Radio Kent we're going to be focusing on around $100.00 families here in the county who want one Christmas present above all others it's a present though that no matter how wealthy they are they cannot buy and for them to receive it means for another family a Christmas of upset and sorry for the gifts we're talking about it's organ donation James Broughton is team manager for Southeast organ donation services James really good to have you on the program tonight thanks for being with us pleasure Dominic thanks for having me on the line and you know over the years that I've talked about organ donation I realise that there is sadness there is sorrow but there's also a sense of hope often coming from the families whose loved ones have given part of themselves to those individuals because life in some form or another goes on indeed you're completely correct vast number of families gave a great deal of solace from knowing that they've been excess or that their loved one has been up to give the gift of life. And part of them is living on in someone else so never an easy time to be going through the wait for organ donation either but is it this time of year because it's that lead up to Christmas or the holiday season that there that people are thinking about families they're thinking about being together they're thinking about futures. Yes indeed indeed and hopefully And part of this I'm talking to you 'd is wearing courage and be able to think about others part of Christmas you know thinking about your fellow man and giving the greatest gift you can probably give to anyone so we're talking about 100 families here in Kent what range of conditions will those people and their loved ones be going through right now. The sort of main the main of people that are on the waiting list a large number have kidney disease and kidney failure of some sort and more often not require dialysis you have people with degrees of liver failure lung disease heart failure you said about 100 people within Kent that are waiting for a transplant I mean current across the u.k. There are just over 6000 people waiting for transplant 185 of those are children 'd and of those 18538 of them are waiting for a heart transplant themselves is interesting the weekend I was looking at my mobile phone it prompted me to write him a medical details in case my phone you know I got something happened to me and the phone was the only way finding out who I was perhaps and it occurred to me as I was writing down information I am a an organ donor for the future I mean my current has always been in my wallet but I realize how much I don't take my wallet with me as much anymore and then on the device it said Are you an organ donor and I put in the details of the reality the the. And you as an organization who also have to think about how people on now letting all the people not just their own family members about whether to be an organ donor denature or not I but also the fact that we just thank our around the kind of stuff we used to in the cob may not be in the form of a piece of cardboard in a want to rip us no of course you're completely correct but we encourage now is obviously we're moving forward we want people to as we've discussed talk with their families about their wishes so the next of kin who always involved will know if they end up in that situation being awesome about being a potential window into but there are a vast amount of ways that you can now register the new n.h.s. That it's now live in the u.k. Where you have access to medical details you can register on there you can register your wishes when you complete your driving license when you renew your or your passport when you renew your car tax and a number of other government websites quite often prompt you. To make the decision if you haven't already and of course as well if you sign up for the boots advantage card scheme they let us they let you register them as well as there's a vast amount of ways of registering we would always check any patient to see if they're on the register but obviously we still speak with families so that's why we have Methley encouraging people to please let your family know your wishes. James Broughton is with me to manage if a southeast organ donation services online in Kent all this we will be looking at those 100 families here in the county who want one Christmas present above all others and the wait may be even more poignant I guess this Christmas because next year likely to be a much greater supply guess of donations because of a change in the mall this coming March Yes So the so the law is changing in spring 2020 where it's becoming what's known as an opt out system. Scuse me in the past year as I was just saying you've always like once had to let us know if you want to donate but from Spring 2020 the law is changing and it will consider that everyone over the age of 18 will be considered an organ donor unless you've already registered that you don't want to donate on the organ donation register or if you're one of the excluded groups from that. I suppose it's very important to say that the family is still the pivotal point of that. Conversation is what would happen if the families opposed it. We would try and understand why they opposed it . And we would have a discussion. And in in-depth conversations to try and understand their concerns and if their concerns are unfounded as to hopefully rectify them and provide them with adequate information correct information and that's a vast amount of what we do is giving these family members the correct information at the correct time and in the correct way those who are on the register those who are waiting particular the this Christmas right now must be also hold on their families waiting for that phone call and we're going to hear in the next couple of days here on the show about how the phone can go day all night and even if it does ring that they can then be delays will set back so forth salaams of course you know it's incredibly I think it must be incredibly stressful for the people on the transplant waiting list. And it's always the every day they can't go anywhere without that pager they have to be ready to go at the drop of a hat and we do everything all we can to make sure we can help them get well and support obviously the donors and the donors families through this process as well but as you know at the moment we are currently there is a shortage of organs for donation because. People don't know what their family members want to do after death and then don't want to make that decision for them which is why it is so incredibly important that you speak to your family and let them know what you want so if they 'd end up in that position. They won't be faced with a decision that they don't know the answer to am I right as well James there is a shortage of those from ethnic minority groups donating there is you're completely correct on that. There is a shortage and I think I would have to double check my facts but people potentially from an ethnic minority background can wait considerably longer sometimes twice as long if not more to receive a lifesaving transplant What's the reason. It's. Multi-factorial us. That there is. Less people from that background who are who are even who are able to donate simply because the numbers within the u.k. And. The various matchings I have to occur have to be correct and obviously if the families don't want to donate and despite all the information we give and they decide against a nation the nation will proceed so that means that potentially if you're waiting you will have to wait longer we're going to some amazing stories over the next couple of days but what's your message to people listening can right now my message to people in Kent is. It's a difficult subject but please do talk to your families about it you're coming together for Christmas let your family know what your wishes are.
