Women to take on more challenging and diverse jobs in the States in an effort to reduce the difference in pay between male and female workers New figures show that on average the men working for the states are nearly 20 percent more than the women although it doesn't compare the way they are paid for doing the same jobs Assistant Chief Minister Constable Richard Buchanan said he wants to use the figures to change the way women look at their career options does not encourage ing well into comments that were forced to do jobs that they perhaps have thought about for example. Going to fire service in the service and some of the manual traits which we are very keen to encourage as they want serious given the option to do that giving them the opportunity within their careers to move up through through through the ranks and take the very senior positions in our organization campaigners want Jesse States to take more action to protect the island's off shore reefs in particular the acros the reef is off the north coast of Jersey and is a popular place for visiting boats and day trippers the group of Jersey marine conservation is concerned that the number of visitors is rising and damaging the ecosystem there and that sets continue as 250 more births are added to the nearby cartridge Marina Karen McKelway from the conservation group said visitors need to be made aware that they have to take better care of the acros and the regular patrols through the summer would help to bring the message home some people see think that seals dolphins and birds at the moment are actually protected but the lore isn't actually framed in that way and you've got to do something very serious and it's got to be fairly easy to prove that what you've done and serious for any action to be taken we need to change that. D.c. Radio. Good morning on the way on the show one of the stars of a long running radio show The Arches will be on tell you what it's like behind the scenes you hear the champagne corks going I mean that's usually a bicycle pump and that makes the wonderful sound the farmgate in the arches. Being put together so when you take down an animal in the mix most perfect sound. Bellamy's been speaking to the B.B.C.'s Jenny Kandel Tobias you'll hear that conversation lined up Coldplay as well after Van Halen. Live live. Live I. Van Halen on the radio jazzy. As it has been on the radio since the summer of 1950 almost 7 days it's the writing . And the fictional English village of bridge. With connections used to living. Uncertain he was actually a an alternate the we talking about. As an actor she's been speaking to. Us as well about famous voices who have paid on the option. I mean we've had so many you know well known people on the program I mean in my time you know Duchess of Cornwall and we've had Kirstie Allsopp we've had and it could rise to we've had Alison Steadman and I mean so many Princes Margaret they love it I mean so many celebrities just love being on anting Antony Gormley that was very exciting and Antony Gormley came in as a fan of him did Princess Margaret speak yes she did it was actually that was like before my time and it was the scene was with my lovely friend Sora coward who sadly is no longer with that she played Caroline standing but yes she she they went to the palace and she spoke she spoke I don't I'm not sure how well but she did but she did it she did it you know I was it was quite funny giving notes to her mom could you probably speak a little louder yes. Well I remember growing up watching Blue Peter in from time to time you'd have the b.b.c. Sound effects department coming on maybe a table with a couple of coconuts and some gravel. In the side for its own Absolutely we have somebody called Spot who is literally on the spot I think that's where originally came from and they are they do sound effects because in radio we don't learn the lines we have the script which is marvelous but of course if you're doing a t. Scene or something like that you know you don't have the hands free to to pour your tea so you have your spot person doing it with you but there are all sorts of of wonderful sound effects unbelievable sound effects that make the correct sound can you share a few of the stories with some thinking of some of the weirdest sound effects things yes I mean for instance if we are having some champagne and you hear the champagne cork going I mean that's usually a bicycle pump and it goes and that makes the wonderful sound if I've done lots of period drama as well on radio and so you know somebody has to have their head chopped off and that's usually a knife a ship very sharp knife going through a cabbage and that makes a wonderful sound. And as if the heads being chopped off I mean it's all sorts of great things actually how do you do the bicycle pump Well the bicycle pump you know it it's got it what it has the bicycle pump has got. You know how you shape up a bicycle pump to actually inflate the tire it will have a cork in the top of it so the pump is inflated up and and it shoots out so so that's how we do that and for instance the gates that you will hear the farm gates in the arches That's an old ironing board being put pushed together so when you take down and what it makes the most perfect sand and walking through woodland will be old tape that we will use on the floor and that makes one feel sound as if we're walking on leaves and and things like Yeah it's fascinating actually what the the props department over the years and sound effects department of developed you don't want to think they would have used just just normal digital sounds of every day normal sounds stupid you know I mean they do that as well they do that where we have somebody on Graeme's who literally you know where the whole thing's been recorded call grams because it used to be things on gramophone records at one time and they still go grammar schools Everything's digital now but yeah so some things are over imposed from grams but then we have things happening on the floor like doors opening and door shutting and the pouring of the tea it's the timing of things like that you know with we need somebody there the cutting and whoring of the tea to they hold the tea up high and pour from a great height Well it's quite interesting that actually because there's a real technique to do all this and occasionally we act as if the spa person has too many things to do has got to be you know sort of in place in the studio they can't do everything and it seems that we often will be asked to do the odd thing but usually get it wrong because there is a real technique to this and often if we're pouring tea or pouring wine the spot person behind us not in front of us where the mark phonies because the sound will be too loud if if if they're in front which is the logical place to be but they will get a. Hind is doing and that is the correct sound I'm going to be very rude oh no be rude does it pay well. Good living for being a character in The Archers I know that's hugely impertinent or you're not interested but it's quite an interesting question actually because yes years ago I think it was possible when there were only about 21 actors in the cast because you know you were guaranteed a lot of episodes every month now there are about 80 of us in the cost less and we all need to do all the things that that's that's for sure I don't he could these days probably make her an living at it just because it's such a turnover stories no turnover of characters you know so you can't be guaranteed so many episodes a month you know that's fine it means that we can go off and do other things and everybody does go off into other things voice work t.v. You know other radio possibly Yeah I've got the best of all worlds actually I'm very fortunate Sony Ormonde he plays Lillian Bellamy the just character with a Channel Islands connection he lived for a bit more from Sony shortly on the show. In this. weeknights from 7 episodes are about 12 minutes long these days The gives you a slice of rural life in the fictional English village of Ambridge sunny Ormond plays Lillian Ballymena character with a tram lines connection she lived in seen for a while Sony was appalled at the weekend talking about Lillian and how work as an actor and she told the B.B.C.'s Jenny Kendall Tobias how she approached Archer's editor for NASA what Byrne when she heard that the role of Lily and it was coming up I still have the email response and she said to me I'm not costed I am not in general auditions but she said I think you're going to sound too young because we're wanting this sort of voice and so on and so forth because that's all we've got in radio to create a 3 dimensional character but she said Come along audition so the night before I go for the old. Ssion I'm light in the bath and I'm thinking Don't dwell on that by the way listeners and I have not met me but don't dwell on that and I'm thinking what can I do I've done enough radio then to know that I need to find something to reinforce this genie quality vocally and I thought well maybe unlawful to read on and so I'm lying down I. Sounds a bit like sheep but never mind I am going to get the part of a bit of film with it and of course I went for the audition and behold they rang that night and said I got the part but I think one of the reasons was because I was very relaxed I didn't think for a minute that I was going to get the part I'm sure all those other actresses who came along that they were equally as fine could have done the job as well but were very tense about it all wanting to get it and I think I just probably gave them what they wanted because they had a vague idea of what they wanted with William but it's the actor who then begins to flesh it out as you know a good you trying to then actually you know what all that's about so yeah I think I just gave them something that maybe somebody else did and so that's how I got the part that's how I got the park so 1000000 desperate for sister and she. Tanya look perfect that gets. Sent down the line and I write. I have somebody come up to me the other day and say Who are you the lady from the radio and I said yeah this is my son's school and then they said oh you don't look like you sound and I thought was that supposed to mean do you ever get that well yeah yeah people do say that but generally people say to me Oh you are sort of similar to how I expected her to be some people had a completely different. You know view of the image world of what she is but generally I think I'm close close to the fit which is quite interesting that she never returned to nobody's listening because we have rules about this at the B.B.C.'s you know have you ever toyed with your voice and pretended to be Lillian on the telephone when I have done. Have actually done you know the phone messages for friends you know friends of friends who absolutely adore the archers and love living alone and that you know turn up. Missing. But in fact I remember some years ago I did a show Chipping Norton which is the name where I live in Gloucestershire which other and the marketing girl there was very very bright and she said to me sonny could you do put in an answerphone message on our booking service taking 7 so which I did and we were absolutely sold out it was extraordinary because even though I was in the brochure and they could see the picture I think it was to do with the voice you know how low down it's come and see me tonight you know and all that and really well his name is the voice the voice the voice as far as your acting career is concerned you are so much more than just a radio actress so just you're in the most iconic radio series and. Tell us about the most exciting role you've had on stage as far as your concerned asked the most exciting role I've had is Shirley Valentine which I play quite a long time ago now but a friendly one has not seen the stage version of the play it's just one actress on stage for 2 and a half hours it's a $32.00 page. Monologue it's absolutely terrifying but at the same time it's wonderful because the writing is by Willy Russell is just brilliant so for me that was one of the major. Performances of my life I did it in 3 places actually because it took me an age to to learn it as you can imagine so I did it in 3 refugee status but wonderful want to actually what was so wonderful about it was that many people came up afterwards or e-mail me or wrote the letters to say that. They had been inspired by seeing the show because it'd help them to change their lives to be brave enough to jump off their own personal rock and change their lives in some way that wanted to change their lives and hadn't been brave enough and that to me was worth all the performances all the nerves that I ever had. And she plays Lillian Bellamy in the arches and she was. At the weekend talking about work as an actor spot a little bit of time to have a chat with the B.B.C.'s Jay Katie and I wanted to share it with you basically because I'm actually a big fan actually she's one of my favorite characters 1000000 you know Miss Civitas one along with Rex Fabro the to my favorite this morning it is b.b.c. Sounds at all I've been listening today I've really been enjoying days a behind the scenes look where they've been who they've met you actually have from the pilots themselves for the most recent episode the B.B.C.'s William Wright has been speaking to the flight left tenant Alicia Mason Circus one Squadron Leader Mark Bowden who is red 3 and Corporal Phil magic wands who is the dog team leader he's in charge of the colored smoke that comes out the back of the planes they've been at the. Naval Station in San Diego where the movie Top Gun was based Let's be brutally honest for the fact of what we've turned up you know we rocked up you could see the feel from miles away you know what Miramar stands for you know growing up me as a kid watching the film know what it's all about Clearly everything the Top Gun was it was an inspiration for anyone of my age watching that film and then going to an air show you know too dissimilar a to watch enough film and seeing the red arrows which absolutely triggered me wanting to go and do so that being a red arrow to land at Miramar knowing all of that come together it was really surreal and you know I'm that pinch myself going to you know is actually happening and I'm here on the ground and about to display to one of the biggest crowds America does ever do the stands for so it still is quite surreal it was absolutely amazing and I loved everything about it how amazing it all comes around and listen I understand you even got to meet Tom Cruise we did honestly when it was very serious so crazy we had the privilege of being sent around the office club and they said to him I have no surprise to you Oh Ok You know that's nice home is there is a waiting to start this tour and then in walks a maverick basically and I knew it wasn't really him but still he was say one can be it was just incredible you have the mannerisms down just absolutely fantastic I was like a kid in a sweet shop really making. Mike Be honest did you use any of the lines from the film or any point over the past couple of days essentially did. I said they. Are going to be brutally honest I did use one that. We do a thing called Running calls or just before we start the show which normally Reds Tuesday to basically everyone up get them go in and feel the vibe before we get into the show. It felt to me because the 2 didn't find the show here this weekend so it fell to me to. Responsibility So it was only right given where we were that I drop a couple lines to try and cheat people up a slight reduction of I feel the need to leave and I'll leave the rest your imagination. Let me just ask about read to you mentioned read to you are down to a display aircraft to just explain what happened yet so we want to learn to. Read to cook the corporate wife who was the back end of the 9 months of labor that she had to go into hospital and everything was happening pretty quickly so when taking that call I think it was under 2 hours and he was on an airplane back to the u.k. Pretty much made it with you know 30 minutes to spare so the baby arrived so that will happen fairly quickly but you know as ever there are more important things in life and absolutely right they've got back and been able to work to have that moment and actually explaining that to the crowds here at the display it kind of puts that human element into it and you know what it goes down really really well is a little bit lopsided obviously in a aircraft in the sky but you know we've got procedures and radio calls and smoke changes and everything to cater for that so as we said you know we take on the running call someone else being in his position having to make those calls so we have to be prepared for any single one of us from $2.00 to $9.00 not be in there and that in the show is we need to so it works like is that the take on really well and we still want to put on a world class show which was amazingly received here this weekend yeah you have to do that you have to adapt rather than suddenly bringing in a spare pilot it doesn't work like that you can't do that with what you're doing now absolutely not I mean the amount of training that goes into each of these positions you know it's 6 months of solid winter training to train individually feel slop so to be able to just pull someone out and go in straight into that position as you know that that will never happen and can't happen and hence there's only 9 display pilots for 9 positions and there is no spare that you can just throw in there so we can adapt it slightly like we said flying as an 8 if we were to lose yet another pilot or we have a law. Right one for whatever reason through sickness or whatever then the show wouldn't happen so we can only really cater for one aircraft not be in the well listen I don't want to wish the tour away but we are heading towards the end of it but when you look at what you're still going to be doing you're going to be flying over the Golden Gate Bridge flying over the Grand Canyon flying over the Hollywood sign and I'm flying in Los Angeles as well I mean there are still some some amazing moments to come up that it's really just we sat there last night you know just going to a couple drinks and kind of reflect on some of the stuff that's happened already and you just can't really get you have around as I mentioned I went to a travel agent tried to book what we've just done over the last you know 910 weeks you know going to be able to book a b.a. Flight is going to fly right down a 1000 feet from the Hollywood sign over the Golden Gate Bridge off to go Mojave Desert see the space and time like you said all that stuff is just not going to happen so we are acutely aware of how privileged we are the stuff we've got to do but at the same time know when the pope threw out there you know represent in the u.k. In the very best light that we can it's not seen as a jewel we're trying to actually go and do some really key groundwork and engagement has gone down incredibly well so all that stuff that's that's happened as well on the ground not just the flying as has been fantastic and some of the feedback from some of that has been great so I think overall in summary just a huge huge success so far will go make sure we absolutely make the most of these last couple of weeks because it's going to be over in a heartbeat the B.B.C.'s William Wright speaking to right left handed Alysia Mason seconds one squadron leader might bad in red 3 and Corporal Phil magic ones die team leader of the right arrows and you can hear more from behind the scenes of their North American tour of the u.s.
