Radio 5 Live Hello and welcome to the North American sports show on b.b.c. Radio 5 Live I'm. James Wick and coming up on this week's program. Major League Baseball's making some major changes to its drug policy and marijuana is being taken off the list of banned substances we're asking why and what it could mean for other sports and we're also going to talk about why one university is calling time on its college football team it's getting a lot more pricey and we're heading to Chicago where there are more allegations of player abuse in icehockey there's so many big stories going on in my We're going to cover all of those but I've got to ask you a question 1st makes are you going to be watching any North American sport over the Christmas holidays try and stop well because there is so you are delighted to know even on Christmas Day If you are a basketball fan the Raptors will be playing the Celtics the $76.00 ers will be playing the books on the Warriors will be playing the rockets so if you don't fan think actually you might miss out the Queen's speech. Moment maybe maybe you can do the Queen's speech and then watch the basketball not work right I don't to get this wrong because we would be the 1st people to get the time of the Queen's speech we cancelled our Are No no where Ok we're past that period now we all talk about politics we're fine listen I'm 20 something else which is I think relatively interesting I think you'd appreciate this now you've got to keep quiet about all this because we're recording this program. We are and by the by the time it goes out. I will probably have had a couple of drinks because it will work Christmas good Ok so for a late teams I work on the late scene which covers the Sarah Brett program and the Stephen Nolan program in question time extra time and quite notorious. Anyway we've been asked to do a quiz Ok so I'm going to give you a sneak preview of the quiz right Ok here we go wait this is allowed this is allowed Ok Ok it's going out the Chris is happening Thursday lunchtime had gone by the time everyone hears this I think multiple choice is there a price. Right it's buying me drink that's the problem number one which of these n.f.l. Coaches actually exists is it a the book in a year's assistant defensive line coach Laurie locust Is it be the Titans head coach Felix Hound Dog is it see the Chiefs kicking assistant Derek giraffe or is it d. The Patriots key b. Analysts Joan goldfish come I have them all again just the surname is playing locust Hound Dog giraffe and goldfish aren't your of any giraffe unless you see. Derek giraffe this go for you think it's the chief's kicking assistant Jerry Jerry draft the one and only. It's not it's the book and there's a sense an assistant defensive line coach Laurie locust I made the rest of them up I'm not saying what I'm going to tell you because the rest of very very root potentially I might do one more in the next half hour Ok it's risky time. Losing him but. He's the man and. It's been 5 months since the Los Angeles Angels pitch a tireless gags was found dead in his hotel room yeah age of just $27.00 he had drugs and alcohol in his system at the time now Major League Baseball is making some major changes to its drugs policy players will be tested for opioids Fenton l. Cocaine and marijuana not if they're found to have taken them they'll be given support rather than immediate punishments I'm sure he would try to he's been writing about this for Forbes Major League Baseball has interacted some changes to its drug policy the most prominent being that they are going to start testing for opioids such as know an oxy code on and rather than punishing players who test positive early they are recommending treatment programs for those players with ongoing monitoring now another big change that policy is the fact that they are including marijuana and cocaine in these lists and they're treating it the same as they would an opal opioid with treatment rather than punishment now this is a change from Major League Baseball in that it had not tested its major league players for marijuana in the past it only tested its minor leaguers and the minor leaguers were subject to suspension and fines if they test positive for marijuana under the new policy minor leaguers are also protected in that they will be recommended for treatment and ongoing monitoring if they do test positive so no longer Major League Baseball is no longer punishing offenders for testing positive for drugs of abuse. Yes And now that on this side is a very big deal because it's something that leagues like the n.f.l. In the n.b.a. Have yet to adopt they still treat drugs of abuse. As something to be punishable by by fines and suspensions as opposed to treatment and what is the motivation behind these changes Well I think I think what spurred Major League Baseball to really start going down this path that was last season's death of Tyler Skaggs the Los Angeles Angels pitcher who has his official cause of death was was that he choked on his own vomit but he had the toxic levels of alcohol and opioids in his system when he died and so that obviously started an outcry over over Major League Baseball and is there an opiate opioid crisis in the in the league but rather than conducting a player survey they said you know what we're just going to start testing for it and that was just that's that's the big news of the new policy. But even bigger news I think societal leak is that they are not going to as I said punish players there they're going to seek treatment 30 treating this as a problem that needs treatment not necessarily punishment and so isn't that with with states all across the country starting to legalize marijuana one way or another whether for recreational use or for strictly medicinal purposes Major League Baseball went ahead and added marijuana to that list as well and to treat it the same way that they would open opioids and that's that's huge news for for the North American professional leeks a Suppose we have to put this into the context of them why debt crisis in the u.s. Which we've heard about before here on a full night and it seems as though professional sport is not exempt from that. No I mean it's an it's an epic Demick epidemic levels in this country and baseball is not immune to it and I think when you consider the rigors of a professional athlete whether it be football basketball hockey baseball you know if they have access to things like painkillers you know very potent ones oxy Cotton is a big one and so when they're able to get their hands onto a highly addictive substance like that. It's a slippery slope and players have to be careful and. You know Tyler Skaggs tragedy was was just sort of the eye opener for Major League Baseball but if they did do a player survey or if they did really investigate this I'm sure you'd find that he is he's far from the only player not just in baseball but across the freshness sports in this country to be affected by this the same way players were have been affected by cocaine and marijuana in the past is there evidence to suggest that this recreational drug use cocaine marijuana is widespread among baseball players among other athletes it's not documented in terms of yes these this percentage of players have said they use cocaine I think is a little harder to tackle because there's not as much admission for things like that but there have been several players whether retired or suspended that have said look I've sought exemptions for 4 th seal you know the the chemical in marijuana fort as a sleeping aid or as a pain reliever or as an anxiety relief medication something like that and so as as states across the country have have changed their attitudes on recreational and medicinal use of marijuana. Major League Baseball took that into consideration when making this policy change and said you know what this is becoming the norm across the country. It's time that we change with it there was a recent study in springtime done by e.s.p.n. That took the 4 major North American professional sports leagues the n.h.l. N.b.a. N.f.l. And Major League Baseball and said where these teams reside in those cities in those states what are the laws regarding Meron marijuana use and it was an incredible amount 85 percent of cities or states where those 2 professional teams play legalized marijuana either for recreational use or for medicinal purposes that's overwhelming and so you're seeing this policy sort of reflect that now you've touched on it there and Senay playing baseball in fact playing old may just sports in North America it's pretty painful right it takes a toll on the body does that make these athletes these players particularly vulnerable to drugs abuse potentially I think it does I really do think it does because it's an easy fix right whether you're trying to get on the court to you or whether you're trying to stay on the court or on the field or if you're trying to come back from an injury these are aides that that teams are providing to these players maybe maybe at this point not marijuana but painkillers opioids oxy cotton and oxy Co don't they're giving these players. You know significant dosages to get them healthy and to relieve pain and it's those those substances are highly addictive as as you probably know and it does not take much for for a player to become reliant on those and we and this is something we've seen for decades I mean one of the more famous cases in the n.f.l. Was Brett Farve was a hollow Fame quarterback for the Green Bay Packers having having a painkiller addiction and so this this isn't a new thing it's just finally being addressed differently and this would seem like a progressive policy right you could certainly make the argument this is a step in the right direction but I'm stand there has been some controversy about some comments made by an e.s.p.n. Journalist on this issue. Yeah you know what Bomani Jones who who has a show in a column with e.s.p.n. . He made a comment on his show want to Friday that that brought race into how professional sports leagues kind of view these things and he said you know what look if the face of of opioid addiction and opioid abuse in Major League Baseball happened to be somebody of Latin descent a Dominican player or Venezuelan player a Mexican player. Would this would this be treated differently and then we we won't know that because that didn't happen Tyler Skaggs the Angels pitcher who passed he was white and so money Jones His point was. We we treat players or we treat abusers differently based on the on their race and that's how we associate. How we how we punish abusers of those certain drugs so for instance basketball players with marijuana which is a predominately African-American league it's being punished and the decision makers for that were were white executives and you know going back more than 30 years when Len Bias died of a cocaine overdose or when the crack in the depth epidemic was happening in the eighty's those things were treated by it and by way of punishment and not necessarily treatment because. As Jones was was was pontificating because of the color of their skin and that has been a controversial issue and he also did go on to say look white black brown whatever the fact that Major League Baseball is treating these drugs as as problems and looking to help treat players as opposed to punishing them is a big step in the right direction because it's starting to humanize these addictions and not necessarily just say you know what you did bad we're going to suspend you instead it's you did bad how can we help you and that's a huge difference and does this new approach pressure on the other leagues the n.f.l. N.b.a. N.h.l. To follow Major League Baseball's lead. I think it has to the ne Shell has taken up with with marijuana and said look we're going to get players treatment if they test positive for the substance baseball 2nd that a step further now with opioids and adding marijuana and cocaine on that list. As a predominantly American sport you know hockey is is much more popular and candidate than it is in the United States but baseball is quote unquote America's pastime and so I think when they take steps in this direction it's going to inevitably put pressure on the n.b.a. And the n.f.l. To take a look at how they treat these drugs of abuse because the Major League Baseball. You know you can you can say look this is this is a little too late but better late than never. It's going to force the least to take a look and say Ok we may be behind the times here to be retried a from Forbes on major league baseball's new drug policy and what it could mean for other sports. I mean. Yes the football and now the lineups have been announced for the Pro Bowl the N.F.L.'s celebration of the league's best players even though they may not necessarily play for the best friend Charlie says Well Mike Swartz is associate football and it's a USA Today sports and I asked him to give us the headlines I think you're seeing a lot of the typical names that you would see that have dominated this n.f.l. Season in the a.f.c. You've seen Lamar Jackson the Baltimore Ravens quarterback who's the front runner for the League's Most Valuable Player award he was joined by Patrick my homes of the Kansas City Chiefs and Shaun Watson you've also seen Drew Brees in the n.f.c. He was selected to his 13th Pro Bowl so he's been a mainstay it's all it's a lot of the stars that you normally would know there are a few surprises in there though an undrafted rookie from the New Orleans Saints Dante Harris was one of the selections as a return or so there are some names that might not be quite household figures but generally you're seeing a lot of stars in the Pro Bowl as it's voted on by players coaches and fans yeah before we go into the voting process and how these people are selected one of the big highlights on kind of wanted to. Focus on was the fact that for the 1st time since I think the start of time itself Tom Brady hasn't been selected to the Pro Bowl which kind of fits given the season the Patriots are having on offense yeah absolutely not not quite as far back as Times itself but it is. Unlike most isn't the whole bit yes. It was actually the 2008 season I that was when he was injured and played in all but one game and he right now is actually tied for the most pro bowls of any player with 14 I think that there were some people who thought that he might get in just because it's become this perennial thing to see him in this game and based on reputation. He is a you know a mainstay in the Pro Bowl but certainly based on play alone he would not challenge any of those 3 a.f.c. Quarterbacks the Patriots often says really struggled to season and Brady himself ranks among the league's worst in several passing categories there are some who might say that he's keeping a pretty bad unit afloat with his play but he also bears some of the blame for the Patriots' oftens of struggles and especially the last 5 weeks or so I know lots of people on a regular basis talk about Tom Brady having finished and finally being over the hill and he's me about in kind of proving otherwise but well it certainly looks as though he's not have quite as good a season as previously before we go into the of the play is for people who don't know will actually ease the Pro Bowl how do people get selected to weights and can anybody enter it get the Pro Bowl is the n.f.l. Is All-Star Game and it occupies a sort of interesting space because unlike the m l b or n.b.a. Which hold their all star games mid season and something similar to what you might see in those games obviously the players are not putting forth their full effort the n.f.l. Is in a tough spot because they really have had trouble sort of recreating the experience of an n.f.l. Game the what you see in the Pro Bowl it's not anything like. What you would see on Sunday and that's for a few reasons one is just the inherent injury risk of football games none of the players who are participating in this game would want to subject themselves or their colleagues to significant injuries so there are some rule changes for instance there are no kickoffs which are the plays that tend to result in injuries and injuries with the most frequency you're not sending additional rushers after the quarterback and generally you on any given play you're seeing players. Willingly go out of bounds or drag each other to the ground pretty gently so the n.f.l. Has had trouble with the Pro Bowl its ratings have been generally in decline in the last 7 years and they've toyed with the format for it they tried instituting a draft in which. 2 teams selected sides rather than going by a.f.c. And n.f.c. They've moved it for a long time it was held in Hawaii and they've since moved it to Orlando Florida trying to make it more of a tourist destination experience they've added a skills competition to sort of highlight all of the. You know sort of fun elements that are not quite a full game but showing off players arm strength and other skills that they have and they've also moved it from. After the Super Bowl to the week in between the conference championship games and the Super Bowl but that also poses a little bit of a difficulty as. The players who are going to the Super Bowl obviously will not be participating you know this is this is what I was going to ask you because there's loads of both to move Ravens in one of these teams and so does that mean that you know that same with you know if the Ravens make the Super Bowl and it's and looks like they've got very good. As of doing so that actually the team would just be short amount 10 players. Yes they would need to replace those players so the rosters you saw came out this week those those will not be the exact players who will actually take the field you're going to see waves and waves of career placement players coming in so if someone was bypassed or snubbed there's still a chance that they make it to the game just because. Like you said the Ravens had 12 players selected which is tied for the most all time of an initial release of the roster and if they make it to the Super Bowl none of those players will be participating The same goes for whoever the n.f.c. Team representative is so all of those players will automatically be replaced and then you'll see some federal funds and other players who just decide not to participate you know Tom Brady has for instance has been selected. Obviously since every year since 2008 but he hasn't actually played in the game since 2005 so this tends to be a game for the younger players who are experiencing it earlier in their career and it's a bit of a celebration really of the n.f.l. At least that's the idea and as you say you know they have had problems trying to recreate a kind of fun atmosphere around the game do you think this is something that is going to be sustainable in the long run the prize will. The n.f.l. Has talked about making changes to it before several years ago around earlier this decade there was some talk about possibly discontinuing it or you know making wholesale revisions but the fact remains that this produces revenue for the league relative to the other all star games it still pulls in decent television ratings and thus makes money for the league it's something that generally as you said promotes the game of football so I think that there are inherent obstacles toward making this game everything that fans might want it to be but as long as it's making money for the league it's not going anywhere and you have an idea what it's like for the players because you know as you said for them to actually play in a you know as physically intensive as a normal and f.l. Game would be but it's really quite a moment isn't it to be selected to the Pro Bowl So how does that on a come about how to how are people selected to it yeah the vote is split up evenly between fans coaches and players so the fan vote is a significant one Lamar Jackson was the leading vote getter among fans but it's something that coaches and players also do they sometimes will tend to dismiss a Colts linebacker dairies Leonard for instance. Earlier this month sort of made reference to the fact that he didn't feel he was properly respected and that he didn't think he was going to make the Pro Bowl he subsequently was selected it's something that players will sort of alternatively dismiss but also it does mean something to them and it means something to their legacy because yeah I was going to say because the so many times where you hear about you know a player who used to play 101520 years ago and then described as an 8 time per. And it gives you an idea of just how good they were absolutely it's still a reference point for that you'll hear when someone's going to the Pro Football Hall of Fame how many times they've been selected to the Pro Bowl so it's it's obviously not the ultimate. Measuring stick for a player's worth but it's still something that. You know these players pay attention to and fans and media pay attention to well that's Mike Swartz from USA Today Sports thanks very much for him and on the way on b.b.c. Sounds this Christmas. This is b.b.c. Radio 5 live over a little on the b.b.c. Sounds a cool night on a Welcome back to the North American sports show on b.b.c. Radio 5 Live on James Wakem and in the next half hour we are going to hear from Mansfield as well he's going to be talking about the business of college sports and why one university has basically given up on its full that's all to come 1st I saw him still all the way. That he was. With Well let's talk about the Chicago Blackhawks and that assistant coach Mark Crawford now he is going to resume his normal g.t.s. With the team only a month after he was suspended for allegations of player abuse at previous n.h.l. Clubs or Ben pope is the Chicago Blackhawks beat reporter for The Chicago Sun Times Markoff or has been a coach and then it still dating back to round 90959096 he's going to round out a while and he's been accused by 4 former players who played and Vancouver and Los Angeles and 1999 to 2006 range were 2 cities he was coaching and at different times of being physically and verbally abusive includes. Seeing kicking and soaking players when they made a mistake on the ice or did something else that he didn't like and then crossing a line in terms of. His rants and and yelling out certainly with any coach you can expect some arse talk if you make a mistake but with him it was accused of going further than was necessary and and one player's incident sort of taking advantage of his childhood abuse history and sort of going into that. And 4 players have talked about this one later said that he was meaning to tell a story and wasn't trying to make any allegations or take down anyone's career but that's the background here Crawford now works for Chicago and was only hired here this summer so obviously it's been a while since any of these incidents happened and from the Blackhawks perspective they all pretty widely said that there hadn't been any concerning incidents and says hiring with the Blackhawks but obviously this was of concern considering how widespread the issue had been in the past yeah we should say as you mentioned this happened in previous coach instance so this was at the candidates and the Kings wasn't between 99 and 2006 Now what makes this particularly interesting I think is he's among cruel thirds reaction to what's been alleged and also what's happened to him and his suspension as a result so let's start with his reaction because he's kind of just put his hands up hasn't. Yes And I think he's learned from some of the prior coaches who in the past few months of sort of had their careers ended because of this that the best method is to not sort of hide it or act like it didn't happen or just sort of try to stay out of the spotlight but to get in front of it and and Mitt that he was wrong in what he did but that he's been in counseling for the past 9 years now and that he's he's changed and he's adapted as modern society and hockey culture has changed then. Yeah he basically admitted that the allegations are true and I think if he hadn't it would have been confirmed that they were so probably a smart move on that aspect and and he's basically said that he's not the same coach anymore and a bunch of different players with the Blackhawks and with the senators where he was for the past few years have come to his aid and agreed with that assessment so it sort of allowed him to keep going where other coaches were basically thrown under the bus completely for this and he's now going to resume his duties a month after being suspended and I imagine the must be quite a few people or a bit of reaction in Canada saying well is this enough penance for what he's alleged to have done. There is definitely a wide range of opinions about this subject and I think of some people were surprised certainly to see that he will be allowed to retire and it seemed as time went on and sort of the buzz died down a little bit about what he had done and after the initial story came out that seemed a bit more and more likely that he would be able to vent so loud to return and we found out on Monday that that would be the case but I think it is certainly some people are saying that I mean you I mean you punch and choke and kick players and that's abuse that can't be tolerated and there needs to be a precedent set that that that's not acceptable and in any circumstance a matter how long ago it was and there's also the line of thinking that I think a lot of the current Black Hawks talking to them in the locker room this morning have said that they feel that he's different now and that hockey culture was different now and that the fact that he's grown with it it is a nuff to warrant that he can continue to go on in this position a thing was interesting the black hole statement and I just I just read Israel today he says through our review we confirm the mark proactively sought professional counseling to work to improve and become a better communicator person and coach we learn that Mark began counseling in 2010 and has continued therapy on a regular basis since and we believe that he's learned from his past actions and I think what's interesting about that statement is as you say that this is now operating in a different culture to the coach that was previously in hockey and we've covered quite as few stories in the last few weeks around abuse in Hakeem professional ice hockey circles you've mentioned a couple times about the hockey coach of changing just how has he changed because this is not I don't think will be the last either the 1st or the last of the scandal. Well I think it certainly and this is true of modern society in general just become more more open and accepting of different people and different backgrounds and an emphasis more on teaching and learning and how to improve play and if one makes a mistake and nice what to do differently rather than just scolding them and and punishing them and I think that hockey is precedent a bit slower to adapt to that behind other aspects of society like like education and such but it's getting there and as Robin Lehner who is the black box goaltender and rather open minded and pretty honest player said today that he feels that if this is the standard and that everyone at any point in their hockey careers is responsible for what they did then a whole lot of people whole lot of coaches and G.M.'s and players and so forth need to start apologizing because this was a very widespread a couple decades ago and now it's not but when you go back and look at it a lot of things that were more common then even if they were still perhaps not the best thing to do now look very agreed just today so it's about sort of reckoning the different eras of the sport and finding a way to make that fair and equitable and fair today what players and coaches may have done in the past you know we should say you know the Chicago Blackhawks beat reporter so I'm not asking you for for this from a she can go perspective for side but you know we have had a few resignations already in a few dismissals already in hockey so people like for example Mike Babcock and Bill pate as Bill Peters resigned from the flames didn't they about caught fire by the Maple Leafs before allegations about him came out we've had the Stars coach Jim Mongomery as well who was fired last week for. As far as I know disclosed on professional Yandex do you think we're going to see more if this over the next few weeks and months. I would not be surprised to see more of this happening the n.h.l. Came out with a sort of statement and memorandum of sorts for moving forward that they can't handle surprises anymore and and entered in from the past coming out that no one knew about and that they need to get this on the table and and sort of have a reckoning year for the league to figure out what everyone's hiding under the table and get it in the open and determine the appropriate consequences for this so I think it will certainly continue to spill out as we go on throughout the rest of the season and all maybe we've had some of the most obvious offenders be outed so far I think maybe smaller incidents and coaches who aren't as famous may not be head coaches. I think we'll see some news about that start to come to certainly a very big moment for the league in terms of its off ice conduct and the culture and what we've been talking about that the 2 different cultures and and sort of coming to understand that the things are different now and how to reconcile that and do you think this could actually be helpful in the long run for the league from a fan perspective as well because you know maybe as part of this the league is going to attract a different nature a different type of fam. Oh absolutely and I think we've been seeing that for years now is. The league slowly still there's a lot of progress being made but slowly starts include more minority groups and it tries to expand the reach of its popularity and its marketing and and I think also with the decline of fighting and more strict rule enforcement I think we've seen that also contributing to it and this is just another aspect of that that hadn't really had the door opened before and now is wide wide open so I think this will certainly be part of the sports shift towards the 21st century and and the culture and nowadays and it certainly could attract a different kind of fan once all of this stuff has been addressed and as from he'll be back at stores in January. Yes his 1st game back will be in Vancouver ironically so that will be interesting to see and talking to the players now they were all thankful that they would get his experience and help the staff back I know it's overloaded some of the other coaches having to divvy up these duties in the meantime but Blackhawks made it clear that any further incidents or any new things are come out pretty tolerant standpoint they'll have so they'll be out there nice for a little while but I think. Seems like most people in the organization at least are happy that will be allowed to continue Well that's been paid from the Chicago Sun Times he is the beat reporter for The Chicago Blackhawks thanks very much to him time for this. Important thing. College football is big business in North America but is the bubble about to bust well Jacksonville universities upset some fans and athletes by announcing it's bringing an end to its football team which has been going for more than 20 years it says it's just not getting bang for its buck and it's the other colleges are considering making the same move and the Navy Williams writes about sports business for Bloomberg he's been looking into why Jacksonville University's decided to call time on its team Jacksonville University which competes in division one college football but the lower of the 2 levels of division one college football spent the last you know 18 months looking at its athletic department and specifically how it was spending money and where it was making money I concluded that football as an entity was just not worth it for the school you know they were spending multi-millions on the sport they were not getting that money back and you know it's true across its team. Era of college football but you know I think a lot of people think of college football as a huge money making venture and that's true for some schools the big schools that everybody's heard of but once you get down low enough it's actually a money suck and Jacksonville decided it just wasn't worth it to keep pumping money into it so how much are we talking he say multi $1000000.00 is typically how much does a football team cost a college yeah so from what I understand kind of looking at publicly available documents and also talking to administrators at the school I think the football team because my guess is around $2.00 and a half 1000000 dollars maybe something around there all told which doesn't sound like all that much but you know the entire athletic budget at a school like Jacksonville is probably around $50000000.00 if not smaller and again that's the money they're putting into it and they're not making that money back right so a lot of time schools and this is the thing that schools tell themselves at this level is that you know we're losing money on football but we're gaining exposure we're gaining some kind of intangible value for being having games that are on e.s.p.n. a Cape only etc. So you know it's hard to do the exact math but from what I understand I think football was probably a 2 and a half to $3000000.00 cost every year and they were not getting the bulk of that money back Ok can we just clarify then how it is that colleges do get a bit of that money back does it work like an ordinary professional sports league in that they obviously have a ticket revenue I suppose in merchandise but also television rights Yeah that's exactly right so you know college football teams really get make money in 3 ways right it's ticket sales it's media rights and then it's donations and if you were to think about a school like Ohio State right one of the richest programs in the country you know they sell $60000000.00 worth of football tickets every year they get about a $50000000.00 check for their media rights and then donations are probably in the $25.00 to $30000000.00 range right so all of those are extremely robust revenue streams. And that's why Ohio State's football team in terms of profit makes about $65000000.00 every year when you get down to the level of Jacksonville ticket sales are very very minor there's a centrally no money at all from television and donors are not certainly not giving $20000000.00 a year to the football program right so the economics become totally totally different and the way schools like Jacksonville fund their athletics because they don't have those those big time revenue streams is that they take money from the institution so that either you know direct money coming from the university to help cover costs or they're taking a direct cut out of everyone's to Ishan the called Student fees but let's say $50.00 from every student on campus every every semester they take that money and they use that to balance the budget you know and obviously both of those things which you know happens at the top level also for our you know schools that are in a higher state both of those things are I think damaging for public a public and private educational institution so it sounds as though a college sports team is effectively just a very big expensive adventure for a college to try and attract those donors are supposed to attract the best students and teachers and in this case the adverse just wasn't good enough Yeah I think that's I think that's exactly right that schools and you know there is a there's some optimism here from a lot of schools as well in that you know schools at the level where Jacksonville is oftentimes will think a if we keep doing well in football if we have a number of great years maybe donations start to pour in we start getting some momentum a lot of schools kind of use that as a platform to try to jump up to the higher division maybe jump to a different conference that there is one or 2 success stories that people can point to and say look this is a school who was at my level 20 years ago. So they got good the fans bought into it they started giving money to it you know they made a few moves and suddenly they're at a big conference and they're getting a media check and you know things have totally turned around and I think Boise State is a good example of that up in Idaho where you know they parlayed a good small football program into a football program that is now you know one of the best in the country and they get you know robust revenue checks because of it but you know you have to be have to be honest with yourself and your institution about whether that is a possibility right so while a lot of the a lot of his peers think that maybe that can be their future Jim Acosta's the president the Jacksonville University decided you know what I don't think this is realistic for us and as a result I'm going to do the financially proper thing as and pull back here and what's the reaction been you have to question it because we've seen a lot of you know we've seen schools make decisions like this either to get rid of football or move down to division and typically their reaction is vitriolic the president of Idaho when they announced they were moving down a tear his wife's car was vandalized his own car was vandalized people were calling for him to be fired I think in Jacksonville there's been maybe a little bit less outrage I also think they did things I mean they did things pretty well in terms of planning for this so you know they're guaranteeing scholarship for all the players if they want to stay at school so they're no longer playing football obviously but they get the rest of their education for free they're also working with career advisers and also and see a advisers to help students if they want to transfer to try to play football elsewhere the school is going to going to help them achieve that and they're also paying out the rest of their coaching contracts so you know if you're a football coach at Jacksonville and you had a 2 year contract with another year left you're going to get that money so I think they were very careful to try to make sure they were doing this the right way not kind of leaving students or coaches stranded on the sidelines of the program you've spoken. I've been having huge people consulting colleges on this issue what is the verdict is the advice that other colleges should be considering this will say Yeah I think if you want to if you talk to consultants you know they say everything they say everything is every school is different right so there are schools which you know this makes sense and schools and which doesn't but I am increasingly talking to consultants who are genuinely confused why schools at lower tiers of college football continue to spend this much money and if you look at the numbers over the past decade the number of school schools playing be one football is increasing it's actually increasing by a pretty decent clip and that comes at a time when attendance is going down tendencies down in college football I think 11 of the past 12 years it might even be more than that and you know the general thought process and you know college football is if you don't have students going to games when they're students they're not going to donate money when they're not students anymore and they're probably not going to watch games on t.v. All of that hurts you know all 3 of those big revenue streams that we talked about so you know while the number of college football teams is increasing I think a lot of people on the inside especially consultants are starting to wonder if that maybe is smarter for teams to stop offering football like Jacksonville or maybe you know do it in a smaller way i.e. Kind of moving down a tier is what we're talking about here a possible existential threat to college football as we know it you said right at the beginning that people look at it and assume it's this big money making business but as you also say it's costing more and more money and if they're not getting value for that then could we end up seeing a lot of colleges follow Jacksonville's lead I think the answer should be yes but I felt the answer was yes for a while now and as I said you know the number of schools offering it has gone up so you know it's kind of unclear if you know Jacksonville is a canary in the coal mine or if. They are just an outlier and teams are going to keep doing this it does certainly seem clear if you look at the finances of college football across the country the gap between the haves and the have nots is widening by the day and as we talk you know more about ideas such as paying players for their services or letting these players market themselves and get some money that way I think that will even further kind of draw out the difference between the haves and the have nots so my guess is you know college football and maybe college sports of the whole is going to go through this this massive restructuring in the next maybe 567 years as a lot of those changes happen and yes I wouldn't be shocked if in the end we see a lot more a lot fewer teams playing a top tier college football than we have right now I suppose what you describe. Actually applies to most professional sports here in the u.k. And over there in North America in that it doesn't always make financial sense the gap between the rich and poor is widening but somehow the ordinary rules of business just don't seem to apply when it comes to school exactly I think that's I think that's exactly right and you know for the the administrators they are you know constantly holding on to the it in tangible ways in which football helps their helps their university and again you know there's it's hard to quantify but but we are starting to see kind of the 1st set of university presidents and even athletic directors saying you know what maybe we were wrong about this or are we tried it it didn't work out and maybe the financially responsible thing for us to do is just to not go down this path anymore that's been Navy Williams a sports business writes If a Bloomberg on the growing cost of college football and wide Jacksonville University's bringing an end to its team thank you Mitch and that is it from the North American sports show for this evening and have a lovely Christmas but before we go I have invited Rahul Tandon of opponent fame here because.
