Stephen Kinnock indorsed her saying she understood how to lead the party forward when you look at what Lisa's position has been on the 2nd referendum and the way in which she talks very convincingly about labor needing to be rooted in the communities that voted against us in this election and I think she understands that there are millions of voters in the so-called red wall seats who relend their vote to the Tories this time we can win that vote back a 14 year old boy has been arrested in connection with the murder of another teenager in Bristol the 17 year old victim was found fatally injured in Bedminster yesterday he was taken to hospital but died a short time later David Aston has more details a 17 year old boy was found with stab wounds to the chest on Mansfield Street in Bedminster shortly before 1 30 pm yesterday he was taken to hospital but died a short time later he's next of kin have been informed Specialist Crime scene investigators examine the scene yesterday a 14 year old boy has been arrested in connection with the incident and is currently in police custody Anglian Water say 2000 homes in Bedford just still have . As well as all that will have a round of this week's Asian headlines from the past 7 days and we'll have your weekly dose of this addiction with quotations. But now to some music and this is the. Calm could be the late most of the really this is the song into that machine a bit. Cold Radio. Now to politics and senior conservatives have tonight confirmed the government plans to bring it to a droll deal back to the Commons before Christmas labor on the other hand is preparing itself for you. 5 years of opposition one aspect of the new house will be an increase in the number of black and Asian M.P.'s also honey reports our exit poll is suggesting that there will be a conservative majority when all the votes are counted after this election of December 29th the conservatives on 368 seats on Labor way down on 191 Friday the 13th and historic day in so many ways one of the 1st voices to react to the landslide win for the conservatives on b.b.c. T.v. Was the home secretary pretty Patel We want to get Brett sit down you've heard the prime minister say this get it done before Christmas introduce the legislation and get that move in empowerment and then of course speaking about the priorities n.h.s. Education law and order police officers something obviously that I'm working on points based immigration system the conservative win was based around a huge number of voters switching from labor like this not from the middle and. According to the conservative policy. That people vote for a consult to have a very good review or want to only this time is very good Shane you know rest from each so many happy hours like. We want to do get the Brits. Think it all off now so we'll get it don't you think this retained his seat. And says the Labor Party has to do some serious soul searching what we need to do is to have an overview of the entire thing and to ensure that we know we can to piece together various policies that we can put forward in a solid writer 1st over the next general election. There you go that sound reporter and if they're sort of clipped to the end there accidentally you know you are listening to in this here on b.b.c. Radio Manchester and b.b.c. Radio language shows there's been an interesting elections and quite a win for the conservative parties and it's interesting what's been going out on social media as well because some people say. Those who have certain extreme thoughts decided to back the conservatives and quite a bit on social media like we got a tweet from soccer who had to turn writer and she has had a lot of stick with me from quite a few people saying that Boris Johnson's victory is a victory for fascists but fashion fascists are saying that you know we support him now. It's interesting how you know some people are going down the line Ben and I will continue topic on politics later on in the program let's go to some music now and this is Nigam with the. Pupils to feuds. To. Bit of Nigam there with I'm sure quite a few of the politicians are probably feeling a bit of that at the moment but there you go that's the nature of the business isn't it so interesting because even Katie Hopkins I'm sure you know who she is has been replying to ash Sarka who basically says that you know it's not a victory for fascists but the fascists are saying it's a victory for them and she she has basically also said that Britain has Boris and the blue collar Army nationalism is back and the British people there you go that's some of the views from some individuals out there that's Katie Hopkins and then you have the say the water sea as well former chair of the conservative party and she says my party but start healing its relationship with British Muslims endorsements from Tommy Robinson and Katie Hopkins and colleagues retreating both is deeply disturbing right now let's go to another track and it is need seeing with a longer watch this. Thank. You got like. Everybody got. To. Have a. Longer watch on them we'll be talking more about some of the old classic songs the longer watch as the one of the old traditional songs as and we're going to talk about a special project that's taking place in Birmingham but it's all about the wedding songs and what they mean for women out there and women taking control. Radio Manchester and the b.c. Radio. And more from Nick later on in the program now have a listen to this. Long . Gone. Down. The debt was somebody. Crying already well that's the sound of them a certain a-Z. There with the good and the term can and funny on the timber just some of the many classical Punjabi wedding songs in the folk tradition and that's a subject of discussion tonight as there is a special project called sudden on the timber which means a temporary nest of birds and the project takes a look at splintering what Punjabi wedding songs in particular and the role of women and their stories but let's find out more from the Creator Joining me is rip Indigo a Punjabi poet performer and creative curator Welcome to the program. Hi How are you know much for her and what I think I should say who is from the then the d i n o to keep it in Punjabi tradition. You're right. Good wonderful now it's a fascinating project actually caught my eye on social media on Twitter and and I got in touch with almost as Actually this is something we need to be discussing because these are some of the musics and songs that we've listened to. Mend these and gates and and yet you've created a project around the tell us a little more. Says somebody other which means our temporary nest of exploring Punjabi folksongs either project it sounds freshly spoiled by crepe but country and then also I processed several gender repairmen commuter bestie whose research languages is supporting this project which I'm very grateful and Virgin do we know very well because the will here at Manchester University and that of course our Bollywood expert to yeah. But it would be a project I mean a myth to explore Punjabi wedding folk songs but from the female narrative kind of looking at their feelings and emotions of how I felt when they were married and also you know their childhood because many of the songs they all you know the female emotion their expression of how they fell and sometimes we don't we don't even realize that we just think that if you know me so that will be a thing that all headings you know we don't think about looking into them looking into the meeting behind them and I think that is exactly what caught my eye as well because often we don't sometimes you know when you when people latest thing them the thing gets them what not but really don't understand the words and I don't know whether that's because language is slowly. Becoming a lost Coles or whether people just the innovator just recites it because they've memorized it but don't understand the real stories behind some of the words that. Yeah I think it's also as with the new generation I think some of us are a bit lazy and trying to hunt down the numbers well we fail or you know they're they're just stuff our baby how do we we don't need to know them anymore though but it's it's an important part of our oral history in fact and as we can kind of see these are the stones that were kind of like an outlet in medieval kind of a medieval times in Punjab and if we kind of take that in contents I actually think you know the songs are a very powerful outlet for the women you know these are the the ways I could express themselves when they would all get together and sing the songs so I think it's really important to kind of just memorize them but understand the meaning behind them the kind of look at them and not context Well what do you think makes these been jobby wedding song special. I think they have a lot of metaphor was there's a lot of kind of like looking in between the lines between them I think there's one of surrender color songs to leave a story you would you would just think it's about a need oh so so we translate Jado but in actual fact when it goes into detail about the relationship between the mother in law and the daughter in on the daughter knows kind of complaining about her mother and well how she kind of pricks like a story like like a new but it's like only when you kind of look into the song but you kind of think about it Ok this is what they're actually talking about yeah and in terms of the project then how have you retold some of the stories on the emotions I mean how is that put trade in the in this project so I'll be working with various different women I've been doing like workshops we have been looking not found in detail kind of child letting them and then kind of writing our arms badges as well knowing our own kind of poems based on the folk songs and I'm also working with a great energy from January which is also great Actually they're around 50 plus they're based on magic somebody to fall into that. Kind of we're going to be exploring the songs in detail as well live and I've engaged a lot with the new so I think you'll be interesting to see. How the elderly kind of be with it as well and what's interesting is 1st of all unfortunately the project then but me I'm so and the chance of the region in in the northwest. I can chart your around if I can to hear I would love to tour it all over there and you know because I think yeah I think we're going to something like this can actually travel because people will relate to some of the song manners and you know you know been job from India open jobs from Pakistan or indeed been in. In the western world now one have a different take on some of the songs I mean like one of the songs that resonates with me which is a real old one letter to the child that. There's a lady. There's a lady and under my Yeah my mom used to sing that my grandma used to sing that and it was like 1st you think you know what the what's that then. Then eventually when you get speaking to them because they connect with it so much you know their mother sang and their foremothers and so on and so that was passed down isn't it and looked at each other. So it is a great color so that's great I mean I don't know what significance that holds but some of these songs really do connect people to the past and that's what is fascinating about it isnt it. So finitely and I'm surprised that you're actually a Punjabi poet because. Many times we've discussed languages you know slowly fading away how did you then become a Punjabi poet and where did this interest stem from my interest actually I mean I was not able to read a lot and just be till I was about mind being 20. And then I wanted to redraw I thought I came across the globe with all the and I'm with the freedoms but. I couldn't read it I was just fascinated by how it sounds just when I was looking at you should be here but I couldn't find anything to read it and so I started off with that and also it needs a definitely as well listening to call you think that's what's likely come down to you that you know it's just so deep I'm just trying to understand those lyrics you caught trying and you can understand the translation you know means in the direction of form. But also where it kind of stems from and then I just tried to write my own. Actually that's quite commendable I mean I feel hopping at it though but it is one of those did you learn the traditional good McKee and all that so we have been ethically Yeah yeah I know that how to read and write it right yeah right yeah again that's becoming a bit of a lost art and certainly. You know I think just the arts in general that there's so much to it by which the electric chair ought to music it was amazing history behind it and I think now there is some sort of kind of recognition coming again like with my generation we're trying to reconnect to our history and engage with the arts again but I think it's really nice it's coming back kind of yeah well I hope so because I think there's more to Punjabi culture than just Bhangra dancing and been Rummy's Geffen only really is I mean the job has disappeared so history will if let's share music especially the folks least like the folks on. If you listen to them and compare them to Bangalore you'll be like you know what's exactly because it's all just the one machine and the same old stuff but. Videos are pretty much atrocious on bike. And it's interesting because of the parts of other states in South Asia and in India the good job community try to community a very good with their representing their culture and their traditions. And on the and what not and same south south India as well so they will really keep their traditions and cultures alive whereas been job it's focused on on that one style of music and that's that sort of seems to be the be all and end all isn't it really. But to me what else are you going to be working on in the future. And the future currently facts Thomas project just want to know I'm also looking for. And kind of went to church later to the project can be really it's going to be or pardon the expression hopefully next year. I am working on and then I'm also working on another project that we're gender actually called ticking me where we're looking at a play by ship commander. And we kind of translated into our own version of courtship in. Which is really very interested I'm really looking forward to write the rest just on this writing playwright hidden star. Well Ok repinned it's been a pleasure speaking to you keep us posted on some of the projects you going to be working on. Hopefully you'll bring this to the northwest as well. Take care thanks for joining us. Poet and curator I'm going to leave you with another classic this is again Judy on that jump bites from studio this is.
