Thanks with no time for the Sunday papers with the no to Meredith and Nick got it take. Yes or stop with the Sunday Telegraph headline cabinet brags that truce threatens to unravel and this is an astonishing story actually and I think we should all pause and feel sorry for Mrs Croly and Nolan for having had all these and experts on all week explain to us exactly what full alignment between the e.u. According to the paper trees amaze aides have been privately briefing burst jumps in and Michael Gove that this phrase is meaningless and not binding and and see the impression that as far as the British government think they just told them that to get them on wards Well I think this is the whole sort of fudge thing isn't it you know that nothing's agreed until everything's agreed and as far as certainly is brigadiers are concerned I think within the cabinet this is only just begun and whatever is purportedly agreed is up in the air again I can't imagine how they are as government would feel about that to be honest and I read a report that said alignment is a very difficult word to translate into German So if any German speakers are there to help with that one I think we'd be very I think it has no legal authority Don't be an ass and I think. That's that's something for lots of lawyers to discuss but certainly you know there was an agreement made where the other. Reports. Yes Well we heard this story on the news a moment ago and it's in the Mail on Sunday and the Sunday Telegraph as well hopes rising for the jailed mother not the guy. After Boris Johnson's frank talks in Iran not the headline actually in the Mail on Sunday diplomatic sources said that the new trial which had been set for today may not take place a move that the woman's husband Richard crop have said would be hugely positive to . Quick reminder of the bot grind as for most people know that Mr Ghauri Ratcliffe is a Jew a British Iranian national and she was held as she was about to fly home at from Iran after visiting her family in April 26th change then 8 months in solitary confinement before being convicted and sentenced to 5 years in jail for plotting to overthrow the Iranian regime charges her husband describes as utter nonsense on their daughter Arabella she's still in Iran living with Ms cigar eruptive parents but of course you'll remember that bars Johnson falsely implied that Mr Gary rocket could have been in Iran to train journalists and of course you know many critics have said that the foreign secretary admitted get off my well have worsened her plight so it seems to me he was reflecting on this that he certainly has a moral duty if nothing else to do his utmost for this woman and you know her mental states aren't really fragile Her husband says. His wife is really on edge about the trial and the hope that Mr Johnson's visit might produce a break Syria and he says she asked me every time will I be home by Christmas and she can't hear any hesitation in my voice when I answer her and he says I promised her I do everything I could to bring her home by Christmas and we haven't quite given up hope on not. Well the papers are full today of stories about about plans to to get to fast track 2 year university degree courses. Say students getting into debt well the whole idea like actually I should save money and it is just seems to be part of this much broader debate that is that's breaking out around universities in university degrees and what value for money they are and apparently there's going to be a new According to Joe Johnson who's the education minister who's writing in the in the Sunday Telegraph that is going to be a new regulator set up which should be called the office for students to ensure that they get value for money in teaching contact time assessment and support but interesting they this route about this is a this is going on again against the backdrop of the route about vice chancellor and that pay packages and we were talking about that earlier in the Poverty Action and getting in to this astonishing isn't it that there's a Sussex University research is that there would be very fast chances have just the ordinary foot soldiers out there. They've done a piece of research on that on this which is in the Mail on Sunday partly Vice-Chancellor remuneration raised by 54 percent between 19972015 that's 4 times that of a lecturer and yet when they were looking at this and examining this they couldn't find a linkage between the performance of vice chancellors not sure that I said I was good negotiators Well I mean but against a country you know they when students will pull up say that they're actually paying for that cannot be justified that's extraordinary is I think is a big crisis don't you in terms of what's going on Bode with useless leaders you know the Sunday Times has an interesting story a story with the headline taint of Burma's genocide jams and the Bee sapphires Jade from Burma and is apparently considered you know the incredible high quality jewels revered among. But very nice gemstones used in high end jewelry made by famous Western brands are not at the center of an international outcry over the persecution of Muslims and now what's happened is Cartier the luxury jewelry jewelry has assured shoppers that it won't buy gemstones from Burma after campaigners expose the company for selling necklaces and earrings featuring sapphires from the former British colony. So this is a very interesting story for Norm I think so yeah there's actually quite a lot to it and apparently it's all got more intense because there's been a surge in demand for rubies and of course you know these these companies are looking to Burma to source them potentially. Activists from the International Campaign for their remaining year plan next to target the company Bogart's whichever tied to several necklaces and earrings featuring these 3 b. Sapphires and Jade from Burma but apparently it can take years to actually own arse these gems and they're also controversial for the role they play in the funding of Burma's armed forces which of course are driving rain gear from their villages and the country's lucrative gem mining and auction business is dominated by current and former generals through military controlled enterprises and crony companies so it's actually an incredibly complex and messy situation. Talk about where you should 30 rights. Yeah. I left this whole thing around I love all stories is great there's a great. Piece in The Sunday Telegraph and they had a line folic shadows cast Stonehenge as part of fertility cult and this is you know this is are they still enjoying mystery about once or they're always making up theories about trucking if there is you know the latest one is from a professor Terence meeting and he's developed a theory that the Stones were designed to create a sort of fertility shadow play whereby this is alright to say isn't it is the thing the thing you know answering well where by one stone. Cast a kind of moving folic shadow which would which was designed to hit a central female stone which is symbolized abundance which is sort of Oh very well that he sort of says that he's It's a bit like the drum bag stone circle in County Cork which he's photographed hundreds and hundreds of times all back more you know although they don't lintels on them well this is it you see this is a bit of this is a sort of killer problem with his theory isn't that you've got Professor Mike take a piece and for the University College London is quoted in the article saying why would fall I have lintels on top it's just bonkers these are serious. These are serious matters indeed of their you know Ok. So story from the front of the Sunday Times civil partnerships to go straight there's about heterosexual couples who want to enter civil partnership and have the same legal rights as those who are married that there be a private member's bill expected to receive government support when it gets its 2nd reading and February and used as opposed to might say well why don't they just get married but couples who are taking this action including a couple called Charles Keaton and Rebecca Stein felt they've been at this for a while and they say they're not they don't want to get married is it not comfortable with that but they want the financial and legal protection that a civil partnership provides to some other people have problems maybe the religious connotations of marriage circle origin's issues of ownership and control they don't want to get married but they want to have a civil partnership looks like they're going to be able to and I've just noticed in that Reuters reporting and in view of the story began with Nick about alignment Reuters reporting the safety of state James Brokenshire says a soft border will be achieved by either securing a new customs partnership or a highly streamlined approach to customs. Like well we're going to hear a lot of them on and on and on the nice story here by an ox and that this is. Linked back to riches and poverty that we've been kind of this area it doesn't reflect well mailed all the stories I'd like to be in about Agent history have maybe this is this is a fascinating story in the old server and this is this is where scientists have been trying to trace a kind of origins of the super rich and they did this by studying 62 ancient communities and they found that they cast the world across the world where they found that the gap between rich and poor really started to emerge when farmers in the West started to use oxen because I like them to cultivate more land and those who had some actually became wealthier and those who didn't became poor and they contra start with a new world where they didn't have oxes of available to help farming and found that there was a lot less social inequality in ancient societies there you are poverty inequality explain to us all dying to get a guy thanks very much guys so that's it for this week's of the sequence for me washing McCauley producer Seamus Boyd and all the team you can listen again at b.b.c. Today as the 2nd Sunday of Advent the season leading up to Christmas when we reflect on the promise of God's coming. As part of this tradition we were read a few promises from the Old Testament Scriptures and lights are 2nd. And around and all. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light those who lived and I wound deep darkness on them light shined. I will lead the blind by a road they do not know. By the past they have not know him I will guide them. I will turn the darkness before them into light the rough places and to level grind . These are the things I will do. And I will not forsake them. We delight this council as a sign of the coming of Christ. That has been worship God in the name of Jesus Christ as we saying hills of the North rejoice. Mrs Valerie little will not lead us in prayer. Let us pray. Love. We praise you again for the softened season this time of preparation for Thanksgiving challenge and reflection were. The previous year that in fulfillment of your eternal purpose you came to our worlds in Christ revealing the extent of your love showing us the way to a law in the us to know you for ourselves. Open our hearts to all you would say. Is. We praise she is that she came again in Christ to His disciples after His resurrection bringing joy where there had been sorrow hope where there had been despair unfair if where there had been taught we praise you that through your Holy Spirit you make Christ real to eat each day finding us with Paul are his peace love. We thank you for the promise that Christ will come again to establish His kingdom to begin a new era to bring us all your people life everlasting open our hearts to all you would say. Is. Loving God for gifts that so easily we lose sight of the message of. Allowing its wonder to be swamped by our busy preparations for Christmas by concerns which are so often on important by our car listening to us and even our own willingness to follow your ways. Forgive us that at times we forget your promises we frustrate your spine. We lose sight of your love. Open our hearts to all you would say. Make us we pray through this time with worship through your lifting words through the fellowship we share through the risen Christ open our hearts to all you would say no I. So may we truly celebrate the advent of your psalm and be equipped to serve him better to the glory a few are named. Children and Young people are a very important part of our community here in fish to it and so I'm delighted to be able to invite our Assistant Minister John O'Donnell to share a few ads and thoughts with the boys and girls. Boys and Girls Do you know the Christmas story of the wise men some people say the 3 wise men of the Bible doesn't actually tell us how many wise men there were but what the Bible does tell us about them is that they came from the east and they came all the way to Jerusalem with their gifts because they had seen a special star in the sky and they knew it meant that the new king had been born so looking for the new king they went to the big important city Jerusalem and they went to see the big important ruler whose name was King Herod and they asked him Where is the new king who had been born. But the new king was not found in the big important palace in the big important city big important Herod didn't know who they were talking about. So the wise men left the big city. The new king wasn't there but then they looked up and they saw the star again. And the star led them out of the big important city and into a little town called Bethlehem. And there they found Jesus not in a big palace with loads of riches. He was in an ordinary poor house was poor parents but they knew he was the king because they were looking so hard for him and the star showed them the way. Jesus is the true king the real King of you and me and everybody even though he didn't live in a palace and boss people around like Herod. Even though he was poor even though when he grew up he was a builder working hard with his hands he's the king even though he traveled around and sometimes didn't even have a place to sleep he's the king. When he grew up he was even arrested and killed but he's still the king because he is God's King the best being the most important and God raised him up and he is still alive he is still the king. So even though Jesus didn't often look like what we think a king might look like those who really looked carefully would see him for who he is the wise man looked carefully and the star showed them the way Jesus friends looked carefully and they listened to what he had to say and they believed that he really was the true king God's King. What about nowadays boys and girls how can people learn that Jesus is the real king or maybe they can learn it in church maybe they can learn it this time of year through hearing the Christmas story. Maybe they're listening to the radio this morning maybe they can read it for themselves in their Bibles. But one very important way that people can find out that Jesus really is the king is by you and me. We believe that Jesus is our king and when we live in ways that show him that show them that he is our king. And we live in ways that show them what he is like and want to know more. When we are kind like Jesus was kind our friends and neighbors can see a little bit about what he is like. When we live differently because we want to obey the king they will see that we really believe Jesus is our king. And when we love one another the world will see what Jesus and His Kingdom are like and just like the Star led the wise men to meet God's King You can lead others to him too so we're going to sing a song now all about how we want the world to see who Jesus is by the lives that we live so let's all stand and sing our children song Shine from the inside out. One of our great strengths and blessings is the rich variety of worship styles that we enjoy here in Fisher way we love to worship God in both contemporary and traditional ways one of the most famous parts of Scripture that we reflect on during Advent is a song of worship sung by a young teenage girl called Mary. And the until of God brought her the amazing news that God's Spirit would enable her to miraculously can see and that this child would be the Son of God to see if you're of the world this song is called the Magnificat or Mary song Our current will know I sing this song in the setting n.c. By Stanford. He Our Bible reading today comes from Matthew's Gospel where news of Jesus' birth reaches a group of astrologers they follow a bright star which leads them to the new born king when they reach him they present him with 3 special gifts it is read for us by Mr Peter Lindsay. The reading is from Matthew chapter to verses $1.00 to $12.00. And the time of King Harold after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea wise man from the skin to Jerusalem asking where is the child who has been born King of the Jews. For we observed this rising I have come to pay him how much when King Herod heard this he was frightened and all Jerusalem with them. And calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people he inquired of them were the Messiah was to be born they told them and Bethlehem of Judea for sure it is being written by the prophets and you Bethlehem in the lounge of Judah are by no means least among the rulers of Judah for from you shall come earlier he was to shepherd my people Israel . Then this parrot secretly called for the wise man learn from them the exact time when the star had appeared then he sent them to Bethlehem saying Go and search Tilsley for the child and when you find him bring me words that I mail shall go on pay him home which. When they had heard the case they said there ahead of them when the store that they had seen of this rising until it stopped over the place where the child was when they saw that the store had stopped they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house they saw with nearly as mother. Had a home and opening their treasure chest they offer them gifts of gold frankincense and myrrh on having been warned in the dream not to return to Harrods they left for their own country. This is the word of the Lord. I don't know about you but one of the things I love about Christmas is that it's a time for visiting Who do you look forward to visiting this Christmas who are you excited to see coming through your door I remember when I was young we always used to go and visit my granny and ground are my cousins of Christmas and one of the things I loved by doing that if I'm honest is that I knew that before I left there Hice they would always give my sister and me a present to take home we weren't allowed to open the presents until Christmas Day So the whole way home in the car my sister and I would fail and ship the presents and see if we could guess what was inside. And his biography of the life of Jesus Matthew tells us that when the Lord Jesus was born some very clever scientists came to visit him these men were called. They were experts in astronomy they are better known as the 3 wise men although the Bible doesn't actually tell us how many of them there were. People had been saying for years that a special King would be born in the small time of Bethlehem one night the wise men saw a special bright star in the sky and when they saw it they were so excited they knew that this star was showing them that a special King had been born and so they saddled up their donkeys and they travel to Bethlehem to see the baby Jesus and to bring him 3 special gifts many of us are familiar with what the gifts were gold frankincense and myrrh but I wonder have you ever realized that each of these gifts were very carefully chosen. Each of them are extremely significant and appropriate for this new born prince for each of these gifts represents something very important about Jesus. And as we reflect upon their deeper significance for a few minutes this morning we will learn invaluable lessons about why the birth of this baby was the most significant event in the whole of human history. The 1st present at the Wise Men brought was gold in the Bible gold is always something that was given to someone who was a king a king would have a gold throne a king would wear a gold crime a cane would wear expensive gold jewelry and the Bible gold is also something that was used to remind people of God and that's because gold is pure and is the most precious thing that we can think of. That's why God's people the Israel lights made some of their temple furniture out of gold to remind them that God was there with them. The wise men were very clever and bringing Jesus a gift of gold it was a perfect gift for a b. a B. Here as well as being human is also actually God. It was a perfect gift for a baby who is actually the king of the entire our uniforms. You know it's easy for us to sing the words joy to the world the Lord has come let our through receive her came out of Karl servants but the challenge that this text is with this morning. Is deeply personal and perhaps even a little uncomfortable for if this story is true. Then we are forced to ask the question. I prepared to buy and worship Jesus like the wise man did. For you see the truth is if we want God to be our friend and helper in life. Then we must be prepared to submit to his authority in our lives we need to be willing to hand him the keys of our lives and say Ok. You're in control. I'm prepared to pay whatever you tell me to do. The good news is that the King of Kings is worthy of his title he is completely fair utterly reliable overwhelmingly generous and deeply committed to our welfare his commands are not a burden they are the wise advice of a loving parent which when followed should enable us to enjoy our lives and relationships more fully Christianity is not something negative it's hugely positive. So let me encourage you to ally the King of Kings to be your king this Christmas let me also encourage you and a few moments of quiet before the fire to ask the question. King Jesus is there anything that you want me to do. The 2nd present the wise men brought was frankincense it is a milky white that comes from the tree. To get this a person would make a long cut in the bark of the tree and let the liquid run I die in the tree trunk. As it ran down the tree a good big can to harden in the sun and after a void 2 weeks it would be hard enough to break off into little pieces almost like little plastic rocks these little pieces of frankincense could then be sold they were very expensive they could be crushed using a stone into a fine powder not Potter could then be mixed with water and oils to make nice smelling perfumes but as well as being used to make her fume frankincense Potter was used by priests in the Jewish temple the priest would burn the frankincense and the smoke would rise up into the air and make the air smell really nice it's a bit like what happens in some churches today when the priest or the people saw the smoke going up and when they smelled the nice smell of the burning frankincense it would remind them of high when they talked to God their prayers would go up to heaven and God would hear them. It also reminded them that the priest would pray to God for them the wise men were very clever and bringing Jesus a gift of frankincense it was the perfect gift for of b.m.p. Who would be the greatest and most important priest of all. Frankincense reminds us that Jesus is our griot high priest he is alive in heaven today and there he is always praying to God the Father forms and that means that because he is alive we can talk to him every day we can ask Him to forgive us when we do wrong we can ask him to help other people who we know are sick or in trouble we can thank him for all the good things that he gives us and does for us we can ask him for wisdom and guidance when we have to make difficult decisions we can ask him for strength and courage to feel difficult circumstance we can ask him to give us the ability to change where we know we need to. Christianity is not about a list of rules and regulations it is about having a deep and timid relationship with the God who made us and he loves us more than we can ever imagine the Christian message is not good advice it is good news the great news that through Jesus Christ we can enter a loving relationship with the living God and through that relationship we can be transformed into the people that we long to be through that relationship we can receive all the help that we need for every day through that relationship we can know love and joy and peace and happiness through that relationship we can have and make a positive difference to the lives of people or rhinos. So let me encourage you to believe that the Christmas story is true to call I to Jesus to invite him to be part of your life let me encourage you to talk to him every day to share every detail of your life with them just as you would your closest friend. I can't tell you exactly why prayer works all I know is that talking to God definitely helps and definitely makes a difference so go on take a step a feel. Talk to Jesus this Christmas. And the last present the wise men brought was murder murder is a bit like frankincense it is a red liquid that comes out of the committee for a tree it is collected in the same way as frankincense like frankincense and myrrh was very expensive it was used to make incense people also put it in their drinks to take away p.n. That they had in their body but one of the most important uses for murder was that when it was crushed into a pot or it was placed on people when they were dead in order to make their bodies smell nice or. The wise men knew what they were doing when they brought Jesus a gift of murder they understood something of the old prophecies me about this special king they knew that though he would be griot he would experience much suffering he would be despised and rejected a man acquainted with great. He would be pierced for our transgressions and bruised for our iniquities and yet somehow through the punishment he would suffer we would receive peace mysteriously through the wounds that he would experience we would find him. It was only later that through the testimony of the disciples that we would understand the filming of these prophecies made up by Jesus the suffering King. The murder reminds us that Jesus died on the cross. And this was no accident he willingly gave up his life to take the judgment for all the wrong things that we have ever done or ever will do every wrong thought every wrong action every wrong word Jesus willingly bore the full of God the Father for every human when he died on the cross and the great news is is that if we are genuinely sorry for the wrong things in our lives and if we believe that Jesus died to take the judgment that we deserve then God will forgive us completely and forever. And surely that is the greatest Christmas present we can have. So let me encourage you this Christmas to stop stressing yourself by trying to somehow make yourself good enough to be accepted by God The truth is will never be completely acceptable because we've all disobeyed Him We all deserve his judgment that's why Jesus came to die in our pleads to take the punishment we deserve and. It's only when we really believe and trust in what Jesus has done for us that God can accept us not because of what we have done because we are accepting what Jesus has done for us. I want to wish all of you a very happy Christmas and a blessedly year I hope you have great fun and great excitement as you open your presents together with your family but as you do that mean courage to remember the greatest gift of all and the guests that the wise man brought to him the goal reminds us that Jesus is God and King. What is a your King are you willing to do whatever he tells you. The frankincense reminds us that he is our grand high priest alive in heaven for ever Why don't you talk to him this Christmas. The murder of minds is that he died that we might be forgiven for all our sins are you trusting in what he has done for you at the cross or are you some high trying to frantically make your own way to go out. Weird I'm going to spend a few moments praying for others let me encourage you to include a few people that you know who need God's help our prayers be led by must. Let us pray. The Lord Jesus Christ at this time of goodwill among all we pray for peace in our world an end to division and discord hatred and to still ity death and destruction. Prince of Peace. As we speak of peace but in our hearts we do not believe. It possible when we look at our world we see little hope of an end to its troubles we are skeptical on searched and filled with diets cautious about expressing any optimism. Even where there are signs of hope and moves towards reconciliation we know it will take many years before we dare believe it is really possible. But we pray in this advent season when you our ability to look forward to rekindle our belief in the future. And restore our capacity to hope for better things. Prince of Peace Yes. Help us as we remember your coming as we serve you now and as we look forward to your coming again to anticipate your kingdom through this service we offer and the lives that we live. Prince of Peace. Teach us to wait for that day when your throne will be established your justice prevailed and the earth will be filled with the knowledge of you as the waters cover the sea Prince of Peace. For your name sake man. It's been a joy and privilege to share and worship with you this morning thanks for tuning in we hope you've enjoyed it. Our closing him low he comes with clouds descending is traditionally a song during. It reminds us that it is also the season when we reflect that this c.m. King Jesus will one day come again to judge all humanity and to reward his field full followers with eternal life in a perfect new world. It is a constant reminder to watch and be ready until live lives that are good and. Let's stop and sing together. So made the grade of the Lord Jesus Christ the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us all. Morning Service came from.
