A good morning yes Sunday the 15th of December 10 days to go to the big day at 9 minutes past 6 that was Nick battle in China and if Nick's listening this morning I'd like to say thank you for his lovely Christmas card it's really nice touch. I didn't expect to get it but Nick thank you very much and it's been such a pleasure playing your music this year let's look forward to next year and plenty more coming I think he's recording some new stuff at the moment I'm sure of it so anyway thank you how have you been have you had a good week has it been a nice one have you done everything you needed to do I managed to get some time with the family we also for a family Christmas my we call it the office party where myself and Debbie my wife and the 2 kids we always go somewhere to the movies or something like that this year we decided to to office nights out. So all the next one is 2030 tomorrow we're going to go to the movies together but we did go to the opening night of pantaloon this week which was brilliant Oh yes it was and we went to the one in Wimbledon the new Wimbledon Theatre with Samantha wall mac and one of the Pussycat Dolls face people that were allegedly Garrett was the fear fairy godmother really brilliant really really good really enjoyed it and weirdest thing the next day I was walking through center court shopping center in Wimbledon and there is Samantha Moore Mike who plays the evil stepmother with all this and we could make up and while here and there she was walking with Prince Charming that obviously just come off a matinee full makeup but no cost just the regular. Doing the Christmas shopping that was the weirdest thing but I can say I've seen a wicked stepmother and Prince Charming even they have to do their Christmas shopping so well if you're a bit behind with that you're in good company b.b.c. Radio Bhatia to live in minutes past 6. Please. Please. Please. Byt with me Wallingford parish church choir and on b.b.c. Radio box this time not to look back to last week when we asked whether the music in your local church might be putting you off going one of the leading international Christian song writes As join me on the program is News poll but last he's written him such as above all and as Ana and it might surprise some people to know that he's recommending churches go for a mixed economy of traditional and what he writes modern music will join me last week and I asked if young people still want traditional hymns without a doubt you're absolutely right I mean I see this happening a lot of 20 somethings really crave I live in New York City now and I go to a church I call it a hipster Anglican Church and it's a lot of 2030 somethings a grew up in more of a charismatic expression in their rebellion is now to be in a more traditional type of expression and it's quite beautiful and they they love the old hymns and occasionally though they blend in a new song or you know several new songs but there is a hunger for something that's rooted and planted in in history and tradition so you're right you can't automatically assume that it's just the older folks like this and the younger folks so again I think the worship pastors and worship teams need to prayerfully think about how do we serve our entire congregation. Where you got a new album coming out is through a theme to it or is it just a collection of random thoughts put down on paper and turn it into Christian music Well that's that's a good question you know the random thought part to me over the years you know this is my 14th album with integrity music and every time. Every time I'm you know writing a song and producing it and I'm just asking myself along the way is this something that will help others worship that's that's really the filter for me is this Will this is this introducing vocabulary and is there an inspiring melody that will help others worship and turn their eyes and their hearts and their minds on the Lord and so this album really is you know it's a blend of that but as you just heard and behold him Behold him see me as almost the bookend you know 20 some years ago I wrote open the eyes of my heart Lord I want to see you that's still my prayer I think we all want to see the Lord working in our lives in our relationships and to me this new song behold Him is kind of a continuation of that idea of like Lord I just long to see you I long to be hold who you are and that I would be transformed as I behold you published talking to me on the program last week and now it's that time of year loads of Albeniz heading our way full of Christmas music and a couple play between now and 7 o'clock couple of new ones I have listened to them all some of them salute least and some of them just for Pete's sake want to do both so we'll play the standout ones today starting with us it's a group of played before the cold Libra and the revolving company I suppose you call it of boys aged between 7 and 16 I think 65000000 You Tube hits millions of albums sold around the world and the current album has gone to number one in Japan which is very strange it's a cold Christmas carols with Libra album this is do you hear what I hear. Taken from the new album from Libra Christmas carols with Libra was into to do below I did introduce it as do you hear what I hear and then played a different track my mistake but they're all brilliant on my beautiful harmonies b.b.c. Radio bunch It's 21 minutes past 6 now a guy called Tim Stanley wrote in The Daily Telegraph last month that we should boycott Christmas he said he'd started walking out of shops that were playing Christmas music in November and he said he wanted to stick to the Catholic tradition all of the 12 Days of Christmas where you don't start celebrating it until Christmas Day itself and then you go on for 12 days after that and a lot of people seem to agree with that and now we're in that Christmas month or in Advent So should we embrace Christmas we're doing it too early what should Christians really do to celebrate Christmas and more importantly as far as this conversely. When should they start Graham nickel is the director of affinity gospel churches and partnership and I asked him if we should all start boycotting the festivities asked the manager said in the Telegraph there is the kind of psychological intensity of he's a really reasonable to sort of subject yourself to so much expectation the calm possibly be met in the one day of Christmas Day or the Christmas week or something so I have sympathy with that and with the sort of revulsion at times of some of the Christmas musical are quite like some of it. And the novel idea of not novel so much but unpopular Hi dear of starting the season more Christmas Day and then leading on I think it's unpopular because it's just not where sort of where people's holidays work and everything else I think is not going to work but I am sympathetic to it but I think in the end as as Christians we got to be both sort of principled I'm pragmatic you know the principles are that we that we want to celebrate the birth of Christ and that we think it's theologically. Earth shatteringly significant and and change the whole course of history so we want to celebrate it. Our principles might be that we don't embrace everything that is to do with the Christmas season we don't encourage embrace some of the sort of mythology around there or some of the consumerism around it but we just got to accept that more people coming to church during the Christmas season so let's make use of and telling the good news about Jesus but of course Advent is part of that the advent candle them right lighting a different candle each Undine the lead up to Christmas what should we add on top of that I mean where's the dividing line where it goes too far. I think it's really hard and different families have different traditions and all of those are good they may not be religious they may not point people to Christ particularly by the money just good fun. But I think it trying to redeem as much of the season as you can you know I've got friends and family who who do don't advent calendar with which not this is stuff but also look a key policy of the Bible story cheering that the 24 days leading up to Christmas Day So I think trying to to to dial down a bit some of the excessive consumerism an expectation and dial up the celebration of the birth of Jesus the thinking of how it fits in the big Bible story and how it how it leads us into understanding who Jesus is and why he came and what that means for us Graham Nicol director of affinity gospel church is in partnership chatting about exactly when we should start celebrating the feast of Christmas 25 past 6 we'll have a look in 5 minutes at the front pages of the papers this morning. I Now Matt is giving it well isn't it Pam roads album To God Be The Glory there right well I think what we should do let's have a chat about what's happening on Christmas Day and then we'll get back to the weather thing with be talk of. B.b.c. One this Christmas the into the aisle to sell. The team in an artist's house travel the roof moralism Alaska taking shelter that must be something that isn't done in misery c.p.l. Cities are staggering get a bucket and a chocolate and tending to the safe future for the little. Business Day at 7 on b.b.c. One. And this is b.b.c. Radio barge where the time is exactly hour for past radio weather but the weather for us this morning is b. Tucker morning good morning we've got a fair few showers across parts of the 4 today it's been quite a windy night and those winds continue to be quite a feat through today Westsouthwest the winds gusting 40 miles an hour at times the showers are move through quite quickly they will be heavy with the old rumble of thunder but a good deal of sunshine between them as well and temperatures in reading at around 8 degrees through tonight we keep the risk of one of 2 showers for most places it should be dry of a night with quite a bit of clear sky enough of a breeze to keep things frost free of it will be quite a chilly night temperatures getting down to around 3 degrees tomorrow any isolated showers dying away and there is the risk of a shower tomorrow but most parts will be dry much lighter winds to the best of the sunshine 1st thing it will tend to be more cloud pushing injuring the afternoons or tending the sunshine hazy but I think most of the rain will come later on or even night high 78 degrees you get a full 14 day outlook on our website bbc to forward slash Radia park share thanks very much indeed be let's have a look at the front pages of the newspapers there as you would expect all of them reflecting on the general election Sunday Times where Boris Johnson's next steps after his election are spelt out on the front page with the headline prime minister to wield cabinet the paper claiming Mr Johnson is planning a revolutionary government that will see ministers sacked White told departments abolished civil servants replaced by external experts and they're saying that up to a 3rd of the cabinet for society in the February reshuffle after the shuttle breaks that date. There's also a story at the bottom of the page which is headed Orwell Corgan kept muttering as his read Wall fell what was reaction of the liberty to term. Corben as the result started coming in the picture on the front page of The Sunday Telegraph is of Boris Johnson standing up and looking very excited indeed from a table which seems to have empty pots of pot noodles a kettle a teapot couple of him tea beer bottles obviously taken during election night as election results are coming in and they're headlined P.M.'s Whitehall revolution to guarantee people's breaks that they say that like the Sunday Times is going to be an overhaul of Whitehall mandarins in a big excuse me they say to show the government works for the people it says the people are saying they plan to reform the civil service including a review of hiring and firing process it's Sunday Express Boris I will make it a law to protect the end h.s. The 1st prime minister in history to guarantee annual health spending boost they say Mail on Sunday moment the gamble of bourses life paid off it's that same photograph of him standing next to the kettle and the whisky glasses and beer bottles and it says We've done it 10 pm on Thursday night so it's just as he said the exit poll they're now the observer Incidentally the observer I've got there was ever a magazine this week edited by storms I'm not sure why but I know they headline carbon I take my share of responsibility for this defeat the Labor leader giving an account of the poll failure in the paper he said I'm proud that we won the arguments and there's a comment in sight from the observer Labor looks further away than ever before from delivering for those in most of need of a Labor government Sunday Mirror I'm jazz so sorry this is Jeremy Corbyn apologizing for the 1st time for Labour's election flop he says I'm sorry we came up short I take more responsibility for it Dave. A star on Sunday and do quits untold debate saying he's ready to waltz off strictly he warned bosses he could leave the t.v. Dance contest after more than 15 years and this is just after I want to see who won it just in case any of you have recorded that might be hearing it a little bit later on but I'm not going to be the one to spoil it for you who won last night and what else have we got some of the other front pages different photographs of what was happening in Whitehall at the time all of the election and the Sun reporting some on Sunday Boris Johnson urging the nation to take a well earned break from Breck sit and they welcome his comments with the headline Breck Solent. That's basically what's happening in the papers this morning it's pretty prosy right here Pasha coming up to 25 to 7 and talking of the election a little bit later on we'll be speaking to somebody who stood in the election as a prospective m.p. And for them faith was very important will discuss the place of faith when you're standing as a name probably between 7 o'clock and 8 o'clock. Who Need Lennox did like the singing old Little Town of Bethlehem not trying to show off or do any rock histrionics on it just saying so it was meant to be had I think good on b.b.c. Radio about should I wonder if you can relate to this it's a pursuit is really the selective on the to the why did so hope one of the few I did easily end of December spent with me just looking around the tape I hope that this is but surely soon of soon I will find a way if I want to know for 3 days I find it I need to get some kind of weird backward triangle I want to see but I have to have. Something to give up I'm not going to look for the scissors anymore I'm going to bite you says I don't kid I don't use for my whole life looking for says I'm going to get News this is you think you won you think you've won it is this is some uses for you and says hold off looking for those babies This is my view says that you realize that this is becoming a plastic packaging that closely I think this is this I you come to I guess you have says I. Really had Michael McIntyre there highlighting the struggle we all face every December. When we're wrapping presents Well if you're like me Michael my can tell you big lot to learn but help has happened to Beverly Mundra Smith and Paul Davy are from the bridges church in Newbury they're organizing a big rap and they join me last Sunday to explain how long they've been doing it basically wrapping other people's Christmas presents up for free totally what people can expect this is the 3rd year that we've been doing a wrapping with the love which is our Christians together in the new 3 area and to do you knew very well it's I know or a great boon for people that come along to where is it exactly remind me Paul it's in the center it's in the Ping-Pong shop in the Kennedy Center so. If you want to grab a baton play table tennis was what we're up in your presence for you it's right in the corner there and it's all in there you'll see it was all in the window it's all easy to find that was spoken about over the past couple of years but I have never said to you what time no do you get home many people come along how busy are you know except for so flesh it out a bit with some numbers Beverly or respond Ok so it's mixed and often if the chips busy more people come because they can see there's something going on and they want to be part of a crowd draws a crowd doesn't it so. We open at 1015 we're there till 430 that's the time when people are out shopping and we smile and wave as they go past with their backs and hopefully make a bit of eye contact and they come in and some of them have hold 17 bags of presents that you can. And they stick in the making a big hole so I seriously don't know that's what it's for it's it's great fun actually that the Board of it is when there's nobody there we know present see rather be busy are rather be busy every time yes yes absolutely and you know we'll see 2030 people are dead. But they said they they try to come in lumps and mean what you say so there's busy periods particular around lunch time of course and towards the end of the day. Yeah it's it's 2030 people that I will come in to get their presents wrapped but as you started yesterday goes on to all the 15th which is an example. So when people come do they think oh hang on a minute you get nothing for nothing the some sort of catch here and then that is something that you might hear them say and they may well want to you tonight we've got a little box out for Cap Christians against poverty and they sometimes insist that they give something and we're equally insistent that they don't need to and so that sometimes how it goes but it's not receiving is really the hardest thing people 1st on one and the indescribable on b.b.c. Radio Well what have you learned over the past week have you learned any lessons has anybody change your mind about things maybe the election change your mind about things well we always ask one of our faith leaders to look back on the previous 7 days in an intimate we call what I learned this week so what as Mark Elaine Smith a chaplain at the University of writing learned this week what I've learned this week this week it's been graduations at the university and among the celebrations a poignant moment we do what you on one of his daughters and his parents attended the ceremony in place of his wife Ronnie who died suddenly last week we all knew it would be emotional to Ronnie's other students suspended the stage to receive from the police jobs for the Romneys degrees that incident and then they returned to present it to John. We prepared this little ritual before her and it was poignant and 30 what we not prepared was what happened as the ceremony ended the vice chancellor led the procession down from the stage and as he passed John he paused to shake his hand and say a word and then the rest of the staff in their robes behind him did the same amidst the ceremony it was an intimate human moment later as I walked John and his family to the car park John said to me I feel like I've been given a warm hug by the university. It's been a bruising week politically hasn't now I've wondered being disgusted by a prime minister who can't look at a picture of a child reduced to sleeping on the floor of a hospital I've been astonished at a Labor leader apparently unable to acknowledge the pain of anti semitism and I've been bewildered by Liberal leader who vowed to overrule the threats in referendum vote entirely on the political front and on others I worry that we might increasingly retreat into entrenched positions or into little political echo chambers on social media and never see or touch people who are different the handshake and knowledge and John's grief on Thursday speaks to me of the need to reach out and touch the other to acknowledge their pain to see them as another human being with dignity and respect that's what I've learned this week. And that was Mark Lane's with the Anglican chaplain at the University of Reading b.b.c. Radio box 11 minutes to 7 now we're talking about new albums new Christmas albums I have Christmas love this one I have played the Celtic Woman. Quartet and they can a bit like Leiber and they're a revolving posse of people they state they gold to come back the standards for them the moment Tara Meghan Vireo and and they're just brilliant I love the harmonies they have done the magic of Christmas the have got I think it's come home many 1000000 hits on You Tube They have had number one albums they have the biggest selling international act in America at the moment except for except I could go on and on Suffice to say the magic of Christmas album is beautiful as you here know this is Angels We Have Heard On High. Beautiful the magic of Christmas the new album by Celtic Woman from Angels We Have Heard On High coming up to 5 to 7 and this is Allison cross and I know who holds tomorrow. I don't. To. Live. Alison Krauss b.b.c. Radio Well coming up what's it like standing as a prospective m.p. When religion is very important to you I'm going to talk about the street food service. To. The radio. B.b.c. Radio bunch of the time 7 o'clock here with the b.b.c. News. Jeremy called and has apologized for his part in Labour's crushing defeat at the general election immediately after the vote he faced criticism for not apologising to Labor M.P.'s who'd lost their seats but in a letter published in today's Sunday Mirror that I believe to says he's sorry his policy came up short adding I take my responsibility for it he also expresses regrets in an also go for the observer as a political correspondent in.
