Good morning John the morning as he has some time is still is still alive to you know you are back a week and you see there is a. Reason have a No you're not just just talking it over. It's glorious out there today made up most I mean it's very good guarding well and you know just just thinking about what people could be doing today I mean today's weather forecast is good so what should people be doing in the garden today I think it's one of these things if it's a nice day the best thing I would say is to try to enjoy your garden and to enjoy my garden or to get out and and do a little bit of work 1st and then just be able to sit back and look at all the sort of the fantastic things that are going on and there's some great things with Charlie flowering but some things which have maybe slowed a little bit earlier on are going over maybe now is the time to think about cooking those flowers back to training course or secondary blooms to come true and that's all I'll do just just pick around a few dead leaves tidy up a little bit and make that god nation smart and and ready for the lovely sunny day that we're going to have when you say that with a little bit of doubt I thought in the a voice there but it will be when a man says it's definitely going to be and. That could mean anything couldn't it you know that. You know if people have come home from their holidays and their lawn has grown rather tall you have to be careful don't you about how you actually don't know when you get back from holiday you do the rule of thumb it should never cook more than a few lawn Otherwise you put your lawn stress and say that's where people let alone go a little bit or moves a pita we and then they could it down and the grass is very yellow and straw lake and that's not very good for your grass at all and that's going to encourage weeds to come in it's going to kill off some of the finer crosses and your lawn and research it's not a good way for it so if it has got away a little bit when you've been away just trim it a bit at the top 3rd often if you do is tainted know that know that no 3rd of it and just gradually bring it back into line if they don't get too carried away and the classic thing of course with Lawrence at this time years Daunte cut them too short the ground is very dry this 10 year so there's a shortage of water to the grass so the more you take off the top the more the process got to sort of dig down if you let it get more water and that's a struggle and again that can cause yellow and could cause stress on your lawn. The other thing people have got to remember if they've gone away you know somewhere nice This seems some wonderful plans and you know you know what gardeners do don't do things with a lip they knew little bits and they never thought they'd stuff plants a little bit never heard of this and take them. But we've got to be careful now we do there's lots of regulations which are in force and you've got understand these regulations are for our own good and we've got to be very careful in bringing projects back into this country and kids carrying pesters ease and fact as you say that this legislation stop that and I know it's a bit of a rush when it comes to the airport but you know that there's all sorts of science and Norse's about declarations and and plants and produce around them strange and you need to take great care in what you are trying to bring back even things like flowers that you know sometimes you think all pick will punch or cut flowers or not it was but it's a present and the rules and regulations govern that's it so do be careful and do check with the airport and where you travel from obviously within the e.u. Before Bret's it. We've got a wider range of things we can bring back. If you're travelling from I would say to you it is very restricted to please do check before you try to bring it back in the country because I know actually that a number of growers in this country who often buy the plants in bulk from other European countries are now being very careful about this because there are all sorts of pests and diseases that we've got to be careful about and the as an old a member of the public you're not always aware that there are these dangers you're not you're certainly not and if you buy insulin from a garden center abroad you can't guarantee the reason it isn't a pest disease on this plant and the plants which are imported by nurseries who'll Seal have to be checked and have to have what's called a plant passport just like we have a passport it has to be checked to make sure that they're not Korean person is that the cause cause all sorts of problems to the crops and plants that we grow in this country well you know get in touch with us because you may have one or 2 and. Questions about your gardens or about the sort of thing the johns just been talking about. Still to text with d.v.c. I sent it to travel 3 takes charge based on never let me see New Castle radio for the northeast. And of course you can also call us move got callers coming in at the moment. 2326565 and our 1st caller this afternoon this afternoon you see it's ingrained in my brain. Saying this afternoon good morning Christina Ingate said hello to you. Hello Christina. How can we help you. Why did. You land I couldn't have a head just wasn't edged garden but the little bit too high and oh god now what into cool and it's going to take a good thing. To do a sort of polish and I'm wondering if today can lead actually could. What do you think John Landy I. Suggest that you wanting to prove you personally putting them back or have they got disease on them Christina I know that there's actually healthier that. Keep them in shape but box. Hill hi. Yeah. So. I was. Just a cake and all. And she laced across the top. And I'm just wondering what that damage. Has John Well Christine it's actually fine to cook the. What were probably the right time which is the nesting season for cutting edges so it's a prayer to. God Be careful you don't want to be cooking them on a very dry day because that can have to have problems taking 2 foot off the top the only thing they'll happen is you'll get a hollow top on the actual sort of conifer hedge itself over the next couple years it will growth groove or it will to a patch itself or put it it can look a bit out so if you look from upstairs down at the top of the hedge. You don't need to be overly worried about this that's just how the girl but it's not too late to actually do this and it's actually probably a good time to be sort of doing that. It could because who wants going to happen is you going to get more growth on the plants before when a so kicks in if you like so it's a good time to land dyes and because of the nature of the plant they can grow up to have a metre a year which is 3 foot to a couple a foot off you shouldn't really be Couldn't any saw hardwood so when you couldn't you should be so with you it's no more than think 6 or 2nd and lot has maybe a little hand so when you start going in with chainsaws that's that's when the difficulties can happen so when you tend not so mount off you should be absolutely fine. Well there was good. But then I want to make. Sure. If it's used a chance or just look a little bit more glad to start with and then they should recover or be well or should recover like anything you harpoon in the same year the thing to do and Christina would be to think that warn them and it sounds mad Warren a hedge and then the girl like billy oh protect. Anytime after pruning what you're doing it's year you're going to lose a lot of moisture over the plant so the thing to do is to think about getting the getting the hedge a little bit of water for the next weeks just once a week of the good so if you can and that will help it's sorry in the climate for 20 years. Yeah yeah I know you see it that that the ship should be absolutely fine it'll just not look the best when you couldn't them a chance a conference don't you cut them the chain so but the should recover because of the nature of them. Right. Now. Thank you very much for your call Kristina and I see John it's interesting on a general point you know because these hedges and some other hedges grew very tall obviously. You always need to do you actually need to keep them under control before you get to that 2 metre height so they've always got some soft material at the top it's also once that it's also it's one thing when you put hedging plants in what you want them to actually grow and that the taller the got the more difficult to coat and it's almost to get too tall for people you can see in the get away from people and that's when people have to quit and so it's a sense certainly to me as well as it would be a bit of a height that I would see trying not to go above and I would say even a little bit less than that because once you get get beyond that you've got to have quite store stepladders and it makes it quite dangerous. Hedges and all sorts of things can happen when you claim blood as and you're trolling but plants are we going to be very safe when the gun so a little bit lower might mean that you might not even need to use a stepladder which would be safer again thank you head that plot Planning is everything. 191-232-6565. You can reveal the. Now this is the time of year when allotments show off their produce to visitors for allotment week so yesterday on a windy Saturday morning I went along to the community allotments it with the bay and the sky was a little gem down the old wagon way by the Churchill playing fields showed me around. 100 people 3 very busy we've had lots of people coming to have a look the sort of people I think who would like to allotments we cannot 1st so people who are very busy people here perhaps a bit older and need a smaller plots and just people I guess who are interested in being part of something in the community rather than just an ordinary allotment looking down a long narrow area with a path right the way down the middle I would look to got lots of plots on either side and yet so so what we offer to people are plots probably. Much smaller than you'd normally expect in an allotment probably not much more than about a foot square. But obviously you can grow or a lot of stuff also you can have many more plots so we tend to have shorter waiting lists and it's people who perhaps you know sort of would like just a small or a lot that they can maintain fairly easily so as we're walking down this path we're walking past but a shared way Liz I think you've got teas and coffees you've got children but a little children's area with the music there in the early of the shed and trying to be more family friendly I guess than a regular Long Island and also more I suppose suited to people who are fairly new so we have tools and we have a communal polytunnel for people so you really need to just kind of turn on rather than have all the equipment and the knowledge there's lots of people here you can kind of help out if you're not sure what you do and let people use anybody use the polytunnels Yes And as you can see people are growing Oh it's never any good luck. Allowed to the winners you know the gene is just joining us you know the secretary . And Mark you're under check you're having a good morning. Jeanne I heard you could explaining to someone that as it's the end of the season yes you know there's not quite so much for people to see in the stands for growing up there really is it the plots are gradually emptying and then people are thinking that winter crops now you know garlic is overwintering and he ends up at the still there are still crops to be Hi Mark just explained just tell everybody what there is in this wonderful Polito hole called just about everywhere so there's that there's an awful lot of tomatoes in varying degrees of brightness a lot of cause and peppers many different types of chili and we seem to have a bit of a spate of chili growing I think probably be a lot of chili jam being made in the next few months oh but you know Stone There's no I've got some moves Yes So yes just an awful lot of different things. Black tomatoes black tomatoes the blonde said you know this is I thought am I looking at obese when I know it's a black to Montrose yet to people like to try out to defend you yet it's great to experiment to be entered to trying something a bit different that you get in the supermarket and you know it's a good way to do it and we started off with only 9 plus and then we got. In there we're expanding even further to get more plots and the community orchards of about $500.00 yards. So how many how many different plots if you go out at the moment we've got about 31 plots but people have the use of this big polytonal community shed. We've got all the tools that anybody could possibly want we've got a little We've got a garden and we've got a. Pond with nukes and frogs in the sitting room so people can sit in and relax after the gardening that's lovely Oh and I should say child friendly very child family we have the children's children can come and help with. When people don't mind them playing playing around something and I actually want to just get some money off Greg's And one of the things we're going to do with the new land that we've cleared is to have a dedicated children's garden so how is this financed it's financed by in fields and also for the big items we do have we do get funding you get grants and we just get you right yes yes so how much just cost a mark to. $24.00 pounds a year which is fairly reasonable we think we should say though that obviously the cost of the plots doesn't cover all our costs and so we're very grateful to organizations like the cracks foundation and Tesco soup been very supportive just because we've been going about 10 years now so over the years we've had lots of generous help release. And that was Gene Morrison and Mark Pierce at the Whitley Bay Community allotment yesterday we'll hear little bit more from some of the other allotment holders later on but John we've just checked out the name of that black tomato Yes it's a really interesting it's called Indigo Rose and damn it I think it's quite amazing that you know people enjoy grown tomatoes and more skin and and when you grow insulated more so you think about grow new varieties and this certainly looks a really interesting want to think about it looked really weird in a way but at the same time it looked sort of luscious so I should have pinched one of. Them Are you should others do well behaved. Yes you may think that a. Cheeky. 191-2326 I 6. But that's 10 now to some of the bits and pieces that have been in the news regarding Gardens one way or another in the last few days the garden bridge project in London has announced it's winding up due to lack of funds the organizers blamed a lack of support from London mass of the car on the bridge which was forecast to cost up to $200000000.00 pounds was backed by former Mad Boris Johnson in 2013 but unable to find a private benefactor its future was thrown into doubt by a review that recommended it was safer to scrap the scheme than risk uncertain costs more than 37000000 pounds of public money has already been spent on it and the damning review that damning new view by day Margaret Hodge published in April Koku that it was difficult to justify further public investment. How the cattle wrestling within the news this month is wrestling with a real sting in its tail. Now scientists have discovered a brand new flower in Shetland a delicate golden bell of a flower with its throat lect with tiny blood red spots and the colors echoing the lion a rampant it's a discreet beauty though as each flower is only slightly larger than a 50 pence piece it's also unique because it's a new flower for Scotland it was discovered by a team from Sterling's Department of Biological and then viral mental sciences it's being referred to as Shetlands monkey flower because it's larger and it's flowers are more open than previous flowers as was discovered by the side of the road near Lerwick and it's ancestor was a non-native species introduced to the British Isles just a couple of centuries ago probably from Alaska. I want to have you know that then on Shetland something really unusual happened for those of you who are interested in this sort of thing this little flower double the number of which chromosomes it's known in science as genome duplication or poly Lodhi it's made the Shetland monkey flower a bigger flower with a wider throat than its ancestors and actually it's as I was saying it's a common phenomenon in the history of flowering plants many crops like potatoes tobacco and coffee polyploid. But more recently an exclusive Mutual of has been launched on to the markets called a bull's eye because it resembles the center of a dart board or a red high that's for him to green it's a double she lip with a cherry red center but with green out of petals the growing back says the troop of thrive in some no shade though it's more sensitive to frost have grown in parts the price $9.00 pounds 95 for a pack of 5. Well it goes back to what you're seeing earlier it's been a very very dry sore season and Dalian state quite a bit of moisture and all cut flowers like to be kept cool and surmised if you like and so what I would recommend for anybody could in flowers out of the garden is the best advice is to cook them in the morning that's when they got more smudged or an a or night that the plants take and not my future and it builds back up the plants so if you take them in the day the plants won't be so good so so try try and pick your plants in the morning and soon she cook them put them straight into water you know so I have a bucket of water at the side and just drop straight in and of course it's also across again just just be careful in the house where you put them in and don't put men direct sunlight where that where they can they can dry out so that we my advice well they are brand I hope that's a help but if anybody else has got some additional an advice perhaps you've got some flower arrangements out there who've got one or 2 little tips to pass on give us a call 181-912-3265 extension 65 or text 81 triple 3 started text with a b. B. C. John I was just thinking in the news when I was reading out some interesting little news pieces there that bit about the minimalists good Tartars or the new little Shetland monkey flower is an interesting weird thing isn't it that it has happened that it's suddenly turned into some the difference is it is a different species or it's variant it's not the most likely thing which is happened is because as I'm sure people appreciate the Shetlands as it's quite so remote and there's only one take a plant maybe that's come in by chance it's then been breeding with itself so genetically it it's just it's just crossed and crossed with itself and that's created this sort of strong gust of plant if you like with the bigger flowers it maybe maybe in that situation it needs bigger flowers for pollination so the ones with smaller flowers have gone by the by and it plants are. Musing Well as you know we've actually been visiting because it's a lot meant we could be in visiting and allotments at Whitley Bay the community allotment and then earlier we heard from 2 allotments holders who are on the allotments committee man I met and knew one new allotment holder Sima Walker who took over her plot 6 months ago but already has grown a whole Co new Copia of produce. 2 martyrs cabbage of clutch cable of caught cauliflower and of broccoli of peach fruit got some particle in theaters and some leak are growing in between the tomatoes over there and after the child is well it's pretty good just move the birch do attack the plants and we need to cover the the next 2 to stop them from eating the plants Why do you come here I love coming here having some fresh air just just playing in the soil is it's enjoyable and if you have any family who help you or is this something you do when you rode I do on my own at the moment I did invite my young grandsons to come here today but they have gone somewhere else to se a place then I will get them one day and now bring them over. And just next to actually there is a plot here it's full of the most gigantic and still he's allowed only flowers and they're all turning to face the Sir look up city wonderful their children from the year high school they come here to tend the plants and take of ideas and they've done some very colorful stuff my name's all current work will pay high school. Tell me what the children do well the children can come down at lunch time so after school and have been planting seeds for the grown all of the sunflowers from seeds and all of the flowers basically everything he's got marigolds and you've got. Some rhubarb here and speech roots green greens Monch to we've got strawberries we've got lettuce and then we went and got some tires from the local garret to move painted them all. So was age group come here. The come here from the ages of 13 and sometimes up to about 14 after that was a little bit of interest but they love to come down and they do a lot of war training we go to the compounds of one so once a week during term it just depends some come most lunch time still want to come down because we're right next to the school year round where you asked is it just come through the gate and then they come in another hobby to water everybody else's plot and so what happens in the in the summertime with that when they're all on holiday Well it's left to me. I come down and I continue it and then take photos so they can see what's grown over the summer and you don't really well actually because some of these I mean that are they Mongolian Giants by chance you know right here but they certainly show you so yes yes that was way above our heads a little bit I was 1314 yes excellent you but you have to get the children to measure it because if it's really tall and by September it could end up in the begin this book of RINGBACK records. Will have to get the tape measure out and see how high it is. Next to us we've got another part of Scott maze and and wonderful run of beans it seems a pleasure I mean what's a community like here very supportive very friendly and everyone helps each other so it's not only a social place to meet with others but also have pleasure of doing some puppies. And then you can eat some of this when you get home that says well. Brag about it at home and make people food still don't like. To sway them. And that would seem a walk and all the Errington of that we keep a community. Allotments yesterday next door to with high school. Garden mania b.b.c. The thing to do is just have a look along the shelves and look at the active ingredients put it it's really problematic trying to find things which which can do the job and sometimes the best things to look for an organic version which doesn't need testing quite so much and for fungal problems there are certainly a lot of copper based things about and maybe you could try to look at those yes and it really is a case of going into your garden center and having a look because you will get advice about the different products yes in the garden center because a lot of them are trained to do that exactly in the normal 8 it will be something which is following on from it or there would be an alternative to be looking at Goodwill if you've got a question for John your sense attacks it want to start your text with b.b.c. And I love you know your father here with you know your beautiful Archer round the bench seat and how long does it take you to make that good John soon enough I made it in a day and that was just some whips from a cook back there were what my allotment in before let's have a go at making a seat and I don't think it's a part of her 1st job I think it's very good yes it's lovely actually already had one hacker because it's grown by Billy or you can see and it needs another what would you think will put them in will it actually removed Well you know the old you could be conceived to look a curve from its park their house and say your view of use a lot of Willow. Federal money to create a very very nice it's not an easy journey holding perched on this. Yes but deciding which bits to we go down. Yes and some of it's quite shaded isn't it under the trees but then there are other bits for them or more open making it a raised bed and putting in all our extra soil has really lifted it hasn't it you know and the because the plants the happy here and I think more boldness often think about new builds and how people move on when you were a state and how the developers take off all of the topsoil and then of rubble and then a very thin Larry and this is you know a great example of how you can actually work with but still create a beautiful garden with very little soul. So the thing to do you know if you're in a new build garden is to just add extra soil. To it and prove your soil and of course you're raising the temperature of the site as well so that's a to win win. So you've repeated you've got your favorite plants and you repeated them quite a lot haven't you it's quite a tight plant here as want to maybe 10. Species across here so we've just repeated the same things just to get the whole thing kind of unit you've got in your car in the back there which are going to stick. And they are that was Shawn Marie Addison has now Belford which is open to the public this afternoon and I'll be giving you more details about how to get there a little later in the program but we've got 2 callers on the line now who called us 191-232-6565 we've got John in walls and Veronica from Jarrow and John I think you're both going to talk about what's your question I dream just. Yes And Veronica are you also what what's your question about. Back up what. Would it be possible to distill a topic to. Pruning hydrangeas and then John is your in-laws and is your question about tuning hydrangeas as well well I've got 2 parts for the men as parts I was learning that 'd they did transfer the middle pick up part this is to tell me you're not writing well John Guy is here let's do the transferring into parts question 1st on 1st will join in other the other too big for the parts so you've got them in for instance or other quote you know the Drano quite a lot. Would say yes or yeah yeah I mean you can you can put them in if you could do it now you can park you can report the mood any time while an active group now what Laci happens when you put in the bigger pot with a bit of fresh compost and you're going to get lots of that your own because it's going to be quite warm in there soon so it's actually a good time to move them in and support them on if you lake. So I would say be fine doing that now. Make be a point where they get to too large she might have to think about either put them into the ground or you may have to think of uprooting back to keep them a certain size the Congo in a pot. What I would recommend John is that a solo comp Aust mean a guess of a Jonas compass which you can get more so a cancer on the p.p.s. Comes when you move into bigger parts and plants tend to thrive much better in a style biscuit must that it doesn't dry out so much. So that's just what is a good idea what you just said transfer the ground are set up yourselves. But the parts of got it deep you know I mean but the cause that if sort that builds up a bit you know I mean yeah Yes sir so you've now got yes so it's I mean I mean you know your guard but what that that that's a thing in and it's sand what happened with with plants when they're in China so that the plant shoots would go sideways but a part of course they'll grow down as far as they can to get the nourishment in the water you know yeah yeah. Yes or so yes certainly find reporting them now that should be a problem at all John. Zogby faint of doing that even though they might be in full flower the still be fine until now as I'm sure so careful if the moat and dare I say truck tries to make a solid base come pasta around them and that Dutch should do them really well get it get a good start on the. Other house so Veronica in general you've got a question about pruning hydrangeas But are you growing yours in parts or are they in the garden. All night so John you gotta be careful about when you came back you know you had ranges Yeah you do it oh yeah yeah I have the they're there they're sort of the kind of problems were frostbitten into hydrangeas Obviously when we're knocking and frost at the moon put it there not too far away as I think we realize 1st in one of Europe in the morn he gets a nip in the air and what I would say I recommend for an hour is that you 2 are so careful so approving So what you want to be thinking about is there is a one in 3 So take a 3rd of the branches right back into the base of the plant and now that could even be don't know if you want it to put out probably recommend that you probably leave that for another month or so if you just take the bunch stuff or even do it in the spring and that's going to courage you grew up to come from the beer so you take a 3rd of the your branch off hard back at the bottom of the plant and then what that's going to do is going to get to regenerate from the part of the plant and over the next 2 years you to the rest of the plant back the same and the plant should then has a taint regenerate if you could the whole thing back to the piece it can be so problematic and you will lose your flower over the next few years so so just do it bit by bit so so a 33rd of the plant cut back over this year then a 3rd next year then then then and 2 years 10 the final bit and your plan should be regenerated by then and you know just keep it watered and fed and this should come on fine and once you get to that point then you can do some more sort of gentle prudent if you like to meet in the science that you want. Bring in the other flooring at the moment. You know the can do it all the only pens on the lovely weather patterns that we have which we can't control so so plants tend to react to the environment so so they get the right conditions of flowers my what time of year it is the hydrangeas are a bit like that you can get a 2nd flush on them yes. Right well let us know how you get on Veronica glad we could help and that was John and was and Veronica in Jarrow both with questions about their hydrangeas and if you've got a question for the team you've just about got. Time flies in this hour you really need to call this a soon as you can but it's 819-123-2656 extension 5 let's check out the Open Gardens today. And in fact the annual garden fete for hospice care in North Northumberland is on the soft and on from 1 o'clock and she is one pound children are free it's at the Red Rose Cottage dancing greenhouse at South Hazel Rick Chatham and they've got afternoon tea and it's the 4th year that they're holding this and it's in memory of Angela Mathewson who lived locally and who was well loved in the community could have lots of stores locally grown plants close in the and cake stalls as Indian Head mass r.j. Gathered all sorts of special demonstrations anyway from chatter and now pay attention if you think you can go there listen to this you turn in by the post office you follow the road straight over the crossroads and straight ahead for a couple of miles just past the beware horse and take the 1st. On the right drive carefully into South Hazel Reg follow the winding road through the farm past the bungalows on the left the fates in the garden on the right and parking is available I hope you remember. There are no gardens open today for the Red Cross but the other are a couple open for the National Guard scheme the Corrie ended well with Darlington 5 miles west of Darlington on the a 68 That's a 3 quarter 80 a wooden garden with an old quarry it's in a in an old quarry extensive use over south and spectacular late summer displays offend every engine on the mental vegetable plot and up in North Northumberland as you're hearing a little earlier Addison house at Addison mains is open that's one mile south of Belfort on the a one half a mile north of Paddy lodge petrol station the Victoria House has gardens millpond 10 acres of walls garden a rose orchard scent and God in vain yachties grape juice for this is and it cost 5 pounds for adults. And let's go up to Ellington to say good morning to Sandy Hello Sandy Yes good morning. Martin. We just. Wanted to get. On the stand. Tamara. I think I don't know what to. Think so. So 1st 1st of all science fair see if grown you tomatoes how you actually grew in them and where he grew in them growing in the many. Long bags but we've got parts inside the bags right so it's got group on the top and we put the parts on the top of them actually set into them yeah yeah. Ok and how to how tall are you tomatoes 6 or so right so it's sort of if they're good reason or size I would suspect another group in it and a greenhouse in a greenhouse system are very used to greenhouse right and the most important thing are you getting tomatoes off them Oh yes yes we get a lot of models often so it certainly does want to keep it going to get in this brown bottom on so that the brown bottom such on the tomato itself on the tomato itself yes right it it's one and anything which is like they say you've got on Sun the plant needs a lot of energy to create fruits and things and you think what you get like this is going to be nutrition affected now because of the way you could ruin a new group box with your parts and so forth in I would suspect yet you haven't worn them quite a bit to dry out quite quickly to then yes yes no I still into using Well what actually happens to say is b.p.m. Is is that Tom writes a great thing you need to keep on top the saw feed it all that's happening though is a lot of the probably the feed that you're putting on is probably just written straight out of the pots in the group because what's going to happen is the group are going to part and you find this when you take the plants apartment Lee Iran is just going to be this mishmash of roots and you wonder where the compost is because just be solid root and the problem you have there is. That it's very difficult for the compost to hold on to moisture and nutrients and the plants you need a constant supply tomatoes the best reporters are very so greedy so feeders so the thing to do is is to maybes wore them before hand so give me a little bit of my shit before hunt high treat them and then just use a very sort diluted Tom right food in your war and can on a more regular basis see just put on little more often and that would be the best thing to do with them there's all sorts of different so I could do something like that you know you should you should know you should need to do it twice a day but then you could go depend on the recommendations on you tolerate if you put it to half the strength and double the applications that should be fine the other thing that Coke be doing of course is and I don't know if there's a case and you could be killed them with kindness which is to say you could be trying to put too much time right in cuz you know it is your classic way you're supposed to pull a certain amount in and we always just came think oh well we'll put another one in just you know because we're well a God plants will love these plants so we're going to give them a little bit more so just be very very careful not to over Dorce with the fertilizer that's either extreme you could go to so either we there's either a little bit too little bit too much going to the plants and that's probably what's what's happening with it with you to want to when you've got in a stand what will get to that point you know which the turning point will get and cool nights as well and when you look at all nights in it it's a real sort of check on the plant so so just be careful I'll just just just follow those instructions and who fully you continue to get your tomatoes lovely thank you very much all right so how do you think you know thank you but you know they're talking about it's a martyr's but we've got David from South Shields on the line now good morning David good morning good morning you've got a very different question and tell us what it is now didn't do it tomatoes. I think given aloe vera. Is a better idea is going to you sorry 3 eggs you know 3 is on it yeah. I run the 4 and who in minutes are matches can I split the 3 heads or surely them as they are well well David and that's an interesting one and it's all down to you as a gardener you could split them and it all in all of it's not shaken when you could a plant back it breaks from both slowing down so let's hope that you've got 3 active boards as long as you've got an active put on the top with it and some root on the bottom then should have no problem at all and so so if you think it's that you want to split and you want to have 3 plants maybe want to give give one away to friends or relatives and sincerely do that and you could do that now if you want to oh it's no problem leave it where it is what you're thinking What the what I before. I do you need you know I would want one out of your yeah and it died off or killed accidentally right I think the restriction on. Univision in the aerator I wear it all this year yes so so so many maybe split downs memories memories not upon think the thing about doing and then you know the likelihood of losing 3 plants is against one is not going to be as great as it. Spread them to follow. And let us know how you get out let's know how you get on the way you know all right good good luck with that thank you very much for your call David and we've had a text from jail in South Shields when wondering and she sends a photo as well of a plant she was wondering what it was and does it have been able to sort of. Unfortunately I can't look at it what I'll do is after the show and have a look at it next week will come back to tell you what it is because it's just a small picture so I'll have to blow to have a look at it but if you can sense any more to it is and if you could tweak the photograph to that would be better but what I do is of have a look and by next week give you some ounces excellence Let's go now to our next caller who is John in County Down there all coming in at the last minute call us a bit Hello. John how was morning good morning how are you on and jam off you go to new creeper. But outside my door in an expo. And it gets the sun for a good part of it it's the leaves are falling. Very fast and very dry. Because one of the roots owing to the wind the rain I think I'm trying to save the ones that are left. In the leaves off and I've spread general rule or something. Spray that I reckon put it in the soil I wondered if you could advice please so how long have you had these plants John about. 30 years and the done fine up to now yes in the part about. A little. Let's think one and centimeters is more difficult no give us an inch is it's fine 30 by stating that by 15 so it's. In the last 7 or 8 inches deep. Change and it's got to the plants and it is well yeah I think it's I think what us are seeing it added to the plant be necessary long tying in the containers it's very difficult for plants to sustain itself indefinitely. And probably 30 years is a good time to be to be havenot you know so so so climbed up the you say. But that's doing really well considering what small amount of root it's got if you like them and and you've see you tonight a new war and you're feeding it. Recently right I think that. Is admitted to Larry King I think yes yes no I don't American plant here and I may have overdone it just because I was going on holiday or something you know I'm. Not sure right it's a difficult one because I would say say that your best bet is to try and put in a bigger container put I would suspect you can't do that. You know and they did their thing you can do is is to try and price in the compost out and put some fresh compost strong because it's amazing how Doc and have an effect and so rejuvenating and what are what have you been feeding with John it's just I asked the garden center Joel when I can't remember its name. Of the disable so I'm stuck in the garden at the moment what I what I would suggest is to try you some so volcanic feet some of that is seaweed or so might not. And there was a lot when you are where you are but you could do that just for me she's got 3 Solomonson and sometimes limits can make all the difference to very small amounts of nutrients almost like the victim and you know we. Kind of salute you should you should be at the barn and you can certainly just want to see we've which is a liquid or a granule and use up at the hall through that lot of that would be a tonic that's the best way to put it but it may resurrect as it may not yes yes good. Good good good luck with that and I'm having to close in there because we've got to find out what's happening for this is the weather for this week from on. B.b.c. Newcastle Northeast weather. And how's it looking or only are we going to have a good week for gardeners Well actually it's not looking too bad today I would say is probably going to be the best day a lot of dry bright weather to come you know it was a bit of a chilly start across much of the northeast but we're going to see those temperatures rise to about 19 or 20 Celsius remaining dry with sunny spells you know we'll take it getting a bit cloudy heading through the afternoon and the remaining sunshine will probably turn a bit hazier and overnight dry with some clear spells overhead perhaps just the odd isolated passing shower loads of one South Yes So a chilly start to the day again tomorrow but it will be bright clouding over with some rain then later on and blustery conditions a cloudy day on Tuesday with drizzle but feeling a lot milder as we head through Tuesday and Wednesday as we import tropical air from the southwest and it's safe to cross the Holy Island today until 1215 thanks very much Allan what So it's going to be a good week for gardeners and Dorna in their walk with. We'll answer your question next week it's about her roses and all the leaves are falling off the ice with have to do something about that and. Traveling Bedlington once are the best way to feed his Japanese AC. It's in a pot can you answer the best way to use it use a liquid for your food for your feet is the best thing but you know do give us a ring next week and speak to us and give you a bit of advice there we are that's all from God mania for this week remember you can hear John's advice all over again on the i Player just go to the b.b.c. Newcastle website and follow the links Sweeney's coming up after the news and John Guy will be back with us at 9 o'clock next Sunday I hope you'll join us then so keep listening and enjoy your gardening.
