B.b.c. Radio Devon z.z. Topical to members of the z. Top just walked in here at the moment gentlemen good afternoon Steve calling. What a fantastic bass baritone voice that has thank you very much I'm guessing. On a bit of beer. The rumble they call me this morning at the Rumble you could do threatening you could do threatening phone calls or the Salvation Army could shall we just listen to these gentleman actually singing Have a listen to this whole away. Now when I was a little me mother always told me quote unquote a job that if I didn't kiss the gun it was me let's go mode oh well over a go oh where oh where the hole where you get home where a home a little over a job oh where oh oh oh I hope that somehow where a hole over a little hole where you show King Lear you was the king of France before the revolution when. A little oh hey Joe I wonder Gaudi's heart kind of when spot is going to do to show you Ok hold over hold a job oh we're both went whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa hey Joe Oh where oh oh oh whoa whoa whoa whoa the way Oh Ok oh a goat Well once I hound of Plymouth gal and she was taught to. Well I owe a lot of weight you know. Where all of a round of honor if you know. Where I am although I am of the old adage of. The air and I am out of the area of low hatred. Oh I hope I am not where I am or the were earlier in the where it was. 2 of those magnificent voices here Kevin and Steve and how many were singing on that one was alluding to was there for 12 full 12 and full acapella full acapella any idea where that song came from traditional I mean I love that there was a traditional which means it's been lost to time yeah it's there's no actual date as to when that was 1st song but it would have been round about the sort of late 1990 s. All. That information's been lost it would have been handed down not well and to mouth only somebody sing it to someone else. Stand Hugo is sort of known as the father of Ashanti man and there's a book called The Song seventy's from the 7 Seas not a sort of the bible of the shanty world and stone Hugo went around and he collected a lot of these shanties from the captains on the cruise of the toll ships and stunt ugle was on board these sort of ships at the end of their life spans of in the early 1906 it was. But he was used I think to actually get people to pull together to raise rigging raising because that sort of thing very much it set a rhythm that they could all work to by keeping that rhythm. You get the maximum force when everybody works at the same time servers the rationale for doing that the other reason clearly was around so improve morale of the of the group and the songs got sung in relative leisure time as we call it relative because they're obviously doing other jobs at the same time but not necessarily rowing and you would have heard these on the big the big square riggers you know without a doubt. You had the work songs so you had different speeds and different lengths depending on whether it was holding up the sheets which is the the sales the higher the the bigger the sheet the sail the longer. The shanty would be you had different ones for doing pump pumping the buildout that could happen but that shanty could last the whole of the voyage if you had a leaky ship and then of course you also had ones around the capstan for raising the anchor and that would end up with being 3 different speeds because your 1st of all pulling the ship through the water to be above the anchor then you've got a different one to try and drag the anchor out of the mud and as the anchor gets closer to the ship that the chain gets shorter it gets lighter so you can speed up so you had different rhythms and that is with a traditional shanties you still get people singing them in the traditional male manner at that speed but you'll find a lot of new crews now will be. Making them more lively and better for entertainment changing the tempo without a doubt and the other thing that seems to be happening very much in the last 5 years groups are starting to write their own songs and set their own stories to music in the same genre but essentially to celebrate other maritime traditions or or local stories in particular some of our group write stories of local local to him. Which is rather fun and the locals engage with us as a result much more in readily Well you've got a festival now coming up yes coming up all started starts tomorrow we have early start with maritime experiences. Which are demonstrations around the town and certain venues which are demonstrations of sale making. Lobster Pot making out to Willow got some figurehead carving and some discussions around. The recent book about Pike Ward Katherine Finley is going to give us a presentation on that which is fantastic So lots going on in that space all that begins at 11 o'clock on Saturday. There's a quasar official opening at midday with all the groups gathering on the key at the back Nuki after that singing will start at 1 o'clock $1.00 to $6.00 venues around but no $1.00 to $6.00 and then 7 until 11 in many venues throughout Timothy and showdown and then again on Sunday one and 2 of 6 singing will start at 1 o'clock drinking at 5 minutes past the hour just before probably. By quarter we should remind people haven't heard of him the man who revolutionized Iceland was an economy the best known man in Iceland. Radio Devon and b.b.c. Covered. The other week with the unveiling of the plaque on sea wall walking 10 months and one of our shanty croon in the gig wrote the new shanty best known man in Iceland sung life incredible and amazing history the man who just looked at the industry there and they and the style and but is he still as famous in Iceland as he was more famous I think he is over here the discovery of the book brought in 2003 of these diaries that which gave birth to the book in 2016. Identify very clearly the relationship between. Part ward and the Icelandic people and the benefits he brought to the Icelandic people in terms of marrying the needs of the u.k. With the supply if you like of fish from Iceland and they're very very grateful there's a big exhibition in the capital at the moment going on going and one of our members of the Heritage Museum went out to visit it and came back raving about it saying very very please that that links been made look a bit we can't let you go could you just sing a little live for us I don't know if you can do that without your Hang on how many would be 9 other people you know me sing with yeah absolutely just the 2 of us just a service yes if you do something absolutely. We're screwing. Them store. No hold on the stall unsure. Or insurer. But. Ensure their own 0. 0. 00. 000-000-0000 extension 0. 0. 0. 000-000-0000 extension 000 stolen sure. Brilliant and. Unrehearsed straight in there that must be actually quite a strain on your voices on definitely not definitely not no we certainly need live a case of the way through actually get a glass of water that's it. The last verse actually on that one this is normally 4 verses to sugar in the hold a lot of Shanti crew sing those 4 verses but a lot of crews will actually add an extra bonus and that last that we sang at the end there is one that we wrote and it was a. Mosaic on the floor in real sparking sinless which I saw during a dog walk and thought that would actually fit in with the the tune unbeknownst to me it was one of our shanty crews sons that was involved with actually putting that together so not much nice little sort of twist day plans in gentlemen look thank you so much indeed we got a. Just one more song to come up Cole boat what's the history behind this right that is about the town that was a ship carrying coal. Heading for France from Wales but it was during the early parts of the 1st World War where the ships had to stay close to shore to avoid the submarines and unfortunately collided with a French freighter and the return went down and it's now known as one of the best fishing spots for bass off move off of Timothy and Bob came across this one Bob freshwater one of the shanty crew and wrote this. You know it is like to take the opportunity if I may to thank all of our supporters for the things Shanti festival is overwhelming the goodwill in our towns and also the particularly the nearly 100 volunteers making this festival work without them we couldn't do this so it's a very big thank you from all of the committee who make this happen to those volunteers to our venues to our performers and to breweries and all that whom are very generous and able this to to go ahead tomorrow what time well make sure that you are there by midday if not before. Thank you gentleman thank you his. 2 you. Had out a guy. That. Was the hands of. The most of the day because now he's safe. Route 1000 tons of. 2000 tons of. C.c. . Game. Closed down and sounds the whole host of. The beast on this bill goes on to say the cause how he saved the. 1000 tonnes of the. 2000 tons of. Around the country. From the. Crunching sound to the group. SCIRI get a job. Because he's done this. Because now you say a. Few 1000. 2000 tons of gold. To support. The ship. Every bath you apologize thank you very much gentlemen thank you very much indeed the shanty crew are leaving it's b.b.c. Radio Devon Still to come we're going to be at the go from country club is working lunch we're also marking the 70th birthday of Bruce Springsteen he is off to some has been all this week about the strike it's just a. Great. Time. Spoiling things a. Bowl. You know when you. Go to. Place a. Long. Way so. With. The. Kids. You come. But it's tricky because the big crowd. Is all you can. Well the heads up on the license plate thing. I read. This week see. He's got a sense of. Being a. Slave. Right. With the sub. Sub sleeping. The footpath his. Operation. There as well. Between. Running between. The. 120. I'm Chris Jones I'm the general manager Rex tickle the country club we're outside the building at the moment which I didn't realize has got a name it's a house yeah this is where park was known as warehouse but we refer to where park you know anything about the history in this it was built in the 14 hundreds and then in the 1800s so John Duckworth was the resident here and it passed through the Spicer family to him he died in I think 817 and yet the state's history is a fantastic building it is a beautiful building that's very much a 250 year old facia They're absolutely beautiful it is now owned by whom it's now owned by us actually go from country club so it's part of our state by the members by the members that's right it's a private members club so they'll become shareholders and it's it's all part of what they can use when they become members or having lived over there the 2 pine trees in front of us got to be the same age as the House yes they're Monterey pines stunning looking trees a little bit brittle in places hence why we don't advise you to walk under those 2 but they're scattered all around the course they're fabulous trees you've tried to keep the lay of the land and it's very flat here but you try to keep it without adjusting things for the world of golf yes we have the golf course wraps around the building but then everything else is within you you can't see it from the road you drive up between 2 houses and you kind of opens up a bit like a Tardis really you don't expect it to be here when you come up the drive it's much bigger than you think what your role here when you say your general manager everything everything yes health and safety finance customer service food and beverage drains block drains and light bulbs wine lists you name it I mean I used to be a hotel Yes it's pretty much this is like a hotel but without any bedrooms that's the way I look at it it's we have everything else so you're here to serve you're on call 24 hours or something goes wrong pretty much yes yeah and things occasionally do go wrong not all the time but it's about how you overcome and have a great say mess isn't difficult we can usually cope with most things when you know . School this was it catering management pretty much I left school wanted to be a chef and started to trying to be a chef and then decided I preferred front of house I think I wanted to own my own restaurant and my careers adviser suggested you should do a management course so I did My went off and I did I did a day in neat college in South Wales and then I came down to South Devon college the old South Devon college and did a hotel manager in south Devon Plymouth they've got some great courses there they've turned out some fantastic chefs and staff for the restaurant Absolutely I work with some great ones here and still connected to all the people I've worked seed in the city in this industry some wonderful injuries it's not like it used to be you know the hours aren't as bad as people make out it is a good industry and you know our hope that you know more people want to be working front of house or kitchen but here it's not just that you know we have P.C.'s we've got coaches we've got spire managers we've got gardeners green keepers every you can imagine every job you can imagine here how many people with few 13130 staff it yeah it's 8 so it takes a lot of people to keep this place looking like it does and a lot of people to keep serving the customers because one day you'll have a handful of people here next day we've got 100 c.e.o. We love the members we'll have an event a conference wake person in you know anything can be happening and you've just won awards and I heard it on b.b.c. Radio breakfast show we did yes we were lucky enough we won the most welcome in golf club up at the golf Awards in London so I took a few of us up there and we were out of we had a table with our golf carts in here and it was just a great night really really good down Walker was hosting and we had a fabulous night so yeah a few glasses of face afterwards and we not stop milking it since and that was back in March. Good for you I mean if you get you get an award like that and celebrate it what for the future how are you going to build on this we've got lots happening in the future and we've got some planning permission going in very soon for a big development here which is going to improve a lot of our sports sections so indoor tennis court. It's a show. Then we're going to. Be inside areas and changing rooms so a 3 to 5 year plan but something is definitely keeping everyone here very very interested whether you're a member of remember it's very exciting times. Today. I mean I'm assuming you do get. My desk but I'm a big fan of music I'm a big fan but I think going to go with Really just 10 sharp they were they were a Dutch band who had that hit in 1901 and as far as I'm aware and this is a little bit of education because it was Christians that chose the track and I just suddenly have to look them up I don't think they had any other hits in this country certainly in Holland and in mainland Europe but nothing in Great Britain thank you to all the team at the exit Golf and Country Club making me so welcome Monday we're going up a ladder with 2 ladies spotted in paint. Also things of course like teenage break ups which can cause great emotional trauma in the family how do you deal with those and the new series of Dr Martin is back on our screens yes I do admit it is a guilty pleasure of mine now all sort of impact can something like a t.v. Or meet the people behind this particular adaptation of Dracula who not only want to take your blood but they want you to donate blood as part of the audience and will find out exactly why it's all for a good cause no vampires involved. Exit in or coffee at are going to take wickets take the Libby pones which is coming up there was a book it's been adapted into a stage play and swimmers were going to meet a couple of swimmers who've taken on a bit of a challenge over the next 10 weeks 2 of them will be in the studio whether they're in their bathing suits or not I don't know when this temperature but we're hoping to chart their progress and of course we've got your plan to decorate as on that's the working lunch I literally was driving up Mowbray hill and there were a couple of ladies up the ladder doing an excellent job not only to the brickwork but to the vanished cells of a butcher's So I just you know I'm like those programs that we do in an. Dungarees will catch up with. Monday at around about $1230.00 should we sniff the blossom. The to. The top the. Up the tail. On. Truly remarkable.
