With up all night tonight hold on to the bad posts because the election result may be coming in the Brecon and. By election in the next 10 minutes we're going to hopefully bring it to you live so you wait but now more importantly perhaps time for some North American support to join come Walker and 1st James would have us thrown our plans completely up in the air as well it's fine Helen a Kerry a we were at war I was expecting in about an hour and a half so was I but there we go the thought of live radio isn't right what we did for Hello. There these byelection that always get your doing the result. Yeah you're OK We're going to cross to you to cover a foreign correspondent be quickly Google's byelection and. You know every week when Jones not on I like to give him a different title brigadier was one where you know yes you not notice you mean you were listening out enough political correspondent one of my holidays Yeah political correspondents the new one out there so I. Work anyway should tell you a bit about what's coming up an intern ites program although I have to say Joe on has written the news tonight which is good mostly exit what he hasn't done is included the result of the Pocono trucks $200.00 which are currently got on the television NASCAR. Honestly I don't get it. No No And that's why it's not in the news showed how well let's start with this we're going to be talking lots of Major League Baseball Tonight as the trade deadline passed yesterday we're going to hearing from writers in New York and Toronto but it was the Houston Astros who pulled off the biggest blockbuster deal of the year they landed the best starting pitcher who was traded Zack Greinke or from the Arizona Diamondbacks now in a week where articles were written about how fighting in the National Hockey League is an all time low not so much in baseball as you see on his Reds make this no the greatest video going there is amazing right it goes in the Mind you the video in the course of Joe on reading this the Cincinnati Reds and the Pittsburgh Pirates got into a bench clearing brawl on cheating I and. The way it was started is the unusual bit of this because the red pitcher Amir Garrett had words with the pirates benched during a mound visit and then he just decided to take matters into his own hands and run at the bench and trying to fight everyone yes that's right everybody and there are quite a lot players in baseball teams the video as James bench is still doing the rounds but it takes some pretty impressive baseballs to do that doesn't it to take on a whole entire team on your own I am pleased to say his teammate did join him in his venture it is extraordinary to watch this left talk to us about it's really really the so it's a war to we're watching the video and it keeps it keeps tottering Yeah so it looks like he's about to punch and then stops and then he goes again no it stopped again thank goodness for the B.B.C.'s. Service there you know that's why 5 hours dumb anyway in the N.H.L. The Minnesota Wild top brass decided it was time to move on from the general manager Paul Fenton after just over a year in charge he'd inherited retain their made the playoffs in 6 straight seasons and played at a $98.00 point timeframe now the wild were. Of the oldest teams in the league with very little in the way of elite talent and they have been ousted in the opening round in 3 straight seasons going 15 to 29 in the playoffs over those 6 years despite some reasonable drafting and the free agent signings of matzo Corella the vision definitely wasn't clear enough in Minnesota change very much needed. One more N.H.L. Bit of news to tell you about the New York Rangers defenseman Kevin shopping Kirk had the final 2 seasons of his 4 year contract bought out on Thursday the 30 year old signed with the Rangers as a free agent 2 seasons ago getting a contract worth 6650000 each year he had 23 points and 28 points respectively in those seasons with New York after scoring at least 40 points in 4 consecutive seasons with the Blues and The Washington Capitals it was quite a surprise that he has now become a free agent and now the attention turns to where he's going to end up with many teams still looking to bolster their defense and not really expecting shuttle to be on the free agent market right now we should point out as well it is also believe it or not the 1st game of the N.F.L. Season tonight's story football I know I know football is back on the Hall of Fame game in between Denver Broncos America the falcons which I assume is going to say usually usually they make a bit more a big deal of the season started I was going to I would assume this is like the Community Shield in football this is just you know they everyone turns up and they have a nice little chat to each other and you know you hear you're going clock just go back to football to such a thoughtful yeah you're in club said it's a friendly isn't it. Yes you're going to maybe not a vast Kevin Keegan Billy Bremner exactly you're very get right anyway if we can and while we're still waiting for the result from the Royal Well showground as a see Ed Davey going into the background there the former leadership contender for the Liberal Democrats one of the very large he's not on a very large show the lovely hat let's move on and do this. But down the hall is the man in. The scooter you know Simpson's Tunes now gone. Anyway the M L B trade deadline has finally passed and the big trade of the last week was arguably or something one of the trades was arguably that of Marcus Stroman he has gone to the New York Mets from the Toronto Blue Jays and we're going to hear about the Mets in a few minutes time hopefully after we get the results here in. Brecon a rotten a show but 1st let's let's move on shall we talk about the Toronto Blue Jays take it away Joe. Well yeah it's been an interesting time for the Toronto Blue Jays recently and here to make far more sense of it is understated who covers the Toronto Blue Jays for the athletic at the wrong turn does bought birds all day podcasters Well Andrew thank you very much for joining us thank you so much for having me. So you can you try and help me with this. On the athletic and I'm a little bit more clearer now about it but But what is the plan in Toronto because it doesn't take much looking online to find a lot of very unhappy Jags fans at the moment you have you're absolutely right the villagers fans are not happy bunch right now because the team is in the middle of a rebuild they were very good you know 20152016. New management has come in and sort of piece by piece has dismantled the team and is trying to build a new thing build a new culture build a new team with younger players cheaper players and we're sort of in the middle of that process now it looks like they kind of know what they're doing a but but there's a lot of reticence among the fans that the right people who are maybe not in charge and so it's it's a toxic time to be a fan of the Blue Jays in terms of speaking about them online because everybody's got an opinion and they're all pretty angry it seems bad this year and they're going to be bad next year as well and that's a tough thing for fans isn't it because you know everybody understands that teams go in cycles of being good and then they tend to particularly in caps world and draft Well they they tend to then go away for a couple years but some of the some of the think is the economy from the Blue Jays management. That the blues is going to be bought for quite a long time and this rebuild is something that's going to take a very long time to come into place which is tough the farms who want to go and support that club this weekend Bill tonight even if it's true and Stroman was a pitcher who had said publicly that he wanted to stay in Toronto and management did not care they felt that they would do better by trading him and getting some younger assets back some cheaper assets back but the problem that's going to be you know 1st and foremost for the Jays in the coming years is finding guys to pitch for them and they trade away Stroman they traded away Aaron Sanchez another starting pitcher for them this this week. And so busy nobody really knows where the next Great Blue Jays pitcher is going to be off and looks good they have some really interesting prospects right now but without that with the pitching side they're they're in tough and so it's going to be a long process I think at least a couple years before they really find a championship caliber rotation if they ever able to do that at all. You said it you said about Stroman that you said about how he wanted to stay in Toronto and that means a lot to you to Toronto sports fans because often in the N.B.A. In the N.L. Bay that kind of the the lone team in Canada and often it's not always a desirable place to play you'll spoil so for actually a kind of a star player to come out and say that he wanted to remain in Toronto that probably means more to those drawn to fans and the fact he's then get traded probably hurts that little bit more. Smoothly and here you know here's a fun guy he's a personality he's charismatic but yeah last winter he got the skyline of Toronto tattooed on his chest. Nothing but I'm no great ambassador for the well yeah that's a bit of a mistake on his part of them but he's going to he's been a great ambassador for the city. You know he's been a guy you know he's sort of polarizing He's very outspoken. And you know some people kind of it rubs the wrong way but most fans brace him and really appreciate his work as an ambassador and as a representative of the Blue Jays and he's a great pitcher and so it was it was a bitter pill to swallow Let's try and kind of bring this to a close on a more positive because there is there is one kind of you know superstar in the making or even in the making I don't know. Genius who is playing for the Blue Jays at the moment and he's having a pretty good night tonight I mean I've been reading and tell us how exciting they supply it and how much the front charges is going to be shaped around bloody genius you know he's a guy who his dad is in the hall of fame and people think that he might be better than his dad so I mean that's as high praise as you can get for a kid who's only 20 years old right now baseball usually you know 2324 and he's a really young guy with a ton of talent who was here early in his life facing the best of the best and. It was rough going a little bit at the start but he started to come around and looked like the guy who everybody thinks is going to be a franchise cornerstone and you know winning batting titles and homerun titles and . You know the Blue Jays rebuild is frustrating but they have in a more enormous piece to build around there and that's you know the good news if you're trying to right now and drive good to us who are more question before we go into this byelection Brazil which we're expecting very shortly here on 5 life now Toronto's just recently the Raptors lost Leonard of course what was going wrong with Canadian spooled. The weather does channels. Overcall why he wanted to be close to home it gets a little colder here compared to Los Angeles so that's that's a problem guys don't like going over the border to you know it's a true servant you have to change your money and. That's a problem I think too but you know what the guys are going to just interpret a 2nd now because we've got this byelection that is going to be called in the 2nd the candidates are on the stage now and the returning officer is about returning officer at the election of a Member of Parliament for the Brecon and Ratna she can stitch it and see how old on the 1st of August 2019 through here by give notice that the number of votes recorded for each candidate at the said election is as follows. Really very David Lloyd Pete so either kindly to me and I ever thought we had a lot so now the old Ross Ethel likes. Most of it again how do you eat at a Kentucky ousts do reveal it again Dick now drinkin and be Bowden Eventually I got to not wait. And the door went to dig it out Val again Lynn Chris Davis Welsh Conservative Party M K C I want all company. Do you think that meal Petra had a count. In Thomas Linda or Davis. Now the returning officer is being asked to Thomas Davis Welsh labor there come bury him me ill. Why can't we stay Jane dogs. Welsh liberal Democrats Democrats here I fear for a tall Camry in dictionary mill we can't die they know where. We're going to send this until it goes into English so you can get a wider tire to me ill translation of economics are 3 day we'll hear you very quickly I'll be able to tell you very quickly what the result is when I see the smiles on people's faces make my well number I guess numbers on exactly really 142 die count draft pick a Thai. Lady Lilly the paying the official monster raving loon party $334.00. Was. All repeats that 33433 day week I fed. The total number of ballot papers rejected was 73 because I'm so much never a pair I played lace ya thought wait for it sized victory. And I do here by tick CLAIRE But Jane dogs is duly elected Member of Parliament for the said constituency was not tells you everything you need to know Jane dog Liberal Democrat leader of the Welsh liberal Democrats stood for election in Montgomery sure in 20152017 in this. Order of a day to go to stand against the sitting and pay Chris Davis knowing that Mr Davis was the M.P. That. He'd been found guilty of a charge of election of expenses fraud. And was then brought back in so. We're going to hear from Jane Dodds in a minute. And it is a very clear to morning here in Bracken and try to show. Oh it was 34 years ago last month Richard live sees victory in a by election here sparked a liberal revival across Wales and the United Kingdom and tonight as. We've done it's again. The the people of this constituency have once again chosen hope over fear. I am incredibly humbled by your supports from every walk of life and every political persuasion. People have chosen to believe in my positive liberal vision for something better. Than by saying that liberal vision people in Brecon Iraq the should have sent a powerful message to Westminster. We demands better. Welsh farmers and small business owners facing a new deal brags that demand better. Working Families. Working families relying on food banks to feed that children demand better. Young people who see politicians failing to tackle the climate emergency demand better the message to all of you from me and our new leads adjustments is that you can have best. Bets with the Liberal Democrats. This victory must be a turning points not just for our communities here in Brecon are rubbish but for the whole country too. People are desperately crying out for a different kind of politics there is no time for tribalism when our country is faced with the Boris Johnson governments and the threat of a no deal breaks rests so my very 1st act as your M.P. When I arrive in Westminster will be to find Mr Boris Johnson wherever he's hiding and tell him a loud and clear stop playing with the future of our communities and rule out a no deal breaks it now. Because. This is a time when people that share liberal values must work together which is why I want to thank the Green Party and pride community for their courageous decision to back me this time the trust and responsibility I now carry to represent every person and every community across Breckon Robuchon is immense it is an enormous privilege to follow in the footsteps of Richard live city and Roger Williams as the M.P. For the Saria it's the shining example set by them and by my friends Kirsty Williams That's how I look to us I take on this challenge I thank the police the returning officer and her staff for conducting such a smooth count the sea flowing. I thank my talented campaign team my agent James Willis. I thank Rosie Helen and cedar and literally thousands of campaigners who have come from every part of the country to supports me I'd also like to thank my husband Patrick and my sister and family for the supports and lastly I want to thank the people of bracken around the show. I look forward to working with every single one of you to give our rural areas back their voice in Westminster Let's get to work. And the other lady honestly. Giving her victory speech she has won the Brecon. By election that is a decision by the people of the Gives Boris Johnson a working majority in the House of Commons of just want after the Tories lost the seat that they had they had were at the last election now the results were given out in Welsh 1st in terms of the numbers so James just go through the numbers we've got them Yes So Jane Dodds 13826 votes the conservative which was as you said Chris Davis 12401 so that's a majority of 1425 if I've got my math correct Labor got 1680 now there was some question about whether or not they would keep their deposit if I understand it right that's 5 percent isn't so it's close I think I need to double check that breaks it Party $3631.00 Ukip 242 and the Monster Raving Loony Party 334 there is 73 rejected vote and as I pointed out and as you mentioned all of this means that essentially Boris Johnson now has a working majority of one in the House of Commons and what's interesting about the seat is that there was only one pro remain can do that and that was Dodd's because apply company and the Green Party had stood aside on the day that the election was moved and said that they would not put up candidates and they just wanted one candidate to try and maximize the vote the Liberal Democrats as well flooded the area with activists over the last few days the conservatives have been doing their own their own work and working on social media like crazy very interesting that the social media aspect that they've been putting out votes on Facebook has all. Being about Boris Johnson and non of them really mentioning Chris Davis the conservative candidate and well Nick if I can just bring you the swings which are always interesting in these as well liberal Democrats plus 14.3 conservatives minus $9.00 bricks it plus $10.00 Labor minus $12.00 so significantly for both That's not bad for both of those main parties a 9.6 percent drop of the conservatives 12 and a half percent drop for labor as well so both of those suffering not as close as they were trying to make out an hour or so ago when they were saying that the the papers were all exactly the same was Simon tore me is a professor of government and international relations at the University of Sydney you've just been listening to to those figures when you look at it was that was this the the big surprise that it's that it appears to me no I don't think so I think that the conservatives in particular will be fairly relaxed about this I don't think they were thinking they were going to win what they wanted to see is how many of those bricks it already votes could be attracted across the conservatives and how robust the Conservative Party vote overall would be as a result of the by election I think they'll be sitting there going that's not a nice well. Really why. Because what also happened is that if you don't if you toss out the progress it boasts a completely outweigh the bad of the remains vote and they've also seen both shift away from labor and labor didn't obviously didn't have a very strong presence in this constituency anyway but I just think they will be sitting there going you know there's a little bit of a correspondence there they've neutralized the bricks of party. Voters not imploded the thing obviously the larger context is down to a majority of one as you mentioned in the House of Commons and that's going to make life to live just that little bit more difficult as we move towards October the I mean it's a terrible phrase the Boris bounce. But I was I was a saying earlier in the last few days the Facebook ads that the Conservative Party have been buying have all been about Boris Johnson they have not been about Chris Davis the candidates now he was he was he was chosen again to stand for this seat was that enough of a reason do you think for him to lose that he had been party to this recall that you know the election was held because of what he'd done and what the people of the constituency had wanted Is that enough of a reason to see their vocal lapse because of that one no co-opted But why not by 9.6 percent you know I mean it isn't really clear I mean I think 9 percent it sounds quite dramatic sounds like a big loss but you've got to put it in the context of it this is all about Rex's this by election. As you noted we didn't have a lot of discussion about the various merits of the candidates themselves the Conservatives decided to go on the front foot with a new prime minister and continue turbocharge message as it were so they'll be looking at this and simply saying you know has although I love boat relatively speaking held up have we neutralized the breakfast party have we got a kind of positive message still going out there to the country about what Boris is going to do for the country and they're probably just say you know the. Write this one off they had a candidate who causes tainted by it make Spence's scandal so they didn't have a very strong candidate to begin with is it something they're going to be upset about I don't think so I think they'll be sitting there going that's OK those numbers look fine to them so let's look at it from a breakfast point of view and the remain polities are satisfied like and we didn't put her kind of up the Greens didn't put a counted up and they were pushing basically for anyone who was wanted to remain to vote Lib Dems is that the is that deal going to be done elsewhere Well I mean the interesting thing as well just to mention the turnout I mean 59.72 percent is a pretty big turnout for a byelection So it's not that far away from one on expect in the general election so this is quite a meaningful poll I think kind of good sense of where a chunk of people in middle sort of on that Welsh English border stand as far as Breck's it is concerned remain as will be of course delighted they won the seat but I think there will be just a few sort of pangs of anxiety there that they haven't pushed on with all the support in the Green Party like come or if you like all the people the remainders in the Labor Party swinging across it's not really a sort of resenting remain victory this so I do think that you know as I said I think the conservatives will regard this is as not a bad result I think the remainders will of course spin this is a very positive result they've got you know Jane Dodd's in the House of Parliament the majority is down to one I think you know it still looks very very tight between leaving remain on the kind of national scale that majority of just warm it's going to make things more difficult for the prime minister. Well I think we're basically in a kind of pre-election run up here I mean I think everything is about putting the whole emphasis on last Oct 31st seeing how far you can go with the European Union and with the other forces that need to get in the alignment in order for that day to work probably won't work so everything is really about plumping Boris's credentials it's about getting conservative Cabinet on a war footing as it were and basically preparing for on probably a vote of no confidence call in the House of Commons when they come back and failing that coming back with some sort of compromise or something or in around. Breck's it's sort of compromise deal to put to the Commons which probably won't get up and then we're into a sort of pre-election scenario come September October so this is all about positioning Boris getting on the front pages putting for that positive message trying to cancel out the anti yesterday message of Britain Gorgon on the one hand and the BRICS a party stick with us and you'll leave message on the other Mr Jones was one of the 5 problems at only 11 days as being the prime minister has lost a seat in the byelection faster than any prime minister since Asquith in $1000.00. I think whether it's you know of authority of one to 5 of all in the same spot mean the problem is as well as we know there's going to be a large number of. Ex Tory ministers and conservative remain is going to be a thorn in his side as he tries to push some legislation through the House of Commons So I think that the big thing is really to appeal about the HATES of their own party to the broader public trying to get that corresponds to I suppose order really positive message about how it is not going to be the disaster that the mainstream media is presenting and if you stick with Boris you'll also have an answer to those kind of hysterically issues as well Simon Tony thank you very much indeed Simon is a professor of government and international relations at the University of Sydney when slightly later news it's 235 in Richard's got the latest headlines from digital B.B.C. Sound Smart Speaker this is B.B.C. Radio 5 Live as you've been hearing the Liberal Democrats have just won the Brecon and Radnor byelection the new M.P. Is Jane Dog's the leader of the Lib Dems in Wales should be Chris Davis the Conservative Party candidate by 1425 votes it means Boris Johnson now has a working majority of just one M.P. On his return to Test cricket after the ball tampering scandal I kind of just got the shakes a little bit and although I guess has in the back of my neck sort of stirred up it's part of one of those moments where I worked really hard the last sort I had a months and yet to come back and my reprieve a few people wrong as well. I struggle against the same Ingles I was nice to in the 1st outing out here did they get through when the when it was really tough Will Smith magnificent 144 HELP decide recover from 128 to finish in a strong position on 284 roll outs England suffered an early set bond pleasing record Test wicket sake of James Anderson after 4 overs he's been trying to recover from a cough injury and is now waiting on scan results broad did a good job stepping in to take 5 wickets and says they're hoping for good news on this and we actually don't know the full extent as of yet it is a bit quiet he's just watched the bowlers and said sorry type thing that nothing for him to be sorry about so yeah he's a bit quiet and obviously a little bit frustrated but all we can hope is that the news is better than maybe we expect and you know he's going to do everything he can to get to get rights quickly as possible England will resume on 10 for no loss on dates who of the test to edge Boston here every bull on. Sound to use it radio and podcasts this is B.B.C. Radio 5 live over a little on the B.B.C. Sounds opening night mind so we're still going through the figures working out what's been happening at this byelection that's happened tonight the Brecon and Rob byelection in which it was a Conservative seat it's now being held by the leader of the Lib Dems in Wales Jane Dodds who won by just over a 1000 votes and this was really an election the the have an awful lot of. Little spins 1st of all it was whether the Conservatives could hold on they didn't whether the pro remain. Alliance as it were which was the Green Party not standing up like Comrie not standing and all those all their supporters being asked to vote for the Lib Dems Obviously that didn't work completely because some of them didn't vote for the Lib Dems and that that seems to have of been one of the stories as well this story that's developing in the story has developed over the results has been about the Labor Party and where the vote went there to the point that they almost lost their the deposit the deposit goes if they get less than 5 percent of the vote James is with me James were come up how did they do that they have kept their deposit 5.3 percent I think is what I saw the labor that Labor got 5 and is it 500 quid or 5000 quid by a good question. It's either 505-0023 said I think it's 500. But yeah I mean it is in that sense a quite extraordinary. Result I think for labor and I'm sure they'll be very worried indeed we're going to be talking to a political correspondent Jonathan Blake in just a few minutes who's actually at the Royal Welsh show ground joy just bring you the those figures again in case you missed them because you may well have been if you're well he's as bad as ours because they're all well they're right out in Welsh Jane Dodds has taken the seat for the Liberal Democrats 13826 votes to the conservatives Chris Davis who had been recalled He was the M.P. Until the petition to recall him 12401 that's a majority of 1425 and indeed a huge swing from the conservatives to the Liberal Democrats the breaks a party 3631. Labor 1680 you keep 242 and the Monster Raving Loony Party 334 I should say one more thing by the way. Very good person Lindsay Jones who's been waiting to talk to us about North American sports so should we do a little bit of that while waiting for Jonathan Lindsey do you know about Breckenridge Michelle as well I have no idea. Where that is so I think that's just talking about I thought I was just thinking the some of this must be some sort of weird foreign language in humanity very close but also when you imagine I'm sure that as you know it's never happened to you but getting getting interviewed about something you know absolutely nothing about fight that would be is one of my nightmares one of my nightmares as a standard. Though you wake up in the morning thinking that you're going to be interviewed about something that you know nothing about. Where you can alter you guys don't definitely don't say politics you know I don't know I think I've learned a lot I love it. Well thanks for doing this for reasons and now I'm just going to look at my colleagues behind the glass here and see whether they've got one of my favorite jingles for me all to talk about this well let's find out. I feel that broke it up a little bit naked it was a nice to have a nice movie where you from the local politics to a North American sport really the kind of thing we do on opponent. Has been another extraordinary week in the N.F.L. Despite it being the offseason this time down to disciplinary issues the league says it won't suspend the Kansas City Chiefs star wide receiver to wreak Hill after a domestic violence case involving his 3 year old son as we've mentioned the wonderful Lindsey Jones covers politics for Wales to know covers the N.F.L. For the athletic. Thanks for coming on and thanks for bearing with us remind us of the case if you wouldn't mind we have to this is a kind of a complicated case where Terry costar wide receiver from the can. City cheese. His son suffered a broken arm his 3 year old son earlier this year and so of course when a child suffers a broken bone like that. It was turned over to the police as well as child services and Family Services where both Tyreke and his fiance were both investigated and the police ended up not charging either one of them they couldn't determine what actually happened and how this child ended up with this broken arm the child and the case kind of stayed within that family services division so the N.F.L. Decided that they this is something that they would need to look to and into as well as under the scope of the N.F.L.'s personal conduct policy but ultimately what happened was that you know after meeting with the canoe commissioner and with the N.F.L. Not really being able to get a hold of a lot of the evidence because the case files are sealed and they have no subpoena power to get so get those sorts of things they decided that they didn't have any enough evidence to punish to recal under the personal conduct policy this if you're a Kansas City Chiefs fan this is fantastic news he's one of the best players in the N.F.L. He's such a key part of their often if you are the chief fan the it's fair to look at this very with a lot of skepticism because the personal conduct policy since it was rewritten 5 years ago in the race in the wake of the Ray Rice domestic violence kind of scandal it's been applied very inconsistently and there been players that have been punished far more severely for things that are probably maybe not as significant of incidents so it's you know I think that's the biggest issue right now is that there's no consistency of which players are punished and for which events and really it leads back to the question of whether the N.F.L. Should be in this kind of investigation business at all yeah I mean that is kind of what I was going to ask you about because of course of the my We've also got the ongoing case the criminal case against Robert Kraft the the Patriots I mean I don't want to told you about. The Syfy clay but I know that Roger Goodell has apparently suggested and he's the commissioner of the N.F.L. Suggest that there won't be any action against him at the moment so we're in this strange situation where it seems that you know certain people within football can if not do anything they won't be you know there won't be action taken against them and yet for all those there will even when there isn't a criminal case pending against them so there's a lot of criticism of Roger Goodell face Stones yes it's a very difficult thing because you know they they kind of course corrected 5 years ago when you know there was video of the ray right of Ray Rice punching his fiance out and when there when that happened there was no way that they could kind of justify keeping on the field even though he had entered a pretrial diversion program he wasn't going to jail you know it kind of went through its own law enforcement channels and so I think they they cut they they overcorrected on one direction where they decided that they needed to have kind of a higher moral authority than the criminal justice system and what they found was that that was extremely difficult you don't have subpoena power so many of these things rely on all sorts of evidence but specifically you know. Or the accuser is kind of cooperating in testifying and in domestic violence incidents so often that that doesn't happen and you don't have that sort of kind of preponderance of evidence and you know I don't know what the right answer is but it's very clear that the way that they're going about it right now isn't working out well I was going to ask you that because they obviously brought in as you say this this disciplinary policy is there any sense that the actual bringing in of it has helped because N.F.L. Football is so often a caught up in you know sometimes quite major scandals on the way and yet you seem to have been any sign of backlash as a result of this policy Well I think you know I think if you look at the numbers that arrests have have actually got down to me there are fewer you know I think I think their players are. On the whole are getting in far less trouble I think they're you know. But the incidents that have happened have been far more high profile I think as I think a lot about is the media environment there's a lot more awareness than a lot more discussion about especially as it is of domestic violence which I suppose that's a positive it's being talked about a lot more and they put a lot of put in place a lot of you know counseling services and education programs and Prevention all these sorts of things but but when you look at the actual policy that's in place that kind of step the latest 6 game baseline suspension for players who are accused not of not who are accused not necessarily convicted out but were accused domestic violence sexual assault child abuse it has not been applied that way so there's they're working on a new collective bargaining agreement at some point within the next couple of years we'll see if there's a work stoppage or not but I would imagine that player discipline at commissioner power to impose such does that plan will be a part of that because the players were certainly not happy with the policy that the owners put place 5 years ago and this is their chance to maybe take some of that back Well Lindsay will definitely catch up with you when when you know all those changes coming in thank you so much for staying with us if you'd like to give any more views on the Brecon And regarding the share violation you are welcome and very. Thanks very much I'm Dave but in many ties let let's let's nuke over to show ground where the result has come through of the election. Jonathan breaks that. How do you put into words what has happened is this the story that voters have memories and don't underestimate them or is this the Boris bounce isn't perhaps as big as we thought the day was going to be but it stopped it from being a much bigger defeat or is it the to remain alliance can sometimes work. I think Nick not to try and give you know politicians on separate It's probably a combination of all of those I think if you look let's just take the numbers. Because it's worth stressing how narrow a victory this was for the Liberal Democrats 13826 votes the conservatives just behind them 12401 so a margin of victory there of 1400 votes so busy a very very narrow win for the Lib Dems but a win nonetheless and one that they will say shows they are a party only and they will say shows a campaign to stop bricks it a campaign to remain in the European Union a campaign against talk of no deal against talk of taking the U.K. Out and delivering on the road results of the referendum can win a seat from the Conservative Party whose message of course now is the opposite of all of those things but you're right to mention the remain Alliance plight come re the Green Party who both would have been on the same side of the arguments as the Lib Dems on breaks it agreed not to stand and allow the Lib Dems to probably take most of their votes and it's it's interesting isn't it true on the other side the breaks it passes just as a depressive party did dent the conservative vote and if the $3000.00 or so votes for the bricks at party had gone the Tories way then we could have been looking at a conservative win here it's interesting isn't it that the despite the Greens not putting in candidates not all her vote went to the Liberal Democrats. No I mean the after the 1st and 2nd place you've got breaks apart in a distance worth pointing out that this was an absolutely abysmal result for Labor getting just shy of 1700 votes in any Welsh constituency frankly that is an appalling result for the Labor Party and shows just how far they fall in in terms of support. In this area what can we read from that to their support nationally it's very difficult to tell since 2017 the Labor vote here has fallen away and it's a boy election people may have voted differently if it was a German part of a general election we don't know but it's nothing short as a say as an absolute of an absolutely shocking result for Labor tonight but the turnout what it was a pretty healthy just below 60 percent is good for a boy election and so I think we can read this as a solid and authentic and credible reflection of how voters in this part of the U.K. Which is a rural constituency a lot of farmers no major towns feel about yes local issues but overall the issue of breaks it and how it's playing out at this point in time Interesting does well to see the party got twice as many votes as the Labor Party. Yes And whether it's Labor's supports. Staying at home traditional Labor Party voters just feeling that they couldn't come out and vote for Labor. That that is behind their terrible result here tonight then perhaps that's the case but. The break the party showed in the European elections not long ago they could take votes from all parties and all sides and in parts of the U.K. Where the labor vote has been traditionally strong the party did well as well there's other areas as well and we know that Labor's message on BRACKS It has been at times confused and vague and. Fluid shall we say and perhaps that was something which held them back. Here But the press it Party will be pleased with their 3rd place finish will be a distant one with just over 3300 votes because it shows that even with the Conservative Party leader and Boris Johnson who has that story do or die message on Grex is a very different one in tow to reason may be they can still. Make a dent in the Conservatives. Vote and they can still challenge them albeit from a distance electorally and I think they'll be heartened by the 3rd place here this is when you look at the of the labor vote I mean everyone makes a big force about whether or not they manage to keep their deposit that's not the real point is not about the finances of it at all it's about whether a party that is the official opposition in the House of Parliament can actually get more than 5 percent of people voting for it. Yes And there's that sort of arbitrary figure of as you say of 5 percent which is which allows a party to keep the deposit they paid to be a part of the election and if their vote falls below that it's something of a symbolic sign that you know there really is a negligible level of support for that party in this part of the world so labor we've very disappointed with that and if you look back at the result of the 2017 election the fall in support is quite striking and it's. Let's not be talking about this is as if the Lib Dems have come from nowhere this is a seat that has changed hands between the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats before the last by election here was in 1985 obviously the height of Margaret Thatcher era in government very different political backdrop at the time one the liberals liberal S.T.P. Alliances it was then I was able to take from the Tories Yes at a drop from. $7300.00 odd votes in 2017 and 17 percent of the the the vote share so labor not having a huge presence in this constituency but certainly not. A showing to be embarrassed about going from that to the kind of turnout they saw here this evening has got to be cause for concern for the Labor Party I would say not only here in Wales but U.K. Wide as well given the Prime Minister when. When he inevitably has to to give a post-mortem on this result which he will do in the next day or so Willie put the conservative candidate Chris Davis to the sword or will it be the the low the decision just to let him stand again even though he'd been the He'd been recalled and he being convicted of expenses road. Was it his fault well. It's it's in that depends on the who you talk to you know there was I think outside of this constituency there was the sort of the news moment and frustrated reaction and and probably furious reaction from from some quarters in the Conservative Party nationally and in Westminster the party here had selected Chris Davis to fight the seat again having as you say been convicted of expenses Freule. But he despite the recall petition despite the fact that all those people. 18000 or so signed a petition to recall him is popular and he's a well known figure and and he's been a constituency constituency M.P. For many years he used to be a vet is and former agricultural somebody who people recognize and know in this constituency so I don't think necessarily it's hard to say more grounds people voted we'll never know will we exactly why people put a particular cross in a particular box but it didn't seem during the campaign as far as we could see and tell that that expenses issue played particularly. With voters in a particularly big way you know either negatively or positively had it been a different candidate who knows. I think we'll have to say I'm not sure Boris Johnson will hang him out to dry by name I think we'll hear a lot of familiar talk of governments getting a kicking in by elections and this was always going to be a struggle for us and that we faced a strong challenge from a resurgent Liberal Democrat Party and others dropping out. But I think the Boris Johnson and ministers will do all they can to avoid talk of this by election in the in the coming days and weeks and now just have to take it on the chin Jonathan thank you so much for that little. I'll be playing election post-mortem Bingo to see which phrases come out thank you very much indeed for that . And I couldn't afford For more we're going to hear how a bully and her victim became friends on social media and how 75 years after the uprising in Warsaw the city tonight been marking the anniversary of what happened over 63 nights back in 1944. And. This is the B.B.C. Radio 5 we have had so much already in the SO much more to come it's 3 o'clock on 5 Live I'm gonna say this is awful night and the many hours you've been hearing the Brecon in red issued by elections won by the Lib Dems and in sports Australia's Steve Smith goes from here on day one of the this is B.B.C. 5 and with the latest news coverage around his neck the Liberal Democrats have won the Brecon in Radnor should by Langston change the new M.P. Chris Davis the Conservative Party candidate by about 1400 votes and she's got this message for the prime minister my very 1st act as your M.P. When I arrive in Westminster will be to find Mr Boris Johnson wherever he's hiding and tell him a loud and clear stop playing with the future of our communities and rule out a no deal breaks that now the result means Boris Johnson now has a working majority of just one M.P. In the House of Commons Simon told me he's a professor of government at the University of Sydney I think whether it's a majority of one to 5 he put them all in the same spot but the thing is really to appeal to the broader public trying to get that for a spell so I suppose. Order a really positive message about how Rex It is not going to be the disaster that the mainstream media is presenting and that if you stick with chorus you'll also have an answer to those kind of hysterically issues as well police say a damn war's at risk of bursting in Darbyshire is still in the balance there's a severe flood warning in place for the town of Whaley Bridge thousands of people have been told to leave their homes Mitchie nuke helicopters helping to live at aggregates or water can flounce where a correspondent Judith Morris has more the police have said again tonight that they understand that being evacuated from your home is a very difficult decision and they say it's certainly not one that we make lightly but it is that the case still that the future of this dam wall remains in the balance and they wanted to remind people of the very real danger posed to them should the wall collapse and woman will be sentenced later after she was convicted of murdering her 2 young children who is supporting his 23 killed her daughters aged 3 and one because they got in the way of a sex life the South Korean military says the short range projectiles test fired by North Korea last night flew more than 200 kilometers and reached the heights of 25 kilometers so all thinks that could be a new type of short range ballistic missile similar to those launched by Pyongyang last week he said Rocky's told the court in Sweden he and his team felt threatened by a group they had a fight with the U.S. Rapper denies assault has been giving evidence of his trial in stone these guys you know their behavior was very weird we didn't know what to expect when they got a little scary for us I couldn't help but assume that these guys were under the influence of some type of drugs and the government's planning to create up to 10 free ports across the K.F.
