Radio call more on a writer right 10139. B.b.c. Radio Cornwall. Mel Osborne Good evening how has Friday the 13th been for you not as good as it has been for Boris Johnson. He's let the Conservatives 2000 most decisive victory since the Margaret fat she is lots more on that a coming up in the next hour as you'd imagine we will take a trip around the county. Take in all the winners also take a look at what went wrong for the losers and how to do that we're going to be joined by a professor of politics from Exeter University if you've had enough of politics that don't worry we've got a festive game of guess who coming up in the 2nd hour and lots of great music. This . Led. Lead. . Lundy kicking things off for us this evening here on b.b.c. Radio and that seems entirely appropriate really because the results are in and Boris Johnson is back in Downing Street the conservatives have their most decisive general election victory for more than 30 years so the Tories have now got 365 seats that's a majority of 80 which gives the prime minister the or 30 to deliver Breck set many of the new M.P.'s there are in traditional Labor heartlands and speaking in Downing Street earlier the prime minister thanks to those voters who backed his party for the 1st time in all those who voted for us for the 1st time those whose pencils may have wavered over the ballot and you heard the voices of their parents and their grandparents whispering anxiously in their ears I say thank you for the trust you have placed in us and in me and we will work round the clock to repay your trust and to deliver on your priorities with a parliament that works for you. Labor ended up with $203.00 M.P.'s which is their worst showing in more than 80 years and a net loss of $59.00 seats it was their 4th successive general election defeat and the 2nd under Jeremy Corbyn who will now stand down although not yet I was elected to lead the party I think the responsible thing to do is not to walk away from the whole thing and I won't do that I will stay here until there has been somebody elected to succeed me and then I will step down at that point the Liberal Democrats the most pro European of the main parties finished with just 11 seats one fewer than at the last election among the casualties was the leader Jo Swinson just 5 months after taking the job obviously it hasn't worked and I like you I'm devastated by that but I don't regret trying. It is a huge job to be done so I won't be your leader I will be walking alongside the backseat party finished with no M.P.'s But leader Nigel for Asha's he's relieved Boris Johnson can now take the u.k. Out of the European Union at the end of next month and he can stop being a year I went pay we are going to leave the European Union now and about was like a 2nd referendum is going to have a lively is about well I haven't decided what I would have there but I will be relatively willing Proteas about the last part of your. M.P.'s will now return to Westminster next week the State Opening of Parliament takes place next Thursday with the legislation enacting Bracks it's coming before the Commons this time next week so that's the national picture here in Comal we have stayed true blue so here's a roundup of the results across the county starting in South East Como where Cheryl Murray extended her already thumping majority to a massive 20971 I'm really only meant that the constituency that I was born and raised in has returned to me for the 4th time as a member of parliament it shows that people have faith in our prime minister Boris Johnson and one job to do no that's to return to Westminster next week get behind the prime minister get bricks it done so that we can move the country forward George. His. Party 26764. I like. That. I. Never be complacent in this seat because I had a 66 majority in 20. 17 times and in 2015 it went down 215-2017 I back up it remains a volatile seats and tonight happens to be a very good result but I'm very very conscious that lots of people voted for me today who in some cases lifelong Labor voters and they voted for me because they wanted an end to the brick saga and they wanted it to live it and sort it and scold Leslie and so the party such a size $600.00. Thank you and I do here Monday let's go let's remind this Julie lectures thank you very vindictive this evening for supporting the bricks referendum and for very sincerely and for supporting Boris Johnson from my point of view I think that the people of North have their say again and it's time for us to get on with delivering bricks in January moving the country forward Thank you very much and thank you McCurry Sherrilyn the Conservative Party candidate 27237. And I do hereby declare that Charlotte McCurry is Judy elected as the Member of Parliament for the true parliamentary constituency. I'm very grateful for the Dean campaign we've had to call I think it's not been the same in other parts of the country and I'm really grateful that the discourse in turn has been really really like people in the doors we haven't had anybody say anything awful and I think people have just got out silently put their cross where they want 6 k. And given us a clear message where we want to take the country and will even then you know the conservative party candidate thank you 1773 yes. 6 and I knew him I declare that Stephen. Is duly elected Member of Parliament for this is also. Well a new key constituency. We will leave in January fortunes is made up for a cable that would rule that through we will leave at the end of January and that changes the conversation because no longer will Parliament be able to debate about whether or not we're going to if we will and that we can then all move on and yes talk about the future relationship Thomas Eric Holder said candidate 25000. And I did here by. Derek Morgan Thomas is Julian that to as a member of parliament but this inside constituency. I would say is that for BRICs it but also to just deal with the deadlock in parliaments enlargement so if there is a personal vote and certainly as I was about there people are voting for me or they didn't necessary like any of the leaders of the parties like that come across a lot Derrick Thomas the newly elected since our lives m.p. The other of course he has served a couple of terms already not full terms their way maybe he'll get to do that this time and in that round up of the all the different M.P.'s that have been elected around Comal today. The b.b.c. Radio getting you home with news travel and weather every 15 minutes it's 16 minutes past 5 the headlines Boris Johnson said the conservatives now have an overwhelming mandate from the general election to deliver Bracks it by the 31st of January Labor ended up with 203 common seats losing 59 many of them in northern England the Midlands and Wales form a stronghold for the party all a 6 M.P.'s in a coma have remained conservative all with an increased majority now it's the weather causing problems for the election today delayed the result in some eyes you can hear more about that coming up in a few minutes time but I think we probably need to find out what the weather has in store for. This weekend now Cornwall's weather. And Emily Wood joins us now to tell us what is in store Good evening Emily. Good evening it is more of the same really for this weekend strong winds to watch out for particularly some strong winds say no to all of the wet weather as well but it's not all doom and gloom there is some sunshine and some dry weather in the forecast well at the moment though across Coolmore the can pretty wet this band of rain is moving through quite quickly so some clear skies and push into western parts of Como However it will be followed on by some showers I have a nice the forecast for the rest of tonight is this band of rain clearing to the East followed by some likely have a shower system draw influence in there as well but it will remain quite windy through tonight so the winds from the Southwest could gust over 50 miles an hour at times particularly strong gusts that likely are on the coast and temperatures down to between 4 and 7 degrees so not getting to your presence through the night with the strength of that wind as well for tomorrow morning will be some clouds and if you have a shower still around the 1st thing on Saturday but they should clear through and then in fact the afternoon particularly volatile at some dry and some sunny weather for a time but it is going to be very windy we're still looking at gusts of around 40 to 50 miles an hour again particularly around the coast so just a quick look at the surf or cast tomorrow but looking at some stormy conditions 10 foot plus wages for the North Coast $69.00 foot waves the south coast the high tide times tomorrow quite important to take note of particularly for the north coast are off you for the let's out for the high tide in the morning is that at 626 the next high tide tomorrow is 850 at Falmouth that the high tide is at 6 23 in the morning then again it 1845 because the water is forecast at more or has the wind from the west or southwest at a 46 to go forth 8 increasing speed again it is a big airline at times with some school showers at it same as moderate or good occasionally poor visibility and temperatures tomorrow at $310.00 degrees in film with them panned out. I think it will fare much cooler than that out in about with the strength of that wind into Sunday we're looking at more of the same so it's going to be some heavy showers around and it's still going to be very windy as well we're looking at particular strong winds on Sunday afternoon we could get go through around 50 possibly close to 60 miles an hour again around parts of the coast that definitely is having to take note of but again the beast and dry and some sunny weather to go with highs on Sunday of between 8 and 10 degrees at least on Monday we're looking at some calmer comic conditions in terms of the wind strength there will be some sunshine a further rain at times looking likely for next week and that's the weather thank you very much Emily Hello and welcome to Truro cathedral coming up this Christmas Eve your chance to enjoy the b.b.c. Radio coop Christmas service from Truro because the. Full sense does music and your favorite b.b.c. Radio call me presenting I learned about life in the snowbound it's Ok if you're a little bottom heavy give the b.b.c. Radio comedy Christmas service this Christmas Eve from 6 pm. Not too long to go now it is at 20 past 5 you are listening to metals born on b.b.c. Radio com It is of course a general election results day we're very lucky to be joined this evening by Dan Stevens who is a professor of politics at the exits University although your base to the Penryn campus on a Ok So were you surprised by the result today I was a little surprised I think the majority of because of his have ended up with was at the the upper limit of what the polls were suggesting although the the vote shows were about what the polls were saying when they try to translate that the seats were being told maybe 20 maybe 40 c. Majority rather than 80 seats Ok any idea I mean we'll talk more about this in more depth as we go through the program but any idea what it was that swung it so so soundly for the Tories what is. Seems that the you know the issue. Was the really just the decisive factor certainly you know if we look at change in the vote where the leave was strongest is where the conservatives gained the most where they remain vote strongest she lost some vote share but for labor they did they did poorly with both sets of voters in both kinds of areas and so it does seem there was also a lead a factor in what happened and basically in the campaign beyond the leaders I think Labor tried very hard to make the election about something else they realized that perhaps it wasn't working for them and so. You know the n.h.s. Was their big issue and if they could have if they could prime the n.h.s. In voters' minds and make that the most important issue. You know maybe things wouldn't turn out so badly they could even afford coalition but it just doesn't seem to have happened now it doesn't we'll talk a little bit more about what went wrong for later shortly better it was a bit of a case where you have Comal doing it directly today because the gale force winds more than forecast now have a way they forced a delay in the cab of this ice constituency which meant it was the last in the country to declare by you some way the results did come in eventually shortly before 3 o'clock this afternoon and it was another Turi when with Derrick Thomas increasing his majority by around 4000 Speaking afterwards he says it's a real honor this is a place where I grew up this is my home and it's just so touching it means the sense about it but sentimental but it's really rewarding to have people come up to confirm their put their trust and confidence in me to do what I can for the area an area that I love and embrace my family and so it's a real honor and 3rd time in a row again same. Candidate who is well known he had a track record as an m.p. Here say so I thought Phil that is worth and work in and that we got our result but was it a vote for you because as you say Andrew George he's got a big person vote you've got a big puzzle because you knocked on many doors you both established that in this intelligence agency altered a vote for you on a vote for bricks. I would say is that for Brits it but also to just deal with the deadlock in parliaments enlargement so if there is a personal vote and certainly as I was about there people are voting for me although they didn't necessarily like any of the leaders of the parties I could that came across a lot but I think there are people that lend me their vote I'm not going to like Doesn't that worry you they didn't like your leader that means they didn't like Origins when I was going to university Popper I don't think any promise to ever has been and so I think every m.p. Will have a person about there that is not about the party politics but about the individual how they work for the area to unite Boris Johnson I think he's x. And I are be really honest I didn't support him he knows I didn't support him in the in the recent contest but he's just surpassed all my expectations is seizing the domestic agenda delivering some things that we were waiting a long time for we kept saying we were kept being told we can't isn't it we don't practice it well that's clearly not the case and he's managed to get a revised bill that I can support so so actually he is clearly the right leader for the Great Britain and Northern Ireland at this time that's Derrick Thomas then I remember talking to him during the conservative leadership elections and he really wasn't a fan of John's that he didn't support him as he just said but Terry Boris has won him around do you think Boris will have that effect or has had that effect on other voters leading to the results today I certainly think he was a he was less of a you know a white on the conservatives the May be we thought he would be even though there were these issues of trust in the end they didn't seem to need didn't seem to matter nearly as much as perhaps we thought but it's also just possible that he got he got lucky in that you know there was a comparison between leaders and and of course he for labor perceptions of Jeremy Corbyn as we know were historically poor and so some of the weaknesses of Boris Johnson trust his his lack of course but detail at times these kinds of things some of some of his. Historical mistakes and so on in the end didn't really seem to matter Ok it's interesting Lander George of course used to be the m.p. For the sometimes constituency until 2015 I think he contested it again this time but didn't quite get enough votes in the end and he said to us that actually today's result didn't come as a huge surprise to him we realised during during the campaign itself that there were forces which are of simply beyond our control people who are saying Look Andrew I'd like to support you and indeed I do support you but we need to get the b. Word done. Whilst I am I I understand and I you know I think that I think that Dominic coming soon is running the country at the moment he's got his mouthpiece and in Boris Johnson couched the campaign very cleverly and generated a kind of fear amongst people that somehow if they didn't vote this particular way then we wouldn't even get beyond beyond the b. Word beyond beyond breaks it itself it did it did I think spook people into into believing that this was simply a quick and dirty general election almost like a referendum without considering the you know the longer term consequences for health education climate housing and so on which were all you mentioned your speech which you worry about the future isn't the fact though the Liberal Democrats they came in your leader Joseph and said next to him I'm the next prime minister you didn't even manage to hold on to her seat didn't you just fail to get your message across isn't it isn't it doesn't lie at the at the feet of the Liberal Democrats Well yes I mean I think we will no doubt undertake our own if you like review of the of the of the campaign nationally and you know full well I think the people in the constituency know full well that I was not in support of the approach which which the National Party took I thought it was ill judged although I have to say that just Winston speech after the declaration last night was was one of the most impressive that I've heard and perhaps we could have heard more of those. During the campaign itself but no we were we were fighting locally against seconds forces which were beyond our control and the worry for me is is that we're going to have 5 years of conservative control over a range of services and policies for which they their track record orders frankly appalling and I don't trust them to actually consider the best interests of those people who are concerned about our health service our education the climate housing and Sassoon many other issues the question you know I got to ask you know last 3 times in a row you know you won many times in a row as well to be the m.v.p. You know this is the end of you trying to be an m.p. Isn't it about time you said well actually now let's give it to somebody else. I'm not giving up campaigning you know what does that mean does that mean I can see you're always be campaigning because that's part of your nature doesn't mean you could give up trying to be the m.p. Person although I mean the fact is that after the last generation the generation before that I made it quite clear that. You know I would not give up campaigning I was born and brought up here I live and die here I care about this place I will never walk away from it I will always do my best for it and if if come a general election you know there's of there's a there's an opinion that people would like me to stand and if I'm in a position to be able to stand then then yes I will always keep those options open so inside not closing any options whatsoever moment Andrew George there talking to b.b.c. Radio Denis Nightingale he listening to Melbourne on b.b.c. Radio we are joined by Professor Stephen professor of politics from Eckstein a vasty based here in Comal. 100 George that describe it as a quick and dirty general election do you think vote is treated it more as a referendum on Bracks set yes it does it does seem that way that was the key issue the Conservative slogan it seems to have been you know so effective was get it done and as we said that c.e.o. The leave remain divided really does seem to have dominated this election so it was like a like a referendum but you know if you're depending on which side you're on you know that's going to determine how happy you are with the outcome because unlike a referendum this their system is Thomas the 1st past the post system so as has been pointed out if you just take you know if you accrue calculation insight believe remains are it's you know in the votes for the parties that support you know the one the country remains split down the middle but this was an election and so you could have an 80 majority we interpret as being you know a real mandate as you've said the biggest majority. For over 30 years and so now you know they go ahead and fulfill their promise presumably to withdraw from the. Just before we head into the nice sport and travel at half past what you think went wrong Swinson because it really went badly wrong headed net it did I think it was and in some ways it wasn't too dissimilar to that the last election were to fire on your lip the Liberal Democrats are a difficult place and they have been ever since the coalition and so they need you know they seem to think they need policies that are are quite dramatic are going to get people thinking come back to their side so this time it you know it being the simple That's revoke It's call 50 policy initially but then they started to say to backtrack and say if we get majority which we know we want Sorry that was a little strange what went wrong after that then I think their vote got squeezed. By this whole leave remain divide and so they were whereas labor and the lip Dems were splitting the remaining vote somewhat the conservatives really got you know the lion's share of the lever and so. That accounts for some of the M.P.'s like Tom break for Joyce went to the surf of course a whole other set of circumstances in Scotland with the s.n.p. . And you know she just wasn't able to be there and defend that So yes perhaps she my of light and the professor Dan Stevens from Xtina vasty We will talk more to him in a few minutes time. Cornwell's radio station on your radio not speak out and on b.b.c. . See radio Cornwall. 31 I'm Martha Dixon But 1st Johnson has said he hopes his party's extraordinary election win will bring close. To the bricks it debate and let the healing begin the Tories have won a Commons majority of 80 the party's largest since 1987 Jeremy Corbyn says he did everything he could to get labor into power and will not walk away until another leader is elected the Labor leader said the election which saw the conservatives sweep aside his party and its traditional heartlands was taken over by bricks it all 6 of Kormos M.P.'s remain conservative all with increased majorities sometimes was the last seat in the u.k. To be counted off to bad weather delayed the odds of silly votes conservative Derrick Thomas increased his majority by 4000 votes income one and read through the Conservative m.p. George Eustice was voted back in with a new majority of more than 8000 Sherrilyn McCrory is the new conservative m.p. For Truro and found meth with an increased majority of over 5000 votes Cheryl Murray has retained her seat for the 4th time in Southeast Cornwall with a massive majority of 21000 Steve double retained his seat in new key and sent off still again increasing his majority to over 16000 votes and Scott man won his seat again in North Korea will with a majority of nearly 15000 votes. And looking at the weather in Cornwall tonight rain will clear but they'll still be some occasionally heavy showers it will become very windy again to the west the minimum temperature in Cornwall overnight his 5 degrees Celsius that's 41 fire in height looking at the times of the high tides it's just coming up to high tide in new key in around 15 minutes and 40 has a high tide at 25 past 6 tonight. Easy radio cool travel. On the a 30 heading westbound from college towns we've got some busy traffic at the moment day 39 at Collin cross recall the temporary lights there in place for telecoms work to laze can be expected in that area because some slow traffic on the a threat my West Heath Ave that's between Boundary Road barn lane and the a 390 learned every person so traffic there the saving of the temporary lights and ongoing road works no major problems reported at the airports or on the trains traffic's moving well on the same average around a 10 minute wait with all 3 ferries running between 2 point Devonport I'm stuck at this and if you call a travel story we're not talking about call b.b.c. Thank you good evening thank you very much for joining me quick at the business figures the Footsie 100 index at the close was up 79.97 at 7353.4 for the overnight tourist rates if you're going abroad you should expect to get 1.15 year owes to the pound $1.00 u.s. Dollars or $11.00 Swedish kronor that's our guest currency this evening well it's Friday the 13th but it is also election results day and up bars Johnson's pledging to heal the divisions of Breck's it off to getting the conservatives the best general election victory for more than 30 years if you haven't heard where have you been but are they got 365 seats they now have a majority of 80 so what is behind the conservatives victory today why did so many voters abandon Labor and the Lib Dems in favor of the Tories Manticora lives on the estate in Penzance families little if there have some of the lowest incomes in the county she's a low life long lived and Vita but this time around she voted conservative I think it's been a real shocker when one can have with this country said they want it but come on now. And then plain simple see we're going to do it with myself in a really. Difficult position because I've voted Lib Dem all my life. And I've had to change because I don't agree with what she says and I think she's willing to pull the rest of the Liberal Democrats say you or your life long lived and very true in this time you felt you really can do that you know I couldn't there was no way I could vote I couldn't vote for somebody that didn't want something that I thought was important to miss out on government cauldrons much the same and I think a want to get to just put it back to the people was the point people have already told you what they wanted and the only one percent that going to do what we want is voters don't know what choices were girl boy Johnson said this morning that he was aware that people he traditionally had voted Labor or liberal Democrat had lent the Conservative Party that face do you feel the I meant them you were very or do you think that you'll stick with them now you know I love you. This is purely I think a lot of experience outbreaks that people are sick of hearing about a skull that is death at the moment that I would stop making a fast nobody's going there while this is going to affect anyone to get done and you stayed up all night watching it and yes I have a follow up to 6 o'clock or so and but until this year for me so I've been able to say that is a been as far as I'm concerned they stand for you know since Maggie such a. That's that's quite something isn't it that Amanda says that this is the most important election for her in her lifetime she learned in feeling that. I'm a thing so I think that was that was something that was said quite a lot about the selection for various reasons primarily a game because approach and. The reason being you know on one side. You know they did it would be seen as being catastrophic for us to have a referendum you know get a result and then not on other results on the other side though if you think about what you know the way people like John Major Michael Heseltine all conservatives were framing this election here there was the most important in a generation because the consequences of leaving the year they argue will be catastrophic for the you know for the United Kingdom so you know from both sides this was an extremely important election why didn't. See it coming why didn't you know why was this today's results mornings without such a shock to them Do you think. Well that they didn't see it coming I think if we go back a bit because I think of what what happened in 2017 you know they had started from such a low point coping with their leader then as well bricks it was on the table then as well during the campaign they were able to turn things around with a you know a radical manifesto. People greet a light for me call him or over time and he was able to you know compared to the reason may rise in the polls and I think there was a sense there for that even though things look gloomy at the beginning saying kind of you know strategy was going to work. So they just didn't seem to see that this time and you know many people didn't this time it just wasn't going to work our way white in some of the reasons we've discussed principally being their position on bricks it was somewhat different this time and as as the lady there talked about a little Democrat said to I think those people hear this idea of being sick to death of pricks and so on you know all of this had occurred over the last couple of years and was much more of a sense of you know whether I support you know whether I supported things. Strongly in the 1st place. Let's get out of with a move on. 10 violate spent 30 years as a Labor Party member here in Comal he let the labor creep actually Comal Council but he quit the party last year because of concerns of anti-Semitism and what he referred to as a hard left and he says he's not surprised at all by last night's result. It's going wrong because people want a Labor party or a center left party to reflect normal law it's not to be ideological people it's a little things not just just spout. And make gestures and say things that are on real estate the last round for a long time they finally got hold of the policy that brought a lot of people in from the outside like give you a quick example along the plate since it always used to be the best obliquely Koskie support. These are the sorts of people have come in in call as well as elsewhere there's quite a lot of anti semitism in call in the Labor Party which is all folk. It just doesn't impress people and those. Are the thoughts of 10 and 20 that exam sure the the Labor Party in Comal reality that that isn't. Within the party here but is he right in principle that is the hard left is Colburn is part of the problem here is seems to be I mean I don't know that I saw the anti semitism certainly has been a problem and I think there's a problem isn't a problem in the campaign sort of distinguishing between. You know the. Person or the anyone. I think you know that corporate him self is rightist or anti semitic but that there is an semitism on the hard left and they haven't dealt with that story not down on it. But I you know whether or not the play was not speaking to people who lead normal lives I think is an interesting one because you know the manifesto arguably did a lot of the arts but but it may be that the communication of it wasn't adequate or and or you know things like the leadership the London based leadership these kinds of things I don't think it's that the policies were not trying to address the lives of ordinary people it is the way this is being being sold it seems to be in effect Well obviously not everybody thinks that it was down to Jeremy Corbyn that he got it wrong Have a listen to this days are the thoughts of the Labor candidate force and hostile a new key Felicity I think the conservatives play quite a dirty election campaign so that was very disappointing and I really like seeing the state in politics and I want to look want to stay in the media and I don't mean that the media I didn't actually do and I think I saw media a default was in this kind of I was not very pleasant I mean I'd like somebody so I could sit in the salon distance and actually I think I'm not acceptable and that's the sort of attacks I want to see see you quote you from some other you did you feel then that this is being one way or dishonest is that what you say. I think I think there was some dishonesty in the campaign and I think there is no cause for that in a country like this I should not be dishonest and they come like I clearly there was a sound stage all the way through you know I had to go back and you know those websites were that's not how to run a country like this and you know if that was some of the traditions that we can't trust them and then it becomes all right we don't trust any of the Texans when actually they wouldn't do it and it was they would have no such as I was so that is Philistia when he was the Labor candidate for Cent OS to Nikkei what you make of that detour is fight dirty. They were certainly not wrong that there was this information a misinformation out there and we know about it or we know about you know lots of it we know about the fake Twitter sites during the debates. And things like that and we know some of the exaggerations or so on that were being made by. Boris Johnson as leaders were pointed out often. The number of hospitals the number of nurses you know all these things I think we're we're we're being corrected What's interesting though is that they were they repeated and repeated and repeated so the this is like you know this is going on all over the world now particularly in America where we have this phenomenon and part of it seems to be to do with social media. We have the whole hospital story and the fight the fake correction in that case. You know it did used to be the case had think more that. When members of parties when candidates were discovered to be you know being loose with the truth and were corrected they wouldn't then just keep on repeating the same thing again and again I'm not sure that we know what kinds of effects. These things have in British elections in American elections it does seem that they impact a little bit on. The accuracy of people's perceptions it wouldn't be surprise if that was here and the other thing is was it was it mostly because it's just because as. You know we also had cases I think we have to point out particular the Liberal Democrats where. There was discomfort with the nature of their campaign mail and so on the graphs that were being you yes so I wouldn't I think it would be unfair to say it was just the conservatives it seems fairer to say that labor force a cleaner campaign I think. Finally I mean your sort of area of expertise is mass political behavior where do we go from here do you have any idea that's that's a really big question I know but so where do you go from here in terms of I mean I guess what's right to wait and see if the case of 1st elections you know we'll have another election we assume what because I was my work get rid of the fixed term parliaments parliament but let's say you know another election for 5 years. Labor and Liberal Democrats are now so far behind that it's very difficult to see that they could turn things around in a single election so in terms of. Mass behavior electoral outcomes I think we can anticipate quite a long period now of Conservative Government other things that interest people like me you know trust in politics will that change well that change if we not only with you or from the book we get a trade deal or we leave on the b.t.o. Terms at the end of the year. I I suspect no. But we wait and see maybe if you know because of his are able to deliver on those key promises we will see you know stick in people's trust in politics we will have to wait and see Thank you very much a professor Dan Stevens from x. Datuk a finder's on social media. Briefly let's go back to the election now and get some more local reaction if you've just joined us we've been sort of getting a flavor of what's happened here in Cornwall Florence MacDonald stood for the Liberal Democrats in the. Hambone Andris constituency where the incumbent Tory candidate George East is one with a majority more than $8000.00 votes and she says she may be exhausted but she doesn't believe that the Liberal Democrat approach was the wrong one a little bit tired but not too bad actually from somewhere sense of determination and optimism actually I'm Westpac coming from. And I think it's because we need it now more than ever. People who people a lot of people are hugely upset and hurt by what's happened and they need some hope and they need some positivity and a lot of people taking posted action whether that dating to a charity or joining our cause or joining a pathway for me our vote still went up and under the immense pressures for people to practically vote and either vote labor to keep out Tories or Tories keep our labor I think that's such a huge achievement. Why do you think it went so wrong for the Liberal Democrats to come I don't think it did go hugely wrong for the Libertarian Party I just think tactical voting was such a huge call this election people weren't didn't feel they could vote like they wanted to and I think the main issue that people were afraid of being stuck in a deadlock like we have had for 3 years if there was a hung parliament type a lot of us we wanted to stop a Tory majority but I can totally understand that people were kids and. We'd be going around the circle again and again and again maybe more elections and so that pushed people to vote for Tories to get that majority and when you look at the fact that they also basically did a deal with the Bracks the party to ensure they were the only ones standing. Who would in my words get breaks that I think I think it was almost inevitable do you know I think that there was a sense that some people just felt they couldn't vote for you even if they had voted Lib Dem before because of the revoke auto 50 policy for some people but it's definitely true but I think that the main reason that toll I've gone mountain campaigned and I've done 600 things in this election might have messages from so many people including labor supporters saying that I was exactly what they wanted a passionate confident but that couldn't vote for me and this is including that with an attachment that they couldn't vote for me because they want to get the Tories out of Labor has a better chance of that so it was tactical voting that really prevented people certainly in this constituency for voting for. Well Neil with Samoans the balancing illa fish and chip shop in sometimes Addie's pleased with Dettori majority he told our political reporter times in Melville that although he voted to remain in the Bronx a referendum today's result is the right one I'm very pleased actually because I think if you let me explain it to result in democracy. 3 years ago this country voted that they wanted to leave the e.u. I didn't necessarily agree with it to the decision at the time of the o.t. To remain but once the result was out I felt that we had to then see it through any party that wanted to go against our think we're going to commit political suicide and I think that's what's actually happened this time so do you think concerns inherent in our lives I do yes because the only party that we are committed to getting down to you so was it purely based on facts and then you will face you know not entirely I also didn't believe that Germany called and got what it takes to be a credible leader for you know the British people and as a small business I. Didn't have time to write what you think now this new government can defeat a well I've always been traditionally a conservative voter because I've always believed that they've got the best interests of the of the small business at heart. And I think I was quite fearful of the rising taxes with the Labor Party in particular a committee would say when I felt they could well damage the economy lonesome a lot of business has not liked the uncertainty because the practice is not something that you welcome absolutely all our customers come in here and there but the one overriding thing about Rex It is the uncertainty and the fact extract on for 3 years costs country must be millions of pounds of wasted time where we should be focusing on the things like getting your neck chest or to the eccentric tetra and people just fed up with it they want you to call to the committee to Bret's it and Boris was the only one the plainly stated that that was what he was going to do and you could only consult a tool about any of the impact subjects it may be on tourism or whatever it would be you know the effect of business. You know what I don't believe so I believe that we've now made up though that we have to go along with it. Because it will be making it look as we go along with it don't believe the hype it's going to be such that in the long to the British public I think it's strong enough to stop the fruit the actual force in order to do the best bridge that carries. Well we will find out that was Neil Whitten speaking to our political reporter Tamzin Melville Ok that's the 1st hour of the program done consider yourself up to date on election results day 2019 the next half of the program will be a politics free zone lots of music and we are going to play Guess who you can have the 1st clue on the other side of the news on a travel update. Most News at 6 I'm Martha Dixon Barra's Johnson has said he hopes the conservatives extraordinary election win will bring closure to the BRICs it debate and let the healing begin the Tories have won a majority of 80 the largest since Margaret Thatcher in 1987 the prime minister has promised the u.k. Will leave the e.u. By the end of January the former father of the house Ken Clarke was expelled from the parliamentary party for a Belling over pricks it he said Mr Johnson will now have fewer problems getting his deal through the House of Commons or is has gotten an amazing opportunity now he's got power for 5 years he can really immense amounts of discretion what he can do the Labor Party's in a serious crises which will take a year or 2 for resolve the Liberal Democrats have a right. Been through so bought from the problem big problem Scotland Boris is now quite clear to decide what he wants to do Labor has suffered its worst defeat since 1935 ending up with 203 M.P.'s the party's former minister Lord Plunket to schooled on Jeremy Corbyn to step down immediately and apologize it would really help if the clique that runs the Labor party at the moment said sorry they're so lacking in any Come try belief that they've made a mistake and I'm told one of them apologize to all those who lost their seats last night European leaders have cautiously welcomed to Mr Johnson victory but have warned it will be very challenging to finalise a price Breck's it deal by the end of next year. All 6 of core most M.P.'s remain conservative all with increased majorities sometimes with the last seat in the u.k. To be counted off to bad weather delayed the Isles of Scilly votes conservative Derrick Thomas increased his majority by $4000.00 fêtes he was asked if he thought it was his personality that people had voted for or the Conservative Party as a whole I would say is that for BRICs it but also to just deal with the deadlock in parliaments enlargement so if there is a personal vote and certainly as I was about there people are voting for me or they didn't necessarily like any of the leaders of the parties and you George of the liberal democrats who was previously the m.p. For sometimes came 2nd with just over 21000 votes we were fighting locally against seconds forces which were beyond our control and the worry for me is is that we're going to have 5 years of conservative control over a range of services and policies for which they are track record orders frankly appalling in Campbell in red treat conservative m.p. George Eustice was voted back in with a new majority of more than 8000 last time it was just over 1500 he said the Conservative win was all about bricks it to Cameron and rejoice constituency has always been something of a weathervane seat it tends to change hands on a change of government and if there's anything in the national mood it often comes out in the cameras and hail constituency and it is certainly what we were picking up on the doorstep was a large number of in some cases lifelong Labor voters who wanted to get Bracks it done Labor's pull Fama came 2nd in Cambodia read 3000 said he was disappointed with labor all Labor's overall performance but didn't want Jeremy Corbyn to resign I think that's very very bad news for Britain are going to have my own point of view and the view of our party here in Kabul. I think the strategy that I would commend would be to to. To get into the kind of involvement with community that we've established during the last couple of years during the course of this campaign and then actually we're up in community to actually build strength build support and also book community Sherrilyn McCrory is the new conservative m.p.
