Random saying it's a sign of strength and maturity he said being an impartial honest broker was the right way forward the conservatives say the stance won't wash with voters in the late of the Liberal Democrats Joe Swensen says Jeremy Koeppen should not duck out of making a decision it's quite astonishing people who want to remain they were a leader not by stuff and I think it is just Baucus beliefs that some of the day who is standing for the rule of leading our country can then say that on the biggest issue that we have faced for generations they're not going to take a position it's a total application of leadership Bristol's homeless community of being encouraged to read just a to vote you don't need to have an address to be resisted but you do need to fill in a form on Piper or online and your polling card is seen by post several local organizations offering support including the Feeney cafe down bands come up with the idea while talking to his mother. Were able to register to vote which I didn't think. So she thought maybe I could do something about it we're sort of. Celsus up a little station or city center. To try to get as many people who would out of. A u.k. Ticket holder has come forward to claim a $105000000.00 pound euro millions jackpot prize one on Choose day the idea of the ticket holder and whether they're an individual or some tickets will not be revealed unless they decide to go public new research suggests the commonly held view that dogs I see Vinnie is for every one human year is a myth a study found that the aging process in dogs is extremely And even as Sasha slick have reports examining the d.n.a. . Off to a foggy stat and we make some temperatures of 11 degrees Celsius that's b.b.c. Radio Bristol News it's 5 minutes past one I very much like the sound of that's just make a few notes about why that's going on later on and thank you Alexa. Ok let's talk about the travel then and see where the hold up. Thank you very much good afternoon ole Well the hold up some afraid on the southbound side of the m 5 his looking very slow between junctions 16 through 2 at Cribbs Causeway at 17 we have the usual morning call for the story off to neutral for the nth 82 and a new found in ways you head into a Bristol City Center if you will that way it will lead to around 10 minutes onto what Eugenie St Jude and a new found in St the a for 32 adults looking a very slow at need to hold in the street it's also queuing for Temple way and Temple gated to the road to exit the temple. B.b.c. Radio Bristol. So 6 minutes past one we're going to talk about Linda spam run for high tempo. So when I got a message about this earlier in the week of thinking what on earth is this all about now I've not heard of this x. Throwing thing apparently a need venue opened and Bristol this week don't worry it is all done completely safely but it's being put forward as a way to get people off that and out socializing with new people so we thought Ok let's see what's going on here and we sent our reporter Martin f. And o. Lawyer me that is a sign of an axe being thrown at a target and go in there with some precision and some for some jack and Jess what a wonderful friend that works thank you very much you know I've been working out for 2 years so I think about it pretty much down I was a bull's eye I was there was a bull's eye going to start the way of another girl who should get it this time I'm going over home. All not too bad at all was a technique needed for throwing a good axe good technique is not about strength it's more about how much you move your body so you get a lot of people coming in trying to sort of show off a little bit leather it down as high as they can it's not going to help you it's all about moving your body more technique of a Brawn and you are pretty good at the throw in the x. As well just I'm not that color let's see you have to go on you know keep your distance as well she's put 100 pin the throw over her who were in the middle that was a. Credible let's just describe this place win because we are surrounded by all these cages all with boards in and people can come along and throw it seriously that's it so you can people can come and book sessions if they want to people who come in off the street the maximum time of the waiting is is 10 minutes and then we'll always have a lane open so if you just want to come on and have a drink at the bar. And you look so much on the release of stress and it's so different you know computer screens are really that they're on the mobile phones and this is just more of an escape it's more physical it's more tangible you know you can feel it you can see you with your mates you with people you don't know you know and then there's a real big collective feeling you get and you'll be cheering on something random stranger you don't know but moments ago and they get a bull's eye and everybody's cheering that feeling that sound it makes when you heard it the funk it makes it always has a bird it's a thud and. Gets your heart going gets case you go in specially when you're in competition what benefits do you find yes. I love the precision of it may be offset in some ways for a version of meditation you can take your time with or you can improve and it's just you and the x. So it's like the 2 sides of it you know you can can improving you come back to us but you can assist me really competitive have lots of family or friends there's different ways you can and joy thing you always find it cathartic then yeah definitely this is a bit of the new movement which we're seeing are people getting away from their phones and come in and being sociable that's the main thing yeah exactly and that's . That's a big part of whistle puns and sort of are what we want to provide not people looking at phones but get em down I mean it's been around I think. Battle in Canada started annexing 2011 started in 2016 it's one of the ambulance when you walk inside is great isn't it that real sort of punk. Metal word it's all visceral it saw you can touch it you can feel it. What made you choose Bristol as a flight ship stall and I think Bristol is such an up and coming city to realize it's my 1st time in Bristol this this week I'm up from London it's amazing and I was just so much more community here I think and London is a great city but Bristol is definitely the next is the obvious pick of people come for one or 2 days or maybe come for university and end up staying and it's you know I'm tempted myself you know people come up a stag do here I mean such as such a lively city there's so much to do and now you can come and do x. Saying how did you get into the whole movement yourself what I'd love to say that it was you know I was from my from my childhood I was drawing x. It was there in scouting the day you learning it but in all honesty I saw they were hiring and I thought at the very least if I go for the interview I get a free axing session and lo and behold been there for 2 and a half years anybody can do it anybody can do it was your story into the world works throw in you know lots and color in the words but not say I moved in on a few nasty and I was just looking for something you to do I used to look at target shooting back it up and so I was looking for ranges and x. Range popped up so I started fund them on Facebook and then it popped up they were hiring at night with an act of all that I thought yeah I'll give it a go every year and a half ago now and so we have incredible So tell us the benefits of actually being there is that sense of competition. Tell you I get you moving if you if you want to start working anybody anybody new trainees will tell you your muscles your feel muscles the you haven't used in a while and even if you've taken a bit of time off and you go to act. Again the next time your arm will be working it's a great way to move about is a physical activity you are moving your body you know you're not just tapping your fingers you're moving you're cheering shouting It's just amazing to an obvious question isn't it dangerous on the face of it looks dangerous there are they are real axes it is real wood you are throwing but in essence you know we've got an instructor on the lane at all times they're being professionally trained there's really rigorous training that goes into that always aware of where the axes are they'll be spotting things that before the person is even thrown out of notice things about their movement that could pose a danger So no I think there is absolutely no risk. You filled in all the what forms filled in all right forms we do get people to sign in before they come in all the years. Has been open We've never had a major interest winter or 2 we have to he's ready it's going to hurt more than anything almost worse and Papercuts as you can see as well on the ground we have a line that's a good story line for you where everyone gets ready. For the start. And luckily we were playing sport for joining me today couple on the check yeah you're quite well situated in the center of Bristol Yeah absolutely come on down look at it go on our website book a session or if you're just walking on by and fancy drinking a beer it's a common and lovely one going to leave you with one final throw Jesse you can do the best that the 2 of you just. Got Is ups as well or they're going to go 3 together or $3.00 to $1.00 and. Both Jack you've got it I've got it you know this experience. And. Well in my time I have Lang the way I've loved it but I have never tried it is a new one on me but there we go something you can turn your hand to if you fancy it thank you Martin Evans reporting for us. This show Mendez if I. I have you almost 20 past one then on b.b.c. Radio Bristol so we were talking about the benefits of doing something like x. Throwing I really get going work for you different muscle I can have my family saying why don't you just chop logs they'll be helpful for some anyway but talking about things that are good for you good exercise eat can Day Can I just turn our attention to tennis for a moment because that kings tennis club in Bristol there's a program that's all about trying to improve the wellbeing of mums mums you've got little ones little ones who might be in the pram but also some here a little bit bigger and possibly able to play tennis themselves and any shame and she's the head coach at the club and I caught up with her just to hear a bit more about this idea and where it came from I had one child and I've never really been the one. In quite the way to date but I went to a buddy for the. Kids a major we went along and. I just started thinking of the guy I love. The moment needed a class. They went to. So I thought why can't we get the telly. So I suppose the important that we should point out is that this is something these are classes that you can do with your children say when you become a mom it's difficult to get opportunities just disappear off to the gym very easily but with your classes and with ones like you mention the buggy fit one you can take the little one long with you yeah take your baby in the buggy or bar in we got in of course. When they. Were really fat. Duck out checked into the green we very little and then if you got. Your child that you had an hour had the same time they develop balls. And the racket that you've been really lucky you know really the most we get a lot out the tenet that they hear Well I've often thought. No driving your children to different events you know and spotting opportunities and stuff and often so it's a shame that parents can't do something you know well stuff going on you know I like a similar sort of thing isn't it you know you both get to do something it's nice the kids see them and doing active stuff you know. Then in sort of life don't they if they come in whatever the weather is it's really awful the little kids get inside in the clubhouse the women play whatever that is just that you know we live in England and you can go to class on whatever the weather and what are you hearing back is the benefits of this from the mums who are coming along and possibly that children too I say a lot of it is obviously getting to be said that captive tennis is a great goal because you you can use your brain if you want you know they get to doubles and their tactics and they you know they can challenge themselves to develop that technique if they don't want to if they just think you can. Simply act if they can or they do that that that there's there's all those kind of obvious but they found it easy there's no stress and because they're getting something out there as well as the child that it is the 30 a lot of other things their child can do something all they can but there's not very many were literally your babies during an activity at the same time because their love to make friends and a lot of like minded friends and women that want to be active always frontin people with the same Framus knowing that doesn't mean that when you could ask people to one thing to be active Yeah young children having fun doing it because you have this racial afterwards as well there's the they'll have a desk in the restaurant you know where. You know the other the kids but you know there's. You know it's covering. The lunch you know so why does a good place to have a full morning of you know you then done something you've done more than just get out the house to go to a bit of exercise as well and yeah how old are you conscious I mean I don't know what stage. Moms are joining you often having have their babies but a sort of conscious tailoring exercise for people who have you know maybe 456 months yet I need to thank you for ladies I had some of. These people to do it until the lease for 5 minutes 30 minutes. They were. Taken there is very patient no exercise to me you know it's no hard call me thing around the crew it's very much banding together that we do we ask for any medical history those of the women are responsible for their children on the call we tend to get that we some people come with that buggies and creepy in previous years we've had more people with buggies people come to try and then make the people have a kind of told to write them happened or some people then one day that told will go to school but they still coming when we allow that they have to if they're allowed to was absolutely to feel yeah well being is the love even if your kid is good for you do you what do you have to do with this just keep going forward with it or do you want to run out of the clubs as well well you know I'm not sure I mean when we started it I know the thing that triggered me was I've been thinking about the out see a had a local I would say was trying to tell us to make it more accessible to different populations not just with the people and I did initially to make it happen and I know it might be so there I can kind of work with them to do is to make it part of their change they can go program is that one thing similar mindset to open up to us all in the maybe I can. Maybe other clubs and presto initially to be to be fat there's to be me and my community staying groups that I could reach out and and I haven't so that they can picture until now when. We. Around. Me because. It's a good idea when they're speaking to me head coach at the club and someone you know I've become not that long ago going along with a social classes and being able to take a little one ready just essential because otherwise what do you do with them so the idea that you can take them and have them in the primer if they're a little bit older that they can actually play to crack an idea so thank you 25 past we'll have a travel in a few moments if you want to know if there are any routes that you need to avoid or places you need to look out for we'll tell you very shortly after Prince. Thank you. Thank you. Thank. God. I. Was. On. The outs. Thank you. Thank you our. Thanks. To our kids. About. Us. Thank. God. Thank. God. Prints 199928 minutes past one. I'm trying to find out about the travel and see where the delays are we've been reporting if he said this morning and lunch time having me he has marked very slow going around the sensors at the moment specially bath Bristol going on the m 5 and that's from Junction 16 fast take West down to junction 17 for Cribbs Causeway is Lane one of 4 factors traffic approaches junction 17 for the shopping center you can expect an extra 10 to 15 minutes on the journey that traffic heavier than normal although a full bath road that's in both directions need try these gardens ask you to the temperature every once in operation Markham road and obviously that's busy in both directions well near Capitan lane in the road works area so going on the car as a car park on new found a rich street is full cover circus full at the moment. So all the roads trying to get into the God that's new found history and whole history as well I Q In traffic on West Street in bad parts between the lawns here roundabout and the open market roundabout if you spot if you know less no but only if it's safe from New York so 800855949 you survived the x. 3 that we sent you to thank Goodness only just I made sure didn't touch any axes and you've got both ears I can report they are still there. Thank you b.b.c. Radio. This afternoon will bring you an extended afternoon of wives for you a championship a 6 place to City welcome Nazi and forest to a fist to the gates round your just idea of what. Was just in League One Rovers travel this road for a few it was true she was with his very 1st then at 530 past take on Hala Quinn's in the Champions Cup was. The action kicked off today from the With a moment b.b.c. Radio Bristol Yeah not long to go half an hour and Jeff and the team will be with you now each week on the program we're hearing an episode from the 1st series of a brand new b.b.c. Disability sports podcast and one of the podcast presenters is Paralympian turned b.b.c. Reporter Kate gray She's originally from Thornbury and she's alongside fellow presenters 2016 Paralympian hunted dines and act arithmetically together making stumps wheels and war police and this week they're discussing new challenges and catching up with former Paralympic swimmer now 3 time Parikh newest world champion no less Charlotte Henschel Hello I'm Kate Grey I'm recently I've had a dime's and we are stumps wheels and wobblies. Hello and welcome to stuff Wales and Wobblies talking all things power sport disability and any other interesting things we like to chat about my name is Kate Grey I'm a 4 Paralympic swimmer and now b.b.c. Sports reporter and I'm joined by my lovely co-host Hannah Dines Paralympic cyclist and race runner and race maybe t.v. Star and actress we've yet to convince her about taking up a sport is that anything that is taking a fancy so far working with us on the podcast I love sport that I think you both have this is this this wrong impression of me I love sport but I am a grade a spare. Tator. We have seen it yet you know what you really do we don't want everyone taking parts but we need someone there to support us but that is if you don't have any every show I see bridging us into what we're going to talk about today which is kind of taken on a challenge that you wouldn't expect to be able to do step in a comfort zone and I'm really excited about our guest that will be bringing a little bit later he was certainly done that in abundance by what abundance abundance abundance abundant new word abundant. Yes exactly and we'll be talking to a little bit later but I just wanted to get your thoughts on maybe opportunities or times when you've really had to you know take something by the scruff of the neck take on a new challenge step a compass which I think considering all of us about disabilities we've pretty much had to do from day dot impossible I always think of right when I was a child so I lost my left hand an accident when I was 2 and started a problem sausage machine and say what. I know we've covered this already but I did stick my left hand in a sausage machine when I was 2 years old and yet life changed I was then faced with loads of challenges and a lot of cancer you know you can't do this you can't do that no you know I had to do this whether it was starting school mainstream school you know allowed to do sport you going to the south you can't take ballet because you can't do the exams properly and you know constantly face these challenges I think when I was younger my parents did a lot of fighting for me but now that I'm older I'm can't see that no I can do this and many times I fall flat on my face but I think we we have to have that you don't know if we're going to be able to show others and prove people wrong yeah I do agree I have an issue with the can do attitude because there's a lot of things I can't do but when there is something that you would be able to do but just in a slightly different way there's often loads of barriers to go around so you have to go in fighting because a lot of the time people only see you think Ok you have to get into a building via stairs they don't see that kind of thing you know they haven't seen that you yeah you need to get aid to be different not like a different way. I don't know so that's kind of that's why I don't like the kind of attitude because you know you can do it just not trying hard enough well maybe the only way realty is that you don't know I'll say I need infrastructure thank you so it's more like you have to have to plan that raid was always so good planning for everything logistical orthe to Wonder Woman That's what we are with you I mean you never intended to be an actress to do you know no I came about this in a very roundabout way was I studied script writing university and I fell into arts into a series of different people I met and opportunities that rose but I literally went in headfirst not knowing what to expect just kind of being a bit nosy I guess the more it was like and then every day since then I've stepped more and more out of my comfort which you constantly have to do as an artist is just so every role you take is not you so you have to pretend to be somebody else and pretend to be somebody else convincingly and that it's hard to keep people out of the time but the last thing we have to scare us hours we have to be other people even doing things yes because it makes you better Yeah I think that's relatable cross all parts of our lives but I think Pixie being a disabled person taking part in sport the assumption is that you're physically disabled you can't do it and therefore the attitude that we've had to adopt throughout is Ok I'm going to go going to try out I mean I can be it in part and pick sport but I also take part in able bodied sport so I play netball for anybody club and I love that feeling of walking out on court and they're all looking me thinking why have they bought 100 person to play technically a 200 and they even have to check your nails to make sure not too long all of them to please. And then what's happened the umpire. Like ha and I could have just asked a 100 other hand and say they. Give it a bit of charity in the 1st 5 minutes but then they think this guy knows what she's doing quite good but we have and is that satisfaction so I think having that mindset is really really Kay and whenever I've spoken to Palin because these disabled people that has been that there are a shoot through out it is exhausting at times it can be. Exactly the same way you guys know it from spore I come from it from an art scene background where. Most roles in the past for people with disabilities your roles that you play will always be sense about this on disability and so to be able to have roles where the disability kind of irrelevant and not even part of the story that's so empowering and is a kind of a soldier could do it kind of feeling I call it being a Paralympic athlete actually just in like her a work email if I have to chase off an invoice more than 5 times I'll feel like I'm already you know I just I'm a Paralympian you know but that is part of the parcel I think is just saying that to be a successful disabled person you just need to push on hard and take not take no for an answer I think we just you have to have that mentality and that's not that's I'm not saying that's Ok because a lot of people don't have your attitude and that's what I do think I suffer if they don't exactly 100 percent and it shouldn't be like that book suddenly I mean was it we're making changes because I'm holding this whole For example the b.b.c. Is so excessive or I came here to turn it was noble. Let's not talk about the toilet seat. You know I'll pass on that her know we love you. But we want afraid to then make that call and say there's a wall between in the accessible toilet and. I didn't fall in guys so it's it was almost it wasn't that bad it's just a day to day struggles we have to go see but you know look it's all here I feel like us being here just shows how far we've come and you know you've gone straight to come dancing and we've got you know a disabled person almost in the every year if you look across different shows there are people press. And on our screens and I think that just shows how far we've come so. That we don't get so far but is there is still so along with you know this is a long way to go and that is that saying to maybe introduce our guest now former Paralympic swimmer now 3 time power canoeist world champion has someone who has really taken on many different challenges and completely gone above and beyond what many would expect Charlotte hello hello welcome I know you've been listening to her . I mean it's hard to sit there and think oh my god that like a bunch of gossiping Why did. I make I feel like 1st what we did he said about the fact that you are you know recently crowned world champion amazing and in a sport that you don't really recently taken out just give us a little bit of insight into that so feeling of being crowned world champion Yeah I mean it was something you know in my fairly long swimming career that that kind of eluded me a little bit and I was always that kind of staple silver medalist bronze medalist but never quite bridge that got to work on a world stage so when I moved after the Rio Games. I did it very much linked him of what you're saying it was it was a new challenge it was something that I wanted to try I never expected that I'd be good at it it was just an opportunity that arose and I wanted to push myself wanted to learn something new and so it's not something I expected so it's still a little bit overwhelming to quite honest and I'm I've mentioned it several inches just recently or I've only just started to feel like a pod if that makes sense the last couple of years I've been feeling like a swimmer that was trying to paddle a boat well and that transition has taken a little bit of time just because I think I had identified as a swimmer for so long losing that was was huge and it's taken so 3 years to come. It's the point where I I don't feel still like a swimmer 1st if that makes sense. So yeah it's been an incredible journey and I still feel like I've got a lot to learn and yeah long long made the journey continue Larry Well yeah so you've been listening to open talk right now how stepping out your company is that what you kind of relate your experience from transitioning from swimming to canoeing and feed a lot actually I'm not done yet I need to make more of a point here yeah hugely and I. Got to a point where in my swimming career that I thought you know this is probably I'm not going to be able to progress any more but I still didn't want to not be part of that part of that movement it's infectious and I felt like I had still got more to offer in some way shape or form and I didn't know how that would manifest itself I wasn't sure if it was still going to be as an athlete or moving into sort of retirement and then giving back in some other way but this opportunity arose and it fitted perfectly it just seemed to the stars seem to align and everything worked how. It was I'd lost that sense of who I was and that was hugely out of my comfort zone because. Without swimming I didn't really know who Charlotte was is I make sense I've been so ingrained in not sport for such a long time and so I think that was the biggest thing to push myself out of my comfort zone was that it was a complete unknown I lost that sense of identity but it was worth having not kind of like you said earlier that you do something that makes you scared and that scared me that I was stepping into a world that I had no idea if I'd be any good at it be if I fitted that world if that world fitted me and. Losing that sense of who I was was was frightening So yeah hugely and I again I'm a firm believer that reset if doing things that make you scared even a time it feels horrific but I think that's you know he can grow and develop as a person by putting yourself outside of thought. So in the last why why canoeing. Is is it because I know if this was made by I was a pro a flea or any kind of us. I don't times what no no study and I wanted to swap sports I would literally go for the z s $10.00 but you can already swim so those are you saying how scary it is but you can swear money for the boat so I would be hopeless but you consider an easy sport than risk. One which requires sitting on your bum for as long as possible which is what I did was. Show. I mean I just hypothetically speaking I would always choose the one that would require the least mother for. Of energy and training but I don't think there is one is the more special you get older as well but Charlotte was like yeah why can a 0. If it's different it's very different I don't know why it was I tried if you were the sport side how to have a double cycle and I mentioned slightly into the word if a party tries. I know I was but then I was like I'd have had to move to Manchester and everything just kind of fitted with connecting it was where I got house it was you know the least amount of upheaval when I was already paving the rest of my life so and like kind of said it was very much a water based thing it was like I. Was I'm not going to lie see it the thought of being in a canoe I know I'd love it oh ring is so beautiful it's like another kind of get out that you had to be stuck in a swimming pool it was like me I would drown cause you where do you know this is you would know you floating in a canoe No I'm not even lying right we went on holiday and Joe was convinced my boyfriend was convinced he could teach me how to swim after half an hour he said that I was in teachable. Moments are a father and. The how long and I still don't realize you can't swim. I think I've got I've got no interest in swimming I just can't do what you do talk to me. Like I can do it I don't want to be right I don't want to I don't want. Anything I want to sit by the Pru with me tell you you can do another I can't drink as many were. Watching you lot when I'm pretty sure you have had some PAs in your canoe experiences anyway right here Yeah definitely because if you sort of capsize isn't things. You and I think I moved across in December so. Yeah so we train outside so really it was it was horrendous You know I've never worn so many layers of clothing to do in my life so I was like oh yeah but apparently so they told me after that they were like if you can get through the winter it's kind of a bit of a test of courage so they were like if you can possibly say in cycling. Then come summer in your racing in 40 degree heat you know if I could so I could walk in the park so yeah it was even to someone who's comfortable watering you know is happy to swim it was pretty you. Really don't really have had the biggest probably because I can just yeah I did cry in the times. Or cold or anything it doesn't it would make a difference I would I would hate it and my house and the Asians again particular in the depths of winter trying. To you guys I don't know how you do it shot I'm curious because you're one of many that have now made that transition to a new sport I mean I retired and had a few people are Ok what news will you going to take up a nice bit like I mean are we supposed to just move on to a new sport and you've done it very successfully Do you thought maybe at times people just quite I say comfortably but you know people making that successful transition to a new sport maybe undermines the fact that it's just not competitive enough or it may be just specific Paralympic sport. That is possible today yeah I think and that was a real question I had in my mind when I moved because I think as a parent m.p. And I think you constantly get that question of why is it easier than lympics pool and I feel like quite a lot of Paralympians feel really defensive about that because when you're involved in the world you know how competitive it is and how hard you train and so that was a real thing for me is like I don't want people to think well this is easy and so the more I kind of delved into it and the more people that I've met the have transitions boy I think a lot of it is. We part of this for us that have the classification system and there are disabilities that fit certain sports that are now how do I discovered canoeing when I was you know 6 or 7 years old which is when I started to do competitive swimming it might have been that that was the sport that I decided to take up but at the time swimming was available and it was something that I enjoyed and so maybe I was never supposed to be a sort of maybe this was I was always supposed to be but it just took me a little time to get there and I think you can kind of see when people move into new sports if that if that profile fits that Spore and fits it well then of course it's going to be a successful transition but I don't think it undermines the spore I think it's just that perhaps that's where there will always supposed to be and joins us I mean is yeah I think that and obviously that question is always going to be asked I think it's something that we're always going to have to kind of try and come back because we want people to acknowledge that for especially part of baseball is competitive and you go to part of the games and it is super competitive but yeah I was very mindful of that and I think that I think the only thing that we can do is to continue to spread the word parley with 4 is competitive and people are full time athlete we commit just as much time to support as our able bodied counterparts would never dream of. And you guys only are you just flipping off to a new boss so there are some nice disses and really tiny bits this like oh it's easy and I was in a you know this but no you're Which there definitely is also I know it's mostly many people so of course there's a limit that you know limited field but it doesn't mean that it is easy but actually we're saying doing 2 sports maybe doesn't look great for an athlete because it makes it seem like it's been easy but in acting you have to do it all the time having the ability to transfer between different you have to have the ability or oh shoot you don't last 5 minutes in this industry every single role you take is different if if you can do comedy if you can do drama if you can do theatre . If you've got a wide range of skills that's always going to work better for you because you won't be considered a one trick pony and you'll have a career with so much mileage over say yeah. And yes it's kind of an essential for the industry I'm in to be able to be a bit of a chameleon Yeah what would you have changed to well I mean let's just say I have tried a few I think I just lost the mindset when you spend your whole childhood and adolescence phase of being horizontal animal and then you start thumping your feet on the ground for sprinting athletics want to I mean the injuries that appeared not knees hips all sorts of problems I'm sure you've probably experienced that as well shot of your body being used in slightly different way and only saying hold on a minute no that's not what I'm used to and and I was lucky I got you know that was thrown at me that I didn't expect it not to be have I still got the athlete mindset or is this a chance for me to take on a new career which I was very lucky was available to me post 2012 everyone was like oh pardon pick sport disabled people oh let's provide it comes back to that conversation we had stopped which is would I be missing a trick if I just said oh I read lots idea of becoming a reporter but I'm going to put it on hold for 4 years old only I hope I have a new home because it's a you lose opportunities and I've had good. Stations with the likes of you and other friends that you know that sometimes they let me get a lot Eve kind of sort out your career now pro sport and I want to show you ever so fearing that retirement question and what happens next what would you do after spore every day affair and I actually don't anymore I used to do a lot I used to fear it hugely when I swam and I think that's the benefit of a getting older and also the benefit of hindsight and that's why I feel really lucky to have had this kind of 2nd opportunity if you like because. I feel like I've got time to rectify the things I wish I'd done differently when I swam and so I very much when I was to swim I would go to training come home I'd say or lie and watch a box set all day or go for coffee room and even the I think dream but I had so much time in a bit of the day because the way that swimming training is bookended I didn't use it productively enough I just kind of sailed through year on year sort of only focusing on the swimming and I think now I am a bit older and I don't want to waste that time I need to start preparing for what comes next so I think now I've I make a conscious effort to do you know the things there are outside of sport and I actually think that's helped me and my performance because it's not all encompassing I I kind of go Well I am more present in body and mind when I'm at training if I have something else to to give me a bit of perspective and go Well actually yes this is incredibly important but it's not your entire person and you are other things besides that what I'm saying and a bit of a view on social media and all of us highlight the fact that on Twitter you have 50000 followers which in my eyes I'm thinking social media of influence it might 1st one how does the Royal Ascot Swiss If we don't we don't have many thousands I mean we're not going to go into details but that is a significant amount of followers for I'm going to say for a part of yes because it's just not common ready yet no it's not so I honestly I don't know how it happened but I feel like it's probably has nothing to do with book by tweet a few years ago and a mention just in. My most successful to his fans are like they're very crazy very passionate let's say. Like them. Since then so I don't know I honestly don't know but again it's I think it's just about kind of harnessing not and kind. Using it for fit for good doing more viral tweets Yeah you see mention here much like one direction I think I'm not thinking are they are. Important is social media and you as an athlete and growing your career from that side of things well I think it's become important in every aspect of life oh yeah I say important and I say that very loosely I think it's a very powerful tool but it can also be incredibly damaging and I'm sure you guys if either experience that or see not so I think it can be brilliant but I think especially I always I'm thankful and I'm I'm aware I'm about to sound like a dinosaur but I'm thankful that I didn't grow up my teenage years. Were all I say this so. So I would honestly the pressures Yeah can you imagine growing it was social media you know oh my what I think stresses me out well not Lisa pressured to use I don't have a felt this but I know we've all just got in about the shit would told you we need to be more active social media if you want to get sponsorship if you want to grow the maze and you kind of have to find that balance really don't you thought you found that balance of using it to help but not hinder Yeah I think so and I think that and again there are so many positive things that can come from it I mean I also think that you know imagine being a young person with a disability and you might not have ever met anybody with a disability or seen some of their disability and then there's this whole world is opened up to you and you can see someone or in whatever field is been incredibly successful or having a presence or a voice and that you know would be incredibly powerful for somebody who is perhaps struggling or has never seen somebody like them so I think it can be hugely positive but I think also it comes with the flip side doesn't it where I think it is just about managing it and not letting it become everything and knowledge it's. It's a slightly flowery version of real life isn't it that's what we always you know best well put it is the reason why I think before we say goodbye Charlotte we can't avoid the topic of Tokyo and I know that there is a Paralympic gold medal that has just not quite come your way. This is now is now the time Well I yes I have a glaring as you've mentioned I have a glaring hole in my part of the medal collection I've got the other 2 and I've got one is completely set so. I would love it and I think I would be lying if I said that when I moved so it wasn't. A store that into my mind that I could go to number games and hopefully compete for a gold medal but. I've kind of got top point where I mean I'm not going to let that define my career I mean I feel incredibly proud of what I've achieved already and if I get the opportunity to to go to the games next year or and then maybe win a medal whatever color as I'm you know when I was a kid I just wanted to go to one Paralympic Games I just wanted to be part of it and if you just said to me that I have been to Siri and potentially would be going to 4 I probably wouldn't you know I would just not sure hand-off forgive the pun for for that. I love it so yeah I think you know it would be incredible but I don't feel like it's a career defining thing but yeah I'd love to be there and just be part of another one would be great she's so modest I mean I've had the joy of competing with this girl before so welcome with her from a and into point of view and speaking of puns I can't let this show and without that might have unfolded as well I was interviewing after a race and I believe you're in that to me. You haven't heard. I think I saw the opportunity I thought I'm just going to state the facts Shauna you were just in a race for 7 dwarfs. And I didn't hear people. I'm a coach who's just said 7 dwarfs and then the great thing was you then followed up and said Yes that's right I was just in a race to 7 Dwarfs I don't even know if we did mention Snow White and all but. I didn't really just did I'm sure because I was like This is too good an opportunity to I was a very good day and 7 dwarves I was like somebody is going to make this connection and. I remember going into clearly and yeah it's one of my 5 favorite moments from the mixer and any come to that are going to still maintain the professionalism and she will porcelain skin like snow while not quite the dark dark How do I know what I do hope that we will be in Tokyo and interviewing you after what might be a gold medal I don't think I'll be quite as many cheesy puns after that but it's been a real pleasure talking to. Yeah and I think it felt like you just sort of given us a real nice insight but also a personal insight into kind of the struggles in the highs and lows of changing around in sport and so I thank you want to thank you I had my lovely thank you so much for people who are listening and just as a reminder if you want to get involved share your thoughts share with us any funny or quit embarrassing moments that you've had Please hash tag stumps Wales will please on Twitter social media whatever you want to choose and you can find all the podcast of this series on b.b.c.
