the danger is you go so much Michel that you end up almost shutting up shop and poking and prodding and then find yourself in danger the critical thing is going to be playing the ball as you see if it's there to be punched you punch it you know it's a bad ball is bowled you put it away but other than that keep things simple play straight and play along the line of the ball how important is this innings for James Finn singles number 3 a bit of a surprising selection for the tour made a good innings in the 1st up in Brisbane. But is he playing for a 2nd place out here now to potentially interesting thing compared to the last Ashes out here where there was the whitewash lots of players lost their place I think with New Zealand around the corner the likes of in some possibly Stoneman might just a part of that he's almost done just enough to be considered taken along I think a lot to do with how he gets on the team behind the scenes as well as his performance the frustrating thing is he hasn't any stage show that he's a player that should be considered for the next 3 to 5 years so is his place up for grabs potentially I think we might see him in New Zealand I think because there isn't necessarily better candidates knocking on the door but what I would say is he's left open that for the summer young players coming through could take that's Ok Milan is padded up he's next in the best. Car and broad crane and Anderson in them to work it's down $38.00 runs on the board way way behind Australia so Dot and now it's all about protecting those wickets for the rest of today and the whole of tomorrow and every fucking just ask one question how did how do you keep motivated as an England player when as Jonathan was saying it's not about the runs you know actually trying to school. How do you keep motivated here so. Really good question I think is why you know professional is for a reason because you have to be able to find a way to motivate yourself I think everybody's motivation here is different someone like Jimmy Anderson is such pride in his performance he finds a way to keep himself going with godless of the situation is proof that throughout players like Stoneman and Vince the younger players is for them thinking like I deserve to be here reminding themselves that I think there's a range of my devices but the most important thing is is the team have to remind each other of why they hear what they're working for and it's such a difference the difference between a 4 nail last day and a 3 is massive I think in the context of when we look back at the history said they've got to find a way but I think everybody's night space and slightly different Thank you for now thanks very much from a England drugs. Brad there and also thanks to Jonathan. Shannon fine it was my Cuban News in the morning papers Josh is the European politics reporter for Newsweek magazine and website and they're leading with the fallout from Mark who wolves fire and theory book on Donald Trump world particularly on. The book claims about the relationship the kind of detail rewriting relationship between Trump and state down and down and transform our chief strategist the guy who is often said kind. Of a populist right wing anti immigrant. Bomb storming approach that trumped that some say is what won him the election calling to the Congress was pushed out of the trunk of an instruction a few months back according to book their relationship was deteriorating throughout to greet Trump took against him for having poor hygiene they used to be all those shots upin and people used to make fun of on Twitter where you have bags under reside and come across the skin in terms of how you don't try to. Have a p.r. Problem and he told the German he was sort of making Trump's why out. Look look unprofessional and I think it's interesting to see that from so early on there was a teary raging relationship because inside for hours Trump had an ideology it sort of came from down and went down and left the kind of direction in some ways such as there was direction but he went out of the Trump White House and I think it's interesting to see that the 2 men clashed in this way throughout their kind of relationship Yeah and you've also had the only story I suppose is not the fire if you read of the headlines is the question of Is it legal or illegal to smoke pot in America. So this is interesting and debate it's kind of an American white now which I thought. My buddies in the park his listeners in Britain by that we've been covering him as a 1st publication I think is interesting and basically the Attorney General Jeff Sessions is. Opening up a debate as to whether individual states in America have the right to set their own rules on marijuana legalization and he's he's basically clearing the way 1st federal national level prosecutors to go after people who've been. Doing certain things to the marijuana trade even in states where it's legal now this items of really interesting debate within the Republican Party and it's another sign of how the kind of trumpet ministration is taking the Republican Party away from what many of its more establishment figures would consider to be its ideological center ground a kind of a core Republican principle is the idea that different states have the right to call the shots on a lot of important domestic issues and sessions seems to be undermining that and some of the party's more sort of establishment senators and representatives and all little uneasy about that and it's an interesting fall line once again between the kind of Republican establishment and the more. Or sort of populist Trump administration although it is a behind Mrs Sessions do not want children self has slightly kept out of this debate that session is you know is a trump loyalist and he's part of the administration and I think also you know he often sessions uses this phrase in reference to marijuana law and order quote unquote and I was a phrase that was used made a lot of use of during the campaign and the more kind of libertarian wing of the Republican Party the Republican Party that is more concerned with individual freedoms is slightly being left behind whether people Trump whether it be by sessions by the trumpet ministration in favor of a much more kind of heavy handed or thorough Tarion style of Republicanism where did you do all those heavy weight usually states want to talk about the apparent serial killing of cat embrace or so this is actually being a big long running crime story which your listeners might remember there's a mysterious figure out. Variously as the Croydon cat killer the London cap killer then 25 calculus is a mysterious probably one person please thank is blamed for the deaths of about 400 cats 400 animals. A man has now been arrested over a string of cat killings in North Hampton and it is possible or at least all the papers are speculating it's possible that this could be the man now on one hand it's sort of a you know way of one of those crime stories that makes a fun headline but it isn't necessarily that serious but actually in a documentary Aaliyah this year please be talking about this current killer and saying that you know this isn't just a bit of fun this is a guy who has just been fancies deal with this sort of dismemberment and kind of disposal of these bodies and may ultimately pose a danger to human. They have similar fantasies around crimes committed against humans so it's a I think it's some something that's sort of worth paying attention to whether this mysterious kind of much to demonic figure has actually been Court justice. News we go to war us is worth paying attention to what's happening in Sydney. Raveling I suppose the inside tested series the 4th day of the 5th Test and it's all about the fortunes of England at the moment. Go a long long long long way to go to catch up to Australia but as ebony row 3rd row was telling us that it's not about runs that it's about getting not outs as it were nothing they've just escaped a narrow call for that more on that throughout the morning from our team out in Sydney Johnson over and and former cricket a heavy rain for its brand from us thanks for listening thanks for the squad is over we're back with you tomorrow from 1 o'clock. This may be seen by. The government rather b.b.c.
