Calmest man in the England camp I think it helps to be the best version so I think that's come about when you bring in a very patient and long knowledge there are. 5 lines to rugby union Weekly. 29 t. The Rugby World Cup. Yes hello welcome along plenty to come here on 5 live Sport with me ceremony over the next hour we will of course discuss Scotland's that crucial match against Japan the showdown on Sunday that we're calling is plus only winner Chris Ashton you're going to show us some love some love that you've been showing for the whole tournament about these Fijians is correct so I knew that again you know just not enough today but it was good to see them showing the better side yeah it definitely was such a game we will talk about the World Cup winning skipper with the Springboks skin stud is here to add Bob I'm sure you've been enjoying South Africa's easy relatively easy progress here and so far well thank you it's great to be here but you know a relatively easy 1st took a drubbing from the old blacks but if you had to go through the stand up and and score some draws and and that's happened in the in the last couple of games I'll be really pleased with with with a last pool game and clinical sort of performance referred least the 1st 15 minutes yeah and we have the Scotland scrum half price with those to Noise and unfortunately you are back home after breaking your foot in the 1st match of the tournament didn't go your way we will check more about that later but on the March this morning where did you watch it how does it feel watching on from home. Thanks for having me. It's a bit of a weird one but I was I was chuffed to see the sort of professional performance we . Saw some game on Sunday for us yeah Chris Where did you watch as how have you been consuming it besides being a podcast Ok so obviously always difficult to watch but. I mean I've been a bit further away I decided to stay home with the family before I mean from Allie from your side must be a lot harder being involved and then being out of it like that. Yeah I think initially when I got back to Scotland it was tough the next morning I didn't really want to watch any games but I guess what's done is done that's my kind of my kind of attitude I'm on the mend now so I'll get behind the boys and a level should not be any was a big ache so when I when I was your age a few years now you know maturing in there I think. I did find it quite hard to watch games especially when England were playing I wanted to be involved so I was a bit different not being picked and being injured. How was it when you sat at home and you're watching the games is it difficult has it been difficult for you. Yeah I'd love to be there I think that's the hard part and I was there and kind of got taken away from me but now now I'm obviously right behind the lads wishing them all the best you know complainers broken for a copy myself up about. Bob in terms of your experiences that watching on from afar did you do you have any similar experiences like that what Chris only much I went through was just thinking of your question it's really tough being out with an injury and hard lines for the night but you know you're all watching on you've seen the the team go through the highs and lows a tremendous finish. For them you know often the squad the culture how good the guys all with each other is determined on what happens on a weekly basis don't you find in a World Cup It's all condensed You know it's not enough there's a long drawn out season you've got to get your highs and lows in and out of the way quite quickly how do you think they'll take this game and then into prep for the weekend saluting I mean just look at our 1st game against Ireland obviously incredibly disappointing but I think the way we've bounced back since then. Has been really. You know this game was always coming against Japan and we've put ourselves in the position where we can still qualify for that last 8 so I think boys will get a good night's sleep tonight and then we're off 4 days off from from that game now so as of tomorrow will be will be focused on and I really from your point of view does go team mates George Horne and Adam Hastings doing so brilliantly What was that Hastings the 2 tries go to being 3 George Warren with 3 what do they bring to this side the potentially maybe people don't quite realize. Oh huge amount of energy George is one of the fittest players on the planet in terms of his his fitness scores and he's always on the inside Sopore is something that's really come into the nines game over the last couple of seasons and he's there without fail every time out and I thought showed such a mature performance you know a lot of people would say oh you're going into the Russia game chase in 4 tries and 5 points would be very easy to go into that just wanted to throw the ball around and by thought is composure and playing the game in the right areas especially enough showed showed showed how much he's grown especially over the last saw a few months without him obviously feign leaving your law at Glasgow. Last season do you think that's had a real good positive effect on him playing in a career more confident at 10 and have in more time to develop Absolutely I think the fact the class go back to. Showed him that sort of belief they had in him and then he you know we had a pretty good season in terms of results and Ok we didn't come away winning anything but making it to the final in the league in the quarter finals of the Champions Cup you know they've gathered an amazing amount of experience in how to run these kind of big games and you know when you get to international level it's all about taking that chance when you know when you get given a and it doesn't matter who it's against you still got to go out there and execute and I think with the pair of them George as well they're extremely confident guys and it was great it's great to see them come upon a show yeah it certainly was wasn't it 61 points to nil knowing tries the 5 points required ahead of this epic showdown that we're all dealing to which upon on Sunday in terms of them as a collective unit as a team did you see any sort of tactical approach shift since that opening game or were they playing with more control or was this perhaps Russia really kind of being at the end of a tough prudent for them. Yeah I don't think you can get away from the fact the you know Russia Russia have been an incredibly physical and poured the heart and soul into into the previous 3 games so there's no doubt that fatigue but I feel the way we kicked in the 1st half showed more of a balance to our game and spoke about a lot the Scotland like to run the ball in light to try and play a fast brand but you can only do that if you go in forward and plan in the Rye areas so I think moving forward especially into the game you know the way we were penned in the corners of mixing up our kicking game was definitely something that will be looking to take forward. And in terms of a psychological boost I suppose from holding opponents opponents to score less I think it's the last 2 for Scotland it brings everyone together potentially as a collective you know and maybe offer is a little bit more insight into you know the work that goes on with the defensive coaches behind the scenes and Bob I suppose as a springbok and identity of your side was always to dominate with the physical and imposing defense I think what was it 6 points conceded in the Rugby World Cup final in 2007 against England Well I tell you it's twofold for me and I was talking about it now but you've hit on a great point 2 games to nil and whatever happens against Japan they've got to hope that Japan are not scoring points you know so so that's vital going into the final game of the knockout stages you know Scotland can get the 4 pointer they've got a bit of points difference if they could you know I know Japan I mean they might find themselves almost topping the group depends on what happens with the weather systems if they play their part but it seriously is they'll be so pleased that they defenses held out and that they work really really hard to you know to stop everybody from from scoring against him sure the attack was one thing and they'll need their 4 tries and we know that but you've also got to do the other the hard yards to get yourself the ball and that starts of the. It was a really good performance I think that's pleasing as well you know Japan home on Sunday in a sort of knock out match you know if 1st 20 minutes the boys can turn up and sort of get them going on the back for us through our defense you know that could be massive for the for the rest of the match. You were there when they went up when they lost and it's obviously you're in the game too what do you think the big change has been in that game and now moving into These are the games I know you have to put it behind him and get on with it but I find it's been such a big mental shift such a hard start to get go in a World Cup But what do you think they've gone and obviously you're in there before you left what was said. It was all happened very quick to be honest Chris we obviously everyone was disappointed in the changeroom you know a performance like that and the opening round push on the back foot straight from the off I think like like was said earlier it's not a long season this well Cup so you have to kind of move on quite quickly. And you know the focus moved to Samoa right how do we get ourselves back on track we still need to win 3 games. From a player's point of view if we'd have played top attentional and lost by 8 points I know that's negative but if we lost by 8 points which Dilip in this same position needing to win these fallen games. You know there was a lot there's a lot written especially back home about our performance which a lot of it was incredibly justified and we were we would incredibly disappointed but yeah turn our attentions to Samoa what do we need to do right we need to win for get 5 points brilliant. We need to win these next 3 games I think the Japan Ireland game obviously made things a little bit more complicated with the result of. But yeah the mind the mindset shifted fairly quickly and you know it was said that we can't take a game to need a reaction we got we had that in the warm up games and then did it again start the World Cup and you know going into World Cup We shouldn't need that. Now you can ask a question as someone who has also been set on my own couch like Chris was saying with kids around watching games I'm going out in 10 days' time just the spirit around you what was it like I mean you know Japan were. Sort of an outlier to win the chance to host this World Cup but did it feel better as a squad. Well as in having them in our poll you know I'm I'm saying you know I didn't. I suppose being bring hosted by them and all the reports are that they've been unbelievable in terms of welcoming everybody but where they're quite as nice to the to their opponents and the pope salute the. Well it's a fantastic country I was saying to Chris. Definitely go back and just visit the place. Culturally it's so different but they could be more welcoming I think we've seen tweets and videos of open training sessions where thousands of people have turned up in learn in different countries national anthems and. Several embraced. It was incredible and it looks like it's continued in the same Whitestar So when I hear that your 1st game back is against the mighty All right potentially a curse. And of. Course is already moved on from there. Looking for the same or. Talking about those than the experience is out there and identity and Japan have never been in this situation before this is such a new thing for all the founders there I think I've heard some report that like there's 129000000 people in the country and I think it was over 30 percent who are watching the last game I'm sure there's going to be loads more watching on Sunday but they've not been in this situation and I Scotland have they've had most when final games back in 2015 in 20072003 I wonder how much that will count to your thought yeah like I said I think. Before before the tournament started obviously we wanted to win all our poll games but the island game 1st up what happens if it went wrong we still need to win the following 3 knowing that this Japan game is probably coming. And there's boys that have been in that situation before. So I think that will help but the fact that we've nailed the last 2 teams in terms of defensively like 0 Center Bob. You know if we can take away their energy at the start of that match them or in the game I feel and all the pressure gets put on to the on to the home side in front of you know their home fans so off I feel like if we can get ourselves into that game you know they'll be massive for us in terms of getting the result I feel it's such a change from the dish pan at the start of this tournament before the tournament started obviously to the Situation Room with Scotland v Japan this weekend what changes Bayne I think it's going to be really close and nothing against Scotland will I can see Japan going all the way in this game. It's going to be it's going to be a massive game. The brand of rugby they've been playing I mean New Zealand have been going well but I wouldn't put they're not far behind in terms of how they've been playing in the kind of physicality they bring in for guys that oversee the not the biggest team go in but just their physicality the speed they're moving the ball that the organization they've got you know all into one of the best teams in the world and they struggle to break them down going to be no different on Sunday that's why I think the balance of our game that's kind of come in the last few is definitely going to be needed you know we're not going to be able to just play from anywhere against these guys we're going to have to work hard and create pressure on them I think one of things I want to toss here Japan of God and actually exact ratio but one of the higher ratios of players who've qualified from outside of Japan into play. For them they've become local heroes they play in the Japanese domestic legal one of the 3 Japanese domestic leagues and you know we've even seen 80 Jones's face all over the posters. The the team itself is completely embraced as as a home team I mean it's an on a culture they have got in behind them do you feel that all the players are playing exactly the same way it's all or nothing I mean you know I I think they're very and Chris makes a great point you know they have you playing against 50000 people or however many people turn up in the in the stadium that aren't wearing kilts that's what you're up against and that'll affect the way the boys prepare for this weekend I'm right. I guess it gets us all it's got to be in your back in mind has no home World Cup going into a game where you've got a chance to make history and make it to the courses for the for the 1st time. However you know these guys are professionals regardless if they play in Japan top legal or out with. A lot of them of a a lot of experience so. I mean I wouldn't know I wouldn't know what it what it's what it's like to be in this home sort of World Cup feeling but I would I would imagine you know the spoke about just going through that process is what did they do to be Ireland they were aggressive off the line they were clinical when they had the ball I feel like if I feel like they'll be thinking if they can do a similar job then they'll have a have a really good chance of making history for themselves one man who's going to be essential to Scotland going to win one weekend is the maverick that is thin Russell I had some experience in the bar and what personality is so laid back I couldn't believe I'd laid back in Los for I don't know if that would have changed because of how these 2. Ornaments gone I'm sure it won't be exactly the same person but you know more than many who will be approaching this game and how important is a in this match yeah he's incredibly important to the team just how it how he runs the team during the week is detail you know is a laid back guy and me on the field sometimes you can look at blood a little blood. A puts in the work in the week. And you know if ever the time that he's serious is come into a game of this of this kind of magnitude and you know he's played in and played in the last World Cup quarter final He's played in some massive games now and him along with the likes of Greg the experience they'll have they'll be driving the team this week. But yes sure we if he can pull something always back pocket on Sunday that gets a 7 points you know I'm sure I'm sure. Has anybody from the squad contacted you or anyone anyone updated more on the weather patterns that we see circling around Japan. Spiked album Hastings this afternoon. Again not something that they're focusing on it's how is their control and the weather. When I was out there for that 1st week we went up to Tokyo and it was meant to be thunderstorms and rain or weaken it the day before ended up being a glorious day and it was glorious All week I think the weather changes there very quickly and it's not something the players at the moment anyway concerned about there's nothing they can do I think they're just going to prep him for this this game and hoping that it goes ahead obviously well enough to throw him under the bus but we're on a on a chat group with a couple the explosion and remittances biggest concern is where he finds an umbrella to get to a pub across the road he's not too worried about about everything else maybe that's because the All Blacks have already qualified. Chris have you ever been hit by more than a typhoon on a pitch you know there's been some monsters the creatures that you don't forget. What I did to the food of my pa I. Get hit by a pie. Not Ingham I think yeah. I see the real world going. On I didn't expect to use a great story as the podcast is a good list a good series I like the one you had a bad i think you were sick the next day the pope and you did well was it a game that you read over the railings and one of the fans wasn't too pleased with your on pitch and takes and I think the next day you had a black Ali recess a good one of the above the next day and the screen came up showing the footage and there was that identifies you more than a block I was 25 stitches and that's a very good part. For concussion of the. In terms of that though you know you say you say that Alyea base is not be in a distraction but we know the world rugby are going to update something at 4 am our time over nice and that will be we think about the England game on Saturday and obviously the typhoon is going to make landfall on Saturday morning whether it will affect the game on Sunday we don't know but. Surely it might be in the players' mind because there is this worst case scenario of a droll of the 2 points for each team and we know that. That's tough because Japan or Lyndon Scotland are old their their opponents in these final games are so important. Yeah obviously it obviously the players Whiteside up but it's going to be in the back of their minds I think read and read and something about the regulations earlier today was that if they can play on the same day a different venue then it goes ahead but partly that's that's not possible at the moment. I think a game of this magnitude with so much on the line for both sides surely you call just go all 00 obviously Japan would go through which they'd be delighted with but I think even if you'd asked them they they'd probably want to. I guess the biplane and I 2 minutes of rugby so if that was the case like. Be extremely disappointed obviously for everyone in Scotland and for the boys. How to chance I guess to make it to that final I got the Scotland to relish plan a typhoon and you know they usually used to use the horizontal right now yeah the same Bring Your Own easy day are. Just a bit of. Ok We'll be talking Arlin them because they're also within that. They have their game against the most on Saturday that would be 24 hours before the Japan Scotland match weather dependent and a bonus point win for our Linde. And they would be guaranteed a quarter final place and I thought today that kind of area has been posting photos from the team's trip to the beach today. How important is time off on tour then what do you do when you're over there you know in the lead up to it. First week I went we were we were based in August Saki actually and. Everyone knows about Hiroshima during World War 2 But there was actually a nuclear bomb that hit Nagasaki and it's probably one of the most interesting things I've ever done is go to got a nuclear bomb museum. Which is quite an airy place you know a museum sort of remember in thousands of people passed away but it was it was the way the Japanese people. Kind of and I fell of felt about it that was that was one was almost they were taking us around this museum and obviously is talking about people from their own country and. But you know there were more than happy to sort of share their insight into it and. How they feel now. That was one of the most fascinating things. That I've done in my life and obviously the 1st week I was there so those. Was pretty good it was interesting I'm sure Bob's tolls were very different on and you know. These days is so full on when you're in camp and you just you do in thinking about nothing else but Ruby when you see a promise you Chris are we used to go by but. Backpacks on walk over them. I completely agree and in fact you know what I think a World Cup. In a way because you're all in one place and there and the matches are you know I'm not going to say easy to get to bed but it's a it's a little bit like having a home to you know let's just say it's the autumn series for England then you've got your own time on one or 2 of the days because you're not travelling the opposition obviously travelling and training it's a trial and what an opportunity to go and see a place like Japan over a World Cup because you're going to have a good day or 2 or a day and a half and you're right it's not like the the prison that is just you know Monday to Saturday afternoon rugby every week you actually get a chance to go out and I had the privilege of spending a bit of time in Japan while I was working in South Africa we have to travel once a quarter and it's one of the most magnificent places I've ever been to and I'm jealous you know and talking about those trips I've been to a couple of those places and seen it it's an incredible country full of incredible people it'll be one of the places on a bucket list for anyone playing modern direct be. Saw this week w p n l about talking about how he's missing in the family because it's such a long way a long way in a long time away from home and I don't think people maybe realize how tight as a group you've come together in the time that. You're away and in which you rely on each other absolutely you know that they become your family for 6 weeks. Every every waking day like an hour you spent with each other you know everyone's been in since June together with $100.00 days we were in before we went to the World Cup in preparation so that they become your family. Get away from rugby with them is you need to do you know the intensity in constant rugby rugby rugby during the week it weighs you down mentally so I think you know going out for golf on your day off going for coffees dinners. Look in looking around new cities it helps build a bond as well you know you guys all know that some of the best ways to to bond with each other is to is to go out for food and and coffees and play cards and. You know it kind of keeps you sane I guess and we believe that great day Dale was the local favorite with the Japanese public and the idea. Mr drag Mr Greg never ever since I was right. There is that. I asked the same question because I wasn't quite sure the tension he got was it was mad or it probably still is now. Basically the last World Cup Japan obviously pulled off that brilliant result against South Africa in the in our poll. 3000000 or something Japanese tuned into that and then Scotland played in the week after where about 30000000 I think it was tuned in to watch Greg was captain of Scotland kick the goal Scott man of the match and his club side was Costa So when they were showing pictures of him he was obviously where in Cherry And why. Strips for Gloucester plan at the time which obviously is the same colors that play in. Love I fell in love with the guy I think they're going to get confused on Sunday. Hopefully it often realize that it's on our side maybe some of the players on the pitch of my character that I work in your favor. Don't take anything I say anything to get through like. Chris what have you been to Japan. I've not so you try to send . Try to do it certainly didn't work. Right out of lot of logic Obs go into it yeah it is just after half past 7 so this is quite a nice juncture for me to rescue this situation because going out in the next half hour we will move on we will talk about that fantastic match between Wales and Fiji Crace if you're still talking to me Get ready to show the love to those for g.m. The Rugby World Cup you let's welcome back to the show would be a sero Kerns all things a Rugby World Cup in this hour and we are chatting with Chris Ashton Bob skins and price as we edge ever closer to the defining matches in the this weekend we will finally know who will be in the quarterfinals Let's talk Wales them because they look set to top their pool after beating Fiji today Warren got inside coming back from 10 down to win 20 knowing points to 17 walks I gave Bob that was some spectacle was an absolutely fantastic game and you know with Fiji You can always rely on them to to have the rez Mattel's but I think they brought a different ages well to that you know there they were. Not completely but more clinical there were defensively more sound I mean we saw a lot of yellow cards I think for yellow cards in total in the game luckily none of them tend to raid this time but some incredible length of the field tries the floods the ability of to get themselves back into the match. And you know a resounding victory for them and at the end of it if you if you'd said to everybody at halftime when Fiji were leading $14.00 to $10.00 I think it was you said wells are going to go away and have a 12 point victory here they wouldn't believe you because Fiji were pumped up they're excited but well done to Wales and Sydney a victory they'll be pleased with. Yeah I think with the euro I gained Fiji lost everyone was disappointed and I expected a lot more as we seemed to do with Fiji before we knew as well that they would have this game in them unfortunately today just wasn't enough but some of the players I mean I was fortunate fortunate enough to play with them a tour along with Josh Ritter so over go and believable try to put 6 flags over charm with him and semi Rod Ryder who has been for me one of the best players at the World Cup as I hoped he would be and gallant after the game just admitted I think he just he was obviously happy to get the win for it mated this some of the players like Josh Adam Josh Adams that on the wing What can you do when you go just to it's over in 55 means a space you'd have to be in a cause of stopping. You know I was going to I was going to ask Chris as a lot of for sale winger How do you stop someone like what can you do other than just shut your eyes and also now it's very it's. Very odd hours don't know I don't know even though as though the bloke is large to rot with muscle and he doesn't even do many ways he can't because he gets too big He's just like a perfect mold of a real player and for him to be on the wing is just unfortunate for a lot lots but it was fortunate for me when I was playing with him he just follow the right people and give you the ball right so I'm I don't know what Josh Adams is meant to do today I think he missed it missed a couple of tackles on him but gallant said off the game I can't fault him it's just sometimes you got to give it your best training most of it interest and then Chris training was very relaxed. Like gentleman's agreement Yeah all was I've always put them in when you do a little breakdown tattling drills or whatever it always picks I mean just because you know they would just gentlemen's agreement already. You know and you spoke about it the importance of Fiji because it's something that we talk at all. All the time in terms of rugby and the talent that they produce and trying to get a set up that would allow them to you know be there week in week out and to have the proper structures put in place to allow them to compete and to have this consistency and I know that Danny leo today the former Samoa International was tweeting saying that he would love to see Fiji that they've outgrown the Pacific nations competition that he would love to see them included in the Rugby Championship or in the 6 Nations that this needs to be the next step for them you know I mean you know and Dan makes a great point because I think you know the sort of the Polynesian islands of have contributed more to rugby off field than than rugby has contributed back to them you know they fell in love with sevens many years ago they fell in love with with Wales and Wales fell in love with them I mean in the in the sixty's they were playing international matches on a on a one off you know sponsored by businessman nude who'd gone and seen these kids play rugby in Seattle wanted to come over and play and you know there was the Drew with wells in the late sixty's an incredible performance they didn't even have formal rugby clubs they had you know nobody was playing for anything any teams a teacher that even recognize now as Chris said the guys come over and wherever they play they dominate you know but also that play such a fantastic style of rugby I mean the crowd were on their on their feet today you know Josh Adams had to score a head trick on the other side for forgetting to say Ok he can do too much because these guys running over him but you know and well done to him because he did he attacked incredibly well but you know it's like running headlong into a herd of elephants I just unbelievably strong and physical and I just love the handling ability does those one handle floods you know putting the ball into space obviously we see it more in sevens but it just sets the fifteen's a lot yeah one thing I would say is just consistency with them. Is so frustrating sometimes to say our 10 year ago our game just for example recently it's so frustrating to see they have that lapse in concentration. And you can be so far the of the way it's just. It's hard to fathom how that can you can have such extremes when Today the so close but 2 weeks ago that can be why we're wired just doesn't make any sense you know I mean there's a committee being put together that's trying to make friends consistent and they've been doing that for a 150 years and yes much more I'm not sure how it's going to happen but it's often amazing that when they do get it right they're almost unstoppable in 4 patches of that game they're what is called tries against the All Blacks against the Springboks against England against anybody you know middle and poor Wales who are who you know up against it because you know they're a man down and running backwards it's just you're right that for the rest of it that they couldn't get enough together to win that game I think it's hard for them you know that structured structured game isn't really in their d.n.a. You know they these guys grow up playing a bare feet you know on the island throwing a ball around the love sevens is the national sport you know all the all these all these games growing up don't really lend themselves to play in a sort of structured 15 v 15 game and there's no chance I would play in a god game. There's no phones is not in the novel that within the from why I ask them they just pick up all about everybody plays replay nowadays and then press No See what I think is this perception isn't there that they're you know they're ferocious on the field but they're quite laid back office and I don't know whether that's just a very lazy stereotype Chris but you know those that you know he's exactly right yeah i've never probably my if you can have a favorite country of people for genes that will allow it the so laid back so kind and always out to help each other I think if you watch one of the videos online wherever they go on the bus they're always singing together like it was a group of people and. I mean for to see them on the really pitch and then. See them often I don't know how to combine to learn any songs from the pick up and then we're going to give us a bar. Chris I'm really sorry I'm absolutely going in on you and Steve if you doubt it because the only above are enduring. I'm sorry I will think of something Bob and I need to both turn on the both of you before that we've 20 minutes left so I've come up with something at prices let's focus a little bit on Wales because they did qualify for the quarter finals with a victory ad met earlier today we have been talking about these huge hits that were made by the Fijians Well listen to the Wales number 8 because he was glad to avoid most of them as a lower moment. To the boys stuff he felt the thrill cycles but we do a lot of respect to the coming to the game on. The go back on the feet and I want to. Say your play offs he thrives on the physical side of it is that one of the hardest you've ever played yet there you are you need to play against some of the awful skills it's all about money seems among the individuals to be able to do without. All stressed out by fast but sometimes. I mean so it was it was going to sell for finals qualification secured town that must be a great feeling of confidence in the squad yeah massively It's what we wanted but we've got another game on Sunday and we want to make it full for the group and. He's doing I was confident. Chris I wonder what you made the of Wales today because they had been so organized and clinical and that in their opening couple of matches and I know it you know some people were worried that if they went down Airlie to Fiji and Fiji maybe open them up early on that would force Wales to to do something that they haven't had to do so foreign aid opened up like that you know I wonder what you made of them today it was a shame to lose down bigger so soon. And I hope he's right because he's essential to this Wales team but I do think like I say them going during 10 No I do think this where I feel like this Wales team is very different I. From where they've been previously previously they might have lost that game and probably would have done but now they have the experience and the personnel to turn it round and they know what they have to do in Test matches like that to get through the game and to come through the bonus point as well. That was a big turning point from that and it just proves to me that they are different you know I think it's a sign of a good side you know when you can come from behind in a match you find different ways to win. You know Fiji or loose physical sides and. 10 points down early doors and they managed to come back in and win it and you know that they didn't lead from from the outset they built pressure and got themselves back into the game so I think it's a sign of a really good good team and they'll be looking to obviously win the last game going into the core finals. I was interested and I got a chance to watch the whole game which I which I enjoyed their guys have been talking about yellow cards and rate cards and stuff and a mention Andrew mittens I mean he cracks me up he jumps on to the water and he reckons I was a red card from Williams for his head on bigger. That's what we're going to make from the referees and I don't like to judge when anyone is injured but I was completely you know almost farcical that he got injured by a zone play and in a difficult match when yellow cards are being handed around the poor fellow would be recovers quickly but it's not good to say but you think there was some effect there from the week before. In terms of the referee and no the head downs head. I mean as a player obviously that's that's down to you these days and I mean if. You should listen to your body knew those protocols in place I mean he obviously thought he was fit to play he passed is tests you know. Maybe more caution from his medical team. I would say but that's that's probably right up there with what you want to see in world rugby anyway I can I ask for people who don't play rugby at the top level what do you do in a head injury protocol what happens. So nowadays if there's suspicion of a loss of consciousness or concussive signs in a match you get removed from the field straight away and there's a protocol to follow just off pitch where you're off a 10 minutes and if you fail that then they're not sure you're you've got to go through the rest of the protocol which which takes a week 6 days I think to get back play and if you pass that then you're allowed back on onto the field and you have to be reassessed post match which you can you can still then fail and then you'd You obviously have to go through the return to play which starts by been symptom free obviously so not feeling nauseous not feeling the. Izzie. And then you move on from there you just you can do a 50 minute jog a 15 minute bike and you get integrated back into training and then lastly contact and then if you feel if you feel fine and you pass the the coke sport test on the computers and pass all the tests then you your bike player think 6 days is the is the limit Well tests. A lot better and they you know your mental capacity in terms of stuff that you do physically how you feel then when you are exert yourself it is a whole range of tests that you will do with somebody monitoring it yeah so coming back it's all done off heart right and then how you so then you go through the symptoms you do if if the minute jog your heart rate up does your head stop stop pounding again do you feel sick if if it's yes then Ok Schieffer the day you go back a step and you and you try again when you feel right. So I think rugby is leading the way in the us. Across the other day about concussion in sport and. With some recent retirements David Denton obviously was a squash player and he retired recently because he's never been able to recover from a concussion and I think in terms of World Sports rugby's rugby is definitely leading the way there's no perfect science to this you know the brain is something that no one really understands and everything's very individual as to how you feel but I feel like rugby's trying the best or lead in the way in terms of trying to minute minimize these injuries and it's great to hear from a current player Leigh you know that the work that's gone into minimizing it and Sydney into into those recovery protocols is going a long way I mean you know the brain is is just a part of the body like a like a muscle like any other injury you. You need the right recovery protocols and I think we've maybe over the years. Probably not lent as much time or effort into into what you absolutely have to do to allow the brain to recover so it's fantastic that a drop it just is really tough on any player because like breaking your foot you know working example right now rolling over on your ankle if you're missing games and you sitting the field you want to be in it but it's better for you if you're not absolutely sorry to jump in there's a guy an American guy at Glasgow now and we actually were having a similar conversation about American football and concussions in American football . He was he was saying how guys try and hide it because of the fact that they might miss games and there's so many players going to jump in and fill your spot the players are hiding these so that they don't miss games and an obviously leads to a more severe concussions and you know if you're on. Back in your day Bobby just called soft and told to get on with it well I avoided tackles my whole career. Would be through that I was sitting on the wing trying to get the ball to you Well I mean Wells missed the he won titles back in Wales for a minute there's no way Bobby can go ahead and win a call for an amazing 31 tackles now you can't put 5 of them were on one try about 2 years either I'm going to remember who you're playing you can see. I mean I saw a world rugby tweeted out about halfway through the game actually. Sidestep goodness you know one of one of the I'm not sure it wasn't 2 so I think he'd already scored and they were saying are you know when I grow up I want to. Read rather rigid I mean unbelievable you know 3 or 4 players 2 sitting on their bum one watching as he goes past it was just amazing footwork from from the big men so not missed tackles with your god when a metre close to make it's awful. Talking about injuries obviously we're going to wait and see then use a diet bigger but Jonathan Davies a jock Adams both came off it knocks they could be dead for the knockout stages to Chris how good is Josh out of yeah he's a great finish but one thing I will say is you always need a good supply and Garth Davis is definitely that he's given him a lot tries he gets a little hell of a lot go forward and makes a lot of breaks for Wales so although Josh is always finishing which he was good with Gareth where Davis is so important for the team and just how they operate Ok Chris Ashton England winger is here with us says it is that World Cup winning skipper with the Springboks Bob skin stud and the Scotland scrum half price is also with let's talk about England we've kind of notionally mentioned about the typhoon that is approaching we're waiting on news on England's match with France which is on Saturday in Yokohama and then Scotland's game against the host Japan that are in doubt in a time for dice is around in the England. As they make their way around Japan what a job Biazon last week Margaret told him the chemist a man in the squad was Courtney Lowell So we sent Tom to speak to the big forward so we had a chat with marrow it last week or about things he's been learning in Japan I asked him which of his England team mates was the most then you came up as the most saying oh so right. Let's go about my life. The stress as possible or how much of that comes from being the dad of 4 young kids because what other people close in parents call exhaustion I think it helps to be go go good to patients so you know I think that's half of the bow when you bring in a kid to stay patient and not not losing your oh. How you staying in touch them over here that your daughter is so old enough to the Face Time I guess is she but the twins are still to Liz. Morris Yes She's just turned 6 almost the birthday yes she's 6 a model boys for so then they get and then the twins to see to get angry when I faced off for whatever reason that bird in the sun so. I don't keep in touch with it so it does change things doesn't they want to become a father being away for this period time yeah it was hard. To see you going to be family for comment to 2 months is so long most in the. Logistics behind trying to get everyone over. The Edge didn't really work out so yeah it was tough but on the par part of the job. Mrs Chua you saw what you still see them playing from them for a long while now so. We're not a young woman most dads when they have young kids become human cloning frames you 6 or 7 so you may be the best human climbing from a child that had sat. On the floor. So that all you. You would that was that he's. Quite quite quite tough man he let that you suffer. Pretty similar. That's wrong quote He's quite right I says Oh my God is and he's quite disparate not sound quite quite disciplined not in a good way. To teach him you know good moments good fundamentals and at the same time a bit of fun and. Strong. Another cliché Parenthood is that once you've been through the exhaustion levels of newborns then any other exhaustion eval just piles in. In comparison to how you like 80 minutes of rugby against if you had to look awful Cade's on your mind I think I definitely do the full kids because I. Just do what they want you know me as only you know breaking anything or you know get into my shop and then I'm on font. It's crazy play and. Say they want to run a part of both pretty girls and. Train in training his pretty pretty tough and. Yeah I mean it's always that way and it was like when you're in the mix it with the kids you are flippant about it. When you're training you've got it which I mean so some of the. Has it made you a better player is that he changes use a man becoming a father as it changes a rugby player as well I think it does it make sure kind of know what's really important you know I mean rugby is obviously very important and this hard job we want to do well but family is the most important so regardless of what happens on the pitch as long as you go or. See Family see the ones that love you that's just something you know he is a laid back man Chris Ashton an amazing wife of the a father. I didn't quite like his answer about finding it wasn't a rugby more tiring than the kids for kids I think his motto was they can do what they want. To do probably not a very silly when I was in camp and he is so laid back where he sets up normally he goes to the shop buys a bin bag I'm not kidding I've been bags full of cereals croissants Shukla anything you can think of he has it all these little French they brings and then he has 3 laptops one i Pod and some headphones. He won't move. Up till he plays different games. 3 laptops and i Pod a big bag full of food had followed that as a license to be away from the kids he wouldn't go for 12 hours. And you are since I've been waiting all this hour to ask you sorry under Murton that's why it was on my mind because I'm I'm intrigued to know Bob skin start who else is on this what's up group that keeps popping up in this conversation oh we can't give it all away but the title was we think we still got to. Go back to Chris and say probably right we've probably done it but unless we entertain ourselves and there are a couple of guys who are doing some work out there in commentry some guys who have coached and played a teacher but the ultimate goal is to do. Do what we would have done at some of the World Cups we've participated in and have a drink in celebration with with the other nations when I get out there we can get together and and you know the weather will have all cleared up by no doubt and it'll be into quote a final and semi final time and we'll be watching all the other guys do the hard work and we'll be able to just sit and watch and judge well I was giving Chris such a tough time I just gave you a tough time there Bob So Greg who's the calmest man in the Scot and. I was right. Or whose car I mean like Chris said Finn is pretty laid back for a guy that for a 10 I guess. He's pretty chilled by Duncan Taylor the spaceman of all realize. He's horrors all know that a boy loves his sleep but the same time does not stress about a thing. He could be on a bus going to train in. And he's forgotten he's forgotten his boots than anyone else would be. Caught tried once but you know what we're going to do ring it up all he's got sized towns this and I think his plan after it was just to buy a camper van and just drive around just just go off the grid. Yeah yeah probably space it to be honest the fact that it's nickname space it kind of says Hill to it's a bit of a space mama. From space back to the Thai food which is just covering everything Chris how disappointing will it be if it does force the England France game to be cancelled and we don't get to see that spectacle Yeah we'll just because they sing the founts Fortunately it won't affect anything and I'm sure they're concentrating on the games that need to be played for it would be nice it always used to seeing them play France especially France in. Such a what the situation there in a vote about boycotting the coaches again it will produce a be interesting to see how they go. But yeah I'm really hopeful over that again. The other games do get to be played I mean are you even a captain of France if you haven't had a boycott against the coach. You know that it's fantastic every will cap Chris can you imagine what would be seen if you're an England player a player from somewhere else if it constantly relieving it against the coach saying now we're not going to do that look thanks for coming we've decided to do this my worry is that every time France do that they end up being a completely different team 5 days later doesn't work for months on end but you know I mean they they lost to New Zealand in New Zealand 98 After boycotting the coaching. And you know the home will come from New Zealand I mean I genuinely believe that is true and the game goes ahead from France could be a completely different team I feel like they've got so much natural ability and scored you know they've got all the resources and. The scary thing is if they just go out and play for themselves like we said Bob they could turn up and you know put in an incredible performance and even against a an England side I think's going pretty well at the moment so they you know they'll be fancying their chances for later in the tournament but I think an unpredictable front tighten up with their backs against the walls are pretty dangerous looking animal it's a dangerous prospect and just just to carry on with with Chris's theme I mean I played against some of those guys dead how terrible is that I mean another only 19 or 18 years old but I mean they've just come on to you know vaca tower and and rock like they're outstanding but Pinto and to Mark I mean these guys are controlling it and they're in the low twenty's you know I mean this could really be the seed of a French team that we watch out for in a in a number of years to come yeah I think the Niners well to ponder he's. Younger than me a nice burst onto the scene and he runs the show for there are no talking to sort of Johnny and Richie Gray Richie graves obviously out to lose his club team and yet says. That is the most talented guy in the to lose squads you know go to or and he's like 23 I think just how you how he runs a game is energy you know skill. Is going to be pretty scary I think in soft 34 years time when those boys are supposed to be peak and kind of Mitoy mid to late twenty's you know absolutely right well we will get an update tomorrow morning here on 5 Live on the b.b.c. Sport website whether that England match against France and of course Scotland's game against Japan on Sunday will go ahead and if it does we will have commentary on 5 Live on Saturday morning and then our lent against Samoa will follow strace after that thank you very much Chris I really much appreciations thank you when do we are with us thank you Ok coming up next on 5 lives for Tonya Arnold will be joined by 2 players who will be taking part in Saturday's Super League Grand Final They will also be joined by a man who has lifted the trophy at on 7 yes I am saying 7 Ok that's pretty phenomenal that is all coming off to the Lakers b.b.c.
