You may be able to tell I got to pick the theme song for this week's show and the Swedish band that he's singing about money might give you a clue as to why we're playing this more on a particular suite who has made quite a lot of money this week can I just point out Joe By the way yes this is a significant improvement on Maroon 5 the last time you selected as significant as a compliment in my case before we talk about that I'm going to leave because our car to. The story about money money money in the Green Bay Packers. The Green Bay Packers sack a Super Bowl winning coach we'll find out why before we head to Green Bay I wanted to play this chap from the N.F.L. Show on B.B.C. T.V. From the weekend how it might not just be the coach who should be getting the heat for the Packers Miss firing recently let's start by hearing Mark Chapman with former N.F.L. Players out on your A and Jason sorry hard a hard on who you're a who I was you mean you mean oh say Oh man you're a this is the I'm talking about the Packers a lot of the blame has been laid on the head coach but I think you're right is Could we play better this game was one of his lines games sure he is 0137 it's a bit of a convoluted start this because he's 0 in 37 when trailing by more than a point in the 4th quarter against teams with a with a record that's a fantastic so he isn't bringing. His own team back against straw. Well I mean you can't lie with numbers and that says a lot. Maybe we inflated the greatness of air Rodgers you know you know more I think I think you know I've been one of his biggest so far in World War 2 that I'm going to use the great quote but I've actually thought he was The grew up in the league what you just read there is indefensible they said interesting now because that's the 1st time that I've heard anyway from a kind of an outsider of Green Bay that level of criticism being thrown in the way of their star quarterback Aaron Rodgers we'll hear more about that from a guy who is in Green Bay and has a podcast out by a pack daddy we will hear from him very soon yes I'm going home William returns to the Toronto Maple Leafs. He's a leaf teammate to make sure Mona welcomed him back into the dressing room. Did the Make a rained out. But just gave him a hug 2nd graphs on the Concho said we're all excited from back here is a big so just more excitement for all of us I've said many times I'm a Toronto Maple Leafs fan I show no trying to show their strength in that I was very happy when he signed on the south wall is the make or rained. I'm not sure but it sounds fun. Anyway that was from the Toronto Maple Leafs youtube channel more on the very lengthy contract negotiations later on and how it could affect many N.H.L. Teams in the future but 1st time for some news it's the season of firings really across a lot of leagues dismissals and retirements Ohio State University has announced that may saying his name right we're going to go in May be the mayor Meyers Numero Meyer who won 3 did you know James they call him Bob he was 3 national football championships for the team but was heavily criticized Iris handling of domestic violence allegations against and now fired assistant he's too. After the Rose Bowl the COA fences coordinator Ryan Day is set to be announced as the new head coach Meanwhile in basketball the Chicago Bulls who are not having a good season have fiber Coach Fred Burke they've had lots of injuries but they're only 5 and 19 for the season and the way the American sports announcing works just so you know that means 5 wins 19 losses so if you hear 5 and 19 that's what it means anyway only 2 teams are worse off than them at the moment and what's worse than being a backup quarterback I know the answer this I know the answer to the yes go on Mr James work in there is being a an injured backup quarterback yes yes the Washington Redskins who've already lost a starter Alex Smith to a broken right tibia and fibula What's worse I mean you One's enough surely and I've now lost that backup Colt McCoy to a fractured fibula as well Mark Sanchez who only joined the team 14 days Soko took over in the loss to the hills you know let's hear from the line back a mason Foster to look at his face in a news really hurt this sucks man which is going to keep it rolling for colts that was definitely just in case you're wondering that was definitely we definitely didn't get somebody who's very English to record but no so your face anyway if there are any quarterbacks going spend anywhere then get in touch with the Washington Redskins unless you called Collin in the N.H.L. Moving swiftly on the Philadelphia Flyers took drastic mid-season action by sacking that General Manager Ron Hextall and replacing him with Foreigner former Minnesota Wild G.M. Chuck Fletcher undermined if you want to get in touch with us at any time with your questions your North American sporting questions it's up all nights at B.B.C. Daugherty K. We will not say that we can answer them but we will find people who come. You know after I don't. Write times to all packets this week they cite my coach Mike McCarthy He's been with them since 2006 when the Super Bowl with him in 2010 introduce Aaron Rodgers a starter 2 years before but it's not been a good season they have 47 and one record 4 wins 78 and one tie and on Sunday lost 2017 to the hour zone at Cardinal So let's find out what's go wrong with the package dandy himself. From PAC and dot com friend of the program Brian schlepp. I am very well probably better than you are having what is a lot this season what's gone wrong. Oh boy that's a good question Well yeah I think I would when somebody comes up with a quantum leap reference immediately. Let's let's let's beat around the bush a little bit. You know I mean I think firing the head coach kind of told you quite a bit I think the best case scenario is that it was sort of the big thing that needs to get moved on from. You know the relationship there and the overall engine of the machine just wasn't really quite work and Aaron Rodgers and Mike McCarthy just weren't really seeing eye to eye I think that kind of saw things work and started shutting things down we saw Clinton get Dick's get shipped off and a few other players and I think the team just need to reboot I think we need a new message and we need a new a new energy to the team overall and hopefully the new coach can find that for Brian good to appoint a G.M. Last year I really hope I say his name right has as the back room let the coach down do you thing this year. I don't think anybody knows how to say his name to be honest I. Don't know I think he's done a good job but I think overall the quality of the team is I mean it's obvious you know. Team is perfect but overall I think the quality is a lot higher than what they were able to put on the field and I think that really comes down to you know the person I think it does come down to the head coach so they do it to be able to put put together better results on the field based on the quality of the talent but like you said he's a new G.M. And I think he's done a good job in the 1st year and it might take take you know one or 2 more years to get some quality talent in to to reach our full potential but obviously hopefully 2019 will be able to see a much better and improved product Ryan we spoke I mean what feels like a very long time ago now at the beginning of the season and all things were rosy and things looked good and what I've found really interesting over the last few weeks is this is really the 1st time that I'm hearing criticism thrown in the direction of our own rod just because he's kind of been and correct me if I'm wrong but a kind of a sacred figure in the Green Bay Packers organization up to this point Where is really now. The coach has lost his job but it could also on Aaron Rodgers shoulders and it's going to be interesting to see how he reacts under a very different environment now. You know that's that's definitely true and I think there was a time you know in the past he's had a couple rocky years but you're right you don't really talk about it right you don't touch that Aaron Rodgers is kind of a sacred thing but. That's sort of the scariest issue here is because there was definitely some issues in his game and were all very hopeful that you know again with a new coach and a new message and a new energy Aaron Rodgers would be right back we left off but it's going to be kind of a waiting game to see Obviously though the talent is there we saw the accuracy we saw the athleticism the intelligence is obviously there everything is there. We're just hoping that we get to see a little bit more of the 2011 Aaron Rodgers for his last few years here no Ryan there's a there was an amazing staff this week on the B.B.C.'s N.F.L. Show this week which I don't know if you've ever seen it can I'd recommend to everybody even if you're not a massive American football fan watch it because it's really good fun to see omen euro this week here's one of the pundits on the program say that and this is the best stuff of the year I think Aaron Rodgers is north to 37 that's know who wins 37 defeats when trailing by more than a point in the 4th quarter against teams with a winning record O.C. Said that was indefensible I mean he's our inroad just really all that. Yeah. It's one of those things were right I really would love to dive into that because stats are kind of a silly thing you know for most of all you know it's how often does Aaron Rodgers really trail and you know whatever but no I mean we we've seen what he's done we've seen against the Cardinals and we've seen against other teams the hail marys and we've seen the orchestrated drives we have seen and we've heard and we know when we're down you know whatever it is what within 6 points with a minute left that's more than enough time for him to orchestrate a brilliant drive to get on the field how exactly that came to be I really don't know and I really would would be willing to bet if you look for example at some of the proprietor playoff losses a lot of the little those losses came because Aaron Rodgers did get down the field did take the lead and he never saw the ball again so again I'd like to look at that a little more I'm sure there are some times he didn't quite do enough and it's not all on him there's a lot of players and he's had some terrible defenses over the years which I think contributes to most of that and it must be tough it must be tough because when he spoke so much about the Green Bay Packers fans seeing this team as they see such a huge thing for Green Bay and to see that team struggle in the way that they have this year must be so demoralizing knowing it is a long wait now till next season when let's face it really sticky that he's now what he's being what tools that is my that's that's my biggest goal for the podcast is to get people to embrace the build in the grind for next year I mean the process for 29000 starts today starting today we start looking for a new head coach we start looking at I have you know resources I have a draft website all this stuff is you're looking at people for the draft we start there's things to be excited about there's a lot to build around you know another thing I talked about there are core pieces you want in a football team you want a quarterback you want to number one wide receiver you need a number one cornerback we have a lot of core pieces we're very close get a coach get a couple more pieces with our new G.M. We'll see it. I can do it in 2019 but I'm excited to see what we can do Ryan I've got to go to be honest with you here you know Joel and I have been presenting this program now for 3 or 4 months and you know we kind of thought we kind of follow a team for a bit so we decided to follow the Cleveland Browns because they've been absolutely dreadful both of us got a soft spot for Green Bay because of the ownership and all that the joy of Cleveland have been rubbish for donkey's years what tells you that Green Bay are not going to be that bad for that long and his. Yeah no I you know that there are there is the possibility that we're headed toward a dark hair I've never seen it in my lifetime which is incredible in 31 years old Brett Farve started we were on a winning streak I sighed from a few blips I've never seen that it could happen but again the pieces are there and we have very very good talent at quarterback and some other areas and we just need to you know make sure that we can find a good coach and I have I have faith we needed a new defensive coordinator they did a great job we needed a new G.M. They did a great job and I have faith we're going to find a good head coach is it is a little weird though when this is a fan base who's you know again I'm I'm not that old so a lot of the fan base has never really experienced something like this so we're we're trying to feel it out a little bit we don't know how to lose we're trying to learn but me personally and the fan base where we're trying to learn how to embrace the build and get excited about what's to come told part of the fun of following a sports team isn't it and if he goes on a lovely run as the Green Bay Packers have done you just got to enjoy it or not is the lesson because it ain't gonna last Ryan thank you ever so much for coming on and hopefully the next time we speak to you it will be much brighter times on Iraq as he's back throwing those incredible throws that we have to say absolutely I look forward to it thanks again guys so that is the PAC Daddy himself that is what he calls himself I know given him say you are aware that is Ryan slick from PAC and dot com We thank him very much for being in touch with us now the N.H.L. Headlines are dominated by restricted free agent William Neal and finally resigning with the Toronto Maple Leafs just 7 minutes before the 5 pm Eastern time deadline sending most leaf fans into a state of my old panic follow their work on Monday night and I yes I will I will quite high. Hold my hand up say I was also in the states upon it constantly refreshing my Twitter feed like a crazy person and if he had not signed he would have had to sit out the rest of the N.H.L. Season and start negotiations again next year his contract came out at $6900000.00 a year I have a 6 years which to be honest is what a lot of people thought it would end up being taking him there was a bias at the beginning so it kind of took him to 10000000 dollars in year one of the deal we're going to talk to you and shell you cheap presenter and lease fan and friend of the show Steve dying will shortly but 1st let's hear how he broke the nice to his fans on his You cheap channel so these friends are what you want to talk about this really is going to be a little different for those of you who don't know Hi My name is Steve Daniel and I have this You Tube channel where I talk about the Leafs after every Leafs game in a bunch of other stuff and today is going to be a little different because somehow I'm Lisa I'm all excited about it so now if you're interested here is my perfectly rational take on the news. To me later gets treated or even better yet doesn't sign just to watch Leave it freaking out. Over the Stooges turned out it is redundant I know I was. There. And will be my friend welcome home pretty much sums up how I felt when I saw that just before the deadline 1st of all just how big was it to get William. On the ice for the Toronto Maple Leafs this season and on a contract that's going to keep him there for what we think is going to be a long time or huge you know I think it's just a lot of I believe you know if you are pointing out holes in the Leafs what I've been granted their back and it isn't great but there are often switches are you believe the best in the league just got another player back and are really good. Wanted that so I don't think trading here was ever an option for G.M. Kyle diverse. And having said that the whole season a lot of people thought that was one of the most ridiculous things about the whole saga is everyone going well I think I'd rather him sit out a full year than trade up are you sure. Sure there are a top 5 G.M. In the league right now I don't think having one of their best players or season is conducive just success surely that we surely that was just a fact that well if we can have him no one else can have it. I was just saying diet . Pretty much yeah I know exactly old came down to the wire Unbelievably I know at least one has been following it for months now and nobody ever really thought that it would go this late in the day I mean he signed his contract with something like 7 minutes to go before the Eastern time deadline at 5 pm describe to me you'll feelings as a leaf on that deadline approached. Well it was it was a little bit different for me as a Leaf fan because I have this this weird little life where I get to be a fan but also a broadcaster so I was I was co-hosting a radio show on Saturday evening but it didn't start until 5 o'clock Wow just right right on the time line is I'm sitting there across the table from my my co-host Rob diesel and we're like all right what are we going to talk about. Because we didn't know we had the guests lined up and we knew we were going to get an answer we just didn't know what the answer was going to be so. A little bit anxious you know if I'm being totally honest but everything I had heard heading into the deadline it was it was going to get done and everyone seemed confident. And sure enough we got done I was surprised to know how close it actually was less than an hour before the deadline you know there was some speculation that maybe a handshake deal had been worked out far ahead of time that isn't the only case and it was pretty close yeah yeah I mean I'm sure the lease can afford more than a fax machine but you will still relying on technology and I'm sure you have had my mean 20 Knology has filed you on it just terrified me thinking that you know the Internet going down in col Davis's hotel or in William E. Landis House could fall to disco Wolf a. Oh I've heard that experience in my own life believe. A few years ago they were trying to train players and you want to hold on to the bar and during the draft they care remember why your it was and it was it was for a 3rd round and the deal was done the liberty the fax machine broke so they have the awkward inconvenience of having to tell you on a slogan that he was traded and then going to him a few minutes later and go and actually never mind. Never mind we'd like to keep you know I've never heard you play with a late April Fool's joke for get this ever happened and we love you. You are dreaming you're on a journey and now they see this as this story has been huge as part of the Leafs and Phillies fans but also there is definitely being on this from other N.H.L. Teams and other N.H.L. Teams management's an agent 6 cetera because when the lander is kind of the standout or he was the standout restricted free agent this year and certainly the fact it went on to go right up to the December 1st deadline brought attention to it but next year there are loads and I'm not just talking about the big names on the Leafs because they've got a few more coming up with Austin Matthys and Mitch manner but there are some really big names in the N.H.L. Next year and I've heard some people saying that actually this might be a bit of a change for the N.H.L. Where they're going to have to start rewarding their younger players earlier on in their career because at the end of the day those are the guys that are selling tickets. Well in this whole area seen all the N.H.L. Has had all these lockout singing and everything to try to keep the cost of players down but at the end of the day it's good general managers who sign the contract and at the end of the day they want to win and when you're in a position where you think you can win or you suck and you would like to know when you're going to do whatever it takes and leave guys can't help themselves so will you internet how to score a lot of goals and set up a lot of the source do you want or not here's the car maker where he knows how to put up a lot of points and you want him or not here's a cot thing thinker man hears Marner go down the list so the N.H.L. Did a good job I guess in achieving their goal of keeping the price of young players down but no fortunately or unfortunately there are too many good young players and we're going to have to start paying thank you very much to Steve Di go and represent an all round Leafs fan as you may have been able to tell for not telling us the news about William Neil and they may believe superstar signing a deal I know so what effect is that could have for the White League to time I think for some of your correspondent. So we have been inundated this week long really by e-mail by I'M THE MAN Yes Well that would be enough to inundate us from what I can only describe as the mean streets of Shropshire So this is interesting so I saw this as well now this is an email from Andrew Stratton Yeah. About 5 minutes away from where I live and he's probably trying to avoid you right I never knew that was a fellow fan of North Americans boys just down the road from my family home not just a fellow fan but listen to gone high 5 X. Hi I played British American football for a 16 year. Years and over 200 league game veteran in Church Stretton. Never heard of you never heard of the Church Stretton Cillian and. I do all over the U.K. And Europe the USA and Australia I was coached by John Johnson the founder of the Japan and Sugar Bowl coached by Bruno Walter the specialist coach of the Minnesota Vikings N.F.L. Team I was coached by Steve Croes in the New England quarterback for the N.F.L. My position was center when I played for just wait for measure no doubt just wait for me against the Stratton car to move gas better. When I play for the wall so Titans 1988 stop it we were in the national ball of Great Britain so they were out so then you know I take that back is it not I would have thought the wall saw something you know W. Is going to the wall so warriors would have been great Wouldn't you it doesn't have to be just to help Mike or about play for Dallas Cowboys might is there Dallas Cowboys running back played for the Minnesota Vikings I still miss playing in the sport but if I returned to the game I would be crippled LOL you never appreciate how fit you are until you are not fit anymore and never a truer word has been said by Andrew from Church Stretton what I like most about this by the way was the fact that he put at the end of his email Andrew Williams number 54 well like Andrew let's go for a beer sometimes Let's go down to the pub there are many fine pubs in church well as one does one find a harbinger strain or go down the whole shoes and will want to him more about this they go off you can only refuse. It's a part of my life has made sure that the last lot of that email has never really been relevant to me really that you never appreciate how fit you are until you're not fit him or if we never fit the 1st place you can appreciate how unfit you are yet it's very true and listen if you want to get in touch. Question time it was from Bishop's Stortford last night and 5 Live Adrian Chiles the B.B.C. Political reporter Joey day or so and comedian for Brady all to get a bit of a lighthearted look at the show we put some of the best bits together from Question Time extra time this is the podcast with. A. QUESTION So I'm extra signed the podcast with Adrian Chiles. Welcome to Question Time extra time the pug cast and we're joined by a couple of very agile young minds in political journalism we have B.B.C.'s political producer Joe We did some of the comedian fern Brady's off with panelists tonight your show score power and chaos is that a is there a break that element that oh that's my new show. I think there will be yeah it was something. In about talking about before but now there's the main news story in the U.K. And there's no words I'm showing away from it. As a young political journalist Joe week you ever think but you've picked a bit earlier as a as a youngster I think it's never going to be this make a game is it back on if you don't it's a you know you just started just after Tony Blair got elected and finished it 5 years later nothing happened and I like within a day more happens than that in 5 years and I look at the show tomorrow if there were terribly civil to each other actually there wasn't a lot of. That there wasn't a lot of sort of headbanging mostly that was the most striking thing about tonight's episode was everyone was so polite the jail there was even the bit where Charles said the poor mean was a respect both fans of any really like underline. But I guess people are just back in time from the closet to you too and like well it all by backing down or they just don't question is there any is no sense of peace breaking out in the in the in the. Work I wouldn't say that a Christmas truce No I mean and also if you look at this deal this is weird alliance of sort of remain as in fervent prayer breaks at people like Charles Moore and Shami Chakrabarti who probably disagree on just about everything under the sun but on this deal they both don't like it so there's this weird bit where they both agree with each other. I mean one word to describe the show tonight would be dull not want to use but is a word. Not this show I'll talk about Question Time itself but when it comes down to just get me down to highlights that there's a good little 23 minute show of highlights on there isn't it so I think some of the people in the audience are quite good yeah OK Well let's we will be down to the highlights or you will put another white we watched So you didn't have to cost purposes he's the best bits from Bishop's Stortford. Will the deal be rejected and if so what will happen that. This is on the showing that the deal is approved and please support the deal the prime minister. Has established not sure how about is in the best interest of our country on the basis of what the law officers have told the government the prime minister is lying sponsible to kill people. I think of this morning there's a 100 full. Support to the government yes one of the government going to get real and accept that this is from going to go through this is why Mrs May's deal cannot possibly work because that whatever is being argued is potentially permanent and it is an annexation of part of our country on the basis of the information that we know that it's far better to stay in the European Union is to leave Isn't it time labor another M.P. Stop fantasizing about getting a better deal and he stepped back a real deal on Tuesday really think it's not legitimate for you to promise the people that they can decide our future by referendum and then to take it away you need to deal with the real problem which is. Democracy doesn't mean anything to the 53 person that. You know what about the party who wanted to remain I mean do they not do their voice not get heard should prime minister resign if a deal is parliament. This government last. Few hours this week that has happened for 40 years you could have said this is actually something that's bigger than one party we need something that will unite at a very divided country David Attenborough ones that climate change is one of the biggest starts humanity I'm 16 years old and I can see these changes in effect petitions doing and we keep being told and now we've just got the time or we're running out of time what is true about just the panel agree with the Met police officers knocking and suspected mopeds criminals knocking them off their student high speed to say yes but I'm really really worried about this I think it could all it would take is for it to go horribly wrong in one case and then the pendulum of popular opinion will the full swing the other way. Now for a new made a very poor job of hiding your boredom during that which I did well to be fair it wasn't it wasn't the liveliest there was some sort of pretty bad which is what you get when you get some pretty rational commonsense argument isn't it becomes you become not particularly interesting because you want people absolutely sort of firing each other from the hip you know there was no bombs everyone was very respectful of each other people were saying quite no one in the audience go yeah that's not what our question is is the energy finally sinking out of the of the of the brig's it by and the anger is that all these are obviously dissipated you know one of the things that really people in the audience are using that phrase is contempt of Parliament parliamentary sovereignty customs arise when these phrases are no more have been using you know 2 or 3 years ago and now they are becoming a part of everyday conversation I suppose that does make it a bit more you know boring maybe that we are arguing about these really technical issues all the time. The issue with the backstop Let's get that out the white and discuss what came to pass there was a moment earlier on when James broken CIO drew the short straw didn't he was coming on to represent the government today I. Found I was in for an easy night he was gaining to be with the kind of government line and then David Dimbleby was straight on him the need to ensure that we have that certainty because once you know you're going to actually debate against it you couldn't temper it when the advice that was dragged out from Geoffrey Cox is that the thing where did your guy get to be one thing he wanted to buy the backstops temporary permanent or otherwise fern and I are all ears yes the backstop is a guarantee so there is probably always border said Oh nobody wants a return to a hard border in Ireland and that's complicated because if you have breaks where the U.K. Is making different roles there and. There's an issue of the border so the way of resolving this which the E.U. Wanted which are Lamont to do something called a backstop which is basically if we don't get what we want which is a big free trade deal we'll keep some of the rules close to the E.U. In order to Northern Ireland will stay close to the E.U. Than the rest of the would be you pay want to get into it because that effectively just to check things which we Northern Ireland and the rest of the U.K. Get which creates a border in the are we so you know that's a phrase he has a book they mean they have a big problem they believe in the Union the United Kingdom and they think that if you're checking goods going between Northern Ireland and England say that's a problem OK All right so. The legal advice when it transpired said what it said that So this is the issue the backstop whether Britain can pull out of it on its own or whether an East would do it with the E.U. As a sort of joint thing and the legal advice said kind of in black and white that the U.K. Couldn't do it on its own it would have to it was a big problem for lots of kind of directed to it because I think so we can only do it if the E.U. Wanted us to do it or allowed us to very or wanted the same thing we could only come out of the back yeah I mean yeah sort of yeah yeah they're kind of Britain trying to turn around one day and say we're leaving it so it could go on forever Here's a basis is as well as a gun would say that this is something that they don't expect to use and I want to use it's a blast gasp insurance policy they want to get a trade deal as well and they hope to do that but it's an insurance policy. From these 2 for government which is a think tank backstop definitely hate this one fact I wish we had kind of the safety net was in it's just actually call it safe to say that's what the genesis word is for it. Like a point yeah I mean backstop What does that mean does that kind of game around us doesn't it safety net is what it is for that makes sense yeah OK. You know I just prefer if they use that as well I think in our Yes already confused and then point to backstop then. I don't know that's that I mean I think it is the idea came out of the Irish government wanted it and then the E.U. Michel Barnier came through that. CHARLES MOORE Not a fan of the backstop while I think it is very very important to try and get bricks it through in some sort of arrangement it has to be an arrangement which actually is bricks it and it seems to me that what's wrong with this deal is not and secondly things are almost like paying out all that money without necessary getting anything in return but this is something that's absolutely wrong and that is the backstop because we're stop we're caught we're not going to be able to break up or break away and create our own trading relationship and we have life after bricks it under the cerebrum So what is the point OK. And Shami Chakrabarti well so the same question began with 3 words that you very rarely hear I would thought Chakrabarti altering Charles is right about this is a matter of law rather than politics you know politics can come and go and change and you can make all sorts of promises but as a matter of law the backstop takes you into I looked and only the you holds the key it's a funny one that because Labor's policy is for sort of permanent persons union with the E.U. Which words are about locking in keys and so what they want a close relationship a closer relationship the conservatives do certainly on customs so yeah I mean that's another way of looking at it OK so. OK So what is so that it's a matter of Lords amount of principle go start with backstop for over what. Is there anything that can chip that well there you are very clear on air you know Michel Barnier chief negotiators said no backstop no deal the Irish government had pushed in the 1st place feel really strongly about it they say without a backstop there's a risk of this hard border again in Northern Ireland and all the problems of the past are no months of our border so. For Ireland for the E.U. 27 for Michel Barnier they really care about this backstop so remember the Yukos come to this agree with European Union and now it's trying to get its own parliament agree with it as always. Even if Parliament agree on something the E.U. Has to do as well and this backstop is really fundamentally important for the fun I got a text from some of the same questions on came from Hartford and why are you surprised by a lack of passion. I think that's most unfair I think don't think hard for a chair paper any more or less passionate than anybody else on your tours around the country who has the least passion for Terri and I don't want to get Charles R. Joe you cower and get them by ship store food yeah I gather as a skin to Essex isn't that where it's on the border of it or have been chased out. Yeah get off you and pardon for deferent one time Kyra member wire and so friend I remember I walked offstage crying because they were so horrible and then the only way I could leave was to walk back out past the audience and then you know you're standing cheeks and yeah and I was holding the bag for life as well which just made it more tragic well into the normal it wasn't a free one Yeah yeah and then the other time was somewhere you know so near 60 booed me off for 4 manner which is another way of saying about your summer Don Well that is leave it oddly lacking passion it was just the wrong question and there's a catch up star for tonight actually that change is on it like Joey was in there they're educated and they use language and terms that you use and it's interesting how much more politically engaged the average person is. The issue the 2nd referendum came up as you'd expect in Blanford from the same page on what he says we wanted however you voted in that referendum and 2016 we now know of the price that's going to be paid in quite simply I don't believe the unemployment is a price was peeing that's what happened under the Tories was that and I'm not prepared to talk about people in Bishop's Stortford in Scotland plays of our own that have told us that an ordeal so that the $80000.00 Scots could lose their jobs the B $600.00 pounds a year on average poorer. That is a disgrace that any government is prepared to sit back and allow that to happen and they're going to have to thank you thank I was thankful you stay here as the best option but the point here is they're moving sort of edging towards the moment they can turn this to their advantage is the Scottish National Party and go for you know another independence vote of the of their own by saying well we remain as we don't want to go that that's a drift Yeah all those kind of complicated but remember the election result last year where they went backward at the last seat so I think. You know there's I don't know if they do want independence referendum right now because it could the polls don't really show that a lot about they wanted sooner or later well the last. Party and we were the important thing which was has tar anti Lakeway not just we are. Here we get your school age why do we need to do that as well I just know there is all there school is people credit on time you know have a tartan tie north door and I hate when people do say retard I don't why when people don't provide any class enough well that my family you know if you got any tart and a toy any time no non And I don't mean school and play just any time and especially the S.N.P. Do that Alex Salmond those tar intros are it's not just die a little bit and say Charles Moore I thought he made some fair points tonight he's something to say about remind us you to be a Remain is a totally respectable point of view a great many millions of people believe it it's an absolute view but I really think it's not a legitimate future promised the people that they can decide our future by referendum and then to take it away and. Thank you and he also points out that this my own might not be true but he makes a point remind us on the 2nd bite he said it's only reminders I want to stay involved I'm afraid. The people proposing a 2nd referendum were often people who bitterly opposed the 1st one and always said awful it was to us the people are now pretending they want to referendum for rhetorical reasons so they're trying to turn it all round again it always happens on the constant when the referendum so often gone against the E.U. That they made to vote again that's what happens it happened in our land it happened and why do you think the public with the right to vote again would suddenly change their minds and remain No no no I don't want you frightened of you know I must say no no no 4th no I'm not at all front of it what I think is very very bad is the attempt to get round what the public has already decided. Barty agreed with more again when she. Warning which had a ring of truth about Tessa what you wish for because what if we get something that's almost the same a little bit one way a little bit the other we still have a fundamentally split country and then what happens next best of 3 best of 5. You advanced Joey earlier I a possible out call referendum what if you got what he said what if you got remain one but with a reduced on the now you're then well which one would have precedent you know if you're a believe supporter and then that and want to come home for another one you just have this never ending referendums. You know as I think you know certainly people who advocate for and acknowledge they wouldn't you know solve everything insulate and there's also this question of what would be on the ballot paper. Would you have you know there's probably 3 options you might have you might have remained to reason most deal and then I saw heart breaks or No Deal outcome so it's a lot opens a lot of questions as well the 2nd referendum discussion. When Sharon is talking about us being a split country I did wonder if that was maybe why everyone was being oh well more nice and respectful of each other on the thing tonight that people are tired of it being that way. You just you wonder you wonder whether there's something in that you know this brings exhaustion people afraid of being unpleasant to each other think it might be the exception that proves the rule I think hostilities will probably resume next week on question. And I will swear I will say the audience is feisty tonight in a polite sort of part of the cheer basics border going to work he's a polite putdown of Labor's policy if they're fighting just to get another general election I'm sorry but I mean I think that an election at this crucial time is just absolutely self-serving I think if you want. That was pretty selfish but prettiest stiff surge of applause there backing about you know I'd be she wasn't she just sayin that we were going to get the same house so the Tories are no i think well maybe she was and people don't want a general election in the brain there are a Bristol type Y. But maybe they're also suggesting we should probably talk about a general election is not going to solve anything I know I'll give in a 2nd referendum on the general advice of the last one the Tories one you know the most seats just not quite enough for majority with the D.P.'s majority you could very realistically have a situation where Labor win a few seats off the Tories and there's even more stuff because no one's got a majority even the Tories Plus the day you pay is an audience member summing up the general irritation with politicians of every flavor they can come up with a solution they are always like why it's not oh I just don't know what he will ever be solved that's the question going to court with a solution Question Time extra time the podcast. We got an atom ologist as well Susie don't you all know from countdown from dictionary color she's put together a kind of a bricks a glossary a brac sickle if you like so we just we were discussing earlier that the versatile prefix that breaks has become I remember when Grex it 1st came about and of the BRACKS It is a reform on that and it was one of those really ugly portmanteau words that people thought just wouldn't stick around and never complained about it but you know 3 years later we're still using it but yet it's very very productive and we've had all sorts of new portmanteau most of which I've also been quite really really clumsy but they've stuck around said Bracks 3 for example. Boris Johnson coined Breck's Coast this week instead of psychoses it was Brett's case this Breck side he was take it we small coined it in you know how to pronounce as you whether it's Brian or Brie No but it was breakfast in name only. And yes also of Breck's horrible horrible blend what percentage of been made by either Margo or JOHNSON Yeah I would say probably of all 1270 percent that's just plucked out of the air but too many. The same adjectives can be repeated over and over again and this is I think this is sort of party message management to from Put it like that for example on Question Time last week Rebecca long by a lady said the word shambolic over and over and over again to the extent I thought well you know she must have just settled on the subjective and just been told to roll with it what it was a deviation of shambolic you have got to hand it over what I think shambolic must be linked to the shambles the Germans were once but she was tables that was. Basically covered in the sort of go and blood but she did but you know animals in a shambles would sit outside the bridges shops quite often and then meet would be sold from them and yes shambolic is I think developed from there. And it's a I mean it's an it's an excellent adjective another one that's been bandied around a lot is seismic you know because because of the sort of huge repercussions that we were expecting from this. And sardonic is another one that I noticed has been applied to just almost everything and I love the etymology of start on it because it really new Fed to plonk a plant from Sardinia So that's the sawed bit that was said to be. Facial grimacing and convulsions that resembled just terrifying laughed at and then was followed by death so it's really greatly the history of sudden rock so that something like a really ferociously angry backbencher with hypertension sardonic is literally what they're being if they're not careful I think going back to seismic. Normally it sort of represents Hyperbole doesn't it so we one might cite you know a football result you know sort of Arsenal you know lose or win a particular result might mean the loss of a you know a manager going or something seismic resulting cleanly it's clearly hyperbole like used in reference to Bragg's it I'm going to wonder with hyperbole or not because at some level it was Sally's mate you know the political ground shifted beneath our feet on the day of the referendum so for once Johnson was right when he called it seismic arguably spot on and he of course he loves his hyperbole loves his his hyperbolic insult you know the Martin headed Mach one pick setter and his alliteration is is however annoying it is sometimes for some of us it's you know it it excellent He knows what he's doing when he when it comes to language but you're right and actually all kinds of linguistic inflation which we've been thing for decades you know everybody's in can Desson with rage results can be apocalyptic right when it comes to bricks and actually they seem to found their place and no one really is accusing them of being you know inflated a tool because it just it doesn't actually feel quite right for the. Quite fitting cake is an interesting one because I think this started off Didn't we start off with Johnson at one stage same Mike problem a policy on cake used to have it and eat it I think he said that's the right yeah and but. That was what not Barney I or somebody or young career or top score or one of them said we're still seeing K. Kids I'm from the British It's a beautiful thing that work it is it is here is included in the dictionaries short list for word of the year so it was right up there in terms of words that despite riffing off you can have your cake and eat it except it's implying that that's exactly what Britain wants to do given this is going to go on for all eternity longer have to you and I are pushing up their uses Yeah there is presumably is endless possibilities for more words as long as Johnson Maga still live in a brave and. Yes And actually someone else may actually in a different context and yesterday they just said you know are there other times when more new words come about than others you know it is ebb and flow and the answer is definitely yes when there is a seismic happening or event then you can be sure that we will need the words to you know taught to collate it and breaks it is absolutely no exception Question Time extra time the podcast there was a very touching tribute to David Dimbleby from from Charles Moore right to the end just really aware of the immense to reraise penultimate Question Time programme you know what do you make of him do you think you know there's another old guy on the telly or can you see the quality that he brings to it later when he was like you don't need to suck up to make them not going to be on again and of what he says here we got. Here is Charles Moore playing a tribute to him can I say something I say something completely different which is nothing but this time you. So in a way because at this time of great constitutional instability when we all feel very uncomfortable as we've been talking today we do value continuity and the only 2 things that are really have continuity in this country I managed to the Queen and David Dimbleby and like I. Was I'm so old that I even be appeared on this program before David Ramage with Robin Day Some of you will remember and I think David's been a fantastic chairman I should be very very sad that we won't be seeing him anymore .
