One of the conservatives expected to vote against the government has just announced she will not stand in the next election and here is what she said earlier on the Today programme Well I've sent her a letter to the prime minister saying that I will not be standing as a conservative candidate at the next election why because. I want to focus on making a difference on the ground on social mobility and I believe that I can do that better outside Parliament than inside palm and we've seen palm and gridlocked on bricks that I will continue to represent my community that heavily voted to remain on bricks and I've no doubt the the person following me is M.P. For plenty will also represent our community well just before rights I spoke to the foreign secretary Dominic Robb and asked him about unity in the Conservative party breaks it's been a challenging issue on all sides I mean the Labor Party have you turned in a countless times liberal Democrats not content to say they won't respect the 1st referendum and said in vans that the 2nd referendum that they want they wouldn't respect result that went against the wishes of the Lib Dems themselves I think this is been a challenging issue but all you're doing is highlighting why it's so important to get out of this paralyzing rut and that's what the strategy the prime minister will deliver. And Labor's Shami Chakrabarti told me how they will vote if a motion for a general election is tabled and of course we are at some point but there is this there is sequencing that's incredibly important and you remember the outrage last week with Boris Johnson down Parliament to stop M.P.'s getting in his way and what we need to do 1st as a matter of urgency today and tomorrow is is to let the cast of Commons have its voice again to legislate to prevent Britain crashing out without a deal without the House of Commons permission. Some might say a little bit of obfuscation maybe I just mean suggested on social media I see this morning and in some other outlets that they are just worried that they will lose that election because clearly that would be the numbers in the House of Commons 2 thirds the required amount that would mean that general election would go ahead on October the 14th when it come to the social media on a force that was something I would you. There's a good techs here about she which caught my eye is it from a dissolution conservative votes or from Leicester it says I'm not sure how a general election will help because the issue isn't a partisan party issue because it clearly goes across party divides so a general election won't really help because it looks like no party will have a sufficient majority to push through any agenda the country needs certainty it says the general election just adds to that that it does fit it does conclude by saying that said I'm not sure what will help and this I suppose is the she was you know we had this morning about working out all the the twists and turns a thing that might happen tomorrow the next day what direction we might find ourselves going off in and it is just absolutely impossible it it's like it's like trying to sort of carry a tray so laden with all kinds of different possibilities and make sense of it all I really nobody knows which way it's going to go that's. Coming and we want to hear from 8505. 080859 or 9693 newspapers this morning many of them are kind of already out of date but we just have to look through them to see what the general tenor of them is the song PM warns rebels don't force U.K. Into an election Boris snaps is how it puts it Financial Times Johnson's threaten snap election if Tory rebels refuse to back him that motion they start debating that today there will be a 3 hour debate and then a vote and we'll see if the Rebel Alliance as they are being called managed to get that through but one of the most delightful aspects of politics over the last few days. Has been the dog Number 10 Downing Street yes this is Dylan a little rest for Wales who's moved in really cute I would always say that they particularly picked Dylan because apparently Dylan had a jaw issue. Which is why why it being abandoned and they've chosen and sort of moved in I know it's lovely actually people do say is it is it a cynical attempt to make us all safer. And take our eye off the bricks it ball for a few hours. It's not like an adult because I think he wants to keep people's eyes on the bricks at ball on the phone about Dylan is it's not just that he was abandoned he was a result of one of these dreadful Poppy farms which are to be banned under Lucy's law and the people who are bringing him to Downing Street yesterday had big Lucy's law T. Shirts on the loose his lawyer Lucy herself was a puppy who was born in one of those dreadful dreadful places and on the dog front the front of the mirror which is what reminded me of it is. Election with a picture of a dog there on the Telegraph I don't want an election you don't want an election but it's planned for October 14th and a half page picture of Boris Johnson the social media is going crazy Give us a few more yeah and in fads and the roads has been she's been doorstep this morning because we were talking about diesel lections and she'd said it was wrong I think we have some very valid colleagues she said this morning he made very different choices I think we should consider carefully the consequences of dividing the party but I do support the prime minister in his commitment and this government's commitment to getting a deal with the E.U. I think sometimes what's getting lost is the focus that we do have as a government in getting that deal on the progress that we're making I'm not sure we're actually I'm not sure that focuses in particular what our views are there's another solution says this text so much on social media this morning by why do you keep texting I keep tweeting use the heights hash tag. Chris in Bristol says there is another solution for opponents of no deal a vote of note but you've got to follow this one very carefully a vote of no confidence followed by a unity government with a new leader that all can accept this unity government could extend Article 50 and even contemplate another referendum this seems really considered that the problem with that one of course is that it was talked about a couple of weeks ago and nobody could decide who they would agree what So that always was picked up. The park as well was no we are. Going to speak to political correspondent in just a moment he's a man in much the now there's no sense in any way whatsoever that we were falling when we were talking about the slights of. The dog is actually central to this whole situation so I don't want people to be drawn into that particular idea that we were. Anyway it's coming up. This is B.B.C. Radio 5 Live on digital B.B.C. Sound it's small speak it's got the weather morning Elizabeth my leg Good morning and it's a lot milder this morning from a service than it was this time yesterday that's because there's a lot more cloud around the south westerly wind isn't quite as strong as it was yesterday. It's fairly similar the brain into the north west northwest in Scotland and Northern Ireland the northwest England. And. The Morning. Visibility. Around this. Bright weather with. Decent sunshine today temperatures today around. London 23 degrees Celsius and it's going to start I think for the southeast and tomorrow morning across the U.K. This is. Why breakfast. Then right POLITICAL CORRESPONDENT Good morning there. A young Tory advisor was marched out of Downing Street at gunpoint wasn't quite the figure of speech I think there's. A description I took it as a figure of speech at the time people are saying you know we shouldn't we should have taken it literally but anyway those are the sorts of. Passions are flying around the Smalling Now what's Labor's line going to be because she also said I asked I said look if this is $100.00 you want to play this general election it's your chance is what Jeremy Corbyn has been calling for over the last you know the Libyan leader as long as he's been leader has been calling for and she said Well. It's all about sequencing and it's all about numbers and she said we might not have the numbers of what you mean you might not have the numbers what's going on what is the thing about conditions in a suggesting that somehow they would authorize a general election if the government could guarantee that there wouldn't be no deal breaker which of course the government will never do what's going on I mean Labor are totally torn because as you say Nikki they have been calling for so long for a general election that's been the crux of Jeremy Corbin's pitch as he has opposed the Says Give us a general election let us sort this out instead but you know labor are worried about. Opening the loser Gen well going to come to that opening the door to a general election that could put skin C.V. Be off the brakes a day now look we know that number 10 will be telling in peace tomorrow if we get to this point that the general election would be on October the 14th there are people within the opposition parties that don't trust anybody a number 10 and think that they might try and then hold that election instead after breakfast has actually happened so it would be taking parliament off the pitch altogether for the next few weeks but you know of course there are Labor M.P.'s that look at the opinion polls too and they see them selves far behind because at this point and will be very reluctant to hold a general to go for a general election and I think Labor M.P.'s are completely split we know there are Labor M.P. That are one Jeremy Corbyn to be prime minister now these are the arguments swirling around the Labor Party right now but at some point in the next 24 hours or so the Shadow Cabinet will have to make a decision and Jeremy will have to make a decision about what they do if and when Boris Johnson comes to them with a motion in the Commons tomorrow and says let's have a general election what does Jeremy called WANT. I think he would be more inclined to go for the election but listening to people like his stammer over the weekend I thought he was very cool on the idea because I think he buys the argument Tony Blair was making yesterday that this is an elephant trap for labor that it's too tempting to walk into this and I think. We don't know Nicky but I think my hunch at the moment is that Jeremy Corbyn could be pulled back from agreeing to a general election if the ask is tomorrow but it's a massive call for labor to make what is going to happen today. Well the House of Commons will assemble this afternoon we don't know what business will be happening before M.P.'s then make their application for this emergency debate but once that gets going they'll be 3 hours of that debate if the speaker grants it and then they'll be a vote and we don't know the time is that it could be early evening I think today that vote is one of the biggest that we've seen for years and that is the moment that if Tory M.P.'s vote with the opposition to pass that emergency legislation to seize control of the order paper to push through and try and close off a no deal BRACKS It Number 10 has said any Tory M.P. Involved in that effort will have the whip withdrawn they will not be able to stand in the next general election so a once in a career moment for all those Tory M.P.'s and also one of the numbers 2015 it's not America have to stop people standing or is that down to the local Conservative Association it is actually I think in the gift of the local association and you saw that he was recently lost as a Philip Hammond wasn't his seat was was recent and so but nevertheless look having the whip taken away is a massive thing to do I mean John Major didn't even do that through all those you know grinding months of Maastricht rebellion Eventually he did take it away from 9 and then reinstated it when he changed his mind shortly afterwards but it's a huge thing to do but it shows how. This is a level now of threat against Tory M.P.'s which is almost I think unprecedented coming from Number 10 some may wobble Some might but we're talking about pretty hard and long in the tooth grandees here as well people like Ken Clarke. You know his career he's had a very long career is on every job there is about the up and comings and there are some up and come out I spoke to Sam Jima just now. 4243 was up and coming stood for the leadership back in June briefly you know he knows now that by voting against his own government today his career is over but he said that this is this is becoming unrecognizable party to me in just 2 months it's become a no deal party and there's no room for people like me is the argument he's making Cameron line isn't it you are the future once. These people are talking about their own political death warrants and they are little I mean you know these are M.P.'s having to make judgments about their careers and their families and their mortgages and their futures and people like Sam Jima that is wrestling in vying with what he thinks is in you know the national interest going to speak to him a little bit later on some dream so just quickly what about the Lib Dems were they on this will they start think Tom breaker was the wrong time for an election but they're doing quite well in the polls it's confusing it is give you your tone break said that they would not vote for a general election but you're right Nikki I mean if you then think how does this has election play out if it actually happened we don't know because BRACKS It has you know splintered the 2 main parties. What's going to happen with Tory held seats in the Southwest where their main vote is pretty strong was going to happen in labor leave seats in the Midlands where the breaks apart is not going to has we just it's almost impossible to predict with any certainty whatsoever how that general election might might unfold and right our political correspondent wasn't your fault you weren't here when we thought you were going to be here because you're being pulled in every direction this morning but it's really. Great to hear your analysis thank you 18 right let's pause just for a few moments on a Westminster on elections on Brick sit and talk about the World Athletics Championships because the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team will be announced a bit later today to athletes who don't have to sort of bite their nails through that big announcement he already assured of their place on the plane to Doha the record breaking world record breaking race will khatam balls with hello in the studio it is a morning and Abigail Arizona is here as well long jumper Abigail Hello good morning so I mean that the obvious sort of standard 1st question on a day like today is about you really excited but you've both got particular reasons to be really excited about this one because Tom for you. You know we've got to talk about the disqualification I'm afraid which I know I know is a horrible place to start but but this is a way to you know to kind of put those demons to rest I suppose. Yeah that was probably the lowest point of of my athletics career was 2 years ago on the mile in front of about 20000 people leaving about how much it's going disqualified so I learn a lot from then I want to come off so a meadow kind of that was a real bounce back from from that I really wanted to just come back out there and perform and so this is going to be quite different from competing in a lot of London to competing in the middle of the desert at night so it's going to be bizarre and really exciting for me because I think it's just a completely new challenge that any athlete ever experience Yeah and speaking of what I mean it's also quite the word for it but Abigail you you retire it 3 years ago and yet here you are all in the Team G.B. Track so you getting ready to go you know you should be at home listening to the radio finding out who else was going. Well I probably wouldn't be up this early normally. But yeah I retired in 2016 because I ruptured an Achilles tendon and I realized oh my goodness I've had 3 successive surgeries I've had multiple. Injuries I feel like what is the point I'm trying so hard and I'm saying nervous adults and now to come back a couple of years later and to have so much success it's like that break was something that was really needed Yeah and I think I probably wouldn't have achieved this level of success if I hadn't taken that step back because my love for the school my love for what I was studying had completely dissipated and it's just come back in can put a lot of force right now it is an impressive comeback because even as you said they're up to the kill easy to Chris just mouse how I mean that's a biggie that's not a you know a little twisted knee that's a huge thing to come back from yeah I mean it is it's one of those things that people I'm going to play an aqua It's called a Korea and an injury but also I think is athletes we have to have that mindset that we can come back from anything that anything is possible you know this Cindy feely has just run 1285 in the 100 meter hurdles 2 days ago I think and so she's come back from an Achilles injury that she suffered 2 years ago so it is possible and I think that's part of my story as well helping others to believe that whatever they're facing they can overcome it if they have enough passion and they have a good team around them the world record holder of the mile is that right yes the race walking but you you know up there in the modest 20 little bit further the short distances This is the 3 my favorite Well I've done real. Now I've just looked at your times feel 5 K. You do 18 minutes 28 walking Yes I mean that's faster than I can run it. Was so I had to go into race walking rather than running because you obviously quick I mean when I was about 4 years old I said to my parents I want to walk for my country and that's what I want to do that's a joke he took me deadly serious so I. Mostly regret want to be footballers and that sort of thing but I never thought spore would be an option for me and so I just joined a local flex club because my parents wanted me to keep fit and I tried to walk in alongside. Running long long jump cross-country tried everything I was really bad at everything so. There was no moment in my life where I decided I'm going to be an athlete or I want to try and do this as I've built to be an insurance athlete and I enjoyed the running and I enjoyed race walking as well and and suddenly I realized I could beat people running when I was walking and thankfully doors started opening for me and Rachel burden took up walking football you know solar a walking lark I want to ask you about Christian Coleman the U.S. Sprinter so the news broke overnight that he will be eligible to run at the World Championships he's 100 meters fastest man in the world this year now it's a technicality so he missed 3 Tests in a year which is a one year ban but it's been successfully argued that one of those tests should be moved to the start of that testing quarter 2 months before the actual date that he was tested it's all very confusing to read about it on the B.B.C. Sport website but this is a bad look for the sport in the month of the world championship sure yes yet again we find ourselves in this situation and we just don't help myself and hopefully this loophole will be closed after this to try and explain how how we fill in our anti doping forms were tested when we have to give an hour slot every single day of the year 365 days a year and so we have to say where we're going to be for one hour and if you're not there then you know that counts as a missed test now every 3 months you have to fill in or at the end of every 3 months have to fill in the next 3 months now it's very hard to predict where you're going to be so you can change it up to hours beforehand but that's how these quarters work but it is your job as I said yeah of course it is I mean it's incredibly invasive it's incredibly kind of you're walking a tightrope because this morning I was staying in a hotel you've got to remember to do it for example but I know friends who have missed one test in their entire career and you know it's hard to do that when people come and test you they knock on your door and they don't go away you know they don't want you to miss a test and accidents. And you forget to change and you're not there so I can understand why you might miss one in 12 months I've never missed it and I've been on the testing pole nearly half a decade so to miss 3 within 12 months. At a nurse Lask some clumsy business. Good enough for me. Thank you both good luck where you could see this morning and thanks for coming in and yellow Salut foods are the World Athletics Championships as Tom world record breaking race walker Abigail Arizona is well a long jumper a right is a bottle of brightnesses a 25 this is B.B.C. Radio 5 Live on digital B.B.C. Sound it's small speak up some of my photos go to travel updates the latest on the M 6 it's still closed this is a massive closure because of a lorry which caught fire in Staffordshire so junction 14 to junction 16 northbound to junction 13 at Stafford south is having a knock on effect to all of the a road surrounding it is well through stuff and also people diverting through stock as well in the 834 in the 500 it's about that when mine is going to be lunchtime before they reopen any lanes because the damage to the road surface the end 9 also closed in full on the southbound side junction 7 that can add House maybe 876 to junction 6 at Grange mouth roundabout the end 90 was also closed in Persia that was on the northbound side junction 7 at Milner thought to junction. Radio 5 Live so very little on the B.B.C. Sounds quite widespread 1st morning a break 1st Nicky is in Westminster this morning I'm here in the studio and soul food at now mention this in the news a little earlier and thought it was worth looking into in a bit more detail food experts warning about the dangers associating this is because a 17 year old suffered irreparable site loss after living on a diet of chips and crisps while Rebecca McManaman is a consultant dietician spokesperson for the British Dietetic Association Hello Rebecca good morning it is one of those stories that I think. Really catches people's attention because we all know. By an effects children somebody who is a a fussy eater who doesn't eat you know the whole range of things maybe doesn't eat fruit and vege and then to hear of a an outcome like this I think really makes people sit up and take notice doesn't it absolutely is quite as shocking headline but it's important to recognise that the child involved had a very restrictive diet they were not eating any fruit and vegetables from spin reported and also things like the meat intake was really limited to processed meat and they say it's an extreme case for a day but But what is it of that diet that actually leads to to the site loss in this case so in this case they didn't have enough that. And also other nutrients like copper for example and this caused nerve damage over time and it is a shame because it seems in this particular case it was quite a long time before they nutritional deficiencies recognised and even though once it was recognised managed to hold any further damage it is unfortunately not able to be rich Yeah I mean I think. It particularly speaks to a lot of people who spends their time trying as parents to get kids to eat different things wheat which is often I mean it's not just a question of saying you fruit and vege don't eat this do eat that it can be incredibly difficult to try sometimes and get a protesting child to eat what you want them to eat it can be a real challenge of I and it's working with a child is able and wants to wait and keep on trying so it might be 304050 times before a child well except a new faith it is you're right it's very trying to systems can pay off but I think we need to recognise in this. A typical instance that it wasn't a case of what we might Cove fussy ting or a child being picky it's it was actually diagnosed as an eating disorder because the child was so of 2 particular foods like fruits and vegetables but you're right it is it is a challenge for all parents but we've got to remember particularly its one children a very young that they may be being exposed to free vegetables when they're very small and for children from when that's what 6 months up to 5 years of age that they're actually not able to get the Pittman's they can from that diet because that tummies is so small say we do recommend for multi vitamins for children from 6 months up to when they reach their 5th birthday after that we're hoping that that diet diverse enough to get everything that made but if there are concerns then it is important that you speak to a health care professional Yeah I mean this is it sounds like is a question of of just not dismissing it as you were saying Mary's as simply full seating absolutely that said and and as they say from this particular case me no it wasn't just certain things that they would date beyond that of somebody who will say oh I don't like Brussels sprouts Oh I don't like this but it was not just one or 2 vegetables this it seems as though it was a you know pits and a fashion and it was linked to they the texture of fates which we see not just in this particular eating disorder but it can happen food with children with other conditions for example with autism or children that need to have restrictive diets because they have analogies so it really highlights the importance of getting referred to by just a dietician who can look into Di and say whether a child needs the support with with what they're eating or where they do need supplements Yeah thank you Rebecca Rebecca McManaman who's a from the British Dietetic Association a consultant dieting. Breakfast just got half past 8 now on digital B.B.C. Sounds must be coming this is B.B.C. In the southeast all say for the Channel Islands and in deepish Shetland sunny for much of the day to us west of pacing cases a bit of a misty look at the clouds right here by the end of the day top temperatures today . 18 degrees in Cardiff Belfast Birmingham and 19 degrees London 23 Celsius this is B.B.C. Radio 5 live over a little on the B.B.C. Sounds quite widespread 1st I was going to speak to the choir Selwood from the conservatives who is the leader at Westminster Let's 1st of all. So this former chancellor Philip Hammond one of the Tory M.P.'s who faces the threat of being diesel acted if he rebels against the government over its bricks it plans he's told the B.B.C. He plans to stand again and would fight the government if they tried to kick him out that would certainly be the fight of a lifetime if they tried to a legal fight presumably possibly So you would you would you would fight. Some of my daily show that you are a conservative candidate a lot a lot of muscle a lot of my colleagues have come under immense pressure some of them have responded to that pressure by saying enough I'm going that is not going to be my probably hasn't just Inglis's my party I've been a member of this party for 45 years I am going to defend my party against incomers interests who are trying to turn it from a broad church into a narrow faction people who are at the heart of this government who probably not even members of the Conservative Party. He's got a point doesn't he I absolutely agree with Philip Hammond I think this the entry point and income of people who aren't even members of the conservative yes this man Dominic Cummings clearly Johnson's brain Well that's a separate discussion from what Phillip and others have potentially been threatened with I don't know the details myself I says I think it's important his words that the party remains a broad church that we aren't particularly focused we need M.P.'s or potential M.P.'s to go to come in knowing that there can be a competition of ideas that you can stand for things not just of your party. Constituency but also your own personal values and you shouldn't have the threats of the whip. If you don't actually vied by the government clearly there has to be discipline there must be if you want to be in government itself but I think this is a sets a very very worrying president and I hope that discussions can we have to reconcile this particular issue about how one wing of your party sliced off onto the more moderate wing the more one nation which people have said that you are a member of but you're sticking to your guns and you're on this program not so long ago right here in the tent I don't know if you remember we had a very nice conversation about it. And you said you were firmly against no deal but now you seem to be toeing the line you're mixing things up and then also looking at the tactics that have been employed by this particular group which have not been part of myself we're missing a major aspect of this debate which is what was chief over the summer to everybody surprise the prime minister came back from Berlin and Paris with an opportunity doors were open to say yes you can revisit the withdrawal agreement he will then present his ideas on the 14th of October through a Queen's speech and then they will then be presented to the European summit that is when we know whether we can actually leave the European Union with a deal what I'm concerned about is that this extra time that being asked for him. I posed this question indeed to him as well what would you actually use it for I'm deeply frustrated with my colleagues who have been unwilling to move from their very wedded position about where they see Britain going within the European Union I voted remain but I actually voted for the draw agreement 3 times because I know that we need clarity stability some form of continuity I will not get my perfect and this talk now of us running around no deal which absolutely yes I sense sympathize for but then each all these people in this big group of no deal support then have very different agendas of what they want to pursue in this time period that they get. Added to that which are not part of the executive are not beholden to the prime minister but we now see that if you continue with this we will then trigger potentially general elections take place on the 14th of October it well look I think that 1st and foremost what I'm worried about is the threat of no deal at the end of October because. I don't like to buy a sign but what about no deal and the impact that will have on our business community the implantable have in our communities and I think there's a a sense of responsibility that we've got to move that cliff edge at the end of October and that's why parliamentarians are coming together and I pay credit to all those of work in a consensual basis to try and get to this position today and Tobias is right that our different positions of people have I would far rather see that we didn't have brakes all together have been cleared not from day one I would argue I have a mandate for that because the people of Scotland voted to remain we are in an impasse. We've we've got a situation I firmly believe that there is no such thing as it could break so I still believe that the best thing to do is to put this back to the people in a referendum let them know have their say given we do that what breaks it is likely to do. It today parliament is going to speak with a very clear voice we are in a constitutional crisis it is regrettable to say the least that the prime minister has sought to put all Parliament he has tried to shut down parliaments of a. To form a view innocent and to pass legislation that hasn't got away with it because we don't know that we can do this in the time available this week I would simply say to the prime minister 7 recognise that we do live in a parliamentary democracy if Parliament expresses a clear position over the course of the next coming days if we pass legislation then the government has to accept that it doesn't it's going to be a deal so how do you stop no deal well firstly what you're doing now why does it have to happen now why can't you then have that debate after the 17th of October when they will be clarity as to whether we're heading towards no deal or not and if I can just come back on the program and pieces Well I'd be delighted to be with you just say we shouldn't Perogue Parliament we should be back in there but you and I both know in fact you've articulated it here just now that you are still wedded to a particular around come and again what is frustrating is that this actual debate about where we go with the BRICS it is divided into 2 we're not even talking about the new trade relationship which is what actually your concerned about whether in the Customs Union or indeed the single market that's actually part to all I want to do is get through into the transition period itself and I know if you force us back the parliamentarians the legislative back into parliament we would still come out with no resolution to change here is the executive offering something different something new to do with the backstop with that is going to be the change will be something he has great take up well yes that's what I can offer that's why David Frost is visiting the opinion in twice and then I'm going. To finish that. Is when he'll present his views in the Queen's speech leading up to that summit the critical summit with the E.U. On the 17th that's one will know whether we're heading to no deal or that we've got something we can finally draw a line on and resolve this is you know I think the thing to you know I've got great respect for you as an individual as a publication and you're right I think there's actually very little that separates us but the 2 matters if we put you're asking for we don't have very little time. We needed to take the time to pass legislation I just cannot see how we're going to get into a situation over the 30 days that America gave to to Boris to find a resolution to the backstop is not going to happen Michel Barnier has made very clear that are real risks that we face in the legislation that we're bringing forward there still is a space for the government to bring forward a deal because the extension to the article 50 process is only cricket only the 19th of October so there's still a space for conservative colleagues of yours that want to give the government that option it is still there but what we're saying is that we have to live with that cliff edge it would be irresponsible of parliamentarians didn't take responsibility of parliamentarians and say this again is the fact that we have not done what the nation has been wanting us to do his deeply frustrated and actually move away from positions on Bracks it and come out with a compromise that the nation is calling for and plays are always willing to compromise we know you voted against with it 3 times because it was taking us so the single market customs union and we made it you know one of the things but we've had a minority government since 2017 in Scotland we have minority governments that's the way the Parliament works and we have to reach across party the past is the past what happened happened but at no point could we reach an agreement with the reason me because she wouldn't allow us to do that that's fine but in the situation that OK but the consequence also of what's happening now and has been very clear to made by Number 10 is that. This is a tactical decision of going through a one day legislative change is that it will trigger a general election to take place on the 14th of October now you have to ask ourselves whether you really want that I do OK in which case I would and that is a fair assessment and part of me looking at the nation and what's best for the nation also agrees with you because ultimately when Britain when Parliament sorry cannot decide when and when the government cannot govern because doesn't have the numbers what we do in this country press the reset button allow the people of Britain so there's every opportunity if you where. The government will pursue no deal and you say that. Can be very damaging for the country I don't agree with this . Pursuit of no deal as an ambition the sole ambition what's happened is and it's been the tactic of this government is to say that we are resolved to leave on the 31st of October with you agree or disagree with that they are far more resolute interest may ever was I was very concerned that we were drifting in the last administration she had no command over those people that she needed to persuade the brakes it is the D.P. Want on board anymore we have 25 Labor M.P.'s that actually want to get a deal they they represent facing seats 25 that you've got the D.P. To get back on board which I think they are and then you've got Jacob a smug leader of the house you've got Boris Johnson both BRACKS It is able to I think convince more of those people who failed to vote for the previous prime minister it can be done the mathematics that you've been happening on the 17th of also. When if you look at the position of Scotland is very clear that Scotland has it in mean country probably become even more so we could have all of us can see the pools of support for the S.N.P. Has risen if it is the case that we're going to be driven out on a new deal type basis by Boris Johnson by a new government and the people of Scotland are going to have to deserve that right to have their say and put what they want and it may be that if you deliver Breck said to bias that that's going to be at the cost of the ME You mentioned you mentioned I want to talk about the Conservative M.P.'s who risk facing the selection and throwing out the party. To people across the house appraising is a decent human being and a very good minister he said in this tweet Jacob asks M.P.'s to support the government in its negotiations I did I voted for the conclusions of the negotiations brought to parliament in which old agreement Jacob his friends and current cabinet members did not why am I having loyally supported not being threatened and not them he nearly sums up the dilemma that we face the government the make up of government cabinet ministers awful of people that rebelled in some case. Number of times. We cannot have a situation whereby this threat this sort of Damocles is held over those people who simply refuse. To support the government in this case I agree that there must be discipline itself but this is quite a draconian move and I personally am against it and what about you know you've been working with some of these people have us Dominic Grieve one of he just passed a few moments ago it was a cheery hello as if you're in the same party I think what's happened over the course of the last few weeks to countless of party a number of us of work together very well and there has been a great spirit in the discussions have taken place I'm fearful for what's happening in that but Mr Colburn on top of that great spirit. Yes he has I mean there are things that we've agreed with over the course of the last few weeks we are facing a crisis we're all involved in this will feel passionately but this device is exactly the same as I'm part of what about the Conservative Party is the vote leave campaign is no taken over the government it's not Tobias's party it's not that excellent news for you in Scotland isn't it. I from a past a point of view don't take any any any credit from that at all I don't think it helps politics political kind of felt well I mean I think is the case at Scotland's on its way to the pens I just think there's a reality of that but to see that the Conservative Party being taken over by the BRICS a Tears which is what. Is something that causes me deep concern and my heart was to Dominic and to Tobias because they have a they have a fight for the sort of their party which is taking place through this thank you both very much indeed so what's your plan for today what you. Know we need to focus on. I mean what was missing or here I remember very very boring the one piece of the jigsaw that is preventing us from going through is to do with an old one backstop is the fact that you have different customs and different regulatory compliance issues on the border itself and what I'm really saddened to see is the reasons an in-depth debate about looking at resolving how a company which is beneath of $83.00. Told how a large complex company with your busy supply lines can actually be a spectrum advances that then allows you to be resolved we do that we get across the line and I'm afraid there's an absolute you know a dearth of discussion over the aspect of it the detail of sorting out that particular issue which would actually get us broaches across the line it's not going to final answer thank you very much indeed for thank you Tobias Elwood So the government says it will seek a general election if that happens if if we have this motion going through the list of possibilities is growing by the general election stopping no deal leaving without a deal allowing the prime minister time to negotiate a deal. Voted no confidence in the government may allow an opposition government a government of national unity or whatever a 2nd referendum to even revoke Article 50 we want to hear from you oh it's 085909693 Texas 85058 Iran social media B.B.C. 5 Live as well that's going to be your call between 9 and 10 o'clock this morning. It's the best justice I spawn by breakfast after now and then you'll cool bricks what do you want next it was a huge long list of possibilities then he wrote out for you why do you do you fall into any of those was the one that wasn't even mentioned that you would prefer Alan's in South and morning Allan good morning so for you it's another referendum that passed the best way to solve this well. What next step I can accept. The last referendum because of the way. Because 29100000000. The electorate didn't vote. Subjects it only 17400000. Conceded defeat before the polls closed so many remind voters so they didn't need to pop and I think you should have been prosecuted for that because it was just a deliberate. Attempt to mislead everybody. How the legislation stands on that is an insult you know he's broken any law by saying that particularly but it so another referendum for you. So you won't know if he's going say fit for us into the referendum because he said before the general election because Labor still a bit muddy on this question of the 2nd referendum is still a choice largely between a lie a lie. Prexy and or Tory Prexy which has been the position for the past 3 years. He's literacy that you need Alan Robeson whole as well not real but for you it's kind of the opposite where you just want out with or without a deal to be gone as are still Boris Johnson near stood by which window without a referendum has been held and you can't you can't hold another referendum when you have been stuck so long the eve already had and the argument stoppages head. Against the validity of it then just Buddhists you don't you don't go of what was a vote state law on the number of people didn't vote that's OK So that. He does a lot of these these I mean with 3 years all now as Mickey was saying earlier we're looking at possibly a little election we said I'm just saying you have a feel but he's a bit of a Groundhog Day that we have the same arguments over and over again in day we do in the early went to resolve them just to stick by the referendum original that we've had and get out and then if April changed their mind then let them start a campaign against rejoinder to rejoin it how do you feel about an action role but by the way when you say with or without a deal would an election before the 31st of all how about if you're saying no. Shame no do you own even who do you fall apart from the Liberal Democrats how do you feel or where there are clear policy from labor conservatives as passes on who to vote for well that is. Because the question that can give you a headache I thank you Robyn hall Alan in South Bend we're outside the brights it bubble Listening to do you get in touch what do you want to happen next and a whole list of possibilities a 5 by 5 might. B.B.C. 5 Live Well you can cool as well of course 5909693 that kind of related. Is often when we talk about bricks that we talk about the impact on the the financial markets around the world the pound. Against the dollar Downey's back Hello Was will say specifically to do with there is a again just a whole range of things no easy specifically the uncertainty about what he's going on in politics and anything which suggests that there may be a general election that there might not be a deal done with regard to breaks it is affecting the currency markets the British pound felt to be worth less than $1.20 alone last seen at the start of January 27 tane A has still been fooling will it full any further well let's talk to Jane Foley senior currency strategist at Rabbi a bank Hi Jane good morning why ease the one dollar 20 month scene is significant but it's a psychological level so is it a level in the sand or not has gone this morning but of course when we hit a sort of levels we are getting to quite a historically significant level so we've just gone past the level that we lost so in in January 27th Teena again was another psychological level and we're getting to wards levels that if we start to hit below it. There's not a lot in sight until we look at that 1985 which is around about 107 levels and historically the levels that we're seeing hit this this morning and that we're coming close to could really give us a Oliva where with no place to go in and terms of currency trading until we get that margin $85.00 level 6 a huge amount of of politics critical events happiness we cannot really will guide us as to whether or not we recover or whether we so what does it mean if we get to that level that you'll talking about will currency markets rebound well whether or not they rebound pens and whether or not particular uncertainty is taken out of the equation their currencies are a very good gauge of political uncertainty they don't like play. Certainty Sterling doesn't like the fact that there could be a no deal breaker because of the uncertainties that would create and carries also don't like general elections because of the political uncertainty and also left wing government so a korban government for instance because it's far left at that is considered to be unfriendly investor unfriendly So this is a source of conditions that investors are worried about today but also the economy is slowing yesterday we had bad news on the manufacturing sector at this morning where dissipated that we might have bad news on the construction sector so the U.K. Economy is slowing shrunk and the economy shrunk in the last quarter and the market is trying to work out that's going to happen again this quarter OK Well plenty to be watching and I'm going to keep an eye on it all day here on 5 Live Thank you Jane Foley senior currency strategist at rob a bank I thank you got to wonder at the end of the summer if you've been away maybe if you've seen the impact on the currency markets if that perhaps changes your opinion about what should happen next the list of possibilities as Nicky was describing it is growing by the hour how do we predict what is likely to happen next if it is almost impossible to know where this is going to go it is the out going to be a full day of twists and turns and entry and all kinds of things that you'll be able to follow of course on 5 Live throughout the day but the next step Nikki or in Westminster what is outside the bubble next. On inside the tent inside the bubble and we're trying to get outside the bubble time we're trying to find. Out how we burst this bubble and basically. Toil and trouble. 563 I'm pleased. Without an agreement next month Dominic Robb is the foreign secretary we've got a great chance our best chance in my view in 3 years of getting an acceptable deal the one hand brake is this lingering sense in Brussels that the shenanigans in Parliament might lead to consolation it breaks it so my message to all M.P.'s cryptically conservative ones is we've got to keep our promises give the prime minister the room the space the top. To consolidate the progress that we've made and get an acceptable deal or as Johnson would need 2 thirds of M.P.'s to back a snap general election before calling on his labor SHADOW ATTORNEY GENERAL Shami Chakrabarti we live for the moment of a general election because we want to close down food banks and make sure that we end austerity in Britain but we know that a no deal crushing out of the European Union will be disastrous for the most vulnerable in our society so working across the House of Commons to avoid that at least 5 people are being killed in the Bahamas as hurricane Dorian continues to hit the Caribbean country is the 2nd strongest Atlantica hurricane on wreck or 13000 homes affair damaged or destroyed is claimed that most schools in England are setting up food banks to help feed their people's families the national governance associations annual survey of governors found that 8 percent of schools now have one up from 7 percent last year. 9 people are still missing after a boat was destroyed by far off the coast of California yesterday 25 bodies have been found 5 crew members escaped and tests have found a 17 year old went blind after living mostly on chips and crisps doctors say the boy had severe vitamin deficiencies and money tradition damage as that to a warning from experts about the dangers of eating that's the latest news this morning Chris as a sports Steve Smith is back for Australia for the 4th Ashes Test which starts tomorrow at Old Trafford he's fit again after concussion and in for the dropped as men COA is only scored about $120.00 runs in the 3 matches so far averaging 20.
