You cannot possibly compression in a 30minute show and we have two wonderful activists berry and clooey on the program and rick fighting for what he believes in terms of the safety of dolphins, the slaughter of which is supposed to start again in a couple of weeks. Oil and want tear and a hunter and dolphin activists. Similar threads. What is similar is both individuals want justice and both for equality and fairness and this conversation airs that out and i learned a lot about dolphins and i knew nothing and it was fascinating. We have a never before seen interview with rick oberry and check it out. He has dedicated his life to protecting doll finls and ending captivity and stopping slaughter of them in japan and most of the world knows you for your focus on dolphins, one of the other things you look at is the Overall Health of our ocean and the ocean environments. What role do dolphins play in the scenario . There is no point in saving dolphins without saving their habitat is what its all about. They are a very important part of the echo system and we have been puting them in captivity under the guise of education and if it was educational and an educational experience maybe the disarray. Year . Well, we dont know. There is a lot of places that i have been to, rescuing dolphins from the mountains of guatemala and columbia, brazil, haiti and its not on the radar and we dont know, we know in japan they were killing or capturing, well, i have to break those numbers up but a lot. And the Solomon Islands is another place capturing and killing them. Shipping them to dolphin parks world. Dolphin parks and you mentioned education and there is criticism of seaworld and other marine parks in terms of black fish, is there an argument to be made there is a degree of education going on, the public is exposed to the beauty and complexity of the creatures in such an intimate way it has to help broader their view and creatures . It sounds logical and a lot of people believe that but it isnt true. True . Well, they will tell you we have to display dolphins so that we can educate the public. You only protect what you love in those kind of sound bites. My nineyearold daughter, malee, loves dinosaurs and knows all about dinosaurs, she has never seen a dinosaur in captivity. So you dont have to have a dolphin in captivity to educate the public about dolphins. And we have failed miserably to educate the public, that is why the oceans are such a mess. The bottom line is this is casual amusement and i think seaworld is called seaworld amusement amusement because its an Amusement Park really. What are we really teaching children when they see a dolphin show . Do they really get an education and a respect for nature . I think not. Anybody who has seen a dolphin show at seaworld or marine land or the tigee whale museum, if they are honest with themselves they would have to admit what they witnessed was a spectacle of dominance and that is not educational. It teaches us that dominance is good, dominance is right. Dominance works. We have this u till utilatarian form of nature and lying to us since 1938 and the cove and black fish exposed all of that. Rick, Community Members has a question for you what is your best projection how much longer the nightmare of captive and dolphin slaughter will go on . What is a timeline for what she says is our goal . There is no timeline. Well, its forever. We will fight this battle forever. The show will go on. Dolphins will be dying to amuse you as long as you are buying a ticket for it. Its based on supply and demand like any other products, cocacola and anything else, as long as we continue to buy tickets for dolphin shows the show will go on. So there is a huge power in corporate interesting and i was reading the other day pixar has a sequel to finding nemo and they changed the ending of the new script that would end in a Marine Mammal park and that is not the case any more and talking about kids and influence, if pixar changes the end to the up coming movie and it implies marine parks are not good places for these creatures, kids are going to naturally have a resistance to them. You made my day. I have not heard that one. That is really good. I can tell you something you dont know because that is difficult to do generally. I will promote the movie and we have millions, a coalition of people in groups and there is millions of us out there, i will make sure they see the movie. If you lose the kids and they do this and that is the implication at the end of the movie and you lose the kids interest in marine parks do they fail or are they too big to fail . Fail. Dwha see . We are not revolutionary and are not anarcists, i would like to see them revolutionized. The end goal is really to stop all capture, this is the solution stop capture of dolphin and other wales for casual amusement and those that are in captive and can be rehabilitated and released should be. Those that cannot need to go to a natural sea pen where they can experience the natural rhythms of the sea and the tides and the currents and the sunshine and live out their life with some quality and dignity and birth control. There is no reason for a dolphin to be born in captivity. So i would like to see seaworld and these corporations follow that model creating a sanctuary and they will go and Seattle Washington to see lolita as a sub standard tank in miami. They will follow her and they will go there and they will buy tickets and there is nothing wrong with that as long as you tell people what she is doing there. What is her story . Where did she come from . How long is she going to be here . And simply telling the public the truth. The truth will set them free. We made a mistake. We captured her. That was a mistake. We cant set her free. But we can improve the quality of her life and look towards setting her free. Her mother is still swimming off shore somewhere and that is what the show should be and rescuing other Marine Mammals, these places could be doing that. So its about revolutionize these places. Not down. We have 30 seconds left and, rick, talking to the average american right now, there are so many problems and say we have to save bees and horses and garn gorillas and why should we be invested in saving doll fin dolphins. Flipper created this multibillion dollar industry. I tell people find out what it is youre passionate about and learn everything you can about that. It could be womens rights and toxic waste or place nick the ocean, it could be whatever, find out whatever you can about that subject and that will give you power. You will know, you will be just like zach, you will know exactly what to do. Perfect, rick oberry thank you for joining us, a real pleasure to have you on the show. Stay with us because up next, we hear from former Minnesota Vikings player chris clooey whether he thinks the ncaa has a duty to pay its players. Welcome back, former Minnesota Vikings player and activist chris cooley stopped by the stream and had a lot to say about the pay for play debate to the redskins controversy and joined by america director of sports and listen to the never aired before interview. Chris, ncaa voted to allow 65 teams from powerful conferences to make their own rules and can do more with full ride scholarships and food and clothe and entertainment, there are people who believe some schools will make it easier for athletes to have relationships with agents. What is your reaction to the ncaas decision . Well i think the ncaa is something that is long past over due and dissolved because right now the actual reality of College Football is that its a Minor League System for the nfl where the players are not allowed to be paid anything. They cant profit off their own appearance and cannot profit off of what they do. 9095 of them will not go on to play in the nfl. And they are making millions upon hundreds of millions of dollars for their schools and in return all they are getting is the ability to stay at the school, they are getting funneled into classes that are designed to be passed, not designed to teach them and once they are done then really they dont have a great future ahead of them in terms of being able to actually succeed at a worthwhile occupation. Neil, chris mentioned this is basically turned into a Minor League System, the priority is on athletics and not academics, is this idea of a student athlete kind of gone and its just an athlete that happens to be at a college . To chris point ncaa struggled to keep the balance of students and athletes being the same and doesnt work that way and no control over the boost historically and now this rich get richer proposition is maybe getting i wont say people are going to cheat but it gives and mitigates the cheaters and gives the schools the exact opportunity to pay more to come to my school, get a better benefit package and to chris point let them make their money on their own image and do their thing and they go from slavery to share cropping where there is a little more coming to the players but they still want control and its a company town any more and a company team. You have the university of pittsburgh or whatever and your jersey but it might as well be google or might as well be the local company town or team or company in your town because these guys are getting compensated and now they are about to get really compensated. This is a slippery slope they entered into. Should student athletes be paid and he says, no, ncaa path leets should not be paid and receiving tuition which is willed in most cases 100,000 value, however, i do believe high tuition should be off set by the Athletic Department revenue, where does the money go . Kris suppose they dont get paid they make money off of the games and likeness and jerseys and how should the money be used to help the students . It would be nice if tuition went down across the board for all schools. I think forprofit schools are a huge problem cropping up in this country and to address the point to that she made with you know athletes get paid with their tuition, well, as an athlete and this is from firsthand experience for myself, as an athlete you are pushed into classes that you are expected to pass. You are not pushed into classes that are going to help you succeed. Because to the school the value you provide is being out on the football field and drawing in fans. Its not whatever your academic pursuits are. They are only worried you stay eligible and not worried what your major is and they will tell you these are the easy classes to take to stay eligible and it may not be something you need later in life, how many lawn Golf Course Management people are there, how many positions are there for people who have that degree . The idea that tuition is you getting paid is really just disingenuous because if i went up to my coach and said i cannot make practice today because i have to study for a test, its hard and the coach will say, well, we are probably taking your scholarship away because you are not focusing on football. That is not a scholar athlete, that is an athlete who also occasionally. So, chris, they are not getting much of an education to speak of, there is a lack of financial literacy, what happens to an athlete when their body wears out . You said 95 of these kids dont make it to the pros, for those that do and injure out early or get dropped from the league early, is there a common theme that you see among them . Yeah, i think espn or outside the lines did 30 for 30 broke documentary. Talking to guys who went broke after playing. And i think the status like anywheherefrom 6570 of player will be broke within five years of leaving the game because they dont have not had Money Management classes in college which is something that not just athletes should have but everyone should have and they get used to this lifestyle of their entire life they have been told you are the best, we will take care of things for you, dont worry about anything except going out on the field. Once they are away from that bubble they have never really grown up and never had to operate in the real world and they dont know how. Lets talk about money, everyone loves to talk about money and he says no no more would do more harm than good, money would have a corruptive influence on amateur sports and lets talk about corruption, ncaa ruling basically they gave the big five conferences more autonomy and by giving the wealthy ones the autonomy are you stacking the deck on wealthy conferences bases the others in the college race . There will be more money available for 65 schools and its a have and have knots. The reason they have a distinction are some schools are playing a different game than other schools, to chris point some are nfl prep and others are athletes and the other 95 is taking advantage of classes and not preparing for nfl but they boxed themselves in a corner because its more than a scholarship going to school and rules saying you cant pay for a kid to go to and from the home and certain limit on tickets and cannot get a job, all the limits that they have has forced ncaa to have a blind enforcement. So i think with this ruling they are going okay we will have to let a little bit more happening but we will not deal with it but let the schools deal with it. Stick around to hear the rest of this interview, next. Welcome back, we continue our interview with former Minnesota Vikings player Chris Clooney and scarborough. You said it mirrored a Minor League System and is this realistic to think the nba and nfl would create farm teams outside of the College System and at some point this could be removed from the University System altogether or at least be removed from it in such a semi professional way . I think that if enough people raise their voices and demand the separation of athletes and students then that can happen. But as it is right now it is way too profitable for the nfl to have College Football as its farm system because nfl doesnt have to pay a dime for that. They have essentially what is 128 Division One Teams competing to get their best athletes who will play in the nfl and doesnt cost the nfl a penny. Nba i dont know if they would do Something Like that because players can come straight out of high school for nba so there is not a huge need for that. But for the nfl i think that they are very vested in keeping College Football the way it is now and that they will only create a Minor League System if they are absolutely forced to. Nba started down this league a little bit with the d league and created the d league because not every kid is College Material and had this league you can kind of grow on but the league played games with that also wellability saying you have to be out of high school a year to get drafted and talked about two years and some people believe this is for the benefit of the developmental league, lets make sure we get players in there a couple years to create another product going back to money etc. Ra and its on the backs of kids who are not College Material but come play with us and we will pay you nothing and make money at the d level so they have gone down that road slightly but college is the platform where you all audition for the leaves. Chris is an activist and says ask account the racism in sports. Chris, we were talking about all the controversial topics here and why not, Washington Redskins what is your take on what uses native american images and what is your take on this . I think its offensive and i think it needs to be changed and i this i more and more people are starting to realize it needs to be change and Dan Schneider is fighting a losing battle he is never going to win because the fact is there are multiple members of the native American Community who find the name offensive and have said so loudly and to ignore that is to essentially say that you are okay with racism because it makes you a lot of money. And i dont think that that is something a Healthy Society should endorse. What do you do with all the high schools though then . There is hundreds if not more than a thousand that have mascots that are native american related or otherwise, how do you know . There is a big vement to change the names and we did a story at al jazeera with some high school names, there is a teamn california called the arabs and a team in texas called the Cotton Pickers which offends one race more than another but i think there is a ground swelling communities about do we need to change this sometimes they dt do it for financial reasons, its going to cost more to paint the floor differently. But political correctnesis actually getting in the mascot game a little bit. And if you look at people like Daniel Schneider we have little high schools who are willing to take on the expense of changing their image and then we have Daniel Schneider who every time he opens his mouth to defend the use of his name he puts his foot in and this week iteming us what red skin means, pardon the expression i dont need a rich middleaged white guy to tell me what it means and if its offensive its offensive and when they talk in circles they are avoiding the issues and lets get a Team Everybody can rally behind, the washington warrior, will be just as love. They talked about not using the redskins in reporting, where do you think that will go . Nobody do not notice it and caught up on the scores and what is going on in the field, if you can enforce that with people you are changing words and copy or on air but nobody is paying attention to say we refuse to say that name then you are playing it yourself. Its really a hard movement to kind of really penetrate the daily lives in media. Sorry, if i can interject, there actually is a push now in minnesota actually with since the vikings are playing at the bank stadium for two years and one of the native tribes in minnesota donated i think almost 10 million for the construction of the stadium, when washington plays at minnesota the tribe has requested their name not be used at all. Not on the score board, not in the broadcast, not in the program guides, they want washington to wear their throw back jerseys so the name is not on there. I think that is a very valid way to get the point across that, look, its offensive. You cant do it. And there is another controversy the Baltimore Ravens of abuse against his wife and need topic of violence against women by nfl players and sarah asked what can be done about violence against women, how can the nfl culture change it, chris, question for you . Well, what you can do is stop purchasing the nfls product. If you are upset with the fact that ray rice only got two games for punching his fiancee in an elevator which was well documented and everybody should be upset about because its heinous dont purchase nfl product and do not buy in Breast Cancer Awareness Month where 8 we raise goes to actual Breast Cancer work. That is solely a marketing tactic by the nfl of something they have not appealed to. This is something that the nfl really does need to address because they are in the problem of violence against women. When you tell people that punching a woman is only worth a twogame suspension and that you are then going to suspend some other guy an entire season for smoking weed, well, that sends a really bad message to a lot of kids and oh, sure, we can go hit women, that is fine, the nfl doesnt care. Chris, do you want to get back in the nfl . I think i can still play. Im keeping myself in shape. I can go out and punt the ball 45 yards outside the numbers and i dont think anyone is going to call because as a punter you are replacement and as a punter who speaks his mind you are very much viewed as replacement which i think is unfortunate because in the United States athletics has a very rich history of athletes standing up and taking a stand on things that matter. Mohamed ali is a good example of that and to lose that would be to lose something from our sports culture that we can use. Because we are role models if you like it or not and should be good role models. Thanks for our guests rick oberry and cooley and until next time we will see you online. Audiences are intelligent and they know that their needs are not being met by american tv news today. Entire media culture is driven by something thats very very fast. There has been a lack of fact based, in depth, serious journalism, and we fill that void. There is a huge opportunity for Al Jazeera America to change the way people look at news. We just dont parachute in on a story. Quickly talk to a couple of experts and leave. One producer may spend 3 or 4 months, digging into a single story. At al jazeera, there are resources to alow us as journalists to go in depth and produce the kind of films. The people that you dont see anywhere else on television. We intend to reach out to the people who arent being heard. We wanna see the people who are actually effected by the news of the day. Its Digging Deeper its asking that second, that third question, finding that person no one spoken to yet. You cant tell the stories of the people if you dont get their voices out there, and Al Jazeera America is doing just that. Welcome to Al Jazeera America, these are the stories we are following u. N. Peace keepers being held as prisoners. Meanwhile, march these soldiers to the death, and the white house now weighs its options and ukraine says it is being invaded with Russian Forces fighting side by side with the rebels in eastern ukraine
