McAlister . This is about. Which is this. And the other. We thank you. For. The tree. Great piece of music. Kenny Smith featuring Blanche McAllister. And that's one called Faith and that's from an album called Transformation time exactly 10 minutes. Past 6 let's take a look at what's in the papers today and as you can tell lots of big stories I think if there isn't a bit of an exclusive it has to be the sun this morning we'll come onto that in a few minutes with Frist of all we pay helmets to Catalonia says the Sunday Times The Mail on Sunday tells those who mourn the dead in Barcelona we share your grief The observe the things that the sentiments and rituals in the aftermath of another outrage have taken on an air of terrible familiarity and then the papers go on to how we should respond 1st of all the Sunday Telegraph calls for a change of attitude in the stiffening of resolve the West is not being brought punishment on itself it argues is not reopen the spent on itself it does not deserve to be punished rather the West should be far more confident about the way of life that these criminals reject but Times agrees that we should not be intimidated because in its view the jihad is themselves recognise it more sophisticated means beyond their means. The mail is not so sure suggesting that the terror groups really want to set off is a really big vehicle bomb some way on the streets of year it says opera cautions against attack must be improved the observer also fares that Barcelona may have come the new normal in people in Europe may need to get used to the idea that they are walking targets what it favors is a more cooperative working with the e.u. And NATO and action to counter the appeal of radical extremism what we must do it says is imagine a better safer future. Breck's it is as ever these days on the discussion the Sun on Sunday believes that good times are just around the corner it suggest that households will be better off when we leave prices will tumble and output will rise for that view the paper relies on a report by economists including Pat Professor Patrick men fit to whom the paper pays tribute in its leading article he says it remembers one of the tiny one of. I'll start again he was it remembers one of a tiny minority of experts who backed Margaret Thatcher the son tells its readers to trust the man on the right side of history. The 20th anniversary of the death of Princess Diana is approaching the male remembers her in a 16 page supplement others also give prominence to items about the royal family the son Prince for the 1st time a transcript of a late night phone call between the princess and George Michael bits of an exclusive in it they'd be discuss her divorce from Prince Charles the Times believes the most people have forgiven Charles but they have not forgotten the paper gives most of its front page to report that the queen has no intention of stepping aside so that he can take over during her lifetime and finally yes that according to the Sunday Express Prince Harry has been collecting his girlfriend from the tarmac at Heathrow so she can bypass the queues on passport control a well placed source tells the paper it's been happening for a long while yes indeed. Yes. Ted when and that's one coal stand in it's 17 minutes past 6 it's Sunday breakfast b.b.c. Radio Manchester Mike shaft with you right the way through till 9 o'clock this morning let me take a moment and tell you some stuff that's coming up tomorrow of course it's football Manchester City host and just a small encounter and bass happening at the f t had stadium in their 1st home match of the new season. Andy but new city commentator or Old City commentator whichever one will be joined by form a blaze when it Treva sync led to bring you all the action that sport tomorrow evening from 7 on b.b.c. Radio Manchester I predict it's going to be awesome. And now another inspiring story is coming to faith on Sunday breakfast. Can in fact. Keep it off the Canon Adrian. I was a child of a church family Ok Holywood you know them the parents went to. My mother's from they had been to church and my grandfather had been the Virgin the judge and my father took over as they all talk vergers him over to Hollywood and I used to go along on a Saturday to help him clean the church get it right if someday. One time I was about 5 or 6 partly I stood in a poke I have no memory of this pope and said I want to be. Being a bit of a snob decided that yes some was going to be a vicar So if some reason it seemed that was my destiny and I'm so I went through in that village am religious studies and all that might say that is not a good basis for faith I actually do think. It was a calling and I go by the end of my career I do believe I was called it was not dramatic in the way that other people. Call but I was brought out into the community and role to faith it was a very powerful all of my life had a sense however I did. I never became if. I would could let it be that easy. It was a cutie I moved into a hospital chaplaincy hospital chaplain for very many years eventually fetching up that much of steroid hold those hospitals up and eventually then settling into the fever. And living that is a place to minister So that's my story I mean. a mistake. And you find out you didn't make that mistake you made a totally different. Bad is. It's jubilate. The truck we opened the show with today. Was something totally different. It was cold no we're. Exactly 634 this Sunday morning let's take a look at some of the stories you're waking up to a memorial service is taking place later this morning for the 13 victims of the boss alone a terrorist attack. It's been confirmed that work will start next year on creating a new neighborhood in Manchester city center on the site of the former Granada t.v. We play some truly awesome gospel singer. Corrine hall phone from her latest epeat And that's one Cole speak the name don't know much about but I do know she was on one of those television programs where they have competitions like voices and all that kind of stuff and she did very well it would seem what an amazing force Corina Hawthorne and speak the name one more piece of music and it's about to egg and then we'll have our recent voices. Filling time. Because this should never ever learn to help him. And maybe try to lead his poll but just a. 2 to. Leave. Room comment trying to. Guide Sainz leads to luck. To love to hope come along love the peg and it's too soon to be the. It's too hard to hold on to bowl love the paying and it's too hard to remain living. Room or really I can it's true that when the. Half can choose. Something. To. Recent voices on Sunday breakfast. I ordered a monk myself back in 2008. And I made a promise. At the time that I would do some into one of the temple and the Temple it was such a run call it being the fruit. The Temple it we have been run cool and it's been absolutely perfect for us but we have the opportunity to expand. Shows and to build not just the temple but what will be called an assault tool a Movie Star Pool allows us to day in at the temple and only one outside of Wimbledon so it's kind of this is a case and I think the last time it took place it was about 5 years ago the court quite a unification. Recent forces on the Sunday breasts this. Film was born of initially 3 short films and I'm a great fun a film in particular multi narratives so the likes of crash I was inspired to stitch together my own narrative looking at mosques Muslim is right and the far right so tell me what happens in the film in a sense it's Islamophobia attack on a mosque scholar so each story has a different perspective you've got the victim the perpetrator and the witness and that one attack and obviously we see how that impacts on the stories as they fall back into their own lives and the story has a very realistic conclusion with all the smart things of good moral messages as well as being whole for a piece of entertainment now you're enough is that correct I used to be. Now as much I'm busy with the work but I was a professional artist and you feel it's all stereotyped by the road. It's offered to you yes absolutely even when we offer mine. I was noting a particular pattern with all the shoes you know starting school and shop owners taxi drivers the doctors shifting toward terrorist would be terrorist kind of thing and I was getting very very tired of. What to do so you know you got to eat so you know you find yourself where you can't say no to it but it got to a point where you know so I formed my own company to help you cross the. Voices on the Sunday breakfast. Really interesting stuff for the show and I think she's a great actor. Very positively but as you know. Listeners will have encountered on social media and in the news there has been a bit of negativity from from some cultures about Were you surprised by the reaction not massively you know any major change in the Shire and particularly given the nature of social media today is going to get some kind of backlash a lot of people feel very strongly about the show it's part of their childhood is part of their part of their self understanding you know why having a major change to that can be very disconcerting for some people however I have to say the majority of fans who think very positive about the show has always change 35053 year history so it's something which I think most people are embracing well a female Dr Who take the series in an entirely new direction I think in new directions as I was saying it has always changed if you compare the side from the 1960 s. To an episode that was on last series for example it's been very very different where it will change I think some of the dynamics of the storytelling side if you imagine a female doctor coming in saying say 18th century society. And trying to take the lead in the way in which male doctors have done in the past it's going to throw up but new issues about patriarchy and about gender relations and I think it will raise those in interesting ways. The recent forces on Sunday breakfast. Some of the biggest disappointments the championships how often they all around you same boat I'm Not 100 metre disappointment it was a race to fall for the triple and then pick and world champion and then the big the Billy the he rode the villain the persistent period that came after the American Justin Gottlieb did win the 100 meter world championship title and it got me thinking about how we deal with the give us redemption how we look at those people who maybe have transgressed and not done wonderful things so out their career but have every right to be back on the startline roof recent voices on Sunday breakfast. Is think about the Patriots today the young men and women who are wearing the country. Somewhere around the globe they're putting their life in danger they're patriots you are not. You came here today to hurt people. And you did hurt people. And my message is clear. We are stronger than you. You have made our Commonwealth stronger. You will not succeed. There is no place for you here there is no place for you in America. We were here today to bring people together to. I remind you all that we are a nation of immigrants. Native Americans. The 1st ships that came to Jamestown Virginia in 16007 and since that time anyway. People have come to our great country to unite us our diversity. Of immigrants is what makes them so special we will not let anybody come here. So please go home. And never come back take your hatred and take your bigotry there is no place. And we the conversation and I told the president. Has got to be a movement in this country to bring people together. And that his goal. Is intensified over the last couple months it is dividing this great nation we need to work together I told the president that twice be willing to work with you if we can work together to bring people together to stop the hate speech stop the rhetoric in this country we have got to bring people together. As well. And we're even stronger today because of those actions of those people who came with their bigotry. Terry McAuliffe speaking. Limerick was. Saying. To slowly lose. . Moment will leave. The government has to tighten the restrictions on code corners after a number of scams trying to defraud the elderly of their pensions breaking the rules could mean fines of up to half a 1000000 pounds his own business correspondent Joe Lyneham since 2014 almost 3000 people have lost an average of 15000 pounds at the hands of fraudsters persuading them to part with their pension pots most of this stems from cold callers proportioning to be from reputable investment companies urging pensioners to transfer their savings to them while there's already been a ban on some types of cold calling now the government is extending this ban to include anyone selling pensions investments without explicit permission although the new restrictions will not prevent cold calls from overseas survey of 2000 British Jews has revealed almost one 3rd have considered leaving the u.k. Track. Very latest on the traffic and. Things happening already which is unusual for a Sunday morning. Between. 50. Of the inside of the. It is quite a lot it's not really causing too much of a problem just for them to be aware of if. The a 538 will head south around Manchester Airport there's a fallen tree which is half the road closed that's between some bank line and the rumpled pub Totten park it's the passion for power classic motor show today so watch out for traffic on the m 6 junction 950 around not for just a road that starts at 9 o'clock starting rather early at 8 o'clock in just less than an hour at the old showground in the Mottram show so the 6018 might be busier than usual if you're around this morning there is some resurfacing work going on around there with temperate traffic lights and a couple of road closures too if you want to update just 161-129-3649 so Radio Manchester what went well and love is all around now the 15 same reasons strictly will be starting soon and the celebrities Bane and now snow have to admit I'm not down with the kids I don't know any of these people saying I'm only King great to Manchester's t.v. Chef Simon remains daytime t.v. Presenter Ruth Lunsford some of the names confirmed the reason I said I didn't know those people because I know this next person among the famous faces is Reverend Richard Coles most more used to delivering segments than the perfect Pasa Doble a so will he be as member on the dance floor as he is on the pulpit or risk cutting as he is on his Saturday morning radio program a very good morning to you sir. Very good morning to you Mike I know you very well indeed thank you for taking time to be with us I can tell you it's a real pleasure to speak your love yes I did he know programming to pleasure the mind so can you dance well when you say daunce I can sort of move myself around recently and something that sort of falls just off for a walk but before Rush whether I can do that in a way that graces the kind of buckets of glitter they're going to fall on my head I don't know but I see the book is oh it's what shall we say on the lawn. Were you a strictly fan Oh yes I mean I love Strictly avoid the strip but I just thought it sort of perfect such day night entertainment Digital had everything going it had. Bruce who everybody of course is mourning at the moment but it had a competition that was kind of Wolfman inclusive and encourage the best for people it was tolerance of people as they kind of address the steep learning curve of learning to dance or looks in it to laugh when you probably see itself in terms of ability Ed Balls see was a star in his own way and would become more you are you more adventurous than all of that. Adventurousness in my condition at least circumstances might be something to regret really someone said How far do you want to go and I said Blackpool léonie if you died here if I could have physical condition if I could have the gracefulness Whitaker and the kind of guts of Ed Bowles that would be wonderful Now you were of course a pop stop in time again another life yeah are you cool under pressure. I like to think I am but I think like lots of clergy I've got quite good at looking cool while my pulse is racing and and I'm sort of quietly screaming inside so we'll see I mean I'm looking forward to it I do. Love the idea of dogs if you don't it's not really built to be a sort of Great to have I'm going to give it my very best shot but are you a good sport Oh I think so I hope so you sort of have to be don't you I wasn't when I was young I was horribly competitive and I was young and if I began to lose that monopoly which sometimes in a rage to the border pieces went everywhere I could have come down a bit since the is there a particular style of dance you're looking forward to well I really love I mean the Vinnies Welsh is something I like very much I've always enjoyed the Charleston too and I think everyone is kind of waiting with bated breath of my Anjan time tango. But I had to go I had a fishing the other day and I just tried on Aynsley Harriet's trousers sort of previously or because they were the biggest They had I'm afraid of one minute I burst and they had to be repaired by a lady with a pile of elastic and a needle and thread. As I mentioned in the introduction you can be a bit cutting on the Saturday morning show. So are you going to put up with any criticism from the judges or are you going to answer back well I don't know I mean I would hesitate to describe myself as cussing I would like to think that I could hold my own in a corner I don't know and I'm very happy to be I mean I'm sure there will be ample opportunity for the judges to use everything they have in their arsenal of criticism because. I'm going to I think perhaps not be to not be someone who kind of obviously streaks ahead so I should the context of using the word streaking in the context. Could you be the 1st I've probably been the last dancer. How you Parisian is taking They said they actually going to vote for you Are they thinking Yeah well no I think they're pretty and if you. Very supportive actually if I like an imagine because obvious still be on church duty of course to restrict me but I'm looking forward sort of climbing into the pulpit and seeing them holding up him board numbers you know severed with a bit of luck but we'll see and I'm sure they're all going to vote for me he said a bit strongly of course we can't end this interview without mentioning we see you mention him quite in passing earlier it's going to be very strange him not being that mean he wasn't there for the last series for remember correctly but he's really not going to be there this time because his his presence as I'm sure his presence will still be felt I mean he was a wonderful guy Bruce he was part of all our lives he was perfect for strictly and it will be somebody in mood I think as we remember him particularly for all the people who knew him and really love to but Bruce he was entertainment to his fingertips and if anyone would have insisted to the show goes on I'm sure it would be Bruce and that irrepressible spirit I'm sure will provide Well I hope you enjoyed this interview it was an easy one for you if anything's going to make you on edge of this. Reverend Richard Cole is going to thank you very much indeed for taking time to be with us this morning my pleasure thank you very much all of our best feeling. Very days he's going to be on the next series of Strictly we wish him all the best and if he wins he's got to promise to come back and speak to us because by then he'll be so famous he'll not want to speak to the likes of me now Willie. Community walks taking place around various places of worship in Bolton later it's being organized by faith groups in the town chant promise from Bolton interfaith council delighted to say he joins me on the line now a very good morning to yet the London thank you very much indeed for taking time to be with us tell us about this walk. The World. A. Part of the. World that we all try to do as faith groups and interfaith council molding Defense Council to bring communities together in various ways working been one of those things. Hopefully will get a lot of people can identify the council the bulb in the form creation page and mosque community people it's about just over 4 miles long. And stopped off at the barracks jejune Bolton. Grounds of voting city. That is not going to a mosque to the school grounds and the building. And to the friends went as and then afterwards to the with this and. Meet up at the Friends building house at the end for refreshments a number of a reflection give me an idea of what you're hoping to achieve with this walk. It's what I would say that benefits on 1st of all there will be a lot of people we will have the big quite a few Be willing clean because a lot is you know children and families and soon thereafter known I will achieve hopefully. Talk to one another on the way to we can walk again on things make friends a bit of networking but also have benefits. As well as the fact that places of worship in others are opening room and welcoming us you know I'm actually adding a little bit about the building of the place and the science it's a way of making friends mend them leading people they are saying I love them and it's all of a benefits benefit only a win win situation as I mentioned in the introduction you're from both an interfaith council can you give me an idea of what relationships are like between the different faiths in Bolton by God's grace by God's grace. Generally speaking. Both in council and the groups. That work in our strength lies in working together yes there's always going to be the little bits of things unpleasant but generally speaking we work very well if you look at the side of the double double team defense council of the projects in the events we do throughout the. All is designed to bring people together people of faith people of no of a regardless of any color creed or any of the boundaries give us please once again the starting point and when you want people to arrive and exactly where it's going to be the starting point. And the parish as soon as I was straight we need to get together and got a bust long with the mayor of Bolton Council lodger Hayes will be there he'll set us off. And then from there on was real go to the mosque starting this university like I am us both in school fails. Then But this and friends meetinghouse and we hope after the incident did if they're there before. We've learned to start. With the prayers. Victims of the mass alumni. And this is open to any and everybody and anybody everybody Chand Palmach and I thank you very much indeed for taking time to speak to us so you know this morning that events will come as a privilege as I just want on the good work that we are doing to absolutely bringing all the very best to my. 10 minutes. It's my shaft with you right the way through till 9 now around 10000 people will be traveling to the northwest for the annual convention of Jehovah's witnesses later this week the event on Friday was due to be held at the Manchester Arena but with the arena remaining closed following the terrorist attack in May The event is now being held in Liverpool Luke Bracegirdle is a delegate at the convention I'm delighted to say he joins me in the studio now every good morning to you sir good morning Mike I got to me thank you very much indeed for taking time to be with us as I mentioned there at the event should have happened in Manchester it didn't because of the bomb there this weekend more terrorist attacks Barcelona the main one what's your thoughts please Well we're obviously saddened when we hear news reports like the ones in Barcelona also Finland as well where we know that some of. But this is just as one of us has been caught up in knots and of course other events around the country one in Manchester Well you know thoughts as to what the families are still affected with thoughts are very happy to be in Liverpool arranged a short notice and for all for our convention bought sorry we can't help but think about the type of attacks really that are going on and of course the news release this week is that Manchester that rain is going to reopen in September Well we're thrilled to hear about Manchester reopening in September and we've had many happy years that the stuff of supporters a sigh while but also we go to Liverpool stuff who've seen it help in Step 10 and helped us to arrange things that short notice give me an idea of what's going to be happening at the convention what we're really looking forward to the convention it's has a number of talks the theme is don't give up so in light of recent news events there's much reasons perhaps you know how Fed disillusionment or discouragement with the news that we hear but really the message of hope is one that we want to try to hide. Lights and we'll do that through series of talks but also through some multimedia presentations on the videos which have been produced a feature film that says is across all 3 days which is showing in 3 parts which will show really what's been designed specifically for families and how messages from the Bible can actually be very very practical for today's living but give me an idea how how you handle this the stuff that's going on in the world at the moment is truly horrendous when you get 10000 of your people together how do you give them hope I think really by looking at the Bible's message. To show God's plan for the future we we aren't without hope because there is a plan that's been outlined in the Bible and one thing for me that's I was basically encouraged about with the Bible was how it showed that whilst we see these bad things now and they're not here forever and unders it's not just fanciful to say that it's actually solid evidence in the Bible darts God well will bring things better. This event is not just for you who is with this is that correct Very much so we welcome all communities to attack and admission is free and no collections will be taken and. Anybody can attend a Friday study also on the here and over the years where you had the event at the arena in Manchester and this is a crazy question I'm going to ask it kind of what percentages of none Jehovah's Witness come to have a look at what you're doing it's difficult to say really because we we invite all sorts there are many there who are his witnesses obviously but it's our main event of the year and when we look forward to so that's that's a certainty but also many from the public are invited I mean with regards to our worldwide Bible study program we're currently speaking to over 10000000 people who are engaged in that free home Bible study and there are around about 8300000 drivers witnesses in the world so there's more bible studies than the Roger Holmes witnesses so here's another question for you you know when you look at television programs and they want to poke fun at religion they usually pick. How does that make you feel well I think our trademark is the not really nothing out of the deal and that's that's you know we don't mind that because that is our primary way in which we share the good news of God's Word with other people and in some ways we're quite glad it's something that is our trademark and I think to be fair you know we should be respectful of all people's religions on the way that they express their faith and that's I was and I think we take it with a wry smile I think we try to do that on the show a final question how did you come to faith Well my my my parents were Jehovah's Witnesses so it's automatic props to think that it's I became it was witness automatically I wasn't it's entirely true I. Sort of looked at that and looked at the religion and looked at the Bible and that started to fascinate me the way the Bible can talk about history and almost be like the fly on the wall documentary but also talk about off future and not only give us hope but also it gives this future forecast almost like a weather forecast for our if you. Today and that fascinated me and I. Got in touch of some of the Jehovah's Witnesses through my parents and I you know help me to study more about it now from Dr was able to you know of course type take that further at the weekend I will see many who have had very very different path our interviews with ones who have had different different journeys to myself and they've been able to sort of cats and the Bible come to their own understanding and make that personal decision and very quickly when and where so the events is this Friday Saturday and Sunday so that's the 25th 6th and 7th of August it starts at $920.00 each day and there are sessions all through the day and if you want to find out the free program on our website you'll be da talk there's a link just for the link to don't give up Luke and I thank you very much indeed for being with us this morning thank you Mike he is. a British paramedic has denied being a hero after describing how he tried in vain to save the life of a woman who was attacked in the Finnish city of 2 coup on Friday in the country's 1st ever tourist terrorist incident has urns e Bay was stabbed repeatedly as he tried to help the victim in his 1st interview since the attack he told the b.b.c. In Mottram So watch out again for many people making their way there particularly on the a 68 and the updates let me know if you count the number 161293649 think it started 4 and a half. So. The radio just. Sat. Here. This. With. A. Terrorist attack police continuing to hunt for the driver of the dozens of people. A. Group. Carried out the attacks but it's not yet clear whether the attacks were directly connected to the group or merely inspired by it the Greater Manchester Muslim community is a group that represents. So Rissa Khan is chair of the group and I'm delighted to say he joins me in the studio now a very good morning to say good morning Mike and to all your listeners also thank you very much indeed for taking the time to be with us now you have family or you have family in Barcelona know my colleagues have family and friends in Barcelona so tell me please your reaction to Barcelona. Like any other man communion we went through this just a few months ago and of course issues and people from around the world they extended. Their condolences to us and it's something we hope we never have to reciprocate special to the people of Boston Lona But sadly here we are we having to return the condones is that they offered us and we are in shock also you know every time we think hopefully this won't happen again because it happens again. How do you feel and I know it's a crazy question but I'm going to ask it how do you feel as a Muslim when something like this happens and I Yes you claim to be Muslim or whatever they call this week claimed to be Muslim how does that make you feel. It's not a crazy question is a tool it's a very fair question. I asked myself Is this who I am is this who I am as a Muslim and of course each time this happens we will ask ourselves. Does this represent us and the answer the same each time. But I what I would ask your listeners to do is just take a little bit of time to get away from the media narrative that they're being told You terrorism them as evil good and just trying to understand who these people are and trying to frame this in a wider context these are basically our Nazis. Extremists who've gone out of control and every society every coach has them for example in America Charlottesville we saw it just there. And what's really remarkable is that. The amount of things that we share with each other these extremists whether they label themselves white supremacists religious extremists you know ISIS whatever they want to call themselves actually very they have a lot in common with each other you know they hate women they hate gays they believe in supremacist ideology them and us they believe in violence they love running crowds of innocent people for example as we saw in Charlottesville and 9 Barcelona in London earlier so they have a lot more in common if you wouldn't stand that this is not a Muslim think this is actually some very very mentally disturbed individuals who are trying to divide as then things start makes to start to make sense how do we stop it. It's a good question. When we formed after the attacks. We this was part of the reason the Etra why we formed we want to stop this because we were like Ok look enough of the Not In My Name enough of Islam is peace we're actually going to do something about it and of course that doesn't mean that we're accepting guilt or liability but what it does mean is accepting responsibility that we've got to keep a part to play in the solution how do you solve this 1st one to understand this. Why did these things happen. And the root causes lie in things like unemployment. Injustice cetera because this is the breeding grounds where the leaders of. These groups recruit vulnerable individuals and that's where it goes back to vulnerability a lot of these people are vulnerable themselves and that's they're being exploited and we seeing the pattern over and over again and we need to find a way to intercede to change the narrative what can we do how do we change that narrative it's not the 1st time I've asked this question it keeps coming up we need to find a way to change it because these people are reaching out to these young people so if I can give you an example of what we're doing we've launched a project called Ask a Muslim where we're going to the high streets of various towns in Greater Manchester and we're setting up a stall with tea and biscuits and asking people to come and ask any question they want so what we're trying to do is get rid of that divide them and us and it starts from there but of course Team biscuits is not the only solution. The solution lies in 2 bits there's a hard core of these elements that will not understand anything but violence the devoted to violence and of course don't we can stop them is physically restraining them however that's a very small part of the solution maybe one percent 99 percent of the solution involves. Communities coming together and tackling projects that affect us so for example the segregation places like Oldham in Bury. Between white and Asian in places like most I'd seen African Caribbean communities and. Other community the minority communities how do you break those down. And the solution to tackle terrorism is actually same solution that. Will tackle the other issues like grooming and racism it is one community's come around and say for example form a community project designed to increase education standards in Barrie and they form things like homework clubs so graduates from the Asian community will go in and say Right Ok time to pay something back I'll go and help on Saturday in homework club to help kids get through the g.c.s.e. That's one of the projects that we're doing another project we're doing is we're going mentoring young people and going into school said embarrassed as lawyers judges actors actresses people made in our community to go and show young people look there is definitely a different way and then when these young minds are approached by these it is logical fanatics the breeding ground is not so 1st of all for them is there any way of stopping those fanatics from even disseminating that message. Are you talking about online Well it's happening online it's happening in other ways as well yes of course. Again having a counter-narrative people like me now I didn't used to do this I didn't go and speak out last year or you know the year before it's only recently I've started doing enough so you know sing a lot of smart young Muslims now going join the battle with. A counter-narrative you know. A lot of these so-called jihadi as they're actually d.i.y. Muslims didn't really go into a mosque and understood what Islam is. Just like some of the Christian fanatics in the Bible Belt in America you know they've never really gone to. A normal church you know they are d.i.y. . Religious Christians or fanatics and they go into teaching themselves online so what we need to do is go and challenge them wherever whenever we can but the one thing I will ask can the listeners to do is but don't be afraid the antidote to fear is knowledge what we need to do is go and visit a mosque go and speak to Muslims and retreat not into fear but into our values the values of tolerance compassion because when we extend these to each other that's where the solution is going to be that to me was perfectly illustrated by that the mother of the young woman who was killed in Charlottesville who spoke so clearly she had every vision of what she wanted her daughter's death to achieve and that was bringing people together to also write and key she was a heroine for for people like you and I you know just like these fanatics hold the leaders of acute as heroes for them or. Al Baghdadi as a hero for them these people are heroes and we need to understand you know our martyrs and we counter them and you are right this is the example we should we should follow you know forgive but learn learn our lessons a final question. Just an easy one are you confident for the future. If you'd asked me this week off to the terrorist attacks I'll be honest with you a lot of it was I was unsure of myself you know I just set off on this journey and I was thinking you know what on earth I'm going to do it a few months later I am so confident let me tell you why because the Christmas the Muslim community the group that we formed it's grown into something a lot bigger. It's actually being led by a lot of people who know even Muslims who have help from professionals in creative individuals who are class themselves as Muslims they actually would class themselves as part of other minority communities so we've got people from the African-American community. The females from from. From white communities Dick they've come in to lend their expertise to us you know creative skills etc And another thing that we've got now a change that we'll see within our group is we've got females and young people at the forefront going with the so-called self-appointed community leaders I think that's what's gives me gives me confidence vessel or is a cow from the group the Greater Manchester Muslim community can I thank you very much indeed for being with us this morning and wish you all very best for the future thank you so much. The same way to a man just 20 and 20 and a Hoth minutes past the very latest traffic in travel from Nick Robbins 38 seconds later and the way the m 62 was crowded accident adds junction $22.00 that's rich with more the terms of the 672 there's a link on the ex's leopard it's not actually affecting the motorway itself too much but the might be some delays you get off the motorway adds junction 22 around much as a fallen tree has left the road closed once they deal with I'm sure there are trees surgeons there now is the a 538 Wilmslow road southbound which is close between somebody playing on a road near the ramp a pod and of course we have the passion for classic motor show today which often delays on the m 6 around junction 19 and heading into knots but and towards mere itself from a show started some time ago this morning at the old Mottram show ground so again quite a few people making their way there particularly using the a 6018 I've also spotted these like you rode around asking if you had been towards Chaddock lane it is looking a little slow there eastbound towards Magister around up mostly coming a little. The busy side that and the updates get in touch if you count the number is 016129361 night and Sunday mornings with a monotony. SONEs all buttons that relates to cats and dogs. Going to last too long this morning from the 9 b.b.c. Radio Manchester. Might show. Radio Manchester. * Jim the ball the and that's one. Time to 25 minutes past 8 faith communities mean as to how to raise the profile of black and Asian and ethnic all minority ethnic communities Greater Manchester health care providers a holding a community consultation meeting this Tuesday it's a shape the health care agenda and Manchester's budget for African and Caribbean communities but why did faith leaders need to get involved joining me in the studio is Reverend Anthony Mason and on the line Reverend Charles Kwok. They're both members of the Caribbean and African health network Antony is also chair of sickle cell Manchester while Charles is co-chair of the faith that we're gentlemen can I wish you a very very good morning and a very warm welcome for. Good morning Mike thank you very much indeed let's start with the u.n. To tell me what's led to this consultation and what's led to this this basically was the brainchild of a cough a root Bruce who was doing her Ph d. I met with very on the back of the movement of black lives matter this was a radio interview subsequently she did some work within the community to know ph teachers looking up and cardiovascular disease and diabetes and so short and from that she cheated really saw there was a need to just an academic exercise for her so there was a great need for. The community to engage and by default She did a lot of her work within the churches in terms of trying to get her passage to participants on board and we met through that and I really saw that she had a passion to see things move from the paper into the community so this is what basically helped to for can which is comprised of professionals academics and such well why is it important to get faith groups involved in this. Already And so it's really important to get 3 groups involved and you know we've designed a health care because historically we've played groups have. You know accessible knowledge and understanding of our communities and people who live within our communities and it's also good is that you know I'm afraid groups have access to people who are traditionally labelled you have to reach you know groups so when we have conversations we're able to bring reach we're able to open those to our partners but also bring them on the table for you know our people to recognise that you know those who have the budgets and stuff are on the table and they want to listen to what they have. And tell me child about the event on Tuesday. So on Tuesday is that even when he holds on Tuesdays I don't. Have big awake with Dylan as the throne developed in a memorandum of understanding between the faith communities across pretty much just that and the great amongst the health and social care population who is sort of he did that Resign of health care was good at mine just so today's event is bringing together faith leaders and community those from the African and Caribbean communities to say there is something going on health providers want to listen to you what are your needs what are the issues that you've bought one of the common sense on any gods in the health provision and then more importantly encourage people to get involved with the whole redesign of health care. Actually how big a problem is this because I know of certain groups who have funding for a year 2 years 3 years but then the groups this is how big a problem is like that's a must have problem because what happens tends to happen as Charles quire pointed out is that we have a wealth of knowledge and experience and being able to engage with our communities and what happens turns happen what's happening starkly is that a lot of the work has been done sometimes the 3rd sets of the tree organizations goal bend over backwards important over 200 percent and it's expunge into the main system so therefore short term funding and then you have to redesign yourself or reconfigure a self to try and address me with a phone does which is not necessarily the same an agenda that you started off with so it's a massive problem and Mike something that really needs to be addressed and we need to continue more for nding to be able to address and help to impart to me choose possibly on the burden of the n.h.s. System and correct me if I'm wrong here please because I could well be is the whole funding of health in this area changed because we now have a. We it's down to the evolution. Both of those in-sync they have an impact so that's why can't we speak directly to the mayor and to whoever runs the evolution and say yeah we are this needs to be sort of ironically there's been some meetings that we've I've been involved with with people like John Rouse I'm yet to meet with a month more would happen and these people are now keen to actually engage with horse and say how do we redesign this system to be able to engage and bring equity So yes the mare is being influential in terms of what's happening and particularly evolution we're in a position where Of the 6 bill that's actually around table that we can actually get a slice of this and we can actually start to reformulate and reconfigure rate things to make sure there is a benefit across the northwest front Jones Very quickly can you tell me when and. This event is on Tuesday so until 6 o'clock till 830 will be meeting of a transformation a community resource and. You know just parent alongside the station it will be great to see as many African Caribbean community leaders and also in the fray groups we have there's a recognition that people from minority backgrounds have a lot you know up the 20 a fav group so we're bringing them together on Tuesday evening right behind alongside a Play Station gentlemen can I thank you very much indeed for taking time to be with us wish you all the very best with the event on Tuesday and all the best with your future work as well much appreciate thank you might be right thank you. England's cricketers have secured a crushing victory over West Indies a edged Bastien taking 19 wickets on the 3rd day to win by an innings and 209 runs Alastair Cook was named man of the match after making $243.00 runs and he says it's now vital they build on their win in the 2nd Test at Headingley which starts on Friday a real sneezing 3 days and it's no use want to come again to ride outside as everybody is a laid back up consistency which you know obviously after he does South Africa you know that back it up last 2nd when the good win was very good we got the all genes to build another gun and finally in speed raise Premiership Belleview I says Beat less the Lions 50 points to 40 I'm not sure it was a crushing victory I think that's a strong word don't. Like b.b.c. Radio Manchester. I think it was a. Sunday breakfast b.b.c. Radio Max must just mention this by the way a very good friend of mine in fact the legend of this parish for many years ago I used to work with him there is a fantastic photo now I don't know if it is made into any of the newspapers but it certainly online is a very good friend of mine lives down south somewhere Bristol way and he held up a sign at the Test match yesterday he's of I think he's from St Kitts part of the West Indies of course of the Caribbean and he held up a sign yesterday saying let's make Caribbean cricket is great to get an. Absolutely brilliant Good morning to you Mr Pemberton Mike Sweeney is back from his holidays. To go with the sixty's classics plenty of top choose from day and I get to pick one of them and today I pick this. So you'll hear a little bit later on with Mike Sweeney between 12 and 3 crime something good from her immense hermit's joining us today to go over the papers is Sam Brady from Warrenton He's a former management consultant a failed but a smug I'm sure you know the story by now and a stand up comedian and a motivational speaker a very good morning to you sat morning Mike we will speak more in a moment but can I please ask you to bring us our thoughts for this week. We were. Doing field for the day and I sometimes worry that I might come across a bit pompous as if I'm saying to the people of Greater Manchester and I look here I've something very profound and wise to tell you you military is the key to wisdom but whenever I have a wise thought or a moment of insight I can't help feeling incredibly pleased with myself one clever tweet and I think on the Dalai Lama. About 1500 years ago the great Buddhist poets sat down to meditate by the young sea river during his meditation he had a profound experience for a few wonderful moments he saw the world clearly unhindered by his ego in Buddhist terms the worldly wins inspired he wrote the following verse the worldly winds cannot move me for I'm sitting right on the golden purple Lotus Blossom pleased with his poem handed it to a messenger take their so cross the young sea river as a gift to the child must the 4 year in of the great temple of the Golden Mountain. The next day suit on post surprised when the messenger 100 the poem back to him and even more surprised when he saw that the great master for you and had written beneath his verse a single word fart. Nowadays self-help guru who say we should surround ourselves with positive people but this doesn't mean we should only be friends with people who tell us what we want to hear without critical friends to tease us for our food we start to believe our own hype before we know it belief becomes dogma spirituality becomes self righteousness and values can become violence the scariest people in our world today from Billiton leaders to religious fundamentalists seem to be current surprised by an inability to take criticism or to laugh at themselves. Fortunately for me most of my mates are stand up comics comedians deflate egos for a living they are the guardians of humility and a search make excellent if slightly annoying friends. Seeing what foreign had written. Quickly crossed the river he bowed to for you in then asked Why did you not fart I'm a poet. Points mild suit on. The worldly winds could not move you and yet all it took to blow you across the river was a fart. Now that's what I call a friend. Frank goodness I never comment on the forests. The same way to man just travel back with Sam in a moment but let's get the very latest on the traffic and travel where Nic Robertson speck you back it's an ill wind westbound on the m 62 out of junction $22.00 for us with more an accident still having a length load on the exits that are not affecting the motorway too much itself but there is a length treasured there so if you're heading towards the 600 to push with more I watch out for potential destruction at least Wilmslow road Magistrates Court southbound on the street that fallen trees still lead leaving the road closed between some bike lane an old tree on the road we have a little bit of slow traffic if you head in between Hendley and waving at the moment much as drug looking a little on the busy side just not sure why that is looking a little slow Don't forget we do have the Mottram show today at the old show ground in Mottram that started at 8 o'clock this morning so the a 6 a 18 might be a little busier than usual and later on in fact. Yet not too far away at the passion for power a classic motor show starts so the m 6 northbound a little heavier than usual and also the a 50 in the a 556 any updates get in touch if you count the number 161993649 what ever gives you the idea that you're funny nothing that's why I do this thank you sillies sixty's toxics the 60s just say sure but do they keep on keepin on just like they are supposed to every Sunday lunchtime I'll keep those sixties memories alive and kicking I'll give you a classic rock from the day from every single year a decade ago those great billboard hits. I know it's always we are Sweeny ages with Bob who will be in swinging Sweeney's sixty's classics from the new b.b.c. Radio Manchester. My p.c. Radio in Manchester. Yes it is and still in the studio with me. And he failed but this monk a former management consultant now a comedian and motivational speaker now you've been looking over the papers for us this morning what have you found. While I was just looking at this story in The Sunday Times about a Scotsman walks into a bar this time of the year I'm normally at the Edinburgh Fringe this year I worked out how much money I lose every day to go on holiday to Crete and so where I'm a lot more relaxed than I normally am at this time ever so it's quite interesting to see what other people are up to you know there's a story about the return of some time because of the political climate now but the interesting thing is you know what is the role of comedians when you know politicians are so I will to make fools of themselves without any help and that's what's happening you've got some and is there doing here a one man show you know something I intend to do and I'm still going to ignore mentioning on the air now to talk to my producer about doing a story on this because I watch an awful lot of American programs I can now because it's all over the Internet and I think he's very making fun of the president not surprisingly but I just wonder what effect it's having on people you know yes you can joke about this but people are a seen the nonsense that's going on and then see these guys and girls joking about the I'm just I'm just not sure yeah I know I agree I think in the past when politicians were very sort of pompous and you know it made sense to book with Donald Trump I mean actually it's not a laughing matter when I say that as a. Yeah but but it isn't it's too easy to make fun of him and by doing it you can actually miss the important let's move on so yeah well so it got so there was a story that I liked in the Sunday Mirror which was about chimps in the zoo and scientists have found up when people go to the zoo they'll stand there and they'll imitate the chimps and make fun of them and all of that what they found in a study of chimps when visiting there is after the visitors a lot of left the chimps imitate the visit really Yeah which I really like though apparently they tilt their heads and point and you know it. Feels like they're getting their own who would have been if most. Stories about Mo Farah Yeah what's the story so the story is in the Observer and so today far as last. 3000 metres this afternoon the story is really about lingering suspicions of doping. His former coach who's in trouble for doping and he's been under investigation by the u.s. Anti-Doping Agency. What strikes you about this is no known of us want to believe that has taken drugs you know he's a hero and it would just be awful and the thing that strikes me is that drug cheats ruin sport No it's not just by taking drugs and such but by cost in this down. Yeah so it makes very difficult to really enthusiastically support someone without that lingering doubt you know. And this is a problem I have to tell you is that when they line up for the 100 meters or whatever the fall by whatever each is thinking how many of these people are on drugs yeah you know what is this race clean Yeah in fact recently in the papers there was a release from some years ago where nearly everybody in it since then has been found I mean it's really I don't know how it's going to be resolved but I don't and it is a shame. Because I mean some athletes who are clean and there was a new found the Get a life to it yet you have a favorite picture yet it's in the Sunday Telegraph and it's a picture of young people forming a human pyramid in Mumbai I used to work a little bit in Mumbai years ago and very fond memories of the place and this is very religious festival diarrhea not in the story of Lord Krishna stealing butter and so they form a human pyramid and then they have this earthen pot full of Kurds that I smash it and oh it's but you're everywhere is it and you would think it's probably an easier way. Than Foreman human pyramid but it is spectacular it's a great picture can I thank you very much indeed to be with us and look forward to the next night you join the sound of Brady thank you might lead you of this parish legend it's a good thing I don't comment on the thought. Of 4 Tops of course and that's one call Baby I Need Your Loving time 9 and a half minutes to 9 so 9 and a half minutes to go before I have got to go make way for Jimmy and Ayman between 9 and 12 now a man from Trafford is hoping to help make a career in medicine more accessible to those from on the represented and disadvantaged backgrounds Rajiv's set he founded becoming a doctor as a national organization to support prospective and current medical students now the group's announces hosting the U.K.'s 1st national health careers conference in October delighted to say he joins me in the studio a very good morning to say good morning Mike thanks for having me on no problem what made you want to become a doctor so growing up in Trafford Trafford General Hospital which the 1st I just hospital and the country and me from an early age was always interested in science but health care in general visiting the doctor say my g.p. And. Saying what's going on in the family and just health care in general so that's when I made the decision at 15 to explore that some so arrange some work experience placements at the ranch to all infirmary and some monetary placements and I really enjoyed that and I thought I could see myself in this role but say not I think the decision that 16 year olds have to make who says she didn't have to and such an early on you can't make it just before you apply for you cos. It's often because even if you've got a month's work experience of 2 months you don't know what it's like and for the doing it so what's your expertise 1st of all are you ready to be not a g.p. I'm still in medical school so I've taken time out this year to do a masters and I'll be returning to complete medical school Lisette some. Kind of Barry is I don't know if you faced them we'll talk about that what kind of memories you think people from the. Disadvantaged backgrounds face in becoming a doctor I think there are quite a lot of barriers actually say the Medical Schools Council published reports on this very topic and because of that we see more widening participation in our reach programs across the country said barriers such as actually not knowing a doctor apart from the g.p. Not knowing anyone who's been to medical school not knowing how to get into that position seen as like many other professions as like an old boys all girls network . So just that she having the the aspiration is difficult to foster If you don't know anyone who's done it before you so I think role models specifically school role model so from a school who might have gone on study medicine so I was encouraged to kind of bring their own students back because they would be the best role models in Ashley. My blazer so I can do that I'll show you my school but we have to accept it is also very difficult cools to go all the way have the staying power to go all the way because it's yours isn't it yes it is 5 to 6 years. 6 years if you decide to do an extra degree within the medical school program it's an integrated degree like so I'm doing a Masters this year. So you do have to be dedicated and committed you have to be well disciplined I wouldn't say you have to be Einstein but you'd have to be interested in learning about science and how that applies to the human body what's happening at the conference so the conference is called a national conferences for all health care it's not just medicine that will be obviously of strong focus on medicine because that's what becoming a doctor has set out to do you so it's taking place on Saturday 7th of October and we have a very extensive program going from a natural operating theatre at the conference students can actually dissect their operating there to life again to over 20 speakers from the General Medical Council British Medical Journal. Medical Schools Council war colleges and medical schools and across the country. Will have a program covering medicine dentistry nursing a matter of. Physiotherapy pharmacy physician assistants and much more and it's tele free 15 sign this is you could question How long did it take you to put this together because some major undertaking definitely a move in planning it since last year so it's being quite a major undertaking but we've had great support so professional about management of conference production from explosive growth which are based in Manchester so they specialize in producing conferences and who are you looking. To come to the conference and what are they going to get from it and he wants a student so no age discrimination that anyone who's interested in health care because we have specific sessions for mature graduate students who are. Most of us are we from 14 to 19 I mean already had a vote hundreds she decided to as a friday are expecting a 1000 we have capacity 50000. So it's looking to be a great day and it's free for she decided to go online becoming a doc says it's becoming a d r Ok u k Ok straight to national health crazed look at u.k. And it's just not right page and you can sign up well I think it's an absolutely brilliant idea. If somebody comes with a little bit of interest are you going to be in the position to really spot interest definitely we've got some really exciting speaks in organizations that lead to interactive activities not just like has any Let's just walk a few a few minutes have that in the morning and then getting on students' rights of exhibition workshops they can engage with the universities have a mock interview for example if you and yet that scene all and more about what being a doctor or a mass entails say something for everyone welcome thank you very much indeed for being with us Rajeev said he. Really Well great thanks very much my purpose.
