A recount is underway in the last seat to declare in the general election Kensington in central London the conservatives have at the moment 30800 seats 8 short of an overall majority the prime minister says she's seeking parliamentary support from Northern Ireland's Democratic Union as the de u.p.s. Leader Arlene Foster confirmed that they would enter discussions with the conservatives the chairman of the conservatives $922.00 backbench committee Graham Brady says that despite the results backbenchers were not calling for a new leader there is no appetite now for plunging the government in the country into a period of turmoil that we really do want to try to offer some continuity and prove that we can make this work effectively so I don't think there's any great appetite either for a leadership contest or the public will be relieved to hear for another general election the prime minister has started confirming her cabinet Downing Street has said that the chancellor Philip Hammond the foreign secretary Boris Johnson the home secretary Amber Rudd the Defense Secretary Michael fallen and the brags that Secretary David Davis would all keep their roles Labor exceeded expectations taking 40 percent of the vote. Gaining 29 seats leaving them with 261 m. Pays the Shadow Foreign Office minister Catherine West said they'd give the electorate hope for the future Labor had better ideas than the Tories which the Tories had a sort of empty vessel it was a bit robotic to campaign and I feel in a campaign you need to touch people's hearts and I felt that was lacking from the Tories and actually I think somehow labor with its person to person style of campaigning really touch people's emotions and then the Scottish National Party saw its gains in the 2015 general election slashed by 21 seats its leader Nicholas Sturgeon said the losses were busily disappointing and acknowledged without her call for a 2nd independence referendum had affected the result but she insisted her party would still play a critical role Westminster In other news to former b.b.c. News at 3 minutes past 7. Now they know that I'm happy Friday everyone I want to Friday is has been post general election quite a few surprises for all parties I reckon we get to reflect on this in the last 24 hours in politics with don't of Pete would call I mean we can John with Chris Meissen political correspondent he's been flitting from Westminster to Manchester and back again and on the edge of getting off the bus nearly nearly almost little spot of weekend weather from the b.b.c. Weather Center Oh and not forgetting the of. What's going in tonight still when. You can call me over 3 full 538058 now let's get to work. People lots of happy and lots of not so happy people after the election it wasn't the 20 point landslide victory that reason I was expecting and her policy as well but not a resulting win but when I woke up this morning to a hung parliament I wasn't expecting that either here to make sense of a bill I missed him yesterday he's on b.b.c. Bicycle correspondent Chris Mason l o evening Georgie you must be a very time Chris Yeah I've been out for more than 24 hours straight now and since Thursday morning at 6 and I've only had 2 and a half so. You realise that the sort of weird combinations you get to the supermarket beforehand and get your provisions Yes it's like feels like going on a kind of you strap Campos. You carry a bag full of various random things and then you discover surprise surprise that carrots and chocolates don't go that well to you gotta roll a carrot or 2 in the morning that you have a bit of chocolate and I will be a bit of a funny come but I should have helped me through the night I absolutely would do that again. Now it wasn't what was expected was it you know my dad was flat but my jaw was on the floor I just couldn't believe it I was overnight working overnight and I got chance I was one of the super nerds that got the privilege of a damn sight about exhibit hall that was flashed around the world at 10 o'clock at night because I was going to go on the radio and talk about it so I got to see the figures in advance so that I in theory knew what I was talking about when I went on the radio that was the theory anyway and you know I have to say my my vocabulary was a bit salty when I 1st saw the numbers because I thought oh I'm going to many this can't be right surely. Double checked it wasn't sort of a dummy run or something they'd done in 2010 when the water a hung parliament and a coalition in the 1st few results came in and various Safaga Jaycee's election analysts were pouring over the details to try and work out if the if it suggested the exit poll was wrong and the 1st couple of results suggested the exit poll might be wrong and one analyst was suggesting it might mean the Tories another majority of Andras and you're Blimey We're back in that territory again one poll saying no but you know it's either the polls saying a massive where that is the night went on basically the exit poll that sort of super duper poll that they do on polling day with a with a sample loads and loads of people and loads and loads of polling stations was pretty much buying on which the conservatives are the biggest party but they haven't got a majority and to reason they are called this election in order to go forwards and as a result of it she's gone backwards and what do you make of the result I mean can the conservatives with the help from the d p be you know strong and stable. It's going to be a tall order to be quite honest because you know the way it works at Westminster you've got 650 seats and the easiest way to be having a decent crack at being prime minister is make sure you lead a party that's got more than 326 In other words more than half plus one and then when there's a vote providing you can persuade all of your side to vote with you can be tricky sometimes but provided you can do that all your votes will add up to more than all of. The law put together at last basically a bit more complicated question Fein in Northern Ireland don't take their seats and that much about with the numbers but that's the way to go about that business normally and the prime minister had that majority of about 17 before the election now she doesn't go to persuade the do you pay to back out at each and every vote I think we can we can hazard a guess that the be fairly loads of dosh making their way across the Irish Sea because if you're the deep a what would you say well maybe I will back you on that vote on schools in England but you know any chance of a new jewel carriageway on the outskirts of Belfast you know that kind of conversation will go on as well trying to help other things that do you pay want to see achieved and why shouldn't that be the case because the D.P.'s saying we'll lend you you our support to prop you up in government thoughts on any given vote at any given time in the next 5 years and stories of my use that 5 years she said she wanted to govern for 5 years the d.p. Can. How should I put this grab the Tories by the only show you this I mean look you know and say you know we're not going to support you on those and the Tories After think. They were here oh maybe we're going to do them another another 5 or so to answer your question can it be strong and stable while who knows politics has a capacity to surprise us we've been learnt in the last few years and on the face of it looks like it we mighty hard for it to be yeah and labor they have done much better than had been predicted haven't they yeah a 1000000 miles better because the whole working assumption of to reason why in the Conservatives was that Jamie Colby was this joke leader of the opposition the weakest opponent they could possibly ever face so let's call an election and sort of obliterate our principal opposition the Labor Party that's the conservative thinking and jobs ago didn't quite turn out that way I did it Jeremy Corbyn turned out to be pretty resilient a pretty successful campaigner did much much better than people thought 1st time Labor's gain seats since $9097.00 however for the cheers and the. Of the the court ministers those loyal to the corporate projects and of course they should be allowed to cheer in a week given how they did perform it is worth emphasizing that they lost and they lost easily they lost in a sense by a similar margin to Gordon Brown back in 2010 that had to win and least one of the 60 seats probably another 8 to win outright themselves and you know big parties like the Tories and Labor are in the business of winning elections and for the 3rd election in a row Labor failed to do that it'll probably mean he sticks around there instead of falling on his sword because he lost because he has done so well has an a in a there's a hope there I suppose yeah and I think what you can certainly do is choose the timing of his own departure you might he might think if there's going to be an election in the autumn quarter I mean can you imagine that but if you mean election in the autumn and it that's not impossible now you might think you know give it another crack and I might make it to Downing Street or if the whole Parliament does drag on a bit and there isn't a another election he might think you know I've been vindicated I prove that my project can be pretty popular if not quite popular enough to win in these circumstances and he can to do off and he's right up in the history books will be very very different from you know the kind of front pages are to put up with for the for the last couple of years so you know German Corbett in a very strengthened position tonight despite losing in getting fewer seats than to retain my injuries and my much much much much weaker than what she was when she came back from that walking holiday with Phillip in the mountains of Snowdonia and decided that a snap election was a great idea Yeah turns out from her perspective she was wrong Nick Clegg on fallen foul to the Labor party poll national gone from you can't could we see a resurgence of Nigel Farage I've seen that sort of bandaids about a bit today you know people have been asking Nigel Farage could you make a comeback and when I hear this question I think to myself one of the you ever wonder why you today I mean it's kind of always now you stop being Ukip leader but he had to stop being the kit leader. To spend more time in the media so Nigel Farage I used always kind of got you know in each ichi feet and a desire to make a difference and he argues look if there's hung parliament means that securing direct and the kind of direct it that he wants is a lot harder because the government is weaker than he would consider a comeback but the challenge for him is you know what kind of comeback because you could have got 0 and pays when we're outside of the European Union there were any members of the European Parliament Council a base their base in local government was decimated at the last local elections just a little while ago so it's kind of quite tricky I suspect he might be some kind of freelance advocates of Drax it who pops up on the other talk shows and Question Time and all of that without having to do the whole business of party management which is a fair old tricky task in any party and particularly tricky one often in Ukip and do we have information about the jumps you know in terms of reshuffle or is that too soon we do we have some of them reshuffle amounts to nobody going anywhere so far so the big gigs retain the people who did them so Amber are still the home secretary and Boris Johnson is still the foreign secretary and Michael followed still defense secretary and Philip Hammond is still the chancellor the have to be some reshuffling lower down the the pack of cards if you like of the of the government because quite a few ministers got kicked out lost their seats for the have to be a little bit or shuffling Bengala for instance dad used to be a conservative m.p. You might remember him in the whole hall of about mad cow disease and all of our government was an m.p. He was the guy who devised the Conservative manifesto a Conservative manifesto that big you know chunk of the electorate bluer rasp react to ensure that the conservatives couldn't win and the people of which blew a respite was to go markers and he's a goner as well now will you be having a restful weekend in other news Chris Mason with the family remember who you are I wonder. Well tomorrow tomorrow in my diary since well before the calling of this election was a trip in the Night Garden life oh if you're familiar with this show and. This is a show that goes out to see p.b.s. Every night which my daughter is absolutely addicted to is the only thing she can pay attention to for 28 minutes I've come across I don't know what it is about the sounds or the likes of tried to say much of the day doesn't work but in the Night Garden she so we're going to in the Night Garden live and it's a terrific named occasion it's called the pinky punk show. That if you do I just watch that I've only lost 24 hours. Aficionados will know the pinky punk is the airborne contraption that flies around in the Night Garden we call it the disco to create colorful creatures rattling about within it so that he's behind that is my day off tomorrow you are all being back on the election for your own sound like you have a fabulous day Chris Mason and thank you so much for your analysis and all the chat as your mother pulled rank on you yet David me so I walk in the door the other night you know you want to manage the journey weren't you so I learned you know you're not going to Manchester back to London and then I'd say I was going back to see but seem a wife and my mum was looking after a lit one because I've been on the campaign trail and you and I view the night you'd asked me hadn't you about this question do you see that picking up on this whole business of treason by running through fields of wheat Yes I'd said Oh I'm not crashing I was a crashing bore and managed to you know neatly swerve your and I shouted Ira geisha I would ask your mother I mean you said they don't care because you've got you go on your show you'd have to extend the show to want to. Turns out yeah my mom's kind of gossip network of friends are keen listeners as you might and I well this is I don't know he listeners to because they're people of tight keeping for a good part from their friendship it might not be what. They were listening to Georgie tonight the other night and. Basically I was. At this point. B.o.j. Yes and Love Train on b.b.c. Georgie tonight now I need your help because you know there's been there's been a lot of goings on in Westminster today so I thought we don't know Ryan cabinet by the Greek it all I would actually make that effect now but Cabinet what position would you hold I would be head of well chief cook and bottle washer I reckon in our house so in your house what cabinet position do you hold over 34531858 would he call me when you text I want triple 3 star you message with the word Georgie adios I love an e-mail from you this evening Georgie at b.b.c. The u.k. We are going to reflect on the last 24 hours but listen the jar of hearts it's it's up and running. Yeah there is no way of getting in the n.s.a. What would you put in a jar of hearts something small that's happened when it actually might be something really big maybe you're put in a jar of heart something good that's happened this week big or small over 34531858 now with me for the 1st half of the show I got Dr p. Politics expert at the University of how this fair oh my word you have been busy Dr Pete haven't I just said well I don't know who needs sleep on an exciting time like this I mean what is kept alone by the mental stimulus of politics sufficiently So yes always here. With. All night last night following the results as they came in it's exciting times and I don't mind doing it because quite frankly if I wasn't in a place like this are just be grumbling in my house shall I get the television looking when you know it well I'd say it's just it's nice to share my witticism flexions with the broader world so it's a lot of what did you make of it then because we were sort of standing by for the exit polls at 10 pm when they came out it was quite shocking it would appear to people for a variety of different reasons 1st we weren't expecting that kind of results and certainly you know lots of people were saying well I go to bed early on I won't stay up the next or the exit poll and they were hooked. But politically it's quite historically momentous take your mind back to our 992 where you and I are about 5 then oh I was. There. John Major unexpectedly got a majority the conservatives would not get another majority until 2015 to 20 years ago that was so so so 2023 years is that my as my maestro niceties he thought yeah yeah there is a nice fragment of early in life 330 days it's it is astonishing in that respect so . This is probably not the last time we'll discuss the events of last night the impact that it's had political a so this is going to rumble on for a bit I think yeah yeah where do the conservatives go from here we hear the d u p that is who she will be piling up with potentially and it's as if they come from nowhere the kingmakers they calling them well the do you pay I mean if one was from Northern Ireland's you would be aware of that I think we. Less so you know I mean do you pay as a political party are naturally conservative they were probably more likely to vote with a Conservative government anyway you know however you know David Cameron's Conservatives been more liberal the pay for example would be opposed to same sex marriage is they are extremely conservative on abortion rights and things like this and with regards to Europe although they are BRICs it is. A campaign for breaks it Northern Ireland has an issue of course as a land border with the e.u. And and they get money then they get a lot of money Queens so they're likely to be far more soft bricks it than hard bricks it because what Northern Irish parties don't want to have is a sort of. A rigid land border between the north from the south want them for very obvious reasons so you know moving forward bearing in mind. To raise a maize version of probably quite a hard Bracks it was part parcel of of this election she hasn't done as well as she hoped Plus he may now be propped up by a governor who is a party who are far more soft drinks it's going to be interesting to see how much pull they have because considering they may offer her 10 more seats to get over the 3 to 6 the requirement majority how much of a say will they have because it is such a small. Situation is more it's a little mission I mean there's 2 things which the Conservative Party have to have support on one is the queen speech and the other is budgets. Then but that is one part of government and it's the important bit of government constitutionally the government has to pass but then there's the day to day boring mundane bits of government and the Conservative Party will have to offer them deals in order. To get support more broadly but even then it's still a very small majority so it's going to be very very tricky to do that and let's be brutally honest with you conservatives probably are even if they're not disgruntled with the reason why they're certainly far from being grunts or they will be furious at what's gone on and so they might not be entirely. See fit to vote with a reason why on every issue so they might stop rebelling so you know it's going to be far from simple it's interesting that we haven't really heard from any of the bake his his within her party today that everybody has been very very quiet the noises have been mostly from the labor camp because even though Jeremy coping came 2nd. It's not such a big loss because he won so many seats it's a strange situation if you look at all of the party leaders Jeremy Coleman's probably come out of this best despite the fact that he hasn't worn but he has made significant inroads a much better than an onset some of those internal critics within the Labor Party who felt that he was electoral a suicide you know but actually he's made steady guy sees seems to have energized young voters which is going to be good for democracy whichever party supports So he's come out of this quite well. Virtually all of the leaders of all of the other policies I'm not come out of it well suck Corbin seems to be the party leader who's the most secure coming out of this you're listening to Dr Pete would cut from the University of how to still we're talking about well the last 24 hours basically say what your comments are welcome the seedling over 34531858 when you call me at one triple 3 when you start the message with the word Josie This is Belinda Carlisle. a place on earth only love the messages from you and plenty of things to put in the Judge Susan says been talking in the garden my house plants next summer we are moving to a new bungalow all being well we will be at the seaside almost as if going in the definitely. I've come up with something I was wondering what I could put in the Jo It's all to do with a little bit of well personal kind of what would you call it grooming I suppose I'll fill you in with the details though just wait where you are. Find out what's happening out on the roads I'm still she could even in Cheshire to laze on the Am 6 southbound by 2 lanes remain closed for a match and see the paths between junction 21 the wolves. And junction $25.00 a limit interchange in East Yorkshire at Carnaby. 165 is shot in both directions are to shed load between more lane and can be stakes and also at how did how to be a $61.00 fall that blocked in both directions following a collision nature the. Roundabout to expect delays on the approach there now if you spot any other problems to call him 130-123-0184 the latest I'm out of more. Thanks Adam a bit for the job from Dan and it's what she says Georgie Can you please put in the jar of hearts me in countering my 1st cook of the year I didn't hear its but it flew overhead and I got an excellent view although I haven't cited one for 5 years so I'm happy thanks from Dan. It's going in the jug definitely Thanks for that keep coming I won't trouble 3 star you message with the word Georgie and when you call me and I owe 34530858 over get if you are a member of Cabinet the Georgie cabinet what would you bring. I'm doing chief cook and bottle washer but as that is so what would you be in the cabinet in your house . Now then it's coming up to 20 day here on the b.b.c. You're listening to Georgie's and England and the Channel Islands lots of you are entering the cabinet tonight I love this this is coming from Nathan Georgie I live in South Wales but work in London during the week my boyfriend did asked me to move in with him before I got the job offer I said yes which decor some slight wobbles but 2 years on and we're going strong I think this makes me Foreign Secretary what do you think Mason You certainly can be I've just actually renamed myself nice and minister of rubbish because I am always had to deal with the been I've done it today as well actually and the gays are nice and had the cheek to say to me I'm normally put a rubbish bag in after I've entered it it's like oh a low when do you ever and I mean you know Nathan you are the foreign secretary in George's Cabinet see evening Keep it coming a one trible 3 star you message with the word Georgie and I do hope the moving it goes well. Paul from Chile says in my house I care for my disabled wife and manage my teenage daughter wrangling teenage daughter wrangling they're very much in charge so would be prime minister and deputy prime minister but I would be chancellor as I look after the budget health minister as I look after the health needs food minister as I don't all the cooking is cetera wouldn't have been any other way you are in charge poll I reckon very very busy but here in the cabinet Pauline surely one dribble 3 started his message with the word Georgie now then I know what we're all waiting for yet we want to know what the weekend weather is going to be like and hello Well it says here. Georgie Good evening so would you be minister for the weather do you think Well absolutely I'd have to go this way wouldn't it. I mean it's a different certainty as well deal very well with uncertainty when. The weather is can always be relied upon to do a bit of hand waving in the corner to get us through those difficult moment yeah but it's true I like it I like hand-waving Minister will take that definitely the wise minister for hot water was going to be alongside Mike great couple. You can have that one as well you can be so busy I'm very I'm very busy at all I'm very busy in Cavite Well it's at home. Now for the weekend where we go with this. I'd like to say we're going somewhere tropical but we're not to Fortunately it's not it's felt this week for many of us and more rain to come it's already showing on the radar picture of the west of arms beautiful evening they say for that yeah youthfully going to look at that window Oh it's a little. Bit right Ok so the bad news going rain coming in a finite writes No it's not for old you know they'll be a favored few and it looks as if East Anglia southeast probably Lincolnshire best part of the Midlands will have a decent enough day tomorrow and probably skate mostly right particularly the southeast and sangria where we could have some really quite weather 2425 degree Celsius now as it should be at this time of year however the rain elsewhere and so it will feel quite as pleasant quite as woman to be quite blustery as well with the breeze now the good news is that Peaches out through tomorrow evening and overnight as it moves its way towards the south east of England kind of just what we call it fizzles out in situ that is it doesn't go away but the rain dies out so will probably have quite a lot of cloud around on Sunday morning of course again the Middle East Anglia So the nice impossible. Because the rains Kate away should be a brighter day we just didn't you she was. Yeah I know so it's a tale of 2 hard Stephanie that we can we know that sash down the Sunday but to say looks like it will be some rain. Around for the western parts of England whilst the south an issue all the woman dry will be and then Sunday when we get that weather front in the south east will be much right and it will slowly improve through that I was brought in is coming through and western areas having some good some chance of sunny spells has been good for the out of Wight Festival Well that's good too and toward the. Oh hell and then have you got the plants the weekend you doing still the case oh right of course I know you have a night shift and so yeah I think we just we aren't clomping last weekend didn't have. A fantastic will come we went to a year that one of the wait a year oh really it was the shed for a bathroom in the middle of it though it was actually a flushing toilet in it and I know and I says no he was fabulous Silas to go and up by is that we have to hope because it was 56 families from the girls' school so we have the run of the field there any 5 year so we have the whole field we can let the just run around and do what I call Didn't you know we had a little so it's just that when you are feeling to do it you know it well I know in the Fayette you have the one below. And you don't get to do that nowadays as children do you mean I doubt it will happen you know whistles and then when you take time you just absolutely call do that nowaday know it's very difficult to do that as I say they had a fabulous time I had a fabulous time which is a couple a long bike ride doting on the bait type while you I tell you Will you treat yourself to a nice little sleep Helen will its And if I was swimming tomorrow morning life I am . Right Ok and not just my shit you exactly get to go I go if I had said. Here I. Am I. Have. Carole King and it might as well rain until set. Better not only. Arable this week this is a message from Woody he's entering the Georgia cabinet on the text he says Minister for the environment basically recycling and rubbish that's what I should have said Minister that's me too woody. Many thanks for the text Terry says in my house I'm a normal middle class worker My wife is the treasurer a typical m.p. Really she has her hands deeper inside my pocket than I do. Thank you Terry a word triple 3 started the message with the words Now one of the highest profile casualties last night was former Lib Dems leader and deputy prime minister Nick Clegg he lost his seat at Sheffield Hallam to labor he chatted to Cat Callan earlier you know it's not the way I wanted my parliamentary career to come to an end but you know politics is a volatile business and if you don't roll with the punches you know you shouldn't go into politics so you know these things happen what went wrong for you campaign is interesting actually just looking at the 1st I mean I need to reflect on it more but looking at the the votes the Labor vote went up a little bit actionably much mine went down a little bit not very much so the thing that changed completely from the last election was almost doubling in the number of people who voted Conservative and of course if you vote Conservative in a seat like Sheffield Hallam that as hasn't happened of course that helps the challenge of the Labor Party and I suspect I don't precise you know but certainly from the fowles of doorstep conversations I had quite a lot to do with the fact that quite a lot of surprisingly conservative voters were not very comfortable with my quite staunchly anti views so I suspect if there's any cause that did me in it was probably my my my pro European sort of stance but you know I listen I mean people why precisely people vote as they do is always a complicated thing to try and sort of guess so we're facing this morning a country with a hung parliament how do you feel about that well I'm very worried for the country I really am I just I just I can't think of a time where our country is more adrift. It's really horribly adrift when we desperate desperate need. You know why he's leadership. In Westminster and instead I think you know you've got. You've got you know country facing probably some of the most difficult decisions perhaps in the post-war period we've got a very fragile economy and when I say fragile economy about g.d.p. And to get people's jobs and incomes and prices in the shops life is going to get tougher economically. And we don't have we have got no sort of no consensus all investments about how to move forward and so I think we base it got one of 2 options either the parties reach out to each other and are not to mount coalitions and deal but come to some kind of consensus about what a more moderate approach to Brecht's it might involve or or I consider the alternative we're all going to be asked to go back to the polls maybe once maybe twice or how many times until a party gets a full a full majority but of course by that time our negotiating time with the European Union will run out so I can't really see any way forward that doesn't involve a great deal of turmoil and my concern certainly for a wonderful city like Sheffield is as ever with it's the it's the poorest and the people in the lowest incomes and the most vulnerable jobs that suffer the most and it feels like certainly in recent in recent times the parties have never been so far apart as even when we wanted to plead deeply polarized and divided country we saw that last year in the in the referendum it's only been confirmed by the events of last night you've got this new stark polarization of right versus left between the Conservatives and Labor you've got this terrible sort of division between different parts of the country Northern Line Scotland London all pulling in different directions but the most stark division of all it's a Gulf really now is between the young and the old and you know look Call me old fashioned but I mean. I've had it in the neck from people you know left and right for years for advocating the politics of moderation and compromise by just. I just really firmly believe the divided country is not a it's not a healthy country you can't you can't advance together if everyone is constantly taking pot shots at each other so look it's probably a. Hope made in in in some optimism rather next spectate by really hope this Parliament would be a party where people would actually reach out to each other across party lines the former leader of the Liberal Democrat party and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg lost his seat in Sheffield Hallam talking to Kat Cowan And with me is Dr Pete would call from the University of Huddersfield it's interesting p. He talks about division but isn't that democracy you know we we are able to have a different opinion well yes with the slight Kaviak that there's this argument in America for about the last 2030 years perhaps here that we're moving more towards sort of ideological polarized nation that is there's very few people in the middle who are prepared to discuss make deal. Listen to one another's viewpoint perhaps even dare I say it with the advent of things like Facebook and Twitter we've become a little bit more shrill in talking about what we think and what we feel which one sense you're absolutely right you you know that's democracy we have a right to. Give our opinions but perhaps less so are we prepared to listen to other people and get in the middle so there is you know perhaps there is this claim center of people who are like this who the current political parties don't really appeal to and do you think we're going to see the last of Nick Clegg. I doubt it so in one sense I mean. I don't know for seem much of him in terms of parliamentary politics but our I suspect he will be quite a prominent commentator he's dictates quite a young man isn't he on. Your days there's been this move recently which 1st time I can remember of people relatively early in their careers moving to other jobs take George Osborne for example going to stand his you know Tristen hunts going to the v. And a museum so you know they'll be a future in public life I'm sure for Nick and took him out Lib Dems that bit of a bounce back for and some of them in thinking Vince Cable well they deserve it they think quite well in in some areas where there were. Considering Conservative M.P.'s but quite high remain vote for him would be a knob obvious one barf would be another where there Davey coming back in so they did quite well there there's other areas which they didn't quite do so well let's take the leads Northwest for example where Greg Mulholland was unsafe by the Labor Party with I mean I think the figure I saw bandied around Headingley where students left 80 percent of the suits voted for Corbin in the Labor Party. Sheffield Hallam So it's a patchy evening for the Lib Dems Yes they're up overall but I lost some and they gained sun and there was an overall sort of message to be brought from that and a place for them because there there is a lot of talk about return to Tea Party politics now as well I mean I think if you look at the stats in the I mean remember that the the percentage of the vote that the Conservatives got is their highest for some time and a percentage of vote that the Labor Party got is also their highest for some time the Lib Dems have been squeezed Ukip have been squeezed and we are and yet at the same time we're talking about the day you pay in the role that they're having in sort of. Not come addition politics play in terms of making $9.00 you don't want so on the one hand yes we are but nevertheless the small parties might have a role to play in the weeks and months to come some would say that he put his party ahead of the country when he was in coalition Well this I mean Clegg's argument to that would be there in a particular position you needed a strong stable government so he stepped up and actually put the the the the nation's interest before the party but you know there's there is still I mean it's telling isn't it that you have Jeremy Corbin broadly speaking popular with the young also making the offer about tuition fees and of course what Nick Clegg will be remembered for amongst the student population is the long standing manifesto commitment of the Liberal Democrats to abolish tuition fees and then the reversal of that when in government so so as a consequence there is that slight irony of that policy perhaps be one of the things which has led to Clegg's down from. We would talk some people come from the university how does fill with chatting about the last 24 hours and we're putting ourselves in the cabinet what would you be in your house if you were in Jody's capital this I think I'll be a minister without. It in the sense you know ministers about bullfighting is in government they get involved in lots of things but I'm really sufficiently trusted to do any one phase always stickies knows that. Doesn't have been. In there in the car about it but. We've also had a monk. Sorry a monk. Full freight from the cab cool Derek steady yourselves on logic both going in the excellent good coming from a one trible 3 months into the word Georgie and if you enter the Judy cabinet tonight who would you be I love this this is coming from Rupert in West Nile and he says great show is a very kind thanks to put pieces in our family I think my mom would describe me as the minister without portfolio on the grounds that I meddle and ineffectively and lots of things but don't really pull my weight on the domestic. I think just because. Thinks this is coming from faith in Swindon she says. Get ready. My partner of 10 years has just brought home a Friday evening bunch of flowers which he quite often does she says and which I always appreciate because I do love flowers this is lovely but to not. In capitals says Finn for the 1st time ever in capitals it wasn't just a bunch of petrol station quickies this is my coat runneth over so does the Joel I do this wonderful world on lovely stuff good work good work clearly after something from what can I say already guilty as. I am getting you know that thing you know I think that's wonderful what a lovely way to start the weekend and one should both restart your message with the word Georgie Yes I think this happened to you this week we always do this on a Friday and we put it in the jar of hearts along with the with. With no with of Gherkin about him I'm joined by Does a bit Woodcock you've been here for the last hour pate and that was taking questions as well so if any of you have a question for Pete Woodcock he is an expert in politics at the hundreds field University the University of us. Please get in contact 34531858 know how got one actually Pete from Ray He says Do you think 2 reasons job is safe simply because there's no one who could replace. Well possibly I mean I think that there would be one or 2 candidates who might normally fancy a go I mean let's not rule out Boris Johnson you know I mean I think it's reasonable to say that but Boris Johnson is ambitious I don't I don't I don't think that that something which you know it's too much of an exaggeration Amber Rudd's probably had quite a good election in some ways was a had a bit of a scare last night but is in so I've been robbed might fancy chances David Davies and you know however this is the thing. Suppose to Reason My goal is the next couple months which is it's not beyond the realms of imagination. Would someone want it because they're still in a minority government they still going to have to deal with today you pay they can't push forward on a platform so maybe if someone was younger and relatively ambitious they might want to buy their time for a bit thinking that well how am I supposed to start my author of the on this unless they thoughts come in big popularity snap election again and hope that they improve . Possibly I think is the answer Rice question already well thanks for the question re how that answers it for you keep coming out 34531858 when you do you can also text 81 triple 3 starting a message with the word Judy and if you prefer to e-mail them please do Judy b.b.c. Will come to you k. We've talked about the conservatives we've talked about the Labor Government also the Lib Dems What did you make of Ukip and how they fared in this election pays well they did poorly I think it's fair to say I mean and you know the 1st party leader resignation was to die. Paul Nassau came a very poor 3rd in Boston you know the winner got 27000 votes or so he got through an awful something like that that So what was never really cut that the vote was squeezed suggested that probably most of them went to the Conservative Party so you know. In his resignation speech kind of said well in some ways you keep of become a victim of their own success the Bracks it's on the cards we think. And assume anyway and that having been achieved and Nigel Ferrars stepping aside that really it's not really surprising that they're not doing quite so well but that said. You know that they have been at a main stay of sort of party politics now for the last 5 or 6 years and they will nevertheless be disappointed unless they reinvent themselves. And I wish you would talk about percent conservatives getting 44 percent of the vote Labor getting 41 and I was quite intrigued that you could went into the minus is minus 11 percent of the vote rights of a modest 11 percent of the vote yes certainly they they were highly squeezed from from also I mean. There's been a lot of talk here about whether they were sort of almost like a gateway party for the conservatives that a number of sort of northern voters especially. Who perhaps have always voted Labor have voted Ukip in the past and then as a consequence of that now votes conservative so they moved off that way some have may be going back to the Labor Party you know it's Ed again if the party is survive is to survive. They're going to need to reinvent themselves as being something other than about breaks in the referendums and we have seen you know shots of Nigel for arson them saying you know if you had to make a comeback would you and he said he would well he did I mean quite but again I suppose Niger Ferrars might think does he want to come back in manage the party which has been quite a challenge does he want to come in in a position of of of weakness and try and build the party back up at the moment in some ways nodule Ferrars is a bit of a minister without portfolio to go but you do that he can do he can do some media work he can go over to America he can get involved in all sorts of things is he the kind of person that would want to try and start to come back in and build you can't part from the current position you know he might bite his time but who else does Ukip have that's that's the thing and already I mean this is Paul Marshall the 3rd Ukip leader we've had since for our viewers my mask correct there so it's a fractious party Yeah it's very interesting this this election this time around is extremely interesting isn't it for someone like you who deals in politics at a university I mean you you you will not have there will be always something to talk about the moment it's been a process of well at least the last 2 years but I'm reminded Georgie of a old Chinese curse May you live in interesting times it's down to 10 nerds like me who are like why. With doing all the pumping about politics Yes it's interesting that isn't necessarily a good thing you know markets jobs things. You know so yes it is interesting but you know boredom is sometimes quite good yeah true actually we know boarded tonight are you listening to Georgie tonight on the b.b.c. Across England in the Channel Islands I'm talking to Dr Pete would cut from the University of how this well he's taking your calls got a question about today and where we get from here then that he's happy to give you a little bit of an insight this evening so the numbers 034531858 when you coal and when you text 3 starting your message with the word chill we will talk more with peas after show krona want to do we'll talk about where we go from here you know what happens next. Well you can do marvels with the tambourine we've got the cabinet going here yes it's the Georgie cabinet if you'd like to enter the cabinet what position would you take this is come in on the old text Merv here just a my way down to Covent Garden with a lawyer to purple spotting broccoli Oh how delightful the cabinet member I'd like to be is that of Defra of the Department of Fisheries and as it used to be the reason for that is that farming is all game so be nice to keep in control of some of the red tape and the 2nd reason is I love fishing Oh very good casting you know . Very happy days spent on the parrot Xing I'm looking at sea bass and also ticking for rainbow trout on the new cover that was into the house that is my reason Georgie keep the good music coming I was listening to share with that's great I'm glad I'm keeping you company you in the purple sprouting broccoli Yeah minister something you Defra that's the last. Triple 3 star you message with the word Judy this is Christian Devon I would be minister of education as I homeschool my 8 year old daughter sell Christmas. Funtastic you are definitely Minister of Education Nice work keep them coming Phil in Lingfield says I'm good looking debonair and getting ready to hit the town look out ladies the culture secretary is on is why. I love that thank you so but if you're in the cabinet just go easy this evening please 81 triple 3 Start your message with the word duty yes look after your liver and it'll look after you I'm joined by talk Dr Pete Woodcock per politics expert at University of hundreds field been great to have you actually on the show not a montage we saw a few more minutes to go pee and I've got another question here this is from David he says what does Dr Pete make of the behavior of the British media towards Jeremy Corbin during this election Well it's been especially if let's take printed newspapers it's been vicious I mean if you if you saw the headlines in various papers on polling day it's I've never seen anything like it since 9092 New York a mix had turned into a light pole but you know yeah I mean it's I mean. What I would say is Coburn has played a very clever game with social media. For those who are concerned about the prince of media's influence on British politics it is on the y. And if you look at the way people are using Facebook and Twitter and with relatively little budget Corbin and a mentor movement have done it played a very smart game there it's no mistake is it that you know one thing surely whichever party we support one thing that's good out of this is that young people are getting more involved in politics you know young people that they that they like the Facebook and that's why I say you know actually go there and so you know. Corbin has found a way to try and sort of assuage that and he's done you know they've done a very clever job. We still are waiting for one more declaration from Kensington and they they stopped mid morning because everybody was a bit too tired and then they received around about 6 o'clock tonight we're hoping to get the result of that count but there's a recount going on isn't it quite it's I think the the poor counters there are literally fell asleep on seats but I think this frustrates me about the the u.k. Electoral system you know I can order my groceries from my mobile phone I can do all of these things happen for fan that we vote and so we you know the people of Iran charts of the polling station and then they have to start counting it immediately after that they've done it it's like the British Democracy is like a plaster on a hairy legs we want to tear off in one quick movement and get it done work and then so a day later just carry on as if nothing happened yeah it's it's astonishing that it's a very much oh game I saw discussing how long we stayed up into the night and I'm going to leave got there it could be done in much more civilized manner winners and losers then Pete who do we think well I mean I think the the the the I mean I'm thinking of the next Barry song every where you lose a win I mean in one sense and what best way to describe that that the winner of the night has to be Jeremy Corben bearing in mind the expectations that we had of him. Where he is and he's answered a number of his critics you know he would have thought that he's put in a strong performance over the campaign not so he will probably stay in there he didn't win the election because he's gained so many seats this time around I think that's right you know I mean. He's probably the most secure party later there's a there's a tie I think for loser of the of the night. I mean in one sense it's a reason why use decision to call this election when she didn't have to when she had a workable if not astonishing majority. And lead into a position. You know a catastrophic. Mistake in judgment so there's that the other of course would be you can't who has been in entirely squeezed and lost its party leader so you know in one sense you know the Conservative Party let us not forget that the reason why is the prime minister there's a conservative administration they got more votes than anyone else a high percentage Yeah obviously be dissatisfied with the last 24 hours and the campaign as a job of work so I think a joint laser in that respect and of course we could very well be doing this in the autumn again maybe a yahoo that maybe even the summer maybe in a fortnight. Never dull moment page but I mean. If we had another election in the also would we necessarily get any different results. Yeah trade Well it's been lovely having you thank you so much as it can be a lot of pleasure you can go to bed now or. You can even eat up I think all. Of the movement by the time you do it through and I love it. Thanks so much Dr Pete woodcuts been joining me this evening and taking your questions as well it's the b.b.c. Good work goes well with a family like Judy that's good news I like to take one people 3. The. Right. Time to come. Along the message is. Dave innocent and oh no I've already done that I'm sorry I'm repeating myself I'm having one of those moments again. B.b.c. Full of a pace. To give me. Russell says he'd like to be minister of music because if he was in Parliament he could have class to the left of him and to the right hey you kidding. Me Russell you're in the cabinet. This is as a loon fan this is muffin hands lead but he says I would like to be Minister for Defense on the grounds we ain't got a goalkeeper so a strong defense is. But harsh laugh. They do say the truth always hurts. Thank you even says my ministerial post would be minister of baked beans I'm not even a pussy that I'm saying nothing thank you so much Keep your messages coming the cabinet is well and truly open it's Judy's cabinet so what would you be in your house what would you be the minister of let me know tonight a one trible 3 star you message with my name is Judy says George with a y on the new message and bash after a one triple 3 You can also e-mail me Georgie at b.b.c. Don't code the u.k. I was talking earlier to Dr Pete Woodcock He's an expert in politics at the University of hers for We've just been taking a look back at what's been happening in the last 24 hours and some highs and some lows for quite a few people today people who've returned the likes of Vince Cable Zac Goldsmith of course. And a rod hung on after $33.00 recounts Hastings constituency Nick Clegg gone from Hallam Sheffield pool not all gone from Ukip So in terms of you know winners and several losers who will not be taking a place in the next Parliament we'll sort of see who won't be one person who's been on both sides of that is Ian Causley Now Ian was m.p. For bring in goal in East Yorkshire northern region for 13 years from 1997 I'm very pleased to say he's on the line even so talk us through the elation of winning take us back to 997 yeah I think when you win for the 1st time it is very very special not being a member of Parliament before. It was special for several reasons we won't just only get into Parliament it was also the fact it was part of. The way I was a labor of the Labor Party going back into government after a very long time in opposition so that So 2 bodies. Simonton and there were a couple of nice things well I had a. Baby daughter lit it being born just before she was at the counter my mom was closing down and I was elected on May the 5th but it was actually declared in the early hours of May the 2nd is my mom's face as a phone to the face another says and then he was happy to say. Now that was type. So it was great yeah I really did Mrs Ferris just very very excited because you know all people who stand for Parliament of all political Calista been there were very hard to get themselves into a position to be a candidate in this place and then they were very hard to get elected to join the campaign and so sublease to boxing things are you one of them can win and if it's you it's great. When you come back for reelection I was reelected twice it's not quite the same because there's more relief I think because the law is state because the position for the 1st time you actually get over the live is much believe and it sounds like it was any yesterday close to the way talking about it definitely So then in 2010 how did that fail and what's it well I mean we know we're in a difficult election and. It was always going to be tough to for Labor to get back in power we start off with a degree of optimism talk about the start of the campaign now I mean you know Reagan galit existed for 3 general elections that I'd stood up went to every time so there was no logical reason to say so can't win it this time but you just know the trend is against you and so you spend most of that campaign I think just hoping something will happen nationally that will look at the trends for your party so that you might get back into the race but that didn't happen and so I feel very much by the time the election day was drawing to a close and then of course I had to go to the count. I think I already knew at that point and I was saying to myself. Is inevitable if. You can but I'm going to count I thought I was going to lose and then I think I just have to be quite professional about it I think straight away my mindset completely switched to watch what I say because that would mean obviously the victor gets to go 1st and be in a when pain is under Paris in my case and he would get to say and he would if I was his 1st election so I understood the elation that he would fail but there was a very good friend of mine being an m.p. Several years before I was he once said the 2 most important speeches you ever make in politics of the one you make when you get elected and the one you make if you lose and got to hit the town. Completely correctly because you can't be too. Always got to bear in mind when you win for the 1st time you still got people on stage you have a more so you can't be too self congratulation to diminution of the fact of what they've done and then when you go you can't look like you're leaving with disrespect for the person is beating you other people for not choosing it very carefully about what I was going to what did you make of Nick Clegg. The you know to punch a speech falling on the. Proposition on the stump that you know I mean I think you know with 2 jobs in life always the axe is almost inevitable in a football manager and eventually the measure of time. And I'm not sure I'm very good friends with with Greg Knight his the m.p. For East Yorkshire and he had a journey where he originally represented Darby which was a very marginal seat from a conservative point of view and then he lost it and then he got restricted now represents which is a very safe conservative. And I remember Greg same to me as we were counting down towards 2010 he was saying you know you've just really got to get your head around this and that is that if you represent a marginal seat eventually you lose because just if you did. Governments would never change absolutely to make any difference and so you can't go around beating yourself up about that you have to work hard and do your best book but if it happens to you you have to accept that that's part of the democratic process and you know we're here let's be honest nobody made you do it you've got to be resilient even you mentioned Greg knight that he's actually gone viral this week with this election video. I know I mean I've heard the song before. If you didn't write it did you would. You have offered so many people. Do I said I just think you're on it and then you think the simple truth is that Greg who got a fantastic musical background himself a great drummer. Before you a member of parliament he was very big on the scene in the middle and from the Leicester area where he used to work then. I would use of the recording studio so he don't do these kind of things I mean I think. That the something else you and I when you listen back to us song I think it's fairly obvious that it was recorded. On a bold thing and here. You are part of well is it the only parliamentary band u m p 3 when you say that because there were only 3 of yeah that's right so we started off and we all began back in 2001 when Pete Wishart got elected to Parliament so he's a Scottish National Party m.p. He got elected to. And he's a very serious rock'n'roll musician he's been in big country. You know I thought I recognized his name not just in the. Solomon tree stuff Exactly and so there's a man is literally sell millions of albums so when he came into Parliament he was very keen with the idea of getting some music going amongst parliamentarians and he he literally looked around for people who maybe not not to the degree he had but had a musical background and I'd been a professional musician before I went into parliament so he approached me me had a chat one night and I said to him as a coincidence happen next is unbelievable we were just chatting in the lobby and he plays keyboards and I play bass and I said well we're a long way short of about but we will get a guitarist because as always anybody will say oh I can play a bit of. The drama will be the problem and just as we said Greg and I was walking behind the light it was even newish and oh did it have a militia sounding he said did you just say you were looking for a drummer or said yesterday so I'm a trooper is ridiculous. Form the band and m p 3 seemed like he also shows how long it was now because I have an m p m p 3 formats going now I think about it at the time m p 3 is what everybody was starting to download so we thought it was a very funny evident Kevin Brennan came along the m.p. For Cardiff West and he's of begged banks to join the budget in the end we just couldn't bear to hear him cry so. We have to mess it is the IP 3 because even before. The house band on the spot with full down on Days line we're through with 3 series about is tremendous for them out for such a talented and funny comedian and impressionist. And so every week we've just finished because the other 3 couldn't do it Gregg and Kevin people have parliamentary elections and this was a twice a week show to cover the Germans It's like the South Dakota. Music. Because we can and then before him to we start asking get something we are coming to achieve on this where you have you know yes I've come if he's in the band oh oh wow I mean this is this is a great life after policy. Well I think I didn't have a half of the Kaiser Chiefs playing bass and drums me on guitar and chucking clock off or who were not so well known by fantastical to come in by playing the keyboard and pick play in the. Car pay you money for that kind of songs I think my father was not talking about music now because you'll hear for a reason I have this cause. Yes even going to share his 1st his last everything she's with this nice June you have a pull in what was this with and it will probably go all the action Oh and what was it about for you that they were the 1st band I really really felt was I've got 2 sisters and my older sister the big bowl and hunted so I'm very much came to listen to or maybe she played but I just loved I mean a part of I thought my poem was a great from mine and wrote great she sing along pop songs and just the whole image your whole thing about glamming up and looking different from the time it was to move on from what we have in the sixty's I suppose and it came before New Wave and punk and all of our and it was just a great for me I mean music's always about your own life experiences so maybe that was the 1st time that music really meant something. And the reason it was distinctly fun my sister always bought the t. Rex single pushed in them any money that weeks when it came out she said I think you should go and buy the record I really and I mean oh really well I'll give you a little blast doing it so we go easy. Yes. Yes only the 4th part yes. But you can get. Pretty Now the last 2 needle What was that he was hit by a truck and on no one else. And 'd I mean this is just the beauty of having a growing family of your own around you and I've got children and grandchildren and you know you listen to the things that occur and it's so easy they didn't it was either download still streaming just to listen to what's going on I can't believe you're a grandparent shocks me and how well I've. Grown from arrived only last week was she oh lovely I'll show you what Charlotte to the year old. Another great generation coming up you know who time and I mean just listening to rag and bone man I thought I think he I mean relatively not that nearly getting quite so often in show business will be overnight success so I sleeping with can so far for the last. Book put it just strikes me as somebody who is a very talented songwriter and I know he writes in a team but he's very talented songwriter and a very good performer and you know Britain is blessed with this thing I do a lot of music stuff in Parliament for a fairly obvious reason but it's very serious side to it you know it's a very important there are only 3 countries in the world who export more music than it bought in I want to be off in America. But on the u.k. And I doubt if you want we need to know both Sweden is almost entirely from 2 other . That's possible in Britain we've got the front stick a ray of talent and you know we really didn't punch above the way I'm like you know generation move on I mean you know in Iraq and Bowman is in that new generation right we'll give him going to give you some skin now. And he will go. To. Lovely and stand. With. Us. You know artists. We've been sure. It is a very very good rag and bone man of the scheme did you download it by any chance I did yes yes I'll do you and p. 3 Yeah. And the weather forecast rain will move in from the southwest joining the nice tomorrow they'll be heavy stormy downpours across northern England and Wales further south tomorrow it will remain dry. B.b.c. News and weather with the time at 4 minutes past 9. Rounds when you can see. The. Evening old hot new Kensington That was the last seat to be. Not denounced announced sorry it was the last seat in this general election to actually be put up it's going to labor Yes it's a to fully a Tory stronghold but labor on now in control of Kensington in west London by 20 T.-Bone it's very thin margin that but nonetheless it's a win now then let me see on the show How do you feel actually what happens to the old leaflets feel Party candidates. I think you are actually recycling Welcome back before you ditch the paperwork you might like to hand them over to the special collections archivist at the University of Bristol yeah yeah in fact we'll get back to Woody Woody tonight on the tax he's the. Minister of the environment basically recycling and rubbish. So you know it's about that also we get another chance to hear from my b.b.c. Introducing artists of the week Gerry Williams from Paul Smurf and a jar of hearts is well and truly open anything that you can see that's really nice this we want to put in my little jog I'm the cabinet Yes Who would you be in the cabinet Georgie's cabinet tonight this is Sarah in Stroud could be minister of green spaces and on my last moment Oh of course you can dig deep and Georgie I'm making Christmas cards maybe minister the arts and. When it sorry was snow. You said Good work. Christmas time it's Come back in the stay it's coming to temp last night here on the b.b.c. Listening to Georgie tonight across England in the Channel Islands I'm going to be talking to the former Conservative special advisor before half 9 to David Cameron this is Ramsey Jones c b as we're going to talk some more politics also going to find out what happens to the leaflets the you know the candidate leaflets that the Flyers that they you know they pamphlet us with they leaflet us we'll find out what happens to those and more of your messages yes if you'd like to enter the Giorgi cabinet saving Yes please tell me what you would be in your house this is from Jean jeans as we're on now so I am too excited Jane we're on our narrowboat or north you Oxford canal we live in Dorset we're loving the show especially your love oh gee thank you for the text tonight and thank you for your kind words that's really lovely of you one triple 3 star the message for the word Ga you could be ministers for transport couldn't you it's a slow one on the canal but nonetheless a journey and this is remote Phil from chip in and he says he went out to vote on his horse Frankie last night oh lovely So Phil says he should be minister for horses Frankie has been down to the polling station for 10 years of elections the women on the desk there said she asked for that station in particular so that she could see Frankie a 00 and the Lib Dems candidates held onto him while you went to vote Phil but you didn't have the heart to tell him that he hadn't voted. Not so Ari it matters doesn't you're all right many thanks for the call over 34531858 tell me and Devon on the phone says he'd be Minister for Communications because he keeps the Internet going in his house oh yeah it's. Well duh it's a vital Tony and j.b. On the text says great track from the former m.p. Yes I know in cause they way it was Luca and Suzanne Vega before that rag and bone man and skin in the 1st one I ever bought was t. Rex which is just brilliant and I love the fact that his sister was the major t. Rex fan but she got the money one week so she said You better go and get this track so when I got solid gold easy action from the rest but yes agreed totally agree but j.b. Says I'd like to be the minister for Peter Pan's for the his who never grow old and you can be she says the minister of a laughter and fun yes the Minister for just jokes like it j.b. Thank you for the next one triple 3 starting a message with the word Georgie You can also e-mail me Georgie at b.b.c. Kodo u.k. This is take that and patience. Take that and patience I have just had the brainwave of what happened this week it's been such a busy wait I couldn't think of what to put the John Hart Graham on putting Graham in the jar of hearts he's a plasterer he turned up he quoted for the job and he's coming back next Saturday policy not some money off what can I say that's gone in the journal I'm just going to. Go home the way of the only reason I do this you know coming from that smell keep your jar arts coming what would you put in the jar it can be a big thing that's happened to you this week or it can be a little thing it's just something nice that made you smile and made you know cheered your week along one triple 3 Start your message with the word Georgie and when you text a bunch of bull 3 star you message Julie when you call oath 34531858 now then the election is over the final seat it's been counted and recounted and Labor have taken Kensington by just 20 votes so it's done it's dusted but. You might think about throwing those election leaflets that have been arriving through the door in last week's away rules stink again the University of Bristol special collections wants them and Hannah Lowry is here to explain why evening Hannah hello george so how many leaflets have you got so far are well in our collections we've got about 30000 the piles for this. 30000 yes dating back to the 89 to 0 Wow And this year you're going to say before I rudely interrupted Soarin no problem this year the party is growing as we speak and we probably into the hundreds Wow And how do you get people to send them to you or is it because you and and your colleagues are collecting them no I know there's not enough of us to do that we have been trying to approach all the candidates or in all the constituencies asking them to send them we've also be talking to networks of people we know and saying could they collect so we've been approaching the university staff students colleagues that sort of thing and there are other collections in the country doing it and we'll sort of swap spares and always will call this is a bit. Program yet so drug so with social media I mean it's so large he said you think the leaflets are going to lose their importance. That's a really interesting question because lots of people talking about tweeting or messages on Facebook that sort of thing but I think people forget that some people are very sort of i.t. Savvy and some people still like that thing that countries adore lands on the doormat and that gives you an idea of what's going on. Well I suppose things have changed quite considerably I mean can you take me back to the 89 what were they like does the leaflets then for the the parliamentary candidate they were quite plain they were actually only accounts of speeches given that meetings so say a big box is a press cuttings and then you begin to get more satirical things you get cartoons of people being rude about their cars that their opponent and you then start getting this all sort of biographies from candidates saying I'm the candidate for this party sometimes you begin to get things like a photograph. You get some of their policies you begin in when women begin to be able to vote in 1989 you begin to get little notes saying . These policies that would be good for women who arrive and they're ready diverse and they get more splendid as the years go by will have you only stand out ones from the collection Well there's lots of splendid ones and ones some of the ones I really enjoy the 1918 general election where you get the 1st women candidates and we've also got some slow and good ones from Bristol in this 1960 s. Showing gents sitting at telephones waiting for the call saying some really fun cartoon Yeah I mean how can we get involved and help with the collection and get rid of our election leaflets Well the best thing you can do it's pop them in an envelope and send them to us at the University of Bristol special collections we'll pop them all in the envelopes play Top Trumps see what ones we already have duplicates of and then send them on to other people that need them toes that's fantastic Oh my word and it's a labor of love for you to do this. It's quite fun. We obviously we did it recently and 25th day we weren't expecting to be doing it now but we've all embraced it and go in the flow and well I've been working with a collection for about 20 years now so I've done several Yes You know what you're doing yes some really. Lovely stuff and I unlike you say you didn't you'd be doing this so soon and you know what you might well be doing in the autumn as well. You know that the trail is even more reason why we get the men because then we'll get really good idea of what people were talking about well how do we put a little link on our Facebook page and Twitter for people to be able to send their leaflets to you so it doesn't have that said thank you so much for coming on the show really and thank you good to talk to you thanks how Larry from the University of Bristol special collection she wants you leaflets everybody baby. See New Castle radio for the no seats. Please have. A boutique. Hot Spot. Put him in. Charge of people for a dollar in that easy to. Get peeved. With. Any thoughts on a 30 minute. Round . Repeat. That the. The. Gentleman and Big Yellow Taxi it's coming to 25 past 9 here on the b.b.c. You're listening to Georgie tonight across England in the Channel Islands and if you could be the fly on the wall of any office today I'm guessing the conservatives would be quite high on your list wouldn't it of course is impossible to know what's going on behind closed doors but actually someone who might know better than ass is Ramsey Gen c b a former conserved especially adviser to David Cameron Good evening Ramsay evening to you I know yes tell you a few stories while I'm having you then George I'm hoping they're well how are you I'm very well thank you did you advise David Cameron to quit after break sets 4 and a half years I was there and that was 100 percent his own decision but there was never really I don't like that any question at all because 2 things about David perhaps people you don't understand one he would grasp with a soul it was an issue that he thought needed to be dealt with but then he was in an incredibly still is an incredibly or noble man and would stand by the consequences of any decision he took Still I don't think he thought for a 2nd about what was the right thing to do he knew he had to to go up point and what do you think he went down better than Theresa May with Aces Ramsey. Answered on a postcard please ring some people connect in different ways don't they different times different circumstances different personalities and it's a funny world George isn't it where we know you seem to always need to judge our leaders on how much we like them more how well they connect but remember people used to say they didn't light during the carbon and then they suddenly changed or a lot of people change their attitude or the last 4 or 5 weeks saw you know people can actually learn to. Like politicians for different reasons and it's not some Always they don't always want the big smiling teeth of a Tony Blair and the times they want more serious people he said the people not liking Jeremy called half is can his cabinet tonight you mean well they do know they're all carbonates now I think. And now it was a very good night wasn't it for the conservative party in Scotland it was yeah I mean Ruth Davidson I mean I I would imagine everyone if your listeners know Stevenson as we would have been aware of it before from appearances on you know Question Time and Have I Got News For You But Ruth is just a remarkable leader of the party up here but it was Georgia a very different election in Scotland it was all about really independence and a 2nd independence referendum and the Scotland if you like split or still the old nationalistic or anti independence planes as opposed to a sort of more fundamental conservative labor as was the rest of the u.k. Very different but he kept them brilliantly well as an advisor to someone in such a high profile job you want to have all 247 because I read your article in the papers every Sunday about the women who were advising our M.P.'s and prime ministers and and it sounds like you never ever get your own life around see what was it like. Back in July when David stepped in to really keep an eye hummed and hawed about what to do I would I was lucky George I was offered the chance to state but I knew I'd meet the right decision when I suddenly realized 2 things if he weeks later one when the news story broke I suddenly realized oh that's not my problem or I don't know what I don't know if you think you're all don't have to worry what the light is and I did not have blinking red Blackberry constantly 20 for their release. From that was magnificent really I could not choose what I do like speaking to you yet without that stretch because he wouldn't let you talk to me after. Stopping. Was your phone ever ever turned off in the time that you spent as his advisor on a brewing question. I think I think. I think occasionally I might have lost signal somewhere Oh really how convenient you know that well maybe the government as well. But I mean that was part of the Gobi that actually was one of the few things that David ever asked of his people he said I always need to be to get old if you but actually 10 Downing Street has an amazing switchboard unit binder full of men and women in there and their ability to track people just brilliant give a name they've probably got your number Giorgio really. I think she featured in The Daily Mail once for claiming to have tied David Cameron to the desk in my C.D.'s leaving Yeah well yeah. I did yeah it was breakfast time I just want. One next to the 2 worries that now that they've won but barely and they're forming this government Yeah d. I mean how much success you know it was funny isn't it because you know when I was a loser depending on the expectations I mean if somebody had just walked in from another planet and looked at the results at all the conservatives that was a good when if the but when you measure against expectation people and I think they lost them somehow Corp n one is a strange world but the fact is they are the biggest party they have got the board seats they can with some kind of understanding and I'm not sure go much beyond that . They can. Form the government the way that's going to happen I think if it wasn't for the you see of Breck's it I think things might be different Georgie I think different choices might be me. But I think given the fact the stock have to stop for a week Monday. I think this is the best course but and here's the big but it only works mainly if. Those are right and the prime minister who is on the conservative bench he's the senior people in the party want to continue to make it a success and other words for 10 years is good as long as she's got that support through the parliamentary party that is a question I don't know the answer to yet. What it's good to talk to Ramsey as you and I actually one last quick one what was what was David Cameron humming when he returned to the deal with the from until. There was a. No I you know I'll listen I'll try and remember the place you did well. Just humming a little ditty to myself you know why he was doing it for some obscure reason he just wasn't sure the door we're going to open as it does for you. And. Me Walt that was the reason he was able. To run you have been very delightful say thanks so much for coming on here and when will the next time we be having dinner with Dave to see him socially now we've you know . Good to see Ramsey. Conservative special advisor to David Cameron the kings and sunny afternoon that's the one you're listening to Judy tonight on the b.b.c. . Is with. Us. Day. You. As you. You. And Chrissy high not Shelly 52 thank you but I'm sorry I couldn't resist the I'm a creature of habit as you know. Now that. Last night I got to chat to my b.b.c. Introducing artist of the week Sherri Williams from Portsmouth She's 21 years old and you know she was actually playing a gig in Manchester as we speak so I caught up with her little earlier on in the day do you find it weird when you play like that to think it's been an eye for the country like it's just the best feeling you know you work so hard right now songs and producing them and. You know for it to have a chance to get some airplay is just lovely it's kind of hard to expat off especially people enjoy them as well is it's really lovely feeling good stuff and how did you get into the music when you musical as a child Yeah I mean I've always grown up with music around me me not like my parents I play music or anything but I just music lovers and I started playing classical guitar around the age of 12 I did that for years like doing competitions and grades and things like that but my passion the whole time was songwriting so that definitely helped me but you know I was going to say that when you've got the foundation then it makes it a lot easier does an hour I reckon when you get the basics exactly like I kind of went in to guitar lessons just have no lessons and I was like whoa I teach class cause we're a joint to do that and learn the hard way 1st and sort of thing so I really did learn to just fall into it accidentally and all of a sudden I'm on stage reading sheet music playing like some like classical pieces Yeah but you know when you say you were around music at home your parents not musical What sort of music were they playing. Artist like Coldplay I've had my life David Gray My dad was into Maybe when I was little. Granddad was like Johnny Cash and people are that say Yeah and you got a bit of a thing for Chris Martin haven't you hear like Coldplay that would be the. Driver of Am collaboration I bet you are pig sick with I Ariana Grande I got to. Tell You That was amazing was just saying no I just think it's so brilliant so I don't know it just gives me chills every time I hear them. And I was I think he's a really nice guy I'm I've got it completely wrong I don't know him but he just appears to be a really good bloke they just seem pretty normal Yeah I mean like I'd love to I'm going to keep those vibes out one day I have. To listen when he does let me know oh Ok now Portsmouth What's it like being by the sea having been brought up there. I love it I mean I just to be. In mind one day one day now than it has been a very very interesting 24 hours isn't it David Dimbleby has been the face of the B.B.C.'s election t.v. Coverage for worst 40 years and last night was his 10th general election results programme and as usual the veteran broadcaster was in fine form keeping viewers entertained as he tried to talk to guests on dodgy lines try to hear results being announced on faulty sound systems batting flies off he even he even managed to do that landed on his back he said for a bit of light relief let's enjoy some classic Dimbleby shall we from his 9 hour yes count them 9 hour broadcasting marathon. But once again the sound quality is abysmal for us both. Pretty 171917 there's a fly in the studio to me we've been trying to get rid of it for the last 3 days from Iraq you know I'm just so not complacent. About It doesn't get you very far no no our whole program life of this is something. Good that I want to see if we can recover from what's that leader laid out said.
