News It's 3 minutes past 7. In this with a talent for Rubicon one B.B.C. Radio mantra star and B.B.C. Radio in Lancashire. Hello welcome to it as if you've just joined us here on B.B.C. Radio Manchester B.B.C. Radio Lancashire thank you for your company tomorrow just begin to we were speaking to a little while back about V.P. Media and the rugger boys also coming out and if you remember they featured on India's last year but they're back in April as well so hopefully we're going to have a jamming session in the studio for Indus and this nation look forward to that. But coming up in this hour a team of surgical staff have flown off to India to perform free lifesaving cardiac surgery on babies and children we speak to the founder of the challenge. Students past and present from the University of Manchester gather to rates funds for their prayer center that's been used for over 15 years and we'll hear from some of those who attended the special event. The U.K. Asian Film Festival is underway and this. It will run across 5 U.K. Cities including Manchester and I will be speaking to the festival's creative director later on. And then it's an age old South Asian stringed instrument we speak to player all the sub continent's most popular instrument the several. I mean one of the Asian Dari at the end of the program but music now and this is for all of you to be mocking the festival of colors from the iconic film Surely this is a good thing in Chile. That. You . Have to look at that heat that you know the 5 piece. Yeah I know her. I know that it's just not me. Can't you imagine. The. My finger on why not I meet. The out. My. I. Was the one you're already. Would say live on. Other. Both the UP THE up the fact that. The let's. Let's. Turn to personal. Lives. In a. Movie said. Look these are. The ones that. Are good. Enough to look. For. And they're looking. Forward. To Exactly. The way. The. Lives. Of Our Lives. Can. Let. Us. Listen. There you go a lovely old classic there from the film Sholay I'm happy holly 2 years later on we're going to be speaking to our reporter needled Barak on how they've been celebrating Holi how these 4 men are and Temple and also they've been doing a special prayer for all the victims at Cross Church to Simone that later on in the program it's now 10 minutes past 7 now team of surgical staff are flown off to India to perform free lifesaving cardiac surgery on babies and children the camps being organized by charity called Healing little hearts and funded by parents from Alder Hey hospital in Liverpool the founder of the charity is consultant pediatrician Dr Sandy even a charity and he joins me on the line now good evening reading So welcome to the program 1st of all sundry Now why did you start this charity. Started charity because the absolute shocking statistics that exist around the world which are the fact that there are $1000000.00 children dying every year across the developing world from on treat heart disease saving little hearts was was started and sound to try to make differences absolutely massive problem right now what exactly as I mentioned in the introduction the teams going out to India so what exactly will the team do there do they have access to surgical theater. Yes So volunteer doctors who are going to a small town yard about it and they will operate operating say. They will operate on babies children teenagers born with heart disease heart defects who don't have access to treatment otherwise because of lack of skills locally a lack of capacity. Now it's interesting you say lack of skill and capacity considering the number of medics that we have out in the Asian subcontinent so do they welcome this extra relief work from yourselves over there. Yeah very much so because 1st of all the number of children waiting for surgery today are absolutely enormous but also what we do we don't just operate on children we go and train and power local doctors and nurses to be able to carry out the treatment in the fullness of time themselves so we partner with hospital the hospital for about 3 or 5 years and teach them simple and then cited more complex and increasingly complex surgery and then in the fullness of time they become independent that's our bottle which is why they welcome us readily right and there is a reminder how long how long have you been doing this for now 11 years and I mean you know right I am I take it you come across all sorts of cases in stories about individual 3rd Tell us a little bit about those people that you have helped. Yeah well we we know work and 11 countries and because they don't have the N.H.S. Where when we travel and the children really meets are usually more complicated than what we have in the U.K. Because of the time we beat them their heart and lungs have already been quite significantly damaged some There was one child who imagine in a place called which it was southeast and there who had a very. Severe problem with his heart one of his arteries that supplies the heart wasn't home properly his left side his left article wasn't working and the only option for him was lifesaving heart surgery now because his heart was so weak it's his heart didn't recover after surgery so what we had to do is we had to put him on a special machine we had to improvise in India and use a technique which we have found again Lester and supporters heart is artificial bypass machine supports heart for a period of 48 hours unfortunately his heart pounds back he bounced back he's now completely normal going to school and doing all that all the things that man have the child would do that's pretty amazing isn't it when you can reach out to someone like that in the young in the must be very rewarding to say the least but clearly you know this isn't cheap is it to go out there and help these individuals or how do you manage to support these projects when the Great British Public I've kept us going and every time I relapsed or to sick people I just completely shocked so essentially it costs us $6000.00 pounds to send a team out for a week I said these teams are consequences to volunteer doctors and nurses nobody charges a penny for the time it's entirely donated so when we go out at the cost of $6000.00 pounds the operator between Trevor to feed children to free heart surgery for at least $12.00 to $15.00 children are essentially boils down to $4.00 to $500.00 pounds per child is what our cost is that's the cost of a weekend in London or even a day in London. Depending where you're going of plays. But clearly when people hear about the stories and the individuals that you've helped. I suppose they feel compelled to help you maidenly they do unfortunately very very few people know about the statistics I mean although about malaria cholera rightly so but I think in the 21st century people don't know not knowing that there are 1000000 children die every month you treat it hard to see AIDS. We need to address that and these sorts of interviews go a long way or the beginning of a process to address that and when people know about it then I'm sure the support will be even more overwhelming as it has been now you've raised the issue in the European Parliament as well to tell us about what T.V. Exactly said there. Well that was an incredible experience to address about 150 every piece of it I said exact same thing I said I can bet you there's not a single person in this pack room that knows about the statistics that in the 21st century a losing a 1000000000 children conquered Heartsease and sure enough there wasn't anybody there were completely gobsmacked and shocked and essentially very interested to help so I'm hoping. That there will be some access to European funding that's sort of a long term hand Bill how to process but the point was I managed to raise the profile of this massive massive problem that affects so many children across the world right and in terms of how people can help him I mean if they want to help the charity how can they get in touch. We have a Web site hitting little hearts dot all we are on Facebook we're on a different challenge of social media and the help will be very very warmly welcomed and very well received because without ongoing help we are not going to look at the obvious life saving operations and spare these families the trauma the anguish the devastation of losing children from what are relatively simple operations in the scheme of things indeed evolve thank you very much for taking time out to speak to us and good luck with the work thanks very much like you've taken out by that stock to find even a Chinese a consultant paediatrician and he basically set out the charity called Healing little hearts which is funded by parents from all the hospital in Liverpool and it's going to the music just before traffic and travel this is bungee jumping. It's going. To take you straight. Songs that were it was. Too young to. Blame God with. Day. And of course produced by an altar boy bungee jumping You're listening to. What's happening on the region's roads his car. With. B.B.C. Radio munches star I'm thinking you see the radio Lancashire. B.B.C. Radio and B.B.C. Radio travel update we've been well good on the M 6 now where she said either way north and south it's not generally the M 16. Any big the light show not reaching right commit to solve it was Manchester. With a roadworks that the street is well. Sunday evening yes we're having. A generally round like share certainly through. To report Preston city center moving fairly well but if you would like to update me please. I. Just saw. The day. It cannot be just a year so you got to touch down. And don't start now with to drive around because I am going around now but. We met on a dock and a man and John to get out of a credit card take you back to my place to show you miles away you know that I'm on now back. Then and look at the dang me dead center of your friends to. Meet me here and. Then it was the same to any. Friends to turn up because here in the can be just a year well you would have faced I mean would have done you would have basically you can never start now I cut out the can be too but the SO nice to see you try to run Dave and all that Omani you better now can I ask. So funny and they never learned that happy thing upside down with nothing you're listening to in the center of B.B.C. Radio Manchester and B.B.C. Radio Lancashire now millions around the world have been celebrating the festival of color the in the celebration of a holy now law it's a loss for about a night and a day starting on the evening of the poor number and there's been a special prayer that's been taking place out the storm in Iran center in Preston but live from a little bit more from our reporter needle Parekh they've been quite busy having you know you welcome to the program you to your right as a guest thank you and happy whole Happy Family 1st of all you're happy Holi didn't go well for you you were down in London when you 1st yes oh. Only was you know a few days back in and as holy most arrival of spring and also obviously the festival of colors and a fire is lit depicting the burning of Holy cow and the significance of the actual fire burning is as the fire so to our inner demons and in comes out the light of the significance the Levy and also that people should. Also give a coke and. Then that's given as precious a holy food that's the last and then of course then comes the big holy fight let everybody it's all I would describe it like a huge water fight where everyone color each other and the water each was there and as the color we go that one another. It represents positivity and that's what it's all about positivity Now if you indeed now you've also done a 100 for the victims of the Christchurch massacre tell us a bit about Bob's OK Yes what we saw was. Some of the girls from the bus there my friends well it would be considered the same and I'm a homage to the cheapie. Extremely powerful peaceful and pull and it gives out the positive vibes and a form of praying so what we did yesterday we gave almost 3 hours all of trumping the mom and to each of the victims and for many it was a cause of those who have felt this pain as well but we feel this holy We again whatever goodness we do we want to. Pray for them to send all of them I mean the best we can to withstand the moments that as blessings all these Aaron and help them through this time and also must be is well underway on the side of the world but just showing. That we're with them as well I must both quite important isn't it for so many people in different communities to show support for those who lost loved ones Absolutely and I think you know even even over holy is the Festival of colors of positivity it's also about that togetherness that also showed the human spirit humanity and we believe that you know through the work of God And again I keep going back to the Mohamad the for us this is the highest form of life when we pray we jump or check the month and again we did a full day I was I think. That we were thinking that felt really good you know we could feel the difficulty and I was well. Of course and like you said it does take something out of you doesn't it but happy holly once again to you and thank you for joining the program this evening that I call a March I take it Bob I report to the needle Beric who had a special prayer as well for the victims of the Christ church massacre the Preston So I mean Ron temple there on the nature of the security on B.B.C. One your Exactly I think soldier let's go let's go come. From the makers of bodyguard probably got hijacked the Chinese called my on time wind up on the campus great place officers murdered in cold blood and your reply it inside information jumped on those where last you were with some tales and let them word Tell him you serious other dynasty to too long the extent of police corruption has been covered up there's no secrets in a scene as well starts next Sunday night at night on A.B.C. One. It's a sub 30 almost now students past and present from the University of Manchester got together to raise funds for their press center that's been used by students for over 15 years the MacDougall center is that the heart of student activity not just for praying but other social activities and I went along to the event and spoke to Muhammad Ali the university's Muslim chaplain student Kareem Mohammed in foreign minister a solicitor's support in the event but 1st the Hamid president of the Islamic Society told me a little bit more about the center they do the center is our main prayer hall on campus it's the biggest prayer hall in a university campus in the U.K. It was opened around 10 to 15 years ago but since then it's kind of fell into disrepair the copper to become hard that mold outside the toilets and cracks in the wall things that so we wanted to renovate it basically now tonight was a fundraiser supported by yourself Afonso Why did you feel you had to get involved I thought this very important for the Muslim students students some of our noble when they commit University our students come from different cities different countries and I match them the chaplain and say some months ago and these gentlemen were worried about the way the mosque was looking at the moment and I said look you know we're in Manchester where a very very you know charitable community leave it to me. And they've all come together tonight been a success or raise in excess of 40000 pounds with circa 30000 and over all a fantastic evening let's turn to Mohammed who is also a chaplain I mean why the need for press center anyway as Muslims you can prayer anywhere can you really absolutely booked the press space already there the universe has given us the space and it's very normal for universities to ask for our side funding or donations and they were never going so we had one of our staff member speak to my about how it's important to give a space but then what we do with our space they were very generous in allowing us to do that as us what we. Thought well let's go to a community where beautiful generous was a community throughout the world and that's where their fun has eloquently put in Manchester we do it differently much as 10 we do better in my chest and so we thought well of trying to change the world what to start with the proper morsel of talked about which is talking to neighborhood talk with your closest neighbors top of the people around you I think space for all faiths students is important and this just happens to be for the multitude and I suppose in Chaplin is my main remit lots of people say well you know wherever there are groups of Muslim getting together young people who is issuing fear about radicalization of all those people who ask these rather difficult questions or have these assumptions how do you challenge that we call evidence don't we so it's sort of just having irrational fear we want evidence to try and combat these fears and evidence shows that actually does not happen in mosques or prayer rooms this is as be clear about this is the University of Manchester prairie it's not a mosque they allow the community to use it but it's very well managed my office is in there I'm a staff member I am accountable to the university and we have to follow very strict rules regulations regarding washers to and talk about all of us because of vetted people need to understand that there's all the reasons or ways that students over young people go out to coast and are unique problem to Muslim students who have the far right now who are also going to very extreme I behaviors and so I think we need to be to be careful when we label a whole community of people radical i just because of getting together the places where for worship as you see tonight a social space is pretty we can get together it's open anyone can use it all this university space is not only allowed for Muslims but it just happens to be the Muslims or the want to use it more regularly it's an open building anyone can see and I and I invite you to come and join us on the opening of it and see what we're doing in there my name is Karim in the Hammett So how important is the MacDougall center for women make their voices stream we use the phrase because it's a space that we have on campus that we can use all of these that we speak it's open 7 days a week and. It's a space where we can pray but it's this whole it's also socializing the people we can we are this is this we have weekly classes put on classes this week US is and it's a great opportunity for all this is the country gather and you know connect for the sake of the last one. That was a student Kareem Mohammed there and along with a farmer near and say the Hamid and Mohammed all of the universities Muslim chaplain talking about the MacDougall center and they did really well they managed to raise over 40000 pounds for the center and I have been invited on the opening social go down there absolutely are you listening to induce here on B.B.C. Radio Manchester and B.B.C. Radio Lancashire it's 734 now Bollywood icons in Amman is just a one of the famous names taking part in this year's U.K. Asian Film Festival the festival runs across 5 cities including Leicester and Manchester as well as London let's find out more I'm joined on the line by the creative director of the events Samir bomber Welcome to the program Samir thank you very much for having me well thank you for joining us this evening now general I'm quite happy that you have the legendary Zenit Amman appearing at the festival I just need to be down there for that really. How did you manage to bags in that the man tell me to be honest is probably one of the most difficult things I've ever had to do if someone told me 2 years ago I could do this I would not have believed I'm a better last year our guest star on the 28th edition of the U.K. And from $5.00 to $1.00 we had so many got it well and more had a con and simply said at the end you know what's a meter you need to get the net amount to come to this and I was like I've been trying I've been trying you know me and she said don't worry she's my best friend and I was sorted and true to how I went to India in October and she organized it all for me that's that's wonderful and Sim is actually a lovely personality as well isn't she is she is amazing so how. And the thing about the net is that she's not on any social media social norm Twitter Facebook Instagram she doesn't do any of that she very rarely does interviews she very rarely goes out and about so well that you had this needed also Simmias touch you know that I had a great time than at the net go to this festival I trust you have an amazing time and she agrees well that's really wonderful I mean growing up as a young lad you know she will the dream of many a young person I can assure you and I'm a good actress too and quite a bold actress as well considering the era that she was in absolutely I mean she's responsible for completely she in person party I mean more. Completely responsible for the change in heroines from you know being the traditional set the father 3 types to being contemporary to be to being to being sent to and doing those difficult different roles as a lead her or him and Normally those parts. But she's made them you know those She's brought those She's unmixed the heroine with the fam to create the lead woman. And she is ultimately responsible for that well it's wonderful that you've managed to bag and I'm just I just wish that you were able to bring her up to our region as well some time in the future perhaps but you do reach out to the regions because I know you also have Shabana Azmi as well giving masterclasses Bonnin in Leicester tell us a bit about Japan's involvement. So Sean is actually the reason RAF Estival started in the 1st place 21 years ago said Bart told our festival director Dr Joe that you need to start a film festival and and we'll talk to each other said how do I do that I don't know one she said you know me just invite me and they will come and they will happen and again so we had to pay a tribute to Shannon as involvement with the festival she's coming literally every few years and to come to give us a nudge to support us push us in a different direction. So this year Siobhan will be sharing an actor's Mosteller of a spotlight on how she's tackled and played some of those parts you know that thought process of that thinking that goes on before she becomes a spasm what's what's involved in all of that as well as she'll be talking about how she is supporting this village called mage of on and image one which one is now supplying chicken Gotti embroidery work to. Fashion House like management who throws. An entire village is employed because she has managed to give them skills and become the supplier to fashion Kitchener which is amazing you know I don't know how she does all of this by the way to have a career in film to be an activist to be championing women's rights to. So power entire village and one in place absolutely amazing and now we're going to be running out of time shortly but lastly you're coming to the northwest to Manchester in particular so what can we expect over here do you have details about what we can see over here yes we have 3 incredible film premieres taking place my favorite obviously is. Our medal which would be the opening film and what I like about it is you know these films are from a children's perspective so children become the lens and tell you their innocence stories and just completely how warm your heart up a new disk a laughing and cheering and so homage one of Mike Castle favorites thinking I'm sad as well and then there's no bomb and all the 3 from the Coming to home cinema in Manchester in May at end of April and anyway right OK back to talking about it we will absolutely talk to you come closer to the time but thank you so much for joining us this evening for me and good luck with the rest of it all right you take care now thank you that's Samir bomber there he is the creative director of the event the U.K. Asian Film Festival and it as you mentioned is coming to our region and we look forward to it and it's at the home cinema who recently had Pakistan where they looked at Pakistani cinema as well and that is quite a bit really so good on them so that's something to look forward to and certainly at the man I'll see if we can if there is a slight chance to bag an interview with a wonderful Zenith a man and most of you might just remember her insert them she runs on them the film which is quite revealing for her really and but she managed to break the mold as they say now let's find out what's happening on the region's roads his new car Carol. Travel update. On the M 6 No problem said the north or south or through the region it's on the move causing the big delays coming up Sunday no reported accidents or anything like that going up see some of situational moving we've just had reports of a police instant I'm just checking where it's because it's a fairly new report but it's on a. Search just off. 65 it's the main road that crosses through there which I believe is right at that point crossing near to the most why it's not junction but it's one of the roads that comes near that in and out of. Road heading out cost but that road is closed anyway near to intact area the side the block and I'm not sure what the instant is us on going but I'll get around the closure for the time being at least look at the rest of the road so we've got the problems of labor as well high street west a. Vehicle I say 57 that's a fact that in my fashion journey down slightly heading into Glossop if you would like to update me please call and that latest. And. Still to come we're going to be speaking to Maestro Samik and he's going to be coming to the northwest as well to perform with this wonderful instrument. We'll talk a little bit more about that after this. Turns a closer months didn't pay attention not me I didn't follow up listening to Bob Bashara. Problem. Right now good. To me. You get that was the date dollar as they say and for this and that he has the title track you're listening to induce him on B.B.C. Radio Manchester and B.B.C. Radio Lancashire now a stunning show combining archive film and music will saw well tour he K. This to bring So I just got a message image from the thought that he has in the wonderful material it says in the bed while I wasn't in I was I well there you go being corrected I was saying a stunning show combining our car film and music will tour the U.K. This spring the vivid programme which features work by legendary filmmakers at the Ray features accompaniment by sort of old star So Mick that the song Mick is one of the most prominent young U.K. Indie musicians and I'm really pleased to say he joins me on the line now to tell us a bit more how are you you're right. I'm very well I'm very well now you've been a busy man I think we spoke maybe about a year or 2 years ago perhaps I think it's quite back here Yeah so tell us about your latest project then. Well yeah I mean. I've always loved film and you know I'm a musician so this is a solo dream project where I've been able to put both together and give you know give my audiences. An experience where they can watch something which is rare and incredible and you know sort of thought provoking as well and listen to a live concert at the same time and actually I ended up doing 2 of these projects over the last few years and this U.K. Tour actually bring both of them together so there's a film in the 1st half with the concept Marine interval and then there's another film in the 2nd half with another concert so it's a marathon but it's had it's been incredible the start of the tour already and it's been going really well right and just to go back to talking about the instrument the federal put those the detonator Could you describe it for us please yeah sure I mean a lot of people you know when they think about instruments string instruments from India they think of the sitar. This that our adversaries both came into India with the Persians you know so this is around the 17th century 16th 17th century is when these instruments were developed so they play essentially the same kind of music which is Rog you know Rog's is what these instruments play and the road is very special because while the sitar has frets and it's completely made out of you know would. Serve road has many other materials used on it and it doesn't have frets so like the cello or the violin there's no indication of where the no is you have to chill it and it takes many years to sort of understand where the now is and be able to play the instrument not a difficult instrument by the founder of it then well I think all instruments are difficult you know depending on where you want to go with them you know what level of musicianship you want to reach but that's a road I guess you know of for people starting off it's it's a little tricky. Some acquitted you get your training from men who feel Bob. Well girl I I you know like a lot of Brits Asian kids I grew up here in the U.K. I used to live in London I went to school here and it was just by chance that I found out that my late grandmother used to play this around so there was a soldier home which I accidentally stumbled upon and and it suddenly the sound of it just connected with me and I wanted to see my dad you know during my school holidays he took me to call Qatar which is where our family is from and and he introduced me to a great Greatest Dad. Who has recently passed away but I learned from him for the last you know for 25 years I guess undef brother Dave. Was my was my stop right OK Well that's quite a journey isn't it and it clearly runs in the family now you're going to be coming nearer to our neck of the woods to Liverpool for this before I mean right so I mean for the audience what can they expect obviously they go archive film footage there and they got fantastic music from yourself as well and and accompanied by some of the other classics as well but what would you expect people to take away with them off to the concert as. Well. I think everyone takes away their own narrative from this experience but from my perspective what I love about doing this show is that you know connecting the cost. Because these films you know. They hold some of the oldest footage of India. You know some of them take back to the turn of the century you know so this is colonial India there is footage of Gandhi. And then further along there's this beautiful film by Sophie just great and it's all sort of speak black and white monochrome. You know kind of you are full Reg credible footage and it's humorous and it's. And it's also thought provoking because it makes you think about you know what the relationship was between the British. Who you know who were sort of in India at the time and the Indian that and it was a you know in many ways a problematic relationship but it makes you think about all these things and at the same time you know soaking in like the sounds are being produced alive by musicians by the City of London Sinfonia by a wonderful pianist out next week by a wonderful percussionist who plays the Irish bar on drums myself I'm on the SO road. So it's like there's a lot to take in past present East West Indian music Western music and I think you know most people from the shows that we've already done come out sort of really and rich and. Positive from the experience All right well we look forward to that spirit and positivity as well from yourselves but and hopefully we'll catch up with the time again but thank you for joining us this evening I know you need to rush off so hopefully we will speak to you in the near future but summit thank you so much thank you so much that all right I'll take care by that sonic that the subtle maestro and wonderful instrument to send it looking forward to that when they do come to the. Pool You're listening to induce here on B.B.C. Radio man just B.B.C. Radio and in a moment race Tom will join us for the good guide as well as quotation to stop to this. One up. Thank. You John.
