Is. They have to be careful about going too far, but this is a significant attack in the capital. It has not happened recently and they are going to have to take measures. Theres going ton to be a crackdown. This is still speculation, and i apologize for this. These two gunmen who have now been killed according to the interior ministry might they have been linked to groups from outside tunisia, or were they perhaps acting on their own . Are these lone wolves . Is this a lone wolf attack . Does it look that way for you . Much too early to tell until they identify them and what associates they were. It will come out. It could be a matter of hours, a day, a few days. Certainly not much more than that. Is this strictly a domestic attack, or was there a foreign influence from any number of terror organizations. The situation in libya, i want to come back to that. Libya, of course in chaos right now with one governments. How has that affected neighboring countries like tunisia . Tunisia has played a very neutral role in whats happening in libya. It is seen by many as the switzerland of the region. It has maintained good relations with the tabruk government recognized by the u. N. And the tripoli courtappointed government. Its also tried to maintain relations with the former general hafta, who is now the military commander of the tubuk side of libya. It has been affected and closed its air space to western libya. It has accepted libyan refugees. There were 3 million libyans living in tunisia at the moment. It has found a lot of weaponry on the border between tunisia and libya. Its tried to maintain this distance and not get too involved in the operations going on in libya. But there is one connection which im sure we can maybe explore. On saturday a man wanted in an as sass nation he was killed on saturday in libya. We dont know if theres a connection between his death and what weve seen her today in tunis today. I think a lot of people will ask whether there is a connection. He was a commander for isilaffiliated group, so he was very high up in the isil affiliated group he was fighting for in libya at the time of his death. Martin, your thoughts. Is there a connection between what we see at the museum in tunis and death of ruisi in libya . Too early to tell. I think once they identify the shooters and what their association is it will more shed light on the connection, more light on his death and what connection there might be. If you look at isil you know initially in iraq and syria and they start as different terrorist organizations in north afterrica africa and asia swore allegiance to them and they would expand the calafit, and theres in egypt, tunisia is the next country over. This could be a logical expansion. They believe there is a Training Camp for isil around 40 to auto kilometers away from the boarder with tunisia, so thats very close proximity to that border region and these developments in libya have been extremely worrying to the tunisian authorities. Again, they tried to play the middle ground and a fair game having contact with both sides and also trying to deal with the problem that they have of tunisian isillinked fighters returning to tunisia and trying to work out what to do with them. Interesting indeed. Obviously a lot of questions in the next few days and hopefully well have a bit more answers in clarity as to who these two gunmen were. At 1436 gmt now, 3 36 p. M. In tunis, it appears that the hostage situation at the museum in tunis is now over according to the interior ministry of tunisia. That is the building you can see on the red rof there. It used to be a palace and its one of the most famous tourist spots. Events changed very quickly in the last two and a half hours or so. Lets bring you up to date with the latest developments. As we said the gunmen attacked the museum in tunis. Eight people were killed seven are tourists. More hostages were held inside of course, the building but now the interior Ministry Says theyve been freed and the situation is under control. According to state television in tunisia, ten of the injured tourists are being treated in the hospital in tunis and some are european and asian nationals. Nine of the ten injured are said to be in stable condition. Among the eight killed was also one tunisian female employee of the museum and also one security personnel was killed during the operation to apprehend the two suspects. Again, the latest information we have is that the situation in tunis is now under control. Well, of course bring you more on it as we have new information. In the meantime, lets move to to other world news name on al jazeera. In israel it looks like Benjamin Netanyahu will remain Prime Minister. The Opposition Leader has called netanyahu to congratulate him on his election win. The next step will be for the president of israel to invite netanyahu to form a coalition. Reporter for Opposition Leader isaac hertzog, the general election wasnt supposed to end this way. Translator a few minutes ago i spoke with Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu and congrat congratulated him on his achievement and wished him luck. Reporter early results on Election Night put them in a dead heat with Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu likud party. They won 30 seats in parliament 12 more than than the election. Im happy the people of israel decided right, and i hope it will now create a Good Government and well be able to continue what they did in the past years. Reporter not everyone is happy the Prime Minister looked poised to form a new government. Translator im disappointed with the election results. I was hoping that it would be different, and at the moment it looks like were going to continue with years with more racism with a wider gap between the rich and poor. Reporter netanyahus dramatic victory after a late surge in support doesnt mean the road ahead will be easy for him. He led an increasingly Bitter Campaign in which he rejected outright a palestinian state and made a lastditch attempt to rally supporters with whats described as a racist warning about a high turnout of Israeli Palestinian voters. Netanyahu has to find a way to heal israels tensions with its closest allies including the united states. Although Prime Ministers Netanyahu Likud won the most seats, its up to the president to decide which leader will form a coalition government. He said he will work toward the building of a unit gi kwovt between likud and the zionist government. Its difficult to see how netanyahu will find my Common Ground with any faction that doesnt belong to the far right. Now lets join our reporter in jerusalem. We saw the Prime Minister speaking a short while ago at thing wailing wall there. What did he have to say, and how long will it take to form this National Government of coalition . Reporter thats right. Prime minister netanyahu went to the western wall known as the holiest site in judaism. There he offered prayers and addressed supporters thanking them for voting for him and promising them that not only will he ensure their security but also their welfare, which is, of course, a nod to one of the key issues in this Election Campaign which was the economy, the high cost of living here in israel. When we consider the shear number of seats that went to mr. Netanyahu and indeed the far right in this country, it would appear his message of security is the one that truly resonated with voters. To answer your question about just how easy it will be or difficult it may be for him to build the coalition, as we heard in my report he does need to be invited by the president to do that. If he is he will need to rely on one man whos been dubbed the kingmaker here in israel. He is a man who used to belong to mr. Netanyahus likud party. He parted with them in the last election. Hes managed to secure ten seats of his own. Its unclear as to whether he will join with mr. Netanyahu in his coalition government. So a little bit of horse trading needs to be done before Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu is formally made Prime Minister yet again. Yeah. It may be some time before we know what this new Israeli Government looks like. I want to know about the palestinians. How are they reacting on the other side to the this result and netanyahu probably being in power for another four years . Its been quite interesting. We, of course, have heard from very senior members of the palestinian leadership, but we heard from the palestinian street, if you will. Theyve been telling us that in some ways theyre element happy that mr. Netanyahu has been elected as Prime Minister of israel or very likely will be named the Prime Minister again. That simply is because during this Election Campaign and indeed in the last few days mr. Netanyahu made his position on the palestinian issue very clear. That he didnt believe that there would be any palestinian state, and that he would continue to build settlements in the occupied west bank and that the settlements that have been constructed are designed, in his words, to prevent jerusalem or any part of jerusalem from ever being part of a palestinian state. So the palestinians tell us that at least that has been made very clear to the world, that with mr. Netanyahu as leader of israel in their view theres no hope for any future settlement. Okay. Thank you very much for that insight. Live for us in jerusalem. To iraq where Government Forces volunteer fighters and militias are accused of serious abuses during their battle again the Islamic State of iraq and levant. Human rights watch said they deliberately destroyed homes and properties in towns and villages last september. They have Video Evidence of iraqi forces looting the property of sunni civilians that fled from the fighting. Human rights watch said 11 men were taken by iraqi forces in september and october. The Human Rights Watch report also includes satellite images it says demonstrate the destruction of towns. This image shows it before iraqi forces took control. Lets look at the images from afterwards. Human rights watch says the red and yellow spots somehow where arson attacks took place and buildings demolished. Early my college spoke with a Senior Researcher with Human Rights Watch, and she plained how certain villages were targeted. The militias went out and campaigned to clear the area of isis, but what that has morphed into is a campaign of revenge attacks where they target sunni villages in the area and they have you know gone through each of these villages and looted them burned them. Theres been purposeful arson and weve seen purposeful demolition. These are militias who are essentially working in conjunction with Government Security forces but are operating like marading gangs. Theyre using the cover of fighting isil to go after i guess attack people for their own purposes or beliefs . Absolutely. What weve documented is what something that appears to be a weird collective punishment whereby the militias have found these villages where isis had used some of them as a base to lay siege on the town of amorle. But the citizens and civilians living in the villages have you been caught between the horrors of isis and the brutalities of the militias and have been driven out of their homes in the thousands. What we documented is that 30 out of 35 villages have been destroyed. One in particular, the village of habash our satellite imagery showed that 75 of the village has been destroyed through arson and purposeful demolition. That includes us being able to see heavy earthmoving equipment used to destroy houses. What does the iraqi army say about this . Do they just blame isil . We have written to the iraqi authorities, and they say that they carried out the investigation and the destruction we documented was carried out by isil. We know that during the time that we documented these abuses those villages that have been destroyed were very much under the sole control or majority control of the progovernment shia militias, and it was them it was the militias responsible for the damage. Iraqs ministry of defense released a statement denying the contents of the report. It says no Human Rights Violations or property damages have been committed across the nearby or adjacent villages by either the ministry of defense troops before the liberation of amale or after. The movement called on thousands of people to descend on europes Financial Capital aiming to make their point about what they say as the negative impact of austerity policies. Translator above all, i think the ecb is a big symbol for Monetary Policy and capitalism here. Its very important that lots of people from lots of Different Countries come together and fight against the politics. Reporter in some areas of frankfurt, clearly that fight had taken on a physical form. Police held hundreds of people in different parts of the city to prevent them committing criming. Its what protesters feel against the authorities and role of the European Central bank. That brought me to the streets of frankfurt to prevent the inauguration of the europe Central Banks new billion dollar building. Inside the building the president of the ecb did acknowledge the protesters point of view but said policy was not the cause of individual countries problems. Its understood that countries have to be able to stand on their own two feet. That each is responsible for its own policies. The fact that some had to go through a difficult period of adjustment was first and foremost a consequence of their past decisions. Reporter but that sentiment does nothing to calm these protesters in their slogans and chants they say eu austerity is killing jobs and destroying peoples livelihoods. Samson jules, who was one of the first boys to learn to surf here, tells us the project has the potential to change the lives of his entire community. The passion from these young haitians is unmistakable and its the chance to be part of the lives of people like samson that organizers hope will draw surfers to these waves and ultimately help tourism grow.
