1741. The sound. Radio. Hello morning Jordan Sparks with a really busy one the swarming interesting one with the Stars British train service along the Dawlish line Jews for the weather the people of course on b.b.c. Radio. Another day where we have an international flavor hearing from Europeans living here in to have a Thanksgiving week as well isn't it this week we're hearing from Devon's American connections and also why women in Wimpole have been if you haven't immediately at the moment just be born. Women in Wimpole a baring all for charity we think it was it was quite fun we made friends that we didn't know before I mean it's a quick way to get to know somebody isn't it if you're in the throne in that position in that situation be very careful of what. You can argue with it Ok I knew we were below all metaphorically in this hour b.b.c. Radio Devon now on my way to late 10183 text. Starting your message with the identified just looking at some of the news stories not the front pages I'll turn it into stories in the papers this morning we were talking about the world Scrabble championships last week what we heard from some of the contenders Richard Green was in talk in the warm up to the event did you hear what happened a New Zealander won it marginal Richards and he won it for the 2nd year running with a 140 point word score 140 well bring him so ashore. Got his hands on the title he paid Australian born David Eldar 31 and the best of 5 I'm claim the 6200 pounds prize money I can't begin to imagine how you would score 140 points. With one word you would have to have a triple there's a triple word isn't there on a Scrabble board and you'd have to use maybe a k. As well as a Q That's that's a tough one isn't it I mean you had this story about farmers this is good farmers a collectively trying to put a bit of pressure on McDonald's and it hasn't quite worked yet but I think this idea is brilliant and I think it could work quite easily the farmers want McDonald's to interact more with their drive through customers and what they want them to date is to print the customer's car registrations on the bags that they hand over to try to put a halt to littering because suddenly we hear people are throwing their bags out the window Don't worry if the car registration was on those bags would it stop littering there's a thing we've also been talking this warning about the price of tickets if you go to a concert or sports event this because you go go is in the news this morning and it's buying up another ticket agency and it's sad is that it would post stop or do its best to put a stop to tickets and inflated prices we seem to have heard this before don't mean what you think and do you cringe when you look at the add ons that you sometimes have to pay administrative costs and I think sometimes you know I've I've paid this does it cost $7.00 pounds 50 to post the tickets only on the go to pay the soft as well. But they'll be dealing in thousands of tickets with that does it really have to cost that much the administrative cost anything we're talking about this morning a bunch of 3 hour checks number start your message with the word devil in films this piece earlier about watching films every year when it comes on to the festive season even though you know what's going to happen or you know the script inside out. It's a comfort to watch we heard was it Jill earlier mentioned Wizard of Oz is that every year yeah I see that but I don't watch films at all can you watch a film over and over and over again when you know what's going to happen our phone numbers are free 108-081-0134 now on b.b.c. Radio Devon 9 minutes after 8 across the Atlantic of course it's Thanksgiving week what about our American friends celebrating here in Devon and why we thought we should find out more about Thanksgiving of Americans through the experience of those living here so each day were mentioning and meeting one such person today a true Texan Tara Wall car. Tara good morning to you. Good morning garden how are you very well thank you which part of Texas to originate from I am from Dallas suburb north of Dallas I've got to admit last year I went to Texas How was it I was Ok I was only there 45 minutes. Where you at d.f.w. International Airport I was a Houston Ok for a change of flight but what I saw was great how long have you been in Devon. I've been in Devon for about 4 and a half years now and what brought you here if I may ask I came here and nationally in a previous relationship and I've stayed so initially I came here with. With an e.u. Citizen so it's interesting times with Roxette I know I could get in the morning but so how does an American view Breck's it. And it's pretty distressing if I can be frank that something Americans are known for but at least it is distressing because. Because of so many unknowns to be honest you know it's really hard to get information and there is a lot riding on you know simply everything is good might be happening with bikes on it and there's not a lot for. Those of us who are here and we don't really have much knowledge as to sort of what's going to be happening so a lot of people having to make contingency plans or just sort of keep going about their daily lives without knowing. You know essentially what our rights are going to be over the next few years so it's a little bit distressed saying excuse me for asking because this wasn't a Buy I spoke to the conversation to go. All the other things that make you think is my future still in Darfur. Yeah I'm also still happy to talk about Thanksgiving as well. Yes I mean I'm still hoping that I have a future and I haven't I really enjoy my work here I enjoy my life here. And it's you know there's a lot of cultural differences but ones that I've I've now sort of cozied up into and I'm really enjoying it here I'm working in Plymouth So it's an extra exciting time to be implemented specially as an American because we're approaching the. Celebrations of. The sailing of the Mayflower next year so it's sort of interesting being on the other side of the Atlantic and being a part of those discussions as well but yes I'm hoping that also be around as we hope you are as well you say that there are similarities Devon you work in Plymouth but Devon has lots of open space maybe not as much maybe not as openness to access but to enjoy the great outdoors being a Texan you must stay absolutely the weather is a little bit different so I do miss the heat of tax day as you know I'm I'm somebody who really enjoys the sun and I'm looking out my my window right now I can sort of see the sea a little bit from where I am but it's a cloudy foggy very very Plymouth day today so one of the things I love about living in Devon is how easy it is to get to. Get to the outdoors you know you can get to the sea you can get the more hours you can take a lovely country walk and that's something that I really do enjoy but of course it's a very different kind of. A misfire than what you would find in Texas and Texas you know especially growing up in Dallas you know excited to have to drive from where I lived maybe about 45 minutes to an hour and you'd be out in the countryside and for hilly is Devon is Texas is flat and thought the hometown that I'm from is called Plano which is a sort of rough translation of the word plains or you know flat. Thanksgiving coming up this week what is it after tomorrow isn't it you still one tire of the hose the traditions of Thanksgiving even though your with us now in England I do Thanksgiving is actually on Thursday the 28th. Yes I I love Thanksgiving it's it's one of my absolute favorite holidays and I get very high. Homesick every single year because I haven't been able to go home for Thanksgiving since moving here so I still uphold that tradition because Thanksgiving is a massive tradition in my family we usually have about 20 to 30 people come over so we have tables that are set up all through the House it's a massive banquet style we have family that drives. You know some of them will drive about 12 hours to get to our family home and it's it's a really big deal and so every year I will Skype with my family so we sort of write before everybody sits down to dinner they give me a call and I sort of been passed around the family table and everybody gives me a quick hello and become part of the tradition oh. Yeah and I've been really fortunate and just in my time living over here that. Have always sort of found groups of Americans and we tend to find each other and make sure that no one's alone on Thanksgiving and so we always sort of have a have a gathering so I'm really lucky this year I've got a gathering of friends are going to be doing a Thanksgiving out Morton Hampstead and I might be doing just a little Thanksgiving just because I do miss that the certain foods that we have traditionally for Thanksgiving. And might be doing that on Thursday as well one final thing I'd love to ask you if. You are an Archie Reisa the. New our sons are opening up in Plymouth tell us one thing that we should know about American arch plays Yes. It's it's an interesting question you sound sexy feel like I'm going to be stating the obvious here but really the 1st thing that comes to mind is scale size it's big it's huge and this is something that only really struck me once I went back home after spending a lot of times in the arts and cultural visual sphere here and in the u.k. One of the 1st places I visited when I went back to visit America was the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco and I walked into a room that had a work of art by Ellsworth Kelly who is a 1970 s. Artist known for his minimalist works and it was just a huge huge room dedicated to one large fan shaped work of art and and that's something you know both the scale of the work of art but also the ambition of how it's exhibited. Is something that you don't find in the u.k. Or in Europe and just to give you a bit of perspective I was thinking about this one this one particular work of art and held large it was it took up the entire wall in Francisco. But I'd say one painting one work on the wall that same wall I'm going to be putting I feel not giving away too much here but maybe it's a bit of a tease fear listeners I'm going to be putting about 30 paintings on the same size so. You know you know. Exactly. Good work and you know I hope a bit of a tease for people to come down to Clinton 2020 to see us when we open in the spring because it's a great opportunity for the city well we really appreciate it's hard this morning and you say there are a few Americans are and tomorrow will be meeting in America musician the concert pianist he lives. Plays and play with so lost going to be fun but meanwhile Happy Thanksgiving to you and enjoy your link up with Chuck surfs thank you you're very welcome Tara walk up the Merican living locally we are marking Thanksgiving you know in a different way this week I think you very interesting way top of the morning news headlines here. Black Friday fast approaching isn't it traditionally the Friday after Thanksgiving which we mention just like there are several shops to great deals on offers on their stock or do they all start in America people have Thanksgiving off and then they wanted to keep trade going after Thanksgiving so they brought in Black Friday because the Americans really have a long weekend consumer rights organization which have found that just one in 20 so called Black Friday deals a cheaper than other times of the year an estimated $8000000000.00 thoughts we spend over the 8 days up to and including Black Friday how can we make sure we're spending cash on a genuine discount I think we need which will assist warning out I'm French as a consumer rights editor with which what if you find out they're not a morning well 83 popular products last Black Friday these were faking It's like speak. His sound bars kitchen appliances tumble dryer as and we found that just 4 of those products were actually at their cheapest on Black Friday itself they were cheaper of the times of the year we even found one tumble dryer for sale Curry's p.c. World for 199 pounds on Black Friday it was 20 pounds cheaper than that just 2 weeks before it just shows how important it is that you were doing your research before splashing out on any supposed Black Friday deals this year and spend time doing look at other stores look at other sites online compare the prices of similar things or even exactly the same things as you were intending to buy Would that be good advice Adam you are stealing some of what best advice I'm sorry I'm sorry so do your research is key the beauty Eve shopping online is it makes it incredibly easy to compare prices as well but the most important thing is don't be sucked in by the hype to be honest black money comes with a lot of hype increasingly say my inbox is absolutely stuffed right now with e-mails from retailers promising me some some of the best deals around ever been seen by humankind and our research shows that a lot of these just do not stack up in reality I think you need to put a high to one side and basically do your research do you have any particular products that you're after right now and what kind of price is a you happy to pay so it's something you want and it costs less than you wanted to spend anyway then regardless of whether it's been cheaper earlier or not that represents a good deal to you the real danger here is for people who are just in the market for deals they're just happy to go whatever deal they want and not really sure what they're after they're just browsing you could end up buying something that isn't really that good a deal and we could end up with a product that isn't particularly good Eva so I can recommend this and offer make sure you doing your research for splashing out this year but there will be people listening to you on the radio now Adam saying I thought there were laws not rules laws against companies advertise ing something as being reduced when actually it's not. We haven't seen any examples of any retailer is actually breaching the rules around how you market but are they doing those rules while you say they were flying very close to the move. But they can do that there's nothing illegal in doing so you bet they are flying close to the limits. This is a huge season for retailers across the country whether it's brick and mortar stores or online clearly Black Friday is an opportunity to sell a lot of stock ahead of Christmas and it is an opportunity for us if we know what we're after to pick up some pretty good bargains in the run up to Christmas Day For example when gift giving or just for yourself as well so you're out of the point. You know I'm not actually off the end if this year last year was after a new telly. The old one it completely party would turn on just seemingly whenever it wanted to not when I wanted to which was good fun. So after the t.v. An email came in actually we've some pretty promising deals last Black Friday and I did have a quick look on there which reviews out and it turned out the t.v. I was eyeing up was a dying boy so I did avoid that so I idea why my employer they're saving me from wasting money on a t.v. Brilliance here from you this morning good advice as always either from which magazine. Safe shopping. Thank you Adam French consumer rights editor which do you agree with that view done a bit of homework and been horrified by what you find if you understand it takes like one trouble 3 and start your message with the devil you can forget Calendar Girls Can you mention I don't watch films even I know about Calendar Girls the w.i. Group in Yorkshire the members there posed naked for a calendar the film star are Helen Mirren didn't and Julie Walters Devon has its own group of women to rival that but already having done a naked calendar they're doing something different this year they're wrapping up. Laura Winter wimple their accident to catch up with them Joe Wilson began by telling her about the group the wonders of Whimple are an amazing group of women all who live or have a very strong connection with the village of Wimpole this isn't the 1st time you've done this is it but you've taking a close off the chair say Tell me about what you've done the past the 1st year we all grouped together and there was a different theme for each month and we made a calendar which was a place thing yes lots of strategically placed things so this year then it's different because you've years expanded shall I say cards and different Tell us about that was all the fun and we did them in and we did in some unusual places as well Ok tell us about one was in a failed with the moonshine in for the Christmas car Ok and then myself and. Jenny and the other lady called Karen we did one in the shop so the store that we're satin now because I should explain we're all sitting in wimple stores now so you've all got your kids often here yeah. Well. Now that initial moment when you think it's a good idea in theory but now I'm standing here with my friends I'm going to have set my clothes off what's that like no we we did enjoy it it was it was great fun and the fact that we were doing it for charity was good we made friends that we didn't know before I mean it's a quick wait to get to know somebody isn't it if you're in you're thrown in that position in that situation could be really careful words stuff. But it's really good for body confidence as well isn't it it is indeed and I think it's important that we get the message across there. I got involved because I was when you come into the village. You just join the team you take clothes off just so you close off and get to know people. Really well. So yeah I think that the 2 the charity that we're doing for breast cancer now and embrace is very important that we get the messages across on both of those are pretty say that every woman in the village has been affected in some way by breast cancer whether it's ourselves or friends or relatives and I know it's a charity close to a lot of our hearts and then we also wanted to try and dispel this belief that everybody's body should look the same there's a perfect way to have a body and actually there's a lot of women in this village who are very healthy and strong and live active lives and don't have the idealistic body shape and we just want to show some diversity so we are raising money this year for breast cancer now and to support a film that the body image movement trying to make in Australia for embrace kids so we can take it on to our schools primarily 9 to 14 year olds we're just trying to create a more diverse representation of a woman's body where shown perfect images of what we should look like more and more and way Yeah absolutely and I work at the sharp end to my purse work as an eating disorder therapist so I do work at a shop and but actually when I talk to neighbors and friends and colleagues I realize that actually is an issue that's affecting everybody and it can have such a detrimental effect to tell me about the age ranges in the group well I think the youngest member is 18 and the oldest member I think is over 70. Percent increase so when I mean we don't think. That we can get all of the wrapping paper in the gift cards and show our support can't win the wimple stalls in wimples stores and also if anybody wants to Facebook you can go on the wonders of Wimpole and there's a link to our online shop and otherwise you know Google your finder so you find us and get in contact with more than have to send you some are brilliant ladies. I'll just make sure next time I'm in when for. Need to go into the stores there are make sure the blinds are open. To do so scored sparks with you on b.b.c. Radio Devon morning the time exactly 838. B.c. Maybe a Devon travel news I got a few things to tell you about this morning the m 5 northbound around that sort of very busy the traffic this morning. Around rockets and heading towards actually the traffic slow moving actually mail there was an earlier accident Bolen's have reopened just the queues as that source itself coming from the I $35.00 near the junction of the b 3261 report of an accident that accident have a treat for street partially blocked that usual accident between which had lain. On the a 376 from a very heavy traffic heading towards close and George the $39.00 between but a for the bonds a little slow traffic there in both directions what is one accident report the Smalling on the trains of every Jew service on cross-country I'm going to mention Dawlish This is between Exodus and Davidson Newton Abbot Jiu-Jitsu the weather conditions along the Dawlish sea wall or lines opening clear all the time are Bridge 3 ferries running between Davenport I'm told point maximum white at the moment is 10 minutes if you have a trouble story we're not talking about you can call the free travel line it's 080-081-2820. So that child. Kevin Thomas. Massive clue what the weather is like this morning if we didn't already know yeah I mean just only because this morning getting out of bed you realize that there's been some rain again overnight still raining in fact cross fit quite a few parts of Devon this morning very cloudy grey murky start to the day as well things will improve as far as that goes a little but the winds will be strong it will be a blustery day and that's because there's an area of low pressure formally the rebellions of x. Tropical storm Sebastien lying off Southwest island of its 24 hours it will come a lot closer to the north Devon coast in fact by tomorrow morning just off the coast and then moving across southern England into the North Sea by the end of tomorrow now as it does so then it will get a spells of quite heavy rain and some strong winds as well could see some gales developing today in fact from the southwest gusts in excess of 50 miles an hour perhaps around exposed parts of the coast and also the rain will gradually ease away this morning it will be replaced by much thinner cloud a break as well at times giving some sunshine but there will also be a scattering of showers and wanted to these could be quite heavy it's going to be mild though 10 to 14 degrees range maximum temperatures today and tonight cloud again increasing as the low comes ever closer heavy showers becoming more frequent longer spells of rain develop developing from midnight on Woods and wins although moderate or fresh from the southwest are going to strengthen again by tomorrow morning the minimum temperature no less than 6 degrees tomorrow the heavy Sherry rates around the morning that'll ease there will be further heavy blustery showers though through the day a little brightness at times and it's going to be windy with fresh the strong western northwesterly winds again reaching out to Galle perhaps even severe go force around parts of the coast while the maximum temperature a little lower than today at 12 Celsius sorry outbreaks of rain overnight into Thursday and through Thursday itself as well some brighter sunny periods developing winds easing though and on Friday dry. Brighter with some sunny periods although. Increase overnight into Saturday this looks as though it looks Those another overpressure just nudging toward Southwest England some data on how far it will come the but it does look as though outbreaks of rain to be pushing back in from the southwest during Saturday before returning again of March into Sunday and the winds at the same time picking up on Saturday becoming easterly and quite strong and with those easterly winds slightly colder temperatures as well the maximum on 1st o.-p. 11 degrees but by Saturday then between 4 and 8 to raise so noticeably colder as we go into Saturday that's where the. Getting one that way also been talking about the films you love watching over and over again I said earlier I don't watch films but a lot of people especially with Christmas coming up on Christmas what's the same firms over and over every year they watch the same film and I know for a lot of people Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without the Wizard of Oz I get that but with other films general films you know who did the murder or you know they got married in the end. But why watch the same film Mero says cvs seen many films more than once especially musicals Ok the rain scene with Gene Kelly are famous one isn't it singing in the right I'd likely say not a 100 times really wow a 100 times Jill says she never gets tired of watching Camelot Safehaven and was in the balls over and over again David enjoys watching films over and again especially the excellent ones his wife Kathy though thinks it's strange that I know the ending and still enjoy the film he says. Over No the act Christmas because it is just such a wonderful message and I like Love Actually we were having a discussion outside because the guys out there aren't sure about Love Actually But I actually actually actually think it's a great film and it's got some wonderful actors in it and it's fun and it's romantic and it's moving in our money and he's got a brilliant nativity scene I mean what more could you want and you can guarantee the least one of the channels will have was a levels Oh yeah over the festive period definitely that you know a bit Chitty Chitty Bang Bang will go to be there got to be that.
