When it's at Good Morning Let's start the day's forecast in Scotland where it's going to be a pretty filthy starts the day an awful lot of rain around and a lot of surface water and spray through the air made for example tricky driving conditions the one exception to that general rule is the show. Dolls Well children started off cool but dry and fine and sunny and that's the way it's going to stay there for the greater part of the day elsewhere a slowly improving picture such that by the middle part of the afternoon I think the rain will become confined largely to the organelles and then burn through the north east of the mainland and into the central belt by this stage for the most part it'll be light and touchy many areas will still be cloudy the Western Isles in the Far West the mainland just seeing a wee bit of sunshine to finish off the day temperatures in a range of $12.00 to $15.00 and as Northern Ireland Let me with your straightforward here the last of the overnight rain may just be hanging on to the coast of entre and a bit will soon be away in the morning the cloud will beginning to break and then I think most of Northern Ireland will see a dry find and sunny day and that's should be the way it stays right on into the afternoon and the early evening temperatures in the range of 13 to 16 and fine if the day to England and Wales are pretty Wordstar for many central and western areas of in winter and also all of Wales come the afternoon the rain a good deal more patchy I think it will become largely confined to Wales and the southwestern corner of England further to the east the cloud may well thicken up during the morning to give the OP in peace a rain but this will die away too in the afternoon leaving you with a lot of cloud sunshine really in short supply and as a consequence the temp is only 12 to 16 degrees Lavery the weather thanks Phil just out of work it's really a look at some headlines on the papers today Johnson can legally stop bricks it extensions says the telegraph which has the Prime Minister's drawn up plans to sink the remain as Bale if they vote against having a general election today is contradicted by the front page story in The Times Johnson in retreat over delay to bricks It says The PM has assured ministers he will abide by the law what is your plan Boris asked the Daily Mail it's got piece right by the culture section Nicky Morgan. She says despite the resignation of the road she's going to give the prime minister the necessary support to strike a deal. To Dublin amid fears of more resignations in the Guardian this is 5 lobbies for 50. Good morning B.A. Flights grounded could their reputation be about to hit some turbulence. With. British Airways pilots went on strike at midnight grounding just over $1000.00 flights affecting almost $3000.00 of them just about if your trips cancelled What are your rights will be asking a travel expert union leaders have launched a stinging attack on the prime minister as they demand the government rule out to no deal breaks it with the head of the team you see branding him worse than that but why do you believe no deal is such a big mistake when it means a clean break from Europe will be blinding out morning Louise what you're looking at property giant into owner of the Trafford shopping center in Manchester is trying to find partners to take it private. In the stock exchange willing to share price has collapsed but who would want to buy into. A property giant that owns so many shops and retail sites. Wake up to money from under the Dubai but it appears more and more people are also shopping online embed we want to know whether your online shopping is moving to the we small hours or less the most unusual place that you've placed an order online get in touch about anything this morning 85058 or use the hash tag wake up to money on social media online shopping Louise. Busy working mom had to buy some bottle brushes this weekend because our water bottles were looking a bit well unpleasant no idea where to buy them on the heights. Couple of minutes on a well known website on Saturday night about 10 o'clock after much more complaining done and dusted so easy and I actually did some online shopping whilst in a shopping center recently which just seems completely counter-intuitive but there we go we're talking a lot more about that later in the program but of course the big story this morning is about British Airways the 1st 48 hour walk up by pilots began at midnight this is the 1st time British Airways pilots have gone on strike it will mainly be focused at Heathrow and Gatwick and it is about pay and conditions now if you take a look at the website we have done so this morning just looking at Heathrow and 350 flights are canceled just 73 flying and of course there's going to be a knock on effect later on passed that 48 hour window because pilots need to be in the right places before the planes can take off and passengers are being told not to go to the airport although B.A. Says most have made alternative arrangements and there's going to be another strike later in September and some of the papers this morning even talking about more strikes a Christmas lease. Be a 4300 pilots who are members of the Union it's estimated that the strike costs B.A. About 40000000 pounds a day affecting around 1600 flights about 145000 passengers a day in total there for you to looking almost a quarter 1000000 passengers that have been affected. It is interesting because of course British Airways for some time to sort of be moving to slightly lower cost model you know taking away food and stuff to compete with Ryanair Easyjet the low cost carriers and $1.00 area where the cost structure is some would say still slightly out of whack is the pay that pilots and captains. In particular get be I mean apart captain it's the can can receive something like $200000.00 pounds a year now that would be significantly more than the low cost airline so I wonder if this is an attempt by British Airways to try to bring those costs and although of course they did get offered a half percent pay deal over over 3 years which is almost 4 percent a year which is better than average wage growth in this country but of course what the pilots are saying is that they had very small paying creases and now things financially are looking good for British Airways they want to share in that share in the profits it's looking a lot better they've made good profits but passengers of course are the ones who are badly affected even though be a says most have been reshaped jeweled Here's Kenneth Farrington one of the 300000 people affected I got text message. Stating that me flight was cancelled and it didn't give any explanation whatsoever. It just obviously give you a chance on what you call which you. Couldn't get through on the phone. Spent basically all evenin. Didn't sleep very well because it just taught me how it was in ruins while also with us this morning Simon French chief economist for Pan mail Good Morning Simon very good morning to you and that is one of the biggest impacts on British Airways reputation the uncertainty and of course there was the disastrous messages emails that went out to people saying flights were canceled but weren't canceled leaving people really just scrambling to figure out what on earth they should do and it's that reputation that costs long term that's correct you're looking at forward bookings for the future future months and you're looking at holiday makers business travelers trying to calculate what is the risk of disruption and the more events like this you have and you mentioned that maybe it is a further disruption on the 27th of September maybe further to structure Christmas will pare back the enthusiasm to book 3 British Airways particular in some of those competitive rates whether it will ease was rightly saying they have cut costs on those competitive routes where you have alternatives it will be likely at the margin that consumers will start to go with competitors share price down almost 40 percent in the last year. How much is that due to wider problems of the airline industry or how much is that due to the problems that the the risk quite a bit of uncertainty in the airline industry particularly at the margins can be maintained we have seen a number of operators not least Thomas Cook come under an awful lot of pressure and therefore I would say the move from 7 pounds down towards 4 pounds on the I.A.G. Share price which is the group that it owns which share ways is indicative of quite a bit of sector concern particularly that where what economists call the light cycle around the world concerns over economic growth a lot of our most profitable route to our business or web business travelers are making significant trips where the margins are the best if the economy slows down there will be concerns or hit be a disproportionately to some of the budget carriers more business people profile. Than the than Ryanair or easy Jet. And it is difficult as well because we're at a point in time where people are deciding whether or not they want to fly whether or not and about breaks it all they concerned about climate change and we were talking to Tim Jeanes from Nuki airport last week he was saying with all this disruption he's going to make people think twice maybe even 3 times about whether or not to pay for a flight you know I would you know I was thinking that about our summer holiday plans I think we should we can we really justify a flight but I thought well it's not that far it's a little short haul flight but is something I've been thinking about now is affecting But you must travel the time for work this is one of the problem yes and one of the challenges is also to their own history is technology is becoming better and better in terms of virtual interaction across across meetings and therefore there is also pressure from companies saying look do you need to be in front of the client or can you do this through through video link card effect to be teams of communicating which means that actually quite inefficient way of getting getting business people connected I don't fancy a virtual beach so I'm just not going to work I don't know it could be quite soon right away you could see exactly the right temperature couldn't you exactly know what wind you know to be the perfect but I'm perfect sand yeah I'm a bit U.V. Lighting. And we can we can go and have a look shop online always maybe do in the wee small hours anyone listening at the moment to wake up to money might be have their tablet inflow into front of the might be doing a bit of online shopping because it is incredible Now most of us do this in the most peculiar places and at the most peculiar times and new survey says more and more of us are doing this late at night and while women make most of the purchases 2 thirds men spend more and you talking sometimes about huge ticket items holidays and things. Yeah but then it's between midnight and 6 o'clock in the morning I'm not sure I do my shopping after midnight be honest but because I got to get up so early I probably do do a little shopping 1st thing it's quite interesting says John Lewis has put this survey out today and I'm having a look at the list of things that people buy and on there are things like wallpaper in bed this is when you're lying in bed taking a look around think you know see check over number 11 is do you cover. Lying under your do you by looking down at the. Tassie is a few holes in it maybe I don't buy or do you do which it has to say Do you buy covers the pretty old I was thinking about the other day when someone apparently men are the ones that spend the most to us late night online shopper not a late night shopper but I tell you saying something unusual places you've done the commerce and this is very naughty of me I have turned on my bicycle as I'm cycling one hand on the handle. And using is Luis A well known online retailer because it is relatively easy to 3 clicks and you can write it down you can and have you moving at the time so I expect a call from the constabulary if you were moving I'm also I was moved to confession talk I was just going to gloss over that one the way. I was going to move on to kind of just confessed not going to be very. Quickly like I mean only he did shopping online in a shopping center he said because the new terminals in Al Gore implicitly slow so he was using his phone instead and that is it that sort of click and bricks thing that many retailers are making the most of now it depends on the technology and sometimes your phone is is a good thing we've got one here from Phil in Bonnie Raitt who says online shopping sitting on the toilet while this is going to wake up to money may be too much information. We do want you messages though. This morning if I have a 5 day or use the hash tag wake up to money I'm sure not doing his online shopping on the toilet this morning is only Garcias I'm playing you know and when I'm listening to all of you I'm I'm doing my own shopping. For a tie for a shirt. Very nice where you can multitask Rico Yes I can multitask while I'm doing this wake up the money program I can also do my shopping on my phone well I imagine that while you've been doing the shopping on your own you've also been taking a look at the headlines Nissen again Nissan again then the this morning Danny the chief executive here auto psychotic has basically signaled that he is ready to step down and pass on his role to the next generation because he came up with comments saying that the that he may resign imminently So the trouble the Japanese carmakers board is jus to meet later today and Mr psycho has come. Under increasing pressure after it was revealed that had been that he had been overpaid and of course the company's profits have also been under pressure over the past year and this could mean the exit off Mr psycho and potentially we could see a new C.E.O. At Nissan Motor over the next maybe 24 to 48 hours another subject we talk about a lot is the China U.S. Trade war and having quite a significant impact on exports how I see the numbers overall it's really I mean the fall was more than expected the Luis exports from China to the U.S. Falling by 16 percent from the previous year and that is a much sharper decline than what we saw in July when exports fell by 6 and a half percent It also doesn't help when you also have a weak export numbers to Europe South. Reus Chaldea and South East Asia and the what could make matters worse because that was for the month of August on September the 1st I mean Washington announced a full I mean fresh 15 percent that of on a wide range of Chinese goods so this is really a major concern that we may see a sharp economic slowdown in China which means that China could try to pump prime its economy by implementing fiscal and monetary. Initiatives to be able to stabilize the economy from this ongoing trade war between the Americans and the Chinese OK thanks very much indeed you with us the rest of the week the weekend you know what because I'm still jet lagged from my visit to London I do not shop online from midnight until 6. EX them will the next time you were you do that shopping sensibly my way or. Absolutely Manchester and London can catch you later Rico Thanks Elise let's have a quick look at the papers and we were just talking obviously about trade and of course some of the American tech giants also being hit by those Chinese U.S. Trade was interesting piece in The have tea this morning about Apple preparing for the era of devices beyond the i Phone So they're expected to launch a new Apple Watch at the annual hardware event taking place tomorrow and I was with my 14 year old nephew at the weekend who's waiting eagerly for the next i Phone to be introduced my daughter waits eagerly and she will continue to wait to see how expensive they are nice story on the B.B.C. Radio 5. This is wake up to money with Louise Cooper me down in Houston lots of people getting in touch this morning about British Airways going to talk about that now Ross in Oxford said given the choice I'll not fly with British Airways again I currently take at least 4 commercial flights a month and Roy in Rugby says Why fly when train and sea travel is so much more enlightening the signal reach range the food so good I get to render sleep motions think I do on boat reality on by it's really an option for me gotta take those tablets before you go because all not fun but motions to contrary. Have not quite that bad there's a tilt in trying to Manchester I don't have anyone else out there feels the tilting trains make them on well yes there you go Well a lot of people obviously choose flying because it's quick and comfortable but from today well many people are going to be affected by the 1st British Airways pilot strike they started midnight 48 hours walk out over pay most British Airways flights being canceled over the period after about the pilots' union rejected the company's pay offer of 11.5 percent over 3 years well McCall 1st is a commentator at the Holiday price comparison website travel supermarket and joins us this morning morning Emma Good morning this is unprecedented because although the airlines no stranger to industrial action this is the 1st time pilots have gone on strike and there is huge disruption it is it's the 1st time in the airlines 100 year history and that's the sense scenery which had planned celebration of enslaver the August Bank Holiday weekend when customers were being let known by B.A. Their flights have been cancelled I mean talk about timing and it cause real anger there with balloons animation on the Twitter page and people. Were having their travel plans put up in disarray but I mean there's been other instances Dani there's been obviously lots of I.T. Glitches in the last few years cancellations delays that only a few weeks ago 130 flights were canceled to hundreds of late due to another I.T. Glitch and stuff walkouts but cabin crew walked out there's been lots and lots of cabin crew walkouts in the last 10 years and then there was a data breach last year and if you remember in there that compromise around was around 400000 customers e-mail addresses so yes this is the 1st pilot strike but there's been all sorts of other disruption in the last few years and we're seeing huge disruption of the British Airways we took a look at Heathrow this morning and it was a sea of red whereas of course we had the Ryanair pilots went on strike last month without causing too much chaos Why is the difference well yes Ryanair didn't cancel any flights these were canceled more than 2 weeks in advance of the flights going the cynical would say that's because B. A could avoid compensation payouts they say it's because they want to give customers lots of notice I mean you're right if you're traveling it's no consolation really if you've been bumped in on another day with a be a flight now if you're traveling through Heathrow Gatwick I guess about half the flights at Heathrow will be grounded today if they think it's a faith it got wake so there's going to be fewer planes in the ass Actually it should be quite smooth but there's likely to be disruption on Wednesday once they strikes have ended just because of crew and aircraft being in the wrong place is probably. There is a really busy time to be striking it September as we know holiday season if you've not got school aged kids you're going to be taking advantage of those cheap holiday prices so it's a really busy time for these strikes to hit and I've heard of you know it's not just holidays it's business trips it's weddings it's honeymoons all sorts of things that have been a fag says Have you seen why your website the people there for less likely to book would be a in the future is the cause that's the risk to be. That sort of damages their brand substantially so much in the choice is fair as you can imagine people saying that they won't travel mainly because the way that they have handled they say this people's rights and then there's the experiences that customers have had with a over how those rights have been communicated and they should have been pretty communicated but the e-mails I've seen they basically said on the e-mail you can have a refund but it's unlikely you're going to be able to travel and you're going to have to travel on another day the reality is. They airline has to get you there as quickly as possible and as close to your you know arrival time as possible and they should have been booking people on alternative flights today but I've heard of stories of people being booked 2 days early they had to go out on Saturday and actually they wanted to they wanted to stick to their own day and they can get through 40000 people try to get through and they were mistaken e-mail sent out as well you know and because there was so much trouble getting through people thought right I've got to grab a flight with a different airline they took the refunds and then that flight because of supply and demand and surges on prices meant it cost them a lot much more money and so you are if you're out of pocket now because B. I didn't put you on a flight themselves and cough up the money themselves you're going to not want to maybe fly with that line again although that has to be said British Airways is not here to defend itself so we need to be you know be slightly careful to be balanced . In terms of the compensation then I thought the airlines had the had to either refund you or but you on another flight flight they were under. What is the law there so the people who have booked another flight yet you can you get a refund all they can book you on to an old light so you can choose to take a refund and book on an alternative like you can but the problem was that it cost the flight prices are going up so much that it was really expensive to do that you needed. To get be a to do that for you so you went out of pocket but you couldn't get through. Well you didn't realize your rights because they weren't set out in the manner and then not getting through I mean it was 240000 passengers affected with literally weeks to go I mean again that's that's no I imagine the sort of demand the customer service team normally gets at British Airways it's quite difficult to deal with that kind of them on it was particularly as mistaken emails were sent out saying your flights canceled and then people go to another e-mail 17 hours later some people saying or actually we made a mistake so there was so much so much to Mons on on on on the service at the time . But I tell you we're safe in terms of cancellations if you will traveling and you know delayed by more than 3 hours then it is a reason within the airlines control you can actually see compensation in the next few days if you're faced with any any disruption as well M.R. Of course we were talking earlier about people being put off from taking flights going forward with potential for more disruption not just from British Airways What should people do to make sure they're protected well travel insurance doesn't pay out very much actually I think it's about knowing your rights so realizing that you know you can find the airline and they can book you into a different service Keep your receipts if you if you are having to travel out for longer than you intended as you can get your combination back the airlines should book that for you so just being aware really and. I think I think yeah right just know your rights that's the best thing to do OK thank you very much indeed Emma call this commentator at the Holiday price website travel supermarket we are going to be talking to the boss of B A A little bit later on if you've got questions for him get in touch by the 58 or use the hash tag wake up to money and that will be just after 8 o'clock Simon will get a bit of pushback on your confession about riding a bike in using a phone Steve is not happy. That you don't think about to do faces looking down or seeing a series you know going on like that I needed a spare these breaks are right let's move on to the markets property joined into owner of the Trafford shopping center in Manchester as well as the lakeside center in Essex is seeking partners for a buyout to delist the company and take it private again its time on the stock market has not been good for shareholders the share price has been a bit of a disaster falling from almost 4 pound 20 in 2010 to 36 P. On Friday with us Simon French chief economist for paneer Gordon markets got a bit of a wave form this of this story on Friday afternoon share price bounced a bit but the real question is you know I mean even today we've got some latest figures about footfall on the high streets and they're pretty terrible why would anybody want to either lend to or buy into a property company highly exposed to retail for 2 reasons I think if you look at the into portfolio and decide that they have been quite inefficient at replacing and increasing the number of stores that want to locate in the shopping centers then you might think well actually I could do a better job of managing this estate and that becomes attractive for the 2nd reason which is the price you mentioned the share prices plummeted from more than $4.00 pounds to less than 40 pain now but like Mark Twain said buy land they're not making any more of it there is an element here of if you think over the long term that a physical premises the you potentially could do a change of use down the track or or indeed evolve with the way to the different ways in which we're consuming because there are some successful retail sites out there but they need to be attracting customers in for not just the shopping experience that has to be a leisure and. Parents the need to be all the connectivity if you feel you can put in the money to to make that a better experience than their profits to be made and it's a bit of a quantity time as well it's being reported that debt covenants may be breached and what does that mean and why is that important so to property companies like into banks are known banks will lend them conditional on the value of the underlying assets so if the valuation of these these centers force to a certain level they will be in breach of the terms it's a bit like entering negative equity on your on your mortgage your bank will be concerned about that it's similar with property companies these debt covenants start to require that companies like Into the Real Estate Investment Trust start to take corrective action maybe have to sell assets to ensure that those financial ratios remain in balance with what their lenders are requiring as like a mood of the rule the rules associated with the debt that they've got correct we're turning to retail rate let's go on to the European Central Bank. Rate setting meeting this week last one with Mario Draghi in charge before Christine Legarde takes over likely to be more stimulus because of the state of the eurozone economy that's correct the German economy which is the biggest one in the Eurozone is quite possibly enter into recession in the 3rd quarter there is persistently low inflation and the European Central Bank has a 2 percent inflation target so they need to take corrective action to try to address both those things part of that may well be buying more government debt in the euro zone to try and push down interest rates but also in sort of a you think you a quantity raising Yes and they've already bought about 4 trillion euros worth of assets there may be more to buy and there is a 2nd tool that they can use which is to cut already negative interest rates further but of course there are concerns that it is losing its effectiveness because of course negative interest rates to try. Deter people from saving and go out and purchasing but already negative interest rates there is limits to how far you can go before people just want to take their money out and hold it in cash and just quickly Morrison's is due to report Harvey a profits the day quite it's been doing OK but there are you know given the retail environment some concerns and particular is quite interesting this deal with Amazon I guess the concerns of the business is again some difficult comps aside some difficult comparisons with last year's trading which was benefited by the very warm weather but also you're right to say that investors were looking at the tire put the comma's partners because there's still pressure margins from those discount retailers who are continuing to eat into market share they're getting double digit digit increases in their sales unlikely that Martians would be able to achieve anything like that of the neuter the success of the in Little who don't deliver so online is one area where you can compete without the middle because they don't do it some in French Thank you critical currency markets a pound buys a dollar 23 and one pound buys one euro eleven's and surprisingly this morning bricks it still dominates the front pages of most of the papers and news websites Johnson in retreat over delay to breaks it says The Times The Telegraph Johnson can legally stop breaks it extension is going to be another momentous week I mean Parliament I got I call it The Daily Mail one What is your plan Boris it's a question. Definitely has a question at the question mark at the end of it what is your plan Boris seems to suggest the Daily Mail lead writer doesn't quite know well today the 2 you see the umbrella group for workers has launched a scathing attack on the prime minister over plans to push forward with a no deal Brecht's it they are urging M.P.'s to hold their nose against Boris Johnson's tactics ahead of a fresh Commons showdown over his demands for. A snap election that of course is juiced take place later today Kate Bell is the head of economics for the 2 you see morning Kate good morning now we can tell clearly that this is a very difficult time everybody has an opinion on breaks it our messages this morning you've been absolutely full of people talking about breaks it Frances O'Grady has been warning the brakes it would be a disaster for working people how while we know it would mean higher fuel prices and more expensive shop we know the government's I research is likely to destroy good British jokes and to see why it is full and of course we're already seeing money being you know spent on the preparations that could be spent on our public services. But with these no deal preparations Surely that is prudent because we can't at this moment say that we won't leave the E.U. Without a deal so they need to spend that money. On the responsible prime minister will be even contemplating taking us out of the of Europe without a dale we know it has left his office effects on our jokes who are seeing businesses facing uncertainty we're already seeing you know the risk of job losses in our car industry and that's why we're calling you know we're calling on the government to take no deal breaker off the table for good and of course the government might we do need to make sure that happens because well we just can't risk you stated a fact that it will cost jobs it will damage the economy and yet when we voted to leave it hasn't damage the economy many people would say short term there may be some disruption but long term better growth prospects are in the better the rest of the world for friendship you know the Italian economy hasn't grown for 20 years the French economy is got its own problems and even Germany is entering recession so tying ourselves to an economic bloc that isn't growing so fast as the rest of the world actually that might not be the best economic interests of the U.K. Long term actually for you know for Bush in working with people the British working people I'm just giving the opposite argument for British working people actually leaving the E.U. May be the best thing. Well I think we can say that the economy thing particularly well in the moment I think in the 1st half of 21000 we saw G.D.P. Was I think the 3rd lowest among developed countries so I you know I think looking our own prospects we're not doing great and of course that other things we need to date at least our economy to you know we're talking about how we desperately need a new deal for people we need more investment in the good job for across the country and there is going to threaten this prospect you know it's the government's I'm a surcharge telling us that it's going to damage the economy and we just don't think we can ship taking those risks of people's jobs and their wages OK let's move away from breaks it just for a moment because one of the things that the T.C.H. Talking about today is class and a call for legal measures to tackle discrimination at work based on class what do you concerns while we publish new recession I shine once again something that might keep an eye but if you're hung. Around too often the odds are stacked against you on your research shows that if you're a graduate if your parents come from a professional job professional background you're twice as likely to get into a high paying job so that you're paying 30 grand and that is just after graduation then if you're from a working class background that follows from the government science I should mobility commission shank working class people earn about 8 ground a year less on average even when they enter professional jobs and we think it's time to tackle this. Recording new. Employees can I don't get discriminate on the basis of class just like I can't discriminate on the basis of gender or race. How would you do that we've seen the gender pay gap do you expect some sort of like I mean do you think a law similarly like private educated children and state educated children and what the what that gap is in companies is that what you're looking for specifically is that what you're looking for Yep Absolutely we're calling for new measures to ask employers to report their class and actually this is something some employers are already doing the civil service for example started monitoring the background of where people start because they recognize that the problem places like the B.B.C. Take We also I think we need stronger legal rights if you gave think saying a job interview some of this crisis because of the way speak because of where you're from because of your background you can take action and ask the recording on a need for a new Katie on government bodies and public bodies to have to tackle class inequality which of course ship the job but of course this is just potentially more workplace regulation so when you think about smaller businesses haven't they already got enough on their plate while we saw with the gender pay gap reporting actually we had a lot of business is about you know how's the burden that actually businesses were able to comply and it really started out by we needed about gender pay gap in the workplace be sensible to look at you know could you find your gender pay gap reporting with your class reporting for example you're already asking people about their background when they're. Thank you it should be a sufficient additional burden on businesses but really we think it's time that you know we stop prejudice except for that you know we're still experiencing this kind of day to day kind of discrimination in 2019 OK Kate Bell head of economics at the T.C. Thank you very much we'll let you go I know you've got a busy day ahead of you I got to interrupt here actually we've got data this morning from Cambridge University that showing thing that 68 percent of children have now got into Cambridge University from state schools that is up from last year all given only 7 percent of the children in the country are privately educated clearly there is still a big gap because Cambridge and Oxford have been very criticised for not taking off state school students but just those numbers are out this morning. Interesting numbers Louise will keep an eye on that and I will revisit that one again we're going to stick with bricks it but now we're going to take a look at it from the consumer point of view and we've been talking about travel this morning but now how do you break to proof your holiday Well your eternal says break to preview holiday stuff here according to their website and we've spotted similar messages from travel companies like Euro camp and Toohey as the industry tries to reassure passengers that they should still book holidays abroad despite the breaks it uncertainty with junkie fears Director of Public Affairs that get link you're a tunnel parent company which has spent 30000000 pounds getting ready for break that they carry about 60000 passengers a day and your eternal says there's a quarter of all U.K. Trade passes through the Channel Tunnel 3 and a half 1000000 lorries a day morning Joe. Good morning is $300000.00 a day just to clear that we're not $300000000.00 a day would be beyond our capacity but a community that would be quite impressive yes 3 and a half 1000 lorries this is still impressive I think one figure we have got right is the 30000000 what if you spend that on absolutely that that's been spent on preparations for the trucks going through the Channel Tunnel so that they can get through border controls without any hassle. Of the Channel Tunnel is that speed in frequency is in a no deal situation we had additional controls at the border that could slow things down so we've spent the money on building additional parking for trucks and for putting in signage to ensure that they can be routed to the right destination and essentially putting in place systems so that a truck which is pretty close to its goods can be scanned as it arrives at the time . Tunnel and then jure in the crossing the customs controls can be done on line so that when it arrives on the other side just drive straight through what about consumers because I only took the euro tunnel with the car last half term coming back on the fight a of half term and it was absolute chaos we were there for hours and I've also done your time on the last Sunday in August quite a few years in the right and that was pretty chaotic as well so my experience is you can even cope with the A Sometimes you can't cope with a big travel day just because the school holidays level in bricks it was the days you mention are of course the peak and the coming back from France into the U.K. There's always been a 100 percent control of passports by border force on behalf of the home office so that's where the the time taken on the way back in every car with every person in it has the passport control is the government unfortunately won't shut down for she won't change its approved British government policy is 100 percent controls coming into the country. So that's not really a bricks it issue a standard immigration process that we have today John I was talking to a holy who's been working with the Department for Transport on these back to plans for a good couple of years and his concern is although you have parking areas for lorries that don't have the appropriate paperwork he doesn't feel that there are enough parking places and once you get a couple in the queue that is then going to have a knock on how many parking places do you have where on the French side we've got a 100 parking spaces and knowing new search bays that have been built in association with the French during their customs or forty's and they've been built to ensure. To do one to have enough capacity to do whatever physical controls they need without disrupting our. As it goes through the tunnel on the other side one of the issues is of course making sure that everybody who turns up every truck that turns up has the right paperwork in electronic form and so we're working with the government in the U.K. To ensure the traffic is filtered to make sure that only the ready traffic gets through to the tunnel and anybody who hasn't got that type of work will have to do the work in a turn back parking space somewhere else around the country and they'll be facilities provided for them to get in touch with customs clearance facilities so they can get their paperwork and then proceed so the goal is about making sure that those who get to the tunnel all those who are prepared John just really briefly were about 10 seconds you seeing a fall in passenger numbers going forward. The passenger numbers bookings are still very strong and of course we're giving everybody a guarantee that if there is a hick up somewhere along the line then they can modify their booking without any charge I plan to give them bank here Director of Public Affairs that from Wake up to money. is B.B.C.
