Live live . Live live. And that is walk the moon Steve Jobs a with b.b.c. Radio Bristol on this wonderful Wednesday next up on the program going to talk to 2 great dancers from the county dance company who are at the Bristol Vic tonight radio Bristol is an imaginary payroll Yes yes it is enjoying the sensation of know how. This is opening of the e-mails on the radio please tell me your favorites just. Chop them by travelling because you like to see a. Twinkling you're. Listening. To something they would like you is b.b.c. Radio Preston. Steve you know I'm with you on this Wednesday afternoon delighted to say I'm joined the studio by 2 wonderful dancers at least that's what they tell me. We have all the way from Denmark toca Brook brony strong brave Yes Cup with its 3 tricky elements always find the best Livia Edgington perfect there was lovely thank you so much for coming today the pair of you you're both in the can do co dance company here at the Bristol Old Vic the leading inclusive dance company you were there last night and you're there again tonight with 2 different works and we'll talk about those in a moment but let's just talk individually with you just to get your credentials livea Now you're based in London I am childhood in Boulder to know correct yes I know you've done your research also right you support the Bolton football club I don't know where you don't have to it's not mandatory you know to be honest they're not one of the best football clubs in the country I know but my my dad is a big Manchester United fan I see I have to have to go with welfare and I think I would get offended Now you began dancing tap a modern when you were younger than you did just tell me about your early days what got you into dance initially Well I think my my my mum took me to a show and just could see that I really enjoyed it and went looking for something maybe for me to do well off the court your imagination you went on to study contemporary dance you were taught choreographers over the years I see we're in Norway in Switzerland in the past what you've done in those countries done some independent projects choreographed a piece with a group of artists and we receive some money from Switzerland and Norway and we've taken it on tour around there it's nice that we can do go we have space to really invest in the company but also develop our own artistic practice and then feed it back into the work we do together so that's you know in Switzerland that's that's kind of that work what's the reaction when you talk to countries like that. Really mixed in Switzerland I find that they're really generous with feedback so sometimes I feel like in this country have been so polite after a show they just say like oh it was great you know but in Switzerland they were quite critical but in the best way you know to in order to push the work forward where you join can dunk come to come to come in 2017 for the original production of face and we have you're performing tonight what was that like because this was you were putting it together that times exciting times well I joined in as we like my 1st days in the studio with us mean which was so exciting because of joining this company that really admired but also her work is kind of really intense and you have to just go for it you have to dive in at the deep end really and it was a great way to get to meet the rest of the dancers it wasn't tip toeing around it was really wild and and wonderful to do these long kind of improvisations which were. Kind of playing a lot with cartoons images of cartoons which were kind of extreme but talk more about the shows in a moment and a bit more detail but this solo to talk a property now you're Danish down south is based in London on your Yes That's that's right and I recently took up and study dance in Denmark What was your origins I mean how did you get into dance Originally I came from gymnastics have a background background in gymnastics that Minturn and then I I just wanted to change I want to do something else so I took this 6 months dance course yes that literally just changed everything for me what was it about it that really sort of struck a fire inside you I think it's just it's the it's the moving and it's like when it when you start moving you you can sort of 12 into yourself and become someone else . That's I really enjoy that yeah that kind of presence that creates where you've created workshops yourself in the past on you in Denmark in Europe you've studied contemporary dance in Leeds What was it like as an experience it was a big change to moved to move from Denmark to Leeds actually what was your English like that not not as it is today. A lot said. It was a big change I've never been to the to the u.k. Before I moved to Leeds so just just that step was quite make it itself when you go to Denmark and you go to Copenhagen is it worth going to see The Little Mermaid statue or is it complete waste of time. Its place in a very nice area is it full of tourists all the yeah yeah if you want to remove those before you can go there I just thought I'd love to get a cab I got never been there but this is one of those all mandatory thing if you want to have to see it yeah she's very small though yes so you have you have to like I just saw you know so you just in general how much you joined can do co in 2014 for the creation of let's talk about this what was that production and that was a very different kind of dance production it was with the crook of a called it in Patel was also the shell artist mainly a visual artist and it was his 1st start piece he made. Which were a very different way of working he worked a lot with text a lot with humor and a lot of with a lot with speaking in voice. So that was actually the 1st time I've done work like that since I started let me do the choreographers differ a lot and some have a very firm idea of precisely what they want to start with another one is a much more free and take ideas from the cast yeah definitely the productions we've been been in since I joined the company they kind of bring their own ideas are starting points but they're really curious about what we think too and it's really nice way to work and you feel like you can offer yourself in your own ideas as an artist and they're ready to listen and we have been also in other productions where it's like 5678 learn these counts learn these steps or whatever. Pressurize to me I don't yeah I went to a rumba class years ago I was terrific I suppose you could either do or you can get some coffee about the company can do co is a world leading professional dance company bridging the mainstream and the experimental it's both approaching powerful collaboration's create distinct performances and far reaching learning experiences we should mention 1st of all your very special come because a very inclusive company isn't it yeah just explain that side of it because it's really interesting isn't it so we we we are a company by disabling under stable dancers and we work together as any other professional dance company would do. We have we work with with high income. We work everything we were collaboratively with the artist directors and the whole team behind can you go and we have a we we collaborate with them so we we don't come with a fixed opinion about things we don't come with a fixed solution but we work things out yes. As we would in any given situation now you yourself have only got one arm why what happened in your case we will not know if you haven't answered and like this I say and what other I know you don't like the word disability is that word it's of loaded isn't it which other was I don't know the correct phrase but which other issues or how to put it in a way that to know what other ways to does it manifest amongst the group I was watching a video earlier on you got members in wheelchairs one of the things you then we have a woman with with one leg. And another woman with an arm like me missing up on the other one now is watching the video of you on Strictly which was just an amazing performance actually it actually made me feel quite moved when I was watching it because it's. Amazing performance to a David Bowie track and you were the 1st thing contemporary group to go on strictly a performer that we involved in that yes yes I was like them it was a really fast process to be honest we had hardly any time to pull it together but it was nice to meet the dancers in that way because we had to just group gather together and figure it out they obviously have a really specific training and won't necessarily used to being so creative which is what we're used to in a sense to make like us talk with same make things happen and collaborate and so it was nice to try to find a way to communicate with them through movement and I think what we made was reflective of both of our styles and. Really call it tension hopefully it was really powerful just reading the messages underneath the video on you today people saying how powerful moving it was a really great piece of work wasn't it yeah I was surprised the people I'm sure just tuned in because several people inside didn't even realize these people had disabilities I was watching and then suddenly you think that lady's not Gallego singer it's just an incredible ensemble piece isn't it and I think also it's the conversation from it really highlights what dance can can do and what dance can be and who can dance and and what movement can create that like these obvious relationship with men and women dancing together it's not necessarily with the wage thing should be and have to be I guess so many possibilities of. Of what. What it means to be human in movement I think it's also a really great way. Not necessarily exposure for the company but a chance for then people to look into the company and come to see a show like Bristol tomorrow and see well well the things the company does it's a way for them to see different sides of contemporary dance that we were so publicly visible for that 2 and a half minutes or whatever but well people can see tonight they can't exactly you know you've got a double bill a provocative indie music inspired work it's the Old Vic 730 you know 2 pieces this is talk about them into our talk you talk about hot mess yeah because you were in the original production of that as far as I know were you aware that this is a collaboration between the CAGR affair and designer Theo Kling Cardia and also Joe Newman of the band yeah just tell me about that particular work so the particular work kind of deals with with the potential of beginning parts like what what what he said beginning and what can a beginning of anything look like. It's kind of like never achieving anything as a score or as an idea that we can figure out on stage when it's described as an unpredictable an archetype performance set to a pounding eclectic score question How long does not run for that particular dance I believe it's about 30 minutes or so has a structure to it here within that structure you have a certain amount of freedom do you yeah so we're so we're improvising within difference course the piece I made from different scores which we then improvise in between with the other one is face in which you were in the original version of Yasmin Goddard tell me a bit about that so the piece is really wild and colorful and kind of goes through like an hour old journey where we can be going quite soft and subtle and goes to the completely extreme where you could think we could go could they get wild or almost gone. At the end of that. I kind of want to go again it's like a really childish year and I'm ready to go again it's the best way of keeping fit dance I think without doubt now you're going to be on tonight at the Old Vic but then you're going to London and beyond that are you staying with the company you 2 or you get off or you are from yeah no we stay. Well enjoy your time in Bristol what was the reaction like last night really won the audience was lovely I didn't get a chance to speak to anyone after the show but from then performing was really great and it's a beautiful space I was a super place but enjoy your performance and I never success with it or thank you for coming and thank you so much thanks speaking there to Tokyo and a Livia from the can do co company there at the Bristol Vic tonight 730 with those 2 pieces hot mess on face in and you can find out more details on their website which is can do co dot co dot u.k. . They're the 2nd largest order of mammals after rodents with over a 1000 species worldwide therefore limbs are adapted as wings making them the any mammals naturally capable of true and sustain the flight scientists believe that bats 1st appeared between 65100000000 years ago the same time as the dinosaurs bats are more maneuverable the birds many bats are insect to vs and the rest a fruit eaters a few species feed on animals other than insects for example the vampire bats feed on blood back down has been mined as guano from caves and uses fertiliser for thousands of years in many cultures bats a populous so sheets of darkness evil witchcraft vampires and death a single brown bat can catch around $600.00 mosquito sized insects in an hour vampire bats don't suck blood they lap it up well they do is they bite their prey typically a cow and that blood from the wound bats of God very fast metabolism they can digest bananas mangoes and berries in about 20 minutes. Bats keep warm by folding their wings around them trapping air against their bodies for instance insulation scientists are trying to copy the enzymes found in vampire bat saliva to treat heart conditions and stop the effects of strokes in humans the bracken back cave in Texas is the largest known back colony in the world over 20000000 bats live there when the bats leave the cave a group is so large it looks like a huge storm on radar some Mexican free tell'd bats can fly up to 250 miles in a single night reaching speeds of up to 60 miles an hour the world's largest bat is the giant golden crowned flying fox a rare fruitbat it's got a wingspan of 5 to 6 feet that's a whopper in Southeast Asia small club foot bats roost inside bamboo stalks to reach their home the bats squeeze into an opening a small is no point 4 inches about the width of a fingernail in West Africa small woolly bats live in large spider webs some seeds will not sprout unless they're passed through the digestive tracts of a band and bats spread millions of seeds every year from the ripe fruit that they eat a single brown bat lives longest with a lifespan of around 40 years in China and Japan bats are symbols of happiness in China the word for baton good fortune of both pronounced food. Fruit bats are a traditional food source for the people of Guam and have been hunted to the point where bats are currently listed as endangered the chub lipped necked a bat has the longest tongue relative to its body length of any mammal the battery tracks its tongue into its rib cage when it's not being used. About its eco location is so finely tuned that it can detect objects as thin as a human hair Most bats rest sleep mate and give birth upside down. For their body size bats have larger brains than birds the wing membrane helps the bat regulate body temperature blood pressure water balance and gas exchange and finally in $600.00 b.c. The great storyteller Aesop told a fable about a bat that borrowed money to start a business the business failed and the back had to hide to join the air a day to avoid the people who owed money to so they go that's why but it's only come out at night about a message from Susan is a friend of wildlife Jane's Jane is a hospital course Jane is able to listen to you on the ward of the moment home to listen to a poem she just had a drain put on along golly Well I'm sorry to hear that anyway she's managed despite the fact she's not very well at the moment Jane to write a poem about baths or is it. Cricket bats round of bats bats to hit a ball but there's a mammal very strange hanging by the wall it's upside down by the feet it's face a foxy mask leathery wings wind around itself quite an some task at night the bats will reach their roost for insects they will search and when the lights of days dawns soon they'll fly back to their perch wonderful work there from wild life Jane at center an imaginary bunch of flowers and also some chocolates and while robot is. Chosen someone for today's do to the days the 26 affair you go on with it's Phyllis none sauteeing Primrose peachy No I don't know who that was in a nut is aka funny Crowder. Saltine Primrose peach can tell she was born on this day in 1001 she was an English restaurant critic television cook writer so she was alive today she'd be about 110 years old Blimey ironic and 11911 years old when it was the end of her life she looked about well she did she was often on television cookery demonstrations and in print with major Johnny credit who played the part of a slightly bumbling and act as been yet although he wasn't actually married to her because the marriage was polygamous because she was already married to another bloke when they got married so it was void absolutely right no wonder he drank I know hope and she's often brought back to this day in theater demonstrations where they put on a show and they cook for you at the same time yet she was a show woman as she would look at food these days it was disgusting she put things like green coloring into mayonnaise Instead she was a big fan of the volatile as well and yet she was very patronizing to people as well but despite that she is still a deserve in. Your food after you've started eating it so if you've got a bag of chips if you haven't touched them you just sit them on the side they are less likely to want them than if you have already started eating and there's something about the chips or whatever maybe already being there is one of one it's not it's a mark of excellence something of humans been involved in the process exactly we had a certain flavor to it and so they want to do the more so they have done this research will be speaking to one of the researches behind that study on the show this afternoon what do you say to those people who say they should research things that are more important than chips and seagulls or to be honest all the stuff that's more important is probably a bit more dull Yeah we like talking about things like seagulls Lovely was to be a super program with the latest news right before you go to my guest tomorrow is your brother yes I've heard about the William Hansen is coming in now he is an expert on manners What's he like privately sloppy and ill mannered is not true I mean he'll have you saying this but obviously professionally he presents himself as an etiquette of course he does it's a sad he he always says that what you do in your own home is your own business and let's just say I've sat around the dinner table with him a lot of times over the course of my life and he doesn't always practice what he preaches but he's very polite he's very well mannered Why should my 1st question will be where your brother says you're a colossal hypocrite What do you say to that.
