In a central feature of his address on Afghanistan last night President Trump admitted that his original instinct was to pull out of a 60 year old conflict that doesn't drain the blood and treasure of America and its allies but by surrounding himself with generals a president had ensured that the discussion of Afghanistan strategy continued at cabinet level for months zone views are a matter of public record going back to a time before it's kind of the say when he tweeted it's time to get out of Afghanistan and added We're building roads and schools for people that hate us convincing the president to stay in an even increase troop numbers was never going to be easy. Mr Thomas gone as far west as Arizona for the 1st time since becoming president on Tuesday afternoon he went to see a big u.s. Border patrol base and inspected a drone which is being used to spot illegal immigrants coming over the border from Mexico but after the fallout over some of his comments about last week's violence in Charlottesville He's expected to face some opposition when he rallies his base for the 8th time since becoming president and we'll bring you live coverage of that rally around 3 o'clock in the morning this as the secretary of state Rex Tillerson has said that America may not have a winnable war in Afghanistan even after the new strategy that the president and i sed involving more troops although he wouldn't be specific about numbers speaking about this plan at a news conference. Strikes Tillerson said the Taliban come when either and at some point they're going to have to be peace talks I think the president was clear this entire effort is intended to put pressure on the Taleban to have the Taliban understand that you will not win a battlefield there tree we may not win one but neither will you so at some point we have to come to the negotiating table and find a way to bring this to an end well out of Mr Trump's Mogs last night about the role that he expects the Pakistani government to play and bringing the Taliban to heel and Mr Tillotson said that Pakistan has a part to play in bringing the Taliban to peace talks but it has to change its ways and stop harboring terrorists Pakistan in particular can play an important role here certainly on the everyone Taliban to the negotiating table Pakistan has suffered acts of terrorism their citizens have suffered acts of terrorism as I think is dramatic as any we've seen anywhere and we stand ready to help Pakistan address terrorist organisations inside of their country but they must they must adopt a different approach themselves. I'm just as the president talked about a strategic partnership with India so the secretary of state also alluded to India having an important role to play in achieving peace and stability in Afghanistan Don Feldman is a former u.s. Special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan and he's now trustee of the Asia fund ation Good evening Mr Feldman Good evening. Well given given what's going on I You use we said last night what we've got here is an administration which is speaking one on Afghanistan as Mr Tillerson with the program as well. I think this are to those in separate to listen it probably is with the program but I think he's also trying to be more realistic and pragmatic about the path that lies ahead I think President Trump was. Certainly over the enthusiastic last night about suggesting that we would be winning winning winning when in fact the strategy that he laid out I think helps to ensure that Afghanistan can become more stable and secure which. Is a great benefit which is why I think many Afghan experts supported parts this strategy but it doesn't get us much beyond stalemate and so I think the real key to this is what do we do that's a complement to the military strategy as laid out by President Trump last night and that's what was really missing in my mind from the speech there was very little there is nothing beyond lip service paid to a political or economic or development strategy that would accompany this military strategy that's quite scathing that it doesn't didn't some of the things the president said have to do with a strategy and he wasn't talking about particularly putting pressure on Pakistan to start rocking the boat and supporting the Taliban. Sure he said that but that's no different than anything that I saw during my close to 7 years as a senior position within the State Department under the Obama administration we delivered very very tough and consistent messages to Pakistan from our most senior civilian and military leaders over the course of the administration. Frequently demanding that Pakistan do more to address safe havens but we also did that typically in private rather than public because we thought they were more effective that way and we also did so mindful of the fact that we had to strike a delicate balance in our approach to Pakistan because there are issues where we want to continue to work with him very closely because it's in our national security interest to do so and that would include Pakistan's continued. Our continued use of the ground in Air Lines of communication through Pakistan to to help resource our troops in Afghanistan it includes joint counterterrorism. Activities against al Qaeda in particular and it includes continue discussions with Pakistan on the nuclear proliferation and security issues so it's a it's a delicate balance but it is something that was a hallmark of a Obama years in my service under Secretary Clinton and Kerry. So obviously we got a president on a loud and cough as he admitted themselves he said that when he came to this office the last thing he wanted to do was continue the war in Afghanistan and of course he's he's listened. And changed his mind is there a possibility that he will continue on that learning curve and get to the point where clearly he understands what you would. I would hope so. I'm heartened by the fact that he did take the advice to stay in Afghanistan and to in fact increase our troop levels a little bit he didn't give any of the details to determine exactly how much or how that would be done and I think there are very legitimate questions about what's missing in this strategy so we don't have an answer to a question of how several 1000 more troops which would take us up to perhaps. 12 or 15000 combined international troops in Afghanistan could help to achieve a military success that 150000 troops could achieve. 5 or 6 years ago but what I think that he will have to recognize is what virtually every military leader and civilian leader in Afghanistan has said over the last few years which is that there is no military resolution to this conflict there has to be some sort of negotiated political settlement and beyond saying that he was open to it at some point in the future we didn't hear anything from the president last night about how to empower diplomacy and in fact I think the recent actions of the State Department the fact that there my former office of the office is the special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan was dismantled that there's that there's no senior political officials in place for virtually the entire department other than the secretary in the Deputy means that it will be very hard to actually implement an effective diplomatic strategy so. If I may paraphrase here when the president says a fundamental pillar of our news strategy is the integration of all instruments of American popular diplomatic economic and military throughout a successful outcome what you are saying is show me the money because it doesn't look like it right now. It certainly doesn't look like it and I have to say that that was truly the hallmark of the Obama administration approach to Afghanistan which would be this extremely integrated political diplomatic civilian intelligence economic and military strategy in fact the office that I served in the special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan the 1st. The 1st person who served a special representative was Ambassador Holbrooke I certainly has his as his deputy and he brought together this whole of government effort where we had 2 star generals and intelligence agents and Department of Justice attorneys and USA id experts and others all who sat in our office and reported up to him with his reporting directly to Secretary Clinton the president to demonstrate that whole of government effort we had a civilian surge that was larger than any such civilian surge in our nation's history sending $1200.00 civilian experts on everything from agriculture to rule of law if Ghana stand to compliment the military presence and it takes really coordinated effort like that to try to ensure that we have long term stability in Afghanistan and not only have we not seen anything beyond the president saying just last night that there would be some sort of integrated strategy but we've seen censored diminishment of diplomacy across the board in of the State Department and USAID thus far that's very hard to imagine how that could ever take place in this Mr ation and before the speech there was a great deal of. Farm discussion that what the president would announce would be an extra $4000.00 American troops and specialists bringing the numbers up to something like 2 and a half 1000 and yet when he spoke he said we will not talk about numbers of troops or our plans for the military or the conditions on the grow no arbitrate timetables will guide our strategy for all now on. Is that well what do you make of that noise knowing that the guy does he do you know I think that there would actually be a fair amount of agreement bipartisan agreement to support. An increase in military troops that were conditions based and not just time based. But what that does if you don't articulate what the conditions actually are which did not occur last night so we don't know what those metrics may be for alternate withdraw the troops or when they've achieved success without those benchmarks or metrics laid out you set the stage for us international forces in Afghanistan for many years to come indefinitely and that's exactly what the president said he wouldn't. Support last night so we really need to see the details of a range of these plans including how a relatively modest increase in forces there is going to have the transformational effect that he claims it will have I think that Secretary Thompson was right today to suggest that this doesn't mean that we will be able to win militarily because as I've said from General Petraeus on down over the years military leaders have said there is no military resolution so the only sustainable resolution would be to energize some sort of reconciliation effort with the Taliban and that there doesn't appear to be any real effort to do right now nor frankly anyone to do it at the State Department that Feldman former u.s. Special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan thank you very much for joining us thank you for having me thank. Well a gruesome story continues in Denmark police now say that a woman's torso discovered in Copenhagen was deliberately dismembered the limbs in the head were removed on purpose and then I waiting for d.n.a. Test results to see if this is the missing Swedish journalist Ken wall she hasn't been seen since going on a submarine trip with a Danish entrepreneur Peter Masson on August 10th Michael Barrett as the editor of the local Denmark and I spoke to Michael our lawyer. And he told me more about the discovery of the body it was discovered yesterday afternoon by a cyclist who was cycling along the shore of an island called Am I which is next to Copenhagen rather surprisingly actually because. Authorities on both the Danish and Swedish side of the us and straight had been looking for the body been searching for the body since the middle of last week without any success and had piece together the route of the submarine on the night disappeared so they'd spent rather all the time searching for it without any concrete leads and then yes until the body was finally found on the shore of Copenhagen. And admitting that at this point were so making to him to make 5 How far away from the root of the submarine was the body actually discovered. Well the the exact route of the submarine is not has not actually been made public by the police but it's it's fairly close to the route of the submarine the submarine left from the harbor on another island which is also part of Copenhagen and then appears to have traveled south through the us and strait and the the island where the body was found yesterday Emma is south of Copenhagen so it would appear it's fairly close to the route without being able to say what the exact route was. Clearly this is a major part bit of forensic evidence that the police now. What are they saying about it I mean is it likely to be able to be positively tested one way or the other and in terms of identifying the body of Kim wall the missing journalist place of. Stressed. Both day and yesterday in the statements that they've made they they can't confirm that the body has been found is Kim will however the lead investigator did also say in his press statement today that there is. There's no sign Well there's nothing to point out that it isn't so they're not committing themselves but they have said they're expecting to be able to make some form of confirmation later on this week there's so much in the story that is unclear but but for the benefit of anyone who might just be coming to it can you just run over what seems to be no a about this this trip in this homemade submarine that that can wall apparently took. Yeah Kim Kim will and the owner of the submarine Peter Masson took this trip a week and a half ago on Thursday the 10th of August. The submarine appeared to vanish for a few hours in the early hours of Friday 11 of August before reappearing. Then suddenly sank and. A private boat went out to pick up the people they've been on board the submarine when that vote came into that and only Peter Masson had been rescued his initial story to police was that he drops Kimora off packing type and taken the previous night shortly after he was arrested on charges of preliminary Mansell's like Copenhagen police and from that point they began searching for Kim will. Who was reported missing by this stage the search didn't turn a truly I mean this truly a Scandinavian story isn't it because got so many twists and turns and many of the twists and turns occur in Mr Martin's own story which he's no changed how many times he's changed a story once at least. A lot of the statements he's given to the court have been kept. Under wraps by the court but he has changed his story at least once. He's he's is he's current expects the nation is that Kim will die due to an accident on board the submarine after which he buried her see. That that was the explanation he gave the court. So yes he has changed a story but exact details of the statement he's given in court have been kept private the investigation is continuing behind closed doors for since the recovery of the torso of the police said anything about it at all. The place of said the torso was missing parts arms both legs and its head. The lead investigator on the case also said that the body had been in the water for some time he confirmed it hadn't exact words was it didn't fall into the water today which again seems to suggest that. They are. Linking it to the Kamal case which which of course would be an obvious thing to do but those are the only real details that given. Because I haven't been able to make any positive confirmation of the identity so. Michael Barrett in Copenhagen and we'll get more on this in the next day or so from the Danish police well the Times has a piece of good economic news saying that the the national debt shrank last month thanks to the 1st July surplus in 15 years which might allow the chancellor to ease austerity somewhat The Times also reports that Europe will be increasingly at risk from terrorists posing as migrants unless Western capitals help Libya to step in the numbers crossing the Mediterranean according to the prime minister talking to the Titans and in the Star a story which. Belies the headline sausage kills swinger at sex festival and then here's the body of the story not you know don't get the wrong idea please a man found dead at the kinky outdoor sex festival may have been killed after growing up a sausage snack in his tent here from a sister paper the Daily Express as Michael Booker from page is taken from a b.b.c. Documentary that's going to be on Sunday Diana 7 days it's about Princess Diana and the 7 days following her death nearly 20 years ago the kind of change the country and the monarchy is mainly built around interviews with Prince Harry and Prince William and the headline in is on the front page he was there for Rose and what Harry in particular is saying he's sticking up for Prince Charles after what's being seemingly a summer in which his reputation is taking a bit of a bashing amid the commemorations of Princess Diana's death Harry princes Charles for the way he cared for him and Prince William in the immediate aftermath of their mother's death in 97. Earlier in the week we saw there was a couple of opinion polls one in particular which said that Charles and Camilla's popularity has plunged because. Cause of the documentaries and various published say this being going on but in the interview that screened on Sunday night in the basi documentary Harry he said one of the hardest things for a parent to have to do is to tell your children the other parent has died how do you deal with that I don't know but you know he was there for us he was the one out of 2 left and he tried to do is best but you know he was going through the same grieving process as well and I think it's the 1st time the child has actually been mentioned and the documentaries that the the 2 lads have gone over the past few months about various things mental health charities and things like that and I think they are trying to set the record straight all about it but it was it's a fascinating documentary by the sound of it in 1000 minute program talk to people like Tony Blair and it describes the time I live in the Queen was taken aback by the whole country's grief of over what happened and William says My grandmother wanted to protect her to crown and grandsons and my father as well but I don't think anyone even my grandmother had seen anything like this before so it's a fascinating documentary as I said and I think the people who watch it. Know the the convicted Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe has been writing to a reporter which in itself is quite an event yeah it is because the families have never heard him actually express they did anything particularly wrong back in between 175 and 1900 He's currently serving 20 life sentences for the murders of 13 women but over the last year or so there's been stories about him being interviewed by the police again over attacks particularly on men. See you can this is b.b.c. . 6 with. Hundreds of people queued up in 100 degree heat waiting for President Trump and his vice president Mike Pence hope they're holding a rally in Phoenix Arizona sometime after about 3 o'clock or type a dozen different protests are expected in other Phoenix locations and the mayor of Phoenix Greg Stanton had criticized the president for coming in a holding a rally a tall well we'll have live coverage a little bit later eyes on a is home to some high profile Trump supporters but also 2 senators who are anything but include the senior senator John McCain of the junior Republican Senator Jeff Flake who recently published a book accusing President Trump of having a corrosive impact on the Republican Party President Trump looking forward to his visit tweeted that Senator Jeff Flake is weak on borders crime and a non-factor in Senate he talks like exclamation point that the president tweeted So who is he and why has he got the president so worked up it's a question I've been asking McKay Coppins a journalist who spent 3 months with Mr Flake aerialists. Writing a profile for the Atlantic Jeff Flake is one of the few Senate Republicans who. Started out not supporting Donald Trump in the presidential campaign and ended the campaign still not supporting him he's been one of the most outspoken critics of the president from his own party and the reasons vary from ideological reasons to just matters of kind of morality and taste but basically Flake has emerged as kind of a thorn in the side of Donald Trump and I think that we've seen the president act this way with other opponents but he is especially he's especially offended at and kind of outraged when somebody from his own party a leader in his own party goes after him the way the plate has done. Flake is a conservative senator from Arizona he also just recently came out with a book called Hundreds of a conservative Well it is a good to it's amazing the end of Twitter relate to the Donald Trump as a book. Yes that's right that's right I'm sure the things that actually bothered from part the. Quotes from the from the book but yeah I mean look I spent a lot of time with Blake writing this profile and through most of the time I was writing the profile I didn't even know he was writing a book. Actually kept it secret for basically everyone from his own advisors and aides and staff is going and the reason was because he knew that if he told his staff that he was writing this book right now that they would try to talk him out of publishing it because it really is a kind of devastating critique of the president and the brand of politics that he represents and it comes at a time when Jeff Flake is up for re-election next year so it's really he's taking a political risk coming out so strongly against Trump but what Flake told me when I asked him about it was that he feels like taking this risk is the only way that his message will be taken seriously and so far it has made a lot of waves. I mean just to just to try to put one quote there for people just to get something get their hands on something he is very strangely enough pro-immigration he's in Arizona which is a right on the border with Mexico and he says when we say no Muslims are no Mexicans we may as well say no more months and no Mormons would really get to him wouldn't it because he's that backyard that's right Jeff Flake is a Mormon he grew up in a large Morgan Stanley on a cattle ranch. One of the Levin kids actually just a sense of his background but one of the things you know I talked to a flake about this and he said. You know 2 things stand out about Trump's immigration proposals and one of them is that flake grew up. Working alongside migrant labor alongside Mexican and immigrants South American immigrants and he said they basically became kind of part of his family and what he told me as I could never look at them as and see a criminal class so that's one reason you kind of offended by Trump's hardline anti immigrant rhetoric but then he was especially upset by the anti muslim rhetoric because he sees that as an affront to religious freedom which is kind of a core principle here in America and you know he sees in his own a Mormon history of the Mormon Church in America is rife with a lot of the same persecution that Muslims are now facing in America so he he sees kind of eerie echoes from his own fates history and he finds them very unsettling. Now starting in 2010 there was a revolution in the Republican Party and a norful lot of people who were moderate were pushed by the new conservatives and the Tea Party Where does he belong in the great ideological scheme of things right well it's interesting he is in kind of an ideological Noman slant and I say that because on many issues he's extremely conservative on issues of government spending . On issues of kind of the size and scope of government he's pretty well aligned with the Tea Party that came into power in 2010. But then there are certain social issues like immigration where he's much more moderate is much more likely to be found working across the aisle with Democrats trying to kind of build consensus and find compromise and then just generally there's also kind of a stylistic thing with him where he you know unlike a lot of the Tea Partiers in his party he did you got a bomb thrower by nature he was very offended and spoke out at the time you know 5 years ago 6 years ago when Donald Trump was floating this conspiracy theory about President Obama's birth certificate claiming that he wasn't really born in the United States Jeff Flake signs kind of the conspiracy theories and and underlying prejudice and racism and I'm really repellent and he's been known to speak out against that stuff in a way that a lot of the more conservative members of his party that share his political ideology aren't willing to and tell us a little bit about him as a human being and you tell us that a very telling story in The Atlantic profile about the 2012 State of the Union address and what the. Yes So this was. To him one of the more jarring illustrations of the growing deficit of decency in Washington d.c. He he was sitting next to at the State of the Union Address Gabby Giffords who is a friend and fellow member of Arizona's congressional delegation She's a Democrat and. Several years ago this was about a year after she had been shot in the ad by kind of a madman and. And it was a big nationals and the story when it happened and Jeff Flake being close with her sat next to her at the State of the Union she was still recovering from her wounds and and throughout the state of the Union she made a point of kind of gently helping her to her feet whenever she wanted to applaud with the other Democrats President Obama's speech. And what that gesture meant was that Flake was often the only Republican on his feet during the applause lines and told me he actually started getting text messages and e-mails from people asking him why he would dare to stand during President Obama's speech. Which really is I think says a lot about him as a person and that you know he's basically a decent man and you know a gentleman but also says a lot about not just his party but kind of the hyper polarized in toxic state of politics in Washington right now. It's such a sad thing I need he he's very regretful a lot of people very regretful about the way that the Senate has gotten and he made an instructive compassion didn't deal with the House of Commons. Yes that's right you will He was he was saying that he enjoyed watching the House of Commons and he actually during my interview with him one of my interviews with him he tried to do his best imitation of a slice d.m.p. Tried his best British accent and said all rubbish it was not very good I can tell you. But but what he said was that you know the. Senate. Especially the said especially the Senate but the Congressional system in America is different and the Senate prides itself or at least traditionally has I'm being what you know many in American politics call the greatest deliberative body the world's greatest deliberative body and traditionally the Senate was a place where. You where politicians were were civil with each other there was a lot of strong emphasis on decorum they took a lot of time to study the various policy issues at play. They worked in committees to try to find build consensus and find compromise and a lot of that has just gone away over the past several years there have been several kind of dramatic episodes in American politics. Throughout the Obama years where Republicans you know would lead an effort to shut down the federal government where you know big dramatic showy filibusters took place where senators do all night rants and speeches trying to drive up like no but basically the Senate has you know I think anyone who could who calls it the greatest deliberative body these days is doing so ironically enough and Jeff Flake really you miss is the days when when you know members from different parties and different ideological backgrounds could come together and try to solve problems together that's just really not happening in Washington anymore and I wish when he's standing for reelection and what chances go but but maybe I'm the more. Pressing question is does he want to be reelected to the body this is a good question and I as I've been talking to people about this profile not enough people have asked it. You know I have to say so I was I spent a lot of time with him I traveled with him to Arizona but the last time I talked to him in person was the day after there was a shooting. In Virginia out here where a number of Republican congressional members were practicing for an annual baseball game that they play and you know this happened a couple months ago somebody showed up and started shooting at the members and one of the leaders of the Republican Congress actually was shot and so in several several weeks in the hospital so Jeff Flake was there and he wasn't hurt thankfully but he was really shaken up and I spent I talked to him just the next day he was with his wife and you know both of them were very rattled by this and his wife in particular told me some stories about how much more toxic American politics has gotten just in the 15 years since Jeff Flake 1st ran for Congress she said today she no longer feels comfortable putting images of their children in campaign literature on the Internet because there were she's worried about compromising their safety when there are public forums where just like speak some people show up to scream at him and Akhil him and boo and she gets really rattled and is worried about his physical safety and you know I can't read their minds of course and flake is running for reelection he feels like he's kind of fighting for the soul of the Republican Party right now but I will tell you I think that it would come as a relief to to his wife and some of his family and maybe even to flake himself some part of them if he didn't end up winning reelection. McKay Coppins and this whole pieces on the Atlantic website Well there was good news about Italy after the earthquake yesterday on the holiday island of Ischia in which turns out 2 people lost their lives here with that vote today 3 brothers were all pulled from the rubble in a space of 16 hours 1st a baby boy has 7 months old who was sleeping in his playpen in the kitchen and then 2 other brothers one who is $8.00 and $1.00 who is 117 hours apart 1st the 8 year old boy yes and then finally the 11 year old boy chiro and it turns out that the 11 year old boy probably saved his brother's life by pushing pulling him underneath the bed when the quake hit and both boys were trapped under the bed the bed frame and the mattress probably creating an air pocket for them so when the 3rd brother was finally pulled out of the rubble the father of course was there with bandaged hands he'd been digging with his bare hands for 16 hours cheers went up all over you know all over of course on site there and across the nation people were looted this knowledge and watching this live amazing story of really is. What sort of injuries to the bus suffer. Well the eldest boy who was there for 16 hours he had a fractured foot but otherwise they were healthy the baby started crying the minute they pulled the baby out 8 year old boy clearly had bruises and was disoriented and dehydrated but all things considered and they were unscathed so really a miracle this is absolutely fabulous it's great as far as the quake in general was concerned I mean last night we were reporting one dead inside but that's gone up no to 2 dead doesn't it what what happened it has well there were 6 buildings that collapsed and that's something that should not normally happen in a magnitude 4 earthquake so there is an investigation underway right now as to what kind of building materials were used Ischia it has a lot of money of course it's a big tourist hot spot and so they are looking into why these these houses crumbled but also a church bell tower so one woman was crashed as she was heading into church and when the bell tower fell so 2 dead and 16 gravely injured but for the most part the hotels where the tourists were staying were undamaged So there you know the Island has about 60000 people it swells 585-0000 in the summer and most of those tourists it seems are staying put some of course you know lined up to get on the ferry slept outside because it's a shock when you're not used to earthquakes to to to have that happen there was a full blackout and some real rocking and rolling there as the quake went on for 13 seconds but for the most part it seems that the tourists are staying put there well as great as what I was just thinking it must have been of a shower quake if it only lasted 13 seconds and it was magnitude 4 it must have been right smack dab on by the time Well that's right it was only about 5 kilometers the surface of the sea and. Isc is in a very very high risk science says Mick area there's a big super volcano under the water near there which contributes to the grain fields volcanic area different from Brazil Yes but all of that region in the in the Bay of Naples is highly highly active from an earthquake and even volcanic activity so it's not a surprise that had quakes there before but there was nothing you know no warning so this was quite a big jolt 9 o'clock in the evening just as people were going out for dinner after a day at the beach and it definitely was a bit of a shock for the people on the island but as you say most of the tour so staying put which is good news in general for the Italian tourism industry which is having a bit of a banner year. Oh they really are I mean even in the in my hometown of Bologna which doesn't have the sea and doesn't have particularly beautiful mountains it's known for its food it was full of tourists Germans Americans lots of people in the streets and that seems to be the case across Italy Venice was even thinking about putting a cap on visitors. And that's again not even a beach. Holiday destination 7 out of 10 of this new sort of tourist boom people are going to the seaside so it's been about a. Big probably the biggest arise and tourists for the last decade 3 percent increase in foreigners and that's good news for Italy I think they're probably in some way benefiting from the fact that they have not seen a major terrorist attack so people feel very safe in Italy with what happened in Barcelona and Paris and nice London you know Egypt is off the books and Turkey is no longer a very favorite destination so Italy feel safe and and it seems to be a very popular destination especially among the British the Americans and Germans is those rights for a number of people quantify that and said well we're doing better by how much will there there been 34000000 visitors and that's business worth about 22000000000 euros that's a pretty big uptick tick and that's a lot of business for Italy which has been of course suffering for nearly a decade under this prolonged. Economic downturn So definitely they are hoping this is going to be part of a larger trend that's leading toward you know a better bettering Khana me in general which And the factors do point to that things are improving new prosperity for all the people who make money out of tourism but a tough tough year for the farmers absolutely difficult year for the farmers I mean there were late freezes which you know was hard on the. Crude industry and then we've had a prolonged drought no rain since last October no significant rain and there's been water rationing and in many cities for many of the canals and rivers that has caused big problems on some of the cereals crops but also wine looks like 2017 is going to be one of the scarcest. Wine harvests they've seen since the 2nd World War So they're talking about you know 35 percent drop in in grape and wine production in some of the regions of central Italy so that's not good for farmers either and there's quite a bit of concern about that because wine is course one of Italy's biggest exports and growing growing sectors. Who doesn't like Italian wine any areas of the country actually spend the main What about the northern parts suppose they're not such a big wine growing areas will they will be I mean one of the things they're looking at is the climate change and how it's shifting agriculture in Italy you've got all of gross now in Trentino places where once you know you just side dairy cows that ash Jeric Albine Meadows now they're starting to to produce all of oil you're seeing you know probably the for Seco business is really booming in Beneteau they've had a little more water up in the north and they've got the lakes of course that they they can draw from for irrigation and although the polo river delta is quite dry they are doing better the most hardest hit area has been unfortunately central Italy which is still recovering from the earthquake it experienced one year ago this week actually so it's been had sort of this double whammy of not only being struck by the earthquakes but also having this drought so on Bria lats you know and also of course Sicily is very very dry and suffering this year as well. And revote Well I was trying to have a dollar the Boston Globe David told Ron. You've got some some good news support even right really rather puzzling good news because one thing the politicians all agreed on that when they were around Massachusetts in particular was that there was a terrible problem with Americans call opioids. The opioid opiate painkillers. Addiction and they often death but it's the better news on this front. A glimmer of good news yes the number of opioid overdoses deaths overdoses has actually dropped in Massachusetts skin 27 teens I think that's the 1st drop that we've seen in something like 3 years in this state and it's been good growing tremendously and it's quite a crisis here and of course around the country President Trump declared just a week or so ago that this was a national emergency apparently that would release some funds and obviously heighten the attention toward it. 60000 people have died from opioid overdoses in the u.s. Last year in Massachusetts just over 2100 died so in these 1st 6 months of 2713 we've seen a slight decrease the state is reporting today that 978 people died that's down from around 1031 in the same period last year that's June right excuse me January to June of the 2 years so the governor of the state is saying that. There are there are some progress but he and. Many many others that we've talked to treatment professionals and health specialists are saying it's far from the time to declare victory here but a glimmer of hope as a slight decrease. But also a place where able to face some people know who they could save before. Absolutely so we're still seeing overdoses but people simply aren't dying from. They are armed with something called on our can which is a basically an overdose reversing drug that police and health officials and and a lot of sole source of the says people are armed with now rescue workers and they're able to administer this drug and and save their lives and get them to the emergency rooms so that's a big step and some of the folks we talked to they are also saying that to some early intervention detox. The state passed a law I think it was earlier this year that limited the the types and the amounts of prescriptions that can be issued by doctors and also I think there are typically some steps to steps to keep an eye on. Doctors that overprescribe if a doctor is seen as that by their records is seen as prescribing a lot you can see evidence here that there's perhaps some of this going on there the drug addicts are going to a particular doctor so there's a way to police that So all of those steps are kind of all converging to to help bring this death this should tell any number down. And in the place that definitely gave rise to. All these heroic stories of Whaling. There as well not good news for whales unfortunately not not not good news that the Right Whale. There are there are some signs that these endangered creatures are there amongst the most endangered creatures on the planet the New England right whales have died in an usual numbers this year something like 13 recorded in the waters off the u.s. And Canada these creatures are 50 feet long in a way up to Off $158000.00 pounds and lately ships have been causing their own natural deaths so an alarming report from the federal agencies today on that score. So. You know what's what's killing these whales but it's not the world. That's right. David thank you very much they would always joined us from The Boston Globe. For news and. I am a child in the party I love him I think he's going to do an awesome job so far there's been lots of shouting and disagreeing but no by of an overseas it's been a month and a half since North Korea sent up a ballistic missile rhetoric from that country has not been as pointed as it has been says Secretary of State Rex Tillerson I'm pleased to see that the regime in Pyongyang has has certainly demonstrated some level of restraint that we've not seen in the past secretary to or since. Has had a very different attitude toward North Korea than other members of the administration so while we've heard threats from various people secretary Dylan has been consistent in leaving the door open in saying that the United States is willing to talk to North Korea as Gordon Chang an author who's written about North Korea sanction by the u.s. News. Well we're going to head now to Anaheim in Southern California which is home to Disneyland apart from other things but Peter Bowes isn't there to go on Space Mountain he's there to do something far more a terroristic and enterprising is going to tell us all about it her Peter Hello Rod Yes I drove through the crowds heading to Disneyland on my way here today but you're absolutely right I'm not they're not taking the rides I'm the podcast movement a vent it's the 4th annual gathering of many many podcasters from around the world about 2000 in fact gathered under the same roof to talk podcasting to talk the creative side of podcasting the business side of pod casting which is so important to many people it has become a hugely profitable business to many for others they just simply doing it for the love of it and the delegates are just checking in is as we speak just around the corner here and preparing for 3 days of podcasting talk sessions or from leading podcasters famous podcasters to people seeking to perhaps get on board with them and get into business with them it's quite an inspiring kind of event it serves or says like great great fun apart from anything else of course it's slightly merge these these conventions Americans are very good at conventions that they've been having in the broadcasting in the say for years I mean anybody in the national public radio for example the American public broadcasting sector Well we're always going to conferences seems to me. Yes that's right there are many many broadcasting conferences around this country they often tend to head to Las Vegas for that kind of thing and this I suppose mirrors that of a cold everyone here a delegate a 2nd ago I don't whether that's the correct phrase it rather reminds me of a political conference I think the big difference between this event and a political convention is that everyone's very friendly here everyone is is really getting on with each other right so maybe I should introduce you to a couple of pod cast as who just join me here at the entrance to the convention 1st of all Steve Stewart who is a part caster and one of the team of hardworking producers working behind the scenes to put on this event Good to see you Steve thank you here for share thank you for having me on this is the 4th time for you this is indeed the 4th podcasting movement event how much has it grown over those 4 years you know I can remember the tennis numbers for the 1st year that we had at least $800.00 people that 1st year it started as a Kickstarter campaign so people are actually contributing to the idea and then when they hit their mark the 1st day we knew this was a big thing and now I say we I feel like I'm including myself this is founded by 4 gentleman who are really passionate about the medium Dan Franks Gerrity easily Gary Leland and Mitch Todd They came with the idea they organize the thing they launched it and the people who attended were just fanatics about the you know the whole medium of podcasting And so it's going to be here for years to come as well and could you encompass a lot for me what thought passion is you've been in it almost from the start and I've just been here for a few hours today to continue until the end of the week and I've seen a lot of passion already all the medium itself I think is passionate for people to be in is because we're so intimate with our listener they actually literally have us in their ear if you put an ear but in your you know in your ear you're literally as close to their brains as you can possibly be as a podcast or your listeners hearing you intimately so as a podcast you think and I'm reaching an audience and the the. Entry level for starting a podcast is so low anybody can do it of course that's also introducing problems people have high hopes for of these great you know measurements of success just because they put out a podcast and of course there's a lot more work to it goes into that and that's why they should be attending a conference like this because or to learn you know all the finer things you need to do with the business side of it and you know there's also the passion in the enjoyment of just knowing that you're contributing to all these different niches out there putting their masses of out about I don't know there's a show about llamas I think it is now well there's a show about just about everything for you you say anyone can do it I think the truth is not not everyone can do it and a lot of podcasts will fail people have the the ambition and the vision perhaps but when it comes to actually recording those episodes week after week after week they fail anybody can do it it's just Kenny do it well enough to make it work and it will they be able to keep going if they don't hit the results the you know if you're on a diet and you don't lose weight the 1st month you give up it's a lot of people have these expectations for greater numbers down the numbers interaction with their listeners things like that but anybody can do you know talk to their phone hook up a very simple you know your apple ear buds your computer and create an audio recording that you can upload to the Internet and you know it doesn't take a license or permit to get Listen i Tunes It's just you know we need to make it a little bit better than just you know 3 guys downstairs drinking beer talking about you know bowling or whatever which kinds of podcasts of the most successful Well that's a very hard question to answer because there are so many different niches and you see success in those nieces. A lot of the times we do think of course of those that have a radio background or tie in with you know like n.p.r. National Public Radio they have a lot of. People who listen to their shows on the radio are now listen to him on as a podcast so there's that there's a company out now called gimlet media they're creating some great narrative stories and they're making you know a good amount of money but they're also expending a lot of money to create those shows those are very popular but then you might have a you know comedian or like some like Joe Rogan who record the show and puts one out I don't know how often he puts it up as very frequently however there is one pot cast that hit a record of a 1000000 downloads the day it was released and as Dan Carlin with hardcore history it's only released as a podcast it's not an audio book although it could be because it's usually between 4 to 6 hours long and that's interesting because it isn't always the guys with the beers in the basement that achieve success it can be actually very serious minded subjects and positive as you mentioned that achieve success Yeah and if you think about it's going to the content that that brings them back if you're content is average it's no different to what you can do yourself than now I guess you can identify with the host of the shell but if you've got something that's really engaging entertaining it could be a knowledge that you're learning you know skills that you're learning that is what will bring people back and just in my own opinion the interaction of of the with your listeners is the measurement was of success and if you get them to subscribe to your show which is free then they come back every episode in the Eventually you know you'll get to interact with some of those listeners that really there's no way of knowing who they are until they do contact we're going to talk to Allison in a moment who hosts a podcast about food drop but to Steve let me introduce you to Rod. Hello Dave. Or you know I thought you were is this evening I'm sorry for our listeners is an indeterminate time of course because for us as we broadcast live so it's it's it's 2 o'clock in the morning in the u.k. Which course is a quintessential difference between what we do in broadcasting and what you do in part cussing which is independent of type and that's one of the great beauties of it is that I agree yes. Yeah having that on demand medium is really what makes podcasting unique it's the fact that you can record something put it out and it's not just available for a short period of time it's not something that runs for a period of time like on Netflix you get to the shows or the movies for a short period of time this can live on forever and so that's that really brings in this extra you know facets of what makes podcasting so unique so you know how to see you thank you very much indeed Alison move forward to the microphone Alison Mody hosts a podcast about food and specifically on this in food that heals Yes well I believe that food has the ability to either kill us or heal less and so I'm going to choose to use that are going to heal my body and that's what our part for well before we go any further let's just have a listen to a short clip from your podcast and yells podcast episode 46. My 1st yoga class it was very full stuffed in like sardines kind of class mathematics right next to my husband and he kind of saying you're supposed to have her like up like this up your spouse step put your hand behind her you know and I turned about See how about you're supposed to. Holistic voice presents the food heals whole cost with your hosts Alison melody and Susie Holliday join the food heals nation and learn the secrets to go from feeling unwell. Yourself warning side effects of the. Vitality increase and sexual like to follow right welcome food heals nation thanks for joining us I'm Allison Melanie I'm Susie Hardy Today's guest is. So there you are in full flow your podcast has been described as Sex And The City for food yes I'm a Charlotte and my co-host is the she's a Carrie but there is a serious element was a lot of humor and a lot of fun and his focus is well if you don't bring humor into serious topics then I find that people don't want to hear it. So we're all about telling the truth and sharing these holistic healing stories of people who have done phenomenal things and reversing auto immune disease and curing diseases that Western medicine doesn't have any answer for and it sounds far out but that's another reason why you need humor because you just have to approach it from a place where you go these are some serious topics where people aren't doing well and once they've reversed something then we can laugh about it and joke about where they've been and of course this is a the subject area you've had this interest for some considerable time so where did podcasting fit in in terms of you getting this message across well podcasting gave me a voice and so basically when you are into this holistic health and healing world you're telling your friends and family hey you got to like these blueberries because they're going to prevent heart disease and hate that dairy you know lead an ice cream sundae because it's full of cloth and it has been linked to cancer dairy house and your friends and family don't want to hear it so they're like I'm sorry I'm going to eat my food enjoy my life and shut the f. Up and so what we have to do is a we have to tell people we have to talk to the people who want to listen and that is where podcasting gave us of always had casting gave us a place where we could say you know what this is what we believe this is who we are and this is a platform for us to share our stories and. The biggest challenge for you because as we've just been hearing podcasting is sometimes Solus something that anyone can do have you founded. Well I do believe that in order to podcast and in order to do anything in the space you have to have that entrepreneurial spirit and you have to work for free and you have to put the hours and and if you're willing to do that everything can change for you whether it's your business and you start a podcast around your business and then you're able to get more clients or something like that but basically what we did is we started a podcast around our passion and not actually started becoming what we could do to then earn money and become our career but it took time to get to that place and what response have you had from listeners we've had a great response for the listeners that's actually the best part is when I was telling my friends and family like hey here is what I think about food and nutrition and they were saying we don't want to hear it I actually got to speak to people who did want to hear it and so our listeners poured in with questions and saying we want to talk about this and can you answer these questions so we do a lot of q. And a episodes because we want to help educate people about nutrition and the inmate healing power that the body has and so our listeners go nuts for our episodes and they tell they give us feedback they say hey this really works this really helped and hey can you talk more about this or can answer these questions about that. What's the next step for you because I know there's a lot of people around is that they're all talking about the next step for the podcast and some of it is a passion project a desperate to get sponsors and get financial backing to make it worthwhile for the many many I was that would put into it sure well if you want to talk about monetization unless you have a great job like you are a correspondent at the b.b.c. Or you are paid to be on n.p.r. You're not going to be paid to podcast if you're just starting from scratch and so we have to create our own monetization streams so the way that we do that ritually was through sponsors we. Actually gotten away from sponsors and we're actually creating our own content for our audience so we survey our audience and say What do you want to learn more about and then they tell us and then we create courses for them based on what they want to learn so it nutritionists come in talking about nutrition we have people coming in to teach them what they want to learn and that's how we monetize because like I said I'm not lucky enough to be at a point where I'm paid to podcast so I have to create that nothing good to meet you thank you very much on this new thing thank you so much when I came in here today I 1st of all noticed the vast array of different accents around me from obviously the United States many Australians here and then I heard this very distinctive Yorkshire accent just sitting right behind me a group of people here who are going to get you all Mark and Kiran and Izzy just introduce yourselves and tell us what you do. Here in our in the Chief Technology Officer websites which is annoying more technical solution for us this from Bali. And you all work together don't you Izzy. Hi I may say I'm head of success. And I'm hoping to launch my own pocket costs on the 21st of September 14 miles yes maybe we shouldn't get into too much detail as to what party about where we can imagine coming. Out basically it is. About being a single parent and from my experience so it's not what I thought and now. It's go put you off because let's just put this way I tell it is the good side and the bad such parenting and I don't sugarcoat and then I basically tell Alice So you tell stories from real life yes my own experiences my own struggles and I am often it's well over single parents out there from my experience and you say you hoping to guess you haven't started it you know now I am I've got I'm open to launch by the 21st of September so why you're here to essentially learn how to do it. Yes this is my 1st time. I have a casting conference so just get any insight into outlets setting have you done market research and do you know that there is an audience for what you want to say yes I've done my research and yes. Just past well good luck with it Marxists step forward either so you all work together or do you do kind of the guy that tries to do a little bit of everything on the co-founder here in a pod cast website some the guy that kind of thinks and plans and strategize and brings everything together and these are the real guys that make things up but I'm just the guy that unlocks the door and makes the tea and just to unravel it a little bit as in terms of what you do you provide services like building of the website the hosting of of the podcast for the people who are just going to put it bluntly can't get their heads around doing everything that you need to do to produce them to commercialize a podcast Yeah absolutely most people in the Star podcast the thing under going to turn up I'll turn the mike in it's a u.s.b. Microphone turn it on get recalled him or don't realize is to build intercessor shown a successful business if that's what they want obviously need the branded website they need everything that goes along side it so we take care of all that because when you start pod cast you don't have to learn to be a web designer as well so that's what we do and what is the demand for your services you're based in Yorkshire are you servicing clients locally or globally would you know that the funny thing is that 90 percent of our clients are us the best we've got our children we do have people in Sheffield in vans or in London that use our services as well in the demands just going up because you know it's like a barrier to pod casting to come right right down but the barrier to web still seems to be quite high so if we find that we fill that vacuum quite nicely so the demands only going up this is great to help people and what did you all do before this sort of background has helped to get into this industry so I was an agency and I did the agency model design and branding and marketing and digital agency so I saw seen the good in the bad of digital age. And so on so that was my background and I got into podcasting at an event much like this a few years ago and I just tricked transformed and changed how I thought everything so I was an agency on a before and it's a totally different way of working and here in this day one here you're just getting yourself a climatized and literally here which relates to the California sun but also the people around us and the events and it's quite bewildering Isn't it is so much happening here is just so much that is just so much energy as you know it is mental how that 1st asked me you know and in part in actual conferences just amazing to see how many people come and just share the same ideas and ideology is correct and is it is there something is there like a top 3 on your list in terms of what you want to learn from all these follow podcasters around to. This except I want to lead the insight into what the cost is all about I've only been in this business for 5 months some still and so quiet a place like this and me in people from all over the wealthiest and just lead in about the costs and what my entails and what sort of to listen to other part costs more so to listen to I listen to a parent to my. Cock Carmen voice cause. That's all right Ok All right it's cold but yes I listen to quite a few parenting class and joined a few groups on Facebook and this looks like thousands of people I think my audience of a quite yet quite wide it was great to meet you you know it was a party talk to just have to potty mouth could look at it you know you're all rushing off to an event so senseless often by Thank you very much Ok. Well there they go thank you very much we can we imagine the people boys just standing there directing traffic saying come his way for a few words with the b.b.c. They're broadcasting. Life's full sex try this is b.b.c. 5 live on the b.b.c. If I play a radio all night with rock shop we're going to rejoin Peter bows now at the podcast movement in California and they will find out what he's got to tell us now hello Peter Hello Rod Well I do feel a little bit like a broadcasting dinosaur here standing here with my life and I guess I wonder if I wonder how it is just the. Awful business isn't that here we are broadcasting and everybody is talking about reaching their specific audience that's the it's the exact opposite of broadcasting isn't it it's not because it is quite it is the opposite but it's I think there is a place for it it's certainly a nation and it's increasingly very very popular and I'm joined now by Daniel j. Lewis and Daniel hosts a podcast that I've been listening to for a long time it's called The Audacity to podcast and Daniel has built a business around the business of podcasting he trains other people on how to launch and most success of their podcast he creates a podcast into several of them one of them is called My podcast reviews and it helps people to keep track of what other people asserting about what costs Daniel good to see you thank you very much Peter I'd love a casting this gives us an opportunity to connect with an audience that we've never had before in the history of media and technology and I'm saying from an individual who could be literally in their closet or in their basement to have an international audience and change people's lives through pod casting is amazing how did you get into that. I discovered it when i Tunes 4.9 came out in 2005 cats had already been around then but I was either watching the keynote with Steve Jobs or maybe it was a coworker who was an Apple fanboy that said oh pod cast coming to i Tunes It's huge so I thought I'll check it out I found a few podcasts and I fell in love with it because while radio can appeal to a very broad audience and does a very good job of that I wanted more niche content and that's what I found in part casting So actually in those early days this was before the i Phone I didn't have an i Pod I had a laptop computer with i Tunes installed so I would set it in the passenger seat of my car and listen through the computer speakers while I was driving that's how I listen to podcasts back then and what was your life like before podcasting did you have broadcasting experience or was this the start for you I've not had broadcasting experience but I have had public speaking experience and production experience and so when I heard people making podcasts I realized I know how to do this I know how to prepare information and I can figure out this technology stuff I want to do a podcast and weighted the idea come from to essentially be the teacher to train other people how to do what customer I'd struggled as a podcast or in my early years and certainly made plenty of failures or was a failure in progress and I thought that among the other part casters that we're podcasting about podcasting So it's very matter I know I felt like there was missing approach and a perspective like from a public speaking background a production background and this was something I wanted and I felt like I had something to say in the space so why not show where then I could share my message with the world about the way I thought podcasting should be run or what I could contribute to help others make their pockets better so I just felt like I had something to say I had no plans then to make a business out of this or no idea that I would have an op. The I like to speak with you and and the b.b.c. Radio audience that came from podcasting Well it has become a huge business for you before we talk more about about let's just have a listen to a little clip from your podcast the audacity to podcast. Welcome to the audacity to podcast I've been pod casting now for 10 years and I am not done with my passion pod casting I am thrilled to be in this industry I love seeing the change people are making I love seeing being credible ideas people have in podcasting thank you for joining me for the audacity to podcasts and Daniel j. Lewis and this is the award winning in-depth podcast about podcasting It's where I give you the guts and teach you the tools to launch and improve your own podcast for sharing your passions and finding success if you're Pad cast is an improving. You do kind of overflow with passion and enthusiasm and that comes across in every pod cast that you do and what I've noticed about them is that they are incredibly detailed and wrote and done you can do a podcast just about microphones or just about editing or just about any of that my new shii that goes into to making a podcast and clearly you think that's important Yeah it's part of my curse kind of that I'm so in-depth with things and so when I study something I want to know everything about it that I can so that I can share that knowledge or that information with others so they can understand what they need to know it's not trying to give them every piece of knowledge that they don't need but what do they need to know what's the best way to understand this stuff so like if I may approach something like talking about recorders or mixers I want to inform my audience not just say this is the one to get I want them to know this one is good for this kind of use this one is good for this kind of yours here's what's good about these mixers Here's what's bad I want them to make their own decisions for what's best for them and their needs because with podcasting everyone studios in the needs and . And it's so different that you can't really say this one thing works for everyone like a true professional road Daniels wearing his b.b.c. Headphones so you 2 can actually talk to each other that's nice to know that you'll Hello it's awfully nice to talk to you. But I think you're sorry about the teeth thing you know I'm a big fan of tea I'm a big fan of British accents to wealth a good well as good now tell me this in the 10 years that you've been listening to podcasts has that the level of of what you would call professionalism actually changed by you are you hearing different things now you're hearing very highly produced podcasts or do you still cherish that little bit of a rough age. When I see happening in the industry as Certainly there are more podcast there are highly produced like now Public Radio giving answer it independent networks from former radio producers and hosts creating their own potash networks with a whole team of staff behind them editors writers producers researchers all of that and so the number of highly produced by cast has significantly increased but even back in the early days people were creating an audio drama podcast produced pod cast that were really good for me personally and what attracts me to podcasts is the niche and I would much rather listen to a guy from his basement talking about something I'm passionate about than listening to a highly produced show and they're certainly the place for the highly produced show and I find though that there's so much more passion in that small niche I was in an event recently where I was asking people to raise their hands to indicate how many of you played video games as a kid how many of you played on a computer as a kid how many of you played it on a p.c. Jr as a kid I'd narrowed it down to 2 people and then I asked how many of you played King's Quest on a p.c. Jr and one guy raised his hand and said Oh yeah. See I hit the passion when I hit the niche and that's what I see people doing in Pa casting talking about their niche and that's what I still enjoy to as much as the big productions are great and bring a lot of people into podcasts those independents that maybe some people may say are rough around the edges but these are people who know how to communicate and it's something I care very deeply about and that's what I love in this industry and I know obviously know their audience a bit before you came to join us of course peace who was brought to us Izzy from Barnsley is about to on top of a fast podcast but she knows who she wants to talk to she wants to talk to young single moms who are having difficulty with the mechanics of the baby and it's it's going to be a very very hands on podcast one can tell and she's working up a Facebook group who will essentially be higher listening audience that's that's pretty much what you're talking about isn't it it's knowing who you're going to be talking to before you even begin. Even reaching them where they are which is extremely reasonable to do with the podcast and you can take a podcast anywhere with you can listen in the car listen at home or anything and relating so much with them you know a mother talking to mothers a father talking to fathers whatever that's the the vision that people have like that woman you just spoke of to reach out to people like that is is amazing and podcasting gives us that kind of platform. And we must like piece about here too because we must talk about an audience which is almost fabled at the moment for mainstream broadcasters which is that the 25 to 44 and particularly young males if you break it down further the 25 to 34 years and if you listen to any broadcast manager they apparently would give you you know they'd they'd give you their house just if you could bring in the 25 to 34 young male audience but that as as we know is is where you're really podcast makers really having great success. Yeah you're right and I listen to a lot of pod casts rod and it's obvious that the the clever pod cast does have the market very much in their sights and it could be the key twenty's and thirty's male audience but there are plenty of podcasts catering for 60 euros 65 euros with very nice subjects that appeal to that kind of marketplace so it really has opened things up for the different demographics and yes it from a business potential to make money from those different audiences one thing I think I heard you say a one of your podcast relating that we're talking about Facebook a 2nd ago I think I heard you say once that a large Twitter following doesn't necessarily mean that your podcast is going to have a large following as well I know a lot of podcast is trying to promote the podcast through their Twitter feeds tweeting each episode lines from the episode quotes that kind of thing but is it not the case that they they don't necessarily go together but there's not a correlation because especially with Twitter that life of the tweet is so short you can tweet something now and one minute from now someone who's following you wouldn't see it because they're following so many other people who tweeted at the same time so these social networks are really a place to be social it's a better way to engage with the people already following you yes you can use social media to build a following but I think it's a better way to engage with people who are already following you so you can tweet out a question you can yes share your latest episode or you can ask for questions from your audience so you can get content that you can share in your podcast these are all ways to use these tools to build your platform instead of trying to build your brand on someone else's tools don't know stay with us I want to bring in someone else to the conversation who I met earlier and I do apologize armor be a name but I can't remember the name of your podcast makes Yeah my name is Adam Jeffrey I'm from a Strat and I've flown to Anaheim to be a part of podcasts movements my podcast is called mate it stands for marketing advertising technology and entrepreneurship that's a great title do you find to some people the title could be misleading or they don't quite know what you're about. It's not misleading it does exactly what it says on the box I don't need to read the book 1st yes sure I think the acronym requires a little bit of explanation but once you know that the past is about those topics that's what I talk about and I speak to industry leading guests each and every wake from each of those variables and sometimes they spend all those verticals and what do you hoping to get out of this week in this week's event so I have just started a podcast agency and I'm helping businesses to create their own branded pod casts So I'm here really to learn about how other people are approaching that same problem to learn about other formats of shows I'm very experienced doing an interview by show but I'm learning you know I think the future of pod casting is actually more in the the narrative style show and I'm here to network as well with other people who are doing interesting things and and you know industry leading in this space and how it's important visit and maybe don't you could have you on this the podcast is promote podcasts and I've heard from a lot of people one of the best forms of publicity and building the audience is to get involved and perhaps get the backing perhaps team up with other part casters to attract commercial interest so it's podcasters promoting coasters. That makes perfect sense I mean we as I think everybody who creates podcasts also listens to them so you knew you do this because you love the space and so we need to tame up together to grow the listenership in the audience and to learn how to produce better content as well you can get tips and tricks from from other people Daniels you know someone who's done that and I listen to his show is so he's done some amazing stuff and I've taken a lot of hits from him so. One of the things that's the most powerful way to grow up podcast is word of mouth getting other people talking about your podcast so if you can get working with other pod casters that your cross promoting each other what it's doing is it's building with the trust that someone else has gained in front of their audience or like from my own show when I say Oh you've gotta go listen to such and such podcast it's great Here's why I like it here's why I'm recommending it why I'm talking about it what my audience already trust me and so when they hear me saying I like this podcast I recommend you also check this out then they're more likely to go check that out than if they'd seen that podcast advertised on Facebook or on Twitter or something like that because it comes from someone they already trust and building having a podcast is a great way to build trust because people are listening episode after episode week after week or if you have a daily show day after day listening to you getting to know you. Building that trust toward your recommendations toward your style toward your perspective and do you think this is always going to be space for the let's say the the happy amateur who doesn't want to push the boundaries of the podcasting doesn't want to be necessarily part of a podcasting network they don't maybe want to team up with those they just have the nice that posh and subjects will ice of all definitely because the niche is where the passion is and so if someone is focused on a small niche like using the King's Crest on p.c. Jr example if someone has a podcast about computer games from the eighty's and ninety's which that does exist by the way it's called the upper memory block a friend of mine does that show that is hitting on a niche so they might not be as interested in this mega audience and making millions of dollars from their pockets maybe they're just doing this because they enjoy it they're passionate about it and that's why people subscribe to it so there can still be the potential to build a loyal audience who is extremely passionate because no one else is talking about these old computer games. And that can even be marketable for business because you market remake for King's Quest to that audience they will be all over it you really you market that to like them a podcast and maybe no one is going to care or maybe one person work will care about that so it's all about appealing to the target audience. It's so interesting to hear you 2 discussing a satellite to go back and ask you Daniel something that Mark said which is that I'm sorry that Adam said a bigger problem that he thinks the narrative style of podcasts is the coming thing do you do you feel like. We've seen waves for the styles of podcast like in the early days when it was all geeks It was a podcast and then comedy podcast and technology and education and storytelling and interviews big wave of entrepreneurial interview podcast a couple years ago we're now the big thing is narrative style because serial showed that there's this amazing wave style tell stories in a podcast and with serial n s town and a lot of other shows you have this is the new wave of a style of play cast it's not necessarily to say that this is the direction it's going like all podcasts should be this or they'll die but it's yet one of these other way that not only shows what is capable in the space but also brings with it a new audience of people who are interested in that narrative style so that then they can discover this content and initially and then branch out from there. And and do do any of you have any any sort of demographics can you tell us for example how many people are listening to podcasts and you know what sort of a reach. That the general thing of all of podcasts actually how it's. I don't have any numbers on hand for you right now but what I will say is. Podcasting is continuing to experience growth it's not exponential growth as I think maybe the media is making out to be what we are seeing though is that it's a consistent growth year on year and that's really exciting because it means that it's not a bad right it's not going to come one day and then disappear the next. What we are seeing right now though is a bit of an explosion of podcasting in the media So John you were talking before about s. Town and cereal these kind of blockbuster shows that are bringing new people into the media channel and and as an independent pod cast of myself and somebody who's looking to do this as a business that's really exciting I do have a few statistics rod from the United States 112000000 Americans have listened to a podcast which is significantly up on last year these are the latest numbers about 11 percent rise on last year 42000000 Americans listen to podcasts every week which is 5 times more than go to the movies which is quite a staggering statistic in the u.k. 4700000 adults have listened to a podcast of any kind and those numbers generally are increasing and I assume it's the same in Australia Yeah I think actually a strike has one of the highest penetrations of smartphone density in usage in the entire world and so I would probably argue that Australia is maybe even the high density of pockets listenership than in the u.k. Or the United States and we started earlier audit we kind of joke around a little bit about podcasting versus traditional broadcasting I'm interested Daniel we're not really in competition maybe we overlap a little bit but I think do you agree that there is in the future going to be a place for both oh yeah because the park House will continue to be people literally in their basements who have a message to share and are able to change the world in some way with that message even if it's changing the world for one person at a time. And so the independent pod cast or who invests maybe $50.00 in a microphone or is 70 pounds whatever the conversion rate is and they spend an hour or 2 per week and make a show they can reach an audience and change the world for that audience and that's an audience that may be so small that it's not even affordable for a radio broadcast to consider that because a radio show needs to appeal to a large audience so that the sponsors and advertisers and you know there are all of these considerations with radio and the size of the audience must be a certain size but for the independents for the smaller shows it's really about what's reaching their goals and are they connecting with the audience that they want to so you'll see the pod cast here for the mom entrepreneur as you'll see the pod cast for the Chihuahua dog owners you'll see the pod cast for the Lego fans you'll see podcasts about t.v. Shows that's a huge industry almost every t.v. Show has probably a dozen fan pod cast about it and these are passionate people connecting with other passionate people and many times they don't care about the size of their audience they don't care about monetizing they just care about having fun talking about the stuff that they're passionate about and encouraging other people in the process one of the popular genre is maybe this is a lead rode into something you'll be talking about after 3 o'clock and that is political podcasts and I think that the you know the current climate in the United States encourages docs with the from Presidency those types of podcasts a doing extremely well in perhaps a way that traditional broadcasting cannot do very opinionated podcast as we in broadcasting especially public service broadcasting we try to be down the middle and as impartial as possible but certainly it's given those podcast as those politically leaning podcast as an opening to do something that they are excelling at and achieving the Golden says if nothing else regardless of where you are on the spectrum politically I think we could probably all agree that the current United States president has gotten. More people are interested in and involved in politics so I would say that's a win regardless of where you are in it but yeah with podcasting for one thing in pop casting there is no no filter that has to be in place as long as you properly indicate in the podcast apps whether it's explicit You can say whatever you want which is great in most cases not so great in certain rare cases but you have that platform that you can build an audience you can share what you want you don't have to worry about your advertisers what will they think I mean there are certain times for that but you can run a podcast without any sponsors or advertisers so you can say what you feel the world needs to hear and get a message out there are regardless of where you are on the political spectrum and it's not really about we need diversity or we need more people of this group or anything like that we just need more people to share a message and do it well and communicate regardless so whether you're man or woman or whatever people group or country you're from not shouldn't hold you back from podcasting if you have a message a podcast as I think the best way to share the Pop Cap that message with the world and just in the final couple of minutes oversleep both of you live and breathe podcasting What are you hoping to get out of this week. I want to get inspired I want to be empowered and I think those are the the things that a really that's what everyone's heedful but for me it's. It's kind of like figuring out what is what's next for the business. For me it's connecting with other pod casters discovering these incredibly small niches that people are passionate about because my business isn't helping podcasters I do also need to make some kind of business return from this but that's pretty easy when I'm helping podcasters in this is a podcasting convention for podcasters talking about it's so mad and I know that that's the way it goes so casting heaven for used Oh yeah I will stay up until the wee hours of the night talking with people passionate about their message and podcasting because I love working with other pop casters so when I leave this conference even if I make no return on investment financially I will be so pumped up from the energy here and the enthusiasm and passion I'm just to paint a picture you've been to these kinds of things before it is literally from dawn to dusk and beyond and around the clock I sometimes warn the hotel people at the front desk be prepared for people to be standing in the hallways talking for hours and hours and hours you won't get them to. Gosh. Fabulous to hear you I was going to put you on the squad now I'll do it anyway if Arsenal well swear alive today as a podcast that he would be proud to be associated with our as a podcast Orson Welles could still make that would set the world by its heroes. Oh I think Orson Welles's podcasters that could be amazing the surround him is like short stories he could have a podcast of just he's got a new short story every week or every month because they're. Looking at it from my perspective they're podcast about philosophy and science fiction so there's the world is unless the world and the world would be are you guys so. Thank you all and Peter enjoy the conference thank you very much. Please. This is. It it's 3 o'clock in the b.b.c. News comes from a recent across the top story this hour on the u.s. I'm Raj Shah and we're home. As soon as senior senator John McCain us come off 3 weeks of chemotherapy drug recently diagnosed brain tumor Regardless Senator McCain has found time to host a Facebook photo and give an interview or 281 climb a couple of months with members of his family but he had no time to be in Phoenix Arizona tonight their president Donald Trump will address his campaign style rally since he won the election giving as many supporters the chance to share all with what he says will be closely followed This is no teleprompter driven speaking engagement but pure on a lie on the trail. Hundreds of supporters braved the 100 degree heat to get into the hall and they queued up for several hours to get into the Phoenix Convention Center but there were also a sprinkling of protesters who are here not. So the true groups are we kept apart and and there hasn't been any any trouble to speak of to be perfectly honest but the media are they are on mass alert for any such thing and obviously fascinated to hear what Mr Trump is going to say. And since of course the last time that he spoke off script was to react to the violent events in Charlottesville. And. It sounds as if is making his way slowly to the podium but my goodness with with Donald Trump it will take a couple of minutes for him to drive so I start to speak of if I may be and dollars to I'm just going to say hello to John Nichols has contacts Listen to this Wes us hello John Hello Rod How are you well pleasure to hear you and your not so many states away from from Donald Trump at the moment are you but it's interesting that he's come finally he's come West this is the 1st time he's really come this far west since he won the well during elector in the campaign he went a lot to this region the Phoenix area is a very complex political area it has an extremely large Hispanic population which for a variety of reasons is not enthusiastic about Donald Trump but it also has a very very large population of retirees many of them from parts of the country where Trump ran well and and so Trump has always had a base of support in the Phoenix area plenty of people to fill a rally and I think there's no question of why he's come to Phoenix he's had an incredibly rough couple weeks and I think he wants to be in front of the crowd of people that is cheering very loudly for everything he says. As secretary of Housing and Development across behind I'm just I'm just shaking his hand and welcome him now he's shaking the vice president this is a rally those so there's no there's no particular hurry on the president's part but I think no not at all you know this is this is the style of the thing we may ask ourselves why the president is still giving rallies is there a good answer there's a couple of answers one he likes them he enjoys it and who wouldn't thousands of cheering people. But there's also another answer our media covers his rallies his. Bents of this kind very intensely and so it is a way for him to communicate and he communicates to his base. And he can medicates enthusiastically and this one will be closely watched because we there really is a desire to see where he takes events of this sort in the aftermath of the Charlottesville controversy and and trauma. And as we're watching his playing the Saudi hands for all his courses is listening to the audience and his walling and so you know he's he's good at this by the way because one of the things you have to teach politicians is to hear the applause to let it happen and he's very good at letting the applause happen road testing Ok well let's put a stop to just mention the protests outside. A lot of people in here a lot of people pouring in right now they can get them in whatever you can do fire marshal will appreciate it and I want to thank our great vice president Mike Pence for the introduction and the as well as my friend Dr Ben Carson am and thank you to a very very special man Franklin Graham Reverend Franklin Graham. For leading us in prayer and thankyou to Alvey taking the niece of the great Dr Martin Luther King. It really shows you that a Merica is indeed a nation of faith we know that the well I'm thrilled to be back in Phoenix in the great state of Arizona habit with so many thousands of hardworking American Patriots you know I'd love if the cameras could show this crowd because it is rather an incredible job and it is in Kabul the only it is incredible as everybody here remembers this was the scene of my 1st rally speech right Abbi the crowds were so big almost this biggest tonight that the people said right at the beginning you know the this something special happening here and we went to center stage almost from day one in the debates we love those debates but we went to center stage and we never left right all of them we did it together when you were there at the start you've been there every single day since and I will never forget Believe me Arizona I will never forget the abbot and I'm here tonight to send a message. We are fully legal and totally committed to fighting for our agenda and we will not stop until the job is done the it the this evening. Join together with friends we reaffirm our shared customs traditions and values we love our country we celebrate our troops we embrace our freedom we respect our flag we are proud of our history the we cherish our constitution including by the way the 2nd Amendment or it it wasn't the the unholy . We fully protect religious liberty we believe in long and order and we support the incredible men and women of law enforcement or hit the and we pledge our allegiance to one nation under God the you always understood. What Washington d.c. Did 9 our movement is a movement built on love its love for fellow citizens its love for struggling Americans who've been left behind and love for every American child who deserves a chance to have all of their dreams come true the from the inner cities to the rural outposts from the Sun Belt to the Rust Belt from east to west and north to south our movement is built on the conviction that every American from every background is entitle to a government that puts their needs 1st thought it is finally time to rebuild our country to take care of our people and to fight for the jobs thought our great American workers deserve and that's what we're doing a hit an hour on Abu Dhabi an Abu Dhabi an on the air for our amazing election victory the forgotten men and women remember we used to talk about the forgotten men and women before the election guess what they're not forgotten the anybody anymore the now they're not forgotten anymore folks back to trying to figure you out there saying the obstructionists how do we get them to vote for us. I don't think that's going to happen anytime soon the we believe that every American has the right to live with dignity respect for America demands respect for all of its people loyalty to our nation requires loyalty to each other we all share the same home the same dreams and the same hopes for a better future a wound inflicted upon one member of our community is a wound inflicted upon a saw you saw last night you saw last Did anybody watching last night the an the when one part of America hurts we all heard and when one American suffers and in justice all of America suffers together we're all together it's time for us to follow the example of our brave American soldiers and I was with a lot of them last night Fort Myers the no matter where they come from no matter what faith they practice they form a single unbreakable team that's what we are we're team as a nation were to you they're all united by their devotion to our country and to their mission it's time for all of us to remember that we are all in the same team we are all Americans and we all believe right now in America firsts the it didn't. And it's happening and it's happening fast I see all those red hats and white hats it's all happening very fast it's called Make America Great Again you see what's going on the. It's coming back very fast we want every child to 6 see every community to prosper and every struggling American to have a chance for a better life what happened in Charlottesville strikes at the core of America and tonight this entire Redus is united in forceful condemnation of the thoughts who perpetrate hatred and violence the So the. And I mean truly dishonest people. In the media and the fake media they make up stories they have no sources in many cases they say a source says there is no such thing but they don't report the facts just like they don't want to report that I spoke out forcefully against hatred bigotry and violence and strongly condemn the neo nazi the white supremacist and the k.k.k. The openly called for unity healing in love and they know it because they're all there so what I did the so what I did. Is I thought I take just a 2nd and I'm really doing this more than anything else because you know where my heart is Ok the I'm really doing this to show you how damn dishonest these people are the O'Hare is my 1st statement when I heard about Charlottesville and I have a home in Charlotte for a lot of people don't know here's a 1st can't believe they haven't figured that one out yet now they know now they finally know. But I just I don't want to bore you with this but it shows you how dishonest they are and most of you know this anyway so here's what I said really fast here's what I said on Saturday we're closely following the terrible events unfolding in Charlottesville Virginia this is me speaking we condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred bigotry and violence that's be speakin on Saturday or ot right after the lobby so I'm condemning the strongest possible terms egregious display hatred bigotry and votes Ok I think it can't do much better right Ok but they do want to put this and they had it on initially but then when they talk he didn't say it fast enough he didn't do it on htan Why did you take it day he must be a racist it took a day. Dishonest people. So here's. Here's b I hope they're showing how many people are in this room but they won't they don't even do that the only time they show the Krauts is when there's a disruptor or an anarchist in the room I call a mannequin because believe me we have plenty of anarchists I don't want to talk about the anarchists. So this is me it has no place in America I talk about hatred bigotry and violence it has no place in America what is vital now is a swift restoration of law and order and the protests action of innocent lives No citizen should ever fear for their safety security in our society and no child should ever be afraid to go outside and play or be with their parents and have a good time this is me speaking the author here or here is further this is On Saturday the 1st one I did this 3 times we have to come together as Americans with love for the nation and true affection really and I say this so strongly true affection for each other I didn't say to affection for you and you I said for each other all of us all of us are the. But they don't report it they don't they just let it go above all else we must remember this truth no matter our color. Creed in religion or political party we are all Americans 1st we love our country we love our God we love our flag didn't . Then I went on this my 1st statement and they said remember they said well he wasn't specific enough. Why was it the more specific so my 2nd statement I got really specific and they said why did he do it faster the I'm telling you folks look look I know these people probably better than anybody and a lot of people have a problem with it because look what happens with them if they do a story about me I know if it's honest or false if you're reading a story about somebody you don't know you assume it's honest because it's like the failing New York Times which is like so bad itself. Or The Washington Post which I call a lobbying tool for Amazon Ok that's a lobbying tool for Amazon or c.n.n. Which is so bad and so pathetic and their ratings are going in. The right. Abbott . But all the network I mean c.n.n. Is really bad but a.b.c. This morning I don't watch it much but I'm watching in the morning and they have a little George Stephanopoulos talking to Nikki Haley right Littlejohn. And and he talks about the speech I made less that which believe it or not got great reviews right. They had a hard time on they were having a hard time because it was with soldiers we were somber we were truthful we were doing we were saying things and it really did so he talked about it for like that much then he goes let's get back to Charlottesville Charlottesville and Nikki was great she's doing a great job by the way so now I say we have to heal our wounds and the wounds of our country. I love the people of our country the people all of the people it says I love all of the people of our country I didn't say I love you because you're black or I love you cause you're white or I love you because you're from Japan or you're from China or you're from Kenya or you're from Scotland or Sweden I love all the people of our country the hint so I said. His smile might this is by the way folks this is my exact words on I love all the people of our country we're going to make America great again but we're going to make it great for all of the people of the United States of America he and then they said the is here race is is here right then I did a 2nd one so then I did a 2nd one don't bother it's only a single voice and not a very powerful voice the how did he get in here is supposed to be with a few people outside How about How about all week they're talking about the massive crowds that are going to be outside where. Well it's hot out it is hot and I think it's too warm you know they show up in the helmets and the black man speaks and they've got clubs and they've got everything and teeth. So on August the 14th so that was it and I said all people I love all people everything right now I figure if you do it again I'll be even more specific so I said pacer the events that took place over the last week in a Charles fill I'd like to provide the nation with an update because I was right after the event the 1st right an update on ongoing federal response to the horrific attack and violence that was witnessed by everybody to anyone who acted criminally in this weekend's racist violence you will be held fully accountable justice will be delivered. So I said. Listen to that I said that but they don't show that they don't show or they took they'll take one thing like seriously he was late was the best that he was late so I said to anyone who acted criminally in this weekend's races to violence Ok then I go we must love each other show affection for each other and unite together in condemnation of hatred bigotry and violence we must rediscover the bonds of love and loyalty that bring us together as Americans. Then I said racism is evil today report that I said that racism is evil. You know why because they are very dishonest people so I said racism is evil now they only choose you know like a half a sentence here or there and then they just go on this long Graham page or they put on these really light weights all around a table that nobody ever heard of and they all say what a bad guy I am but I mean you ever see anything and then you wonder why c.n.n. Is doing relatively poorly in the ratings because they're putting like 7 people all negative entropy and they fired your free Lord who are Jeffrey. Jeffrey look I guess he was getting a little bit fed up and he was probably fighting back a little too hard they said we better get out of here we get him back and those who cause violence it is name are criminals and thugs including the k.k.k. Neo nazis white supremacists and other hate groups that are repugnant to everything we hold true as Americans now let me ask you Can it be any better than that in all fairness and you know I mention that but to the best of my knowledge when there was a big problem Barack Obama never said it took place because of radical Islamic terrorists he never said that right he doesn't have to say. You know why because they have a double standard because the media is totally dishonest and they have a double standard you've never heard them say that and in fact if you used the term you get criticized but with me they want to be said I said it and I said it very clearly but they refused to put it on those who spread balance in the name of bigotry strike the very core of America these a mockery words this was on Monday August the 14 so it's Saturday yet Monday and I was going to do one of these every week but you would never get it right in time such is the this America has always shown his true character responding to hate with love division with unity and violence with an unwavering resolve for justice then I finish I said we will defend to protect the sacred rights of all Americans all is capitalized times 5 not cheers you and we will work together so that every citizen every citizen in this pleasant land is free to follow their dreams in their hearts and to express the love and joy in their souls Ok now I mean. They were having a hard time with that one because I said everything I hit him with neo nazi I hit him with everything I got that white supremacist the neo nazi I got them all in there let's say k.k.k. We have k.k.k. I got a mob so they're having a hard time so what did they say right it should have been sooner he's a racist it should have been some Ok so it should have been so then the last one on Tuesday Tuesday I didn't know. We condemn in the strongest possible terms disagree just display of hatred bigotry invalid's it has no place in America. Ought but they also say. That he must be a racist because he never mentioned the driver of the car who is a terrible person drove the car and he killed her and it's a terrible thing but they said I didn't mention So these are my words the driver of the car is a murderer and what he did was a horrible inexcusable thing they said I didn't mention and then they asked me just to finish it they asked me what about race relations in the United States now I have to say they were pretty bad under Barack Obama that I can tell you but but they asked me the question and I said Well I think jobs can have a very big and positive impact I think if we continue to create jobs like I've done over 1000000 since I've been in office on the way over one. I think if we continue to create jobs at levels that I'm creating jobs I think that's going to have a tremendously positive impact on race relations I do I do and the other thing very important I Police wages will start going up because we now have the lowest unemployment rate we've had in 17 years so you're going to see rate is going to hit they haven't gone up for a long time I believe wages now because the economy is doing so well with respect to employment and unemployment I believe wages will start to go up and I think that will have a tremendously positive impact on race relations the one. So that was my words now you know I was a good student I always hear about the elite you know the elite their elite I went to better schools and they did I was a better student than they were I live in a bigger more beautiful apartment and I live in the White House too which is a really great the I think you know what I think with the elites they're not the elites. The the so the point is. And I didn't want to bore you because you understand where I'm coming from you people understand but the point is that those who are 3 different there were 2 Sabers and one news conference the words were perfect they only take out anything they can think of and for the most part all they do is complain but they don't put on those words and they don't put on me saying those words the media can attack me but where I draw the line is when they attack you which is what they do when they attack the decency of our supporters the An you are honest hardworking taxpaying And by the way your overtaxed but we're going to get your taxes doubt it the your tax paying Americans who love our nation obey our laws and care for our people it's time to expose the crooked media deceptions and to challenge the media for their all in 4 men thing divisions and yes by the way. The and yes by the way they are trying to take away our history and our heritage you see that. And I say it and you know we're all pros were all like we have a certain sense. We're smart people these are truly dishonest people and not all of them not all of them you have some very good reporters you have some very fair journalists but for the most part honestly these are really really dishonest people and they're bad people and I really think they don't like our country I really believe that and I don't believe they're going to change and that's why I do this if they would change I would never say it the only people giving a platform to these hate groups is the media itself and the fake news the it the the other so funny look back there the live red lights they're turning those suckers off as out there on the they're turning those lights off as. Like c.n.n. C.n.n. Does not want is falling viewership to watch what I'm saying tonight I can I mean the advantage I have the advantage I have is that we do have a big voice and you know they're always saying like Twitter or social media if I didn't have social media I would be able to get the word out I probably wouldn't be standing here right I probably would be saying. If I don't have social media I probably would not be standing and he ever notice when I go on and I'll put like out a tweet or a couple of tweets he's in a Twitter storm again I don't do Twitter so you know you put on a little tweet I'm going to be with the veterans today they'll say Donald Trump is in a Twitter storm these are sick people you know the thing I don't understand. You would think you would think they'd want to make our country great again and I honestly believe they don't I honestly believe that if you want to discover the source of the division in our country look no further than the fake news and the crooked media the which would rather get ratings and clicks than tell the truth. I mean The New York Times has written some stories how about this the New York Times essentially apologized after I won the election because their coverage was so bad and it was so wrong and they were losing so many subscribers that they practically apologize I would say they did they say well it wasn't really that much of an apology because they were losing so many people because they were misled and I figured this is great and for about 2 weeks I got good coverage then they reverted back and they're worse than ever before you know it's like one of those the Washington Post is terrible but these are dishonest but let me tell you you have some great honest papers you have some great networks I must tell you Fox has treated me fairly The authors of the oughtn't they've treated me fairly Ok I'll let you know you know what some day they might not treat me fairly and I'll tell you about it Ok but they've treated me fairly and I don't mean all good I get plenty of bad on Fox too but at least it's within reason and Hannity how good his how did he say the author how good his hand an and he's a great guy and he's an honest guy. And Fox and Friends in the morning is the best show and it's the absolute it most on the show. And it's a show I watch not only does I'll put those cameras are going off oh wow why don't you just fold them up and take them home. Oh those cameras are going off. The wow that's the one thing they're very nervous to have me on live television because this can happen and now you know what I'm a person that wants to tell the truth I'm an honest person and what I'm saying you know is exactly right not only does the media give a platform to hate groups but the media turns a blind eye to the gang violence on our strays The Fair years of our public school the destruction of our wealth at the hands of the terrible terrible trade deals made by politicians our children never been allowed to be politicians. And the unaccountable hostility against our incredible police who work so hard and such a dangers the my administration is committed to the idea that all Americans have the right to live in safety security and peace we believe in the rule of law because we know that freedom cannot exist if our people are not safe and how safe are you at a trump rally the. Remember to be getting remember when this already started when this started at the beginning they used to send in thugs did swing on people are tougher than them so it wasn't always very good for them but that send in thugs and our people would protect themselves and then you'd go home and he'd watch his violence see this room you've got people outside but not very many but see this room you're safe in this room you're very safe an epic room on the most sacred duty of government is to protect the lives of its citizens and that includes securing our borders and enforcing our immigration laws. . Was Sheriff Joe convicted for doing his job that's what the. The he she should know how to jury but you know what I make a prediction I think he's going to be just fine Ok Oh Ok . But. I won't do it tonight because I don't want to cause any controversy is that Ok the Orion the. But Sheriff Joe could feel good the people of Arizona know the deadly and heartbreaking consequences of illegal immigration the lost lives the drugs the gangs the cartels the crisis of smuggling and trafficking m.-s. 13 with throwing them out so fast they never got thrown out of anything like this we are liberating towns out on Long Island will liberate it can you imagine in this day and age in this day and age in this country we are liberating towns this is like from a different age we are taking these people they don't shoot people because it's too fast and not painful they cut them up into little pieces these are animals we are getting a Matty here with thrown him in jail so what thrown him out of the country we're liberating our town the you've seen it you've lived. And you elected me to put a stop to it and we are doing a phenomenal job of putting a stop to it that I can tell you the after years of defending other countries borders can you believe we fight for the countries we want to defend the borders we're finally defending our own borders the and we're showing compassion for the struggling American workers who are now starting to see the light because plants are coming pouring back into our country and by the way we're doing a lot of good to Ark and that but a lot of people are coming back in we have Foxconn they make the i Phones as you know for Apple and so many companies are building now in our country. Including the auto companies who are coming back. Years of uncontrolled immigration have placed enormous pressure on the jobs and wages of working families and they've put great burdens our local schools and hospitals while this may be good for a handful of special interests it's unfair to working people of all backgrounds all throughout our country we want every American community to succeed including our immigrant communities but they can't do that if we don't control our borders the earlier today I visited with the incredible men and women of ice and the Border Patrol during a visit to Yuma sector I was over at the human sector it was hot like $115.00 degrees I'm out signing autographs for an hour I was there that was a hot day you learn if you're in shape if you can do that believe me and they actually told me actually sir it's relatively cool today can you believe but it was great and I met with the Border Patrol and I met with ice and these are incredible people the job they do. The and in fact General Kelly who was in charge of homeland security where people coming in down 78 and almost 80 percent he did so good I made him my chief of staff writer. John was young where is the where is General Kelly get America he's great story great. But we did a lot before anything happened we did a lot we respect and cherish our ice officers. And our border patrol agents and we respect and cherish our police officers and our fire Man Oh and all of our uniformed services the but during that visit I heard firsthand from the frontline agents about the security threats they confront each and every day and I pledge my continued resolve to them and all of you to keep our country safe all around the nation I have spent time with the wonderful Americans whose children were killed for the simple reason that our government failed to enforce our immigration laws already existing laws. And I promise these families the deaths of their loved ones will not have been in vain I promise them I know so many of the one by one we are finding the gang members the drug dealers and the criminals who prey on our people we are throwing them out of the country or we're putting them the hell fast in jail the we are cracking down on these sanctuary cities that shield criminal alley and finally the. And we are building a wall on the southern border which is absolutely massive So I'm going to try to build that wall built wall I it's a little bit difficult here but I could hear it in my house and I hope you will agree that we have been fair to Donald Trump in the south giving him 53 well take off what 6 minutes I'm die doing it all Trump will say we've given him 47 minutes so far broadcasting time in this hour for his rally speech in Phoenix Arizona. John Nichols is still with us and we just had a rambling of time on the media and in particular on the various accounts of what Mr Trump said on various days after the attack child's photo which resulted in the death of a woman and indirectly in the deaths of 2 policemen who were attempting to police the rally in a helicopter Let's bring John Nichols back because I did I'd have to say John I did notice when he was reliving the statement he managed to miss out the name of the woman who was killed entirely he didn't mention Heather here at all he did mention Heather. Yeah there was a point where he referenced Heather I don't think he said her last name you know I'm right it was in the midst of a much broader line but I'm pretty sure he did. Well in that case highlights I'm glad that. It. Is difficult to frame a question but the president of the United States is a unite and. The president of the United States President Trump accused the media pretty much didn't he of being that uniting factor of the moment it was a remarkable it was a remarkable and I think the only fair word to use is propaganda stick speech or it has been so far and I say that because the president clearly came with an intent of blaming the media for dividing the country for creating the incredible tensions and pain that developed after the violence and in Charlotte but in doing so he didn't give a. Complete reading of the circumstances in the controversy rather he gave a very selective reading from his statements he never referenced the fact that he got in a lot of initial blowback even from his fellow Republicans for suggesting that the violence was on both sides that it was you know that there was sort of a shared responsibility between well this was a this was a crucial race which he missed wasn't it was when he was repeating the statement he didn't he didn't mention the on many site which he said he also did not mention. That after it's you crazy correctly quoted himself into crying racism and criticizing you nazis and white supremacists but But what he didn't mention is that he got in a lot more trouble even with his own supporters a good day or the next day the next day on the n.r.a. When he sort of to again assign blame to all sides and used what has become the most controversial line of all the notion that very fine people were marching with the white supremacists. And and if he had to address that if he had brought up those controversial lines and said look they really took me out of context or they misinterpreted what I was saying here is what I was trying to say. Then it might a bit of I think a very significant address but by leaving those things out. He really diminished I think he diminish his own effectiveness tonight except with the crowd in the room of course the crowd in the room was everything he wanted highly responsive and and I know you're right get to this so I don't to jump ahead of you here but of course it built up to the you know sort of the the old cement line which was. Essentially announcement that he intends to pardon sure Joe Arpaio Joe Arpaio let's just briefly summarize for everybody just so we all know. Sheriff Joe Arpaio who we've had on this program who is known for his very tough lines with with his president. And then particular for the way that he treated them in his jails was convicted of what is known as I think is a misdemeanor conviction for contempt whereby he continued. To arrest people who were who had not committed a specific violation except that they had violated the immigration law and for that point there was no legal basis for his actions and for those he was can convict of of this misdemeanor criminal contempt is not about right it's basically right he's no longer the sheriff. But he has you know continued to be you know a great deal of trouble because actions that he took he was convicted last year criminal contempt of court and that's a pretty big deal that's saying that a share of. Himself engaged in a criminal act and that was you know a refusal to respect an order by a judge it's a big deal and it doesn't happen very often. Now the president appears to be suggesting I mean he didn't formally announce it but he hinted incredibly strong least strongly. That he intends to pardon Joe Arpaio now he said he didn't want to do it because he didn't want to cause controversy. And it's an interesting thing because if he were to pardon Opata Arpaio at a rally like this. Yeah I think it would be it would it would overwhelm everything else he was trying to do so you know it's a but again with Donald Trump he can't always control themselves so that he can't will I suspect be as powerful as if he had announced it. John believe it John the cols thank you so much. Will follow this in just a few minutes time just coming up one minute past. This. And a new house away from across the top story this hour of the u.s. Present Donald Trump as many things on his plate with this part of the Republicans he has to craft a tax reform bill which will fulfill His promises to reduce taxes perhaps simplify the system he has to. Make sure that the courts actually implement his immigration policies which are now under challenge and he has to follow through on his ideas of changing the way that America trades with its partnership farming NAFTA and dealing with what he has identified as a gross trade imbalance with China tonight is find the time to make an election rally here in Phoenix Arizona. And as we come back to you he's still actually speaking and he's taken on terrorism and he's taken on immigration as he was doing just as we were leaving mentioning a visit that he paid earlier today to the Border Patrol but before that. He was in full flow against the mainstream media for their accounts of his presence in particular for their accounts of his several speeches after the violence at a rally a white supremacist rally and schollers for oh no last weekend weekend before and. In a rambling rant he went through statements after the trouble written on a piece of paper this was familiar to anyone who had seen some of his later speeches but emitted a famous phrase and we'll explain that in just a minute when we hear a little bit of what he had to say what happened in Charlottesville strikes at the core of America and tonight this entire Redus is united in forceful condemnation of the thoughts who perpetrate hatred and violence. And. But the very dishonest media those people right up there with all the care and. So the. And I mean truly dishonest people in the media and to think media they make up stories they have no sources in many cases they say a source says there is no such thing but they don't report the facts just like they don't want to report. Then I spoke out forcefully against hatred bigotry and violence and strongly and they are not the white supremacists and the k.k.k. . Was just a portion of what President Trump had to say he also veered quite close to making a public pardon of the i.r.s. On a Sheriff Joe Arpaio who was convicted of a criminal contempt but he he very much stopped short of doing that although he asked the room do people in the room the hall meeting like Joe and I can see that now he has actually stopped talking and is just oh he's shake Yeah he's he's he's returned to the podium I don't think he has stopped talking I have to say. You can still hear his voice the back road so that there are many many strands of this of this particular speech which we've covered or at least we've allowed it to be on on air in the last hour or so and Taylor Griffin is with us I worked under George Bush in the White House it would be worth saying that the mayor of Phoenix Arizona asked Mr Trump to stay away feeling violence there are hundreds of protesters outside. And Taylor is with us and I was the editor or roughly explain dot com tell I find this quite difficult to discuss because at the moment we're we're still in the middle of the speech the aren't we it could be the middle of a speech yeah we are but we can kind of predict where this thing winds from here this is the typical Trump Donald Trump stump speech we're hearing here I started where you know the classic you're within a minute or 2. Talking about how big the crowd size is. And then we went right and about a 30 minute sort of unhinged diatribe on the attacking the media and you know they were talking about the border wall and how Congress can get anything done I mean it's very typical Trump speech and I think it's really interesting rod when you listen to this speech and he was in the speech last night where Trump once on some other relevant teleprompter announcing the increase of troops to Afghanistan is very serious very thoughtful very conventional looks like a normal president and then you have tonight where you have this unhinged while chomping at the rally it's almost like a tale of 2 trumps and you know I've got this theory that there is said you know what behave yourself Monday night in this speech on Afghanistan and go and do a speech and at a rally and say whatever you want I will a going to have fun I mean he does it he does work a crowd successfully It works his crowd very successfully it's very difficult though to forget that you are watching the president of the United States speaking with the food with oratory office office 30 minutes attacking the newsman he. Was just donning you never heard of President United States doing that so this is a very different president. He. I don't want to labor the point but. He quickly got to trade deals what he calls the destructive trade deals the creation of jobs many many statements which will of course be be fact checked in the course of the next day or so and. But but the argument goes over well doesn't it the psychology here is probably what we should be paying attention to that that Mr Trump understands the frustration of the people who are in the hall who are looking for so much from him that's absolutely right and you know the Trump phenomenon was about bringing somebody from outside Washington a businessman right who understands my problems somehow in those a billionaire but people feel like that this is a guy that understands them this is a guy that was in their living room once a week on The Apprentice and they feel like they know and have an attachment. And this was going to be what's going to fix the country and the issue is is that that populist firebrand message that shoot from the hip style they got him elected that said there were going to be simple answers to all of these difficult questions that our country faces. Did not translate into a presidency and into policy and that's where you get the whole dishonest media thing because you need some reason that he has not had the successes that he's promised Obamacare was an appeal. The old the war border wall still isn't built in and you know he didn't get the ban on immigration that he wanted I mean a lot of what he's done has not kind of come to fruition a lot of what he's promised hasn't come to fruition so now we're kind of talking about the media's lying and we're bragging about jobs numbers which are actually almost identical all fact check that right now because I've done the numbers on it you know in the last 6 months of Brock Obama's presidency there were 1840000 jobs 1040000 jobs created something like that there were I'm sorry 1.81.08000000 jobs and in the 1st 6 months of Trump's presidency was 1070000 jobs so you're basically talking about you know almost exactly the same as Obama and so this is sort of a narrative that he's weaving to keep his supporters excited. The. One of the things he painted for his for the people and for people listening and watching him on television was that by going after illegal immigrants that the whole social fabric of America is going to be changed a lot of people who were. Apparently. You know doing very bad things are now in jail waiting deportation. These are quite difficult things to test on except that we have an awful lot of evidence and a lot of anecdotal about people who are law abiding taxpaying illegal immigrants who have been very easily deported by the Border Patrol who wouldn't qualify as gangsters or are behind home. As Mr Trump would say that it's a very very selective view again isn't it of the policies which I know being pursued. And you know I think for his base you know deporting anybody you seriously going to burgle was a game annoy you equally in and that's something that they want to see and you know honestly the Obama administration is doing a lot of deportations when Trump's stepped it up that was one of his promises but look it's not nowhere near what he promised when he was being elected you know I mean he was talking about you know deporting all love a 1000000 people who are in the country he legally and you know now that he's present when you're sitting in the Oval Office that looks a little different that's not something that's very feasible to do I have to just jump in and say that Mr Trump has just said I think we'll probably end up terminating nuff to some point I don't think we'll make a deal this is the North American free trade associations have been used to the people who are actually trying to renegotiate right now and who renegotiation last week. My eyes just popped out of my head I'm just that's says that's is substantially bad I think and one that I thought was put to bed you know the story around this North American Free Trade Agreement is the desire culture secretary Sonny Perdue showed him a map where all the farmers who were going to be killed by. Ending after and they were all in Trump States and decided that you know maybe you wouldn't go forward with ending NAFTA and I think that's something that. Well we'll see what happens I don't know if it's something you can do unilaterally think that Congress will have a say in it and I think that American businesses was very excited. To where we are we are just going to have to. Pry loose this political rally goes on Mr Trump as is clearly. A wonderful time. And we just don't know what's going to come next we'll we'll make a decision at some point whether we hear any more of him but if we have one more minute there's something really important on the Joe Arpaio thing and yet heartening Sheriff Joe you know he basically said I'm going to pardon sure. I mean he said I'm not going to do it tonight because I don't want the controversy but I'll predict that Joe's going to be just fine and that is a big red meat for his base right there. Telegraphing as his and. It continues to unfold and pose lots of fascinating challenges for the poor social good have to write this all up in the end thank you very much indeed thank you. Well we'll I'm we'll hope to come back turned sort of a summary of what's happened here but I can't I can't at this stage. Guarantee it such as the unpredictable nature of 24 hour news and Stead we're going to change change course dramatically and go to India where the Supreme Court has banned the practice of instant divorce and a 3 to 2 majority if I think the court has ruled that the practice is unconstitutional royal time and joins us from Kolkata Roe What's this all about. This is to do with the concept of triple that existed within the Muslim community here and I want that was Rod was very simple the lock is a word that means divorce and under the law as it was until the Supreme Court decision yesterday a Muslim man could basically say to his wife divorced 3 times and that was all he needed to do in a number of cases with the development of social media we had seen some Muslim men just using whatsapp and sending a message or using Facebook or even doing it over Skype and that left many women destitute because the children were then taken from them and they had no rights when it came to property or income excess so over the last few years a group of 5 Muslim women have been to the courts in India and said look this is against our constitutional right to equality as women and in a case which I think has huge implications not just for the Muslim community but for the way that India is going to look at it secular future maybe move towards a uniform civil code the judges in 30 to 3 to 2 which I think shows you how contentious and how much debate there has been over the years on this issue agreed with the woman the one of the judges went on record to say that he didn't think that when it came to personal Mathes the court should have precedent over what is religious law and what complicates this issue even more is that many Muslims say that triple the law doesn't exist within Sharia law you don't have it in Pakistan you don't have it in Bangladesh you don't have it in most Muslim countries as well so on the one hand the court had to look at the Constitutional rights secondly they had to look at Islamic law and whether this was permitted within it. Still an extraordinary idea to get a header and listen to. Just divorced his wife by telling her 3 times. Very much so and it was a practice that was taking place now the Muslim personal law board which had opposed the courts getting involved in this issue also a opposes the concept of triple a lot but they say that if reform is to take place on what is as you said a concept that many people many Muslims have found very difficult to get their heads around that he said that it is something that should take place within India's 180000000 Muslims themselves rather than being imposed on the courts I also think we're going to see a number of other cases on other issues now this is to do with you know the number of wives that people could have it's also to do with inheritance and it's been interesting that the government of Mr Modi has played a big role in triple the law even in his speech on the 70th anniversary of independence day just a few days ago you mentioned triple the log there and what he was going to do to help Muslim women so you know I think on the one hand we're going to have a government and a court system that's going to have to implement something that many Muslims may still continue with and on the other hand we may have a series of other cases that could be coming up that look at other aspects of India's Jule civil code. So. This this particular change in the law is final Is there any appeal likely against this. No I don't think so because this is gone to the Supreme Court and we'll have to wait and see the Muslim personal law board will meet in a few weeks time to decide what stance they're going to take on this but I think it's going to be difficult for them to move legal opinion on this political case and this is also become a hugely political issue as well you know in the recent elections and with the bread that India's largest state Mr most of these party is one that doesn't. And polled particularly well amongst Muslims because he's seen as a Hindu nationalist leader but because of his stance on this particular issue he did get a fair number of women's votes from within the Miss Muslim community as well and some are saying it's slightly ironic that a man who is seen as a Hindu nationalist not particularly favorable towards the Muslims is the one who seems to be pushing through a change that many Muslim women want to happen in this country. In Kolkata thank you very much Rahul England will face New Zealand in the women's World Cup final in Belfast the Saturday the black triumphed over the USA 45 to 12 in their semifinal while England beat France on choose and this was the game full time. And I believe Karen said to tell you I don't like the number 18 finish it off final still with the conversion a little 20 pounds train the most mature composed performance you would see me that he was wearing a white shirt with a red rose on it even into the World Cup final after they've beaten fronts $24.00 to $3.00 while Ricky Serrano is a New Zealand sports broadcaster and she joins us live from our current to tell us a bit more about New Zealand beating USA Hello Ricky. Well I good you are you as excited as the British sports broadcaster Sunday out of Les are. Your team getting into the final. Look at this morning it's very early hours of the morning for us that see me finally. There's a pretty good feeling about the black citizens and and the level of coverage that studying to get the manner of the a performance the tries they scored particularly against the USA and the semifinal but I think way and I know that realistically that engenders going to be one heck of a far and that final Di I tell New Zealand early in this year when they came out here and played and they were excellent the young women are one big challenge away but yeah there is this starting to to get a really good feeling you know and a lot of excitement about this woman's World Cup which is fabulous to say well yeah . Woodman who scored for a try. She scored 4 tries and this meant she scored 8 tries and the opponent she gets home Kong when you see and scored over 100 points she is a phenomenal and she is fast she's feeling she's sorry strong she can see in with one hand switch the ball into the other and find the other why she's a great person as well really really nice person great and that's a different sport she's an interesting character and who have father was an all black Her uncle was an all black so she's got rugby in the veins but she started out as many young women here playing netball she played and now see me professional competition a few years ago before making the photon's switch to rugby and really and see that as we she's probably made 9 The most she was part of al so we made a winning team at the Rio Olympics last year but as one of the players who has sort of crossed over by Stevens and such danger she has played a bit above but she is absolutely a lick tripped him. To watch the fish go to get USA this morning was something couse So yeah New Zealand back line it has got plenty of stars among them to watch and she is probably thinking of all of the. English of course replaying the tape more than they were looking for ways to to block her and and stop How do you feel. The English line is going to respond. Oh good luck the ball gets the ball gets good luck we're England as I said I came out here earlier this year during the Lions series the it was also for Tame Women series with England Australia trying actions as well as with and win New Zealander in Canada actually did come as well so they were 4 and lose one that competition that that you Zealand and the final shot and what binds teams having been on base and and they really did that up front I mean it doesn't sound like a regulation that's where that's where it stops and that's where the winning of the game was but but Musea New Zealand were powerless to stop England from the forwards really got rolling by mold exceptionally well and New Zealand just could not get the ball like could not get the ball out wide and I couldn't stop England I know you glean more the coach of the blacks in the Tain I have been working since that series and Joe very very had on the forward ply and has a passion that the final might play out as it is it would be in New Zealand and finding ways to stop at such the ainus is on New Zealand and the forwards to to really from top against England and be able to get that back line moving to get it to Porsha woodmen the fullback. As another to watch Killie brazier in midfield side I've got pace and power and everything out the backs but I've got to do it up front . And what about a New Zealand generally I mean are they interested in the in the World Cup of rugby the Women's World Cup you. Look we're rugby mad nation as I'm sure you know. You might have heard. And it's getting. The women's game is starting to grow and like many of the of major women's teams cricket is and it will as I've always enjoyed a pretty good profile and and he is getting there and a lot of people are getting and really supporting them across the tournament the times are in sometimes makes it a little bit difficult for us as I say early hours of the morning with some of the matches but New Zealand rugby is doing a really good job with promoting promoting them providing video providing content for media who aren't over these so they're getting a lot of coverage through the major media outlets which is great to say I guess the case has regardless of what happens in the final whether that carries on beyond this tournament and that's what those of us people cover and follow a lot of the women's teams and women's sports would like to say but you know we will have a good try it doesn't matter who scores it it can be a been Smith and it can be Portia what men are if it looks good will take. Ok gridlocks like you very much for talking to us thanks very much. Joining us from New Zealand this morning it's half past 4. Why do you feel this is b.b.c. 5 Live. About who've been positioned behind barriers maybe 3040 meters from the stage on this plaza directly outside it's a mobile arena and they started singing 1st of all just half a dozen or so off them but then it gathered momentum all around saying move to press move the press in other words move the media get the media out of the way they've come here to see the 2 fighters and couldn't see anything because of arms elbows and cameras so they felt cheated by that and they were really quite angry Mayweather was 1st on the stage in Qana McGregor comes here completely captures the mood of the crowd goes on to the center of the stage gets introduced immediately walks off exits on his own no one around on his own free there in front of any prompting from any p.r. Executive or anybody to do with a promotion and goes wandering around the outer edges of these barriers and having selfies and shaking hands and just have knowledge of the people who turned out here in this blistering heat just after midday or into the early part of the afternoon now because traditionally unfashionably they turn up late but my weather was just followed all the way around by hordes and hordes of cameramen but really as I say captured the mood of the fans here and absolutely no question about who the people's favorite the people champion is here and we're actually standing next to our 7 story car park where there is a little bit of a show you were standing among some fight trees it's 56 think the sandwiches there in the shy and just a just the highlight what this Parliament's offense is like there's a perimeter fence that goes all the way around where we are primes East on 1522950 meters long and what there is markings you know there's an 8 foot path between one French and the 2nd French and that's that that's the land that's the people's land on our great got inhabited he went in there so there was no want to round it always go almost the same thing straight. 1000 people he was slapping and he was doing everything you're not meant to do in your own not very tough over $700000000.00 But short of taking the buy your kids you know buddy buddy I'm posing for selfies. And suddenly they came alive and that's what he did yeah he converted neutrals in that crowd I think another important factor here Steve we've been talking in the build out for weeks and weeks and enough 1st from here yesterday how we are not going to be bunched in our view of how the fight is going to pan out and who's going to win but what you have to be clear about is that from what we've just seen here in the last half an hour Khan American towns belong in the big states he's obviously used to the big stories this is no rabbit in the headlights this is his stage this is his platform and that was clear over the last half an hour as he was getting urgings urgings from broadcasters and and promoters as to what he should be doing as you say he just wandered off on his own went to see the people and gave them what they were complaining they didn't care for my thinking was it was you know this now we can all take him through it's very occupied with like she always looking out if you think Floyd realized nobody could see these before it realized what was that was it just a bad case of getting it done what's your gut feel sure you're not in the mix there with your hat on or you sort of Blues Brother free at the moment that yeah that's what I was one guy I blew that good I'm hoping there's a lot of things that I apologize that's close but one of those problems. Rather than 3 is because telling me what I would as a player you saying I'm a bit lay on the say No you're still going to have a look at me for going psycho. So let's go to criticize your crying about I'm about 25 degrees cooler than you are. But I just wonder why you want to cause you actually in the small muscles to be and move them around do you sense that he realized that no one could see him and the people who are quite upset now because he had this. Retinue of bodyguards all around him and I tried to count them on stage but they were shifting here and there they are huge huge men men so big by the way that he won't let them fly on his own private jet he's got a 2nd jet when he flies anywhere he's got a 2nd jet and he makes sure that the bodyguards fly on the 2nd day because he's got this strange perception about flying and he believes that back kind of bulk cannot be lifted by a smaller jet like that so he has another jet specifically for his bodyguards but to get back to the point they were encircling him on the stage and they were letting 2 or 3 cameramen and reporters in when they came out they were letting another 2 or 3 back in so from their point of view it was all very cleverly and specifically managed but he couldn't see any of what was going on a nor could he hear what the Clearly Khana McGregor who was offstage of that's the example that could hear and picked up on that but I wonder whether if the roles had been reversed to make an hour here they are as fans of the system and wrestling the trees here they're just getting a regular corner because not dull but they spoke to the cold cold group of traveling Irish and he stayed like he might do one of those things that we've seen over the years with their front porches and they might be here for another hour and a half 7 and want to that would be from. This in the middle of the hump he's now come back he's come back towards the cameras and I was coming I was coming I was just as we come by standing behind the stage where most of the formalities took place within the last couple of hours or so now the camera is starting to make them right backward steps and I might well come over here although you start there being marshals in another direction now but that is the man who is just milking every part of this what I could update your story because I'm right on top of your forget the club is not him having a spat with pulmonology only a shelf of 3 things come back to come from Foley polies Mikey's might is right over the off the over bother primitives. The charcoal is as you say of a fly pulmonology somewhere over there that now if it were actually take off a ship like a wolf those are going to take a closer look at all these we want as I mean are you going to see polio you can see the still about 500 people there and I'm told Holy Spirit all right surrounded by maybe 1st of all 40 members of the press filming in good hands good now yeah I can still say I'm sorry I just disappeared and if I said at the time but then how does just join the search for me you actually follow Can I understand then just quickly did you see what happened there yes and what will tell us what happened then Oh I think we'll learn a few things to get off his chest obviously this this this some needle between the 2 and I mean this morning from this very set up a match between these 2 guys I've been working with for the last couple of days and he's very animated about how this morning went down obviously your opinions are polar opposites you know and this is this is going to set up a massive fight between between the Gregory and Paula we're going to see it in New York on some Patrick's Day he's going to be the new and I did write on about June 24th 29th from 5 life and back then you were talking about how it was a big ass Yukon of the have you become slightly more confident since then that that was a long time ago from. Now you know I still think it's a very very it's a fight for moments now I mean you know the statement is made whether by decision of course you know I'm just here to try and give it give a balanced perspective because we can't count Connor out you know and I think that there are certain things that favor him obviously switching to the towns because he's going to be a key in this fight as well you know smaller gloves the high be on from a whether you have to sneak through the guard for one or so you know it's an interesting question here stories thing that Colonel MacGregor the people's champ he just he sensed that there was no anger in the crowd but there was a bit of frustration that they were getting to see him a way that he didn't even barely knowledge them yet and yet he went on these walkabout and it was just my you know he was the commies preacher and you know this is the difference between a guy and it was it was 4 years ago collecting benefits check my God it's been a pro for 20 years you know he's so easy to forget where you've come from I was. 2 decades where is Connor knows where he came from he grew up with these people there in this crowd so why would you not going to see them and I mean personally I think it was a security hole until they could have the traditional media back but at the same time there's that consciousness of where the funds are and what they really want to be from that what's that thing that you do inside the USA where you meet the fans or not or couple of months before what is that that's something that Dana White inherited when he bought the company's explain what happens with that is just it's just a way of getting the funds to you know it's a bit of face time with the fighters you know this is the beauty of mixed martial arts is that the fights are still accessible you know you can you could tweak you can Instagram you can contact these guys but to get them face to face fight week is amazing because you get see the emotion on the faces you get to see them when they're at this height of preparation. And listen thanks very much and they would hope it will grab you later when that we're going to be somewhere comfortable down its tanks that speak to me before the knowledge is still surrounded up a little bit trying to up probably can we do a bit of thought live while our well. Paul is talking a lot of different people but big fights all of it I wish you know security grab me from behind the wall you pull that one yes no you know really it's so as you can see it's a bit as you can sense is. There will get a workout as well there on the front of the Spirit yet if you're in a similar still grab it holy. He's one of the In fact he's with the m.m. Ice Choctaw at the moment might tell you everything like connections with me because I was it was going to affect just the name without Oh my dearest I mean it's almost that So you know the arena only stupid Supreme Court actually voted most Saturdays to meet that we should look at them and I when they were we're not in the training camp House to bring them Saturday you might want to pack your lunch your pack your shoes your pack your cup your pack your balls to the kinds of get those who are you sure you know no phenomena nothing will happen they are exactly nothing else I was trying to grab body is managed often taken aside so he could speak privately and I want to tell him I would basic trying to tell him I was low I was an unnecessary No I don't want to get found his way he's got the media scrum it's his weak it's there fighting I want to get away I'll try to grab bring my side inside and base I was telling him I was you know when you guys there was unnecessary I said you know that was unfair you know that was law and he basically defended say Nono you talk to your contract don't have to talk about my contract us posted pictures I wasn't talking before the pictures are posted you have posed the pictures and you force the media to rush to me and then I had to found myself oh you know nobody talked to media before the cunt before that just opposed to you knew about you was going research and yeah I know it was ridiculous it's the most ridiculous and I've had so many tougher sparring sessions like this the most ridiculously overrated sponsorship that was seen as a lesser baby certainly. Fairly. Wealthy looks like he's about to make his rule and I won't say really on he he wouldn't call some medical you're on their way you know you could come up with. More of a phone my microphone but my 1st minutes I said would speak to someone from the u.f.c. I did not I just didn't think it would be like that and said we sprayed the pole in my login No I just didn't think it would be like that let's go back to the shy Mike and I'll fight chase for juicy because number is great he says all this stuff out there and he said slowly we'll be radioactive $25.00 past 3 so much money so I just didn't stand a chance going to be sick that he chose to die to go on the run with. Him when he was treated. And I was happy to make all that. But I'm not quite sure this is a 4 there's always a full Well I didn't explode cause just take some of the things that were bugs or whatever the form of ending really kind of some are just. So it's worthy of that I'm not quite sure which whatever what if she try a formal beginning. And the bad thing is I'm not sure if that Hardy and I have friends I think about about the same and about 5000000 mixed martial arts where the sense is a bit of romance going on there you know if we did there was then I love them and that's what happens on Twitter people films get blown out so seeing 2 very contrasting grand arrivals both of them talking points let's get it right come a grabber absolutely we're only in that expression and I'm not usually use it but you know and that's my biggest irony you know I did and I think what we've seen here today and this is going to be relayed around the country on television he's a real soon jumping off point surge in the hype around the 5 I know we were saying that after those 4 tights 2 in the States one in Canada one in when you stayed in the London or Wembley Arena in London should I say that then you know that the hype probably couldn't be ratcheted up anymore but I'm fine with here and we've definitely seen here in the last 2 or 3 hours that this season has been you know you turned to me and me to give us a finish and say the 1st time it was people here now it's it's happening now well it's the end of the end of day 2 for us here. Day 3 will be the it will be the red carpet Listen to this will be the red carpet where we speak to everybody again all the guys who didn't get to die and then it will be to head to head conference and that's sort of in the people I've been talking about since June Mike and I I take a lot of interest in these final ha press conferences I mean going back now 10 years to when. And I better for Ricky Hatton here you remember after the final had a press conference that. Ricky Hatton run his finger across his throat making me sick trying to gesture and then of course everybody misinterpreted Oh yes in some cases interpreted correctly you know why he was just starting to lose his cool what to treat Mike what can I say you go yeah you have got to show up last Miss Yates it's only afternoon the sum is still out is probably about a 100 and we do we want to do and we will be back with. Some are. Seen that's me thanks for listening while I was so exciting was there that was Steve Bronson my Costello as he just said and if you like that more tomorrow. Back in the world where or where nobody's throwing punches for money and we're getting reports 1st of all from Reuters but also from a fellow called Hunter Walker who is White House correspondent for Yahoo News. And pictures of smoke grenades being let off outside of that trump rally in Phoenix Arizona just saying that people are screaming this is a quote from him he says police are gassing the crowd and running and people are screaming this is not a riot so the. The reporting at the moment that we're seeing is suggesting that the Phoenix police ran into the crowd to try to clear a way for people to come out of the Trump rally when it was all over and quite heavy handed there's just a little bit of noise in the back you know that's the side from outside. But. The. Time I can't tell whether chanting it was distance but we'll have a clearer picture of this no doubt when reporters are able to come to the microphone which will be an. 5 Live breakfast I'm quite sure here on 5 Live So let's finish tonight with something silly to be perfectly honest it's not silly for the Australia Zoo but they want to know what you call a white koala for the arrival of an extremely rare white koala Joey is not all beetle but he's got extremely pale coloring to Utah recessive gene and Alex also joins us from this tell us who Hello Alex Probably Rod how I am very well very relieved to talk to have to say you must be thrilled a role quite little bit yeah go through it's a koala story well. That's like I know she's beautiful she's really really different and we're very excited to have that she's got insta famous you know we had a couple of days to close also call young joy so I thought that was Congress Yeah well that birth must repeal so they both have kept so they have both but they 1st have Joey Well it's absolutely splendid and there was no indication was the baby was going to be quite naughty there wasn't so I had my thought she had sort of Joey's a little bit on the pile of side with the coloration before but never this talk of really quite wide coloring and it's especially on usual because she's not an albino as you probably know or l.b. And I have read all eyes and pink Nars like there's nothing on them that that sort of is has any color including you know Brown a blue eyes so she's just why it's really unusual. So people sending you their suggestions for what to call or. They always think getting a miles from all over the world today our inbox is a flooded here this is a we've had suggestions coming in from every single country with some really creative sort of meanings behind each of the names and some really heartfelt ones as well from from people all over the world so we're really amazed it's a reaction she's got can you tell us a few Yeah yeah one of my favorite ones you know I lost but the suggestion was s.p.f. 50 like the sunscreen because alcohol related. Yes 100 percent so I thought we saw that one's a bit of a loss there's other ones like Elle some of you say out of the Disney movie the ice princess snarls now it's like pro all the different ones like that there are lots of sort of ones like cast spoke Cassie that are cute as well so we've got a really long long list it's going to be a bit of a tough job picking a name that's all that that's all that lovely and good health everything all well with mother and baby. Yeah everything's really going really really well sorry Joey was born and little Joey was born in January so Joey's when they're born at the size of a jelly deigns they actually grow inside their mothers pouch and so they just become big enough about this time that 7 i months down the track to come out and climb around so visitors to the zoo are now starting to sort of spot all federal joeys and disco really stands out as you can imagine like and how long before she's fully grown that. I will be a probably another mother 12 months before she's before she could sort of becomes an adult but yeah where where I'm expecting her actually to lose her head baby watch her and probably go a little bit more of a normal koala color color as some say her babies are all a little boys and girls for bar bloggers and some of that's just it is I was on Psycho at the overing James.
