B.b.c. Radio Cambridge. You with the residents say this is a show where different people groups and communities get to take over the airwaves and b.b.c. Radio came to tell their story. And this is my series Cup culture I'm introducing you to the party people colorful community and social state of Cambridge nightlife I created the idea not come 10 years ago as a price for women like me to go out and have fun and still be home in time for the baby sitter this is the story of have a cup and cup as a party for a decade in this episode of club culture. So we met. A few. More and I can tell except the weld say they don't need to do less but. Well I know we'll Ok with it a group of friends. And me is so sweet the younger. So which he. Did. Very well then. And not. And she said. What and the rest is history. It's the. Club. We used to read I mean. There was a real simplicity. Just really nice and the 3rd meaning of. What we've been talking about with lots of the public is that. She's. The star of star. Crossed Cambridge. From the residence. 'd with the residence a b.b.c. Radio and I'm. A fool. Before we meet some of the. Whole. Let me tell you more about me. My husband and I moved to Cambridge when I was pregnant with my son Joe 13 years ago Joey and his sister Grace his 14 Parkside school in the center of town a project that we had lived in although I was born and brought up on the island. London was a lot of fun for the years that we were there but in the end we wanted to slightly quite a knife and chose Cambridge as it was close to where Nick grew up in Snipes. I've always worked in events and marketing in some form or another from doing my placement year at Wembley Stadium and being lucky enough to see some of my heroes perform from Michael Jackson in Stevie Wonder to Della Sol to Dan running my own marketing agency in London hosting press events for dot com companies. I now run a local marketing consultancy helping small businesses and events company my little festival running festivals and events in Cambridge. When we moved to Cambridge that I wasn't working pregnant I'm with the talk left I'd reached an age when going to crops is a rarity and even the weddings that started to dry up the only time I ever got to daunce was at the 40th it wasn't like I've been a hardcore club. Simply love to let loose on the dance floor whether it be a family parties college. The ministry or the cross. But something about being in a new city with 2 young children I felt the need to go out. Perhaps a need to reconnect to someone I used to be I became a little obsessed with wanting to dance and if I had to choose on the radio that I loved I started to feel aggrieved that there was nowhere but my kitchen for me to go to daunce Why did cops have to start later the my babysitter would stay or I could stay awake why would clubs for the year. All of a sudden I was on a crusade. I started to mention the idea for an early cup to a few people. My husband thought I was mad as did some of my friends are you going to start a cub at your age what passed for that now won't wait. I happen to be working with Vicky Fenton Nick Welsh of the time it was a graphic designer doing some design work for Vicky children's clothes shop in the center of Cambridge at one marketing meeting I mention my idea for the clap they both instantly loved it we got excited. Could create a logo he could spread the word to other parents for the shop and sell tickets we started to realise this could actually work. And so it began for a beautiful start at the fountain pop on Regent Street where Blissett hit the center of town on the launch night to finding out how I'm on Rosecrans in 10 years ago. The early night club was born out of a real and true desire to want to go out dancing and it's grown into so much more. This is b.b.c. Radio Cambridge year there's always a track from a that I have to daunce to say if I'm out front talking to the bouncer Julie or if I'm in the loo basically how come running out and I'm there and at the very beginning I have to admit to a guilty pleasure which was actually s. Club 7 and even Nick Welsh d.j. At 1st very reluctantly played it but in the end he's come around and he thinks this is a classic track. They a. Grudge against. Us . Greg. Greg Allen. I'm Alex regime with you on b.b.c. Radio Cambridge and this is the residency the show that tells the stories of communities what defines a community is it and the creation of a shared interest over feel I don't think it can be any of by sings and in that any nightclub it's one of them. Community projects cry from enthusiasm from the energy and positivity of others and this is certainly true of the early night club my friends Vicki Fenton and Nick Welsh with the friends who would that the spark of this idea and helped it to grow. 10 years on it's time to reminisce with Vicki and look back at that time I'm just coming into Cambridge now walking on the street up to the market square and I'm coming to meet with my good friend. Well we started the night club 10 years ago with Nick Welch and she's become one of my closest friends so I am looking forward to seeing that stay I think. How you write we we need to buy a cake can help me Yes definitely so you've made a few cakes for as a video member did you have did you do some cupcakes plates cupcakes protect an image of me 107 percent and stuff like that and we did smiley faces on them but I think I actually forgot to give them out. Because I had seen about histories that go Yeah exactly right where could we get a cake from. Ok well as we're walking along looking for a cake I. Just want to reminisce about do you remember me 1st talking to you about the idea that you know yes I think we'd be in our tidal wave like one of our 1st ever nights out and we would fit by feeling a bit frustrated that we did it anyway it's going to the dogs we had a featuring a new moms we have here now for ages that they remember you can saying I had this idea to start a club that starts early basically so we can have a dance Yes and we were really probably. Right we found a mom it's not me. Who can be quite lonely that so very early stage of motherhood can't it yes and you feel like you have been out for ages and kind of want to reconnect with your fun self Yeah. I am and I think it's working with you as well and we were we mentioned it to him and he used to work at the junction so he thought it was a good idea and of course you had your shops we. So what was your role in the early days I just remember trying to get everybody into the idea when people tickets and tell people about it and there were some very excited and some people just didn't seem to get it it was quite a hard sell at 1st to get people to go it was mad it really was and we were doing it printed tickets and you could only get them from suites right yeah yeah so you had people coming in to buy tickets and some people get really excited about it but we didn't have the people at the 1st one to but it was definitely a hard sell and I remember saying that people were crossing the street to avoid me because I was. Over over the bomb so the school suddenly we were like you know it's come to this club a lot of the. You know. Yeah so it's quite amazing really 10 years later we set out and we don't have to chase people. You know the other I think the thing that happened with thousands of see our friendship grew stronger but also we did that we were doing these events together and now we also have another events company together yeah maybe it started that's cool off I think we realized that we were like really I like talking izing it and we've basically making our own fun I think that way we kind of covered. That concept will come if there's something in the city that we used to live in London and something that you happening I think you have a responsibility to make it happen we've done different events in a way I think it's not going that this thinking of something the thing you'd want to do and then realizing that other people want that so yeah no and I think I was reflecting on that that's really what we we we focusing on the last couple of years and I was an old are you. Involved nearly knocked up anymore it was reflecting on the fact that perhaps if we hadn't started a nightclub together and seen that be a success we wouldn't have had the courage to say well let's brainstorm this festival or let's do that yes like a windy into. Doing whatever we've ended up doing. And we still do you know the comments that we got with. The comments that we get about thank you so much for doing this my kids had such an amazing time and you know what was really nice is people saying it was women that organized it and that's quite unusual in the. Festival world was them saying you know if you really knew exactly what we wanted Yeah they could tell that. And I think that's the same with any of the events we do in the night. It's just kind of slightly. Different 5 different details Q Yeah. Yeah and I think often my man that got involved in organizing events nights out is because that d.j. Said it's a different reason for them doing it and it becomes all about the music rather than thinking right how can we make sure everyone has a really good time which is what we do yeah looking off to their every need having the starlight comes to your bed she spoke with some people face is she we have makeup in the news we have. Festivals that. Go just as well it's about the whole experience not just me say Oh you're right we've lost concentration and have not found any cake you might be going home to. I love to go out and. This is the residency club. The residency residency this is the residency. Part of a 4 week series where we. Cambridge you can catch up on the story so fall on the b.b.c. . B.b.c. . Radio Cambridge. We want. To have a real face about to. Celebrate the occasion. Of coming to. On the 10th anniversary night. And Jesse is. Going to taste the cocktail that we're going to. Celebrate tonight which what we're going to sound very much but. Just to make a little bit more special for the. I just tell you it's That's great yeah it's very free. Online very very safe it's not easy drinking it's. Easy it's always good. Let's get started so just talk us through what you're doing so 1st of all what I do they are very serious. And I like to. as. It's very. Very good so it's like a really refreshing for me. Is actually good for me because it is so well some of the most popular. Specifically a lot of wine. I know more now I. Love you very much and doesn't mention it and it hasn't been as I have been some. People. Everyone's has still kind of stuck to it even though it isn't. But it does change the. Old lady. Marian that is. Says it didn't salad basically. Trying not to egg yeah I'm. Glad to give it like a nice. Place Yeah profane. To say thanks to Larry thank you. I'll come down to today I miss the day of the 10th birthday party getting it ready this fairy lights everywhere wish it really pretty and I'm also here waiting for my very good friend and early night club number one fan chills to arrive and here. It is. How are you I'm really really good it got your coffee perfect thank you. So we met. Up a few years ago are now going to remember what I did I can tell exactly where you say you don't need to do the math but what I know well Ok with it a group of friends and we always meet each other we do different things for a birthdays and the she's so sweet the youngest one of our little grave she spots that type of thing so what would you like to do you feel 60th birthday would you not go for afternoon tea. Doesn't know you very well then that and I said it and not that I'd like to get clipping and she said Have you heard of the any nightclub what and the rest is history and I do remember now it being open. Being with people of all different ages and so it was a wonderful example of how it reaches across all generations Yes absolutely and I've always gone shopping I've done. Apparently I don't before I could walk because you're also on that darned absolute joy full of. What you say that. I don't know about anybody else but I find it's such a stress buster Hey when I'm a bit 10 for you I mean life can be tricky anyway. But. The radio loud and but coming to a club is different it's the this that is energy of the group and I. Love this place and because it's different from any other nightclub n.t. And what makes it different well 1st start. Of I absolutely love every single age group I adored and. However when you have lots of very young people that are having a great time and I'm old enough to be the great grandmother it's a k. I can still turns but I love the mix we are a different group and it covers a whole different ages and it's it's about feeling really safe here and really good fun and I particularly like it there is no judgment and as far as I'm concerned this is about coming and having a good time it's not in my old day about coming here and waiting to be picked. Up so it's out of the way about so your 1st time you came with a group but you have been on your own before yes interestingly I love my lovely group of people but they're actually not into clubbing they came specially for me after that 1st initial time I've come constantly all my own and I've never felt awkward. You know woman on heroin coming into a club it always felt very welcome and the music genre is great what I noticed about you is your darn thing a lot and you don't say anywhere it doesn't have to be the dance floor over here by the door response by this pillar. And you do you do that a lot but occasionally you sit down and you observe and you want to ask you about about some of the things you say what you know how about Ok And when I'm absolutely scream crooked which they seriously I don't sing dance but then I love watching people having a good time and people sometimes come up to me and say oh but you really could dance or I can't dance or I wish I could and that's rubbish it's all about yourself how to make your heart sing in your soul fly and I love sitting down and watching people just having a really good time there's happy faces here everybody is enjoying themselves and what we're doing is that we end up seeing we end up in agreement. Which I think is already have I lived just it does it feel like a community to you absolutely absolutely and there are often the same faces and sometimes new but there is a real feeling of community here that's what makes it different and special from any other club I've been to before or that's fantastic scenarios that's I guess what we tried to create in the early days and you'll see if there's ever talk about your outfits as well that's always a good jewels loves them outfit I think say and I love your theme though it's an even when you haven't got. Married I was just coming to t.t. You know you know. She comes down the stairs and you go here's Jules she's arrived so there was one time you were Christmas elf Yes What about snow What will you be wearing. I haven't quite I have I've got I don't I want to keep. I'm a sucker I can just go to 3 outfits and it's always at the last minute that I get into the say all right so you just something they know I will pay just as a 10. I wish I were a justification. That that would be something I'm very much look forward to if he said Thank you Charles Ok thank you he said. Hey I'm Jules I love to go out and just line this is the register. I have. Right here we go this is the residency club culture. Stand in it a crowd. Around me. You were listening to club culture part of the residency on b.b.c. Radio Cambridge. The couple streets of Cambridge a famous just off the markets is Rose Crescent a narrow quite pedestrian straight line to betakes and small cafes Oh a McDonald's. For the last decade this is been a destination for the. Fellow organized and I wanted to make our 10th birthday really special so we met up to make a plan I'm here with my good friend Nick Welsh and obviously today being the day of the 10th anniversary event we thought we better have a little pretty meeting. Little bit of housekeeping I've got print out the lace 12 I got today Nick you're going to look clamorous as you always do and you know the shoes the hair the makeup the whole 9 yards I just put on an Au. Pair of joggers and. Do what you can say that you. Know just yeah it's 10th birthday exciting lots of people very busy lots of interest lots of press I have bought the cake great and I have all saved bought some balloons we have done the play thing before and I'm rather pathetic man I will buy 4 or 5 balloons take those big to look they're just normal size but they really want to put. One slightly so thanks for that extends the tenderly. I have got that big silver number 10 we sing Happy Birthday. Bash me play you. Have to be one Stevie Wonder and then we could do that the same times bring out the cake yes we need to. Think nice synchronized I wave the big balloon and you. Know I got it and also. Got it this is how our meetings are very organized we were just remembering. About how we came up with the name can you remember that day I can remember the day I can remember sitting in your kitchen getting a little bit oh my God we're not going to be able to do this we can't think of a good thing in fact it got so far that I think I designed I think I designed it a logo or some. Which was. Babysitting beats I think when you have these kind of discussions you have to go through the rubbish named after you have to work through it and it did just come to the thing that we were so pleased about was the double double meaning it's the early night club meaning that it. Was a good up close that fairly good it's also a club and it's an early club Yeah we. Made the high fives that went on there was a real simplicity to it is it does what it says on the tin is a company that just was really nice and the 3rd meaning of club is community and. It's what we've been talking about the last of the punters is that you feel like you're part of some exclusive club. A bit of a kind of a bit of a scene suppose and I think that's kind of played to our strengths over the years. Many many many a night I think occasionally probably what's made us feel a bit bored is anyone is doing and go into the same night it does get repetitive boring but then we did a few times to sites to do a few different to. Do the 1st different one I think one of the 1st was the. Farm Shop and we did a little outdoor and we did it we did it Glastonbury weekend and we did a kind of. Thing we changed the playlist a little bit to be a little bit more. Of a festival. So that was a kind of half outdoor indoor thing with the guys are put up with a coke so it was great and we. Said we did different. Number but they were street to advance their right to keep us working up there so we were able to create a kind of fats feel atmosphere and then they had this thing called The Shack that you were in there under the corrugated iron shack with the d.j. Thing set up with a pallet. It's all very. People absolutely loved it we went on like it was Saturday night so I think we went on to one scary people were the same it was the same thing it was oh my gosh I'm allowed to be here now to be out I'm standing on the tables I mean. It was. In the evenings and you know you get the whole kind of. In the sun going down and it is a bit more of a kind of hippie kind of thing I guess which is I did one year to do our version of the maple because it's always these things where we owe our business we run a crusade to make except school for people of our age because it didn't seem fair and then we want to say to have a maple because that didn't seem fair either so you have these steps. Coming back in the morning when you are taking your kids to school looking at the backs of their lives. It's not fair so we decided to create our own version obviously our budget slightly smaller than theirs so Alex what time do I need to be there tonight what's the plan what's the deal was going down well we will try to be there. Because we do I would like to get cracking. Late tonight you know that you're that night to be home by 10 o'clock it will you know it's a Friday that means. You could be having taken toast. And that the. Or on the table one of the. Ok I'll see you later. Cross Cambridge shere get more from the residency by searching for us on b.b.c. B.c. B.b.c.
