B.b.c. Radio Lincolnshire. Good morning yes it is a chilly one to start things off today isn't it I talk about being chilly how cold is your fridge I would like to know that have you got a thermometer in your fridge because if we were to have these like dials it go like from one to 6 but how cold is that to talk about on the program today the only pondering that is Leo's fumble in my home. a. Leo Sayer starting us off today at b.b.c. Radio Lincolnshire Melvyn in the morning with you through until 12 o'clock today I'm being a bit nosy I want to know what you keep in your fridge today we're talking generally about food wastage Scott mentioned this on the break for show this morning but did you realise that if you fridge isn't cold enough you're wasting a lot of food they reckon don't they they say generally store certain foods below 5 degrees now this surprised me when I 1st got a fridge thermometer how warm our fridge was because apparently many fridges are running at 7 or even 9 degrees the recommended is below 5 to protect some of the food did you know apples and oranges keep 14 days longer in free but while the other hand you can look at Bread bread goes stale 6 times faster in the fridge now what have you found that works for you and what doesn't work for you keeping it in the fridge let me have this morning. With. Wide. At the top and you. Can go. To. Cold. In the. Things you talk about on the show today how cold is your fridge it's a bit like what's in your lunch box which I used to do years ago and I'm not going to do that we talk about your fridge we're talking about rail services as well at some point and the government looking at the future of rail services with the possibility that some of the beaching cuts could be reversed would talk about mental bit later on in the show as well and also autism touching on that after 10 o'clock this morning somebody just said is that your fridge that you've tweeted a picture of this morning no it's not my fridge my fridge doesn't look anywhere near as tidy as that I tell you what to do when I get home the softer news I will take a photograph of my fridge I won't tidy up 1st I would take a random photo when I get home I promise you I will open the fridge door and I will photograph what we see when I 1st open the fridge door it will look at absolute state everything would be on the wrong places I would like to know what you keep in your fridge whether you found certain things are better for being kept in the fridge or certain things go off according to this report that I was reading this morning and things to keep in the fridge and I've heard other people say don't do this but eggs they say keep better in the fridge or pieces store those in the pantry didn't they. Oranges and apples last 14 days longer I've noticed carrots a better in the fridge personally if you don't put them in the fridge or bit soft you bendy bendy carrots tomatoes good in the fridge but I think personally take them out a little while before you want to eat them otherwise you don't get the flavor of a tomato and mushrooms you can keep in the fridge but apparently in a paper bag otherwise they sweat a lot you don't want sweaty mushrooms do you just don't want that things not to keep in the fridge bread because it goes stale 6 times faster if you keep in the fridge. But they're a big no no it should keep anything near but non-issue because they're actually sort of going downhill right from when you buy them on the potatoes they say don't keep in the fridge although I've got a friend who says he keeps his in the fridge because he's got off because he's coupled to too warm you don't want companies with the potato state and apparently don't keep in the fridge because they go so good what about you then 015-225-1121 extension 9 is the number to call I've had some some messages coming through already on this with regards to what you keep in the fridge just got a quick flick on here and see if I can read a couple of them for you just quickly to get them up on my my screen which is on a bit of a go slow moments but this is come out from Erica saying how do I know how cold the fridge is I probably don't I keep insulin Brussels broccoli milk butter eggs cheese milk whole milk twice and various sources in the fridge not very exciting so all this some things that you will keep in the fridge and some things that you won't let me know this morning. Amy Winehouse a lot of reaction to my album of the Week this week another track coming up just after half past 10 we're featuring seal and the album is called standards this is taking us back to the the Rat Pack Here are some fantastic tracks another one for you just after half past 10 this morning that we talk about food things that you keep in the fridge food waste do you find some of the food that you buy now do you think it goes off quicker than it used to do you find that do you notice that Betty called in says You just celebrated her 80th birthday and overwhelmed with cards and presents I thought this was to do with food also earlier in the year she celebrated her 60th wedding anniversary with Ted What a year it's been thanks for all the kindness and good wishes are nothing to do with riches but we. Betty. Congratulations just celebrated your 80th birthday and thanks to all the cards and all the presents fridge is what we're talking about on the program at the moment how cold is your fridge Do you know how cold your fridge is now it's going back a few years now and I think a bought a couple of for a moment has one that would go in the freezer one that would sit in the fridge and I'm going to go out and buy one this afternoon as well because it is interesting to know how cold it is you assume it's very cold and you are the same with the freezer . You know they've all got the controls on having a one to 6 and I think what they're going to try and do next year is bring in a legislation where somehow or rather you'll actually get a practical reading of how cold your fridge is I know some of the more expensive the fancy ones I think they're probably got a reading on the outside of the fridge from me telling you how how cool it is at the moment mine isn't mine's fairly bog standard. So I will go out this afternoon I will get a thermometer to put in the fridge because they're saying you ought to be storing certain food in the fridge below 5 degrees Celsius many fridge is running at 7 or even degrees in the fridge and no wonder some of the food is going off quickly and it's all tied in with how much food we waste 015-225-1121 extension 913 things you always keep in the fridge certain things you would never store in the fridge let me know this morning you can call us on b.b.c. Children. Out of the. People I want to see. 23 minutes to the. To save one life it's one. Nation. I. Don't want. To set 15 to. One double one. With. Ok because tax emails coming into the show we're talking about how cold your fridge is and what you actually keep in your fridge because the experts are saying certain foods need storing below 5 degrees I certainly heard 4 degrees and that's what I've often worked on but then I haven't got a thermometer in my fridge anymore so I'm going to clear how cold it is some fridges seem to be running at about 7 or even 9 degrees Michael trained as a butcher so he got a bit of an insight into this one Michael morning though a low lovin. Fact to do and supports are like years ago but the thing is still to do with food storage This is something I actually picked up from a kitten. And of course through the life disappointed to lose basics at all to do with food it's important to use it in its rotation as of course reported problems sort of storing stuff in there is too so to do with fruits and vegetables there is not a lot of things that can be stored in the fridge under freezers thoughts it's simple it's in the fridge just to take it out of its plastic bags and all its all the situation and it separate everything I actually mentioned about $10.00 Well it's the same as anything at all take it out a wrap it's in paper or something to people want to keep all kinds of clothing rugs makes of the crane sell them up and wrap up everything in the fridge early and keep up the possible the fridge is and then. Take them out then. Of course use them hang on a minute so you're saying wrap wrap individual items in your fridge an enclosure thing. Yes either paper or clothe a country one idea I actually keep old Oh sure it's Ok show the list there's all types of stuff it's always important to. Use and. They have these who rugs as a call them actually go into the laundry. And I always keep plenty clean clothes to run everything individual and then he cannot possibly of the fridge which cause you're no longer got one or 2 coke can with draws. What do you what do you use your socks for as well yes there's something else. There's actually people lose a sock all the throats of the way well these things are ideal. It does decide to sell them a pension to actually live some is how now I often go out and buy Paul's complicated things like this they're all different stuff and both which is cheap to buy temple the important thing is to take these and I have to put them in the 1st one in the in the so it's important to make sure these things are actually driving a check of the bags and that you put in not pulling your sock took to keep an apple you keep an apple in a sock in fact. Part 23 of pens are big the sucker is and then you keep them in the fridge to him yes but the thing is is to separate them to doing the 1st one actually tire not another but the next one and and then the sock around and then I've never heard of that before Michael do you do that let me know I've never heard of that before Michael keeps apples in a salt. Separates them by tongue and not between the salt and then puts them in the fridge. And put it in the. I've never heard of that before people storing apples in salts and keeping them in the fridge. Storing the allotments in instead of socks or stockings those sorts of things and hanging them up in the greenhouse It was just easier than tying them together that work quite well I've never heard of people actually putting socks or other items of clothing to protect food in the fridge do you do that I don't know a comment in sleep that says years ago. We did several courses on food storage and food hygiene we were told the ideal temperature for your fridge was no higher than plus 2 degrees. Very cold. The experts are saying there are certain items of food that you would keep below 5 degrees Celsius I'd certainly thought 4 was was the good temperature for your fridge but apparently some fridges are running at about 7 or even 9 degrees which is quite warm for keeping things in the fridge which means you're wasting a lot of food that's the issue of this they say if oranges and apples are kept in the fridge they will last up to 14 days longer. And tomatoes Yes Ok to keep tomatoes in the fridge I would recommend take them out a little bit before you going to use them mushrooms you can keep in the fridge but you need to keep those in a paper bag for the gods of things not to put in the fridge not been on has not potatoes or onions and apparently bread goes stale 6 times faster in the fridge your experience 015-225-1121 extension 9 going to couple a song some call it hits and headlines here in a moment I just want to quickly remind you some travel problems a 52 closed hogs thought this is in both directions serious accident there involving 2 vehicles between Skegness road chapels at Leonard's and the bay 1449 Long Lane. The road close you travel through Hawkes saw being closed services to deal with that incident that happened at around about 10 past 8 this morning we'll keep you up to date with any developments here on b.b.c. Radio link and share right to songs from columns hits and headlines yeah I will tell you the year after the song. And we start with this one from Tommy Roe. What was the you. And I want you. To give. Me a. Good. Make you want you to make. Ah. 2 from callers hits and headlines here today Tommy row with Dizzy and then the Who with Pinball Wizard What was the year then who said 969969 is the hits and headlines year this afternoon for Carla after 12 o'clock what were you doing in 69 let me know I like Carla no particular you can send an e-mail Karla b.b.c. Dot co dot u.k. 1969 looking for your memories after 12 o'clock today and also were chatting with Chris Short from the folk group the church fitters will be on the program this afternoon with Carla from 12 key because Texan e-mails coming in you're actually sending in photographs now of your fridges following my tweet this morning of a random fridge that I found somewhere on the internet I have promised I would send a picture or tweet a picture of my fridge when I got home the softer noon Adrian sent in a picture saying that you want to know or see my fridge Here's a picture of mine it's the evolution by Hope point thank you for that I was wondering which one it was I couldn't quite tell from the angle of the 1st the graph. But thank you for that keep him coming into the show 152-251-1219 we're talking about what you keep in the fridge and what you don't keep in the fridge there's a serious side to this because we're talking about food wastage and will return to this a little bit later on in the program as well but apparently and this surprised me because sometimes I do keep bread in the fridge bread goes stale 6 times faster in the fridge and then the other extreme and I never keep oranges or apples in the fridge they'll last 14 days longer apparently if you keep them in the fridge apparently the food shelf life is reduced by a day for every degree above the recommended temperature. So they're recommending the fridge at about 5 degrees 40 degrees if you've got a thermometer on your fridge or in your fridge let me know roughly what your fridge works out let me know 152-251-1219 is that a. Bit about the railways. Champagne. Is a plate. That's one of the musical because it was in told me if. You can see the full list of 100 musical. To pick from you pick your favorite 3. If you can get online pop into our reception here at b.b.c. Radio link if you've got the full list on reception. What's comments coming in on what you keep in your fridge and what you don't Bob in East taking to got in touch bases don't taters and tomatoes need to be kept in a dark place when they do well they'd be dark in the fridge when I was alive and he comes on when you're in the door but then the other problem with that is the theory of the problem with his that if you keep them in a cupboard and I've had this happen as well because some of our cupboards are quite warm they start to sprout turnover start to grow again and when that Clive and Janet have been in touch with Northcoast they say never put bread in the fridge but for many years we've stored bread in the freezer only works with sliced say Clive and Janet peel the slices off as you need them how do you stop it going soggy though because I've had issues with that my wife went on a bread making course once and she came back she was told that she can put like a full nonce life sliced loaf in but when you take it out you defrost it only part defrost it and then put it in the oven and it comes out like a lovely fresh loaf of bread. Again tips galore on this program today and I'm going to change direction thanks for all of the calls on food and food wastage keep those coming in returning to that a bit later on but another stories making headlines this morning rail lines closed in the tourist Beeching cuts in the sixty's could be reopened the transport secretary has announced Chris Grayling has said he wants to open up routes which would encourage house building ease overcrowding and boost the economy now thousands of stations and hundreds of local rail lines were closed down between one 196-4971 the recommendation of the then British Railways chairman Dr Richard Beeching So which lines could reopen in Lincolnshire and would it be feasible and practical a point I've been putting to b.b.c. Radio linkage Alan Stennett has written about the county's rail network well visible impact law is a big question because a lot of those lines things houses businesses all kinds of things have been built across the line and that makes it very difficult to reopen the line but assuming you could magical ways some of those obstacles I suppose streamlines an account we'd like to see Bakken one is good for passengers we want is good for goods and what is good for everybody doesn't actually use training in a sense but you know you have to look at all of those 3 options so let's look at the 1st one then good for passengers good for passengers would be what they call the east Lincolnshire away runs from Grimsby down to Boston pass through Laos and also on the way so it's serving at least 2 large communities in the county provide you with a very quick service down to heading towards London and of course it gives the advantage that you take that eastern side of the county and gives a much easier access to a railway line so I think if you take out one for the passenger benefit then he want to pick up that one and that would be really very convenient for a lot of Lincolnshire what about for goods. For God's sake you don't leave the line between Spalding and March it was only lifted and 980 wasn't really a peach inker but it would mean the goods trains from London to the no could come straight through without having to wander of East Coast Main Line at Peterborough and then come back into Lincolnshire so you're the only nice down there not very long ago again there's a bit of a road on part of it there's no housing on 2 parts so you know reinstating that one or just reestablishing the link perhaps by a different route could be very very nice and was your 3rd option then for people that don't use the railways or is probably by far the least practical unfortunately the thing will be really fantastic and it's a Lincoln in particular was a good put back the Lincoln avoiding line it came off the remain rather line just north of Lincoln ran around the north of the city on embankment bridges there were no level crossings anywhere so all these goods train hold up as a level crossing in the traffic in the center of Lincoln would simply go around and not hold anybody up but say fortunately there are all the bridges have gone the embankment of gone and everything else so sadly you couldn't really put that one back I'm afraid that would be just a little bit beyond wishful thinking so it's a people know you live in an old station could your line reopen would that be practical. I'm not sure about practical I suppose it would be actually because most of the track bed is still there and it would still work. Very many people very well it would obviously would all spar with Barney the always be a slow line because it followed the winding river bank all the way down through back up the very happy about it I don't think so would be quite spurious consider. Your outrage there through the back garden state it is not quite like to see and of course the 1st option we were talking about with regards to passengers coming down from Grimsby that would cost an absolute fortune to put a line in there wouldn't. Oh it would cost a fortune to put any of these lines back you know obviously have to have a major public benefit I would like to see that said that line would give public benefit yes that the cost would be say particularly in view of the point I raised being that you have to demolish housing is and businesses that cross the line now you know far more sensible option at this point would be to say right let's build a railway line and they sound daft when there is the formation there but if you wanted to do it you'd probably need to bypass a couple of the towns which stupidly of course would remove some of the benefits so in terms of practicability not very sure but it really would be very nice for the county b.b.c. Radio linkages Alan Stan is written books about the counties railways I'm not quite sure how any of the old you know lines it would be feasible or practical to bring back into use again but if you if you could have a magic wand which would lines would you reinstate and how would you make them practical b.b.c. Radio Lincolnshire travel. Or the main problem we've got to the moment is the a 52 in both directions chapel since land it's close to Skegness and in your mouse that's closed due to serious accident involving 2 vehicles between Skegness road in Chappell's and it's on the b. David Essex told me club's not my place to talk about railway how practical and feasible it would be to bring back some of the old big chain lines Raja's impinged bank Raji you remember the line in your area that you yeah yeah the vibe I love. Was axed in the basement because when a bit more thought than I But anyway back to the law. And the. Over a number of years that line was direct for the price of the line that Derek and then he decided to build the ice state on its cars from. The record. On that they serve pace from Austin through pay to our right and like Alan was saying you know things have been built on on the old railway so to reinstate them it would it would create a huge amount of work wouldn't it just say well I've been talking to the point was . The other line is adjacent to this now and from a conservative paper it could have to start with trying it could pick up more passengers than it does keep paying off the upper wrote and directed more convenient to go to pay divert or turnover confront them to pick up the mine line yes some of these lines do have what they call them request stops to name yeah this guy and I the technology you can sort of press a button. For the drama to start your stock in the probably be early to pay through and don't get on but. It will be very on days Yeah Roger thank you for that good suggestion Bryan in Boston's also been in touch with regards to Ralph services Brian says worked on the railways for 40 years and says if you put car parks into isolated stations for example places like swine's head habits bridge for instance I think that would solve the problem this is being done along the pen and wrote some works very well so I assume similar Brian to what Roger was just suggesting there some sort of request stop and I was actually watching a programme on television the other night when somebody was travelling around the Highlands of Scotland I think it was and that was a request ops you know you you got up you put your hand out when the train was coming along with that work in Lincolnshire it would work for existing lines wouldn't it possibly how you make sure you keep the trains. To time I'm really not quite sure how that works but what about the the practicality and the feasibility of reinstating some of the. Comments coming through how you were store things in your fridge and the sort of things you keep in your fridge as well I've never kept apples or oranges in the fridge. 14 days long. That would avoid food waste. Should like to pass on let me know.
