Radio Lancashire hope you'll excuse the fact that our weekly review of the weekend's football has been counseled as we remember Jimmy Armfield who's died at the age of 82 and one club man as a player a man whose hearts never left Blackpool when he called time on his playing days he was a man highly respected in sporting circles and in the community at large a man who had signed for everybody and was wise with his words well over the next hour we'll hear from former teammates managers of Blackpool past and present and with me in a studio a man who really valued his contribution and went all out to make sure a statue of his achievements out Blackpool was erected Glen Boley the former chairman of the Blackpool Supporters Association is here and Gordon Taylor the chief executive of the Professional Footballers Association will be joining as very shortly to talk about his role within football in general after 7 there's another chance to hear an interview with Jimmy Armfield which was recorded by the b.b.c. Last year with. So with the tonight through until 820 on b.b.c. Radio one show where as much as we're really sad about the loss of Jamie on feel that Sanaya really to celebrate the life and everything that he achieved within the world of football which is so so much and throughout this hour we're just going to reflect on exactly Jimmy on fields best bits of. Which there with so many glum Boley Good evening to you thank you very much for joining as it's a long time since we've seen your and we appreciate your time coming in tonight Jimmy Armfield it's pretty clear if you're a diehard Blackpool Football Club supporter he means more to you the most and yeah he did. The interesting thing with Jimmy as well is that you know he was but he was 82 and so many people of the younger generation next so much about him you know he last played for papa 971 and he's made James a career was over by sort of the late seventy's but then obviously 30 years of a distinguished career in broadcast is so so many people you know group within you know people like me listening to the radio girl with a and those pop will fungi only know know so much about it so it is a great loss and really sat down I remember being a very young man in a press box at Goodison Park coming the 1st time I met Jimmy on field who inquired to me how I managed to get my hair standing up quite as as well as I did but that an inquiry what product that I used which I found really here a sports a major outsold him and told him exactly how he could get his hands on a top of it should he lead it loads of people have taken to social media today this is where social media is at its best because people can let us know exactly what they're thinking of course it has its faults but today is just a couple of them this comes from Charlie Adam says it's a sad day for everybody involved at Blackpool the town of Blackpool and the whole of football in general I got to know Jimmy Jerry might sign that and he was Mr Blackpool as far as I was concerned he'd always be popping up on the training ground and not long on bro managers co that he used to wear and offering advice and words of support to the players Jimmy was a sort of guy you'd stop and listen to his opinions and advice were always spot on he had an incredible career for Blackpool and captain in England was a legend of the game I also thought his commentary was as good as anyone on the radio I was lucky to go to his 80th birthday party a couple of years ago and there were hundreds. People from the world of football there that night that showed just how popular he was I will always remember how happy he was when we got his team to the Premier League in 2010 him at the world saying that there's a great picture of Jimmy with me Brett Ormerod Gary Taylor flights and Ian Holloway which always makes me smile My thoughts are with his wife Ann and all the family at this time he will be missed r.i.p. Jimmy Armfield another one here which comes from Sir Bobby Charlton I'm deeply saddened by the death of Jimmy Armfield as an opponent's teammate and friend he was without doubt one of the most honest and genuine gentleman I've had the good fortune to meet I 1st got to know Jimmy Jaring our respective national service when we played in the same army sides Little did I know then our paths were crossed so often and it's still a privilege to think that I played for Manchester United in Jimmy's final much for Blackpool in 1971 as one of the 1st overlapping fullbacks he was always a dangerous opponents a little wonder he was regarded as the best right back in Europe in the early 1960 s. I was fortunate to play alongside him at the 1962 World Cup and although he didn't play in $66.00 he was never less than a positive influence on the squad as we went on to become world champions for the 1st and only time however I knew the man as well as the player and it was not spy chance that we stayed in touch for so long after we both retired I've missed listening to his or thorough city of radio commentaries and I will now miss seeing Mr Blackpool around the scene lady Norma and I send our condolences to Jimmy's wife and sons Duncan and John and the rest of their family lovely tributes from 2 players of completely different generations see it Glen and I think that really is the thing to be admired here is that you've made the point already Jimmy's career was over as a player in 1970 worn by the likes of Charlie Adam spoke to Keith's of and today was heartbroken. There are so many players and people of a generation that myself and yourself belong to that are equally really upset today yeah. And as you say that's the beauty of social media and you see people from past and present paying tribute and they all have a similar thing to say that it was just such a nice man you know and even as a Coke compensates you know that there's a lock Oh come they said that that you know are people like that some people don't but you never had anybody criticize Jimmy Armfield face Cocom in showing his opinions and his thoughts on the game that was so well respected which is obviously why so many people admired him and and you know if things live with the f.a. You know they they overstay appreciated and respected his thoughts which is why these the services Absolutely let's get one of our 1st reactions to die to the sad news that Jimi all feel this died 1st from the black hole manager Gary Baria as a sub for the football club. Football itself and. You know for the family as well it's it's it's hit people hard and that's a measure of what a great bloke he was in terms of your connection with him Gary how quickly into your time as Blackpool manager was the 1st contact made between yourself and Jimmy on feel well why everybody else you'd listen to him on the radio over all the years and then when I was a point I think it was within the 1st 2 days you know arrived at the club and introduced himself to me and straight away his passion for the football club is low for the football club still was so strong and it was great to listen to stories straight away and you know in that 1st couple of months you know it came down and it would come in the office of a cup of tea and sit and you know talk football talk about his playing days talk about his managerial days and he was just someone that you could sit and listen to all day and it was a good sounding board for me as well he was always offering advice and these knowledge of the game was you know as sharp as ever do you feel really grateful to have had somebody like that to be involved with you in football but if you needed any advice particularly on a football club that was new to you you just add him around the corner so to speak yeah you know he would like to say he would pop down and it just whatever we were doing would stop and go and have time with him because his knowledge and experience of Blackpool Football Club was you know 2nd to none and it was so passionate and he to for the club to be a success again you know and that's all he kept saying to me was you know just do your past do the best that you can and it was it was great advice for me and he always was quick to saw Ally keep your level when enough for an opinion to make you better and push the Taliban and I can't emphasize enough the blokes love for this football club and it's. Well documented what's being done going on the last couple of years here. Didn't distract Jimmy from one in the past for this football it's quite unique in 2018 isn't it someone to be so synonymous with one football game that really it meant everything to him in terms of football Yeah me neither Like I say spoke so passionate he cared so much for the football club and you know the number of appearances he made one football of it's phenomenal and it's a real sad sad day I know that you wanted him more than anything to be at Wembley did yeah to lead the team out yeah yeah. Because we spoke about it and the he was someone that wanted to be there unfortunately he wasn't well enough but we you know he spoke with the players and. The impact he had in your life even today Jim McAllister was just telling the story about how he met I introduced him to the players just as we were getting on the boss one traveling somewhere and we introduced into the players and introduced him to Jim and Jim being Scottish settle and he said oh you Scottish and I'm making the Scots telling about when he played through England in the b. Scotland and James just recall that story this morning and. That's the measure of the blow it was such a likeable tyrant. Brilliant So from a Blackpool manager of the present to one of the past Simon Grayson has been giving as his reaction today saddened and shocked by really always he was a young boy growing up in the eighty's not Jimmy boy who was on the red you're doing all the Common Core common fortunate to have neck and when I went to Blackpool of the player and manager and you didn't join coming down to the training ground telling me stories about. The number of. Experience it was passing on to me the money just the time well it was something that held in high regard because it helped me along the way in my early days as a manager and obviously Have you always thought so with the family now because it's a sad situation Simon you were in your mid thirty's when you started out in management how much of a help was Jimmy Armfield So you in those various stages. Meant side Tony parts working long you can't you can't not the experience of the people to deal with the person who'd got Leeds United to European Cup final money's very high level xperience of playing for England and everything connected with football so when Jimmy come to the training ground. Listen you can get a word in because Jimmy could tell a story of what it was that was a man you sat down you listen to him and you took on board the wealth of experience he had is a big help to me and I'll be forever grateful for what helped with my managerial career I know you were pressed the north end when we lost Jimmy's great friend Sir Tom Finney and it was such a mark of the mom wasn't it the way he stood up and spoke said sounds funeral is one of the finest speeches I've ever heard he was a great totally that it was to be able to speak in front of people such an event Texan doing but for to do it likely did it was very serious but it was very funny time and it was very good and today we lived in another icon in the world of football somebody who was just love the robot love right to the contrary because of these how we was as a person a fantastic gentleman knowledgeable as I mentioned earlier but also to the tank for everybody and you do Stu the comparisons of when to come. If you happened in. In time and it will be held held in such high regard right there with the country but most notably when you look back on it are pleased to hear that you managed to manage Blackpool to promotion for Jimmie to be there to see it again mentally proud of a situation and again it's like when I went to Preston our 1st call to try and Tom Finney because the icons of football and Jimmy's So for him to be that he sees promoted with his words of wisdom going around over the good times and bad times when I was there as a manager and you have a player that played so long called and could be held in the high esteem those with everybody you get the sense of the Italy does he has a good point you make Simon and I think supporters from every football club rivalries are forgotten on a day like today on the high and it was very much the same when said some passed away and Stanley Matthews before that that you just forget about your rivalries you forget about the club you don't like and it's about recognizing people even made such an impact in football. Oh without a doubt and don't forget all the work Siri did with the p.s.a. And the plays. When go on the ladder of coaching ladder so much because it's with them and again the essay is well I think he did it when he was up there with one of the most respected people. Probably a great. Era and it can be sadly missed because of the impact that it got so many people sign a grace and form a black hole manager and before him the current Blackpool manager Gary bogus speaking to me about the untimely passing of Jimmy on field more to come and just a couple of moments. For travel. And James looking like his Rhodes for the ceiling things ready to come down after the rush hour no big ongoing incidents motorways looking a lot Clary coming out from Rams botany I'm $66.00 was the bypass That's a lot better now I can't see too many delays on the grain road we still have that large pothole he will be filled in at some point this week but not in a post it to be possible in the right a bell folds the more blood than ends of the great road in the pack restaurant might occasionally see some delays there of the house that was not too bad most of the routes a surly come down a lot now is to say no big instance to speak of as always though if you spot something you can let me know just killin it is safe and legal 330123181. When and reflect on life's events Shakespeare would have it made me discourse and I really want. Alan late night phone and ask last night he's tonight from 10 on b.b.c. Radio Lancashire. And we're talking about Jimmy Armfield between now and 20 past 8 this evening on b.b.c. Radio lecture from 7 o'clock another chance to hear a really terrific interview about Jimmy and talking about growing up in dance and and being a Blackpool player in the war and being at the World Cup for England everything about his career is that well covered in the interview by the B.B.C.'s Mark who got his a really really good listen it's better than what we're going to get on the telly for certain between 7 and 820 this evening so make sure you stay with us Glen Boli is with me in a studio the same we're going to hear from Gordon Taylor in around 15 minutes time here on b.b.c. Radio marks of the p.f.a. Of course now Glen It seems like not long ago that you were at the very heart of a of a campaign to raise money to have a statue of Jimmy Armfield Bloomfield Road is probably not 2 minutes ago is it just when was it because time flies that. I think we started the campaign probably 20092010 not sort of season. At the start she was unveiled 40 is the day of his last game for Blackpool which would have been fest in May 2011. Of the 7 years ago staggering time I just tell us about the process that you went through to make sure that that was done and as an association why you decided that that it had to be done well I think we felt it was really in Poland it was recognised and recognized you know he's achieved to recognise that whilst he was still alive I mean you see all the statues go up you know not just in football or in sport but it is the you know walks of life then and it's the families that acquits in the ribbons or do. The invalid and not the people themselves and we just felt that actually if we're going to have a statue to me on field who better to unveil than Jimmy Armfield. I remember approaching him about say and he wasn't sick. I think he sort of thought well you know they say it's happened when you know you've passed and I said well it's a bit late because we already started it so it was a bit like Ok then and then we just dates of the 2 years a fundraiser and I mean the supporters were just absolutely magnificent You know the statue itself cost 75000 pounds and every penny of that money came from Blackpool supporters and events that we've organized. And yeah just to see him on the nights in Vail it was a really very special moment and there's a lot of things that went so during those 2 as I remember driving dad's Hampshire with him needs to go to say Big Jim as he called it said to him outside it's often the stories in the car whether it be about Bryan claw fall or tele Venables and Glenn Hoddle again now just it just amazes stories but it always came back to Bob Dylan his love was blocked more than anything and you know those 200 share he absolutely where shipped up and then very sad you know he's won so it's a dying wish almost from a professional you know if there's a police farm it's who wants to see those tangerine Szechuan acts as a top flight seaman English football another that saving his eye and not thirst how much he gets from them in the Premier League when but Premier League it's a really special time that was in it I mean people have posted the photograph today of Jamie Annie and Holloway and the 3 goalscorers at Wembley I mean when you think back to those days in Blackpool fans who were listening are probably thinking you know that let's not get too sentimental about it things have changed at the football club but just excuse me for doing so for a moment because that was justifiably list and so many people's dreams were realized including you also thinking Would you ever see your team in a top flight up but you never thought a decade ago you would be. You know no never in in 1000000 years and you know we know there's issues we know that but one thing that nobody can do is take away the memories and the memories of those 2 years the promotion season and the Premier League season which is fantastic and it was so great that he got to get to share those memories and and you know his dream to see in Blackpool and the Premier League and I think even they did a 5 Live allowed to do co commentary on the program as well I think people they gave him a little bit of bias Joe in those those commentaries Yeah it was such an intense I mean listen wasn't a stand in Bernie's been in such Thanks ever so much sent as attacks they want trouble Three's a number I just thought you message with the word likes he says Jimmy Armfield the maintenance man at Burnley police station in the ninety's was a form of Blackpool sense a half from the sixty's called Bill Cranston by pure chance a police officer bumped into Jimmy and mentioned his old teammate and the fact that he was retiring Jimmy volunteered to come over and do a surprise retirement presentation for Bill was a gentleman I think pretty much sums him up Peter saying as anyone mentioned that Jimmy was a high sheriff of Lancashire his coat of arms is in Lancaster Castle with others dating back centuries another one who says Jimmy Words cannot describe how much you'll be missed condolences to family and friends like comes from Mike in borrow plenty of footballers of had their say as well today at David mentioning him calling me a true gentleman I remember a story I was at that he would part with David don't you years ago now and Jimmy was up there own front of his working for b.b.c. 5 Live and David went down at half time to get the cups of tea and I'll never forget Jimmy's face what I mean got minds on and until he passed him a competition it was a freezing day and under Vic smile on Jimmy's face it was it was a lovely lovely moment. And it was really clear that David as a footballer of this generation really was. So sort of respectful of Jimmy all feel they really was footballing royalty Let's hear from one of these tonight show way back in the day a Blackpool Glynn James has been giving me his reaction today from many great players he was a real character a great live in the dressing room you know it was one of the lines in every in the waves Cup in of England a lot I never brought him up back in the press now if you know what I mean it was just one of the black ball players that while he was a captain and we all looked up to him he was a one club man just like us me he was the mind in those days you didn't get the chance to move but he really just tell us about his qualities as a person as well as a player Glenn one thing is just a genuine guy help me and it would help anybody out and run Blackpool where he was always his own town he was very popular quite rightly so but only in. It could go on forever dissing but even just a genuine good guy it couldn't really find any fault with him I mean me me me with a captain on the team and we lead by example really more than squeeze and run run the place great even to everybody and we had a good side that level of promotion it was a captain of the team that won a Preston walk up to the last season when you were playing alongside him did you have a think that he would have a consider leaving Blackpool when you don't think that way then because some didn't move there now and they only want one club with a season or 2 seasons and then they're off Ateneo says something to the fun it was with Jimmy we were going on to Bloomfield Road to put a release on for somebody and we're following the team without an Illinois Here's a because they've been moving around with her on their arse and I want them on the shaking arms and I'm thinking that will never happen and we were playing we didn't know them and I got to know them just to see if the drink after 'd the match but not like that it was clear what black political it meant to Jimmy Wales and he was never too far away from giving some advice to one of the various manages the club have had in recent science certainly was yeah on the other Any advice he gave would be you know it to be good well intended and it will be worth listening to can you remember him and his reaction when the statue was billfold and I can remember walking in. Too much to the well if you get to where it is now That way we all went . To Open is just that if you were quite was a Muslim audience guy you know he would when he was down about something else or somebody else but he didn't don't like talking then by Jimmy I feel particularly So just just finally Glenn just just how will everyone who played with him like yourself and various others remember Jimmy best is there a moment that stands out more than anything else I wouldn't say that I would think I mean Bill Bentley drove me this morning to stalk him I was thinking he was you know they said they would let me know when the fuel is I'll be help not only that was one more but he was just he was just a genuinely nice guy telling the bit monotonous uplift true and exactly the same committee said of Glen James who join me this morning to talk about his great friend both of them warm club players for Blackpool in this career as Welsh international calls Clint as well and spoke so so well about Jimmy and the fact that he was there for the envelop of the statue and that sort of thing and one of the club's nice guys Glen Boney was in the House should say e.s.e.a. It is a great season fantastic and again a little on that you know last block Poland used to go and take ground soon I think because well it said to be in favor to see that seaman you know follows there for as the results Yeah so many people have wanted to share their thoughts today and the one thing Glenn said that I'm a most direct you to our social media handle today you'll find plenty of reaction on that lots of former players and managers giving their reaction to the death of Jimmy Armfield but also on that I mentioned it in the interview to Simon Grayson and going James mentioned it a little bit that how good Jimmy Armfield was with words and if you're fortunate enough to be involved in any way at the funeral of sits on Finney I don't think I've ever heard a more final speech in all my life that Jimmy Armfield is a close friend of some Finney I know in terms of of of emotions and all sort of thing I would be hopeless on on a day like that but the speech that he made Glenn was just incredible and he was talking about Stanley Matthews and Tom Finney and made a lovely point saying. I once asked my dad who is a better player and I want I want the thoughts of everybody and people have asked me and the answer is always the same doesn't matter and the answer is No it doesn't matter but it's just a lovely moment that you know so many people go through life's a news better the New Right now those better the messy know isn't nice he's better than an elder those that matter in this generation should we enjoy both of them and not just sums up to me doesn't it yeah it does and now him as it somewhere with secret close at some came to an event that we organized for Jimmy's 70th birthday 12 years ago and I remember it just got back from I think you may have family in Canada and he did have and we were expecting to look pretty date anyway stated then left and myself in Jamie went to the cop part to try and help that something they find his car so heavy I met 11 o'clock outside the carpark at Bloomfield Road trying to find a Honda Accord Rejean Houle field itself and it was just so Vo and eventually we found dead a few went down the m 55 not really brilliant lovely impress the north end today as well who have made sure that they have sent their condolences in a variety of ways Glenn and you can have as much rivalry as you want with your nearest and dearest but it doesn't matter tonight as it is just class from from them it really was and it was a lovely thought the they said so over which I believe the statues and really nice touch from them well Jimmy Armfield of course is a familiar name to so many people of so many generations because of his career in broadcasting was a fabulous writer and also a broadcaster which started off with Granada television many years ago before the b.b.c. Managed to persuade him so to speak to go and work on the old sports on 2 programme you're going to hear a lot about Jimmy Armfield stories about his time in broadcasting after 7 o'clock tonight but earlier today I spoke to the B.B.C.'s football correspondent John Murray who has been to several footballing competitions and try. World all over the world with Jimmy Armfield and he's a variety of amusing anecdotes to tell us well probably covered hundreds of matches sitting alongside Jimmy over the years and the great thing about him was that he always off air had such a common touch you know he he would speak to anyone so incredibly friendly and you know he was a charming guy you was a really charming man and on the air a very reassuring to work with and if you turned up to cover a match with Jimmy you knew you would be able to cover all eventualities because Jimmy had pretty much seen and done it all in the game and was able to cope with anything that was thrown at him so great a great man to work with a great man to sit alongside and a great man to spend time with and we'll miss him sorely he struck me is football royalty whenever you're in the same room as him whenever you're sat on the same row at a football match as in John but he was an extremely humble man and would have hated to have thought that way when he had totally and when you think of the study that he had put together in the game the fact that he was England captain played at the World Cup is Blackpool time you know playing with Stanley Matthews one of the all time greats of the English game the all time greats of football and Jimmy played on the same flank as Stanley Matthews and clearly learned so much from him the fact that he was a one club man which I think everyone always really appreciates particularly so in the modern game and then you know once once he'd had his little far into management don't forget the fact he reached the European Cup final with Legion ited the fact that he was so very highly regarded within the f.a.a. As well as well as his as broadcasting where you know people people of almost of all ages knew knew who Jimmy was through that avenue as much as anything else. Yeah he's certainly has written work on his broadcasting took up an awful lot of his stand in yes it did and you know I've traveled far and wide with Jimmy and you know if a few memories that can back to me that really sort of somebody is common touch the fact that I remember it we were at Euro 2000 and you things Jimmy always had minor ailments and there was always something there was always something niggling at him and I remember him I remember one morning in Brussels getting a knock on my door early in the morning open the door and Jimmy standing there looking looking up at the ceiling with this bottle in his hand and he says Quintet and he said can you can you can you there's no Good morning can you put the I've got these eyedrops can you put these eyedrops in I so I had to so I had to shop at the former England captain into my room and put these are you drops in and we get the I dropped. And. That's But I see it breakfast goes closer to that stage this is 1st thing in the morning we used to go Euro 2004 we went to a café we stayed in Porto away from the city centers little hotel and there was this cafe and it was just like a working class café over the road and they did you know the most bit Jimmy we went in there and that was that was it for Jimmy This was his place you go in there and he'd say to them as soon as he walked in other same as yesterday. And by the time we finished there you know he's he's friends with them but you know he wasn't to be trifled with either and I remember the 1st tournament that I worked with him at the World Cup in 1908 in France we went down that was red hot it was me and Jimmy and Simon Brotherton and we went down that red hot and we were it was. Columbia against chin is here I think. After the match there's a long long queue for a taxi because we were going back to the airport to fly back to the north of France and and there were you know how it can be quite in there in the south of France in mass in places like that and there were these young lads trying to push into this queue to get ahead of us in the in the taxi queue and stepped back and thought Right well you know and Jimmy said all right you need with this thought me says back at the kid. That you've probably never been told where you know a lot of Jimmy's age but he just had all Thora to say about that they sort of meekly bowed their heads and disappeared to the back of the queue when we got our taxi on time I think John when he spoke Jaring commentry he was never one to go over the top in criticism though of someone in terms of person or in terms of their performance but he had ways of letting you know if someone was having a good game or perhaps not so good he was as probably you and I as commentators would want to be he was totally fair you know if there was criticism be you'd get it but he would give it in a fair way and. You know I think it's for that reason that he had such great long. Youthful voices Well you know I don't think its voice really changed very much over the years just that sort of gentle youthful voice even when he had his initial throat cancer problems and I think he was concerned when he initially came back after that you know I was quite surprised that amazingly is his voice had been unchanged but yeah I mean you know totally and utterly fair in the in the assessment and criticism Journal commentary that he would give and some people might not be aware John that such was his respects in the game that when England needed a manager in the 1990 s. Who did they appoint to go and find one for them none other than Jimmy Armfield That's right so Jimmy was instrumental in both the selection of initially Terry Venables but but also Glenn Hoddle after that as well you know he walked. Very much in the in the corridors of power and was very highly regarded bear and you know I would be very much expecting that the p.f.a. And the f.a.a. There will be there will be fulsome tributes from from all of the organizations the Football League as well because because Jimmy was extremely well thought out in those areas as well. You know I know he was very proud of the work that he did in Blackpool and in Lancashire with his charity work and he was the high sheriff I think wasn't he of Lancashire at one stage and he was tremendously proud of that ad for that period of time we would refer to him when we met up with him as the sheriff. And you know. Certainly don't forget the work that he did away in education as well he was heavily involved on that side of things because you know it was something that meant a great deal to him so you know I really well rounded individual which you can't say about every one that you meet in football just in terms of Blackpool John he was hugely proud of them I suppose you love works in the year that Blackpool spent in the Premier League that's an awful lot so and when it did you know each of us he wouldn't boast about it but the fact that you know at that time I remember going there with him when the when the statue was put up to to Jimmy and I was the one of the stands his name there and you know what what what could possibly tell you more about how he was thought of at Blackpool Football Club then the fact that there's a statue of him outside the ground in one of the stands is named after him and a man of great faith as well John that's right of course is all going playing. You know the time after time we would cover matches with Jimmy. Regular churchgoer and Player of the organ which was something that meant a great deal to him and he would regularly play the organ so he covered a match with. On a Sunday afternoon you'd say to Jimmy playing the organ this morning Johnny Yes I was there playing the organ so that was that was a a large part of his personality I'm pleased you've reminded me of. Yeah it's just a one off I think John it's fair to say in terms of working with Jimmy Armfield you'll never quite work with someone the same as him again would you know because you know I've done this myself for however many years 2530 years and the whole time that I've done it certainly on national radio up work with Jimmy because he was there long before I was there and you know I suspect now there will probably not be a summariser that I will work with as long a period as I work with Jimmy So we we really and I know that it was a target for Jimmy even though the cancer came back to him it was still a target I know you still talking to radio football at the time about how he wanted to come back and do at least one more match and. That very sadly is something that did beat him and he actually said to me in this very studio about 18 months ago that he would love to do so much as for us when he wasn't working for network radio and it's such a shame that we never got the opportunity to do that with any sort of regularity Glenn Bowl easier for the chairman of the Blackpool Supporters Association listening to some of those anecdotes from John Murray sounds like traveling with Jimmy might well have been an entertaining time at various football towards Glen just when we reflect on the season in the Premier League What was he like a fan like everybody else I remember speaking to him after we played Manchester United at home and all about profiles this isn't the only one that that game to look at halftime I think took off way to uni and go on Ryan Giggs that was that book that's just prior to that we had an absolute nailed on penalty decision that was turned down I think Livan it was filed in the box it was a blatant penalty and Peter Wallsten the referee never forget a name I didn't point to the spot I remember speaking to him after the match and I had never heard he was so angry because it was a plates at Penn State which Charlie had a bit messed up I don't think he would have done it would have been thrilled because Manchester United but he was he was so crass about that about this issue but I also know that game but which also means that. Obviously for Manchester United it was a that was a special moment for him to say but poor play Manchester United. You know I'm one of his good friends was that witness it yeah just all Manchester United don't last few minutes they've announced that they have completed the signing of Alexis Sanchez which will take earnings in football wonder what Jimmy would have made of it $450.00 grand a week something like that that that it will be earning a surly blaming the player himself a club us to be prepared to play it so if someone offered me a new that money Glenn I'm not sure I'd be heading for the door said. Possibly you can't possibly say no to that but yeah Alexis Sanchez is now a Manchester United player b.b.c. Radio like it is a programme about the South passing of Jimmy on field and from 7 o'clock we're going to hear an extended interview with Jimmy recorded last year I delighted to say joining us live from our studio in Manchester City evening is the chief executive of the p.f.a. Gordon Taylor someone who knew Jimmy I'll feel particularly Well good evening Gordon. We might not be able to hear Golden at this moment in time good evening Gordon can hear as good evening you would think now. In terms of the whole day that you've had today reflecting I'm sure with many many people from the world of football I'm sure you've heard a few nice stories today haven't you. Well there's been an overwhelming response as we expected we've been ready for it for the last few days when we had kept in touch with his family and his sons and he'd gone into the hospice and from enough thought so I said well knowing Jamie that will perk him up certainly because there would be different people and he was. A social mine the time for everybody and sure enough it did and his appetite picked up what was it was an ending with all his family as would wish for such a gentleman he was a real gentleman Jim and today that even calls from. Today's Bihari crag over from ringing from over an island saying Jimmy was one of the 1st to ring him when he had counsel because it was so typical of Jimmy anybody he knew who got such a problem in the teeth been battling with the last 10 years he would be in touch with them I don't know how he found time really with his day because. You know he was with those consultants he'd been a player of course a been a top manager getting leads to the finally a lot of the media he loved is commentating the he never had a word a bad word for anybody if he could say a good word and I can just even seen him at Christmas time we found a picture from the big freeze up in 1963 and Bloomfield Road was like an ice rink and it was a picture of Jimmy Sheeran off quickly would have done in this case when Aston Tony waiters the goalkeeper and he was pleased as Punch and he put it straight up on his wall there way that is why I found. Graeme a cuz he had the support of his family not just for football but also with so many . Activities and charities with hospital trusts with Outward Bound with this church playing the organ I remember his 80th birthday I had a big do it at the tower and at the highlights of his evening was when he got his chance to play Reginald Dixon's organ that went as you know that. Was well known that but poor incredible relay just a legend I think and quite deserve it lays 2 statues while he was living which is lovely both at Blackpool and then. You know where I was in line he was at Denton and those there's a statue there outside because I'm Ashton to 3 woke up Heroes Geoff Hurst Pirata from its l.a. And Jamie Wiley didn't play would be in England captain and you couldn't ask for a better mom in the dressing room are on the touchline to be there supporting you because he just love the game and in his later years he's been of course he'll tell tales from the past forever but he's concerned with the current state of the game and its future development it was in his heart and then his soul and it was a real just a privilege and honor to have known him and to call him a friend Gordon Stay with us for the next couple of minutes we'll just check what's happening on the roads and be right back with the. Radio station travel. And as you saw me James Lee He's look at along his shoes roads nothing really to report now things have calmed down nicely after the rush hour no ongoing incidents even potholes has been possible he would grade road to see because many issues of the fields but there are reports of problems now Belfour needs the myth of restaurant on the outskirts of blood and I should be better for you it's a play because he also presents to look a little bit busy so the final part of the Gaston road through forward. Up to the m 55 rounded out the Jhunjhunwala remains a little bit busy but everywhere else I would say he's fine so in the most ways a clear as always if you spot a problem this number the coal 033-012-3818 extension 1 travel you can trust from the b.b.c. Any way you Lanky. And we're with you through until at 20 past 8 this evening between now and 7 o'clock I'm joined by Gordon Taylor from the p.f.a. Of course England Boley the former chairman of the Blackpool Supporters' Association and now Glen just before we go back to Gordon here Blackpool have a big game on Saturday that league position would suggest it's a big game before we even think about what's what's going to happen in tribute to Jimmy Armfield we also buy the club this afternoon that any ticket sales that go through from today on wards all the proceeds will be given straight to the hospice where Jimmy spent his final days. There is this is not the time or place to get involved in any sort of disagreement with any of the people who support Blackpool Football Club but what what do you hope you see this weekend at Bloomfield Road Well I think you know I and it's a day is certainly not a day for politics but I hope Saturday can be a fitting tribute to him because you know for people that you know didn't know him or never met him or never had the pleasure of being able to speak to him Blackpool was his 1st love you know he absolutely adored the club and that's he and the tangerine shares and you know he will be desperately hoping that you know they we don't Saturday and they win every game so so I hope Saturday is a fitting tribute and people can go and if they so wish pay their respects to Cherry mockable man and somebody that we were never see again in our lifetime you never see any you know one club man well I was somebody who devoted his life where they'd say to the file coast absolutely golden sailors where there's an homage just a studio as well Gordon in terms of if we think of Jimi as a 4. Your careers coincided us starting out with Baldwin us as Jimi was was getting to a stage of his career where he was probably thinking about the next stage but just tell us how good a player he was while he was very good he was. Quite exceptional but the thing about Jimmy if you played against him in those days there was talkin from behind and talkin from over the top as well as you knew if you played against Jimmy one quite the same as playing against Tommy Smith or Norman Hunter and it was fat and any was our Mr knew he was a sportsman and. Book he used to used to have to work really hard because he really. Was the originator really of the attacking full back and he would not even be restrained when Joe Smith is manager had told him that they had Stanley Matthews to do that and he needed to be back defending in the days of the w m formation but Jimmy has a say was such an enthusiast in me was fast and it was quality and from that point of view it was very very special as a footballer and never mind the success enjoyed as a manager because of both want a smile clubby took him up and Leeds United to take over from Brian cliff was no easy task to get them to the European Cup final and I think in a way it was purrfect that he then went into the media and not just right saying but commentating to stay in touch with the game because he really cared about it he didn't live in the past he lived in the present and he thought about the future and he was very happy I think probably. As much as possible because he wrote all the coaching advice and coaching tests for our website with regard to youngsters taking on the game he cared about the game and he was even knew the importance of football and where it could get and be a force for good and that's how he lived his life and I think I'm amazed at how much time he had for all his other activities a regular churchgoer playing the organ in church is charities such as outward bound in the hospital trust see Satam high sheriff of Lancashire he had a very full life and of course it would have been possible to do that without a search or devoted wife as and always put his family 1st it was it was really I'd say in a day where we talk about role models he was the perfect role model just before you joined us Gordon we were reflecting year on Jimmy's ability as a public speaker you speak in public with regularity Gordon and I'm sure you'll appreciate just how to respect Jimmy could put these words across and just choose the right ones and and the perfect example is some phonies funeral isn't it where you were of course and what a magnificent speech that he made for such a close friend. Yes he was an excellent speaker and he has to do his homework and he used to prepare and that was really typical of Jim I do recall that I used to come into my office before it got to do is to do is say I got that job oh god no not so I didn't come on you don't need to resort to God media's jokes you've got enough good stories of your o.o. Cobol. Job doing by the way well it's not years now nowadays. Since it's been. It's not been used but I'll always keep it to remind me of Jimmy because much as we're busy in the p.f.a. When Ms secretary and say oh Jimmy's on his way over coming out to see the catalog and that would be a great time e Book the world back into perspective Glenn we close on call in time on our 1st hour of this tribute to Jimmy on field how will you remember him I think is just a wonderful ambassador for the time to blow up. You know he always said to me that you know when one of our many journeys going to see the statue be but Pat I have to just you know where your money footballer broadcast I'd always say a player play is a love play and. I hope. It's 100 she can do him proud again. But I think you know he's just given his life and soul to the town of Blackpool and you know hopefully the time will pay for specs over the coming days and weeks and gold in terms of the work he's done with the p.f. Eye over the years just how invaluable his input. Well we have a big star now and everybody's devastated I mean he was a Hall of Fame when with us of course we should remember him it's our award stand it would be fat say in that difficult on the spirit of law is be with us and of course his memory will be on in terms of being highly respected go to choose to England managers in the 1990 s. When football wasn't quite the way it is now his opinion was highly sought after was no I'd say he was a perfect mentor and adviser and I remember discussing being live manager of with him when it was quite controversial to a point Terry Venables Jimmy was adamant and sure enough England appointed Terry and we had a very successful and unfortunately game going out on penalties but that was the name of the game and with Terry Venables and the Euros that choice proved as with most decisions g m a to success and there's a lovely story Glenn is regarding an interview with Howard Wilkinson many years ago when when Howard I think took exception to some questions from a roomful of journalists at how many caps of you lot got so which g.b. Said 43. It's worth remembering that Gordon is saved in both fields that is very special they the ability of him to you know so wherever he was and to have a sense of you may feel was about there was definitely you know left in the atmosphere for the good and not many people can say that Gordon would you encourage every Blackpool supporter to be present at the weekend. I'm sure every Blackpool supporter living in Milan would want to be that it would certainly be worth it go and you'll be looking forward to. Well yeah it's a chance that pay respects and and say thank you it's a wonderful servant certainly is Gordon really appreciate you joining is if this is just one of biding memory what would it be wow that is a really difficult choice but I think I want to buy a memory would be that he would want to say the game maintain its popularity as the Basque aim in the world the most watching from that point of view he's really concerned that the next generation gets its opportunity in professional football Gordon Siler of the p.f.a. Thank you ever so much for being with us tonight and a pleasure to see you again Glenn it's been some time you've. The hell over the last few years and and a good time watching Blackpool of course and a family man now which is exactly why we're not seeing the as much these days are coming out the other side of the news at 7 o'clock am back with you we will be hearing in depth from Jimmy Armfield in conversation with Mark Progress speaking about his entire career from start to finish so make sure you stay exactly where you are us coming right up after the 7 o'clock news on b.b.c. Radio Lanka. One way to unseat the. E.c. . T.'s. D.c. . 7 o'clock News I'm David Bailey Blackpool child has been lit up in tangerine colors and flanks of flying at half mast as the result mourns Jimmy on field the former Blackpool an England football campaign has died at the age of 82 after his football career ended he moved into sports broadcasting and became very active in public life in Blackpool the leader of Blackpool Council Simon Blackburn says he'll be sorely missed an incredible sense of humor remembering telling me once that he found out that during the summer his wages were more than half of what Sally Matthews got is for which I want to ask just for about the answer was all stems a much better player than you Jimmy So Sam was 1st 2nd and said Yes I'm not sure in the summer Greg I had a really big impact so let's have a call target a man accused of driving a van into a crowd of worshippers outside a mosque in north London intended to kill as many of the group as possible during all spawn denying his murdering Makram alley and trying to kill 9 others in June last year prosecutors say it was a terrorist attack aimed at intimidating the Muslim community the Ukip leader Henry Bolton has insisted he won't.
