Do you live in a Polish or a poet of London. To listen to it. Go Thanks. Now Dame Dorsey Basile was the youngest British principal at the Royal Ballet in 1989 in 2007 she just. To retire at the age of 38 while she was still in peak form during her career she became known for her post to campaigns modeling and photographic shoots well now we can see her as a judge obviously on B.B.C. One Strictly Come Dancing but she has brought out this most beautiful book it is called Darcey Bussell evolved which is. Memoir but also comprising of so many beautiful photographs that most of us have never seen before Darcey Bussell welcome to The Afternoon Show thank you very much. First of all I've just said it's an odd Let's come clean I've just said to have you managed to have such beautiful skin when it is spent probably most of your adult life and a lot of your adolescence covered in makeup yes very thick sage make up yes not the best makeup when you see it up place either and you're sweating and everything but there's a reason for that but you just and very shy it was trying to get it all off and making sure that your skin had a break but yes now it maybe it's the jeans I've been lucky I don't feel that. You look fantastic but they say ask a busy person I mean you're spinning so many plates and I do think it keeps you held healthy and fit the more you do wouldn't you agree I think so for me as well I think for me Young is my down thing I think that's you know I endorse that to anybody I meet is if you darn you feel young and you feel better about life. Of all the photographs and there's so many I was reading this book in bed last night just on my own exclaiming to myself Oh my goodness truly I mean this is my favorite photograph is of your feet Oh sorry of Thank You look tired feet but they're and they're bound and you look at because when you do when you don't straight when you sit when the judges sit with Claudia I love I only ever watch the arches of your feet because there's so all and that comes from the year is and years who took the photograph of your feet. An amazing photographer and he is really fascinating as he was it was just of you know a fashion shoot of every nice clothes but he wanted to for me to express a movement with every outfit which it was a lot of fun but he said oh can I just have you have bad feet and I said why not say pretty you really show what you want to see him of feet and he's got to see all the what the guys on the on the days point she is and it is very telling I think when you suddenly see the dancers foot without the beautiful point you on that's the SAT and then you know and realize the work that case and you see always in it and you see the strength you can just say well the strength in those feet that's very kind eights we're told See use our feet like a hand to basically has to be as agile as the hand and his name bull but also it has to take the weight of the jumps and and of course as a classical ballet dancer is the point work which obviously is quite an extreme The other thing that the I love that our pictures had another one of my favorites is when Dame Annette develop is your photograph of her having he's having Don't Sleeping Beauty and I love the script that goes with these photographs because you say you know she she started the will battle a Dash 8 yeah it was the founder I know and she I think gosh in the picture and she must mean about and about 100 something 102 I think I remember and she was just this incredible force this woman that had this a mic you know this extraordinary idea that she wanted to follow through that British ballet was going to be making history in the classical ballet wealth and you think of the history of classical ballet is so old you know from the Italians to the Russians to the French has they all this history and we S. Such a young history in classical ballet but she wanted us to have a really good stamp in history and her vision of how we create our own style as. I had my her extraordinary She was tough and she need that she had to in that era I think from the one you knew late 1930 S. Forty's she had to be the man director she had to deal with men to get us on in theaters and to be seen and to be respected I never thought about that you're absolutely right because it was a man's world then yes very much and she was tiny Yes yes this tiny beautiful doll that had this amazing vision that we could create our own works create in she put basically as fast and she knew that they were going to be OS style and our trademark as you say in the script next to the photograph this is why I love the book because there is so much that you wrote that we the audience member didn't know when you say she'd sat through that ballet and you said you were nervous even though she was in her dotage because she would still know what Gigi to do what you done wrong. And he said but she would also have appreciated how exhausted you were having a rule yes then the main role incivility that is a role or I mean is an old story obviously but for the ballerina it is probably one of the most strenuous roles but it's sort of your base if you can't do that you're not really respected to go on and do anything else so when you've got that on your belt as a ballerina then this amazing statement that you can get free that because of what is expected of you you technically but also the narrative how long the ballet is as well I don't want to put people off and I don't hearing all because it is a beautiful because it showcases the whole company as well it's not just about the ballerina and how you work as a team to produce the show but she would have created their version of Steve music as this was this old Russian production and. It had to be recreated into all style and we have a stamp on it so it's very individual free company but specially for the Royal Ballet and it was made famous by Margaret Fontayne when they 1st went to America because the Americans had never seen a production like that they'd never seen a 3 act ballet all of such history but also showcasing the whole company so to do it you have such pride when you can accomplish it you never really happy but just to get for it and feel strong and feel that you've done your best and it was wonderful to perform at the end of it to hear all this actually because I know you knew nothing about the history of Sleeping Beauty and what it meant from adults as pointed out there are so many pitches I talk about she was so tiny and you were one of the 1st told ballerinas we never seen ballerinas with Leno you know they were there was one hour I love as Dame Beryl grey she was this beautiful ballerina and she's still you know this beautiful woman and she's in her ninety's just 10900 stunning and she me and she was very tall for her era as well and in British ballet I think we had a style where the dances went toward and I. Gained that confidence as soon as I started guesting and realised when I went the Paris Opera or New York City Ballet or the Marion ski I suddenly was an unusually tall but I was told for the audiences here and say that was hard to break that mold and change people's perceptions that you know I could still play Juliet who's 14 but I'm toll and athletic dancer but I can still be a good actress and even because my height wasn't going to get in the way it is just trying to break the mold but you know I think every artist is trying to create a different mold and be recognised so I raised I was quite proud that I was told also lead you to an eyeful gotten of how much modeling you did obviously because of your height and your grace and all these photographers that you've worked with you know some of the most famous photographers in the world and of course you you mortal for. Gap the one that how did that happen I don't know I suppose I was happy to say yes. A lot of really lovely office came my way and in a with so intense and busy but it was really exciting to be more commercial and there was none to standing that we had to step out of the box a bit of our bubble this beautiful artistic Welden creating you know so many hours in the studio to create works for the stage but we knew we had to be seen by another audience so to be asked to do something like a gag I mean it was I think was on the side of a boss for a gaffe I had with my leg up to the side it was so weird saying this bus pass and I thought that's me how cool is that I mean it didn't last very long as the as these ads do but it immediately reaching out to a new audience so I knew it was essential that we did it however all it was and how sometimes it was seen as as not the done thing well because we'd never put this audience now for this generation they wouldn't realise these prima ballerina as they were just wrapped in cotton wool we never saw them in with Harry we weren't allowed them out yet we weren't allowed out basically that thing in the theatre and what you did and I don't want to talk about this because when I watch you on straight day and I always think oh she would have turned up on time she would have got everyone on time because I did a little ballet in the one thing is discipline discipline discipline ballet dancers the most disciplined of all old has that gone with you in life would you never be late we just ferry conscious of not letting anybody down you knew you realise I mean when we you know create a production or anything and everybody that's involved it's not just about you when you're right and there's no hierarchy system even though your principal very young you're working as hard as you are in the court about it and you respect everybody a working with and to let anybody down would be really disgraceful and say that has followed through I wouldn't want to put anybody in a bad position or make the. Who feel that they can do their job well because of my attitude is wonderful. So Democratic It really could we just saw there are so many photographs I'm jumping all over the place because I realize we're running out of time let's talk about the closing ceremony of the 2012 Olympics so here is a dancer whose body must be insured for thousands I would have thought you know no but if you think well you've gone through the lifts and their arsenals and the injuries and everything else and then they expect you to actually abseiling abseiled from the top of the arena over the arena or part technics you did you say to your agent I don't know if this is a good thing to do immediately go yep I'll do that I think a bit crazy idea enjoy. Doing things that are off the wall you know I'd never I've done a lot of events and a lot of really amazing Darla's and there's opportunities only common a lifetime and to get that opportunity to perform the closing time in place and I had been retired for nearly 7 years and I thought Whoa I would say I always said I would never make a comeback but how stupid would I be to turn this one down so you know you crazy I enjoy taking risks and but this seemed a calculated risk it was one chance to do something and to celebrate an amazing 2 weeks of our athletes and it was so exciting to be part of it was terrifying but exciting and if you want to see the pictures of what goes on behind the scenes and every step of that jump it's in the book and just finally my favorite There are so many wonderful pictures but who's the guy is he cool Patrick the photographer who you are dressed as the prince and he's daughter the very young girl that was also illegal. His daughter Al Gore See I saw her he's easy photographer and he's daughter is dressed as a ballet dancer and you're dressed as the Prince is one of the most I think she's in about her thirty's now really we did that very early on in New York I think I was on tour and they said Oh we'd love to do this. Of you can you stay on and it was in the holidays and I remember going. To work with a great talk for the in New York and it was one of those they Steinem's where they spent a week doing a spread effect across so we were that like 5 days just doing day after day of their all of that across with this amazing guy and I was we have an. American from . Cynthia Harvey and so it might have and really got to know her really well I'd be more shing half Yes yes he is as she guested with the role ballet and dancer of director and then I was adding a fight issue with her besides this wonderful to talk for he just wanted to share all wealth in a different way and a very powerful woman way but when credibly feminine at the same time is really yeah it was brilliant I just loved working with different artists that had different talents and different views of how to express out and I was felt very privileged in the the little His daughter was divine she had MY POINT she's on that . That she rolled up bronze had nice to say divine and she's in these pictures constantly imitating art everybody so we had to have her in that but that they went into value you know and that way as it was a lot of ladies for I don't know if I've done the justice people know you have a certain how it's beautiful but I love the way you end it because it's open ended isn't it really yeah there's a sequel to has to be a sequel I mean there is there are all straight yeah there is I love to sell Don's and with a document she's that I you know I've been able to put some fact across for a couple of documentaries in that and it's really important that we carry on that passion through other mediums and if I can keep that out by and be so happy and finally because I always talk about this on in one of my favorite ballastic expressions all steps is that will sell Oh ma i so would you like to show my teeth . A little bit as it will have all their hair all gone out in front I'm asking dogs to do about. Da thing I love it thank you so much for coming in Darcey Bussell evolved is out now is stunning and I'm keeping hold of my copy thank you thank you . in about Darcy actually. This is from somebody says Joe why do you say to dos you'd like to be on Strictly I wouldn't like to be on Strictly to be honest I think he would have said this to Darcy I do think Strictly is probably had it's time do you know. It's very interesting actually listening to a trail that we've got going out at the moment and I think it was Ross Noble talking to. Us today. Saying he doesn't believe. That arts should be competitive although as somebody pointed out he probably was up for a comedy award but I don't know whether it was or not he's won a few so yes and then I was a massive fan of straight and I'm a massive fan of Darcey Bussell I'm not a fan of the programme now I do know plays it's getting a good audience because it's good because there's some rubbish on and it's certainly not rubbish it's just it's lost its appeal to me and that's why I didn't really ask her a great deal about it because the main She is the most supreme athlete she is you know. Probably the best prima ballerina of her generation Well yes she would have been and I remember when she started because I'm so much older than her it was a real shock to see someone as tall she had the most beautiful arms and my friend that I could often go and see ballet with who was at the Royal Ballet. Just They're beautiful even better than Fontaine's and she told me off air that she started to read and anyone who listens to Jason rolls I'm He's an aunt said Boys well and I said to her there's a reporter here you present to Jason Rosen he's got the best turnout he's got the most beautiful feet Jason I'm always making him show me his feet. But no so you know our would hardly turn it down they would never have me no one would know who our walls for a star but it's not you know and I would imagine Strictly is quite the rest of your life you have to put on hold from what I gather not that you know I could still do this show I would be completely exhausted Why am I even talking like this anyway Nicky Nicholls the wonderful author says talking about winter and we were talking about the changes I'd also love to know if you have a study ballet male female if you studied ballet What grade did you get up to I got up to elementary that was it Nicky Nicholls says Joe if you don't like the candle of your dog you will never see the light of your soul eat drink be merry be very merry if you like and thank God for a home sweet home you should know we take homes for granted only to have a home. Mark says Joe are you really the best judge of what to watch considering what you watch do you know what I watch more. He. I am a huge Netflix fan but I think most people aren't Navy like movies and documentaries This is from Margaret I remember seeing the wonderful Darcey Bussell and her last ballet performance on television what a wonderful dancer it was magical I'm going to see ballet roam their own bed to at Sadler's Wells on the 8th of November I didn't know until I was down on the South Bank for the Isabella Rossellini show that headquarters are on the South Bank I had no idea they used benches I wrote anyway Part 2 Time now for the news with Tanya. Radio London more for me just before 3 B.B.C. Radio Hi I'm Tony Blackburn with the news of London's biggest Avenger. The P.C. J. C radio lots. Of things we're talking about we're talking about change of season we're talking about dossier Basile of you have joined us we've missed a fantastic interview with Dossie. Took a video of dossier an idea about will sort of good to be a that which is going up on all social network I'll let you know when it's. All so we are all talking about change of seasons and the fat my yoga teacher this morning said you know don't behave in the winter the way you do in the summer you need to change what you eat change what you weigh all of this may change how your timetable is run you will not be out late at night you shouldn't be out but in the candle both ends but you can certainly do so in the summer because you have a spring stamp here you want to talk to me about any of that it's 871-280-7312 extension 000 let's go to Patrick is on the line how to Patrick hearts are our very well did you enjoy that interview with Paul one of the for sure the warm the full power of God or source it's on the public on the far as your approach on Syria the more obvious Superfund. So Kim might. Still Be there are still going to come and go on pursuing a woman can open a points to why she did credible and stand up to it well what I have to go I love that you love the ballet do you may remember what you saw Darcy dancing was she in Swan Lake was she in her sleeping beauty What was she dancing in asked me so much because of some art also for her birthday 1 October right for our sinful one like at Sadler's Wells. The whole small there's a sense of sadness but cautions a concordance close up of everyone and you know what I loved about Darcy was she was talking about the democracy of being a ballet dancer is that ballet dancers are not allowed to become story and divas just I mean they they rely on everyone in that company being as good as they are and never greater example in Swan Lake although cygnets have to dance in exactly the same way they're not allowed to be better or worse than each other. Sometimes for. Example I know I saw that production with Big George that was amazing was a German one the 1st one yes the very 1st one well it's. Serious. Patches lovely to talk to you thank you so much for calling in so I'd love to know if you've seen a dance but also have you studied Barrett ballet yourself Frank says Joe That was a great interview with Dossie Bussell she's so down to earth and nothing short of inspirational I did ballet on my feet can still do this so he sent me a picture gosh wonderful arch see. I tell you what I never had a good on my turn outs not bad but what are these rubbish but if you look at her feet they're just and the way she walked in there just the strength in her face hands do what I mean Casey says What a wonderful interview with Dusty bustle can't wait to get my hands on her book I studied ballet up to. Grade 7 which I went off to which I stopped when I went off to uni I will always regret it for not having achieved my Grade 8 I now do adult tap classes every week which is just fun and uplifting myself and another friend from the class are going to take top exams next year which will be a hoot as we're both in our thirty's but we love the feeling of having something to work towards I agree wholeheartedly with Darcy that daunts keeps you feeling young also loved hearing what your yoga teacher told you this morning about the change in season it's very interesting I really do believe in it and I think a lot of you believe in it and what she was saying also what Darcey Bussell was talking about is that she's now working on school curriculum trying to get ballet and dance on to national curriculums which you know I've been trying to do with yoga is just you know stop list constant academia let the kids daunce that's what I say let's go to pool his it beckons failed Hello poll. Thank you talking about the change of season do you feel a difference oh much very much and so. Some of it doesn't seem. Right. Just turn and so. Do well but it also seems weird that people don't see some I just think is a living creature we are meant to thrive in the sunshine but you don't want I don't I don't I I've become sluggish online and don't sleep alone to come right sorry I don't like going to all. And winter I just adore so you love living in this country then obviously because I keep thinking I need to go away in the winter because it brings me down but you love it I love it I'm militants 10 years after being tortured I was net it was torture it was torture. But now I love it I love. The sense of the smells and winds I love the colors of winter and wind not just outside this I don't know I don't know anything about astrology at all but when were you born service or science February's So you are an Aquarian I'm a choir and. Wonder if that's module of the poor in January I was a winter baby but I'm not a winter person how interesting thank you Paul he's the opposite to me he loves the winter he has more energy in the winter. And but he does prove that we do change with the seasons and so we should this is from hell and I totally agree with you we should all go into semi hibernation in the winter that's what's meant to happen if possible I would get into that box like the Blue Peter tortoise for a nap wait me up in March with the slice a cucumber. And some warm water just in time for spring. By the hour when to Joe I feeling cumbered by the cold dark and winter clothes even Christmas does not cheer me up actually all the consumerism excess and nonsense depresses me even more however it was a glorious summer so I feel less cheated this year Darcey Bussell is fantastic My current favorite ballerina is Marilyn Nunez a great dancer and an actress she interprets the ballet with great expression if you would like to see Darcey Bussell and teach me how to do. In the studio now is it on Twitter. Now let's look at it together. Oh my goodness sorry this is such a great clip thank you break for filming it Telsey Basile teaching me to do about. A It's up on Facebook B.B.C. Radio London all of you follow me on Facebook Joe good middle aged minx you will see Darcy teaching me oh my goodness you know. Myself why isn't moving the secret of doing that pose is to keep the thought I absolutely still as you do about moral and she look at her she's amazing but I'm not doing badly on height right do have a look B.B.C. Radio London Facebook or indeed all my own Facebook page Joe good middle aged minx thank you prate the film that is fantastic has made my day. Hey I've had such a good day today I was ill last assault yesterday I feel fantastic today this is all let's go to the phones Eddie is on the line Hello Eddie Hi Joe Now we're talking about seasonal change do you feel completely different at the moment yeah soon as the clocks go bank. The dong is. Like I used to suffer with sad years ago yes. Don't get me now but the cold I'm just coming up to 72. Like they say cold kills and lay say also don't go out if it's 5 degrees and lower. Because it can just affect the body so much. Sorry once once January gets here all clear off to South Africa for 3 months. We've got a plan B. The rest of us have to sit it out Eddie I know I know I GOING ON lost my wife last year and so sorry so and so Christmas holds nothing for me no and and again I've got lots of friends in South Africa and I don't blame you I absolutely know I think you're doing absolutely the right thing Eddie get away get some vision Mindy and then you come back in the spring is that what you plan on doing exactly I'll be back 27th of March but again while I'm out there I'm much more fit because we'll play tennis we're beyond the bell my daughter when she said What do you want to last January and my diary is just so for with everything going on and it's just like being here in the summer Yeah exactly so you could never experience a winter that's how I plan on spending my life when the B.B.C. Spit me out a live in a hoss hope for quite happily live in a hot somewhere warm so that I never see a grey sky because as I say if you heard me yesterday I was a completely different person to how I. Today I've just felt completely lacking in any energy or humanity my team and nodding Eddie thank you and this is from so if you just tuned in we're Darcey Bussell the one who was our guest this afternoon which is talking about her grace and elegance and I love the fact if anyone has studied ballet of anyone who's trying to dance you will realize the discipline will take you through life and she was saying she's never late she never takes anything for granted she knows she has to work for everything she's got this is the this is how ballet dances think and it is a very democratic career even though she was a prima ballerina with the number one dressing room you can bet your bottom dollar she would eat with the quarter she would rehearse with a quarter ballet she would do her class with she's just one of the parts of a ballet that's what I love about dances which isn't always the case with actors but that's a whole different discussion this is from Margaret Jo that was a great interview with the bustle fab video on the B.B.C. Radio London Facebook page of you and her. Once a dancer always a dancer I don't know about that yes Jo I did ballet when I was young we had classes at the school that I went to and because I loved it so much I had extra classes I look I took several exams and have looked for my certificates but I can't find them anywhere so did you do all radio Szigeti I wonder. Went up to grade 5 I think and then it was pretty elementary then elementary I think she says I can't remember much of the detail but I recall the victor Silvester school of don'ts they were involved in it really in ballet I was petrified in the dance exams and one of the remarks made of my performance was that Margaret must smile more a comment that is still made of me today Joe I would love to take classes again we should do you remember Mrs and who listens to this show. Has a 630 close at the Pineapple Dance Studios every Monday and I used to go until I stopped and I feel bad about it. I loved it I loved it my favorite bit was the walking on diagonal with a in the middle. I just loved it it's just I think it is the discipline and it's also being told off as an adult misses and said you can't do that until you then go to to. As you are when to pass in which a lot of people have been saying the other thing you know when I was a child only I have a sore a pumpkin other than in a pantomime in this whole pumpkin thing has to come over from America Halloween does did not feature no one carved pumpkins will stop pumpkins on doorsteps truly. Pumpkin Soup I don't think about every you know it was just it was the plot of Cinderella that was it is is. Fairly near Unless of course you'll. Under the age of 20 This is from pool who says Joe can you wish our best wishes to all of us on the old lags to pull of Crystal Palace he's just come out of a major operation from all of us to you Paul is well I'm glad it went well I really am and I hope you all recuperating in the warm and getting lots of love and attention Debbie says Joe I was talking about moving to France I may possibly go with my sister because it's so much warmer there she property to move to as previously mentioned there are some cheaper properties in the south of France it's possible to sell what you have right and have a bit left over if you moved at all I'm saying Debbie's be cautious because your friends are here and I don't know how old you are but to go and move to another country you know even if you're working over there then you'll have a whole social life surround your work hopefully if you're not working you'll have to start from scratch that's all I'm saying Richard says I'd love to see you on straight it's never going to happen I bet the reason you don't want to anymore is because of one of the presentence. I'm saying nothing it's been a good series he says My favorite professional got voted off last week it seriously was a massive part of my winter and often I as I tell you I stay with my mom quite often on a Saturday night in the province's and I will often take the dog for a walk and I go past a typical terrorist street of terraced houses and their window curtains are open and I can guarantee 99 percent of the homes are watching Strictly Actually I haven't been doing that this year so I don't know if they all assume it's as popular as ever this is from a share in west London Joe I share your deep in mood as the sky turns grey for today's sacred reminders would you please play your friendship NATO CONUS vampire with the brilliant Scratch Perry George would you blood finding this Junaid O'Connor's vampire I have all if you can't find it can we find church her version of MS Judge thank you. For Colored life hasn't she in every single sense and she is such a lovely person and I really genuinely made that because when she came in here she was just so warm and affectionate and lovely and talented and and you know I hope she's OK this is from Terry the fireman Joe how do I get to view you and Darcey Bussell every man's dream says Terry isn't we're not done so we're doing one daunce move we're doing about will still good to be a in the studio go to B.B.C. Radio London Facebook and you'll see B.B.C. Radio London Facebook or if you follow me Joe good middle aged minx on Facebook it is up there this is from Russell Joe I remember 40 years ago hollowing out Swedes you're right we didn't have pumpkins we had Swedes Well that would have taken long would it sweet I'm telling you pumpkins never we never are the reason I'm talking about this is there was a news item flashed up on the screen and I can only read the subtitles subtitles were at the text and it just said this country grows I don't know how many thousands of pumpkins not just what. And people going pumpkin picking No one did that any more than they went in picked Christmas trees this is all an American thing we bought our Christmas trees from and from a fruit and vege or artificial from all this. On sounding so all the time never mind now I'm so excited she's already caused a few ripples Allie Keenan the presenter the broadcaster animate I was at her wedding the 1st time I'd ever been to Monkey Island she has a book out that is literally giving super her Perkins who was on last week giving her book a run for money she has a book out called A New Kind of normal which when you know the subject matter is just the most inspirational title it's inspired because. Life had to become normal in a very abnormal way. She was diagnosed with cancer in 2011 just after I 1st met her actually and she's written about this it is one of the most readable books are truly mean that even though I am only up to chapter 5 it is.
