Back to the No one expected it. To man time Zeus punished him by changing him to. His level with each and every time his liver regroup. And again and this went on forever a bit like the experience of Britain. In the u.k. . If some areas had their way. I've instructed the house. The House of Commons tomorrow guess who's back. In. Your. House. To see Charlie's Greenberg but I think you also punting on this I believe just like they describe in their stuff to talk about. That it's. Easy. To write and if you think. The Times to. Try. To say to just be crime neighborhoods are going to be like that back in the Commons businesses started Mr Speaker being speaking people have been speaking. This fear in the chamber worse than any I know in my 22 years in the house both sides passions were inflamed. This. Culture was toxic. Well how important is this week full support let's have a chat with seem to show who is president of conservative young women and he's also a parliamentary candidate for prime. She dislikes very much for being with us. You're very welcome what's the mood like. And so I mean a space coming into party conference will be sort of chatter is quite serious I think people are very much looking forward to it but I what I would say is there is a great deal of disappointment in the fact that I almost feel like free speech is is kind of being stifled for our party I mean when not being allowed to have a party conference with this with our M.P.'s. Feel that you're ation or even for a couple of days well parliament has refused to allow us to apartment Terence to. Sit for for the duration of. The if you will promise to have an unlawfully private would not happened we don't know that day we don't know whether they would. Face it for recess Cheriton and party conference season or not I speculate would probably have been better they might have been minded to be a little bit more more generous on that front but let's talk about the bloody just as she what he took Buddy I could use talking about language I'm just a month of the news that we've just heard there about the g.i. Caucus Foundation would you be somebody you'd be. Think that was a good idea to sign up to a code of conduct for all M.P.'s to sign up to a code of conduct given the language we had in the Commons last week Yeah but what I would say as well is is that we've been hearing this language for pretty long time I mean the last week is not the start of this language we've you know we've had John McDonald How people to lynch estimate but we've had David Lammy Brundle Park City is now sees this is been going on. 3 and a half years Jerry and. Mike Right now I do I know better what I would say is that this is this is been needed for a lot longer than one week and I think that the language within this debate has its And Navy has done anything about it until it's got to the point of what we saw last week. I think that's really disappointing Ok. Let's just talk about the the policies that are going to be put forward before we talk about brags it because I know that the overriding message for the Tory party conference this year is get breaks it done but what are the policies that you all looking forward to hearing. Say their. Base about housing said I'm very excited to hear what policies up forward for that to deal with the fact that there's a lot of young people that still can't get on to the housing ladder that people are stuck in the renting trap and how we how we deal with that and the lack of housing in the places that we need to espouse that be very exciting something he's not yet on the housing that's a very. Stiff. And this is a brilliant discussions around climate change. That there will say some very interesting discussions around how we engage hard to reach faith says Wow And these are people that just don't engage with politics across the board it doesn't matter which parts you're looking at well could I ask you then about women fighters because you all present the conservative young women 2 years ago in that last general election for the 1st time ever a small proportion of women voted Conservative the men because for 60 years women of tended to support the conservatives more than men and as a policy you know come to rely to a certain extent on the women's vote I'm wondering. What you were doing and how likely you feel women will be to support Boris Johnson in a general election. Same I think it's about trying to get more of our young women out there talking to the young women because I think the problem has been that Labor is try to brand us as a party that for young women have tried to Pontus is the party that aren't for women full stop but we are the party that had to pick female partner if. If you're a feminist you should be a conservative you know we believe in equality for all it's matter who you are so I think very much that it's about delivering that message see to the whites if female population this is a policy that works for women seems like a very much good to talk change at the conference scene a show he's president of conservative young women in parliament a candidate for Brant worth an. Opera school correspondent Jonathan Blake is with us actually in person in situ what I would say to what do we owe this on a bill is clearly because the tour thought to go for it Jonathan thanks so much for being with us though this is an extraordinary Tory party conference isn't it I mean given the circumstances that you have somebody who's prime minister but by a tiny tiny vote of of conservative members lost 7 straight fights in Parliament facing misconduct allegation I could go on but we you know we only have to light o'clock this morning and you leave me with nothing to say. So what do you think there are many days where it's extraordinary as you say for all those reasons and more the timing if nothing else you know we're just a few weeks away from the current deadline you have parliament still sitting back down in London so the backdrop of this conference is that M.P.'s could be forced to rush back down to Westminster any moment to take part in parliamentary votes and as well you have a government which is. Hanging on by thread Boris Johnson a prime minister in office but looking increasingly on like he's in control so everything we're going to see and hear over the next few days here in Manchester is is going to look sound and feel like the party is preparing for a general election because they are they need to increase their majority in parliament the prime minister would like that election sooner rather than later but as we've seen the timing of it is beyond his control he hasn't been able to call one on his own terms so it's down to opposition parties to make a move which they're reluctant to do so at the moment well that's what I was going to ask you next so is there that helping hand the same pay of been talking about. Nicholas Sturgeon said at the end of last week that she could possibly get behind Jeremy Colvin How do the numbers stack up what more do you think is going to happen Well there's a bit of posturing and positioning going on here the basic facts are that yes labor the Scottish National Party the Lib Dems and all the other opposition M.P.'s at Westminster would like to get rid of Boris Johnson they would like a general election because that's their way of getting into government and they have that common name they also have the common aim of wanting to delay Bracks it be on the 31st of October to avoid the u.k. Leaving without a deal the trouble is beyond that they don't agree on very much so if you take the devote position of opposition parties going for a no vote of no confidence in a government winning it's you have Jeremy Corbyn almost by default becoming prime minister that's something the Labor Party could obviously live with albeit some of his M.P.'s might even be uncomfortable about it themselves but other opposition parties less keen on that he's too divisive a figure for some so you have the big question of Ok we go for a vote of no confidence when it but then what Yeah some of them said Haven't they about making it make it time limited numbers and that might be be assault towards that but just finally will the 21 turn up the 21 people that lost the party with except the other going to come today I think it's unlikely Philip Hammond road space in the Times yesterday saying that for the 1st time in however many years he's not packing his bags to come to the Conservative Party conference and I think we'll see at the mall stay away frankly because it would be extraordinary having been thrown out of the parliamentary party and had the wit removed in such dramatic fashion that they could come and kind of mingle with the party faithful up here for the conference I mean will be on the lookout for some of them but that they are they're not welcome officially is for us far as the you know the high command concerned but you know if one of one or any of them were to turn up then it could make things. Pretty awkward but maybe some will come and try to get a look at something great to have you on the program on our having you back at 7 o'clock . So we'll talk about the misconduct same fast occasion then and whether or not there are plans going forward touchy get a deal done with European Union thank you it's quarter past 6 right now this is b.b.c. Radio 5 Live on digital b.b.c. Sound this small speaker and some a chef attacker is with us this morning Helen Thomas when it was absolutely going it well it was that was your favorite way of describing when it's you know properly going forward possibly. That's. A neighbour's if you ever actually you know almost say that. It's in my head all the time. I said I have bills to pay. Happening again today basically isn't it yeah yeah yeah it's really really nasty Now the flood the flood warnings from the Environment Agency England and Wales that's been hammered by the rain this morning that they go have it that's as far as I'll go but Scotland and Northern Ireland actually later on this morning is going to be fine I mean Scotland hasn't actually had much rainfall the toll it's been seems to be further south today I think overall we'll call it a mixture of bursts of heavy rain at times of a few glimmers of cry and it's a real sort of change I think changeable day really cool 13 in northern England the south of the country will be more like 16 and then just now the Contin x week Monday all this week Monday in cheese day more the same All right Thomas thank you . I'm just back from a hole in draw Jordan holiday so love in the rain as a forward to the Forest of Dean half marathon this morning remember the 1st our crew thanks very much indeed for the big tool the truck was listening to the program this morning making bonds he's got in touch as he does most weekends Another day another dollar running. Another day in Norwich looking forward to listening to the rest of the show see that I love this weather the clam atmosphere the clean streets the laves the shops some balls and streets of Oxford clear of tourist detritus it's good soup an apple eating weather. There's always a silver lining. If you want to join the 1st crew tell us why you're up with us on godly dark hour as well now 17 minutes past 6 crossed the u.k. This is b.b.c. 5 Live something bright. Casey's Haven School since the summer. I was just sick and I'm never going to talk about being able to tell the 2nd George or Europe why the yes show that everyone's been waiting for has just started well I guess if you George and or your Go on then you have been. It's just all to but you the stadium is absolutely packed with looks a terrific atmosphere in Japan and they've got all you know they'll have school kids groups of people when they loads of families and such like as well and it's control sting that with what we're seeing in the hall for the athletics isn't it because I was that much of light show last night yet of the 100 Bates's which is really impressive really impress so went on for ages kind of weird as well and actually you know some of. The same was saying the athletes were out there for all 3 long and having to watch all of this then there was a spotlight the only law it really in the stadium on each of them and as they were being introduced by intimidating I can imagine maybe when you're preparing for the biggest moment of your fashionable life but then anybody in there to watch the thing I know it was just a real shame because as you say you know the hosts Japan opinion are absolutely incredible Well it's cup filled stadiums but then you completely conscious that see the stadium over in Doha where I've heard that they've actually only sold around 50000 tickets for the whole of the law all get old 10 days but you can fit $40000.00 in that stadium so you know what's happened there would take itself. For efik i was here for Japan didn't yes yes to the way that's. Getting over it with regulators going to the rugby the 2nd before the football a lot of drama in the Premier League yesterday Liverpool kind of scraping through just the guys here for a go to just about kind of a day of goalkeeper How was yesterday wasn't lots of trauma so yeah left to go 5 points clear after just facing chef United will now be called Cook feel for goalkeeper Jean Hennessy fumbled attain shot through his legs and he just put his head in his hands just as awful but then another goalkeeper howler from Hugo to reach I told him did you see that yes I did so he tried to trick a round awnings in his own 6 yard box falling about pass and just got it completely wrong with just having him behind him it was an absolute howler but then Spurs shows really good character despite them being down 10 men for about an hour I think surgery I get sent off to fight back and win that Tehran man should City they beat a brilliant Everton side who if they had been more clinical could have actually won that game today in the Premier League that's just the one game going on to city hosting new call so that's at 430 this focus on father live and then tomorrow it's much united face Also at 8 let's talk about the athletics because I was listening in my kitchen last Christian Coleman winning the 100 meters world title at those World Athletics Championships 20 testimonies pasted Coben from going to take place turning to deny to see one is around the corner and then the momentum taking him jumping and skipping in daylight to sell their credibility is so too good to be true I use it with so much work in it is that it was such a low season that we're making here about a gold medal as a credible Yes So he won that and 9.76 seconds so you same bolts time is $9.00 So he still holds a world record but Coleman is getting close and he was. Fenice in the hates in the semi fantasy Waltz is the cost of his own really big Gotland got him going 2nd then he goes over how does in effort the 6th. Something like that John's going to say how can we all take I thought it seriously anymore when serial drug trade got one finishes 2nd and a guy who missed 3 shuttle test strips away to win by an unprecedented 2 makes this is just laughable he says because Christian Common It's kind of been under that cloud because there was the whole thing where the thirty's are meant to be able to know exactly where you are at any given moment on a any time of day of the year whatever it might be and on 3 occasions. He just wasn't responding he was responding but at the same time the u.s. And they did withdraw the claim so obviously if there was something that then they would have looked into it and then at the same time you know he did avoid the ban and he went on to win the World title Britain's on all hues he finished in 6th in 10.03 and then added to Milli when he got feel for him he just missed out on a place in 100 meter final and it came down to a photo finish missing Michael Jones and say you know it did go he does think that was the fair result but it came down to the smallest amount in our cigar as well as the really nice chap and we're all looking out for Dana Bash Smith she is something else yes she's looking to win have 1st individual gold global medal outdoors in the 100 meter semifinals today she is the triple European champion so she's got loads of confidence going into today's semi final she should have I was watching her in the hates and all the build up and she just won comfortably in 10.96 seconds so yeah all eyes on her this cycling is going on isn't in how she was in swale Dale prep and break 1st be guests here for the world cycling elite men's race which comes through today hope the rain eases a little bit I think I was watching was it the under 23 days I know this is random Yeah I'm not normally watching that much on the to. In t 3 cycling that might surprise you well. I was there because it was a couple of clips and this is sounds bad now but it was a couple of clips of people completely wiping out in the rain these huge puddles they went into and they were not asked a question and then they both got up and got on with it yeah I mean one was like you just fell into a ball yes literally couldn't go any further It was awful I don't know the guy went sliding down the road like he was on a flume it was really like I was in there and it's going to be challenging to then I was going to not I was on more of that which is well you know what was it I was being someone that I didn't go around the puddle it's not as simple as. That you absolutely gulling it. Yeah so that's all happening today and yes so guaranteed almost Yeah he's going he actually was meant to be in the time trial on Wednesday saying he couldn't compete for the win so he's committed to the road race the big finale today the race is 285 kilometers from Leeds so how to get how to get by the way on a great policy for the u.c.i. You see road cycling chum chips throughout this week so yet guarantors he won the Tour de France last year came runner up this year and he says he has no ambition to fight for the rainbow jersey today but that he will fight his team Ben Swift cheat us and others there's nothing quite like when you when you wake up in a b.m.p. You know and where if you might be and you think I helped on the walking down the stair non-negotiable if it's a good one there's going to have you know things on a Cullen really level in life is there anything you can somebody else making it for you. That's just you know you're going to go down you're going to you know exactly what's going to happen you can smell it on the way down. So I'm up for get money out of the not of this water that's hopeless in comparison but when you can talk about the gas a subset of purgatory to go through the last hole right because they were amazing they were absolutely extraordinary Japan of course we're talking about the house of the Rugby World Cup They pulled off one of the biggest upsets. In the event's history as they beat world number 2 ranked Holland 19 to 12 inches aka the referee walked on the set. And Japan have done exactly what they did to this great box 4 years ago this has been the most remarkable performance by Japan a fraud put a lackluster Arash team kind of no complaints such thoughts on at 5 o 5 that all of a trench it is with us it was a Japanese rugby acts but all the thanks so much for being with us it is fair to say. Supporters that are normally fairly reserved they went absolutely bonkers was the atmosphere like that. Oh it was just incredible. You remember the 2015 win against South African union rights to have similar scenes like against arguably a team of dare I say slightly better caliber in South Africa in 2015 beating the number 2 wrong side in the world on your home turf in front of 48000 supporters. It was just a party atmosphere just 3 minutes ago when they got the interception when. About 70 meters down the length of the pitch I just never seen any scenes like that inside a Japanese venue in my life and I'm just up on their feet there were people in tears they were grown men and women in tears high 5 each other it was just a terrific terrific day for the sport and for Japanese right because of how I mean from a playing point of view they were completely dominant they were totally fairness and sometimes they just played Ireland to a standstill. Yes they didn't it was just a sensation performance when Island got these 2 early tries through the hype I think that the floodgates would open. A marquee match for Japan's number here is just so pivotal to their performances in their plays he went off after 30 minutes replaced by Japan's Captain Michael Leach. So that point we were really thinking there could be 3040 point win silent and it could be a very long evening and she's doing. But alas I think to make the most of their time in the opposition asked and they were just outstanding in defense I think they made about 90 percent tackles compared islands I think 80 something percent and they were just absolutely incredible the Misses they made after contact and I mean it's really hard to pick out individual for Mrs Just team they defend it so well they kept the ball they just kept the ball away from Ireland they didn't Ireland a single point in the 2nd half which is just quite remarkable when you think. It is Gotland we could go here you do you know I'd sort of thing out of her by the way I saw a thing a video of them coming off after they've gone home for the kind of initial training on the pitch and then they came back off again and they all left the pitch as one do you know what I mean they were all holding on to each other and they moved as a Unix and then that was just to juxtapose with the Irish players coming off individually now you know to be honest that's what most teams would do isn't it was hardly an illustration of the Irish team not be together but it gave a clear insight into the togetherness and the sort of single purpose I suppose of that Japanese side. Absolutely there's no personalities or individuals who want to stand out from those inside those Japanese team is wanting so when they leave the pitch together before they go into the dressing room just before the game they will put one hand in front of the shoulders of the players in front of them it's the same for the someone else the Japanese keeper of the side they've adopted that in the last 2 years as they make their way to the dressing room just to get that real sense of unity and togetherness and they're in that for one think really reflected on the pitch yesterday especially in the 2nd half as I said it was just a fantastic fantastic showing one of the when the best performances Japanese represent witness after last week's very dissimilar and. Wait for showing it's Russia which I think caused a bit of concern among some Japanese supporters but they're more than made up for that now with our last night's performance and she's a worker just very briefly we see Europe wide playing right now all of that and huge turnout for that as there has been for everything really that's happened so what does it mean for the tournament now that Japan have had this stonking when the game started. I think it does wonders for the tournament and the level of local support here in Japan we look back at 2015 as I said what that did for Japanese right behavior it really elevated it and use their own Japanese teaching. People as your page in the 2016 look at South Africa they became celebrities and they say many appearances on the media on the radio and t.v. And I think just simply because there are so many more people watching the game this time around it was on prime time television in Japan and I'm yet to see the official numbers come 3 black speck to make and there is numbers are there any increase for their games against them are in Scotland nation the tournament that you mention about the local support here in Japan is being sensational so that you are much what you are by much just now in Q make I was lucky enough to go there in the week so this is a very like who town just north of Tokyo where they're not used to welcoming as many for I guess is obviously talking about how Marys. Just the level of support there and how happy Japanese. Syrians are it's the past there's not there's barely a spare see I would have to let you go over it's been a pleasure talking to thank you very much for the insight thank you enjoy the rest of the tournament over tranche of Japanese rugby experts lucky devil. During those long we go on and on too long as we feel like we get better and more cohesive and we're pretty good stuff in the 1st game and it's going to tough a strong team but we had some close battles over recent years and we were lucky enough to get out for one last autumn elsewhere in Wales as group Uruguay are currently taking on Georgia sorrow chit is watching this one yes so watching pulled the head George a 5 year ago and now 15 minutes on the Rocket an early tried by to do a full the Georgians who are also powering through with their scrum are going to need a 100 k.g. But in us of more incredible than months yeah I mean the school twice in 3 minutes so this is 1st of principle out of the living much you know it isn't it's on loan isn't. That he got sent off for diving so it's a 2nd yellow card look at the school 3 goals in 1925 minutes into he's already scored 2 goals in 46 planes from a maybe there where they've already made an impact it's one item maybe one to score another goal for 1870 minutes and that it would be the same if he had a you know it's it there's something in that. Well that I wonder if there has been a player almost saying he's going to go on to have this got a fortnight comes or goes going it's a my I was it has been all my life that was a can. It's a flaw for your club just a disaster even if they were meant to be right and then went on to be brilliant because they. Can see it's the. Only way conceded 2 penalties in 4 games. Compared to Siri in $160.00 League appearance is. Going the other way lately the other way. Right let's get a weather forecast with this one and. This is the Radio 5 Live on the b.b.c. Sound Sunday breakfast and it's 630 I thank you for being with us is cerebral Chris will but I'm with you until 8 o'clock this morning we're off early for the rugby Wales against Australia now the broadcasting regulator Ofcom says it will look into the round about an argument Chatty the b.b.c. Is being criticised for holding a complaint against the Breakfast presenter who spoke about her experiences of racism when discussing tweets by President Trump in July with her present sedan Warka just amazed that it's the president and. It's the most that was the that was the most telling quote from a that's not common but who said it but she said I've been told to go home many times yes go back to our many times in my life which are now being told by the man who's sitting in the Oval Office every bit and every time I have been held as a woman of color to go home go back to where I came film that was imbedded in racism now I'm not accusing anyone of anything but there is you know what certain faces me and you still tell that I did to get this you had a corridor Lee. You know. You're sitting in not giving an opinion but how do you feel then as somebody who's been told that before when you hear that from us when you hear from have city furious and I can imagine that you don't see people in this country will be feeling absolutely furious that a man in that position feels it's Ok to skirt the lines with using language like that does that then you feel that his use of that because that's the point I was trying to make then legitimizes other people to use and just as our guest was saying there it's it it's not it feels like a thought out strategy and strengthen his position it's not enough to do it just to get tension. In a responsible position so there was one complaint as a result of that which led to the investigation the B.B.C.'s director of editorial policy David Jordan explained why the complaint was partially up held the issue in which the finding was made was not responding to the clearly racist comment or responding personally would like as a person of color to have a remark of that nature directed against yourself the issue is about when she went on further to discuss President Trump himself what his motivations were for that and that reached our impartiality requirements because our audience is should not be able to tell from the b.b.c. Output the personal opinions of our journalists on News and Current Affairs presenters all matters of public policy political industrial controversy this morning the Sunday Times is reporting that some b.b.c. Staff presenters have been prevented from signing a petition in support of not government charity that's according to Trevor Phillips we can speak to the chair of index on censorship and former head of the Equality and Human Rights Commission Good morning to you Trevor Good morning Chris Botti and thanks for getting up early for us on this Sunday morning we appreciate it. What's your assessment of how the b.b.c. Has managed this festival. Pretty rubbish pretty don't you think I mean the fundamental point here is that. It's quite possible that the b.b.c. And I know I've known David Jordan a very long time very fine journalist maybe the B.B.C.'s dealt with it in a sort of perfect b. Or critic manner they followed all the rules and so on but of course what happened is that they've arrived at the conclusion which completely undermines the B.B.C.'s values completely crushes the idea of its journalists being professionals who offer their insight and experience on any given story and to be actually honest it's made them look ridiculous on top of that we now have this. This apparent. Decisional practice by managers to warn staff not to get involved in this and I think frankly what I'd say to the b.b.c. To general and leaders is put away the g j c b stop digging go back think about this decision and if what you have to say is look we've now had a look at the editorial guidelines and they don't quite work in the era of a more diverse b.b.c. And we're going to think about them again we're going to satisfy this particular decision nobody is going to criticize them and if they do that yeah I mean just look at it if you're saying the the fact that they've kind of followed things by the book is The problem I just wonder how we avoid that because I'm looking at Emily make the presenter she's in a lot of the papers this morning she addressed the issue at a book festival and she's kind of saying what you're saying she said the complaints department is ended up looking as if they had have their heads down in this Dickensian ledger of for and against all good and bad but you know if that's the system that's kind of how complaints departments work isn't it you know they go by the rules in front of them. But leadership also works in a different way. Leadership says Yeah I think what. The precise rules. That the spreadsheet sets out deliver it's not what we do as a corporation that is not what we're for that is not what journalism is for and what leaders do is say I'm going to set aside the rules because they clearly are not working according to our basic values now I think the fundamental problem here is the b.b.c. Is an organization is generally speaking pretty terrified of anything to do with race and what happens is when something like this comes up its leaders get paralyzed and instead of behaving in a normal grown up way they hope that what will happen is if they offer perfect homework then nobody's going to criticize them well that clearly isn't going to work here and what they really need to do is to say let's think about what is the right thing for the corporation what is the right thing for the B.B.C.'s values because. It's being presented as a race issue I think what is much more important here is the impact this will have on the B.B.C.'s journalism now them and chatty. Has made a comment gave us some insight as a professional journalist I think by the way one of the things about the b.b.c. Response which is even more lamentable is that they sort of slightly patronized by saying well you know we're very you know we really like the fact that this brown woman has shared her feelings with us as though it's basically a sort of emotional response that isn't what she was doing what she's doing is what any professional journalist does what for example or clues but does every night in the week she looks reports the facts and then says on the basis of her accumulated knowledge this is what I think by. Stops on or Jeremy Kolb in is actually didn't get in this have a more I mean there was a more personal element inherently to that wasn't there though because because of her experience as a woman of color and though you know by injecting that into the news agenda that's where the b.b.c. Obviously had the problem with it and those views he might say look it's still a personal view as to the motivation of Donald Trump in all of this and they'll say that that does doesn't have a place in news I wonder if it would have been different if they a been a program that didn't have such a kind of lights nature to it breakfast television a more kind of conversational nature what if they had been on something like the Today programme for example well I think you have to be careful here. If I may say so when you say this is a thing of a personal nature that's kind of like saying that the fact that you for example. If it were different topic if you were to say that somebody was reporting on the rape and it was a woman reporter and she reported the case the details of the case in the same way as everybody male or female would do but then as a reporter would not normally do in certain circumstances she might then say and I've talked to the family of the victim and I've talked to the victim herself and mind her protection or my understanding of where she is on this topic is this the truth of the matter is her experience as a woman will be completely different to that of a man who's reporting the same thing and she will bring a different perspective now that is not a personal opinion that is experience and in the same way as I was on the Today programme and I pointed out that Nick Robinson. Whose good friends no never never shall I say to remind us that he's a monk Union and he has knowledge reflects just about being a militant which let's face it Justin could never bring to that program that's what journalism is about all right Trevor thank you thanks very much Dade freshets on the Phillips is the chair of index on censureship at 647 now you might have heard in the last couple of days about a new treatment which is extending the life of patients with advanced skin cancer not around 2000 deaths in the u.k. Every trial shot at the half of the patients on combination immunotherapy are now surviving for at least 5 yes and that was unheard of just a few years ago so what is it and why is it being described as a game changer Professor Allan Meltzer is an expert in Amine a therapy at the Institute for Cancer Research and he's also an oncologist thank you very much for being with us just to explain the basics to start with if you could what is immunotherapy Well well thank you very much for having me it's really is a completely new type of cancer treatment so you know for many many years we've had chemotherapy and radiotherapy to treat cancers but it means therapy drugs which really work in an entirely different way in the sense that they don't directly kill cancer cells what they are designed to do is to activate your right I mean system to help clear cut says and therefore to help keep them under control and improve both quality and quantity of life people so it really is a game changer in that sense of harnessing your own it mean system to attack. It entirely different weights and the other type of treatment that we've had over the Is and these deadly skin cancers Alan they were considered on treatable just a decade to a guy 10 years ago only one in 20 people would would would live for. 5 years but now more than half of people now live for least 5 yeas that is just an extraordinary jump forward isn't it Well absolutely it is and I think well you know like 10 years doesn't feel like a very long time in terms of the rate and the extent that this sort of success has changed is quite extraordinary So when I started treating this type of skin cancer myself it was just before this sort of revelation and I don't think it's too much to call it out so we did have old fashioned chemotherapy but to be honest it really did very very little for a very very few people and then these new types of treatment came on the boat and. It is completely changed what we are able to offer patients and what they can you know potentially expect and hope for from that treatment and all the melanoma was the 1st of them and if you like is I think remains the sort of poster child to get me to therapy in the sense that they were really no treatments and now there are a whole range of possible options with significant success in the therapy has grown in other types of cancer which again we're really had very few options and very poor treatment and it's and it is an entirely different world we now look at I should stress it's not the case that the meta therapy is successful for all people and all types of cancer there is a very long way to go but I think this particular report at this trial is if you like front runner the sorts of success that we're now starting to see in the growing number of cancers and helping a growing number of people fast and I see is neat because as well you can tell we tell where the money guys and big pharma are investing massively in it twice as many cancer Meena therapies now development as they were in testing 2 years ago just very briefly Alan can it be available that to everybody not you know in terms of where they live a century old but you know it is money ever an object is a pie. As to the type of cancer that you have what I think that's always a tricky question of money unfortunately is always that object that I think for example for this type of treatment. That is absolute gets a little only n.h.s. And it's nice approved except. You're quite right farmer is putting a lot of money and there is a concern I think that ironically this could be going to fall so we don't still understand nearly enough about why this doesn't work for everybody and how we can do better so there's a long waits a guy but it's a very exciting time in this type of cancer research and treatment great talking to thank you very much Alan professional 900 francs no he's an expert you mean a therapy Institute for Cancer talk until unconscious and at 651 now this is a fine line breakfast I'm going to travel new so each. 6 north bound what's happening there junction 21 for Winston the exit slip road is closed because of flooding is expected to remain closed across this morning as for the post are great thank you for the tents lots of very very active people look at it doesn't matter about the weather up early for a wet and windy marathon in Cambridge thinking I should have stayed in bed and says fill in days thank you for that Stephen Oakes we're just going to run the marathon for the out some in society say some on a summer's day and I hope halls of my 60th birthday celebrations that might make your 1st our crew mentions thank you for us they've been good luck and check these implants he praised on the other side of the coin all of the weather outside but lovely here in my kitchen while I'm preparing bacon sandwiches for the arrival of 6 mates for the wilds Australia match a spot whiles as in the animal sound on the feeds over the other. If you want to join not only got a few minutes to do. The single phrase. Sit next to. The Russia. Right. On. Your Go former one we've got Wales against Australia and the rugby from 8 o'clock commentary I 45 of the Rugby World Cup there in Japan and off the the Russian grown prairie we've got less the city versus Newcastle United live for you on 5 live at 430 and then 606 at 630 Robbie Savage and Emma Saunders are going to be talking about the World Athletics champs a little bit later on Christian Coleman winning the 100 meters Dana Bash a Smith is going to be in action most of focus a little bit on the lack of people who have been actually watching the thing despite the incredible light show Plus did you see earlier this week the 16 year old Swedish climate change activist got a ton bug to say to get his tongue book as a made up his claim that speed was also to the al this very good I'm glad we have made a passionate speech to the u.n. Calling out world leaders for their lack of action on climate change has been turned into a Swedish death metal track by a pro too early for this and it by huge Sheba Joam mollusk. Just imagine how angry I looked. This music it just intensifies what was already deep pain 10. She says from now on but I'll go from now on I will be doing Death Metal only tweeted better to yes that's one full of these I can I can open my ears to pretty much anything and everything but death metal is where I struggle I have to say away from Slayer is the example I want to try to watch because there's a thought a conduit and not do it if you're a cipher tell me what I'm missing on I 5 o 5 I was 5 minutes to say on that gas can help not 11 conservative Abhay favorable Valley area death metal fans morning well I think breaking news this morning gratitude sense of humor Yeah. Sorry kids have to prosecute for install say which is why we have the pledge of Nigel's company actually in the studio today and the government have announced 13000000000 in spending over the next decade on hospital improvements but of course the threat of competence in Westminster next week by opposition parties is hanging on 10 of his quote the sword of Damocles knowledge leavens how much attention he paying to the fight and I comfort it's potentially happening. Very much so because we have the extraordinary vote last week in Parliament that basically said we've all had our party conferences but we're not allowing you to have the free rein of the conference recess so we're now having to work around all of that none of us really know what's coming forward I mean we're all looking forward to the party congress will always do we love Manchester and so it's going to be absolutely certain a great success a number of announcements will be made and their respective volved the be called The Dead parliament the zombie Parliament and I now call it the spiteful parliament in trying to prevent ministers and M.P.'s from being freely able to come and participate in the conference it's going to. Come from it is protocol of wood so it's a little bit rich to say well we're not being allowed to say and do things that. We always have the conference recesses we've had them for years. And so for Parliament to say well we've all had hours now you can't have yours but it's not going to stop us I mean we have all been told that if anything does happen you know if the speaker tears up the rule book or something else happens that there is a vote of confidence then you'll see of course every member of parliament winging their way back to Westminster in order to support that but I think the other I suppose extraordinary news is that was the Scott Nance and the Labor Party seem to have agreed now that they want some form of vote in confidence which leads to the suspicion that the Labor Party have agreed that the Scot Nats can have another referendum on independence that's number one that of course the Lib Dems are not keen on putting Jeremy Corbyn to number 10 and he's clearly insisting that it's his right that if it's not going to be Boris Johnson and they look for a remarkably sometimes called a government of national unity which is ridiculous really it's a government of remain as then of course Jeremy Corby wants 1st bite but it would be just as legitimate as having sad because this is what I'm trying to get an impression from me about it big just as legitimate as what is happening currently in this country because you have your prime minister who is elected on no point No 2 percent of the population he will 7 straight fights in Westminster he's facing a misconduct investigation he unlawfully suspended parliament gave deaf advice to the Queen I mean can you ever in your lifetime remember going to a party conference under the auspices of the leader like this you've missed a few things out but we only have limited time. And a private list all of what you just said has been thrown at him is 11 points ahead in the polls and in fact of the last 40 polls the conservatives have consecutively been ahead in all of them and that more people now would prefer to see a no deal Bracks it than Jeremy Corbett as prime minister will he get a deal before I'm hoping he will you know just asked if that's what he's determined to do I mean the. If you don't mind if he doesn't read well I prefer that he does get Briggs it is the sort of Tonto I know that he breaks it right what get Briggs it right get it done get it right for the 17400000 people and I think that's why Boris is so popular is because he's actually fighting on behalf of the 7400000 people fighting on behalf of democracy against what is a room in Parliament very briefly Nigel if he can't get a deal there are concerns that he will try and circumvent the Ban Act Do you think he well I honestly don't know he was asked what the missing jigsaw was in a meeting of the 122 committee quite rightly you know when you're playing 3 dimensional poker which he is you know going to show your cards to anyone I think it would be absolutely right that he keeps his cards very close to his chest but yes I don't write the little well no I don't but what he has done well here I'll change that will he's put up with the shenanigans of a speaker that's torn up the rulebook we've had Parliament legislating as if they were the government without any scrutiny whatsoever so if anybody's piece on the receiving information out against it's been published on some nice taffy in the studio lovely to be here I have a good conference going to be Australia yeah I'm going to show you I well know I voted Sadly I ring I'll be there in spirit at 5. And I will know I will I will have . The news and money play nearly anyone and this c.b.c. Radio 5 Live the 7 o'clock on 5 live a very good morning to get some type right 1st with Chris Paul button in Samara for Good morning our top story the Conservative Party conference gets underway with a promise to spend big on hospitals opposition parties trying to bring down the government this week that will look at what looks like I'm not a hectic few political days ahead full survivor scared to go 5 points clear and it's as you've been hearing Wells Vale Straley and the Rugby World Cup state to decide who will top pulled a Plus the search for the person genuinely enjoying the incessant rain I know it's the time of year for this. It seems to have happened quite specifically has and it's gone from me I just don't write to bed last last Saturday we were on the beach and then one week later you guys in this country you know if it's you we'd love to hear from you. This is b.b.c. 5 live on the news headlines the Tory party conference will open in Manchester later with a promise to get breaks it done but Boris Johnson will also try to focus on investment in schools police and the n.h.s. Seen a shell's the president of conservative young women as its base housing said I'm very excited to hear what policies up forward fit that to deal with the fact that there's a lot of young people that still can't get onto the housing ladder and the lack of housing in the places that we need to espouse something he's not yet on housing that's a very exciting to hear about what they can stamp out that they promised as already announced plans to spend 13000000000 pounds on 40 hospital projects in England over the next decade it comes as opposition parties are warning a vote of no confidence in his government could be held next week the foundation is calling for all political parties to agree to a code of conduct to help protect and pace the charity was set up in memory of the politician who was killed in 2016 it says intimidation is a cross policy issue which threatens the diversity of democracy in the u.k. . There are almost 30 flood warnings in place across England and Wales heavy rains causing travel disruption with some roads closed and Rail service has cancelled to crash in Mexico City has killed at least 2 people it's thought a carriage be riled at a popular theme park. And there KUSA children to be included in conversations about organ donations and h.s. Blood and transplants says that over the last 5 years more than 40 children in need of a heart have died waiting for one. Talking about playing 3 dimensional poker you can you hear them to this suggestion of 3 dimensional chess a lot planned a very crafty game a 3 dimensional chess now it's 3 dimensional poker but when you're playing these games it's a 3 dimensional anyone know what is only when you're in chess it's generally unless you're playing online it's kind of in a 3 day life is 3 dimensional isn't it am I missing something I think I tend to think that we probably by the thaw probably anyway right now it's a go yes for Rugby World Cup coverage starts as Wales and Australia go head to head to decide who will finish top of cold say there is common fog of Sport coming up also lots of drama in the Premier League yesterday with Liverpool boss young club surviving a scarce saying they were deserved winners at Sheffield United despite needing a howler from goalkeeper Dean Henderson to win one nil they now go 5 points clear. Sorry 3 dimensional chess is a chess variant that uses multiple boards representing different levels.
